Photographer Steve McCurry and the cover of National Geographic magazine in June 1985 made her one of the most famous women in the world. Curiously, Sharbat Gula—her name—did not know until many years later that she was known around the world as 'the Afghan girl.' She was photographed in a refugee camp in Pakistan.
When in 2002 she found out that she was world-famous, at first, she was angry because she didn’t want to be photographed. However, when she learned of the positive impact her image had made, she was happy to have given meaning to so many lives. However, her own life has been a torment. In 2016, she was arrested for having fake Pakistani documents to avoid being deported. Before that, she had lived between Afghanistan and Pakistan in a refugee camp and then in a mountain, not much different. She got married and had four daughters. Her husband and one of her daughters died of hepatitis. She too was hospitalized for the same but survived.
Sharbat Gula is a Pashto, the most warlike of the Afghan tribes. It is said of the Pashto that they are only at peace when they are at war.
When asked how she managed to survive all these years, she responds firmly: 'It has been God's will.'
Before the Taliban arrived, Sharbat had plans for the future: 'I want to create a charity or a hospital to help all the poor, orphans, and widows.'

South Korean writer Han Kang wins the 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature.
Han, 53, is the first Asian woman to receive this prestigious award and the third writer from South Korea to do so.
The academy praised Han Kang “for her intense poetic prose that confronts historical traumas and exposes the fragility of human life.”

Pitch-Black House of Light
That day in Ui-dong
sleet fell
and my body, companion to my soul
shivered with each falling tear.
Get on your way.
Are you hesitating?
What are you dreaming, hovering like that?
Two-storey houses lit like flowers,
beneath them I learned agony
and towards a land of joy as yet untouched
foolishly reached out a hand.
Get on your way.
What are you dreaming? Keep walking.
Towards memories forming on a streetlamp, I walked.
There I looked up and inside the lightshade
was a pitch-black house. Pitch-black
house of light
The sky was dark and in that darkness
resident birds
flew up casting off the weight of their bodies.
How many times would I have to die to fly like that?
Nobody could hold my hand.
What dream is so lovely?
What memory
shines so brightly?
Sleet, like the tips of mother’s fingers,
raking through my dishevelled eyebrows
striking frozen cheeks and again
stroking that same spot,
Hurry up and get on your way.

1. If you choose a woman who works, you have to accept that she may not be able to manage the house entirely.
2. If you choose a housewife who can take care of you and manage your home completely, you must accept that she doesn’t contribute financially.
3. If you choose an obedient woman, you must accept that she depends on you and you are responsible for her well-being.
4. If you decide to be with a strong woman, you have to accept that she is independent and has her own opinions.
5. If you choose a beautiful woman, you will have to accept the higher expenses that come with it.
6. If you decide to be with a successful woman, you must understand that she has her own goals and ambitions, along with a strong character.
Perfect doesn’t exist. Everyone has their own unique qualities that make them special.

Did you know the world’s first University was founded in Africa (Morocco🇲🇦) by a woman?
Her name was Fatima bint Muhammad Al-Fihriya Al-Qurashiya (فاطمة بنت محمد الفهرية القرشية‎) a Muslim woman from Tunisia who founded the first known university more than 1,000 years ago.
The University of Al Qarawiynn, the world’s first university in 895 CE in Fez, which is now in Morocco🇲🇦, was founded by Fatima al-Fihri, as she is also known. The project was established using her share of her father’s wealth she inherited with her sister. The university started as a large mosque and later grew into a place of education. Today it is recognized as the oldest existing university in the world.
Let’s give these amazing women of history the exposure they deserve!
