In Defense of Lady Kang/Queen Sindeok (1/3)
As promised, here's the first part of my defense of Queen Sindeok, explaining her historical political situation + clearing up some common fandom misconceptions about her, which I don't blame anyone for since they originate from the show itself. I must admit that I have a bit of a soft spot for her since history generally tends to be unkind to women - this extends to modern media and MCTNA is no exception:
(more under the cut)
Before we start, I thought I'd give a small refresher on the Yi family constellation - crucial for setting up the conflict and crown prince issue - with the aid of this extremely useful graphic by bodashiri (excluding the daughters for simplicity's sake):
(From here: x)
As you can see, Yi Seong-gye (King Taejo of Joseon) had two wives:
His first wife Lady Han (Queen Sinui) gave birth to six sons: 1. Yi Bang-woo (Prince Jinan), 2. Yi Bang-gwa (Prince Youngan), 3. Yi Bang-ui (Prince Yikan), 4. Yi Bang-gan (Prince Hoean), 5. Yi Bang-won (Prince Jeongan) and 6. Yi Bang-yeon (Prince Deokan).
His second wife Lady Kang (Queen Sindeok) gave birth to two sons: 7. Yi Bang-beon (Prince Muan) and 8. Yi Bang-seok (Prince Uian),
meaning that Seong-gye had eight sons overall.
With that out of the way, let's get started!!!
1. Queen Sindeok was NOT a concubine
(From here: x)
She is referred to as Yi Seong-gye/King Taejo's capital/Seoul wife in the show too:
However, every time Bang-won calls her a concubine and her children illegitimate there is never any pushback or correction by anyone, not even when he calls her younger son Bang-seok/Prince Uian a ‘seoja’ (illegitimate child born to a commoner concubine or royal concubine) in front of Seon-ho:
You'd think Seon-ho would defend Bang-seok by correcting Bang-won... but nope. Nada.
Not even Queen Sindeok (!!!) is allowed to defend herself and her children when they get accused of the same:
Like, what is this madness!!!
Anyone who doesn't know about Korean history would never even SUSPECT that this isn’t actually true, and that Queen Sindeok is in fact a legitimate second wife and queen. By giving no pushback to the (false) claims of illegitimacy, the show seems to implicitly support Bang-won’s narrative of her being a lying, conniving, greedy bitch who wants to push her child on the throne despite having no right to it whatsoever as a concubine and bastard respectively.
Queen Sindeok's tragedy, the one that MCTNA fails to portray, is not that she was a concubine who tried to rise above her station (because she was not); it's that, due to the transition from Goryeo to Joseon, she found herself caught between two conflicting sets of laws:
(From Tombstones without a Tomb by Hildi Kang)
A queen while alive, and unjustly demoted to a concubine in death by Bang-won/King Taejong who used these legal changes and the new Confucian ruling to his advantage, her status was a matter of contention for scholars and kings alike for almost 300 years, until finally, in 1669, the scholar Song Si-yeol managed to amass enough people and put enough pressure on King Hyeonjong to make him give in to their demands and restore Queen Sindeok to her rightful status and honor as queen.
+ Bonus:
(From Tombstones without a Tomb by Hildi Kang)
Turns out that according to the new Confucian ruling, Bang-won himself should have been considered illegitimate too!! Surprise!!!
#my country the new age#my country: the new age#mctna#mctna meta#mctna critical#queen sindeok meta#queen sindeok and yi bang won#queen sindeok#yi bang won#history#seamayweed meta#seamayweed stuff#yes i wrote a whole essay about a minor character probably no one cares about lol#(though she IS an important historical figure - the FIRST queen of joseon!!!)#you may have noticed that i constantly refer to her as queen#bc that's what she IS despite bang-won's attempts at historical revisionism!!!#this is not to say that you have to like her or that you are a bad person for not liking her and for liking bang-won instead#bc that's not what this is about#it's merely what it says on the tin: a defense#also... just found out her death anniversary was only a few days ago on september 15!!!#you know what. maybe her spirit possessed me and made me write this 3 part essay about her

South Korean writer Han Kang wins the 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature.
Han, 53, is the first Asian woman to receive this prestigious award and the third writer from South Korea to do so.
The academy praised Han Kang “for her intense poetic prose that confronts historical traumas and exposes the fragility of human life.”
——
Pitch-Black House of Light
That day in Ui-dong
sleet fell
and my body, companion to my soul
shivered with each falling tear.
Get on your way.
Are you hesitating?
What are you dreaming, hovering like that?
Two-storey houses lit like flowers,
beneath them I learned agony
and towards a land of joy as yet untouched
foolishly reached out a hand.
Get on your way.
What are you dreaming? Keep walking.
Towards memories forming on a streetlamp, I walked.
There I looked up and inside the lightshade
was a pitch-black house. Pitch-black
house of light
The sky was dark and in that darkness
resident birds
flew up casting off the weight of their bodies.
How many times would I have to die to fly like that?
Nobody could hold my hand.
What dream is so lovely?
What memory
shines so brightly?
Sleet, like the tips of mother’s fingers,
raking through my dishevelled eyebrows
striking frozen cheeks and again
stroking that same spot,
Hurry up and get on your way.

Sweet Home & Cha Hyun Su
001 | Send me a fandom and I will tell you my:
Favorite character: cha hyun su
Least Favorite character: the pedo guy, kang seug-wan, jae-hwan
5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): jisu x jae-heon, yu-ri x sang-wook, eun yu x hyun-su, ( non canon): kang seok-chan x sergeant Kim yeong-hu, cha hyun su x ui myeong
Character I find most attractive: sang wook in s1 with that hairstyle and shirt 😳 , also hyun su in s3 and lee eunhyuk in s1
Character I would marry: Character hyun su or samg wook
Character I would be best friends with: yu-ri
A random thought: yi kyung's daughter has the coolest powers
An unpopular opinion: yi kyung daughter suffered a lot growing up and she deserved a better mother , hyun su did tue best he could but raising a child in an apocalyptic world is hard. Also most of the times she used her powers were to defend herself and the people had it coming.
My canon OTP: cha hyun su x eun yu ( unless s3 ruins it)
Non-canon OTP: ui myeong x cha hyun su in s1.
Most badass character: sang wook or yi kyung
Pairing I am not a fan of: ji-su x cha hyun-su ( sorry I see them as siblings in the show)
Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): yi kyung I guess??? I really dont know.
Favourite friendship: eun yu and ji su, and cha hyun su with han du-sik
003 | Give me a character & I will tell you
How I feel about this character: he is a cute cibammon bun that did not deserved to be bullied then used as a puppet. He suffered so much and cried so many tears. Writers please give him a happy ending in s3
All the people I ship romantically with this character: lee eun-yu and ui myeong/nam sang won ( this one is for shits and giggles lol)
My non-romantic OTP for this character: hyun su and lee eunhyuk I guess
My unpopular opinion about this character: cha hyun su could have been a villain and I wouldn't blame him for it. After all the shit he went through, it's understandable
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: Have more than one scene where he is happy lol. Especially more scenes with the little girl that he raised, I need more daddy hyun su scenes in s3
My OTP: cha hyun su and lee eun yu
My OT3: friendship wise: cha hyun su and eun yu and eunhyuk

Nhan dinh bong da Trung Quoc vs Han Quoc ngay 21/11
Trung Quốc: Yan Junling, Li Lei, Jiang Guangtai, Zhu Chenjie, He Yupeng, Li Ke, Wang Qiuming, Wang Shangyuan, Tan Long, Wu Lei, Wei Shihao.
Hàn Quốc: Kim Seung Gyu; Kim Jin Soo, Jung Seong Hyun, Kim Jin Su, Seol Young Woo, Hwang In Beom, Lee Soon Min, Son Heung Min, Lee Kang In, Hwang Hee Chan, Hwang Ui Jo.

No one believed his words when he asked for help and after his older sister’s funeral, his relatives tried to take him away but able to escape Shinju, using everything he have to reach to Jeollanamdo where he met his mentor Han-Ji and befriended another apprentice “Hwa-Do”, getting new name as well, until another tragedy at final selection where his friend was killed by demon who was obsessed with killing Han-Ji’s apprentices.
Informed of another attack at Mt. BongHak, he found the family dead in the house and discovered Gi-Cheol who was protected by AengDu as she has become a demon, yet still possess a heart and memory as human. Min-Gyu decided to send the two to his mentor and since then, he have turned a blind eye at every mission Gi-Cheol goes with his sister hidden inside the box. He is often misunderstood as “cold and arrogant”, but it was most likely due to his lack of proper communication with people and is always roasted by EunJu, getting into occasional arguments with Cheol-Mi. Also among the characters, Min-Gyu is the only leaders of Demon Slayers who always break 4th walls naturally by looking at the audiences/watchers without a word and sometimes silently ask the “picture box” to cut to next scene.

The Age of Shadows is a handsomely mounted, lightly melodramatic South Korean period spy thriller, punctuated by superbly staged action set pieces. The Age of Shadows also has a chunky runtime, and is thus able to play the long game; its initial sparkily lightweight approach shifts around the midpoint into a murkier, weightier tone, building towards an emotionally rewarding finale. It’s good watching, is what I’m getting at. But you have to stick with it to get the full effect. The Age of Shadows manages to be both entertaining and also be about the upsetting business of terrorism, while successfully evading the bear trap of tastelessness. I say “terrorism” but it should always be acknowledged that the name for people using violence for political ends always depends which side you’re on; for a South Korean audience these terrorists would be Freedom Fighters.
The Age of Shadows is set in Korea in the 1920s when it laboured under Japanese colonial rule (1910 – 1945). Over here in the UK there is a howling void in the heads of the hoi polloi like I, where the history of the East should be; we spend hours being taught about The Corn Laws but we only find out that Korea was once under Japanese rule by watching The Tiger (2015; awesome, watch it) or The Age of Shadows. Or it might just be me who is an idiot; either way don’t knock the educational content of movies about giant tigers or people in sharp threads planning to bomb an embassy. Anyway, after a few seconds research it looks like Japan, successfully eschewing military confrontation, slowly eroded Korea’s independence with some underhand shenanigans and a bunch of treaties from 1876 onward, tying the two closer and closer together, culminating in the Japan-Korea Treaty of 1910. This completed the annexation of Korea by Japan. Why would Korea sign such a thing, you may be understandably wondering. The ridiculous answer is they, or the then Korean regent Gojong, didn’t. Japan annexed Korea anyway. South Koreans have since dubbed this the Japanese Forced Occupation and The Dark Japanese Imperial Period. Korea was well miffed is the message I’m getting here. Hence the freedom fighters.
Since The Age of Shadows is a South Korean movie it is understandably very much not on the side of the Japanese overseers. It is very much on the side of the Korean freedom fighters, who are all plucky, photogenic and brave. You could easily come away from The Age of Shadows believing that they are so awesome that, like The Punisher©®™, no innocents ever get caught in their bomb blasts or crossfire. It’s a measure of the movie’s subtlety that this isn’t true. It wants you to root for the freedom fighters so it does somewhat soft soap the collateral cost; but it can’t bring itself to lie, the bodies of the innocent are there if you watch closely. Innocent isn’t a term the movie extends to the Japanese, who are the bad guys here (and to be honest, Japan of the 1920’s, I’m thinking Korea has a point here).
Surprisingly for an occupying force the Japanese are few in number. They seem to be operating on the Roman Empire model - where you go in, take a place over, and use the locals to police themselves; with the subjugating force occupying the upper echelons and running the martial apparatus. It’s a good model; you can cover a lot of ground with limited resources. But because you are outnumbered on the ground, you have to brutally dissuade any insurgents. Brutally, I stress. Hence all the Japanese characters are nasty pieces of work. There is a range of evil on offer though; the cartoony psychosis of number one goon Hashimoto (Uhm Tae-goo; cartoony, psychotic, good fun) or the quietly vile police chief Higashi (Shingo Tsurumi; supremely reptilian). Now, I wouldn’t take this as an indictment of the Japanese race as a whole, it’s more a reflection of the kinds of people who gravitate to the suppressive end of the police state. Basically, if they weren’t in uniform they’d be in prison. Every country has a rich crop of these sweethearts, not just Japan.
That’s the backdrop against which the epic sweep of The Age of Shadows unfolds. It is a big movie; Korea vs Japan! Freedom versus vassalage! Authenticity vs Inauthenticity! Love vs Duty! But it is also simultaneously a small movie; it’s all about Lee Jung-chool (Song Kang-ho; fantastically sympathetic), a Korean and also a cop working under the Japanese. It’s about how he grows some self-respect, I guess. How he learns that everyone picks a side, even if they don’t realise it; so it’s best to make it a conscious decision. The Age of Shadows opens with a crucial confrontation between Lee Jung-chool and Kim Jang-ok (Park Hee-soon; athletically defiant), a resistance fighter and ex-classmate of lee Jung-chool. This is a ferociously entertaining thrill of a night-time firefight with much rooftop running, and even a nifty bit of business with a severed toe; the kind of tossed off quirk Korean cinema does so well. Something is stirred within the laissez-faire breast of Lee Jung-chool, something which is positively agitated by his investigation into antique shop owner Kim Woo-jin (Gong Yoo; disarmingly pleasant), and a plot involving the transport of explosives by train. Kim-Woo Jin attempts to turn the copper, while Lee Jung Chool seeks to infiltrate the ambitious cell before their plans bear explosive fruit. But who is fooling who, and, ultimately, is someone fooling themselves?
What follows is a cloak and dagger game of cat and mouse which reaches a climax mid-movie, with a tense and expertly staged train journey/traitor hunt with a hectically violent conclusion. After that the games being played extend beyond the cast to envelop the audience as the The Age of Shadows keeps its cards close to its chest, dealing out revelations at a steady pace throughout this darker, harder half of the movie. It’s discreetly smart film making, so high fives and bear hugs to Kim Jee-woon. But I think most credit is due for segueing so smoothly from the initial Boy’s Own escapades to the quite harrowing consequences of defiance. The Age of Shadows pulls its punches, no doubt, but it still admits the ugly cost of defiance to a quite remarkably unpleasant extent. Ultimately The Age of Shadows is a beautiful, finely acted, whip-smart movie which secretes within its enthralling entertainment a soupçon of brutal truth.

#KDRAMAWOMENSWEEK Day Five - Favorite Debut
‘An actress whose debut you loved—you saw something in her that made you want her to do more projects, made you root for her; her debut stood out among other performances; her debut changed the landscape of kdramas.
Or a favorite actress who debuted 15+ years ago and is still working.’
Jeong Seon Gyeong, debuting as Jang Ok Jeong in Jang Hee Bin (SBS, 1995)
I didn’t mean to make this #jangheebinweek i swear
I make fun of Jang Hee Bin '95 a lot because of the production errors/camerawork, and deride the writer for the show’s unsavory misogynistic over(under?)tones, but there’s no denying that Jeong Seon Gyeong makes a solid drama debut with this show (ignore the bad ratings it’s a remake!!).
Other actresses who were chosen for the role of Jang Hee Bin would usually have at least 2~3 years of drama experience before being considered; with 2 movie roles to her name at the time, she wasn’t a first choice when it came to casting, being chosen only after Lee Young Ae, Kang Su Yeon and Shin Eun Gyeong [yes, from the Last Empress] turned the role down. She was also the least experienced of the main cast - even the writer’s son had a plethora of minor roles before being given the role of male lead.
Jeong Seon Gyeong delivered nevertheless, portraying a level of charisma that stood strong amidst her more experienced peers, drawing the viewer into Ok Jeong’s character (most of the time). Even now, with increased Internet access, her portrayal of Jang Hee Bin still wows modern viewers. Since then, she’s selected a variety of projects, her most recent being 2017/2018 dramas Viva Ensemble and Sky High*, both aimed to raise awareness for people with disabilities. Other notable works of hers include:
Empress Myeongseong (KBS, 2001) as Lady Youngbodang
Age of Warriors (KBS, 2003) as Lee Ui Min’s wife, Ms. Choi
Seo Dong Yo (SBS, 2005) as Mojin
Cruel Palace (JTBC, 2013) as Han Ok
Bel Ami/Pretty Man (KBS, 2013) as Lee Gim
She’s been in many movies as well, such as The Moon Rises on its Own (1994), Hot Roof (1995), Trio (1997), Busan (2009) and Romans 8:37 (2017).
