Tsuzuru: Yeah. What’s up?

Kaoru: “Um, are you free this Saturday? If you don’t have any plans, I have a favor to ask you.”

Tsuzuru: A favor?

Kaoru: “On that day, there’s going to be a time when it’s just Ataru, Takeru, and Yuzuru home… so I was wondering if you could come over, Onii-chan.”

Tsuzuru: Huh, just the three little ones?

Kaoru: “Yeah, that’s why I’m a little worried. If only Noboru and Suberu could be there…”

Kaoru: “But are you busy with college and your theater company?”

Tsuzuru: No, it’s okay. I’ll be over there this Saturday to watch the little ones.

Kaoru: “Really? Are you sure?”

Tsuzuru: Yeah, you don’t have to be afraid to ask me to do things. You can usually count on me when it comes to things like this.

Himena Aika's magical girl story was very good and written well for her perspective but I did not enjoy experiencing it

Yachiyo Nanami's is bafflingly incorrect with later story stuff but it's so bad and questionable in parts that it actually becomes kind of entertaining

I really liked the first 2/3 of Sasara Minagi's mgs but the conclusion fell flat for me and kind of ruined it

Fairytale Mifuyu had a really good mgs but i can't be caught on record saying that

I stared at Haregi Homura's magical girl story thumbnail for like 2 minutes, wondering if I had watched it then remembering that I did. Not a fan but not bad enough to put on the least favorite list. Just painfully mediocre.

I've never been able to sit through and watch all of Cool Homura's mgs because attention span bad and bored. sorry homu. your swimsuit mgs is still the best though!

I haven't watched enough Costume Stories to put them on here, but I liked Temari's winter costume and I liked Sana's pajama costume.

Thank you all for voting! Some results are exactly what I expected but quite a few were confusing to me. Sometimes I wish I knew why people voted the way they did. Also, just for the record, I did randomize these. None of these pairings were planned.

Now for something important I'm going to say before things get too bad.

I've seen a few heated replies that are getting too close to aggressive for my taste. Guys, this is for fun. There are no real world consequences to the result of this poll bracket. If I believe someone is getting too aggressive or insulting towards other voters (or me), I will block. I don't want any true negativity here and if preventing some people from interacting keeps peace, I will do it. Sakuya: What kind of curry is it?

Izumi: It’s a curry of chicken, potatoes, onions, and peanuts simmered in spices and coconut milk.

Sakuya: It's quite unique to have peanuts included! I’m excited to know what it tastes like.

Izumi: I made a lot, so you can have seconds!

Masumi: I’ll eat the whole pot until there’s nothing left...

Izumi: You don’t need to eat the pot too.

Chikage: The spices work well, and the ingredients are simmered soft and tender.

Tsuzuru: Thanks for helping me out today.

Omi: Sure, no problem. I never imagined this would be the location though.

Tsuzuru: I’d like to film as we take a leisurely walk.

Omi: I see. Alright, can I start filming then?

Tsuzuru: Yeah, go ahead. Hi there, it’s Minagi Tsuzuru. Fushimi-san is the one in charge of the camera.

Omi: Hello.

Tsuzuru: We’ve come to the riverside today. The thing is, I get asked quite often in my fan letters and comments on how I take my breaks. It’s been hard to find a chance to answer that, so I thought I’d take this opportunity to actually show you guys.

Omi: So you’re saying this is the place you come to take a breather?

Tsuzuru: That’s right. When I get stuck while I’m writing, I find that doing something different helps get the ideas flowing. So, when I gaze out and walk by the waterside like this, I can both relax and come up with good ideas. It kills two birds with one stone.

Omi: Oh, really? I guess there are still things about you that I didn’t know either…

Tsuzuru: Hm? Oh, there’s dandelions blooming over there. Can we go take a quick look?

Omi: Sure, no problem.

Tsuzuru: They bloomed here, huh… I’ve been here so many times, yet I had no idea.

Omi: Looks like a new discovery. Do you like dandelions, Tsuzuru?

Tsuzuru: Hmm, I suppose you can say that? I have an emotional attachment to this flower. I find myself looking for it whenever spring comes around…

Omi: An emotional attachment?

Tsuzuru: It’s a flower of a precious memory with a friend.

Omi: Ah, a friend…

Tsuzuru: We’ve been friends since elementary school, and he’s the one who inspired me to start writing scripts. There was a period of time we weren’t in contact with each other. But we reunited and we were able to become friends all over again. Now, that friend comes to the theatre every time to watch my performances. And he sends me fan letters and dandelion bouquets.

Omi: …That’s a great memory. And a great friend.

Tsuzuru: Yes…!

Takeru: Tsuzuru nii-chan!?

Yuzuru: Omi onii-chan’s here too!

Tsuzuru: Takeru? Yuzuru? How come you two are here!?

Takeru: Yaaay, it’s Tsuzuru nii-chan!

Yuzuru: Onii-chan!

Kaoru: Why are you here, onii-chan?

Bedtime stories (Tsuzuru centric)

Bedtime stories.

They have always been a core part of Tsuzuru's childhood. He had to thank his parents for that— and well, his brothers too. Maybe.

It's almost half past nine when Mr. Minagi gently readjusts the duvet so that 3 years-old Tsuzuru is buried warmly beneath it. Tadoru and Meguru are curling their bodies as best as they can around him —the bed definitely small for three kids to lay on it.

"Okay. Are we comfortable and ready?" A chorus of high-pitched squeals and excited nods received in return makes the man chuckle. "All right, then."

Bedtime stories have always been a thing in the Minagi household. After all, acquiring books from the library was free, offered a big variety of options, and allowed for good family quality time.

Of course, happen to be a moment when no book came in handy, their parents easily resolved to make-up stories as well. About faraway lands, fantastic worlds, or even ordinary tales with characters that had quite the resemblance to their own family, the scripwright would recall with nostalgia once he grew up.

It was definitely tiny Tsuzuru's favorite part of the day.

Tonight he watches his father open the book and begin to read, their mother with baby Kaoru in the room next door. Tadoru has been complaining here and there lately about the type of books and stories they sometimes get, but even Tsuzuru can tell both he and Meguru continue to lay on his bed rather than in their respective bunks because they too love the experience. The voices both their parents make when storytelling —a high-pitched witch, a grumpy dinosaur, or an energetic raindrop among others, even the motions and background noises of the wind and machines— brought a genuine smile to the boys' faces, not allowing a single moment for them to get distracted.

And while his older brothers tended to make comments and interrupt here and there asking questions, young Tsuzuru stays still as if in trance, turquoise eyes shining fascinated with each story, quietly absorbing every detail. Even after the storytell ends and they are tucked in their beds he sometimes continued the story in his little mind, wondering what more could have happened afterward. Of course, nothing really makes sense at that age. So while he still has fun, he doesn't share anything out loud. For now, he prefers to listen to his parent's voices from the comfort of his bed alongside his big brothers.

Years pass by, and 6 years-old Tsuzuru is now the one who rests on the bed of a barely 4 years-old Kaoru. This time mum is the one telling the story and his father is the one next door, putting the twins to bed in their cribs.

She's currently imitating the voice of a lion. It's a made-up story Tsuzuru already knows by heart and yet he smiles happily as her mother winks at him knowingly while she speaks. Because like always, she portrays it in such a way he can't help but get excited even when he knows the outcome.

At some point, however, and despite her best effort, the slowing sounds of her breathing signaled that the story was lulling her towards sleep whilst the young one looked up at her with eager eyes, showing little sign of fatigue.

"Mummy...?" little Kaoru calls. He tries to reach her arm and wake her up to no avail. She mumbles something unrecognizable under her breath — twins do take energy like no parent is used to, no matter the experience.

"We should go to sleep," Tsuzuru whispered. "Mom's tired."

"But I want to know what's going to happen to the lion!"

Tsuzuru sighs, half-expecting the reaction. He stays still for a few seconds, looking for any movement coming from the bunks above them. Just snores. His older brothers had grown enough to stay awake for the end of a story they already knew.

"Mummy, you need to finish it!"

Tsuzuru jumps, startled at the pleads rising in volume. He looks towards their mother, whose head continues to tilt ever so slightly unaware of the situation. Then, a thought crosses his mind.

"Kaoru... Want me to tell you the story instead?"

He hadn't expected much, so when Kaoru's eyes —similar to his very own and his other brothers— stared back at him shining brightly, something jumps in little Tsuzuru's tummy.

"Yeah!" With a newfound interest his younger brother curls up again on the bed, the tattered form of what once was Tsuzuru's teddy bear —prior to him Meguru's and most likely Tadoru's—squashed beneath his arm. Glassy eyes stare up at him, waiting. Tsuzuru feels his cheeks heat up at the thought of being suddenly the center of attention.

“All right, uh. Are you comfortable...?” he awkwardly tries to imitate his parent's tone. Kaoru giggles excitedly, and nods. "Okay then. Where were we..."

"The lion didn't want to play with the monkeys because he— um, he didn't want to lose!"

"Right. So after that, he encountered a Crocodile—" resting his head back on the soft pillow next to Kaoru, he lowered his voice in order to not wake their mother. "who said 'Come play with me!' But the lion said..."

The wood of the door cracked slightly. Not much of course, but enough to let the two young boys know someone was entering the bedroom.

“Daddy! Come!” Kaoru rises up once he recognizes him, whispering excitedly. He pats his own bed with one hand, using the other to point toward the Tsuzuru, who was sitting next to him as well. "Tsuzu-nii is telling me the adventures of Sparsly the Lion!”

“He means Sparky the Lion.” Tsuzuru clarifies bashfully after seeing his father's look of confusion. "Mum fell asleep so, uh... I tried to tell him the story. Since I already knew how it ended." he scratched the back of his head shrugging. Kaoru agreed enthusiastically.

"It was so much fun!"

"I can see that." His father laughed. He sat on the bed listening to Kaoru's ramble while trying to wake his wife. Once she opened her eyes, looked at her young children on one side and at his husband on another, her expression turned remorseful.

"Don't tell me I fell asleep."

The man smiled in understanding while Kaoru grabbed her hand grinning. "You did, but listen! Tsuzu-nii told me the story!"

"Oh? Did he now?"

"And it was better that yours!"

Ms Minagi gasped, placing a hand on her chest. "Even better than us?"

"No! Not that good...!" Tsuzuru shook his head, flustered at the mere thought of substituting his parent's storytelling. "I just— added some things after the end because Kaoru kept asking for more."

"Mhm! It was awesome!"

"So we got ourselves our very own storyteller, uh..." his father stated as he rubbed his nose against both of them, his hair tickling their faces in the process, making them laugh. Her mother stood up from the chair amused, taking the opportunity to check on the other two boys in the bunks above.

"Okay." the man eventually claimed. "I think it's about time we all try to get some sleep. Can't believe your older brothers can sleep this soundly with the amount of noise we are making."

Kaoru pouts, but allows his dad to tuck him in, Tsuzuru already on his way to enter his own bed.

"Tsuzuru?"

The 6-year-old turns his head towards his mother, who sat on the edge of his bed, trying not to wake a snoring Meguru on top. "I'm sorry for falling asleep in the middle of our bedtime story. Thank you for covering for me, that was really nice of you."

Tsuzuru blushes, covering himself with his blankets until they reach his nose. "I didn't want to wake you. Noboru and Suberu cry a lot lately and Tadoru-nissan says you two don't sleep."

Her mother laughed, looking at him with affection. "We get enough sleep, don't worry honey. Seems like today I was just a bit more tired." She began to run her fingers through his hair. Tsuzuru nodded, although he didn't seem fully convinced. "Hey, I was thinking..." she got closer, whispering as if they were about to share a secret. "How about you help us next time to come up with a new story?"

"Knowing more about Sparky the Lion does sound like a good idea." his dad conceded as he passed by, ruffling Tsuzuru's head before heading out of the room.

The suggestion makes Tsuzuru's eyes shine. "...Are you sure?" he whispers back.

Her mother's turquoise eyes soften at the view. Their third oldest wasn't the selfish type, but both she and her husband could tell when something called his attention, and storytelling was definitely one of those things. "Absolutely." She smiled, tucking him into bed and kissing his cheek in the process.

Standing up, she went back to Kaoru's bed to finish the nightly routine and walked to the door, her spare hand on the door frame. "Sweet dreams."

Tsuzuru closed his eyes as the lights went out, a smile decorating his face.

"You? But Tadoru-nissan you suck at reading stories!"

"Oh come on go easy on me, I'm trying my best to— Mitsuru can you stop running, please?" once the 18-year-old Minagi finished putting on the boy's pajama he stood up and headed towards a shelf filled with books. Looking around for a bit while humming, he ended up picking a colorful one. "Okay, how about this one?"

The twins shook their heads at the same time from the bunks. "We have already read that one!"

"So? You guys have heard all of these books."

"That's why we need a new bedtime story, right Tooru? Mitsuru?"

Tooru played with his glasses in the bed below, quietly nodding without saying anything out loud. Meanwhile, Mitsuru looked up at them curiously. "New story...?" he repeated.

"Yeah! Something you have never heard. Isn't that cool?"

The youngest in the room beamed at the thought. "Mitsuru wants a new story too!"

"See?"

"You two I swear— ah, Tsuzuru, Kaoru. Thank you for cleaning the kitchen. Were you able to call mum and dad?"

"Yeah, they are both still stuck in traffic. Why's there so much noise in here anyway?"

The oldest groaned, dropping himself onto the floor. Of course, at the motion, Mitsuru did not waste a second before he began to climb onto him, amused by his reaction. Tadoru paid no mind to it. "Where's Meguru?"

Tsuzuru shrugged sitting on Tooru's bed. "I think he's still trying to change Takeru's diapers."

"Great. Okay, that's it." Standing up he put the book back in the self, tuck Mitsuru into bed and walked to the door. "You lot, time to go to sleep."

"What?!"

"But you didn't even read us a book!"

"And what do you want me to do? You criticize my reading skills and I can't come up with a story out of nowhere."

"Why don't you do it?" proposed Kaoru looking at Tsuzuru. The boy raised his eyebrows and pointed to himself.

"Me?"

Kaoru shrugged, placing his hands in his pockets and leaning on the wall. "You are the one who comes up with most of the ideas for our made-up stories anyway."

Tsuzuru faltered. "Well, yeah but—"

"THAT'S IT. I GIVE UP. TADORU-NISSAN!"

Meguru's scream from the room next door followed by a piercing baby's cry made everyone grimace. The oldest took a long deep breath and clapped his hands together. "All right! As of now, Tsuzuru has been officially put in charge of storytelling."

"What!?" he complained rising from the bed. "But I just cleaned the kitchen with Kaoru!"

"Please, Tsuzuru, do it for me. I'll invite you to anything you want some other day, okay? Thanks, buddy!" he ruffled his hair.

"TADORU-NISSAN!"

"I'm coming, Meguru!"

"But Tadoru-nissan you can't just—!" before Tsuzuru could finish the sentence, Tadoru was already gone. Not a second later the phone rang downstairs.

"I'll take it," announced Kaoru leaving the bedroom as well. "Could be mum or dad."

"Someone take that phone call!"

A scream and more distant baby cries continued to reach from the room next door. Tsuzuru sighed defeated and turned to the rest of the young ones resting on their beds. "All right, um... any suggestion?"

Young Tsuzuru would learn shortly two things:

One, taking suggestions was not the best way to spend a night without their parents at home.

And two, watching his brother enjoy his stories wasn't so bad after all.

"Tsuzu-nii, hurry!"

"Tsuzuru-nissan!"

"Coming...!" A sixteen years old Tsuzuru opens the door to the bedroom, encountering a full-on displayed camp distributed between two bunks. He sighs. "Aren't most of you a bit too old to wait for me to tell a bedtime story anyway?"

The twins glance at one another and then look back at Tsuzuru.

"Do you have any idea what is like to sleep when it's your turn to tell a bedtime story?"

"Yeah, I have no idea how Kaoru-nii does it."

"Right?"

"Okay, okay, I get it. Good grief..."

"Tsuzu-nii, can you sit next to me?" asks Mitsuru from his bed, his voice ever so quiet in contrast with Takeru's adamant whines.

"No, sit on my bed! You promised me! Yuzuru can sit with you Mitsuru!"

"I'm going to sit in the middle of the room so everyone can hear and that's the end of it, understood?" there's a chorus of nods.

At this point it's been years since he started to tell stories that he imagined in his head. The course of that one night so long ago and the excitement that came with Tsuzuru's made-up story —despite the chaos it provoked— opened a new door he hadn't thought existed before; About the what-if, of books they had already read. Then about new characters. New scenarios.

Soon enough, they were all portraying his stories, incorporating them in an attempt of plays for their parent's entertainment, which they definitely enjoyed. Because why not? Once again, it was free, provided lots of options, and allowed everyone to participate as much as they wished.

Even nowadays, bedtime stories are still a thing in their household.

Tsuzuru loved writing scripts. But there was this specific moment at night, when all of them were together in the same room and he could take a moment to watch their expectant eyes, that made it extra special.

"All right." Tsuzuru clears his throat and the room finally goes silent. He looks at his brothers, and a smile appears. "Are we comfortable and ready?"

okay so for those who don't know what tkana is, it's my silly little a3 jrpg au, and by "silly little" i mean it's kinda mean. like the apocalypse happens. or starts happening. semantics. so the basic plot is that the hanasakis/oukas/seifloras (minus juza plus kaoru minagi, sort of, i'm going somewhere with this trust me) are the most recent batch of Chosen Ones sent by the high priest (amadate) to defeat this great evil (kamikizaka) that keeps resurfacing every so often.

pause to note that izumi is like, not quite present in the story, she's like the goddess of this particular world (as she should be tbh) but never namedropped i think

hanasaki is basically like, the center of religion in the world tkana's set in (i think this was cause of aoshi? you know the hyakka kid) and in particular sakuya and masumi spent a LOT of time in the main temple there; masumi because his parents were usually too busy to look after him (free church babysitter) and sakuya because his parents were previous chosen ones who died on their quest and thus he kinda became a ward of the faith or whatever.

so like. they're both connected to the church via their particular circumstances, masumi kinda comes and goes depending on whether his parents have the time to pretend to give a shit, sakuya keeps getting taken in by relatives and then being sent back for one reason or another. so for masumi, the church becomes something more comfortable, because at least there people seem to care, right? and on the flip side, sakuya's got some level of connection to his parents there, but also the church is basically "the place i go back to when everyone else decides they're tired of me" so he actually starts to resent it.

cue them getting sent on their little chosen one thing and masumi being like "okay sure at least i get to do something to help" while acting all aloof about it and sakuya outwardly being like "oh i'm happy to help!" and internally going FUCK THIS FUCK THIS FUCK THIS
