Hunger
After a long day of travel the exhausted group made camp to rest for the night. After unrolling their sleeping bag Tav decided to converse with their companions, unwinding with those they were growing to trust. Gale dug through their supplies for ingredients, seeming indecisive about what meal they’d have this night. Astarion lounged on a pile of pillows, propped up midway while thumbing through one of the books he pilfered on their journey. Laezel was content to settle on her knees nearby, quiet and uninterested in socializing. Everyone was in their place, all except their newest member. Tav spun in a slow circle to search but he couldn’t find the drider. They noticed Wyll near to the fire warming his hands, approaching him for inquiry.
“Wyll, have you seen Kar’niss? I’m certain he was right behind us,” Tav said.
“No, not since we put down our tents. I did notice he was looking a little gray around the eyes while we traveled today. I assumed he was just tired.”
“Now that you mention it,” Astarion interjected, “he wasn’t nearly as chatty as before. The break from his droning mantra was a welcomed change.”
Tav side-eyed Astarion and shook their head. “I’ll go look for him. He might be injured but didn’t wish to announce it.”
“Or maybe he’s decided to run off to find Majesty himself. He doesn’t strike me as the patient sort,” Shadowheart added.
Gale lifted a finger and waggled it in her direction. “Maybe so, but Tav sees something in him. Like it or not he’s part of our merry band now. Best to exhaust every option before assuming the worst.”
“Thank you Gale,” Tav said. “I won’t be gone long.”
Karlach held up her axe, the flicker of flames lapping at the handle. “If you’re not back in an hour, I’ll come looking, soldier.”
Tav smiled and nodded. “I’ve no doubt about that.”
Once the groups fears had been assuaged Tav wandered toward the direction Wyll pointed them to. This led away from camp and into a wooded area. They noticed broken twigs and bushes displaced likely due to a large creature moving through them. They ventured forth, the thick underbrush tugging at their clothing, strong scents of pine and moss tickling at their nostrils. It was dark, much of the moonlight obscured by the thick canopy above but Tav pressed on, lighting a torch to help cut through the pitch.
“Kar’niss?” They called, their voice echoing in the immediate area.
Several steps in they heard a distinct rustling above them, a few rogue leaves floating down from the trees branches around them. They tried to see what caused the disturbance, the wind or something more? In doing so they didn’t see the sticky trap they were backing into, their body hitting a wall of web that stretched between two thick tree trunks. This startled them, spinning around to struggle against the adhesive silk which snagged onto their clothes and hair with a vice grip.
“Hnn!”
Tav dropped their torch, the flame extinguishing once it touched the wet mud beneath their feet. They pushed and pulled but just as they yanked one arm free the other seemed to become more entangled as a result. Panic start to set in, Tav finding themselves close to calling out for those back at camp. Their cries were stifled by movement above them, darting their eyes to search for the source. From above, nine reflective spheres peered back at them, glowing in the dim moonlight that managed to filter through the branches. Tav stopped fighting with the webbing, their expression twisting into a confused scowl.
“Kar’niss?”
An annoyed hiss sounded off above them. “True Soul has ruined our trap.”
Tav breathed a sigh of relief. “Gods, that scared the shit out of me.” They frowned and looked at their arms, tacky and thoroughly wrapped in web. “How...how do I get out of this?”
Kar’niss carefully balanced over the branch which barely supported his weight. “They must stop struggling. The more they do the tighter the bondage. Back away, slowly, until the web becomes taut and snaps under pressure.” He’d instruct, his voice relaying the irritation at losing all of that hard work.
Tav did as told, walking backwards and dragging the thick strands with them. They pulled until the web couldn’t sustain itself, the beautiful entanglement ripped down the middle and freed it’s hostage. They exhaled, their heart beating so hard they could hear it in their ears. They’d start the process of peeling excess from their arms and clothing, admiring the leftovers as best as they could in the limited light.
“I’m sorry, Kar’niss. I didn’t mean to ruin anything. We didn’t know where you went so I left to search. I...was worried.”
The statement made Kar’niss shuffle in place, his head cocked to the side, perplexed. “Worried? We are not weak, we can handle ourselves.”
Tav winced. “Yes of course.” Once they cleaned themselves off they glanced up at him. “What are you doing out here, anyway? Wyll said you looked gray around the eyes. Are you ill?”
“Tch, no. I am hungry. I have not eaten in days, can’t wait any longer. We smelled wild game, one will wander into my web...once I rebuild it,” he grumbled.
Tav bit their lower lip. “We...have food in the camp. You’re welcome to share it with us, we don’t mind.”
“What food you have available we cannot eat. Unless you wish to offer the cleric, the fighter or the warlock for us to feast on. They are the only three that do not smell of foul blood.”
They furrowed their brows. “Blood…?” A pause. “Oh, OH! You can only consume blood?”
Kar’niss snorted and backed up against the bulk of the tree. “It is the only thing that sustains us. We prefer it fresh. If that is all, you may go. You’re scaring off the game.”
Tav frowned and nodded. “Alright. Once again, I’m sorry.”
They leaned down and palmed over the ground until they found their torch. Tav began to turn to depart, able to hear Kar’niss shuffling above to start the process of fixing the mess. They stopped mid-step, a thought dawning on them. They whirled back around and fixed their eyes on the drider’s silhouette above them.
“I have a question,” Tav said.
Kar’niss scoffed. “What is it now?”
They took a step closer. “You mentioned feeding on others at camp. What about...me?”
The question nearly caused him to lose his footing, his reflective gaze darting to Tav in surprise. “What?”
“Well, I ruined your trap and I feel awful about it. I’m sure it’ll take you a while to fix it, even longer to get a catch. So long as you promise not to drain me dry, that I’ll walk away from this, I don’t see why I can’t give you something.”
Kar’niss’ legs clicked against the surface of the branch, shifting his large body to get a better angle to look at Tav. A silence fell over the area only broken by the mild rustling of foliage from a gentle rolling breeze. He was thinking it over which was a good sign to Tav at least.
“We can...do this. Take only what we need to hold us over for something more...filling.”
Tav swallowed thickly, starting to second guess their offer. They had never been a meal for a drider before and didn’t know what to expect. At the same time they didn’t want him to starve. It was only a temporary arrangement, right?
“Will it hurt?”
“A little but it will pass quickly,” Kar’niss said.
Tav inhaled a deep lungful of air, mustering up the courage to give the order. Kar’niss was intimidating on his own but more so partially concealed by the shadows as he was.
“Alright, do it.”
Kar’niss didn’t need further convincing. His hind legs lifted to stimulate the spinnerets in the barb of his backside, producing a thick line of silk which he secured to the branch he perched upon. Attached to the line of web he began to descend from the tree toward his chosen snack standing below. Tav watched his approach, more of his features becoming defined the closer he came. Soon he hovered mere inches above the nervous individual, making intense eye contact with one another. Tav struggled to control their breathing, their heart racing with such fervor they feared it might burst like a bubble. Kar’niss reached out and hooked their arms under Tav’s armpits, winding them around their upper back. His pedipalps snapped around their waist and curled against their buttocks, enveloping Tav’s torso with the differing pair of limbs.
Tav suddenly felt the earth removed from their feet, Kar’niss’ hind legs pulling at the rope of silk, rising back into the safety of the canopy. Tav gasped from the sudden change in altitude, their arms wrapping around his neck out of instinct. This pressed their bodies together intimately so, Tav rarely allowed to be this close to the drider and finding they didn’t mind it. Once they reached a height that was acceptable to him he settled four of his legs against the side of the tree for stability, remaining suspended from the silken lifeline still attached to his spinnerets. This left Tav’s legs to dangle freely toward the ground below, a strange sensation but with the way Kar’niss held them they felt very secure. Almost too secure. Kar’niss had a grip on Tav and didn’t appear inclined to give it up. If they had reservations it may have been too late to voice them.
Kar’niss tugged Tav closer and craned his head to get a better angle on their neck, his prize. Tav’s lips trembled as his mouth inched closer, able to feel the caress of his warm breath cascading over the surface. Goosebumps spread the length of their arms, a gentle tremor creeping down their spine while the anticipation rose.
“Hold still,” Kar’niss whispered.
Before Tav could reply they felt his lips seal around the thickest portion of their neck. Razor sharp fangs sank into the tender flesh creating two smooth puncture wounds. The burning sting surged throughout their throat causing their eyes to water in response. A choked gurgle bubbled in their esophagus silenced only when they swallowed. Just as Kar’niss promised the throbbing ache of his intrusion began to wane, fading into a dull prickling sensation around the affected area. Tav curled their fingers into the meat of his lower shoulders to hang on for dear life, putting their trust into him keeping his word.
Kar’niss withdrew his fangs but kept his lips sealed around the area forming a vacuum, his nostrils flaring the moment Tav’s sanguine essence coated his greedy tongue. Vampire bites were hungered and frantic, seeking to drain their hosts as quickly as their heartbeat would allow. This was different, very much so. Kar’niss didn’t seem to be in a hurry, allowing the blood to flow naturally rather than sucking the area with any urgency. It took Tav a moment to realize, Kar’niss was savoring them.
His arms tightened around his ‘prey’, pointed digits mingling with the fabric of their clothes to get a better grip. He nursed at the open wound, his tongue occasionally darting out to lap over the surface for a stronger taste. Such a sensation made a blush blossom on Tav’s face, their breath hitched. They weren’t sure if it was from the blood loss or a new found curiosity, but they did experience the faintest tingle of arousal collecting around their groin. The softest sigh of pleasure escaped their mouth, a warmth rising on their skin that spread throughout their entire body.
After several moments passed Tav began to feel a tinge of dizziness creep into their head, the grip around his neck growing lax once weakness kicked in. Kar’niss sensed their exhaustion which prompted him to slide his lips free. He’d lick over the puncture marks to encourage their closure, sparing Tav from further loss.
“That is enough,” Kar’niss murmured.
Tav was dazed and a bit sore. Despite the blood drain they still had control of most of their faculties. They didn’t know how much time had passed but they could at least conclude it was no more than an hour. Otherwise they’d have a flaming tiefling bursting through the brush to make one hell of a scene. Tav panted quietly, reaching to feel over the area of their neck that had been willfully assaulted. They could feel the fang marks in the skin which were steadily healing over.
“Mmmf...do you f-feel better, Kar’niss?” Tav asked, their tone weary.
“Yes. This will sustain us for the moment. I can put you down now.”
“N-No. I want to stay with you, just a little while longer,” Tav said.
Kar’niss lofted a single brow, his eyelids falling half mast as if to mull it over. Tav did just put their trust into him for a risky endeavor, who was he to argue? “Very well.”
He inched his way up into the tree with Tav in tow, his legs hooking onto a thick branch to hoist the pair up. He lowered himself down into a seated position, his belly flush with the wood below. He adjusted Tav to cradle them, one arm under their knees and the other supporting their back. Tav felt the weight of exhaustion hanging heavy, their body curled into Kar’niss’ chest with rest in mind. The drider glanced down at his unexpected companion, his tongue tip grazing over the front of his teeth, collecting Tav’s taste still fresh upon them. He’d look at the half full moon partially exposed through the canopy.
“Thank you,” he said in a pensive tone.
Tav’s lips twitched into a worn but pleased smile, allowing their gaze to join Kar’niss in admiring the moonlight. There they remained in blissful silence, reflecting upon the moment shared between them.

BG3 Drow Lore 🕷️ Kar'niss' Past - Eilistraean Theory
We can probably assume that Kar'niss was born a szarkai (albino drow), but the game gives us next to no information about his background. We know that after being turned into a drider, he was "cast out", "erased" and "forgotten" - the reason of this punishment remains a mystery though, as well as his past from before change.
This is probably going to be a really, really long shot, even for a fan theory, but hear me out:
Perhaps there might be something in Kar'niss' past that connected him to the cult of Eilistraee?
🕷️ Spider's Lyre - Kar'niss can be called by the lyre music and does not appreciate butchering the tune. In such scenario, he even makes a snide comment, calling Tav a "torturer of lyres".
Maybe Kar'niss holds this instrument in such a high regard simply because he sees it as "his mistress' lyre", provided by the Absolute - or rather, by one of her servants - to summon him.
But maybe he cares so much also because the lyre - or music in general - reminds him on some level of his previous life and of his previous self...?
🌕 Eilistraee's followers are encouraged to nurture music and song, the goddess' favoured arts, and her priests are pretty much obliged to have some decent music skills . Eilistraee is also known to use "a silvery radiance, sometimes accompanied by a wordless snatch of song or a few echoing harp notes" as her iconic manifestation.
Also, Eilistraee sometimes manifests as a sweet, soothing, otherworldly beautiful tune to call to the drow - through this music, she tempts them to follow her ideals and seek a different, better life for themselves, away from the clutches of Lolth.
🕷️ Blessing of Light - Kar'niss speaks about "the light" he carries with great reverence, claiming that this is his goddess' benevolent blessing... even though everybody around him - even random goblin cultist - know that this is no real blessing. He was merely given a magic lantern.
Maybe Kar'niss' attitude reflects simply his fanaticism, his desire to be recognized and respected as the Absolute's favoured. A large part of his faith - his very identity, even ("Light of the Absolute") - is woven around the concept of this "blessing".
But maybe the light that offers protection and comfort in the darkness reminds him also of some real blessing of some other goddess...?
🌕 "Eilistraee has also been known to aid her worshipers by providing a faint silvery radiance when they need to find something dropped in darkness, or follow an unknown trail by night through dark woods..."
Eilistraee can also bestow upon her followers moonfire that "...can range from a faint glow to a clear, bright (but not blinding) light". Moonfire can have blue-white, soft green, white or silver colour and can serve as a source of light for "finding one's way, and attracting others to a desired location."
Moonfire can also serve as a rare, visible blessing or sign of Eilistraee's support, and can be manifested even by "beings without any priest powers who work to further Eilistraee's aims".
🕷️ Heart's Desire - from what we see in game, the Absolute doesn't warp her servants' personalities to the point of making them unrecognizable. Rather, she seems to be playing on their desires and ambitions, making them believe that she is everything they could ever wanted.
In case of Kar'niss, the Absolute clearly plays on his desire to belong and to be recognized as a worthy servant of his goddess.
It is logical to assume that before he was turned into a drider, he worshipped Lolth - but at some point, she labeled him unworthy, rejected him and punished. Who knows, maybe he refers to the Absolute as "his queen" not only because he sees it fitting, but because it is an echo of the most known title of Lolth: Queen of Spiders.
🌕 But what if the Absolute plays on Kar'niss' former devotion to another goddess?
🔹 Maybe he responds to the lyre music because in the past, a similar kind of music called to him.
🔹 Maybe he treasures the lantern's light in a spiritual sense because in the past, he experienced a similar "blessing of light" - a visible sign of his goddess' favour and protection, a guiding light in the darkness.
🔹 Maybe he was tasked with guiding the Absolute's followers because in the past, he was guiding followers of some other goddess through a different kind of darkness - protecting Eilistraeans when they were pilgrimaging from the Underdark to the surface, as was their custom.
🔹 Maybe one day... something went wrong? Maybe after whatever happened, he could no longer see himself as a worthy follower - and on the top of that, his Lolth-sworn kin found out that he turned to another goddes? Maybe that was the reason why Lolth changed him into a drider?
I know: many, many 'maybes', little evidence, few leads - but... Imagine the kind of backstory the Eilistraean accent could give Kar'niss - and the absolutely epic redemption arc that could follow it later 🥺
"If the DM allows it, a drider dedicated to Eilistraee (..) might even aspire to throw off its curse through the divine intervention of the Dark Maiden, perhaps by completing a great quest." (The Ecology of the Drider)

So I have this Halsin fanfic idea which also involves Kar’niss
Basically, when Halsin is locked in the cell at the goblin camp there’s already someone there, a female drow who’s obviously hurt and scared and they put him there to mess with her (cause they don’t know he’s not really a bear) but of course he just protects her instead and when Tav and co comes and rescues him he takes her back to the Grove with him and when he follows Tav to the Shadow Cursed land she comes with him cause they’re practically inseparable now.
But when she sees Kar’niss she’s horrified because she knew him as a drow, he saved her life and helped her escape her house and the Spider Queen and that’s why she turned him into a drider and so OC is super duper sad and she asks Tav if the prism can protect Kar’niss too and Tav forces the guardian to free him from the Absolute and so Kar’niss helps them infiltrate Moonrise and basically it’s a Halsin x OC x Kar’niss fic that I’ll never be able to write to my satisfaction but if someone is feeling it please let me know…

Anatomical Research (pt. 1)
Pairing: Limeleech/Kar'niss
Warnings: NSFW, Kar'niss being his usual self-loathing self, canon-compliant drider anatomy, descriptions of spider anatomy (no, really, if you're not into non-human anatomy you may want to sit this one out), kind of a medical kink if you squint (more of a scientist kink tbh), unintentional edging
Summary:
Kar'niss finds himself a temporary resident of the Society of Brilliance lodge. The resident drow acarologist has questions about his anatomy.

Finally started writing it.
I finally did it. I'm overcoming my writer's block, and starting to bang out that fic I've been sitting on for ages. This is the beginning of 'Arachnophilia', the love story of Kar'niss and Tam'lin, and Tam'lin's friendships in Faerun. Things that have and are shaping him as his story progresses.

Midnight Snack
In the late hours of the evening Tav found themselves hungry. Moonrise was uncharacteristically quiet and still, many of its denizens out on patrol or assigned to various parts of the withered city. Tav enjoyed these rare moments of solace and solitude especially considering how often they were under scrutiny by the dark residents. They wandered into the kitchen, an area that was in various states of cleanliness. Pots and pans were scattered about haphazardly and a slightly musty aroma lingered in the air likely from the build-up of dust and rot. Despite this Tav wasn’t willing to sacrifice a proper meal regardless of their surroundings.
They got to work gathering what pans and utensils they could scavenge which still held promise, dumping them into a wash basin to give a good scrub down. While elbow deep in the soapy water their ears pricked when they heard a familiar clicking nearby. However, it wasn’t at ground level. Rather it was along the walls within the room, shifting as it seemed to come closer. Tav knew that sound, growing accustomed to it in their short time in Moonrise. Carefully they let their gaze drift to their peripheral managing to catch a fleeting glance of a certain drider looming nearby, moon lantern suspiciously absent. Kar’niss had likely heard the commotion and opted to come investigate, perched on one of the walls close to the ceiling. Unfortunately, he was too large to walk upside down but he did take advantage of the darker corners to keep himself moderately concealed. Tav pretended not to notice resuming the task at hand but kept an ear out all the same.
Eventually they finished cleaning and wandered over to the wood stove, tossing in a few logs and lighting it with a fire cantrip. A fire roared into life with such fervor that Kar’niss backed away and smushed himself tighter into the corner, quietly hissing to himself. Tav said nothing as they dusted off their hands. They knelt down next to their travelers pack digging through the contents until they found the ingredients they were after. Much of the available food in this area was rotten or less than ideal, long past its expiration date. It made Tav thankful that they had extra supplies from their journey through the mountain pass. They cut up sausages, onions, carrots and a bit of garlic which were dumped into the heated pan on the stove top. The ingredients started to sizzle on contact, a notion that caught the drider’s attention, leaning forward with a hint of curiosity while maintaining a wide gap of distance.
“Hungry?” Tav asked, keeping their gaze on the food.
Kar’niss jerked from some surprise, gazing about with some haste as if confused on who Tav was asking. He realized no one else was in the room bar the pair of them which made him shift with some nerves.
“We do not eat what True Soul eats,” his voice quiet.
Tav used a spatula to stir the contents of the pan to prevent it from burning, the various aromas mingling together drowning out the musty smell of the room. “A shame, this is a good meal. Also, you can call me Tav if you wish. True Soul sounds so...formal.”
Kar’niss’ eyes squinted, crossing his arms over his chest. “No, Majesty bids we address you as She wills it.”
Tav hummed and nodded knowing better than to push the issue further. They went back to cooking, grabbing a bit of lemon to squeeze over the meat for added kick and finally some salt and pepper to taste. “Curiously, what is it you do eat?” Kar’niss took a cautious step closer, more of his twisted form revealed in the dim light. “Blood. We must feed every four days, more often is ideal.”
“Heh, sounds like someone I know,” they mused. “Well are you able to at least have a taste? You still have a mouth, seems silly that you can’t at least sample what I’ve made.”
The drider pressed his lips into a thin line. “We can, but why would we? Pointless.”
Tav dumped the contents of the pan onto a plate, using a fork to scrape it into a manageable pile. They’d then wander over to where Kar’niss was perched, peering up at him in his cozy corner.
“Because I still owe you for saving my skin the other day. I’d be a corpse if you hadn’t acted quickly. This isn’t much of a thank you, granted, but it is a start.” They’d smile and stab the fork into the meat and vegetables. “You’ll have to come down though, I’m unable to reach you from here.”
A deep, vibrating growl rumbled in Kar’niss’ throat although it was not threatening, more like confused annoyance. At first it seemed he had no intention of answering the request, perfectly happy high up on the wall away from the perceived pest. Tav waited patiently able to see the mental journey Kar’niss was going through due to his conflicted expressions.
“Tch, if it pleases the True Soul then it also pleases our Queen,” Kar’niss concluded.
Hesitantly Kar’niss descended, his legs clinging to the stone walls barely managing to keep him aloft. He’d lean down as Tav lifted up their arm, extending the fork toward his mouth once in range. The former drow sniffed at the collection of food skewered through the metal prongs, his head jerking back as if the smell offended him.
“Come now, it’s not as bad as all that. Just one bite and I promise I’ll let you be,” Tav said.
Kar’niss sighed, his reddish eyes darting between the fork and Tav, his arms defiantly crossed over his chest. He leaned closer, his lips trembling as if he worried the food would bite back. With a sharp snap of his head his mouth took in most of the fork, lips forming a seal. He’d then jerk back using his lips to free the food stuffs from captivity, backing up and away from Tav as he did so. With his mouth full at first he looked stumped as if unsure what to do. Who knows how long it had been since he’d consumed solids and his recent inexperience was showing. Tav looked on but allowed Kar’niss to take his time, recalling how temperamental the drider could be.
He’d soon will his jaws into working, fangs gnashing awkwardly at the portion with some struggle. Thankfully it hadn’t been a large serving, soon conquering the morsels and alleviating his mouth with an audible gulp. His expression scrunched and a shiver ran down his spine as if the entire performance was most unholy. “Awful. Tastes like sawdust,” He concluded with a spit. He stuck his tongue out and began furiously wiping his palms over the surface to rid himself of any remaining particles.
Tav blinked at his assessment before a wide smile creased their lips, followed by an amused chuckle.
“I suppose I didn’t know what I expected. Your taste buds were probably permanently altered when you changed considering your new diet. As you said, pointless. I thank you for humoring me all the same, Kar’niss.” Tav scooped up a fork full for themselves, popping it into their mouth with a pleased crunch. They didn’t seem concerned about eating after the drider, something he took notice of.
Tav retreated to a nearby table to sit and finish their meal. Even though their interaction appeared to have concluded, Kar’niss remained. He smacked his lips together, rolling his tongue behind his teeth, trying to collect a hint of the offerings natural taste. Alas it appeared such was not meant to be. He peered at Tav with some confusion. They were easily the most bizarre True Soul he’d ever encountered and he wasn’t sure what to make of them. He rubbed the back of his neck while his eyes blinked intermittently out of sync, watching the strange individual while they ate.
“I do have a question,” Tav began between bites, “before you changed, what did you like to eat?”
The question caught him off guard, his mouth opening as if to speak yet his voice escaped him. It took him time to think it over to recall such a distant memory, scanning the depths of his broken mind. He shrank in place when he dug too deep, memories resurfacing in bits and pieces, many of which made his stomach churn. It took real effort to shove certain thoughts away in order to focus on what he wanted to recall.
“Grilled...rothé. I liked grilled rothé and zurkhwood mushrooms.”
“Ah, underdark cuisine. Makes sense. Well, if I can ever get my hands on either maybe I can make it for you. It might taste like sawdust but it’ll be a nice break from blood, hm?” Tav finished off their plate feeling far more sated.
The drider’s face scrunched up with some anger, crawling down the wall to step on the floor below. “Why does True Soul care? We do not need these things! All that matters is our Majesty’s will, Her desires! We must focus on guiding more faithful to Her path and that should be your only concern.”
Tav looked up from their empty plate as Kar’niss stomped over, his form tall and imposing especially with Tav seated as they were. They’d look up at him able to glean the conflicted wave of emotions etched in his expression.
“Are you not one of her faithful?”
“Tch, we are Her most faithful!”
“Who is to say I was not sent here to reward you for your service?”
Kar’niss felt every muscle in his torso tense in unison as if a minotaur had punched him in the chest. He backed down from the table lifting one hand to grasp at his hair, bewildered by such a bold statement.
“What is the True Soul suggesting?” “I am suggesting that our Queen sent me to look out for you. She led me to the lyre, She led me through the mountain pass, and She led me to you. Is it really such a far fetched notion, after everything you’ve done?”
Tav knew what they said was dishonest and they were playing a dangerous game. But they couldn’t hope to make leeway unless they humored the notion of the Absolute to some degree. Their very presence at Moonrise risked being compromised at any given moment. They had spoken with many in the tower and deemed most of them beyond saving. Most, except for Kar’niss. Tav’s gaze settled firmly on Kar’niss maintaining their composure hoping their deception wouldn’t be perceived.
Perhaps it was because Kar’niss desperately wanted approval from the Absolute, or perhaps his mind was far too fragile and scrambled to notice, but he seemed to believe the statement that was made. His sharp fingertips scratched the front of his throat, his bulbous backside wiggling with a clumsy wag.
“Sh-She has...rewarded us,” He whispered under his breath. The hint of moisture collected in the corners of his primary pair of eyes, a shaken breath pulled deep into his lungs. “Majesty, have you really heard us? We are worthy of your mercy?”
Tav looked on while Kar’niss processed everything. It broke their heart to see the drider like this, lost to the cult mentality and the desperate search for acceptance. They knew they had a long road ahead but if they could disconnect Kar’niss from the rest of Her followers, perhaps healing could begin. They rose from the chair, collecting their empty plate to dump in the nearby wash bin. They’d approach Kar’niss whose gaze seemed transfixed on the ceiling, delivering silent, tear-filled prayers to his savior.
“You are worthy of more than just mercy, Kar’niss. Majesty has seen the sacrifices you’ve made, as well as the suffering that came with it. She might not always speak to us but she shows her approval in other ways.” Tav paused and bit their lower lip as a thought came to them. “Our Queen has just spoken to me. Tomorrow evening meet me here after the patrols have left.”
Kar’niss swallowed heavily, rubbing his eyes with the back of his hand. “She speaks?! What did She say, True Soul?”
“I can’t tell you, not yet. Tomorrow all will be revealed. Trust in our Queen and all will be well, alright?”
“Y-Yes...yes, She knows what is best, she will protect us with her endless wisdom. We will return here tomorrow.”
Kar’niss wouldn’t spare a moment more loitering in the kitchen. He had to retrieve his moon lantern from Balthazar, he needed to be prepared for what was on the horizon. He climbed back up the wall and headed for a hole in the ceiling, barely managing to squeeze his large body through, entering the second floor. Tav stood there and watched him retreat, exhaling a heavy breath of relief. That was close, too close. They had plans of their own now and the clock was ticking. They’d grab their pack and hoist it over their shoulder, the cogs in their mind working overtime.
“I really hope this works, for his sake and mine.”

Absolutely fantastic kar’niss fic on Ao3 by tsurai called Mithridatism
Would you ever be willing to write a mating season fic for Kar’Niss like the one you wrote for Halsin? 👉👈
Ngl nonny when I lay my head on my pillow last night I was rotating smutty and darkly romantic Kar’niss thoughts in my mind.
There were no Kar’niss fics on ao3 when I checked yesterday but @shaken-veil (mvp) spotted one that just got posted and linked me and it’s amazing, called He Carries the Moonlight by WickedWitchofDathomir. It’s smutty, it’s romantic, he’s unhinged, he adores his “mistress” but he takes charge as well. Swoon swoon swoon.
Right now my word well is empty but never say never when it comes to hot monsters. Thank you for the ask!

I might have posted this but I can’t find it… this might be like goofball universe and not canon in my fanfic but here’s their baby that’s not a spider or a drider its somethin else and it has arachnid intelligence and reasoning. It does not have elf brain . It crawls all over the walls and is self sufficient and karniss wants to eat it . So does valence but he pretends he doesnt

Tam'lin x Kar'niss Fic???
Maybe, just maybe I'm being really hot and sexy and actually writing up the beginning of my fic 'Arachnophilia'.
MLM, if you like power-bottom pleasure-dom x submissive top, this might be the fic for you :D
Nothing spicy in the first chapter (except for a brief mention of something happening at Sharess' Caress), so you'll have to bear with me. First bit's below the break.
His name was Tam’lin, though it had seemed of little importance before meeting those he now called ‘friends’. Before, he had been simply ‘the Szarkai’; a pale drow raised only to be planted upon the surface amongst darthiir, to blend in with the faeries and ultimately bring subterfuge and death to their ranks in the name of House Baenre. He had been a spy, an assassin, a pawn.
He’d had virtually no will of his own, until he had. And when he discovered what he was capable of, he’d legged it at the first opportunity, House Baenre and Menzoberranzan be damned. He’d not been too pleased to see his dear cousin, Minthara, at the side of the Absolute.
Yet it would have displeased him greatly to see her suffer any more than she already had. Horrid as she could be, he knew that most of her wickedness was merely a sharpness of the mind; much like himself, back before he had discovered his vulnerability, he, too, had tended to think first, feel later, rather than experience both at the same time.
It was a difficult habit to break, especially when hardwired into one’s very nature. He couldn’t fault Minthara for it any more than he could fault Astarion for being the way he was. And that vampire had many flaws, when it came to vulnerability. The man’s self-preservation instincts, had they been given physicality, would have been sturdy enough to keep Ketheric, Orin and Gortash away, singlehandedly. Would have been, had Tam’lin not been so curious, had he not craved the vampire spawn’s companionship.
They had slept together multiple times, until one quiet night at camp, somewhere near the Last Light Inn. Astarion had thanked him for what he’d said, the way he’d defended him from that deplorable drow woman. Honestly, Tam’lin hadn’t wanted to be thanked for it; he didn’t need the thanks, what he needed was for his friend (a word which, until recently felt too funny in his mouth) to recognise that despite Cazador’s hold on him, he had autonomy.
If Tam’lin could sever himself from House Baenre, and Shadowheart from Shar, Lae’zel from Vlaakith, and Minthara from the Absolute, then by all the hells, Astarion could free himself from Cazador. Even when Tam’lin’s words came out a little too harshly, when his face did not present itself in the soft manner he intended it to, the szarkai was hell-bent on shoving Astarion in the right direction. He just needed encouragement, and a bit of support. Perhaps a bit of discipline, every now and then.
Although, some of the words that came from Astarion’s lips shocked him. He knew the man’s cruelty was but a front, but even so, some things he’d said had made Tam’lin’s palms itch, made his skin crawl, made his teeth squirm for a scrap. Many times, he’d come close to fist-fighting the one he called his closest friend.
This night had been one of those times.
The szarkai sat alone, in his deep purple tent, on top of his nest of rich jewel-tone cushions and blankets, watching his summoned spiders, Janet One and Janet Two, patrolling back and forth under the canopy just outside of the threshold, which was illuminated by the soft pink, green, and orange glow of a bioluminescent hanging basket.
Gods, he felt miserable, as he looked at the spoils of the day. Ketheric’s netherese stone. Balthazar’s quietly twinkling moon-lantern.
And Kar’niss’ sword, cruel-sting.
The night was quiet. Too quiet. Tam’lin’s dusky, pale mauve eyes narrowed as he analysed his emotions, picking them apart as he chewed at his blackened lips. What was this feeling? It seemed to be an amalgamation, of sorts. Anger, at Astarion’s reaction to his choice to knock the drider unconscious, instead of killing him. Sadness, that Kar’niss had been taken advantage of in such a way in the first place. Regret, possibly? Or something that felt like envy, that he should have been the drider? That he should have been taken in by the Absolute, for he was sure his crimes against Lolth were far greater than whatever Kar’niss had done. He’d deserved that fate. Possibly worse.
He remembered where he had been before being abducted by the illithids. He’d been in the city, hungover and still possibly drunk from the night before, that night in Sharess’ Caress with the male drow twin whose name he couldn’t recall. What he had remembered of that night were but fragments; the honeyed words about the milky pallor of his skin and hair, the mood-ruining questions about his scars and his alleged intimidating aura, the purr of ‘come, szarkai,’ and the beckoning of a slender finger that would later snuff out the lights. Mundane and mildly irritating things, mostly, but a few diamonds in the rough, such as the mysterious click of a box’s lid followed by a thousand little running pinpricks over his chest as the young lad had expertly stroked his insides. A guilty pleasure. One he hadn’t ever even considered, but one he had yet to stop thinking about. He still remembered the tickle of gossamer sliding over and sticking to his ribs as the tiny beasts had scattered, tickling him enough to steal a chuckle.
Sad, however, that he’d stooped to spending nights in brothels and drinking the towns dry.
He’d let himself go, for a while, content to play the part of the dark, vigilante folk-hero for the less fortunate, but after that while, it had started to get boring. Stories were being spun about him, rumours went flying, and Tam’lin did not welcome the prospect that people were making observations about him and speculating over what he did behind closed doors. He valued his privacy. He valued his autonomy. He valued people not trying to put him in a box.
Gloomstalker, the darthiir called him. The shadow ranger, with footsteps as silent and fleeting as the mist, tracking down his prey, setting traps, and then waiting in ambush, like the patient trapdoor spider that sizes up an arrogant snake. Possibly the only metaphor he’d heard about himself that he could be somewhat proud of. The spider that takes down snakes.
He frowned deeply as he looked at cruel-sting, propped up against his backpack in one of the tent’s corners. Kar’niss wasn’t a snake. He didn’t deserve to be hunted. Certainly didn’t deserve to be attacked by more than just himself. His throat was raw from shouting at the others to get back, to take down the wraiths, the shadows, anything but the indignity of attacking the poor drider like a pack of hyenas. Jaheira hadn’t wanted to trust him to take down Kar’niss alone. He’d had to force her to retreat, himself, and that was something that hadn’t gone down well when they had all returned to camp.
He was still bitter about it. She was still bitter about it.
Tam’lin ground his teeth together, furiously, stewing in his emotions. It would take a while for him to calm down.
So engrossed, was he, that he almost did not see Janet One beginning to jitter around. Almost missed the clicking chirrup of Janet Two as she assumed a more defensive position.
Shadows. It must be the Shadows.
It was pitch black, outside the tent, with only the campfire’s distant glow illuminating the other tents, all closed up for the night. All of his friends were asleep.
That thought might have been somewhat comforting, had he not seen a particularly fast shadow darting in reflection across the fabric of Astarion’s tent, directly adjacent to his own, or heard quiet, frantic whispering in the dark.
Tam’lin tucked a snowy strand of hair behind a pale, pointed ear and silently loaded an arrow into his longbow, readying it, ever vigilant. He watched his spiders like a hawk, before realising something about the positions they had assumed. Female spiders, recognising a male.
They know their own kind.
Tam’lin put the bow down, and picked up cruel-sting, instead. He waited. And waited.
Come to me, first, and I'll see if you are friend or foe. I'll give you the chance that the other's won't.
