As most fans remember, on October 3, 2004, the pilot episode of a series that entered the hall of fame aired. Today, we celebrate its 20th anniversary. Wow!
The first time I saw the image of Bree, Lynette, Susan, and Gabrielle was in a TV series magazine showcasing "what would soon arrive in Italy." I was 15 years old, in the midst of adolescence, but there was something in that image—the colours and faces—that made me think, "This looks interesting." I have to be honest; the pilot aired on free TV in Italy on November 14, 2005, so I was late to the party, but let's overlook that.
A year passed, and as a 16-year-old, I could finally watch the first episode. To say it was love at first sight might be an understatement. Lynette threatening her kids by claiming she has Santa Claus's number, Susan's mac and cheese mishap, Gabrielle mowing the lawn in high heels, and Bree's legendary muffins—which I learned to make.
I was in my third year of high school, and while my classmates watched more teen-oriented series like The O.C., I was eager to find out how the mystery of Mary Alice's suicide would unfold. Those weren't good years for me for various reasons, including psychological bullying, but every week, there was an hour of comfort in my life thanks to Desperate Housewives.
These characters, as unique as they were desperate, accompanied me all the way to my high school graduation exams; in their company, I defended my bachelor's thesis. I still remember watching episode 100 during a break between classes: I was in the study hall, and it might have been the first time I cried over a TV show episode. A classmate saw me sobbing and worriedly asked what was wrong; explaining that I was crying over an episode was quite something.
Desperate Housewives accompanied me well beyond the series finale on May 13, 2012; that year, I was finishing my first year of my master's degree. It was the first series I started watching in English; in Italy, they were delaying the dubbing a lot, and I had to make do with watching it online with subtitles. So yes, the adventures on Wisteria Lane are the primary reason I now speak better English.
Desperate Housewives means the world to me; I literally grew up with it. Each character has taught me something—including Edie!—especially the importance of friendship (and talking to your friends—secrets are a big problem!), embracing change and evolution, and understanding how some changes are for the better. To seize opportunities even if they scare us: "We all have moments of desperation, but if we can face them head-on, that's when we find out how strong we really are."
According to the internet, Susan was 35 years old in the pilot. It's funny that I am that exact age as we celebrate the 20th anniversary.
Time flies.
Twenty years later, we still use Desperate Housewives memes to express our thoughts. I still believe that Katherine's declaration to Robin is one of the most beautiful on TV, but I might be biased. I haven't yet gotten over the fact that the girls didn't get to play poker together again, but as Mary Alice said, "It was not meant to be." In my mind, they still talk to each other on the phone, through messages, and via video calls.
A heartfelt thank you to the amazing cast and crew for bringing these characters to life and creating a timeless masterpiece that continues to touch lives even after two decades. To the community of fans who, like me, have been shaped by this show, here's to the memories made and the lessons learned.
The women of Wisteria Lane will forever hold a special place in my heart.
Happy 20th anniversary, Desperate Housewives!
And remember, "Even the most desperate life is, oh, so wonderful."

I’m watching desperate housewives and I will never forgive them for the way they treated Katherine, and all the hate her character got after the whole Mike fiasco. I mean don’t get me wrong it was fucked up but she was clearly mentally unstable and they pushed her further into mania; also the bi erasure still hunts me

These are some of my favourites
(Some have romance but as a side plot)
Akarnae by Lynette Noni
The bear and the nightingale by Katherine Arden
Vespertine by Margaret Rogerson
Forest of souls by Lori M. Lee
Midnight Girls by Alicia Jasinska (can’t remember how much romance, but does have lesbians from memory)
Does anyone know of any fantasy books (YA or above please) that aren't an excuse for someone to write a romance novel that just HAPPENS to have a fantasy setting? I liked The Hunger Games and The Uglies because they have a well fleshed out universe AND drama, and romance was literally a sideplot/something that meshed. It didn't take away from the important beats of the drama and wasn't the absolute center of plot.
I mean,,,, if it's high fantasy with lesbians I will not complain. But I picked up like three different popular YA series and the main poin in the summary was a romance. New girl, scary/cool guy who she can tame wooaaaww

Further, in bringing to life the father/daughter relationship hinted at in Hill House, Jackson demonstrates that Blackwood’s treatment of Merricat uses food and formal dining to symbolically and almost literally starve her out of existence. As Lynette Carpenter notes, Merricat is pointless to the patriarchal order: ‘The Blackwood family exploited its women if they were docile and dismissed them if they were not. Mary Katherine, the middle child who was neither a useful daughter nor a male heir, had no appropriate function in the family and was frequently dismissed from its presence for her rebellion against its laws.’ This dismissal more specifically takes place at dinner. Uncle Julian remembers that on the night the Blackwoods were poisoned, Merricat had not been present: ‘A great child of twelve, sent to bed without her supper.’ His phrasing suggests both that she was too old for such a punishment – a ‘great child of twelve’ should know better than to behave badly – but conversely, that such a punishment is too infantile for a child of twelve, denying her not only a place at the table, but her position as a young woman at the threshold of puberty and adulthood.
Jen Cadwallader, excerpt from “Picnicking at Hill House: Shirley Jackson’s Gothic Vision of Heaven”

Oh god the next episode of Desperate Housewives introduces a gay couple. I'm not ready for 2007 white suburbia writing dealing with queers. Predictions:
Lynette is gonna be too sick to meet them, so she's going to send Tom over, who will offer them a coupon for their restaurant and not pick up on the gay vibes right away
Once Susan realizes that they're gay (which might take a fucking minute) she's gonna put her foot in her mouth fifty times
Bree is going to go "oh my son Andrew is gay, perhaps you'd like him!"
Edie is going to say it's a waste that men moved in if they can't find her hot
Gaby is going to bond with them over hot dudes
Katherine is just going to be happy that the focus is off her
Or they'll just be written like "I may not know my flowers but I know a BITCH when I see one!"

Desperate Housewives
I think one of the sweetest things in the whole series is Edie helping Lynette reacting to cancer
The other is Katherine helping Bree with her alcoholism

7, 14 and 19 for end of year asks!!
hi aster! thank you for the ask!! <3
7 - Favourite actor of the year?
This is a fun question! I'd have to say Tom Hiddleston, which was a more recent decision for me. Even though season 2 of Loki wasn't my favourite overall, he did SUCH a good job with the character. His talent is just unbelievable.
Also, Ryan Gosling as Ken. 10/10
14 - Favourite book you read this year?
This is like asking me to pick between my children and that is cruel. I'm going to name a couple: Assistant to the Villain by Hannah Nicole Maehrer, The Bodyguard by Katherine Center, The Prison Healer trilogy by Lynette Noni, The Brothers Hawthorne by Jennifer Lynn Barnes, and Vow of Thieves by Mary E. Pearson. I'm sorry, I can't just pick one!
19 - What are you excited about for next year?
I am seeing Eva Noblezada in concert in February, Ramin Karimloo in concert in June, and Les Miserables twice in the spring, so all of that for sure! I also look forward to the new books coming out and all the times that I'll get to see my bestie @brendadaaedestler 🥰
thank you for the ask!! here is the link to the ask game for anyone who wants to play or submit their own ask!
