"Every year, over 350,000 women die from cervical cancer and another 660,000 are diagnosed. [Note: Plus trans men and other trans people with a cervix.] As a consequence, children are orphaned, families impoverished and communities diminished by the loss of mothers, wives, daughters and sisters.
And yet, unlike most other cancers, almost all these cases and deaths can be averted. We have powerful vaccines that can prevent infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV) that causes cervical cancer; we have diagnostics to detect it early; and we have treatments for those it strikes. With these tools, cervical cancer can not only be stopped; it could become the first cancer to be eliminated. Some high-income countries are already close to elimination, meaning fewer than four cases per 100,000 women.
But in many low- and middle-income countries, these tools are still not available, which is why 94% of cervical cancer deaths occur in those countries.
In 2018, WHO launched a global call to action to eliminate cervical cancer, which was followed in 2020 by the adoption by all 194 WHO Member States of a Global Strategy to Accelerate the Elimination of Cervical Cancer as a Public Health Problem. The strategy calls for countries to achieve three targets by 2030: 90% of girls fully immunised against HPV; 70% of women receiving timely screening; and 90% of those found with precancer or cancer accessing treatment.
These targets are not just aspirational, they are achievable, even in low- and middle-income countries.  Bhutan has already reached the targets, the first to do so in the South-East Asia region.
Since introducing the HPV vaccine in 2011, Rwanda has reached vaccine coverage of 90%, and today announced its national goal to reach the 90-70-90 targets three years ahead of schedule, by 2027. Already, in two districts – Gicumbi and Karongi – Rwanda is meeting those goals. Nigeria, which introduced the HPV vaccine in October last year [2023], has already vaccinated 12.3 million girls.
We have the tools and the opportunity to eliminate cervical cancer.
Since WHO issued the global call to action in 2018, more than 60 countries have introduced the HPV vaccine into their immunisation programmes, bringing the total to 144 countries that are routinely protecting girls from cervical cancer in later life. With scientific advances, we can now prevent cervical cancer with just a single dose, which 60 countries are now doing.
The largest provider of HPV vaccines to low- and middle-income countries is Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, which plans to vaccinate 120 million children between now and 2030. But this plan requires that investments in health are sustained. We are also counting on manufacturers to confirm and honour their commitments to provide HPV vaccines to low- and middle-income countries in the coming years, to avoid the supply constraints that held back progress in the past.
But we cannot rely on vaccines alone. The impact of the rapid scale-up in vaccinating girls now will not be seen for decades, when they reach the adult years when cervical cancer typically appears. To save lives now, we must match the increase  in vaccination with increases in screening and treatment.
Decades ago, as more women gained access to pap smears in developed countries, the mortality associated with cervical cancer dropped rapidly. Today, even better tests are available. Over 60 countries now include high-performance HPV tests as part of their screening programs. Women can even collect their own samples for HPV testing, removing more barriers to life-saving services. In Australia – which is on track to become one of the first countries in the world to achieve elimination – more than a quarter of all screening tests are now done this way...
Several countries are also investigating the use of artificial intelligence to enhance the accuracy of screening in resource-limited settings. When women are found with precancerous lesions, many are now treated with portable battery-powered devices, which can be operated in remote locations."

The most extraordinary reconciliations are taking place across Rwanda. Thirty years after the genocide, unthinkable partnerships have formed between unlikely pairs: murderers and survivors; parents and children whose families were torn apart by mass murder. They have been hard won. “After the genocide, people came to apologise,” says 70-year-old Liberatha from the Karongi district in Rwanda, where nine out of 10 Tutsis were murdered, including her family. “I said, ‘I will never forgive you.’ I never expected to exchange a word with those people again.” Yet now, after going through a process of community-based sociotherapy, she feels “a hint of joy”. Every genocide eventually comes to an end. The survivors bear their scars and bury their dead. The murderers, looters and rapists either face consequences for their actions or get away with them. And people have no choice but to try living side by side again. How do you do that when mutual distrust smoulders? It is a painfully slow and challenging, yet inspiring process. In no country in the history of humanity have so many deaths occurred in such a short time. More than half a million people in 100 days, mostly Tutsis, but also Hutus mistaken for, or protecting, Tutsis. Most victims did not perish due to military violence, but by machetes and clubs studded with nails. It wasn’t strangers who killed or mutilated, but neighbours and acquaintances. Perpetrators and victims spoke the same language and shared the same Christian religion and culture.

Summary
Rwanda Meteorology Agency released a weather forecast for May, indicating above-average rainfall across the country.
Rwanda has launched a search and rescue operation to locate victims of the floods.
Floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains have cost Rwanda over 600 lives since 2018.

After floods and landslides devastated districts in the north, west, and southern region of Rwanda on the night of May 2, the death toll rose to 130 by Thursday morning, according to the government's Deputy Spokesperson Allain Mukuralinda.
In addition, 77 individuals were injured, with 36 receiving treatment in local hospitals and five people are still missing. The district of Rubavu was hit the hardest, with over 1,000 homes destroyed due to ongoing rainfall.
Rescue teams are still working to recover bodies that are trapped in landslides and collapsed houses.

In response to this crisis, various authorities, military forces, religious organisations and humanitarian groups have initiated interventions since Wednesday.
Affected individuals have been provided with essential items such as tents, blankets, food, and basic household utensils. Some people have also been accommodated in safe zones such as churches and schools. Advertisement
According to a statement by the office of Rwandan president, rescue interventions including relocating residents from affected areas to safer zones have been carried out. Affected districts also increased from four to nine: Nyabihu, Rubavu, Karongi, Rutsiro, Gakenke, Burera, Musanze Ngororero, and Nyamagabe in the northern, western, and southern provinces.
It started raining on Tuesday around 11 pm and by Wednesday morning, over 50 people were declared dead. Among the victims is a family of five that was all killed in the disaster.
“My deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims of the landslides and floods that occurred last night in the Western, Northern, and Southern Provinces. We are doing everything within our means to address this difficult situation. I am personally following up on the response closely,” President Kagame took to Twitter to console survivors.
Rwanda normally experiences heavy rains and hailstorms between January and April, which often result in the loss of lives especially those living in high-risk zones.

In Kigali, 27,000 families still reside in high-risk zones where disaster always looms when it rains.
The deaths from the latest floods bring the toll to 197 lives lost since January, according to Rwanda’s Ministry of Emergency Management.
Search and rescue operations
Rwandan authorities have launched a search and rescue operation to locate victims of the floods and assist those affected by the disaster. Emergency facilities have been set up to help those who have lost their homes. Funeral preparations for those who died are underway.
Rwanda’s Minister of Emergency Management Marie Solange Kayisire on Wednesday morning said that the latest floods were because of the rains that soaked mountains and that victims were not only families living in high-risk zones given the mountainous nature of the region.
At least 408 disaster cases were recorded in this period. These include 107 windstorm cases, 66 rainstorms, three mine disasters, 77 lightning cases, seven landslides, 13 house collapses, eight hailstorms, 29 floods as well as 98 fires.

The Rwanda Meteorology Agency released a weather forecast for May, indicating above-average rainfall ranging between 50mm and 200mm across the country.
The forecast stated that the first 10 days of May 2023 would have a higher amount of rainfall in many parts of the northwestern region ranging between 175mm and 200mm. Four districts of Ngororero, Rubavu, Nyabihu, Rutsiro and Karongi were affected by the heavy rains on the night of May 2.
According to the weather forecast, Rulindo, Gakenke and Gicumbi districts are also likely to see similar amounts of heavy rains in the next few days.
On Wednesday morning, the main road from Kigali, crossing through Rulindo, Gakenke, Musanze and Nyabihu districts to Rubavu, was closed due to landslides.

Floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains have cost Rwanda over 600 lives since 2018. Approximately 30,600 houses and over 35,940ha of crops have been destroyed, according to data from the Ministry in charge of Emergency Management.
In neighbouring Uganda near the border with Rwanda, six people died overnight into Wednesday in an area in the southwestern Kisoro district, after heavy rains pounded the mountainous region, according to the Uganda Red Cross.
Five of the dead are from one family, and emergency workers have begun excavations to retrieve the bodies, the Red Cross said in a statement.
Uganda has also been experiencing heavy and sustained rains since late March and in recent days’ landslides have been reported in other elevated areas, like Kasese near the Rwenzori mountains, where deluges and floods destroyed homes and displaced hundreds.

Automatic Auger Type Powder Filling Machine in Rwanda
Tumblr media
Company Overview: Laxmi Pharma Equipment is a Manufacturer, Supplier, and Exporter of Automatic Auger Type Powder Filling Machine in Rwanda. Our Manufacturer Unit is in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. An Automatic Auger Type Powder Filling Machine is industrial equipment that automatically fills powder-based products into containers. It uses a rotating auger (a type of screw conveyor) to measure and dispense the powder into the packaging container. The machine automates the operation, reducing manual labor while improving the consistency and efficiency of the filling process. The auger mechanism ensures accurate dosing of the powder, even for fine and free-flowing substances. You can program the machine for different fill weights, providing high versatility for various product types and packaging needs. How Does an Automatic Auger Type Powder Filling Machine Work? Powder Feeding: The machine places powder into a hopper, which serves as a storage area for the product. Auger Mechanism: A rotating auger screw transfers powder from the hopper to the dispensing nozzle, controlling the dispensed volume. Weight Measurement: A weight sensor or volumetric system ensures precise measurements, calibrated for different products. Filling Process: The machine dispenses powder into containers and stops automatically when it achieves the required weight or volume. Sealing: Filled containers move to the sealing station for lid application or pouch sealing, based on packaging type. Types of Auger Filling Machines: Single Head Auger Filling Machines: Ideal for small-scale production, filling one container at a time. Multi-Head Auger Filling Machines: Equipped with multiple heads to fill several containers simultaneously, increasing productivity for large-scale operations. Inline Auger Filling Machines: Designed for high-speed processes, handling larger powder volumes, perfect for mass production. What types of powders can be filled using an automatic auger filling machine? The automatic auger filling machine handles a wide range of powders, including fine powders, granular powders, and even coarse powders. This includes products like spices, flour, chemicals, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. How do I adjust the filling volume on an auger filling machine? You can adjust the filling volume by modifying the auger rotation speed or changing the size of the auger screw. The machine’s control panel allows for easy adjustments to ensure accurate fills based on the product’s characteristics. Laxmi Pharma Equipment is a leading Manufacturer, Supplier, and Exporter of Automatic Auger Type Powder Filling Machine in Rwanda Including Bugesera, Burera, Gakenke, Gasabo, Gatsibo, Gicumbi, Gisagara, Huye, Kamonyi, Karongi, Kayonza, Kicukiro, Kirehe, Muhanga, Musanze, Ngoma, Ngororero, Nyabihu, Nyagatare, Nyamagabe, Nyamasheke, Nyanza, Nyarugenge, Nyaruguru, Rubavu, Ruhango, Rulindo, Rusizi, Rutsiro, Rwamagana, Kigali, Gisenyi, Butare, Gitarama, Ruhengeri, Byumba, Cyangugu, Kibuye, Rwamagana, Kibungo, Kirambo, Kagano.
