i love ichiban so much. like in general but like. he's so neurodivergent. so so much i haven't been able to let go of it since i started playing. he's still filtering everything through dragon quest after 18 fucking years in jail without touching it and his loved ones realize and adapt to this bc they're cool so theyre like,, okay,, lemme put it like this. so you got a debuff from your one night stand. it's gonorrhea. and he's like okay i understand. that blows but im ready to hear my treatment options. and then he'd handle it like a well adjusted adult. he just processes it in a roundabout kinda way. he's just like me fr. and he's fully hallucinating gamer shit in the middle of street fights and his friends (who he met 2 days ago) are like lol ok cool cat that's wild. keep hitting them idc. my stats are going up? that's actually really cool ty for telling me i love you forever. i would die for you. and they're right for it. like they just accept him as-is with little fanfare because that's just ichi. they get on his level conversationally and it's not some awful horrific burden to talk about a thing he likes. and he hallucinates and he's not portrayed as some scary monster or unsettling pitiable thing. he's a cool guy and he's got all these nd traits and i think a lotta ppl probably need to see that. it feels very humanizing to me idk. he's a deeply kind and intelligent and loyal and dependable and wonderful man. one of the game protagonists ever maybe THE game protagonist ever and he's always in fucking situations constantly, as is the case with every rgg protag. anyway i love him. i know a lotta ppl look at him and go oh adhd for sure bc he's bouncy or whatever. and while i question that impulse i see you,, but that is NOT all okay. my man has some comorbidities. he's at a quaint little buffet of the dsm-5. something is UP with him and he's doing marvelously and everybody loves him and I love him too. yeag

Random QL Superlatives: 2024 Edition

This list is gonna contain qls (and a few kdramas) I’ve watched this year, rather than the qls that were released this year.

Best Hosaka: Namgoong Shiwoon, Light On Me

ICYMI, I am obsessed with Hosaka from I Cannot Reach You, for his complete disdain for miscommunication, his incredible radar for bullshittery, and his otherworldly ability to not-so-gentle-parent bl boys into talking to each other. Every BL should have a Hoska. A Hosaka is a crucial part of a healthy BL ecosystem imo. So this year���s Best Hosaka Award goes to.. Namgoong Shiwoon!

Namgoong is kind yet firm in his opinions (and boyyy does he have them in a bushel and a peck), goofy in physicality yet measured with his words, and an all-around stellar friend. He would figure out the exact ways you’re ruining your life before you’ve even had a chance to emerge from the mental rubble, and will meet you with a detailed presentation on how to fix everything. Get a Namgoong for your life and listen to them for the best results!

I am still laughing at how Sangwoo believed with his entire precious heart that putting up a foot tall, easily removable physical barrier is gonna deter my man Jaeyoung, menace extraordinaire and dedicated Sangwoo-annoyer. Boy, did you even wanna try?

Saddest Sex Scene: At 25:00, In Akasaka

I was already heartbroken when Hayama and Shirasaki tried, failed, and emotionally devastated each other by attempting to “rehearse” for their intimate scene the previous night, but the filming of the actual scene took the pieces of my shattered heart, stomped on it, and then set it on fire. The aborted pinkie touch should be made illegal due to the amount of pain it inflicts on the masses.

QL 2024: Favorite Pairs

Tagged by @abstractelysium in their QL 2024: Favorite Couples Tag Game, and while I have been breaking the Top Five rule (and all the other rules) with the other Favorites I’ve been tagged in, because they are the engineer of this whole thing I will be good and stick to my Top Five couples of 2024, again in no particular order:

Kasuga and Nomoto- She Loves to Cook and She Loves to Eat

I LOVE THEM! I mean, that will be a trend with every one of these pairs so I should maybe not start with that. BUT, they are such good compliments of each other, it’s literally in the name of the show. Nomoto and Kasuga are just the nicest, kindest people who do nothing but care for each other and the people they love. They are so bright and warm, and I know they will be together for a very long time. I want to be in their friend group so badly. 

Karan and Achi- Cherry Magic: Thailand

I love these boys in every universe. But I especially love these boys when they are actually allowed to engage in physical intimacy in the try to lose your virginity show. If you look up the definition of “simp” there would just be a photo of Karan sitting there waiting for you. I really enjoyed the take that Cherry Magic: Thailand had on Karan learning about Achi’s powers. Newwie did such an incredible job performing Achi’s awkward energy and obviously there is no better couple on earth than the one that whale screams the second his crush rests his head on his shoulder. 

Latte and Almond- Knock Knock, Boys!

Sex scene of the year if you ask me. I love how much these two love each other, and I love how much Latte tolerates Almond continuously trying to get a look at that dick for a birth mark. I know I’m really hung up on the sex scene between them, but I think it’s a really good manifestation of their relationship. Like truly I love the fact that Latte is sexually experienced and Almond is very much not and yet their first time is still incredibly awkward because of course it would be. In my mind, it is a sign of a good relationship when people challenge themselves for the sake of their partner. Latte being hesitant to go to the beach because of past experiences but knowing that it would make Almond happy and deciding to go and having a much better time than he expected was one of my favorite moments of the entire show. I look forward to Almond turning off the blaring alarm Latte will sleep through foe as long as they are together. 

Lee Do Hoe and Sin Ju Yeong- Let Free the Curse of Taekwondo

Okay I know compared to the others on this list Do Hoe and Ju Yeong’s relationship is a little bit of a harder sell because of what Do Hoe put Ju Yeong through for all those years. But. I do genuinely believe they are really good for each other and life and trauma got in the way. It is so important to me that the first real and genuine smile we see from Do Hoe is because of Ju Yeong. I am so glad they had each other, for however brief a time as kids, and I am thrilled they found each other again as adults, the Ju Yeong called Do Hoe on his bullshit, and that they both stood together to destroy the fucking dojo that caused both of them so much pain. I really love that we end this show with Do Hoe and Ju Yeong jobless, in a small apartment, with Do Hoe studying for the college entrance exam he’s failed multiple times. But they are together, and they are happy, and they are free. 

Shiba Ryoma and Haruto- Love is Like a Poison

THIS IS WHAT I WANT IN A BATTLE COUPLE!!! Ryo and Haruto love and support each other and it is not hard at all to find that in the evidence. Ryo has been enamored with Haruto from the moment they met, they will literally fight for each other both in court and in warehouses where they have been kidnapped by evil doers. I love that their love is so secure that there was no concern about Haruto pulling a noble idiocy. He immediately starts talking to Ryo’s plants, they can actually read each other’s minds, and most importantly to me, Haruto’s little group of homeless children immediately adopting Ryo into the fold as a person they can trust and go to when they and/or Haruto need help. I love how staunchly Ryo stands up for and trusts Haruto, and how uncompromising he is in making sure everyone knows where he stands when it comes to his job versus his lover. If you have not watched Love is Like Poison, please take this as a sign to do so.

This is obvious for Sam and Fuyu. Neung I just think is weird for starting shit with a highschooler (legally an adult though, so I guess it's fine?!) but I'm not gonna unpack all my opinions on Blank here anyway. I didn't like the show enough for that. But I do love Neung <3 yay <3

Happy Thanksgiving! Here’s a little treat of what I think each of the Ichigang would make!

Kasuga: He’s in charge of Mac and cheese…. Homeboy just went and bought some Kraft. Somehow managed to burn it? Thankfully Zhao and Joongi are there to save the day. Wanted to cook the Turkey originally, but that meant him using a deep fryer and the gang didn’t feel like calling the fire department

Kiryu: Isn’t quite sure what to make/bring. So he decides something basic, making some good old fashion rolls. Not only can this man cook up a fine dish of kickass, he also makes amazing bread and rolls

Nanba: He’s making a salad, from what everyone can expect: random plants found across the city. It looks somewhat edible. Atleast he bought the salad dressing

Adachi: Just alcohol. That’s it. Might bring some corn in a can and call it a day.

Saeko: She’s making some pies. Pumpkin pie and apple pie. Spends all morning making sure the lacing on the apple pie is perfect. She would definitely serve the women first before letting the men fight over slices

Zhao: I think the most obvious one, he’s in charge of the turkey! Man spends atleast 3 hours just prepping it to be baked

Joongi: Has his own secret gravy recipe he spent years perfecting. Refusing to let anyone see him make it, nor even Soenhee (though she might try to the Geomijul technology to spy). Also offers to steam all the veggies

Seonhee: Cranberry Sauce. She have the perfect recipe for making it (definitely didn’t use the Geomijul to help find the perfect ingredients). Takes a lot of pride in this sauce, Joongi might be jealous how much she’s praising her cooking over his

Eri: Eri is a pro at cornbread! Has Omlette assist her in making the tasty bread. Using fresh eggs, and the fanciest corn she feeds Omlette. This cornbread is one the group will be begging her to make again

Tomi: He’s doing the stuffing. Has a few good recipes from various people he’s given rides to. He decides to make a few batches and see which one the group likes the best.

Chitose: Chitose is doing some fine mashed potato’s! The guys have annoyed her, once again. So what better way to get her anger out that beating up some potato’s. Just the right about of seasonings, everyone is definitely getting seconds

year-end drama recommendation

Good year to you all! I hope you all had a great winter break, that you were all smothered with love, and crushed by the weight of the presents you all dreamt about. I smell the end of the year, so here I am, crawling out of my dark cave, ready to send you all into our annual Japanese drama heaven. Welcome! I hope 2024 was kind to you.

As you are getting ready to say goodbye to 2024, making plans, buying party accessories, and cooking, so am I, reminiscing and compiling some notes to get this yearly reviews out to ship them right under your thumb! You will be served 4 wonderful J-dramas I watched in 2024 and deemed worthy, like a 4 course meal, and our dining will start today, on the 28th of December and end as usual, on the 31st of December!

Now, let's start with an appetizer. I proudly present

1. Tsukuritai Onna to Tabetai Onna (2022) & Tsukuritai Onna to Tabetai Onna Season 2 (2024)

1st season: 10 eps, 15 min each; 2nd season: 20 eps, 15 min each

How clever am I, sprinkling food metaphors to smoothly show off my first pick — She Loves to Cook, and She Loves to Eat Season 1 and Season 2. As you can see, it's a two for one deal, and I truly believe that one cannot go without the other, like bruschetta and tomato.

Season 1 of She Loves to Cook, and She Loves to Eat shows us the sweet beginnings of our two main characters, Nomoto and Kasuga. The girls are neighbours and they coincidentally start a routine. Nomoto's passion is cooking, and she tends to cook too much when she doesn't control herself. She believes that good food comes in big portions and her dream is to serve big family plates of home made dishes. Is it a coincidence or fate that Kasuga loves eating? Kasuga appreciates good and hearty portions, so when Nomoto proposes to share leftover food with her, she's more than happy to take her upon that suggestion. And, as the saying goes in my native language, "przez żołądek do serca", which would loosely translate to "the way to someone's heart is through their stomach".

We watch Kasuga's and Nomoto's relationship bloom in an inconspicuous setting and I believe it's a good foundation for season 2 to dive into their dynamic.

In season 2, we see how Nomoto and Kasuga come to terms with their feelings for each other, and how both of them bravely confess. The second season is also heavier, because it delves deeper into a mature relationship, and what comes with it. The main characters reveal more of their insecurities and issues, and we see how they deal with them alone or how they overcome them together. We are also introduced to new characters, who give us even more trials and tribulations, expand the representation of the drama, and help our main couple get together.

I believe that most of the 1st season's setting is around Christmas, and the final episode is happening on New Year's Eve, with Nomoto and Kasuga watching together the first sunrise of the New Year, which is quite perfect for the season.

This series is not only a good watch, but a good source of inspiration as well. I cannot count how many times I cooked or prepared something just like in the drama or something that was inspired by it. Prepare a good snack before you watch!

Japanese QL Corner

ICYMI: There are so many Japanese qls airing weekly, so I’m going to start posting this little round up at the end of each week. Most of these shows are on Gaga and I highly recommend watching!

Chaser Game W

We've reached the stage with this one where I'm just gonna say we should keep watching for the ratings and enjoy the pretty gifs.

Tsukuritai Onna to Tabetai Onna 2

I got to watch episodes 5-8 of the new season this week, and I promptly lost my mind over how good this show is. It somehow got even better between seasons; the creators have some things to say about the experiences of women under heterosexual patriarchy. I already wrote about Kasuga's family trauma storyline and how much it meant to me, but these episodes also gave us Nomoto's ongoing queer awakening and journey to define her sexuality, the introduction of a new queer bestie in Yako, a better understanding of Nagumo and the careful and steady deepening of her relationship with the gals, a new confidant for Kasgua in Fujita, and Nomoto and Kasuga inching ever closer to defining what they are to each other. The world of the show and the support network around our leads continues to expand, and I am loving every moment. This drama is excellent and I cannot implore you enough to go to @furritsubs and catch up.

My Strawberry Film

Kicking off the last Drama Shower show of the season! This is a high school story featuring a classic trio—the Pining Gay, the Chaos Bisexual, and the Budding Lesbian. Obviously, I love them. I like the mood of this one—it's quite a tonal shift from the last show in this series—and the color grading is blue, blue, blue. And there's a mystery afoot as they try to track down the beautiful girl captured on film. Looking forward to more!

Sukiyanen Kedo Do Yaro ka

I continue to love this show, though I am not entirely sure how I feel about the turn things took with Mizuki this week. I did not really want this to go the full blown love triangle route; I am more interested in a version of this story where Sakae and Soga try to figure out these adult complications from the foundation of being in a relationship, not with the constant interference of a third party. So few dramas are willing to get the couple together early and let them face things together rather than constantly playing the will they, won't they game, and I was hoping Sukidoya was going to be one of them. That said, I like that Mizuki is sticking around in the story because he's an interesting character, and I like the conflict with Soga's job (we have a preponderance of Japanese shows about unreasonable work conditions airing atm) and the temporary nature of his time in Osaka. That he's worried about eventually leaving tells you all you need to know about how much he likes and respects Sakae. If he felt casual about him he would not be worried about complications that far down the timeline. Let's see where they take this love triangle thing next week; I'm hoping it will be brief.

Perfect Propose

Great episode this week, and I love the way they continue to deepen the backstory for these two. Hiro being the first person to need Kai rather than pity him makes so much sense for their dynamic and why Kai would be so attached to him. And of course, when Kai returns the situation is the same; Hiro definitely still needs him. I love that they took a source of shame for Hiro and turned it into a reason why he and Kai are so compatible. Kai wants to take care of him—and he's not the only one! Loved seeing Hiro's coworkers express concern for his well-being and recognize how this job is grinding him down and breaking his spirit. It was so validating to hear from another high performer that the job is miserable and he should quit. It has nothing to do with failure; as Kaneko said, it's about seeking the life he truly wants. He sees Hiro's talent and knows he will not be able to flourish in this hellish work environment, and I thought it was so kind and compassionate of him to try to help Hiro see that. Also shoutout to Hiyori for sitting her ass back down and missing the last train when she realized prime gossip was about to arrive to her table, she's just like me fr.

Ossan's Love Returns

We are clearly in the drama spiral for the season now, and this show seems to be coming for my beloved Kurosawa. Thanks, I hate it! But the show found its humor again this week even as the sad plotlines for the side characters continued, and I was very happy to see it back in top form. I loved this story with Maki and Haruta caring for Goro for the week, and how it affirmed for them that they are actually not interested in having children. I told @bengiyo and @twig-tea when we saw last week's preview that Maki seemed like the type who wouldn't like children, and I was glad to see that affirmed by the show, and crucially, that he didn't change his mind via the power of Goro's cuteness. Not all people want to be parents, and it's so nice and refreshing to see a loving couple decide they just want to focus on each other, and that you can like kids and spend time with them without needing to have one of your own. I loved, too, that we got some focus on Chizu's struggles as a single mom, and her family rallied around her and made it clear she has support. Takegawa's sudden not-at-all-selfishly-motivated interest in polyamory was hilarious, as was Chief's journey to figure out what was causing his stress—until it wasn't, of course. I was glad Chuoko was with him when he got the news. And I am really hoping that rooftop kiss was Kiku's goodbye, and we will be seeing him move on from Izumi soon.

Bonus: Kimi no Koto Dake Mite Itai 

Shoutout to @my-rose-tinted-glasses for giffing this show and reminding me I still hadn't seen it! It was not accessible to me back when it came out and it fell off my radar for awhile. I watched today and thought it was just delightful. A short, sweet, warm hug of a friends to lovers high school bl with two very lovable leads. I highly recommend checking it out.

Tsukuritai Onna to Tabetai Onna

Usual warning. This is not a review. It's just me needing to put what I'm feeling somewhere. I just finished watching so there's absolutely no critical thinking happening here.

TL;DR: WATCH THIS SHOW!!!

Well I finally finished all of Tsukutabe and to say my heart is full feels small somehow. My heart grew. I remember when I finished the second season of Kinou Nani Tabeta, I was so overwhelmed with emotions and honestly I was not expecting to be in that place again. I called it magic and I have to echo those same feelings here. Because this show it's magic. It's a gift that makes me feel thankful that I got to experience it. I really have a hard time writing about this because I'm feeling so many things so I'll try to split it in smaller bits so maybe it sounds a bit more coherent. No promises though.

Kasuga I have to start here because she's my favourite, in case it wasn't obvious by my choice of pfp. She's so cute. I fell in love with her almost immediately. I've talked about this before but to see a character eat the way she does on screen healed something in me. The way she looks at Nomoto made me melt multiple times and her smile completely shatters this cold heart of mine. The episodes around her family had me bawling [normally I would wish for her father to be run over or something, but that would only add misery to Kasuga's mother, so I just hope he dies first] but seeing her put herself first and release herself from those expectations was amazing. Her journey was incredible and it was great that she was able to open up to Nagumo and Nomoto. I have to congratulate Nishino Emi for her portrayal of Kasuga. Considering she's not an actor (she's a musician btw) and this is her only acting credit, I thought the way she embodied Kasuga was really good.

Nomoto I adore her. Her happiness was infectious and she made me smile so wide. Cooking for your loved ones is just such the most beautiful thing to me and she and Shiro are the standard and everyone else can take notes. She's more open than Kasuga so we have more of an insight to her and to watch her awakening was amazing. It reminded me a bit Sakuko [Koisenu Futari] in the beginning. Her facial expressions always gave her away and it was such a contrast to Kasuga's reserved demeanor.

THEM The Yin and Yang. They are so different on the surface but the way they come together and create a space for each other is just so beautiful to see. They are learning from each other through these two seasons and growing together and navigating the realities of their relationship and what it all means and how it makes them feel. I just love the happiness in Nomoto's eyes whenever Saguka is eating her food and the happiness and little smiles in Kasuga's face whenever Nomoto got really excited by a vegetable or a finished dish. They are perfect and will live happily ever after. Period.

Nagumo This girl has my whole heart. I said this before in the notes but every time she was on my screen I just wanted to give her a hug. She's fragile but resilient and although she was a bit shy at first, the way she shared her story with Kasuga and quickly became the person she went to for advice was so good. And to see her getting help, finding relief in a word and hope in the future made me cry so much. And when she took that bite it made my heart grow that very second. And just as a aside, the fact that the show chose to have her eat while the others didn't notice and after they did, they still didn't make it a big deal made me ugly cry. Because that's the magic part. That when I feel that a show knows what it's doing with its characters. And the moment at the end in the job thing when she said she wanted to do something that allowed to talk to people had me clapping like a proud mama.

Chiharu I love her. I love that Nomoto had someone by her side from the beginning that she could confide in and that was supportive. And that when she "messed up", like with the wedding talk, she was given space to reflect and understand and give her friend the space she needed to talk about it. Cause it's okay to not be all woke - god, I hate this word - all the time. As long as people are ready to listen to each other and learn from one another. Also always happy for the screw marriage discourse.

Yako The ace rep had me clapping at first of course. It's so rare anywhere in media so it always adds points no matter what. So obviously... I love her. She's such an amazing supporter. She's so kind and open. Her relationship with Nomoto was wonderful but she and Naguma gave me some of my favourite moments ever. Because being supportive sometimes is just being present, is asking questions, is just listening to understand and not judge. And to want those around you to grow. That moment where she realized what the move meant for Nagumo and asked her to go for a walk was so good.

THESE WOMEN. I love these women. All of them. How they come together for each other, and the kindness and understanding made me ugly cry on more than one occasion.

The Food This show really speaks to me in several ways and I know I spoke of this before but I keep coming back to food.

You eat too much or you don't eat enough. Or you don't eat it the right way. Or eat the right things. Food is just sustenance for some. Food is joy to others. Food is what makes some of us get up in the morning. Food is to eat alone or together. It means a lot of different things to different people. It's food. You eat yours and I eat mine. Can we just not pay so much attention to this? Now that I got that out. Japanese shows are the best at using food in their stories. And more often that not, it's a place of joy and healing. And the fact that this series showed that food can also be a source of trauma and something that makes you different, as well as a place where you can heal is so important to me. Because I can relate to both those things. The dining table has been a place where I felt wrong different but also a place where I found so much joy.

The Magic Much like Kinou Nani Tabeta this show is full of magic. It was made by people that needed to make it, to talk about things that mattered, from a place of empathy and love. I feel like I was meant to watch this show. The universe conspired to put it in front of me. I understand this sounds super corny, and honestly if anyone else said this words to me I would be rolling my eyes way back into my skull, so I get it. But it feels cosmic somehow. Also fun fact that helps the magic of it all. One of the characters and I share a last name. Me, little portuguese me, and a japanese character from this show. Can you imagine the odds? And no, I have no connection to Japan whatsoever, and my last name isn't even a very common one in either country. So really it has to be magic, right? Also, I have a small confession. GL's were never my favourite. I'm enjoying 23.5 a lot for example but I'm never in a rush to watch them. I have a bias against them that I never really examined, except that I find that I'm much more critical of them so I enjoyed them less. But this show, these women, just moved the needle a bit. There are important conversations here, not just from a queer standpoint but from a female perspective that really resonated with me, so I might need to readjust some things. Anyway, I have a lot of feelings but this is already long. I'll be thinking about this show a lot more, and there will be giffing for sure so I won't leave these characters any time soon. Also, did I mention?, I LOVE Kasuga. SHE IS EVERYTHING TO ME and one of my favourite characters of all time.

I already talked about the kindness in this show but I need to say it again. It's all about the kindness. These women. They are all so open and kind and because of that they are all better people and happier people. Maybe we can learn from them. If only we could be a little more kind to each other.

Nari's Tsukutabe Superlatives! (Part 3)

Comic Superlatives | Drama Superlatives

So here we are, just a few days shy of Christmas. Volumes 1-2 and the first season of the drama are just the right things to enjoy this time of year, you know! I've even semi-joked that S1 is technically a Christmas movie and folks should add at least one specific re-watch of it for the season~

Anyway, this is the final part to my Tsukutabe Superlatives series. This one's covering things that have overall representation in both versions. You know, generalized stuff. There's also a silly bonus superlative at the end of this post because of an overlap between things I've been enjoying lately. So, let's get down to it, huh??

MOST RELATABLE CHARACTER

"Makisu!"

So it's obvious I love the leading ladies. They're the stars. They're both amazing, but I wanted to give an extra shout-out to the woman who I feel a kinship with. Nomoto is such a dork, I love her. She gets really flustered like I can get if something doesn't immediately go the way I want it to (and can be calmed down in similar, simple ways). She's got a passion for cooking as a hobby and doesn't really see herself doing anything more than that (like cookbooks and influencers). That's me with drawing! Ever her romantic backstory is very similar to my own. Sure, her first love didn't happen until her 30s, but I had the same vibes as I was growing up and then found Leigh online back when we were seniors in high school. And even then, I experienced a lot of that "Am I REALLY a lesbian?" vibes Nomoto had until Yako explained stuff. Also, canonically, Nomoto is demisexual....just like me! The things she experiences as she falls in love with, confesses, then lives with Kasuga are so similar to my own things with Leigh lol. Maybe some of my own experiences end up bleeding through the fanworks I make, too~

There are headcanons that I subscribe to that she is possibly autistic (compared to Kasuga's more obvious traits) but masking REALLY hard due to her upbringing and what's expected of her, and honestly. Yeah. That's me, too. I'm not officially diagnosed, and I don't want to self-diagnose either, but I have similar traits she does as someone who is also, probably, undiagnosed.

BEST SUPPORTING CHARACTER

Yakoooo! Beacon of guidance for all the ladies in the story. She's amazing. I'm glad we have "elder queer" representation here. It would be fun to see nothing but romantic bumbling, but that may end up messing things up in the long run. Good thing Nomoto befriended this woman online! Also I love that they're oomfs. Need more of that online buddy rep!

WORST CHARACTER

Yeah. There's a worst...and it's Kasuga's dad. Nah, he doesn't deserve a picture. But my god I wanted to strangle him after the phone call with Kasuga. He was dealing all the low blows so fast. I do love the moment of vulnerability the drama ended up showing, though. It was all Emi Nishino's idea in that regard. She admitted in an interview she really had trouble keeping it together during this moment and was trying to keep herself looking all stoic as Kasuga normally does, but then she thought...well...I'm sure a little bit of emotion would show up, especially if Kasuga talks to someone she trusts. She voiced her thoughts to Manami and the latter just reminded her that, as long as she didn't slip out of character and felt like she was still in Kasuga's shoes, it should be fine. I love the drama version of this moment more because of this, by the way. They really brought out some raw emotions that STILL felt in-character!

BEST ARC

I had to think hard about this one since I'm limited to what the drama has shown (I actually love the current arc in the comic the most but it's not adapted....yet). So for now, I'd like to tread back on the last "award" and say this storyline - Kasuga's Family Arc (unofficial title) - is a close second.

I was really feeling for poor Kasuga during this whole thing. We see that she is frightened, paranoid, and downright emotional about her past. She tries not to show it, but it really was eating at her. Then she takes that plunge, so to speak. She frees herself from her past. But it HURTS. Her father doesn't go without a fight, ugh...And then she finally tells Nomoto, though the two universes split on when she tells her and it does affect things a little...but she tells her and the overall result is the same - she has love and support. She has her chosen family she can rely on. Augh~ Beautiful~

FAVORITE DISH

I would say the harako rice because it does look really tasty, honestly, but there's some special significance with the stollen I can't deny. They even promised to make a more proper one by next Christmas in the story. Will we ever get to see that? Will the promise be kept? It would be a good marker of how far they've come in their relationship, that's for sure!

BEST COMEDIC SCENE IN BOTH VERSIONS

Speaking of stollen...When Kasuga was denied more, at first, because Nomoto didn't even explain the tradition to her and she ended up eating the piece in one (or two, depending on version) bite(s).

BEST ROMANTIC SCENE IN BOTH VERSIONS

Okay...I can't avoid it. GET TEASED MUTHAFRICKS! (especially as the comic and the drama play the same scene a bit different). Not going into more details! Just trust me...Chapter 40 is gonna be gooooood~ (and Episode 30, as mentioned in the Drama Superlatives, is also really gooooood~)

(PERSONAL) FAVORITE RUNNING GAG

The fact that these two befriended one another, then confessed and started dating AND now live together.......................but they still call each other by their surnames. I've even made silly sketches of them getting married and even raising a kid together and they still use their regular surnames lmao. Even most of the fandom still just addresses them as such, me included! If you use their first names, that's fine! You're in the same small group as Nagumo lol

Actually, the moment Nagumo (in the comic only) uttered their first names with the -chan suffix is still such comedy gold. Kasuga drops her donut! Gasp!

FAVORITE FANFIC OF MINE (either universe)

I felt bad after writing Parts 1 and 2 and not actually giving a shout-out to my fanfics. I was thinking visually, okay? Agh, not an excuse lol

But anyway, Tsukutabe made me write WAY more than I usually have in the past 20 years of general fandom. So many to choose from...but I gotta hand it to "Be Selfish." It's my most popular fic in general (over 60 kudos on AO3!), it still reads fairly well, definitely not a stream-of-conscious fic like most of my other works (which isn't bad, but can make for awkward reading later, I think lol). It has all sorts of fan art attached to it - from me, but hey! If someone gets inspired, I want to see your interpretations, too! *wink wink, nudge nudge* Anyway, I actually re-read this one often. 'Tis a good one if you are okay with the rating! (But really, you should check out all my fics on AO3~)

BONUS: BEST MANAEMI INTERACTION

They sure did meet a lot this year compared to the post-S1 era, huh~? They have both said how the distance just kinda closed in the more they worked together and now they're getting together for food dates and giving us, essentially, freebie Tsukutabe continuations during this drought of new content.

But my fave is still the time Emi had announced her month-long vacation overseas back in September, and Manami's reaction was to offer her a send-off party, and they just have a BLAST both in the photos and in the comments ("If I get lonely, I'll video call you~~ And I will~~~" - Emi). Remember the naan meme from the drama superlatives? Yeah, never mind the one piece of naan, we were all eating the whole dang curry party that night! lmao

She Loves to Cook and She Loves to Eat 2 Eps 9-12 Stray Thoughts

Last time, Nomoto and her new online friend had a watch party and discussed the nature of asexuality and homosexuality coexisting, and Nomoto shared about being in love with Kasuga; I'm a big fan of Yako. The ladies managed to connect more with Nagumo, and we learned she has an eating disorder where she can't eat in front of strangers. However, she did make donuts with them and took some home. Kasuga also managed to sever ties with her father after thinking about it and talking with other women. She asked if Nomoto would support her, and of course she did. I will never stop thinking about the Chosen Family scene.

Episode 9

Yes, Yako, coach her. We cannot let them exit this season without talking through their feelings for each other.

I have never identified with a character more than Yako. I would also enjoy my food and wine while watching my friend sweat over the crush.

Yako backstory! It really is hard in your teens when you are deeply out of alignment with other queers about sex.

The power went out and Kasuga immediately went to check on Nomoto. You love to see it.

Sorry, Kasuga, but it's not often we escape compulsory heterosexuality and still have a positive interaction in a sales environment like this.

Nagumo, I love you. You have finally given us a reason to have Kasuga voice her thoughts aloud.

This show really said plainly that the presumption of heteronormativity hurts and upsets people who don't fit that mold.

I really love this show detailing how harrowing pining is when you don't know if the other person is queer and the relationship you've built means so much to you.

Episode 11

Episode 21, you aired on Valentine's Day. Please don't let me down.

This former Valentine's Day and White Day gifting tradition sounds tedious as hell.

I didn't expect Kasuga's family troubles to end with that one phone call, and here goes the aunt downplaying Kasuga's feelings and bulldozing over her expressed boundaries.
