wip ask game
Rules: post the names of all the files in your WIP folder, regardless of how non-descript or ridiculous. Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them, and then post a little snippet or tell them something about it!
I was tagged by @patrocool! Thanks for the tag! I’m not posting all of them, both because I have so many (30+!) and also because I've done this game before (see here for that post) and just don't have anything more to say about some of them than I already said that time. I'll give different info and/or snippets if someone asks me about one that's on both lists but I've already talked about. The answers to any I've been asked about this go around will be linked below!
DC Comics/Batfam:
Bruce, Harvey, and the RY1 Aftermath Fic
Jason Paranormal Detective Agency WIP
Leave Me and Live (Jason)
The Bruce Wayne Religion Discourse Fic
The Rise of Oracle
To Look For Herself in the Sunrise (Cass)
Six of Crows:
Horse Racing AU
Kaz-Wesper Wedding Gift Fic
Forced to Choose Fic
Forced to Choose-Basement Argument POV Switch
On the Seas and in the City (Post-Canon Kanej)
To Build a Legend (Inej Knife Fic)

And…most of the others I actually consider to be WIPs (and not just “ideas I have that I might theoretically get around to writing"):
Control (ATLA/Legend of Korra)
Pevensies Stay in Narnia AU (Narnia)
Meanwhile in the Galactic Senate (Star Wars)
TLJ Reworking (Star Wars)

Knife in the Back
a/n: Here it is!! The @grishaversebigbang project I did with the wonderful and talented @wafflesandkruge. This was so much fun to write and I hope you all enjoy it!
Materialki: @chaosvvolf (check out this amazing piece), @throughtheruin (feast your eyes on this beauty), @cinnonym (a 10/10 work of art), @corpsecro (we literally love to see talent), @kayadoodles (her mind is galactic with this one), @saintprivateer (brilliance in a single image)
Summary: Inej is one of the best detectives the city has to offer. As she gets closer to taking down one of the largest crime syndicates in Kerch, a body turns up out of nowhere and it points to Kaz Brekker, one of Ketterdam’s most dangerous hitmen, being the killer. But as Inej investigates the murder, there might be more to it than meets the eye: the murder, the suspects, and Kaz Brekker.
Ao3 Link
Prologue and Chapter 1 under the cut!
Prologue:
It was a dark night in Ketterdam. Not that any light truly ever pierced the dark clouds that seemed to perpetually hang over the city, but under the new moon the stars weren’t strong enough to illuminate the dark cobbled street.
The regular late night revelers seemed more subdued than usual. The air chillier and the wind ripping through any brave soul that stumbled through abandoned alleys.
It was almost funny the things that are able to pass in the dark: guns hidden under coats, hands twitching with an unquenchable craving, and bodies that might never truly wake up. The pale arm sticking out of a hastily placed tarp would have passed completely, if it wasn’t for one drunken man stumbling away from his latest high. The fall came before the scream, and the sound of it echoed down the alley.
True night could have hidden most evils, but even the shadows can choose to offer some truths-- and on this dark night the truth was this: a girl half-covered with a blue tarp, her eyes set in an endless stare, and a hole punctured in the place where her heart should have been.
Chapter 1:
Ketterdam was like most metropolitan cities: busy streets, short-tempered people, and high murder rates. Inej had only been with the police department for three years, but she honestly thought she’d seen it all. Her police academy years were spent doing her regular beats in the Barrel, the sinister underbelly of the pleasure districts of Ketterdam called the Staves. She thought that coming face to face with the broken, destitute, and neglected, she had finally figured out all the little secrets of this dark city. But Ketterdam had a way of keeping you on your toes, and today was proof of that.
“It’s not pretty, Inej.” Her partner, Matthias, lifted the police tape cordoning the crime scene from the curious eyes of the general public. He handed her a cup of coffee and she took a grateful sip. They were in an alley in one of the more run-down neighborhoods, the area dark despite the morning sun.
“Tell me.” Inej said.
Matthias sighed and led her to where a corpse that was being covered with a blue tarp. Inej inhaled briefly at the sight of the massive hole punctured in the dead girl’s chest, and just as quick she exhaled. Later, she’ll give herself time to think about how young the girl looked, or the way her eyes were open and unable to be put to rest. Later, she’ll say a little prayer for the currently unnamed girl. But for now, she braced herself to take in the details, to take in the scene, to look at everything like puzzle pieces itching to be made whole.
“Victim was found at about 2 in the morning, by a drunk trying to find his way home. He tripped over the arm and let out a scream. Neighbors from up there.” He pointed up to a fifth story apartment complex, “Called about the noise complaint, and we had officers on the scene fairly quick.”
Inej opened her mouth, but Matthias beat her to it. “We already interviewed the man who discovered the body, and he’s not a person of interest. He was barely sober enough to remember where he lived, much less murder someone. We’ll have to wait until Wylan takes a closer look before, but it looks like the girl’s been dead for more than twenty-four hours.”
She nodded in understanding and took a closer look at the pale corpse. Inej peered under the tarp, and hissed out a breath.
“Shit.” Inej cursed.
Matthias raised an eyebrow, “You know her?”
“She’s one of my informants. A girl I knew from when I was younger. She was helpful in some of my bigger cases, but I hadn’t heard from her in the last six months. I just assumed she finally got out of the city.”
“And you have no idea who she would be working with that could have gotten her killed?”
She shook her head and then started looking at the crime scene itself, “There’s no blood here.” She began to pace the length of the alley. “Not on the ground or on her clothes. So we can rule out robbery gone wrong. We need to find out where she was killed”
Matthias followed closely behind her, she could feel him thinking. People always accused Matthias of being a stoic brick wall, and while Inej might agree, she almost relied on that solid silence. After being her partner for almost two years, she knew that he would only speak up if all the facts aligned and made sense. He wouldn’t waste words on any conspiracy.
“This would have to be multiple assailants.” Matthias said contemplatively. “Or one highly organized individual. We haven’t seen anything like this for a while.”
Inej swept her eyes on the crime scene and she sighed, “And we have no word on any sort of wallet or phone?”
“Hasn’t been seen, but we’re going to try to get some facial recognition off the CCTV to try and identify her.”
Inej nodded and turned over the minimal amount of detail surrounding the crime scene. There was something achingly familiar about the set up. Dead body. Simple covering. Dumping ground. For all intents and purposes, it was minimalistic and clean-- sort of like the case form three years ago-- the one with--.
Inej’s eyes widened as a realization dawned on her.
She scanned the alley more closely taking in the position of the victim, the loosely tied tarp, the time of discovery, and its location. She remembered the details of another case she had spent hours and hours pouring over. She remembered the frustrating all-nighters, and barged in at Wylan’s office at any given moment demanding he review the evidence that was submitted. It was a case that had joined the thick folder in Inej’s desk titled “Cold Case.” And while most detectives had their own grief about their stack of unsolved murders, Inej’s problem wasn’t never finding the killer, her problem was that the son of a bitch was a snake that always slithered just out of her reach.
“Okay, Matthias let’s wrap up and send the body to--”
Inej’s voice cut short as she caught sight of a chillingly familiar object unceremoniously dumped in a heap of garbage three feet away from the corpse.
She took out a rubber glove from her pocket, and approached the pile of trash with careful precision.
“What is it?” Matthias asked.
She didn’t answer. She stepped over some rotten fruit, and reached for the lone black glove that was too clean to have been thrown away, and too nice to be a forgotten clothing item.
Inej held the glove up, “See anything, detective?”
He gave her a skeptical look, but obliged by leaning in and studying the simple black glove.
“It’s been worn a lot, but it’s not dirty. The leather is high quality, and still in good shape.”
“So why would anyone throw this away when winter is coming? Or better yet, why has no one taken it yet?”
Matthias shrugged, while Inej’s gears turned and turned. There was no way he would have been so careless. He’s never made a slip up like this before. But then again, maybe this was a message. Maybe he was finally tired of the shadows, and wanted Inej to find his glove as some sort of taunt-- or challenge.
And he knew she would take him on it.
“Take the body to Wylan, and get the autopsy report as soon as possible. I’ll catch up with you later.”
“Inej, what--”
“Also, there’s a marked folder in my desk. Grab it, and we’ll brief when I get back.”
“Where are you going?’
“I need to talk to someone.” She said distractedly.
She grabbed an evidence bag from one of the forensic agents, and stuffed the glove inside. She handed it back to the agent. “Get that tested, immediately.”
“Don’t do anything stupid without backup, Ghafa!” Matthias called after her.
She waved a hand behind her, but she was past being cautious. She folded herself back into the car and started inputting a familiar address into the GPS. If she was right about the glove, then she wasn’t letting Brekker get away from her. Not this time. She didn’t care if he was one of the deadliest assassins Ketterdam had ever seen. All men had to face justice someday, and it looked like Brekker’s time was drawing near.

My AO3 | Prompts (Currently not accepting requests!)
Tumblr media
MULTI-CHAPTER
~ Fate, Love, and Other Misfortunes (WIP)~
A Hogwarts + Soulmate Jurdan AU. Ever since Jude received her soulmark she’s been waiting with bated breath to meet and consequently strangle her soulmate. When she finally does find him, however, there’s more than one nasty surprise in store for her.
| AO3 | Chapter 1 | Chapter 2 |
~ A Strange Kind of Revenge ~
Based on a head canon I had about Cardan and Jude visiting the Mortal world and Cardan getting introduced to pick-up lines. That he uses. Frequently. Which, of course, completely irritates Jude.
| Completed on AO3 |
~ Partners Against Crime ~
A 2 part fic written for the 2020 Secret Snusband Gift Giveaway hosted by Jurdannet. Inspired by an episode of my favourite Cop TV show, ‘Castle’, in which a bet takes place with pretty high stakes. This is the story of Homicide Detectives Jude Duarte and Cardan Greenbriar and their mutual enmity which ends in something else entirely.
| AO3 | Chapter 1 | Chapter 2 |
PROMPTS/ONE-SHOTS
~ “The worst part is you didn’t even notice.”- Jurdan fluff. Cardan’s been hardcore crushing on Jude for years and they meet again for the first time in a while at Taryn and Locke’s engagement party.
~ *A kiss post break-up that neither was expecting but both needed* (action prompt)- Jurdan fluff. Cardan betrayed Jude and now he needs to convince her to grant him a second chance.
~ “No, don’t cry, I hate it when you cry.”- Jurdan fluffff. Jude has a vulnerable moment and Cardan says smart things for once. (Jk, I love him.)
~ “Sir, the pony rides are for children only.”- Jude, Cardan, Heather, Vivi and Oak head to the Renaissance Faire and Cardan bashing ensues.
~ “On a scale of one to ten how do you feel about nachos right now?” - More Jurdan fluff with a bit of the Duarte family mixed in.
HEADCANONS & CRAFTS
~ Pick-up line headcanon (inspiration for ‘A Strange Kind of Revenge’)
~ Handmade Cardan figurine
Tumblr media
MULTI-CHAPTER
~ The Worst of Two Worlds ~
Simon is a Shadowhunter and Baz is a vampire, specifically the Head of the Watford vampire clan. Strange things are taking place at Watford and something needs to be done about it.
| AO3 | Chapter 1 | Chapter 2 | On Hiatus
PROMPTS/ONE-SHOTS
~ The Taste of Rain and Scones- One shot, Simon and Baz have a moment in the rain. Originally written for the 2020 Carry On Countdown.
~ ’Heather- Conan Gray’- Angsty one shot, Baz knows that Simon would never go for a guy like him, but sometimes it almost seems possible.
~ “I caught your cold” - Simon is sick and he blames Baz. Short, fluffy, sick fic.

Fic writer interview
I was tagged by @marauders-groupie - thank you so much love, this was so fun!
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
51
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
287865
3. How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?
A Song of Ice and Fire - George R. R. Martin (17)
The 100 (TV) (13)
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood & Manga (11)
Six of Crows Series - Leigh Bardugo (3)
A Court of Thorns and Roses Series - Sarah J. Maas (3)
Avatar: The Last Airbender (2)
Shingeki no Kyojin | Attack on Titan (1)
Miraculous Ladybug (1)
also, not on ao3, but during Dark FF.Net Ages: Harry Potter, Chronicles of Narnia, Teen Wolf and Mortal Instruments and probably dozens more I can’t remember rn.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
All of them are for Gendry x Arya from A Song of Ice and Fire
1. I’ll spend this summer by your side - childhood friends to lovers, arranged marriage, canon divergence
 2. your lips, my lips, apocalypse - modern au, smut
3. on and on it spins - modern au, outsider’s POV
4. it was a pretty good bad idea, wasn’t it though? - friends to lovers, smut, modern au
5. our love full of storms - domestic, hurt/comfort, kid fic, modern au
5. Do you respond to comments, why or why not?
I do - I love interacting with readers in the comments section and it gives me a chance to re-read said comments (which instantly makes my day. every time and without fail)
6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
For ASOIAF: somewhere between sorrow and bliss probably. It’s also easily the most controversial thing, fandom-wise, I’ve ever written hahah. for now i am winter and be still, my tongue are pretty damn angsty too
For FMA:B : soon you'll get better cause this fic is high-key me processing my mom’s death and i’ll never get used to it
7. Do you write crossovers? If so, what is the craziest one you’ve written?
No
8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?
Yup, most notably on here's to the mess we make - oh, good old days of bellarke vs clexa fandom war. Miss it now
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Yup, both explicit and kinda vague. I think I wrote vanilla a few times too, but I definitely most enjoy writing kinky sex with BDSM elements
10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
If I had, I am unaware
11. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Same as above
12. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Nope
13. What’s your all-time favorite ship?
As you can clearly see in the list of the fandoms I write for, it changes quite often. I would say my all time fav OTPs are probably gendrya, royai, stydia, bellarke, victuuri and kanej, but tbh this list is never-ending and never-closing
14. What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
I’ve got a few gendrya stories started but I don’t think I’ll come back to writing for this ship
15. What are your writing strengths?
Tbh, I have no idea. I was praised for my descriptions a lot and I guess I am generally happy with the flow of my fics.
16. What are your writing weaknesses?
Plots, PLOTS! I cannot construct plots for shit. Also, English is not my native language so I obviously make lots of mistakes which I cannot always detect myself.
17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
If it’s done well, it’s a fantastic technique (Murder Ballad comes to my mind especially). But it is not very often done well and it can be very distracting and irritating for the reader.
18. What was the first fandom you wrote for?
Probably Harry Potter, but it was over 15 years ago so who the hell knows.
19. What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?
it's still you (the 100) - I have a deep, deep fondness for this fic, even for how unpolished it is
our love full of storms (ASOIAF) - probably the best thing I’ve ever written, tbh
somewhere between sorrow and bliss (ASOIAF)  - the one fic where i went with my guts instead of choosing the ending my readers wanted me to choose
i’m tagging @yanak324, @duskandstarlight and @whatanybodygets cause i am VERY curious of their answers

Marriage of convenience detective AU, Kanej? I hope you like it!
I loved it! I could turn this into a full fic, but I really don’t have the time to write that so here’s a snippet:
Being a merry bandof private detectives (with a not-so-merry leader) meant sometimes they had toget their hands dirty. And if getting their hands dirty meant using a falseidentity to get into some guy’s house and investigate whether or not he had kidnapped an up and coming Ravkanscientist… Well. That was part of the job. They’d all signed up for it.
However, Jespersuspected Kaz hadn’t exactly signed up for this.
“Ready to actlike you’re in love with Inej for the rest of the night?” Jesper asked. Notthat Kaz needed to act like it when healready was, but saying that wouldjust be asking for Kaz to impale himon his cane.
Kazhuffed, eyeing his dark suit in the mirror suspiciously. As always, Jesper hadno idea what he was thinking, but he wore his usual look of disdain. “Idon’t have to act in love. We’remasquerading as a married couple. Actual married couples rarely love eachother.”
“Alwayshave to put a downer on things, don’t you?” Jesper grinned. “But,” he continued slyly. Really, this entire situation gave him waytoo much ammunition to throw at those two, “you are technically married. Mr. and Mrs. Rietveld.”
“Ileft the name Kaz Rietveld behind when I left this country,” Kaz counteredcoldly, a little of his lilting Kerch accent seeping into his voice. “Myname is Kaz Brekker. And you know Inej only married me so she could get intothe country for this job. She’ll divorce me once we’re done. We didn’t marryfor love, and I won’t pretend we did.”
“Uh huh,”Jesper said, tiring of Kaz’s fidgeting and reaching forward to forciblystraighten his collar himself. “But you are aware that this party you’regoing to is one specifically forcouples? Whether this guy we’re investigating is a kidnapper or not, he’s amassive romantic. I wouldn’t be surprised if you had to—”
“Shutup, Jesper.”
Jesper’spatience hit its limit. “You and Inej are married, Kaz, and not justbecause of the citizenship. I’m technically a citizen of Kerch too, so is Nina, but Inej still chose you. You’resmart—figure out why.”
“Jesper—”
“Ahem,” came a pointed cough. Jesperand Kaz simultaneously turned their gazes on Nina, who stood in the doorway, looking amused. “Inej is ready to go. Are you?”
“Yes,”Kaz clipped out before Jesper could say anything. Jesper scowled at him.
“Iwasn’t finished—”
“Well,I was finished listening.” He tightened the dark tie for good and ran ahand through his hair. On anyone else the gesture might have seemed nervous; onKaz, it just seemed bored. “Let’s go.”
He strodeout into the hallway, only to stop dead.
Jesperpeered over his shoulder to get a glimpse of what had stopped him. He hid asmile behind his hand.
Inej.
Of courseit was Inej. No one else affected him so profoundly.
She leanedagainst the wall opposite the door, her dark hair tied in a convoluted bun atthe back of her head. She wasn’t wearing anything revealing—her dark grey dresswas modest and plain; Saints, it even had pocketson the skirt—but the lighting made her skin luminescent. She was smiling one ofher small, half-smiles at Kaz, who seemed quite unable to breathe.
Jespersnorted under his breath. Typical. Kaz would swear up and down he didn’tparticularly care about Inej, only to have a near-heart attack every time hesaw her.
Hecouldn’t bear to watch the awkward conversation that ensued, but soon enoughthe two of them were out of the door, and Nina was swinging it shut behind themwith a grin.
“Idon’t suppose you told either of them that Van Eck’s son is willing to spillwhatever dirt on his father’s colleague that we want?” Jesper asked, amused. “Or that this mission isn’t strictly necessary?”
“Ofcourse not.”
Jesperraised his eyebrows. “Kaz is insistent that there’s nothing between himand Inej. The moment we get back to Ravka, they’re going to get adivorce.”
Ninashrugged. “They’ll change their minds by the end of the evening,” shesaid.
Jesper hadto agree with her.

Tagged by: @radar-technician (You are going to make my heart burst, Mads, you sweet woman. Thank you <3 )
What is your total word count on AO3?
22632 (But I’m updating one of my fics tonight hopefully so it’ll go up roughly 3000)
How often do you write?
I write as often as I can. Working full-time makes it so it isn’t always daily, but I spend my entire day off chained to my laptop to make up for it.
Do you have a routine for writing?
If it’s a new story then I sit down and write an entire outline with chapter by chapter breakdowns and then I make a full playlist of songs that belong to that fic. Once that’s done, I pull up my breakdown in one tab, my designated music playlist in another, and finally the fic itself. Sometimes I deviate from the outline a little bit or I want to listen to something a little different. If it’s late at night or I’m exhausted then I usually have an energy drink of some variety. I don’t like to stop mid scene if I can help it, so much of my fics are done in three sittings. The first draft, the beta reading, and then edits/rewrites.
What’s your favorite kinks/tropes/pairing?
kinks: Oh no, there are so many hhhhh.Tantric sex. Sensory overload. Exhaustion. Praise/worship. Semi-public/Risk of getting caught(don’t @ me). Fingers in mouth???(Also don’t @ me). Dirty talk. Lawyers. Professors. Deliciously sophisticated and in a suit god yes please.
tropes: enemies to friends to lovers/pretend couple/mutual pining/ust/crime aus
pairing: reylo is my #1 right now. But I also adore LoVe (Veronica Mars x Logan Echolls), Kanej (Kaz Brekker x Inej Ghafa from Six of Crows) and HanLeia was my first OTP ever so it holds a special place in my heart.
Do you have a favorite fic of yours?
My favorite fic of mine is one that I haven’t posted anywhere. I spent hours plotting it out and laying everything exactly how I wanted only to decide that maybe I shouldn’t post it because it’s super self indulgent and edgy for no reason. It’s an AU with a detective Rey Kenobi on the hunt for Ben Solo, famed neurologist who worked for a shady pharmaceuticals company and is the man who killed Luke Skywalker. BUT, my eternal WIP aside, I’d have to say that I’m still in love with this ficlet featuring a cape wearing Ben Solo who isn’t Force sensitive and was practically raised by Lando Calrissian(The one true love of my life.) I hope to someday make something bigger out of it. Maybe when I finish my current AU.
Your fic with the most kudos?
My piano AU Found a Flower in a Field of Weeds has the most kudos. It’s my first long fic on AO3 and is still a wip. I’m fairly new to the writing game so none of my works even have 100 kudos LMAO
Anything you don’t like about your writing?
I dislike MOST things about my writing. I used to write a lot more confidently when I was younger, but I had a few people who I cared about a lot tell me that I was a terrible writer and that I should just stick to what I’m good at. I struggle finding balance in keeping my writing from being too wordy/boring. I’ve been told that I suffer from purple prose syndrome and so I’m VERY paranoid about it.
Now something you do like?
I love the process of making a story. The hours I spend plotting out these stories are the best hours of my life. I LOVE reading, so it brings me that most amazing feeling to know that I’m writing something that someone else might want to read. Character growth and exploring AUs are my two favorite things in this whole wide world and I love that I can do that.
Tagging: @hyperphonic (Because Featherweight and all of your lovely ficlets are SO wonderful <3)

got tagged in this game so:
Rules: post the names of all the files in your WIP folder regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them and then post a little snippet of it or tell them something about it! And then tag as many people as you have wips. (You can make your own post or reblog this one!) I have deemed that this isn’t just for writing either. Sketch titles? Comics? DnD campaigns? If you have an unfinished project, it counts!!
All of my WIPs are fics so....here we go. I'm not posting all of them because that would take literally forever (as I detailed here, I have 30+ WIPs in various stages of completion, though I haven't posted anything in years), but here are the majority
Edit: if someone's already asked about them, I've linked the answer.

Thank you sooo much!!! That’s so sweet!
3. In your opinion, what is your best fic?
I just answered this. But I’ll say it again, it’s my recent drabble for Zoyalai based on the song Wasteland, Baby by Hozier. But I have a couple different ones that I love.
4. In your opinion and without looking at any numbers, what’s your most popular fic?
Hmmm….. I think my most popular fic was probably the first one I ever wrote for Kanej (if you’re interested here’s the link!)
7. What’s the fic you most want to continue (unfinished or no)?
I think one that I want to continue is my Zoyalai Detectives au. Every time I write something for it, it just brings me a lot of happiness.

Kanej Modern Occult Detective AU
For the amazing Isabelle @pivoinesaturnienne who requested ‘Inej and Kaz in a modern au pls 👏🏼☺️’
Based roughly on the episode and a half I have seen of Lucifer
1. Kazuya Brekker was born in the 1600′s, the son of a Japanese woman and a Dutch merchant. His mother saw something chaotic in his dark eyes and named him for the peace she hoped he’d acquire instead. Both of his parents died when he was young, and he was primarily raised by his half brother Jordie. They’re living in Amsterdam and hustling at the trade exchange (though Kaz has figured out how to route large chunks of VOC guilden into his personal accounts, but damn those bastards deserve it) when the city is smashed with an epidemic. He dies, and then comes back to life as . ..  something a little more than human.
2. Kaz basically spends the next 400 years as a literal demon- flitting between parallel realms (he’s always felt like a member of two worlds anyway), accumulating ridiculous amounts of cash, and holding a hell of a lot of grudges. For some theological mumbo-jumbo reasons I don’t feel like figuring out, Kaz ends up stranded in modern day New York City, without the benefit of his usual demonic powers.
3. Inej Ghafa runs a private investigation firm in Queens. She takes almost any clients who need her, and resultantly barely makes enough to keep the lights on. (There’s one person who drags her home from the office and makes sure she eats a meal that’s not ramen, stale bagels, or instant coffee, and that’s her room mate Nina.)
She’s Tamil Catholic and actively practicing.
She’s also still super close to her family, and treks out to New Jersey on Sundays to go to Mass and lunch with them.
On the whole she really likes her job. It can be difficult and tiring, and it’s impossible to be an investigator and not constantly, furiously angry with the institutionalised inequalities of the Justice System, but usually she feels like she’s doing something that helps others. Usually.
It’s on a grey Thursday morning she meets Kaz. She doesn’t really know what the GQ model, or whatever the hell he is, is doing in her office, but she’s not exactly going to complain, if only for the pure aesthetic appreciation. Still, she feels acutely aware of the knife she has hidden in her desk drawer.
He stands sort of awkwardly at the door until she gestures for him to sit down.
“I can’t pay a temp right now,” she says evenly, even though this guy looks more one of the Wall Street up-and-comings whose corporation deals her eviction notice than the kind of people who usually visit her office, with the Tamil-language signs out front and cigarrettes-and-old-coffee smell that’s been stuck to the place since before she got here.
He leans across the table. He has very dark eyes and God probably drew the lines of his face with a ruler. Inej doesn’t know much about men’s fashion but the textured, grey wool coat he’s wearing looks like it cost more than several months rent for her. He has a raspy-but-smooth voice (like, a whiskey commercial level raspy-but-smooth voice) in an accent she can’t quite place.
“Luckily for you, my services are free.”
(Later, watching the glittering, flickering gold map of New York- “New Amsterdam,” as it always will be to him, although maybe he just likes having “dam” in the name- he can’t stop thinking about her. Why did he choose her struggling PI office as the base of his mandatory redemption? He doesn’t know. All he knows is that he feels like he’s been pulled underwater without knowing it and he can no longer see the surface.)
4. He may have lost most of his powers but he does manage to tap into his accounts, which are demonstrative of four hundred years of investing, schmoozing, and outright stealing. He’s always been better at aquiring money than spending it- that always felt like some unbreachable loss of control- so he decides to finally dish some out. Her rent is paid off for the next six months and replaces the tea kettle that barely works with a fancy Italian model. one day when they need to go on a bit of a road trip upstate to find a cheating husband, he greets her outside the office with a to go cup of that really fancy hot chocolate (house made marshmallows and all) and a ‘60′s Chevrolet Corvette.
(He keeps the car. it’s a nice car, timeless and simultaneously restrained and vulgar. His style.)
Inej, for the most part, is super worried that he’s connected to some kind of organised crime. It’s Nina who chills her out a bit, using the talent she’s always had for knowing when people are telling the truth or not. (It’s in their heartbeats.) And she knows that Kaz in general is shady AF, but she also knows he won’t bring any harm to Inej.
5. TOGETHER!!! THEY! SOLVE! CRIMES!!! AND BRING JUSTICE TO NEW YORK! Like honestly Dream Team material right here. They solve a mixture of regular and occult cases. Inej is sharp, focused, and hyperaware of details, not to mention extremely driven in her mission. Kaz is in general utterly ruthless, but at least now it’s directed to a good cause.
There’s an incident where they have to infiltrate a shady party to find evidence against Jan Van Eyck, a particularly corrupt developer. This of course involves wearing formalwear and going undercover as Dr. and Mr. Selvaraj (Of course!). And it involves Inej wearing a silver-white gown with embroidered flowers and a pearl headband with her long, straight hair down around her bare shoulders.
(Needless to say, she turns a lot of heads.)
Afterwards, with the ballroom up in flames and Van Eyck in handcuffs, Kaz and Inej stand outside the convention centre. Inej is swapping into a pair of flats, heels dangling from one hand.
“So.” She says.
“So.” He repeats.
“My room mate and I are working our way through trying every takeout option with a delivery charge of less than a dollar in the vicinity of our apartment.”
“Umm hmmm.”
Kaz tried to focus on the holding laundromat sign across the street instead of Inej, how luminous she was in the reflections of the flashing red-and-blue squad car lights.
“And we’re halfway through the new season of Peaky Blinders. And we won’t rewind to the beginning.”
“Uh huh.” It took a lot of mental concentration for him to read out “M-O-E’S P-A-Y A-N-D W-A-S-H” instead of focusing on her, the flutter of her eyelashes and the way she was biting her lip right now, like she usually did when considering a decision.
“So, you could, you know, join us.”
“Join you?”
“Me and Nina. Watching Peaky Blinders. Probably going to order in adobo and lechon, because Nina’s finishing a double shift and she says she needs deep fried pork to recuperate.” It was going out on a limb, and Inej felt winded after putting the option in the open, like she’d run a race in her ballgown.
“Me? Go with . .. you? To your apartment?”
Goddamn it. Kaz knew from the way his face was burning up and the way she was smiling that his face blushing something mighty.
“Yeah, genius. Come back with me.”
He offered his arm like a true gentleman as they exited the scene of (not really their) crime.
