Souma-san’s songs are as bewildering and open to interpretation as usual! However, this isn’t the first song in ‘Fictions’ to be about looking back on something (gestures to ‘Hiraeth’), and this song evokes SO MUCH nostalgia. I think it’s to do with looking back on something after it’s been lost, and just remembering that, along with the pains with it (hence the scream that SCARES ME EVERY TIME but works so well). The title and repeated ‘Ventura, ventura, space people’ tie the album off with a surreal, ‘Fictions’ feel. This song is looking back on the small things in life; glancing up at the sky, the cool night air (two of my favourite things)-- back to a simpler time.

Ramblings about the Todoroki family - Part 2: The back that's too big, the mountain that can't be climbed
So this is part 2 of my ramblings about the Todoroki family. If you hadn't read yet part 1, and expecially the premise in it, I recommend you to do it otherwise you might get lost and not manage to work out how this series of meta is organized.
THE BACK THAT’S TOO BIG, THE MOUNTAIN THAT CAN’T BE CLIMBED (Chap. 31-93-165-188-189-290-291-351)
Canon information:
There isn’t much to say about these chapters which, in different ways, remark how Enji, after graduating from U.A. high, can’t close the gap with All Might, which will lead him to marry Rei in hope to create with her a heir who’ll be able to do just so.
Chap. 31 presents a summarized version from Shōto.
Todoroki Enji ‘Kore dake oboe toke. ARE wa… izure kisama o mo koeru HERO ni suru. Sō surubeku… tsukutta ko da.’ 轟炎司「これだけ覚えとけ。アレは…いずれ貴様をも越えるヒーローにする。そうするべく………つくった仔だ。」 Todoroki Enji “Just remember this. That one we’re talking about… I’ll make him a hero that will surpass you someday. In order to do that… I had/trained/created that child.”
ALL MIGHT ‘…Nani wo…’ オールマイト「………何を…」 All Might “…What…”

The next plan was, of course, to marry Rei so as to produce an offspring who could surpass All Might.
Then, in Chap. 93, Enji explains things in more details, claiming the gap between All Might and himself (which is represented visually by a rift) is the difference in their backs.

In Chap. 165 instead, All Might is visually compared to an even taller mountain than the one Enji climbed.

Credits when it’s due, Chap. 291 implies it’s not just symbolism what we see in Chap. 165. Enji used to train on a mountain.
Todoroki Enji ‘(Mukashi ore ga TRAINING ni yoku tsukatte ita SEKOTO take de Tōya wa yakete shinda.)’ 轟炎司「(昔俺がトレーニングによく使っていた瀬古杜(セコト)岳で燈矢は焼けて死んだ。」 Todoroki Enji (Tōya was burned to death on Sekoto Peak, where I used to train a lot.) [Chap. 291]

Chap. 188 has Enji think of something similar to what he was thinking in Chap. 93, this time as he fights a Nōmu, even though this time the focus isn’t so much on his frustration but on how more strength is needed to stand against such Villain as his own isn’t enough.
Todoroki Enji ‘(Kaku Shakunekken wa honō o chō kouon ni asshukushi todome hanatsu ichi gekihissatsu. Ranpatsu sureba taion ga jōshōshi shintai kinō no teika o maneku. …Ga, SPEED, POWER tomoni makete iru ue, ikutsu “kosei” o motte iru kamo wakaran ijō, dashi oshimi wa inochitori! Ore no karada wa, netsu ga komori tsudzukeru. Chap 189 has Natsuo insists on how Enji's inability to surpass All Might lead him to do what he did… all for Fuyumi to correct him saying despite what he did, Enji never gave up.
Todoroki Natsuo ‘Nani shitenda, aitsu…! Kanawanēnara hīte zōen mateyo…! Jibun ga ichiban wakattendaro, ALL MIGHT no yō ni hanarenaitte. Dakara, sōsō ni akiramete IKAretandaro… Iranē kodomo wa hottarakashi de Okā-san yamu made oitsumete… akiramete nigero yo…’ 轟夏雄「何してんだ、あいつ…!敵わねえなら退いて増援待てよ…!自分が一番わかってんだろ、オールマイトのようにはなれないって。だから、早々に諦めてイカれたんだろ…………いらねー子どもは放ったらかしでお母さん病むまでおいつめて…諦めて逃げろよ…」 Todoroki Natsuo “What is he doing, that guy…! The chapter references Chap. 93 also in another way, by having Hawks going back to the same imagery of a rift between All Might and, this time, not just Enji but all the Heroes, and Enji being the only one who was trying to close it…
HAWKS ‘(Ore ne, mitetande shittendesu yo. Honki de koeyō nante hito wa hitori mo inakatta. Anata dake desu yo. Honki de koeyō to shiteta no wa. In chap 290 Tōya too reports this same story in his video that gets transmitted to the nation.

We have a final bit in Chap. 351. It goes back to the imagery of Enji climbing on top of a mountain and seeing the mountain he can’t climb (All Might) and connects him developing his special move, Flashfire Fist with him realizing he can’t surpass All Might. At the same time, it symbolically connects the fire, the heat the move creates, with the distorted vision Enji began to have.

Cultural corner:
Senaka (背中 “back (of a person)”): The nuance is lost in the translation but a large back in Japan, is viewed as a symbol of manliness and strength, and is tied to plenty of ways to say, for example ‘Senaka de kataru’ (背中で語る “speak from your back”) means “to show an attitude without any words/to let one’s action do the talking”, ‘Senaka de oshieru’ (背中で教える “teach from your back”) means “to teach by example”, ‘Senaka o ou’ (背中を追う “follow your back”) means “follow your footsteps”. You might remember how, in the short story “No.XXX Hawks SOOTHE” of which there’s also an OAV version, Enji is all happy when Hawks arranged their seating order so that Shōto will sit behind him and therefore will stare at his back through the entire trip… or how Hawks, in Ep. 88 of the anime, commented his own back won’t manage to make anyone feel safe. Long story short… talking of someone’s back in Japan means a lot more than it does in the west.
Yama (山 “mountain”): For the Japanese, the mountain is often associated with meditation and the search for spiritual enlightenment and mount Fuji especially symbolizes purity, perseverance and eternity as well as respect and contemplation. What’s more, due to its eruptions it’s also a symbol of fire and was believed to be the mountain where the gods resided. Long story short, picturing All Might like a tallest mountain he can’t climb likely doesn’t just mean Enji couldn’t reach him but also connects to all this symbolism.
Takusu (託す “to entrust”): Although the English version translated it as “giving” it actually means “to entrust (someone) with, to leave (a matter) with someone, to place something under someone’s care”, and in Japan for Enji to entrust his ambitions and goals to his son is a perfectly acceptable option because said son, in order to be a virtuous son who has ‘oyakoko’ (親孝行 “filial piety”), which I mentioned in the previous cultural corner, should just accept the task and carry on Enji’s ambitions and goals. As said before though, this duty would normally fall on Enji’s firstborn, but, since Enji decided Tōya couldn’t do it due to a body incompatible with his Quirk, Enji can pass the duty on another one of his children… though it’s socially considered shameful for the children who’re older than Shōto not being able to do this for their father. That’s also why All Might doesn’t think ill of Enji when he said he pushed that burden on his son. It’s… old fashioned, but it isn’t considered as wrong as it would be in the west.
Renjishi (連獅子 “Two Lions”): a kabuki dance (which should have been created in 1861). I’ll quote a description for it I found in the net but you can find others in a similar tone: “A depiction of a lion’s strict training. The father lion pushes his cub over a ravine into a deep valley, maintaining a strict demeanor but in truth waiting anxiously to see if his son can climb back. Folklore has it that lion cubs are kicked off a ravine by their parent and must climb back up with intense effort. The brave attitude of the cub in the face of his father’s strict training is an emotional scene. A drama depicting the love between parent and child.” This kind of (abusive) training was often implemented in manga (especially spokon but not only) which would occasionally also reference this story as an excuse for how such a method of training was a valid way to train a person.
Hoshi Ittetsu (星一徹): an (abusive) father from ‘Kyojin no Hoshi’ (巨人の星 “Star of the Giants”) an old spokon baseball manga (1966 – 1971) by Kajiwara Ikki illustrated by Noboru Kawasaki Noboru. Hoshi Ittetsu is an ex-baseball player who forced his son to become a baseball player as well, and trained him from when he was really small in such a way he was considered a demon. Once his son finally became a player Hoshi Ittetsu chooses to become the coach of a rival team to the one of his son and train (read: abuse) another player so that he’ll defeat his son in his place. He became one of the most famous father figures in Japan because… he was considered the ideal father figure in the mid-Showa era, as he sacrificed his life to support his son as a day laborer during the period of high economic growth, and, at the same time, raised his son to become a first-rate pitcher, who later could overcome various obstacles. The fact his son through his youth didn’t want to become a baseball player and that Hoshi Ittetsu was doing all this merely because he wanted to force his son to fulfill his own dreams didn’t matter. In Japan, for wartime and post-war generations who were busy surviving and supporting their children through the war and the post-war reconstruction period, it was a common trend to entrust their dreams to their children. In the early parts of the story there are plenty of parallelisms between Enji and Hoshi Ittetsu as well as between Shōto and Hoshi Hyūma (Ittetsu’s son).
Seishin (精神 “Spirit/Persistence”): in traditional Japanese philosophy, ‘Seishin’, which manifests in hard work, hope, and (undefeatable) spirit, is considered the most important and desirable of the virtues. It’s often a core characteristic of manga characters who keep on fighting against a stronger enemy without giving up, no matter how badly they get beaten. Midoriya, of course, has it and the same applies for plenty of characters in the story but you can see it in Enji as well when he fights the Nōmu and refuses to give up and escape and, later, when he fights All for One.
Kikokushijo (帰国子女 “returnee child”): This is a general term for “children who have returned to their home country” after living for a period in a foreign country. These are children who moved abroad when their guardians moved abroad and then moved back to their home country (returned). Those who return from a foreign country often find themselves in the middle of two or more cultures, which of course lend the terms “bi-cultural” or “multicultural”. Because Japan projects a mono-cultural society, kikokushijo are simultaneously lauded and shunned. To put it simply, kikokushijo are viewed as resilient and cosmopolitan when it’s convenient for Japan’s image in the international community. But they’re often chastised for their cultural differences by many in Japanese society because they are expected to still “be Japanese”, as in to have a perfect grasp of Japanese culture. For example, their ability to “read the room” (空気を読む ‘Kuuki wo yomu’) is supposed to be innate, as ‘Nihonjiron’ (日本人論 “treatises on Japaneseness”) —the history, collective cultural identity and borderline stereotypical representations of Japan–suggests that Japanese culture is passed down through nature rather than nurture. In truth the ability to read the room is instead really hard to grasp for who doesn’t know such unspoken etiquette without being explicitly told. At school kikokushijo are often, at the same time, discriminated and privileged. It might have escaped you but All Might is, in a way, a returnee. Japanese by birth, he left for U.S.A. at 18 and studied abroad, coming back to Japan at 23. He occasionally can’t read the room, uses western words and Enji even refers to him as “American guy”…

…which is also an interesting pun as a less used meaning for ‘MERICAN’ is “fist” so he calls All Might at the same time “American guy” and “fist guy”.
Doylist commentary:
I guess I should make a premise here. I divided the narration of this meta in chronological parts so here I should look solely at the part that cover Enji after his graduation at U.A. until he comes up with his plan to get married.
However all those scenes in which details come up are flashbacks inserted in different contexts, contexts which is impossible to completely ignore in a Doylistic analysis so, for this part, you’ll hear me talking about what’s going on when the flashback is shown, so as to give it the context in which it’s meant to be read. Sorry if it’ll seem I’m jumping ahead of the story.
In the previous part I’ve mentioned of how Enji’s ‘origin’ story felt like an attempt to overwrite his previous ‘origin’ story… which would be this one. Enji graduated from U.A. and worked hard, so hard at 20 he was already Number 2 but, at the same time realized he couldn’t surpass All Might and so he lost it and decided to make a successor who could.
Now… in his prototype version, Enji wasn’t described as obsessed with strength and surpassing All Might (prototype Enji was obsessed with respecting law), that was added later, when Horikoshi started working on Shōto’s prototype (though in it Shōto was meant to hate his mother and wish for his father’s love), and was developed further with Chap. 31 so Chap. 95, at the time in which it was drawn, showing us Enji’s young self and how he came to feel he couldn’t surpass All Might, was likely meant to be the ‘origin’ story of Todoroki Enji, an ‘origin’ that, as you can see in the canon information part of this meta, is referenced plenty of times through the manga, enough to make us think it’s really important and Enji’s ‘origin’… before Horikoshi came up with the scene in Chap. 356 and claimed that was the ‘origin’.
Now, I’ll put aside my thought on that scene about which I already discussed, and focus solely on the ones mentioned above.
Chap. 95 takes what Shōto said in Chap. 31, confirms and expands it by filtering it through Enji’s personal feelings of misery, underlines his frustration as well as his envy as the reasons why Enji married Rei and made Shōto.
It was likely written in a time in which Enji was meant to work as a foil to Bakugō (whom the story depicts overhearing Shōto explaining his backstory to Midoriya), showing Bakugō (and the readers) where Bakugō’s negative feelings could lead him. The story often references the parallels between Bakugō and Enji until All Might himself will claim Enji and Bakugō are a lot alike and observing Enji will help Bakugō so this seems to imply the parallel was planned from the start (along with the parallel between Bakugō and Shōto, who’re both two successful results of mixing Quirks and being raised in an environment that, to put it mildly, follows old fashioned ways to raise children [which we’ll currently would define abusive] though Bakugō is born out of love and his mother’s tendency to smack him is nowhere near close to how Enji’s training is so bad it causes Shōto to throw up… never mentioning the both of them share ambition and rage… but that’s for another meta).
Still, what’s interesting is how Horikoshi kept on working on this bit of Enji’s story, representing fundamentally the same thing over and over, through Enji’s three sons’ eyes, through Hawks’ eyes, through Enji’s eyes, using even different visuals, sometimes it’s a rift, sometimes it’s a too tall mountain, the story is more or less always the same, albeit, as the story progresses, things start to change in how it’s presented.
In Chap. 31 & 93 Enji’s obsession with surpassing All Might isn’t presented in a positive light. There’s nothing good in it. It’s an obsession that ate him and that lead him to use and abuse his family, not something praiseworthy. In fact in Enji we can see a criticism of “Renjishi” and of the ‘Hoshi Ittetsu’s parenthood/training style’, not a praise on how he raised Shōto, and the feelings that moved him are clearly depicted as as negative.
This however was before All Might’s retirement and Enji becoming the new Number 1.
Chap. 165 and, especially, 188/189 in fact, start to paint a different picture.
With All Might’s retirement, being capable of reaching and surpassing All Might becomes no more just the wish of an envious person but a necessity, as the peace All Might built is slowly crumbling now that he isn’t around to protect it, and strength equal or bigger than All Might’s is needed to win the Nōmus.
I’ll clarify, the negative feelings moving Enji to wish to surpass All Might remain negative, but his wish to surpass All Might is no more painted as such. While previously the story seemed to say Enji should have contented himself to be second best, to accept All Might couldn’t be surpassed, now it remarks how All Might instead needed to be surpassed.
Maybe Horikoshi realized he couldn’t criticize Enji’s wish to surpass All Might… since the whole new generation of Heroes we’re supposed to root for and take as an example long to do so (which, by the way, kind of makes weird how before there was apparently no one seriously trying to do so).
So, when, again, in chap 188 Enji brings up the story of his wish to create a ‘stronger Hero’ by mixing his fire with Rei’s ice, he does it while facing the Nōmu, forcing a reader to see the need for a Hero who’s strong enough he could defeat the Nōmu… which well, is true, and, on the surface, it seems subtly aimed at ‘excusing’ Enji’s wish (even though actually when Enji came up with that idea such a threat didn’t exist and he was moved solely by envy).
Also Enji’s stubbornness and refusal to give up during the fight makes him the personification of ‘Seishin’ (精神 “Spirit/Persistence”), turning him and his stubbornness into a positive thing.
In the flashbacks we also have an increase in acknowledging the people Enji wronged.
Originally, when this story was first told (31-95), it seemed like the only ones who had been wronged were Shōto and Rei (Chap 39 showing Shōto’s siblings happily playing while Shōto is forced to train).
Now in Chap 188, Shōto’s siblings are also acknowledged as people who were hurt and dragged into the mix, likely because the story has decided to dig no more into just Shōto and his personal drama but in the whole Todoroki family, to conclude with Tōya making clear he was the first victim of Enji’s plan.
Now let’s me be clear.
Enji’s wish to surpass All Might can be both a good and a bad thing at the same time however, more than the story wanting to show us how things aren’t solely black or white, this shift seems to be here more for a shift in the goals of the narration.
Enji is not anymore meant to be solely a ‘cautionary tale against negative feelings’, a negative figure, but he becomes a character on the path of atonement, one for whom readers are supposed to cheer, and, as a result, the presentation changes to a more sympathetic one. At the same time, since the story is going to focus no more just on Shōto, but on the whole Todoroki family and on its drama, so his other children too are included in Enji’s thoughts.
Is this a retcon?
We can’t tell for sure.
It’s, of course, possible that in Chap. 31 & 93 Horikoshi hadn’t planned yet Enji’s atonement arc or a Todoroki family arc (actually in the first part of the story Rei and Shōto’s siblings only seem to be mob characters who exist in the story solely to give Shōto a tragic past) so when Horikoshi later decided to give the Todoroki family more relevance, he had to use Chap. 165 & 188 to adjust his aim… or he might have had it in mind already but not have wanted to introduce it yet.
Sure is in Chap. 93 the lack of Natsuo, Fuyumi and, especially, Tōya, the child who supposedly died due to Enji, something for which Enji is meant to feel very guilty for, might seem to point to a lack of planning, because it’s hard to excuse the fact Enji, in Chap. 93, doesn’t spare a thought to the child he lost due to his ambition with the Doylist reason that ‘Horikoshi wanted to keep Dabi’s past in the dark’. We didn’t have to see Tōya’s face after all, the other kids might have been shown in the distance or something like that, but present as it happens in Chap. 188.
There’s something else that seems to point out to a change in direction.
We’re told more than once and also by Enji himself how Enji gave up on surpassing All Might at 20, to push that duty on his son. Enji married to have a child that could surpass All Might and, ultimately, put that child through abusive training so as to force him to do so.
While forcing his son to take his mantle might have been a proof he couldn’t give up not even when he realized he couldn’t personally do it, 20 is an absurdly young age to give up on surpassing a man around 10 years his senior… especially if we consider Enji finished U.A. at 19, which means at 20 he has just started being a Pro Hero and can still improve and yet he immediately decided he couldn’t surpass All Might and rushed to marry a woman who could give him a son who could do it instead (in order for Tōya to be born when Enji is 22, this means he was conceived when Enji was 21, meaning the latest Enji married is when he was 21).
In this scenery Enji doesn’t look like a man who can represent ‘Seishin’, since he gave up and despaired way too early.
Horikoshi is probably aware of the problem, so he has Natsuo lampshade it, only for Fuyumi to counter that no, Enji isn’t one who would give up.
Hawks’ words confirm Fuyumi’s view because Hawks is younger than Tōya, and so he had to have observed Enji never give up surpassing All Might way after Enji had children (Hawks doesn’t know why Enji had children so he couldn’t have been speaking of that).
This seems to be Horikoshi’s attempt at telling us we, like Natsuo, actually don’t know which sort of man Enji is, we hadn’t observed him well and should just ‘look at him’ like he asked during the Japanese Hero Billboard Staff and, as an idea, it’s not bad but… after hearing Enji himself claim to himself he despaired, implying he had Shōto due to it, and have him say out loud he had Shōto for that purpose and entrusted everything to him to All Might (twice) and to Shōto himself…

…also driving Rei insane in the process… and then the story going back to this with a flashback to Tōya’s childhood before he started to burn himself, with Enji saying he entrusted everything to Tōya (same as he’ll later entrust everything to Shōto), the visual showing us Tōya walking on a bridge, easily crossing the rift between Enji and All Might as Enji says he believed Tōya would reach Enji’s goal…

…it becomes difficult to assume Enji didn’t give up on personally fulfilling his ambitions. The story has hit us on the head with how Enji gave up and passed such duty to a son he purposely had to surpass All Might too many times.
The fact that we just ‘don’t know him’ so we missed how he always personally tried to surpass All Might feels like a poor excuse when we were given over and over proof of him giving up, so yeah, the whole feels more like a retcon because the other option is… while the intention is good, the storytelling isn’t that great because the two things seem to stand in contrast instead than exist at the same time.
Said all this (okay, I could say more on this but somewhere one has to stop), the idea we don’t really know Enji and therefore we misjudged him is not bad, quite the contrary, same as the idea to present how some of his characteristics can have both negative and positive effects… but it’s just it’s so not foreshadowed it seems to come out of nowhere. I think it would have worked much better with more foreshadowing… and les pressure on the kids… because if Enji hadn’t lost hope to surpass All Might, his desperation is less than if he had no hopes, and makes even harder to excuse what he put his family through.
Credits when it’s due, Horikoshi will work more on this in other parts of the story dealing with Enji’s past, but we’ll discuss them when we’ll get there.
On another note… both the visuals of the rift between All Might and the other Heroes, his back too large for Enji to compete, and the one of All Might being a mountain that’s too tall for Enji to climb, are very good. The rift will come back with Tōya, Enji assuming his son will be cross it back with ease… but the mountain, in addition to all the whole symbolism about it being sacred, can be seen also as a subtle reference to Sekoto Peak, where Enji used to train when he was younger and where Tōya will die.
It’s also worth to mention that, part of the problems with All Might are likely rooted in how Horikoshi decided to make All Might a returnee, opposed to Enji who’s more of a ‘traditional Japanese person’. I won’t dig into this too much but their contrast feels like symbolic of something that’s almost nation-wide, Enji representing old Japan, while All Might representing the Japan that gets exposed to foreign influences. I’m not 100% sure how things are going with it now, but in Meiji era the ‘modernization’ was equated with replacing Japanese mentality with western one, which was greatly praised (and, ironically, eugenic ideas about how Japanese people should marry foreigners to improve their own race were spread around by Japanese themselves). Then Japan will have a period of trying to return back to his own values and nationalism and then all this will lead to WW2 and to the nuking of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (Tōya’s attempt to nuke Japan anyone?).
While I’m not sure Horikoshi deliberately planned to have BNHA as an allegory of all this, this story is part of Japanese people so references could have subconsciously slipped in the story… or maybe I’m just reading too much into it. Just food for thoughts.
Watsonian commentary:
We get to the next step of Enji’s life, the crushing moment in which he realized that putting all the effort in the world wouldn’t make him a Hero like All Might.
It actually comes way too soon as, by 19 Enji finishes U.A. high, by 20 he’s already the Number 2 Hero and yet, that impressive jump only make him realize he can’t surpass All Might and become Number 1.
Now… the whole thing is a little complicate as we don’t exactly know how things were back then with the Japanese Hero Billboard chart but let’s assume they weren’t much different from when Enji actually managed to become Number 1.
So, the Japanese Hero Billboard chart assigns points for incident resolution rate, societal contributions and public approval rating. Enji’s strongest point is his incident resolution rate as from as early as Chap. 3, he’s the man who owns the record for it, surpassing even All Might.
Enji’s weakest point is, instead, his public approval rating.
When he’ll become Number 1 it’s said if the ranking had gone merely for approval rating he would have been forth, and he would have been clearly fifth if All Might had been still around.
To give you an idea of how not so popular Enji is, the side material says Enji is first place in the “Heroes who look like Villains” ranking, and this without even being victim of discrimination as he’s not a Heteromorph.
Enji’s toy dolls don’t sell well and remain unsold and discounted due to him not being liked by the young audience, which will allow Hawks’ mother to buy him one. His temperament is judged too violent and not as reassuring as All Might. He doesn’t do fan service and has a gaze filled with anger that keeps people away.
So no matter how hard Enji works, how many people he saves, how big are the cases he resolves, he’s not liked enough DUE TO HIS OWN BEHAVIOUR. Enji however claims that:

I take he means he didn’t want to become Number 1 due to his approval rating rising due to him being liked for himself as a person, but due to him being admired for how much of a strong Hero he was, as he associates strength with the ability to overcome his weakness, indecisiveness.
At the same time, since his behavior is partly a façade to hide his own weakness, in a way he also likely felt he couldn’t try to act social and laughing around, or the façade under which he was hiding would crumble and people would see him for who he really is, weak and indecisive.
He’s kind of trapped in this vicious circle.
We see how extremely awkward he is when, after All Might’s retirement, he tries being more social.
Interesting enough this might mean his own is not a problem of being ranked Number 1 or Number 2, but just of viewing himself weaker than All Might. This can mean to him the problem isn’t the ranking system, which views him as Number 2, but the fact he always views himself inferior to All Might in terms of strength, and that he blames his lack of strength as the reason why he perceives himself as indecisive, he thinks the ranking confirms his idea and spend his whole life fighting all this.
In less convoluted words, we can say what Enji is lacking confidence in himself and perceives himself as inferior to All Might and thinks he’ll stop viewing himself as such if he were capable to surpass him in strength and him surpassing All Might in the Hero ranking with his strength only would be proof of this.
Low self-esteem often stems from childhood experiences, social pressures, or traumatic experiences. We don’t have information about Enji’s childhood beyond the fact he lost his father in such way, so it was probably that trauma what shaped his own view of himself… and it’s that trauma (and not All Might) what he should overcome in order to start feeling better.
Instead than focusing on overcoming his trauma, Enji focuses on what he thinks would help him erase his weakness, which he blames for getting such trauma in the first place. He doesn’t just want a title, he needs to be the strongest so that his strength wouldn’t make him be indecisive anymore, so that he could delude himself he’s a superman too, so that he could stop feeling inferior and envious, so that he could stop blaming himself for what happened to his father as those feelings plague his life and force him to put a mask to hide them. And yet, no matter how much effort he put, he can’t surpass All Might and so he always feels plagued by his negative feelings.
Technically, as the problem is psychological, not practical, even if he were to surpass All Might in terms of strength, he wouldn’t solve things, he would still not feel a superhuman.
The story will prove this, things for him won’t get better when All Might becomes weaker than him.
Enji is his own worst enemy and, since he’s desperate, he also takes what is considered an acceptable route in Japan, have a child and push his own burden on his own child… through, apparently this alone won’t be enough to make him stop trying on his own.
Now, in regards to Enji entrusting everything to Shōto (and, before him, attempting to entrust his ambitions to Tōya), it’s relevant to point out that in Japan, “filial piety” (親孝行 ‘Oyakoko’) is an important Buddhist virtue that requires the children ‘to be good’ to their parents and they’re supposed to manifest this in many forms, among which to fulfill their parents’ wishes and aspirations, and one common way to do this is continuing their parents’ job. Sure, nowadays things are changing, children are often not expected to take upon themselves to be forced to continue the family business (think to Chap. 182 and to Jirō Kyōka who cried felt she owned an apology to her parents for not wanting to become a musician… but they were cool with her pursuing the path she wanted)… but the point is that Enji’s expectations one of his kids would fulfill his aspirations by becoming a stronger Hero and surpassing All Might isn’t something Enji pulled out of nowhere or merely out of a selfish wish, it’s based on traditional values, and social expectations that existed already, which is also why All Might never reacts negatively when Enji tells him, in both Chap. 31 and Chap. 165 he had Shōto for the purpose of surpassing All Might.

Well here it is. Really solid record this time around, particularly with the track Shuumaku no MiaLuca. Would really be one of their better songs but I don’t quite agree with the scream of intense pain they left in, it’s quite dramatical for sure but still jarring on subsequent listens, much like Yuzuki Risa’s “ne?” on her song, for some reason it just doesn’t sit well with me.
Also gotta admire the naming sense on these tracks, aside from Dear they all have such badass names lmao. The cover art is golden, the back art of the album is diamonds, overall just really good stuff. Feel like they really captured the sheer hatred and resolve of the main character and also the love she holds for her cat. Still feels like there’s not enough story to really justify a two-parter, but given the fact the music is solid on it’s own it doesn’t really matter. I for one ended up listening to the previous album way more than I originally expected.
Anyway, my work pc imploded or something and I rarely if ever feel like tling on my phone so expect even less from me in the near future. Lyrics down below the cut and see you all next time.
