It's Amy Winehouse, but with female rage. About Back to Black (dir. Sam Taylor-Johnson) 2024

Recently, a film telling the life story of the British singer Amy Winehouse was released. I came here to talk a little about the aesthetics of this film, which, by the way, cannot be accused of poor music (Marisa Abela sings Amy's songs in her own voice and she does it brilliantly!) or ugly shots.

In the film we see the transformation from a rebellious teenager with a guitar into an emotionally and behaviorally unstable woman (without a guitar). Of course, this turn of events could have been reflected in Amy's real life, but one gets the impression that the film is set in a different time. It feels like the 2000s have been filtered, sugar-coated, and embedded somewhere in the 2024 aesthetic of angry girlbloggers on Tumblr.

Romanticizing drinking alcohol and mental instability

You probably know the tendencies related to #just girly things and the explanation of all depressive states and tantrums by just being a girl. It is a kind of expression of the life and consciousness of today's young girls living in the rather unoptimistic times of social media and consumerism. But is this aesthetic good for Amy's story? It seems to me that romanticizing alcohol, drugs and blind love leading to complete self-loss and ultimately death is a poor approach.

And while watching the film you definitely feel that something is wrong, but at the same time you fall into this beautified world. Amy's life was darker and more brutal, and her problems were not only limited to matters of the heart, glass and flashbulbs of cameras. Unfortunately, living with addictions is dirty and disgusting. And you can't put a bow on it. But it seems to be a sign of our times.

Adding the ending to this song title: but I'm not going to rehab. And here we should ask the question about the level of public awareness in 2008 (the year when Amy received five Grammy Awards) and today. In 2024, acceptance and knowledge about all behavioral therapies, addiction treatment and toxic relationships is much greater. And Back to Black, under the guise of nice outfits, make-up and a few minor falls, gives the impression of being up-to-date.

Will someone watch this movie and say they want to live like Amy (just like it was with Coppola's Priscilla)? This is quite possible, because in the end we get the image of a slightly rebellious femme fatale and a slightly weak girl who is harmed by others. And many of us would fit this description.

Finally, I have to quote Lana del Rey, because today's girl blogging draws from her in handfuls. Is joining the 27 Club really that romantic? The departure of such young people from the world is primarily a tragedy, which later becomes a beautiful myth. That's why it's worth mentioning Lana's example here. She uses aesthetics very well and, above all, separates moving around motifs and drawing visual inspiration from them from real life.

To sum up, movie Back to Black is really worth seeing. However, it is also worth being aware that this is a colorful fiction for 2024 built around the true story of Amy Winehouse.

Edit 24/04/24: I have to mention the update here. I just came across an article from British Vogue that confirms my thesis about drawing inspiration from image of Amy (also Kate Moss, so heroin chic is back in fashion?) Quoting a fragment of the article:

The legacy of Winehouse also lives on in Back to Black, due for release on 12 April. (...) While we’re in no way condoning or glorifying the hobbies of Winehouse and her erstwhile friend Doherty, there was a scene during that time and a smudgy, smeary aesthetic that somehow worked.

12/12/2017: Harry and his friends kill 15 boars during German hunting trip (Meghan's not happy). Harry and Meghan take credit for William and Kate showing a little PDA on an engagement, while Meghan merches her parka. Later, William and Harry attend the Star Wars premiere.

12/13/2017: Kensingon Palace officially confirms Meghan is spending Christmas with the royals. Meghan is revealed as Google's most-searched celebrity of 2017. Meghan merches her handbags, especially Strathberry's, and modernizes the monarchy.

A UK survey finds that a majority of their respondents are unhappy with Harry's engagement:

67% of women surveyed are devastated by the engagement announcement.

20% of overall respondents prefer Harry to be single.

57% of respondents are against Harry marrying Meghan.

And Meghan leaks that Kate has taken her under her wing to protect her from negative parts of royal life. She tells The Express that "Harry is like a brother to Kate and she has never seen him so happy."

12/14/2017: Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury, announces that he expects to preside over the royal wedding. In the morning, the royals attend a service for Grenfell Tower at St. Paul's Cathedral (Meghan isn't allowed) and they gather again in the afternoon for The Queen's annual Windsor Christmas luncheon at Buckingham Palace (Meghan is invited). In the evening, the Kensington Palace Christmas party is held at a nearby restaurant that Harry and Meghan may or may not have attended (it's claimed they left early) while William and Kate are papped leaving.

Meghan merches Strathberry again and she is named the #4 Fashion Influencer of the Year, besting Kate who comes in at #5. (I really doubt Kate cares about this.)

12/15/2017: Kensington Palace announces the wedding date. Palace gift shops begin selling engagement memorabilia. Harry visits Sandhurst Academy and awards Cadet of the Year. Idris Elba shows support for Meghan while Meghan merches tea tree oil.

12/16/2017: Meghan teases a Canada tour post-wedding again.

12/17/2017:

The Daily Mail reminds us that Meghan is attending royal Christmas.

Harry announces that he has interviewed Barack Obama for BBC Radio 4 Today, but the interview won't air until the end of the month.

Meghan used to work at a yogurt store in LA as a teenager and everyone just loved her.

William's diary clash: Harry scheduled his wedding on the same day as the FA Cup Final, which William usually attends.

To prep The Queen and Prince Philip for spending Christmas with Meghan, Harry says he has shown them clips of Meghan in Suits.

Windsor hotels begin to profit off the wedding by marketing Meghan and Harry.

12/18/2017: The Cambridges release their Christmas card photo and Kensington Palace announces that Charlotte will begin nursery school in the new year. 12. Any books that disappointed you?

In particular, I was very disappointed by Ana Maria and the Fox by Liana De la Rosa. I might have been less disappointed if I hadn't waited for months to get it off of my library holds list, or if some romance authors I follow hadn't hyped it up.

While I did appreciate the look into an aspect of history that I wasn't familiar with (the French occupation of Mexico), I found the lead female character very tiresome.

15. Did you read any books that were nominated for or won awards this year (Booker, Women’s Prize, National Book Award, Pulitzer, Hugo, etc.)? What did you think of them?

Not really! I tend to read a lot of thrillers and historical romance. I think Babel by R.F. Kuang won a Nebula last year, and The Maid has won a bunch of smaller awards. I also read The Hate U Give this year, even though it's definitely not a new book.

I absolutely loved Babel (like, I couldn't stop thinking about it when I finished it and even wrote a Tumblr post about it). I also loved The Hate U Give, although it was not an easy read. The Maid was a little disappointing--I liked it on first read but the more I thought about it, the less I liked it. But I think I was in the minority there, since it's very popular.

20. What was your most anticipated release? Did it meet your expectations?

Oh man, it was Georgie, All Along by Kate Clayborn. And yes, it absolutely met my expectations. Exceeded them, honestly. The whole summary smacked of adorkable manic pixie dream girl energy, but I trust Kate Clayborn as a writer, and she delivered a really wonderful romantic novel. Highly recommend!

I too find it weird that the same people talking about Johanne used to describe MK, Rikke, and Fanny the same exact way. Down to the same wording. Except they used to go after MK'S tattoos like they're a bad thing. People were awful about her, and the rest. Now Johanne and his family and friends are getting it too.

Now they act like a friendship, spanning 7 years, is something "more"  bc he likes her posts. Lol I bet he likes a lot of people's/friends posts, guys and girls. Probably a lot of private accounts too bc a lot of his friends went private bc people kept posting his friends' videos and pics. I don't understand why he can't like any of the accounts he follows without it causing a stir. Lol liking a post isn't a big deal lol. People can be friends, it's not like he doesn't have TON of female friends lol. I doubt he's still pining for her, and probably hasn't for a long long time.

It's not like he hasn't dated since or before (Olivia who rejected him supposedly 2017).

And he's older now and probably has sown his wild oats and wants to settle down with the woman he loves (Johanne). And I think, personal opinion, that now he has someone who matches him, loves him as he is, and let's him be just who he is. All goofy funny husky puppy energy Alex. That's great imo.

I used to be able to read like crazy growing up (for example, I think I read the entire HP series in a week to catch up with my friends who'd already read it, and I was once given the joke-award of 'Most Likely To Read a Book While The Boat Sinks' by a teacher), but once I hit about my second or third year of college, I got to the point where my ADHD really outweighed my ability to read consistently and I fell out of it. I still loved books, but would maybe get through one or two a year, and most of my reading became online--fanfic and original fic on AO3 and here on tumblr mostly. Not that that doesn't count as real reading, it does, and I'm talking 100,000s of words consumed, but it doesn't feel the same as holding the physical book in my hands.

But I really want to get back into it, so I've been working on different strategies and finding new ways to help me read. Not pressuring myself to read a lot at one time has been good, I'm trying to measure my progress in chapters versus pages. Timers and background music don't work, but what I've found does work is using 2 bookmarks--one at the start of the chapter and to mark my place, and a second one at the end of the chapter, so I can physically see the pages left. It's like a countdown, that second bookmark is my goal. And then usually, when I reach it, I find that I'm not ready to finish yet and I move it to the end of the next chapter.

Also varying what I'm reading!

I read almost exclusively sci-fi and fantasy growing up, which I love but it really burnt me out on it and I find that I struggle to read them now, especially high fantasy and hard sci-fi; I have a metric shit-ton of SFF published in the last few years I desperately want to read but can't get into.

So I'm exploring different genres--my first read of the year was The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones, which is supernatural/slasher horror, and the second was Archivist Wasp by Nicole Kornher-Stace, a YA post-apocalyptic SFF I've had for years. Last year, I found that I can really blow through romance and romcoms I enjoy (like Katee Roberts' Dark Olympus series and Chef's Kiss by TJ Alexander respectively, DO NOT mistake the Dark Olympus books for romcoms lmao), and I got through several holiday-themed romcoms near the end of the year. And I read a lot of poetry and non-fiction (mostly as research for ADHD Witch WIP, but it counts!) through my local library.

I'm still not consuming books at the lightning speed I did growing up, but I'm reading more than I have in a long time, and that's progress! I'm really proud of myself!

I want to get through some of the books I own but never read, so I think next up will be The Annual Migration of Clouds (following up post-apocalyptic sci-fi with more post-apocalyptic sci-fi lol) and then after that, I'm not sure yet. The important part is: No pressure!

Kate wears new clothes a lot. Kinda funny considering her husband doing the whole "environmental" thing. But I don't see that as a bad thing. A lot of her clothes are British brands so I'm fine with it. I just don't like that tumblr (and twitter?) fans call her recycle queen just because she rewore a few items at earthshot events.

As an ambassador of British fashion, I think it's fine. Diana was an ambassador for British fashion when she was Princess of Wales.

However, on the Boston mini-tour for Earthshot, I think everything was new, except for the lime green rental for the awards show. I don't recall any clothing repeats or recycles happening then.

With film festivals in full swing again and Eddie Redmayne in an awards-buzzy film, these are glorious days for his fans. Starting with the world premiere of The Good Nurse last month at the Toronto International Film Festival, there have been opportunities to see him up-close-and-personal on red carpets at seven film festivals in Europe and North America, with hundreds successfully cozying up for a selfie or an autograph. He’s high-profile on talk shows and in magazine and newspaper spreads, and making appearances (sometimes displaying adorably palpable chemistry with co-star Jessica Chastain) at special industry events and entertainment organization screenings that help court awards voters. 

For a decade now, Eddie has quietly done something unique, though, with each of his film releases. Through his NY PR team, he has connected with fans for an interview. The first was done in 2012 by the creator of the definitive fan blog at the time, iloveeddieredmayne on Tumblr, run by American Kate Burton. She did a second interview, but by the time he was an Oscar winner promoting The Danish Girl, the interview became a group effort to broaden the geographical reach and reflect his fandom. 

On the eve of the release of our latest fan interview, here’s a collection of the earlier efforts, in reverse order. As fans, the interviewers show a depth of knowledge of his career that Eddie responds to with thoughtfulness and appreciation. He’s known as one of the nicest celebrities in the entertainment world, and this is additional evidence that he’s earned that reputation.

was listening to the absolutely brilliant Betwix the Sheets podcast (full disclosure: i have a crush on kate lister)--Lady Chatterley's Lover edition, interview with biographer Frances Wilson about Lawrence etc. Too lazy to go back and get actual citation, and couldn't find a transcript but anyway, of course, they discussed how utter ridiculous the sex bits of Lady Chatterley's Lover sound now, so comical and hilarious, could easily win that Bad Sex Writing Award, maybe even a special citation for Worst Sex Writing EVER--Dr Wilson was so sweet about Lawrence and his Porn With Plot trials, pointing out that (I paraphrase here) that he was really just trying to write about something we don't really have the right words for--

And my first thought, of course, was: get thee to some fanfic, my friend...

By far the best writing I've ever read about sex, lust, longing, attraction, emotion, desire, fear, power and Porn With/Without Plot has been in fanfic. Is there Chatterley Level Awful smut in fanfic, oh yea. But there's also truly amazing insightful incredible writing about sex, too.

i have a full Manifesto on Fanfic that i've been boring friends with for months, I was gonna unload it here tonight, but i can't be arsed, so anyway, if you don't wanna read some explicit fiction, go listen to Betwixt the Sheets, it's an awesome podcast, and did I mention I have a crush on Kate Lister? She should do an episode about fanfic! That's a great idea. Someone should suggest it to her...not me, I'm too shy.

I'm not sure what you call shaming but saying you don't understand the hype surrounding certain people because they're not your cup of tea sounds a lot like shaming, at worst. At best, it sounds like you're questioning their likes and dislikes. Also, hardly anyone comes to Tumblr to focus on work. Tumblr is escapism for many of us so don't be shocked if people's around focusing on your work-based side blogs and posts. Also, I'm pretty sure William and Kate have spent almost a decade being labelled as boring so it's interesting that you think people love them because they're fun and not based on their work. Most of the content I see of them is when they're working. They're not particularly stumbling out of clubs or doing stereotypically "fun" stuff. They just happen to be good at making their jobs seem fun. If you question the influence of Catherine's work, do research on the impact of her involvement with mental health and early childhood and look at what the professionals have to say because they have very different opinions of your "two privileged people who don't want to work" narrative. I also am not sure how Earthshot would be able to do what it's able to do with a lazy man at the helm of it. Or any of the strides William has contributed to making with regard to homelessness, mental health, wildlife crime (not even taking into account his traditional royal duties). It just goes to show that engagement numbers don't equate to impact. I agree that there are areas that need improvement but to label them as lazy or as two privileged people who don't want to work is just unfair.

I just said “it’s a bit of laziness to me” because it is. Me saying I don’t understand the hype around someone is shaming? Me saying I don’t understand the hype is because I don’t get all hyped up when we see them so you’re shaming me for not favoriting them. I love how you’re not bringing up this is her most expensive year despite how low the numbers are and especially with this year being the 2nd year of the annual earthshot awards. Plenty of people enjoy their work which is fine! Enjoy it and appreciate how far it has gone and what it has a achieved. I respect plenty of their work but I don’t find their work ethic as a whole the most respectable thing. People don’t have to bring up their work all the time, just don’t act a fool and attack people that respectfully critique William and Catherine’s.

When did I say them stumbling out of clubs for fun is the type of fun I’d like to see from them? I know they make the work they do fun they’re just not the most exciting and fun individuals to me. Earthshot is a big thing and I’m not uncrediting it but you’re strongly mistaken if you believe it’s the most impactful thing ever. The quality of what they do is very influential but they need to be more willing to work on the quantity. Both matter.

My #1 post of 2022

Today at my library I walk into work and half the building lights are off and my co-worker is walking around with a kids book that makes bird noises held above his head pressing buttons to sound out random birds calls. Apparently there are two (2) birds that got in through the open doors to due A/C not being on yet and the building feeling like a sauna.

The birds cannot be got to leave, and have been given the run of the building. Bird poo has already been cleaned up once. Suggestions have been made about getting an emergency library cat, calling a local natural center, and also making loud noises?? but staff moral is low and care about the birds being made to leave is decreasing by the minute.

**Update, it is eight hours later and we are approaching closing time  and one bird can no longer be found at all. The remaining bird is hoped to be convinced to return from whence it came when we close and can turn off the lights again and somehow make the exit doors look appealing to birds????
