'When the Phone Rings' OST is SO GOOD
I haven't been watching many kdramas properly for the past year since nothing has been catching my eye, but I'm so glad I took the time to watch When the Phone Rings, because my goddd, we are so BACK besties. This is giving all the feels of the 2016 kdramas that I used to be obsessed with. I think the last time I watched a kdrama as it was airing was It's Okay to Not Be Okay and that was a riiddee. I used to freaking analyze each episode and one of the things I loved most about the show was how much the OSTs used to fit the situation and character perfectly.
The first OST they've released is See the Light by Lim Hyunsik.
youtube
First, what a voice. I love it so much.
Second, THE LYRICCSSS. THE MUSICCC. THE VIBBEEE.
The song manages to capture the mystery between these characters so well. One of the most striking things about this show is that both Baek Sa Eon and Hong Hee Joo are very mysterious - not only are they involved in a dangerous threat situation but the audience doesn't know anything about them. Their pasts haunt them and their relationship, and we are uncovering it piece by piece, which shapes how we see them. This is done so meticulously and the piano at the beginning of the song, the melody, the emotion behind it captures this PERFECTLY.
And I mean, some of the lyrics is so striking - it literally makes the audience understand the characters and their dilemma better. For example,
[Pre-Chorus] Your tender lies gonna make me cry tonight Fall like a dawn when the shades are fading out Now
The things that these two hide from each other dictate how they view each other as emotionally unavailable, cold and confusing. As shocking as it is for her to see him be kind towards her, it is as shocking to him to see her emote, to cry, to shout out in anxiety, to smile at her friends. Although it is easiest for the audience to experience Hong Hee Joo's confusion with her husband, this song shines light upon how Baek Sa Eon feels about his wife.
"Tender lies" is such perfect wording for this - neither of their lies, and especially not hers, is done with ill intention. It's almost like it is a way to protect herself against the world, to exist and survive in it. But the nature of lies, of course, is that is hides you away in darkness, it traps you in it.
Truth, here, frees it. It gives you light. It gives you life, a risky opportunity to live it but the strength to be brave about it as well. When her truth is revealed to him, there is no anger - there is only shock and confusion and a bit of happiness in unlocking an important part of her.
[Chorus] See the light waking up an unfamiliar night Stuck in my heart, hiding the cold words I'll hold you See the light open up your broken heart The deeper heart on my lips Wants you more deeply
The light that comes from truth unveils the darkness of the unfamiliar light - it unveils her broken heart to him in a way that makes him want to hold back his cold words, whether he means those words or not, and makes him want to hold her. Because he of all people also knows what its like to have your secrets revealed, to be vulnerable in the face of the one person who brings out your vulnerability - even if he isn't completely in that stage yet, he definitely is scared of it.
This song helps create a feeling of empathy between the characters, where they are genuinely finding reflections of themselves in each other. It helps us to understand what he is feeling as he discovers that she can speak, as he discovers her feelings.
Honestly, I cannot wait for next week's episodes and for most OSTs to release, because I just know it's all going to be perfect.

So after the ending scene of Episide 6, the only thing I thought about while driving was how these two songs just work so well for these characters and their dynamics. They work for all them but I feel it hits a little closer to how Bison and Fadel are feeling this episode.

AUTHOR’S NOTE | My first fic for Hyunsik is done! Whoooo! I know the smut is not as crazy and filthy compared to the other NCTeez fics that i've written, but I had always imagined this particular fic to be more on the softer and sensual lovemaking side. I hope you all enjoy. Thank you! and look forward to more BTOB and other groups 💚🩵
He couldn't help but admire the way the stars made you shine as you greeted the folks back on the space hub after a successful mission. You looked worse for wear; all of you did, really. Your squad mates, now relieved of their duties, wandered off in different directions, headed back to wherever they needed to go, hoping that by tomorrow, things would be back to normal, that you could put the memories of battle behind you and get on with your life.
"Hyunsik!" you called out to him, waving enthusiastically.
"Y/N," his arms opened wide, as you jumped towards him. He pulled you closer, into a protective embrace. "Glad to have you back safe."
"Can't leave the love of my life behind, can I?" You asked, gazing adoringly up into his face. "Besides, with your songs and sweet kisses, who wouldn't come back, just to have those again?"
"As soon as you're healed up, I'll make sure to have the love songs ready," he answered, returning your smile. "Let's get you taken care of now."
The medical officer, working over you, tended to a small injury that Hyunsik had hardly even noticed at first. Such little things had become so routine; at one point, his heart was starting to break seeing such minor wounds inflicted upon you, only to now view it as a sort of battle scar, something to be worn with pride.
He reached his hand out, wrapping his fingers around yours, not daring to release his grasp. A concerned look fell across Hyunsik's face; he never liked the idea of you putting yourself in harm's way. Of course, this came with being married to a soldier like you, but it still was no less unpleasant when his thoughts would go back to what life would be without you.
The first time he woke up from cryo sleep, Hyunsik was certain his world had ended, having been told of how long he had been sleeping. Earth was spiraling out of control: wars are being waged amongst countries, the planet is dying, humanity is struggling to live. Hyunsik and other musicians from his time were tasked to settle among the stars, to build homes and raise a new generation. They were the many hopefuls that will keep Earth's musical culture alive in the future. Years go by and in the year 2185, humanity lives in a golden era of insterstellar travel. Their discovery of ancient alien ruins on Mars propelled their understanding of science and technology ahead by thousands of years.
And now 800 years later it’s 2985 and humanity is desperately trying to find a home for the thousands of humans who have left Earth.
He was saddened, of course. Those who stayed behind were a part of a dwindling human race, who's existence was numbered and will become memories. He remembered how many had chosen to leave in an attempt to give their child the greatest future possible. Even now, in the years following their escape into the stars, Earth's fate seemed grim. There wasn't a day that went by where there wouldn't be a casualty count mentioned in passing by another fellow explorer. Humanity clung to hope and held fast.
Once the medical officer was done, your fingers once again found their place interlocked with Hyunsik's. Leaving medbay, you took a seat on a nearby bench and rested your head against Hyunsik's shoulders. He reached his arm across and draped it about your waist. A moment like this one was a precious rarity; you had a rare few days together and would be all too soon back into the galaxy to explore and make sure you can find a home where humanity can be safe and grow strong.
Hyunsik pressed his lips against the top of your head.
"I was worried about you," his voice soft.
"I'm back now," you softly replied. "I know it's hard being married to a soldier like me, but..."
"Your job is to protect humanity, and you've done so." He smiled down at you. "And while you're out there finding a home for us all, I'll be making sure we never forget where we've come from and what brought us here."
"How did I snag such a handsome, old man?" A mischievous smirk formed on your lips as you placed a soft kiss against his jawline.
"To be fair," Hyunsik laughed as he watched the inhabitants of the Nexus, the space hub, rushing about from one task to the next. "Aren’t all humans old since we slept for 800 years?"
You threw a playful smack at his shoulder. "Cheeky old man."
The first time you met Hyunsik, your life changed forever. When you met the singer-songwriter on his way to his suite with his friends and bandmates, your life was set in a new course. You would catch him sitting on a bench overlooking the galaxy, a guitar in his hand, his deep, soulful voice singing along to a song from a bygone era. He would catch you making your way to your suite, battered and bruised from battle. He had watched you silently for many days, before he finally took the opportunity to ask you to have coffee and talk. Asking you questions about the space military, life among the stars, things he had always wondered about the brave men and women that fought to maintain peace and ensure everyone had the right to choose a safe yet lonely life away from Earth. The long conversations quickly led to dates and walks hand-in-hand. In a romantic cliche, one thing led to another and, before either of you knew it, marriage had become the topic of many discussions.
The galaxy, which was before dark and strange to you, became a wonderful place to be a part of, once the fear and anxiety of exploration faded into a new life with the one you fell in love with.
Hyunsik tugged at your arm, helping you to your feet. "Let's go see what everyone is up to at Vortex."
Hyunsik led the way to Vortex, the only bar and nightclub on the Nexus, walking hand-in-hand. It was busy this time of night, which wasn't really surprising. Tucked away in the corner, a group of scientists huddled around a datapad, chattering excitedly. On stage, one of the military pilots was dancing rather ungracefully. A few of the alien species dotted around the area, happily clinking away in conversation. At the counter, there was a scruffy-looking engineer that was near face down on the tabletop, snoozing peacefully.
You joined your squadmates and friends at a table, celebrating a job well done. Drinks were passed around, people swapping stories of the adventures you've each had in your missions, which soon leads to a round of reminiscing. Hyunsik and his friends that were asleep alongside him were able to share funny moments from the past, your squadmates' eyes growing wide in amazement. A moment that was long ago, in your lifetime, was a world that was difficult to comprehend.
"What are ballads?" Sungyeol, one of your squadmates and navigational engineer, asked. "Sungjae was talking about it and I can't wrap my head around it."
“Sentimental, emotional, and sometimes romantic music?” Hyunsik responded with a question. “Did ballads die out in this time and age? What kind of music do they have nowadays?”
"Sadly, the style of music had evolved to match the pace of the world, which meant less lyrics and less melody, and all about the beat," Dongwoo, another of your squadmates, replied.
"You guys are all missing out!" Eunkwang piped up. "Ballads are beautiful! Take it from a singer! There was something about ballads, how much heart was poured into every song! It had such a warmth that was unlike any other. Think of it like... poetry in music form, or better yet, a story. Ballads had depth."
Hyunsik nodded along to his friend's words, taking a drink as he listened. "I know someone who loves ballads."
"Of course your wife would!" Changsub interrupted, everyone laughing. He looked over to you, "What do you think about ballads, our wonderful Y/N? No lying!"
"Hey! No bullying the wife," you gave him an amused glare as you tossed a napkin at his face. "I never heard ballads before I met you all but... Hyunsik changed that." You turned to look up to him. "All those lonely, quiet nights staring out at space when I'm on a mission, I think of his gentle singing and the sweet lyrics. And, honestly, they were all that got me through the hard nights out there."
"You're going to make me cry, Y/N," Sungkyu, your pilot, looked at you, his eyes glistening.
"Can one of you guys join us for the next mission?" Myungsoo, your comms specialist, questioned. "Please entertain us while I watch the galaxy zoom by on the ship monitors, because Y/N is boring."
"You're all awful," you shook your head with a laugh.
The rest of the evening was full of laughs, light-hearted insults and plenty of drinks. Soon enough, most people were leaving to either carry on partying elsewhere or heading back to their suite to sleep. The rest of Hyunsik's bandmates said their farewells and wished you both the best. You decided it was about time to do the same and leave the others to have their fun.
It was nice to be together for even a brief time. You'll be busy again with your duties, as will your husband with writing and creating songs for the new generation, but at the end of the day, both of you found yourselves happiest side by side.
Taking his hand in yours, you start your way back to your suite. "Come on. We got the night together and we are not wasting that."

You let out a sigh as you looked at the maps laid out on the tabletop, with nothing else to focus on aside from them. Everything felt so unsettling, in a world with the unknown around the next star, the next moon, the next planet. So many rumors and reports that sent a chill down the spines of your crewmates.
It had been months since you found a proper habitable world; and ever since that day, it's been an uphill struggle for all. However, every mission given, you will work your absolute hardest to find somewhere suitable for humanity. That was the oath you took to make sure a hopeful future would be realized, even if the current situations you found yourself in were overwhelming and distressing.
Your squadmate, Woohyun, eyeballed the map over your shoulder. "Looks like a mess."
"Tell me about it," you gave him a weary look.
He stared off in a daze. "Can't believe the last planet was a bust."
The previous location, which looked promising at the time, turned out to be hostile, sending you and the crew into a race against time and nature itself, before deciding a more hospitable planet must be found.
You heard shuffling as your teammates made themselves busy while you, in the meantime, buried yourself in the workload ahead. You'll need to keep morale as high as you possibly could until a planet is settled, the strain of the ongoing uncertainty weighing down on you.
"We'll need to refuel soon," the familiar sound of your comms specialist speaking from his monitoring station. "Two days max and we'll start getting warning signals."
Your squad gathered around. This wasn't anything new. Every mission, when you set off to an undiscovered corner of space, fuel wasn't always reliable. Humanity was still so young in intergalactic travel to have solved everything, and maybe in a million or so years, maybe they'd have such answers.
"Do we have enough fuel to get to the Nexus?" Woohyun pondered aloud. "Because that was a near disaster the last time."
"It won't reach that point, thankfully," Myungsoo reassured you. "But yes, that's a good idea to go back. We need supplies anyway. Dongwoo's been complaining that he's running out of ingredients for cooking."
"Because you all eat too much," Dongwoo argued back.
"Can we go back to the Nexus and get some sleep?" Sungjong, your weapons technician and, by far, youngest crew member, whined.
You pressed your lips tightly, trying to prevent a chuckle from escaping. "As long as you're sleeping once we get to the Nexus."
"Finally. Time for bed," a look of relief and joy washed over his features.
"After we go pick up supplies," Woohyun pointed out.
"You ruined my mood..." Sungjong pouted as he wandered away. "You're just the worst..."
"I can't wait to be back, myself," you laughed, watching the youngest going down the corridor with his head low.
"At this rate," Woohyun opened a set of files regarding planets nearby, which contained photos and details regarding weather, radiation, gravity... "you'll be able to spend more time with your husband."
"I have no complaints there. Wish I could have him by my side though."
You thought of him, his deep voice singing into a mic. Maybe Hyunsik was recording right now or at the very least, working hard to make his songs into an enjoyable experience, ones that can touch and move listeners' hearts, even as a new and far-off generation. Hyunsik can't physically travel with you because, despite saying that he did serve in the ROK during the 21st century, he had no space military background. Fighting human soldiers was different than fighting hostile alien life. There were those that had trained in the past, those that you lost. Each was a memory that hurts and one that had an impact.
The last thing you would ever want was to put someone so close and dear to you into a situation where the probability of survival was slim. It wasn't worth the risk.
Dongwoo patted you on the shoulder. "We've gotten lucky the past few months. Maybe luck will come again and help us."
"I'd welcome some of that," you said to him, rubbing your temple, an exhausted breath escaping.
A series of beeps caught the attention of you and the crew. A second series of beeps, followed by Myungsoo hurrying over to his terminal. You made your way up to his location, Sungjong and Woohyun at the entrance, curiously peering in to see what was going on.
"Proximity alert," Sungkyu announced loudly.
"Gravity is stable for landing and reading," Myungsoo notified the team, as they were rushing up the stairs, looking out the front window, but could see only the sea of stars before them. "Doesn't appear there's any cities or buildings..."
"Full scans aren't coming up with anything..." Sungyeol, voiced over the loudspeaker. "No radio, no transmission, no communication... Not sure if there's anyone alive..."
"Hmm," Myungsoo had a perplexed expression on his face.
"Does the atmosphere have the proper components?" You asked Myungsoo as you rushed past him to get a closer look.
He was busy typing, data quickly rushing down his monitor. "We'd run the standard tests anyway before stepping foot but the scan's coming up positive. Looks good!"
"Looks like we're having another adventure," Dongwoo looked up towards you. "Are we investigating? It's dark where we're going down. Lots of rocks and mountains, and, of course, a mountain that's looming above us is always comforting."
"Yup!" you grinned, although a nervous smile came along with it.
Another new world, full of mysteries and, no doubt, troubles. Just another day of finding home.

Hyunsik sat at his usual bench and overlooked the endlessness of the galaxy that stretched before him. The softness of guitar strings echoed out into the silence, notes joining into one and forming a melody that his mind could travel in the ocean of stars.
Lately, a surge of loneliness was brewing. It was always something he had to deal with, ever since you had embarked out into the unknown, further than any human had ever gone before. He knew that when he married you, this would be your occupation. He couldn't expect any differently. You were the hope of humanity.
Still, though...
To know he would have a lonely night in his suite once more, filled the hole in his heart that little bit more.
The emptiness was making him nostalgic. It reminded him of times when it was just him and a guitar, looking out into space. Life was different from 2025, where he performed on stage with his friends, dancing and singing in front of a crowd. His popularity reached far beyond the Korean Peninsula, a legion of adoring fans that looked forward to his every album and his every tour.
Such memories felt foreign. As if they belonged to a bygone age, now only existing to entertain the imagination, a history lesson.
He played a gentle string, the note carried by the subtle air flow. Hyunsik stared out at the stars, wishing, wondering when he might hear a message from his beloved wife, wondering when he would see her and embrace her, hold her in his arms once more.
"Across the vast universe, far away," he began to sing, "wherever in the world we are, we can see and feel love, faster than the speed of light."
Were you safe? Are you well? Where will you be tonight and tomorrow, and the day after that? What will you discover in the infinite seas of space?
"Hyunsik," a familiar and soft voice, brought him out of his thoughts.
His head turned sharply to see a face he would recognize anywhere. You, standing in front of him, looking so happy to see him, to be where you're most at home. Hyunsik was quick to get to his feet, standing eye-to-eye, as you ran into the awaiting embrace, your face buried into his shoulder, while his arms pulled you closer than ever.
"When did you arrive, love," his words were breathy and soft.
"Just now. My whole body's aching," you giggled, relief washing over you, tears pricking the corners of your eyes as he stroked his fingers through your hair.
"Good news then?" he whispered, knowing that you've been hunting for a habitable planet for what seems like forever.
"I'll report to Colonial Affairs tomorrow," you murmured against his chest. "I could sleep for a month but my main priority right now is my husband."
He placed a soft kiss atop your head and, with you tucked into his side, walked the rest of the way back to the suite, and to the world of safety and happiness within, where your greatest love lived. "What does my wife have in mind?"
"One thing for sure," you gazed lovingly up towards him, "It's been a long time since we've spent an evening together and a date is way overdue."
"A date, huh?" he laughed, a gentle, musical sound, a tone that had a familiarity and warmth you had been waiting ages for. "Are you suggesting an evening watching the stars from the bed?"
"Does this suggestion involve us naked in bed?" You arched an eyebrow at him, a wide grin upon your lips.
"Ah... how could I say no?" he shook his head at you with amusement, his hand holding tighter on you, tugging you inwards, until you disappeared into the suite.
Such was your home: the smell of familiar and comforting items, the feeling of warm arms wrapping tightly around you, of kisses upon the crown of your head.
"Hey, you. Are you going to join me, or not," you slipped from his grasp, fingers trailing up his arms.
Hyunsik stepped forward, pulling you back to him, as you yelped and laughed. "Come join me, love."
His hand cupping your cheek, eyes focused on you, sparkling, Hyunsik's lips met with yours, the gentleness of your kiss touching him so. All the love, the happiness, the warmth of your entire world wrapped up in this moment.
"Hmm, it has been some time, hasn't it?" he grinned against your skin, as you kissed away across his face and down his throat. "Want me to play some music?"
"Would love that," you agreed, biting back a giggle. "As long as it's your songs."
His answer was another kiss, smiling, eyes twinkling, cheeks warming, as the two of you were soon nestled comfortably in your bed, amongst the blankets and pillows, the view of space displayed above you. The tune of his guitar floated around you, wrapping you in its sweet sound. The lulling sound of your husband's deep voice and his romantic lyrics filling your mind, overflowing, spilling into the room. A contented sigh fell past your lips, an overwhelmingly blissful sound as you straddled his waist, with his hand running up and down the length of your back.
He reached up and removed your shirt from your body and flung it aside, his eyes never once breaking contact with yours. He traced your battlescars, the wounds you had received, so you could continue protecting the innocent. The marks of a hero. A goddess who took care and protected him, protected the rest, and continued fighting to keep the dream alive. His darling wife, an inspiration to him and to many.
"Do they look bad?" you whispered, flinging his shirt aside as well, leaving him bare, leaving him yours and only yours.
Hyunsik shook his head. "Never. Not a single scar on you will ever look bad to me." He planted a trail of soft kisses against your jawline, making your body shiver, heat rushing from the top of your head to the soles of your feet.
His lips trailed down your throat, down your breastbone. Soft, wet kisses all over, a mixture of his teeth grazing, nipping at you, a loud, lewd gasp escaping your lips, at his slightest touch. He trailed his tongue down to your nipple, mouth sucking hard, his hand trailing up your sides until his thumb rolled the other nipple between the pad of his thumb. Your body reacted to him, hips moving against his abdomen, trying to create any kind of friction.
"I missed you," he muttered. "Your voice, your skin, your scent."
A whimper escaped. "Not as much as I missed you."
He flipped you over onto the bed, your head nestled in pillows. His hands trailed down your body, his hands unfastening your trousers. Tossing them onto the pile growing by the bed, he nuzzled your ear, his body radiating warmth. You looked up at him, so full of love, heart pounding away.
He nibbled on the tip of your ear, eliciting a laugh. He slid down further, his face pressed against your stomach, leaving a series of playful kisses and licks. His hands slowly massaging your inner thighs.
"Can you ever not torture me," you grumbled as you ran your hands through his hair, giggling to yourself.
His fingers gripped the waistband of your panties, shimmying them off your hips, and slowly down your legs, throwing the panties somewhere.
"You can wait a while," he snickered. He knelt, spreading your legs wide. The flat of his palm rubbed against your womanhood, the rough pads of his fingers dragging along, ever so slightly. "How is it?"
"Fuck, I swear, it's like you haven't been inside me in forever," you said breathlessly.
"In my defense," his forefinger circling your sensitive bud, your body instantly reacting. "My wife is a busy woman, off saving humanity and the likes. Someone must remind you about the joys of coming back home, yes?"
"Home," you gazed softly into his eyes, the love, the intensity pouring from his gaze. "Home is wherever you are."
"Damn," he reached up, giving you a small kiss, his body coming closer. "That's very corny and not something I'd expect from you."
"Yet, you liked it," a sultry grin plastered on your features. "You, a 21st century musical icon."
He shifted above you, his left-hand rubbing the tip of his manhood against your slit, your head sinking into the pillow. A low, heated whimper sounded, the pressure, the way you could feel the warmth of him teasing you, was already driving you wild. "Music idol of the 21st century isn't a term I hear everyday."
You nudged him with your foot. "Hyunsik."
"Alright, alright," he chuckled, slowly gliding himself inside. The breath left your body, feeling every part of him sinking, stretching, filling every inch, your body humming with each centimetre he went deeper. "My love," he kissed the shell of your ear, his thrusts moving to a steady rhythm. "I missed you. So, so much."
The sound of your moans echoing off the walls, intermixing with his own grunting and heavy breathing. The music in your room, along with the sounds of you and your husband being intimate, had become a song for your ears only. Hyunsik was the songwriter, the producer, the guitarist. The music to your world, and he had written it all himself.
It would never have existed without him.
"Yours," you grabbed onto his arm, fingertips digging into skin as you pushed your hips further up. "Forever."
You had fought so hard, long hours spent scouring a vast galaxy and faraway places that defied imagination. Yet, right here was what drove you forward, gave you a reason to do whatever possible, just so you could return and have his arms back around you. To go home and spend a few blissful days in the universe he built for both of you.
His eyes held onto yours as he dove, deeper, harder, taking the time to listen and pay attention to every sigh, every whimper, every movement your body made. Taking the time to relish in your bodies becoming one.
And with every push, every drag, every brush and pull, Hyunsik and the starry night sky filled every inch of your heart and soul.
Your vision swam, head in a cloud. A lewd cry filled the room as he thrust sharply one more time, before your body seized with your orgasm, as wave after wave hit you, while Hyunsik soon followed, spilling, flooding into you.
Hyunsik laid on his side, panting. The stars above glittering. "I love you," he panted, his breathing shaky, body still high from the ecstasy he had felt.
"Love you more," you exhaled, dazed, while you both let the intense euphoria wash away.
Both of you fell back into the bed, basking in the afterglow. Hyunsik pulled you against him, a protective arm around your torso, hand laid against your stomach, and both of you content, drifting, mind floating as you laid in his warmth and in the safety of his love.
Hyunsik pulled up the covers, a shield from the outside world, as the stars illuminated and danced to a song, whose melody and lyrics were only heard and seen within these four walls.
A love that came from beyond space and time.

I was tagged by @foldedpaper09 to put my Spotify repeated songs on shuffle and post the first 10 to play.
Music is such a big part of me, so I love sharing the things I enjoy and listen to. So here are 10 of my most repeated songs.

As you can see, there is a bit of a theme lately lol
If anyone else wants to play along, feel free to and tag me in your post. I am curious what my followers and mutuals listen to!
