Horror Movie of the day: Evil Dead Rise (2023)
Beth and her sister Ellie have been stranged for a while. When the former finds out she's become pregnant, she contacts the later to a fairly tepid response; turns out her husband has left her and she's got no time for a sister that rarely ever comes to visit. That is, until an Earthquake opens a path to a hidden appartment that profusely and evidently begs to be left untouched… so of course Ellie's son Danny gets in and takes the book of the dead along some vinyls to home with him. As the inevitable meddling with the occult happens, Ellie gets possessed, and now Beth has to protect Danny and his sisters Beth and Kassie from their undead mother.
The latest entry in the Evil Dead series, this movie by Lee Cronin follows on the steps of the 2013 reboot and foregoes the more comedic elements from the original trilogy. What you get instead is an opressive atmosphere of claustrophobia and paranoia, all of which is now undercut by some absolutely cruel displays of brutality and manipulation from the most unstoppable deadite than has ever been. After things go south, any moment of levity is pretty much a result of black comedy or a turn of events going in favor of the heroes, which is saying something when those are few and far in between.
And then there's Alyssa Sutherland's stellar performance as Ellie and her possessed self, with her deadite form absolutely stealing the film through an unnervingly creepy performance where her every movement has impecable timing, enhancing the notion of an inhumanly reanimated corpse, taking the body horror of the series to new heights and creating a brand new horror icon in the process.
It's admittedly not the most cerebral film and relies a LOT on the intense gore, but with a stellar cold opening that gets recontextualized by the rest of the movie, the end result is a violent tour de force from a franchise that somehow manages to reinvent itself more than 40 years later.

Evil Dead Rise (2023)
Tumblr media
Don’t let the semi-comical (though extremely gruesome) pre-title sequence fool ya; Evil Dead Rise is not a horror-comedy. I can’t vouch for the Ash vs. Evil Dead television series, but 2013’s Evil Dead wasn’t funny either. Not even darkly funny. This franchise now has two modes: splatsick horror and visceral, unsettling terror. While you may not gasp in fright often, what happens in this film is so no-holds-barred that thinking back at it, I shudder.
After learning that she’s pregnant, guitar technician Beth (Lily Sullivan) visits her sister Ellie (Alyssa Sutherland), nephew Danny (Morgan Davies) and nieces Bridget (Gabrielle Echols) & Kassie (Nell Fisher). Then, an earthquake hits Los Angeles and causes a concealed chamber in their building’s basement parking lot to open. Inside, Danny finds a copy of the Necronomicon, as well as recordings of its passages. Once played, the incantations summon the demonic Deadites.
The main cast consists of two adults and three children. I figured the main cast would be "spared" (except for psychological trauma or minor injury) while everyone else in the building would get possessed by the evil magic of the Naturom Demonto. I was wrong. Writer/director Lee Cronin gleefully tears his characters apart, leaving piles of red goo and severed limbs all over the place. What’s particularly unnerving is that you have no idea how our heroes will make it out alive. Deadites are not zombies. Shooting them in the head only puts them down for a few minutes. Once they get back up, Deadites can use weapons, may wield supernatural powers (beyond rising from the dead) and they can talk. More than talk, they can strategize, deceive and taunt. That’s particularly relevant because Deadites are nasty. Not just physically; they don’t play fair. You keep expecting this to be like a possession movie, where you can exorcise the demons out of people and bring them back to normal, but that’s not happening.
The word to describe Evil Dead Rise is “deranged”. When you see the ways people and monsters get stabbed, shot, dismembered, shredded, grated, torn apart, impaled, mangled and mutilated, you wonder what sort of person dreamt up this nightmare scenario. I knew I was in store for something traumatic when the rental screen gave me chills - remember, it's just a still image. In action, it’ll have squeamish viewers running for the hills. In a way, I think the makeup and special effects artists might have overdone it. It’s not that they’re excessive, it’s that most people will be wincing and covering their eyes so much that if the visuals had been half as good, no one would notice. Try your best to keep your eyes open, however, there are some great monsters in this movie.
This fifth, standalone entry in the series pours on the viscera but it also takes the time to craft likable characters. This means you’re equally excited and nervous when the madness starts. Yes, Danny is warned by his sister not to touch the evil-looking book but he grabs it anyway because it looks fancy and most importantly, expensive. He thinks selling it might bring the family some much-needed cash. The relationship between several of the family members may be strained but you can tell much of the tension comes from the unfortunate circumstances that have been piling on top of their shoulders in recent months. Sometimes, our heroes do make mistakes that make their situation worse but more often than not, they’re making smart choices and in their defense, no one could ever be prepared to handle the torrent of hellfire unleashed upon them. Things are not completely hopeless, but it’s not looking good.
The only major flaw in Evil Dead Rise is the opening scene. Firstly, because it means everything is told in flashback. Being shown that more goes on after the events inside the high-rise end feels unfair. Even if the entire family makes it out alive, it’s rather bleak to know they weren’t able to contain the evil and that it “lives” on. The second reason to criticize the opening scene is for its tone, which doesn’t match the rest of the movie. I wonder if it was made intentionally more splatsticky so that the die-hard fans of Evil Dead 1-3 would give this film a chance. There is something to be said about catering to your audience’s expectations, but it's inconsistent.
Evil Dead Rise is a frightening, unrelenting deluge of horror and gore that keeps you guessing, shows you something new, and gives you something to remember all while forcing its likable protagonists through the wringer. There aren’t any big names among the cast but I wouldn’t be surprised to see more than one make it big in the future. I was impressed. (June 14, 2024)

The Mosley Review: Evil Dead Rise
Tumblr media
It's a very rare occurrence these days for a well known franchise to continue after so many breaks inbetween films. Its especially rare for each sequential entry in said franchise to stay true to the style and format of the original film that started it all. The Evil Dead franchise has one of the strongest horror fanbases and like all of you Deadheads, I've enjoyed revisiting each film including the remake and the criminally underrated tv series. When a new film comes out, they tend to focus on the intense supernatural and grotesque horror that original started with versus the campy nature of sequels and the tv series Ash vs The Evil Dead. The wonderment and beauty of the first 2 films is that they stayed small scaled, sadistically violent and featured an obscene amount of gore. This film carries that same tradition and took a more personal approach to its story instead of going the traditional "scary night in a cabin" story. It was so refreshing and powerful in so many demented ways and it didn't pull any punches or waste anytime getting to the nightmare. What I truly loved this time is the family dynamic and their simple yet strong story that gives you enough to care about each character. The nightmare scenario that descends upon this cast was brilliant and each one of them had moments of blood soaked shimmer.
Tumblr media
Lilly Sullivan takes the lead as the troubled roadie and aunt Beth. I liked that she has a life altering decision to make throughout the film and how it affects her decisions. She may be the career bound and black sheep of the family, but she is strong willed and dedicated to her extended family. Gabrielle Echols was great as the second youngest sister Bridget. I loved her chemistry with her siblings and how she helped keep the fun in the home going on before the tragedy. Morgan Davies was good and insanely obsessive as Danny. There's always one person in these films that kicks off all the supernatural mayhem and Danny was the one this time. Nell Fisher was excellent as the youngest sister Kassie and she was the last shred of innocence in the film. I loved that at anytime all the family members were in danger and Kassie was not spared at all. She was loveable and you really felt the danger once the horror targets her. Now the best performance in the film hands down goes to the mother of the kids and Beth's sister, Ellie, played wonderfully by Alyssa Sutherland. I loved that we got to know her character first and how much of a loving mother she truly was. It made it all the more heartbreaking to see her go through the intense transformation into one of the most demented Deadites I've ever seen. Her physicality, voice work and manipulation of emotions as a possessed mother that fought to keep her consciousness in the beginning was awesome. It’s when she is truly dead she becomes that unstoppable force of evil. She was absolutely terrifying and fun to watch in every scene and the way she uses her environment was inventive.
Tumblr media
The score by Stephen McKeon was perfectly unsettling, boistress and haunting in the best ways. It didn't over take the film as the action delivered the scares, but the score delivered the chills. The sound design in horror films is one of the most essential parts and it was bone-crunchingly superb. The slicing and tearying of flesh, the splintering of wood and even the audio of the priest on the vinyl was creepy and unnerving. The makeup in this film was top notch for a fairly low budget horror film in this day and age. The demonic progression and decay on Ellie was outstanding and hard to look at. She unsettled me every time she was on screen and that is hard to do. The Evil Dead franchise has never been more alive than this and I can't stress enough how great this film was. It lives up to the legacy and builds onto an already strong foundation. Writer and Director Lee Cronin has made a new fantastic chapter in the franchise that satisfies and he should be applauded for his achaievement. This is definitely one of the best horror films of the year. Let me know what you thought of the film or my review in the comments below. Thanks for reading!

My top 10 korean OSTs of 2022.
Hope you had a great time celebrating the new year! I was supposed to post this last week but last year I really was the worst at keeping up with my tumblr. I guess the whole working adult thing is draining me already of my hobbies. Anyway, hopefully I'll do a better job this year. Here's my favorite OSTs of last year.
10. Suzy- Inevitable. Extraordinary Attorney Woo Young Woo was one of the most popular dramas last year and this soft cute ballad by Suzy was such a joy to listen to.
Tumblr media
9. MINO ft Gaeko- City+++. So I usually only include OSTs from korean dramas but I really loved the korean movie Seoul vibe. I don't know why I wasn't expecting much of Mino's debut as an actor and he really delievered as the courky nemesis of Yoo Ah In's character in the movie. He also co-wrote this OST and the song is so much fun.
youtube
8. Sole- La vie. This is such a cool song in english with crazy vocals and was my favorite Little Women OST.
youtube
7. Minhyun-Tree. So technically this song is from Alchemy of the Souls Part 1 and 2 but since it was released as the soundtrack of Part 2 I'll give myself and pass and add it as my favorite song of Part 2. I loved Part 1 and I am enjoying Part 2 of this epic drama. The OSTs are all so great but this one is one of my faves for sure. Minhyun's sweet vocals are just so beautiful. Ailee's I'm sorry was recently released and it's a great listen.
youtube
6. Melomance-Love Maybe. Business Proposal was a hilarious drama to watch. I've always loved Melomance's vocals so it was great to listen to this song over and over in the drama (Kim Sejong's acoustic version is also great). Bam bam's Melting is also a fun listen.
youtube
5. TAEYEON- By my side. The drama Our Blues was not really for me. It's well done though. The lyrics and Taeyeon's voice hits you right in the feels. By the way there were several songs from this drama that are amazing including Jimin's and Ha Sung Won's With you, Heize's The Last, NINGNING and Winter's Once Again, 10 cm's For Love, Punch's Bye bye and Davichi's Remember me.
Tumblr media
4. SOHYANG-Luminous. I have to confess I only watched the first two episodes of Poong, the Joseon psychiatrist however the OSTs were so good. Sohyang has such an outstanding voice and it's so well suited for a historical drama so it was no surprised I loved this ballad. Make sure to check out Solji's By Your Side and Standing Egg's She.
Tumblr media
3. CHEN-An unfamiliar day. Chen came back from the military on april of 2022 and by june he had already released an OST he's such an OST king! He also released another in november but it was this one from the drama Doctor Lawyer that I really loved. The drama was intense for sure and so were the OSTs. Make sure to listen to Freedom by Lee Changsub.
youtube
2. DOYOUNG-Unable to love. I was watching the web drama Dear X Who Doesn't Love Me, a slow burn friend to lovers drama with a supernatural spin to it, and I was really into Doyoung's portrayal of the unrequited love he has for main character and I was really emotional envolved so when I went and listen to the full live song I was overwhelmed by his delievery of this song and it really became one of my most listned OSTs of the year.
youtube
1. JEONG SEOWOON-Just watching you. This was the most iconic OST of Alchemy of the Souls and I think we have stablished by now just how much I loved the drama so this became my favorite OST of the year for sure. The epic feel of the drama was perfectly portrayed by Seowoon's vocals and the beat. Please check out the rest of the songs for this drama because there's so many great ones like Scars leave beautiful trace by Car, the garden, Aching by Kassy, Raindops by Gummy and Breath by Kim Na Young.

The Dead shall Rise: “Evil Dead Rise” Review
Tumblr media
Pictured above is the “Evil Dead Rise” poster.
Image Credit: Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema
42 years ago, Sam Raimi would create a little movie that would spark an iconic franchise and 32 years later that franchise would be rebooted by the movie called “Evil Dead” (2013) which was directed by Fede Alvarez, this movie would receive critical acclaim. Now, 10 years later…this franchise would be brought back from the dead (pun intended) with “Evil Dead Rise” (2023) which is directed by Lee Cronin. It currently holds an 84% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes which is shocking considering the content that is inside the movie, now I know the Evil Dead franchise is known for its bloody content but for me I think this might be the bloodiest one yet, this might be even bloodier than the 2013 remake. Alright, let’s bring out our chainsaws, Boomsticks, and Necronomicon’s and go straight to the spoiler-free review.
Evil Dead Rise is a 2023 supernatural horror film directed by Lee Cronin (who also wrote the movie), Produced by Rob Tapert, Sam Raimi, and Bruce Campbell (who starred in the original Evil Dead movies and “Ash vs Evil Dead”). The cast involves Lily Sullivan as Beth, Alyssa Sutherland as Ellie, Morgan Davies as Danny, Gabrielle Echols as Bridget, Nell Fisher as Kassie, Richard Crouchley as Caleb, Mirabai Pease as Teresa, Anna-Maree Thomas as Jessica, Jayden Daniels as Gabriel, Billy Reynolds-McCarthy as Jake, Tai Wano as Scott, and Mark Mitchinson as Mr. Fonda.
The Plot:
A reunion between two estranged sisters gets cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable.
Positives:
One positive I have about the movie is the tone, I liked how they combine the campy elements of the original movies with the darker elements of the remake (which I prefer…please don’t cancel me). I appreciated how they balanced the dark humor of the original movie while adding the dark and intense moments of the remake to make it not so silly. I loved how unsettling Alyssa Sutherland was in the role of Ellie, especially during the bathtub scene.
Tumblr media
Pictured above is Alyssa Sutherland as Ellie
Image Credit: Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema
The second positive I have about this movie was the cast, I really enjoyed the performances of Lily Sullivan and Nell Fisher as Beth and Kassie as their portrayals make you root for them and hope they make it out alive. I also enjoyed the characters in general as they were likeable and made smart decisions.
The third positive I have about this movie is that it was not afraid to embrace its R-Rating, there was tons of blood spilt in this movie with amazing practical effects as Evil Dead is known for that. I’m not going to look at cheese graters the same way again after a certain scene in the movie.
Tumblr media
Pictured above is Lily Sullivan as Beth

Negatives:
The only negative I have is that I wish the movie was just a little bit longer as the ending felt rushed in my opinion, but don’t let that one negative discourage you from checking out “Evil Dead Rise” wherever you can.
My Overall Thoughts:
After watching “Evil Dead Rise”, I can’t wait to see what’s next in the franchise. I really enjoyed the exploration of the theme of motherhood and how it tied into the movie. This movie was disturbing, violent, and as Ash Williams would say…``Groovy.”
Where to watch “Evil Dead Rise”?
“Evil Dead Rise” can be watched in Theaters and through digital retailers now, Blu-Ray and DVD on June 27th.
What did you think about “Evil Dead Rise”?
Feel free to comment on this post and please keep the comments respectful.
Thank you.

EVIL DEAD RISE: Exciting Blend of Modern Horror with Blood-Soaked Humor
Tumblr media
The Evil Dead franchise comes revving back with Lee Cronin's Evil Dead Rise. Fans of Sam Raimi's Evil Dead films eagerly awaited this new interpretation of the classic horror. As a fan of the series, this was one of my most highly anticipated 2023 films, and my appetite for gory, funny, creative horror was satisfied and I was left wondering where the franchise might go from here.
Evil Dead Rise follows a family living in an apartment complex that has seen better days. Ellie (Alyssa Sutherland) lives with her children Bridget (Gabrielle Echols), Danny (Morgan Davies), and Kassie (Nell Fisher). When Ellie's sister Beth (Lily Sullivan) visits, the family reflects upon their father's abandonment.
Evil Dead Rise works well to satisfy fans of the original trilogy as well as the 2013 remake with its darker tone. The connective tissue from every step in the Evil Dead franchise is present in Evil Dead Rise. And for the most part, the differing tones meld well together, creating an exciting experience with more intense moments of suspense as well as humorous scenes filled with over-the-top (in a good way) gore.
Tumblr media
Part of what we love about the Evil Dead franchise is its buckets of blood, streams of vomit, and piles of squirming bugs. If seeing ridiculous amounts of blood isn't your idea of a fun time at the movies, Evil Dead Rise might not be for you, but for those who love the franchise and crave these types of visceral yet humorous horror movies, Evil Dead Rise might become something of a morbidly comforting experience.
The cinematography in Evil Dead Rise captures what makes the franchise so exciting. Lee Cronin puts his own stamp on the deadite-filled world of Evil Dead, but blends his own style with camera work we have come to expect from Raimi's franchise: such as extreme dutch angles and Evil Force POV shots.
But sometimes the moments we are awaiting come and go without making as much of an impact as we hope (cheese grater letdown). At times, the gore and horror set-pieces in Evil Dead Rise are creative with just enough nostalgic fuel of what came before.
Evil Dead Rise comes alive with Alyssa Sutherland's hauntingly melancholy and achingly intense performance as Ellie--especially in her deadite form. Sutherland's works wonderfully to build suspense throughout the film as well as creating some of the film's deliciously campy and blood-soaked moments.
Tumblr media
The deadite design of Ellie starts subtly, building on expressions, inching them closer to eerily creepy versions of something familiar. But this all builds to a truly terrifying moment of body horror near the film's finale.
Evil Dead Rise wants to examine motherhood and sisterhood: the intensity of emotions, feelings of superiority, and desire to protect.
The film explores the animosity as well between Ellie and Beth, especially their different views towards family and children. Throwing these two into the world of deadites and books bound in human flesh allows the film to examine their dynamic with exaggerated pressure.
Tumblr media
Lily Sullivan's performance as Beth highlights what it means to be a kickass horror heroine. Evil Dead Rise doesn't skimp on the blood--and we love seeing women fight back against evil with a backdrop of blood covering every surface.
Sullivan plays Beth with nuance, establishing her personality and unique relationship with her family early on, and growing into a character who will be remembered in horror history, alongside her essential Evil Dead weapon--the chainsaw.
Children in horror can be a tricky area, but Evil Dead Rise does well at developing each child, giving them dynamic personalities and traits that continue into their more bloody and haunting scenes. Nell Fisher is a standout as Ellie's youngest daughter Kassie.
There is an exciting and somewhat comforting nostalgia in Evil Dead Rise which is seeped into a world more reminiscent of the more brutal 2013 installment with loving references to the original trilogy in both dialogue and familiar horror set pieces with slight deviations to make them original and exciting to behold, especially in a theater.
Tumblr media
But some of the instances where Evil Dead Rise tries to connect all of the previous instalments together don't work as well--such as the decision to specify that three books exist (the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis we know from the original trilogy, the Book of the Dead in the 2013 film, and the Naturom Demonto in Evil Dead Rise).
This could work well and suggests all three of these continuities could occur side-by-side, but it feels limiting tying the franchise down if they ever want to start again. But in a more exciting direction, this could mean we might eventually see some of our favorite characters show up in the same film--fighting deadite ass side-by-side--especially Ash (Bruce Campbell) and Mia (Jane Levy).
At times, the references in Evil Dead Rise are caught between too on-the-nose repetition of famous lines/iconic scenes and campily funny reminders of why we love this series so much and what makes those moments in Evil Dead history so iconic and memorable.
No matter what, these scenes feel affectionate rather than pandering, even when they might be a little too much.
Evil Dead Rise captures what we love about the original trilogy and remake in equal measure. This ED installment is filled with bloody, campy gore, uncomfortably cathartic laughs, intense performances, and eye-catching horror set pieces & cinematography.
