Magical Girl Site Review
Tumblr media
Hello!
In the spirit of the anime (which is what I'll be talking about since I just started the manga), I'll start with some trigger warnings. This anime has TWs for: bullying, family-based abuse, murder, blood, gore, and general nastiness. You might want a good stomach to handle it. I'll be keeping it almost 100% spoiler-free, and I'll warn you clearly if something is a spoiler. There's a TL;DR at the end, too :)
I went into this anime so blindly that I didn't even bother with the opening for the first 7 episodes (which I actually recommend). I'd only heard it was "trauma/gorebait" and "really bad," so I expected absolutely nothing. It surprised me for the better, although I can't say it's a perfect show, or recommend it freely. It's got a very specific target demographic, which I happen to fit. You'll fit it too if you like Magical Girl Raising Project (the light novels especially) or like Madoka but tend to darker types of media. Or if you're traumatized and indulge in fucked up content to cope. Overall, if you don't mind messed up concepts being thrown at you on a twice-episodic basis minimum, you'll be mint. I love horrible things, so it's fine by me.
I won't go episode by episode, although there's only 12, but I'll say the first one was hard to watch. I see why people find Aya Asagiri a whiny MC, but I just felt really, really bad for her. The situations she has to go through have and continue to happen to people, and it's horrifying to think about. That goes for most of the girls' backstories. When the plot starts going (I remember it happening in episode 3), things quickly pick up, and you're thrown in a strange world where the show will constantly ask "wouldn't it be funny if..." and then executes its magic. You could absolutely make a drinking game out of it, it happens like three times per episode, and sincerely once you're willing to suspend your disbelief (which I'll admit, does come easy to me), it's incredibly fun.
The plot feels like a telenovella, in the best way, where the magical girls are directly involved. The concept of the show is also great, and many have given it its due respect, even if they disagree with the execution: a strange site that gives magical weapons/trinkets ("sticks" is a stupid word) to miserable girls to feed off their despair. I also thoroughly enjoyed how clear the toll for using the weapons was, although I wish it would have been a little more consistent, although it's consistent enough, and it does up the stakes.
Character-wise, I was happily surprised once again. Aya gets built up slowly but surely: she's more than a random punching bag, unfortunate soul. It was heartwarming to see Tsuyuno and her bond, and I loved how the show let them have their genuine emotional moments without undercutting them with a joke or with some shock gore. Before you comment THE controversial spoiler, I will get to it at the end of the review, so I urge you to be patient.
I also deeply enjoyed the other magical girls. Nijimin was perfectly introduced, and I loved her instantly, as well as Kosame Amagai and her group. Something else to note: canon trans girl character (Kiyoharu Suirenji)! I saw someone online saying the show was transphobic. As someone who is trans himself, I believe that you must not have actually watched the show if you say such things. Her character, although it didn't get much screentime, is really fun, and her interactions with others were a blast to watch.
I have to confess: I love Kaname Asagiri, or "the brother" as I called him for most of the show. He's Light Yagami if Light Yagami were more of an abuser, and also didn't need the Death Note to go batshit. I was pleasantly surprised when they gave him screentime. He's a horrible, delusional, narcissistic human being, yes, but he is hilarious and only becomes more so as the show progresses. Not only that, his japanese VA gives it his all: he clearly cares about his performance, and he stands out as one of the best VAs of the show.
Speaking of VAs, I must mention Nana's (or, Mx. "Poor unfortunate souls" site admin). He immediately stood out to me since I recognized him from voicing Mayuri in Bleach, and he barely changes his delivery here: it works wonders. Every line he delivers is perfect, unsettling, scarily playful, and terrifying. I replayed scenes just to hear him say the lines again. This VA is one of the reasons I loved the show.
I enjoyed the show's ending, and I was flabbergasted when (minor spoiler) they genuinely played a beach episode seriously, but I can't even pretend to be mad with how much enjoyment I got out of it. I won't comment further to keep it spoiler free.
The writing of the show is not the best. There's a lot of exposition dumps, the dialogue doesn't stand out positively most of the time (the contrary), and the "wouldn't it be funny if" twists could get tiring. They didn't for me, but I'm biased, and I see how they could be annoying. Despite this, the concepts, drama, and characters are enough to keep the show afloat for me. And while it is very edgy and bleak, I appreciated that they know when and how to tone it down, prioritizing the emotions of the scene over pointless shock value.
I've also seen people complain about the designs of the magical girls, which, again, is a very fair criticism. Clothing wise, they're bland, and the "sticks" look silly. The eyes changing is a nice detail, as well as the little sign they get, but that's about it. Could be better. I fully believe Magical Girl Raising Project has the better designs by far: I find almost all of them if not all to be outstanding and gorgeous (again: read the light novels, please, the anime does not do any of it justice!).
The powers were also quite bland, and except for Nijimin's, none stood out to me. They were all pretty eh, but I didn't really mind. Once again, MGRP has the superior powers by far (much more creative in idea and in execution).
Lastly, a few words on the tone. While I know people find it too bleak to care (and I understand why), after the first two episodes, I had a fucking blast. It's a surprisingly funny show. Also important is the fact that for a while, you have to treat it like a horror show where magical girls are incidental, not crucial. This changes later on, but is worth noting. While things are dark and bleak, the humor and suspense make it worth it for me. And no, I didn't mind the really dark comic relief on the brother. He is pathetic, and I like making fun of him.
Now, THE manga spoiler everyone brings up (this is not in the anime!). Yes, apparently Aya and Tsuyuno are long lost twin sisters, and apparently they continue being girlfriends after realizing this. My opinion on it: The twist is cheap, but I don't give a fuck about the incest. It makes sense for characters as damaged as they are to continue together after realizing. I'm not scared off by fictional incest. You do you, though.
-
So, TL;DR (finally!): If you like dark magical girls, traumatic backstories, have a strong stomach for depressing shit, and can put up with its very real cons, this show is very worth it. I watched it in two night sessions, and it got me genuinely excited. I can't recommend it easily, but if it appeals to you in any way, I think it's worth giving a try.
Thanks for reading this far into the post! Please tell me what you thought of the show or my opinions of it!
Much love,
Bruno.

Darkness Reborn ~ Origins of the Ink Demon Final Chapter : Final Struggle (2/6) ~
Me : You've waited all of my scripts in the past year and now the moment you've been waiting for! And get ready for the newest hottest script that is...So here we go!
[Leo Stenbuck (Break Out) - Norihiko Hibino]
"Tokyo, Four years in the future"
(we show a young girl running that appears to be Aya Asagiri)
Aya Asagiri : *panting* What is happening with this planet!? What's becoming of my misfortuned life? How can I not see this!?
*Flashback*
Aya Asagiri : No! stop! I don't want a miserable life like this!
Kaname Asagiri : Miserable life, you say? Well guess what, I got a 98 on my test and I had to get many punches from your dad! Torturing and tormenting you would allow you to make yourself a human target.
Tsuyuno : You stubborn fools! Do you realize what you have been doing!? Aya had nothing wrong do with her life, she's only 14 and heartless humans like you are ruining everything for her and me!
Aya : Please, I just didn't want this to happen! I...I blame the author for that!
Kaname Asagiri : You couldn't give two sh*ts about you Aya! I've been punched in the stomach three times a day! And do you know what it's like to be a bat-sh*t crazy guy who likes to torture innocent girls!? You have a great life about your experience in Real World AU, Aya. What will it be? Will you beat us heartless humans that wanted to torment you very badly or will you go back in time to fix the mistakes in the past?
(flashback ends with Aya still running)
Kaname Asagiri : (Voiced heard) Well, I guess that the author had to make you suffer. If we're gone and the author's gone, they won't able to make another Magical Girl story like you anymore. How satisfying.
Aya Asagiri : *panting* ...I need a place to find myself to fix this cursed mistake. Where do I needed to my life to resonated with everyone? But why...? (sits down with depression) Why everything?
*images flashing*
[people yelling indistinctly]
Kaname Asagiri : (voice heard) No! Not you! Why me!? WHY DID I DESERVE THIS!?! HUAAAAAAAHHHH!
Tsuyuno : Not the heartless again!
Sarina : OH GOD! NOOOOOO!!!
*flashes to another Flashback*
Tsuyuno : Aya! What are we going to do!? Aya!
Sarina : SOMEONE PLEASE! JUST STOP THIS ALREADY!!! THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT, AYA!!!
Rina : Help, Aya!
Nijimi : What are you waiting for, slowpoke!? Hurry up and save us!
Sarina : I SWEAR TO GOD I WILL KILL YOU!!!
Tsuyuno : What are you going to do, Aya!? WHAT. ARE. YOU. GOING TO DO!?!
Beast Bendy : Too Late!
(Darkside pushes a big dominoe made of ink, causing it to fall slowly on the group)
Tsuyuno : AYAAAAAA!!!
*DBZ SFX : BOOM*
Tsuyuno : NOOOOOOO!!!
Aya Asagiri : (gasping and them screams in horror) AAAAAAAAAHHH!!!
*flashback ends*
Aya Asagiri : Damn it! It's all my fault! No, it's all our fault that we caused all of this! Why did it started out like this!? I need to get back to the past to fix my mistake! I only needed time to fix everything right for me. What to do? What to do? (get ups and starts running again) *panting* There's gotta be a way to go back in time to fix everything right for me! If the story of me never happened I would never have a miserable life! I need a way to fix it now! Unless...There is a way! I know how!
(Neoshadows appears)
Aya Asagiri : AAAH!! No! Not like this again! Please, don't hurt me! (uses gun to shoot at the Heartless, but didn't work on them)
Neoshadows : (look at each other) HAHAHAHAHA!
Aya Asagiri : Huh? (shoots at them again, but still didn't work on them) Why aren't you going away!?
Neoshadow 1 : Hahahaha! Foolish young girl, that kiddie toy doesn't work on us! *GUNSHOT X2*
(Neoshadows dies and vanishes)
Aya Asagiri : Wha...Who...?
Homura Akemi :Hey there. Looks like you needed my help!
Aya Asagiri : Are you really a Magical...
Neoshadow : Find them! Get those kids! Don't let them escape!
Homura Akemi : Come, follow me! There isn't much time life!
Aya Asagiri : Right! (two starts running)
Neoshadows : (yelling indistinctly)
Neoshadow : Where are those girls!? Where are they!? They have to be somewhere in the city!
Homura Akemi : Over here! (throws a flash bomb)
*BOOM*
Neoshadow : AAAAHH! THE LIGHT! (Neoshadows vanishes)
Homura Akemi : That should buy us some time.
Tsuyuno : Aya! Don't you leave me just yet! I'm not going to die without you! I needed to live to fix your miserable life's mistakes!
Homura Akemi : Hang tight, everyone! We're going back about four years ago and to fix this mess that ever caused! (Chaos Emeralds glowing) Chaos...CONTROL!!!
*Sonic/Shadow SFX : Chaos Control*
"New Era...Four years ago."
Maka Albarn : So...All this time, I had two dads, one uncle, one sister, and one human mother?
Lord Phanto III : True. It was I who gave you my blood to adon the secrets of the Blood Magic arts. Makoto and your son have discovered that Blood Magic was invented by both us and witches since planetary conquest in the Solar System.
Soul Evans : Say what? (To Spirit Albarn) Mr. Albarn, why didn't you tell me the truth! Why didn't you tell that Maka's family were not just humans, but aliens that arrived on earth in the past?
Spirit Albarn : Okay! Okay! The truth is...I lied. I thought that I was to be created to defend humanity, but I wasn't. I was still kid in the past to cover the truth from you and I did. I'm sorry Maka. But I...
Maka Albarn : Look! It's okay, papa! Look! I was betrayed by humanity! Patty Thompson framed for it! But there's one explanation that I'm needed to hear about this one. Is Soul Evans really a bone that becomes a scythe?
Lord Phanto III : (chuckles) It's true. The Demon Scythe you wield with is a bone from soryu, the Azure Dragon and one of the four guardians that protected this planet from destruction!
Maka Albarn : !?
Soul Evans : I'm a what?
Lord Phanto III : And don't forget. It was I who created you for the Evans Family in Texas, you were the finest of all! That's right! (summons the Demon Scythe) The one who created this iconic scythe, It was me!
Me : (gives paper to Lord Phanto III)
Lord Phanto III : Oh, minor mistake. Thank you for pointing that out. The one who created this Demon Scyhe, it was our race that developed, which passed hand to hand from Jupiter , to, Mars and then to you on Earth. I upgraded it myself to make it look like it.
[The Real Truth - Yutaka Minobe]
Maka Albarn : So that means...
*images flashing*
Maka Albarn : Now I remember! You created the scythe that I wielded all those years ago! No, my people created it. The Scythe was originally a weapon used by the Phantonians! It turns out that demon scythe that I wield was actually made from Mars--No, Jupiter! But why, daddy!? Why on earth would you do it!?
Lord Phanto III : To tell you the truth, There is no world of Soul Eater, you fool! Darkside Death has been combing both Shinra and your Influence with the powers of Hearts and Souls. He has been allegedly stealing hearts and souls from the innocence that witches were in order to gain power for himself and keep the world in the palm of his hands. Or should I say, the "Wrong" hands?
Soul Evans : You mean the demon scythe that I was, was originally some kind of blade or something? a sword perhaps?
Lord Phanto III : Rhetorical, Mr. Evans, the scythe that you are...(converts the sychte into a huge-ass sword) is originally a sword.
Maka Albarn : The wrong hands. I knew him all along, father.
Moirai Albarn : Indeed, father. Maka Albarn didn't knew that she directly under the influence of Shinra Himself and now her influence is beginning to spread even further!
Maka Albarn : What!? Now you're saying that Darkside Death is going to use my influence to combine with Shinra's! I should've known we've been duped from the start! Got it all figured it out, I know what to do! I am Maka Albarn, a hero that has a heart and soul! Forget the world of Soul Eater, I don't have to be the story of three, I wanted to be a story for each and everyone! Father! If you're willingly helping out others! So listen up! I may not have my story concluded cause that's why I'm going to expand it! Just to end this once for and all!
Seto : Leave it to me!
[SA2 Advertist C+B (Super Sonic Theme) - Jun Senoue]
Maka Albarn : Yeah! I'll be the hero of the story that's gonna last forever! I know why, I wanna help the queen of the Ink Demons to give her one last redemption. But first I need to find Shinra so I can fix this mistake once and for all! I don't need Crona or the world to show them the courage that was I given, all I needed was valor that will prove to them I am the strongest hero and that's why Shinra made me do it!
Soul Evans : Then LET'S GET MOVING!
"Meanwhile..."
Shinra : ...
Saber/Arthur : So...You're ready for this?
Shinra : ...Oh yeah, I'm ready. I'm here to fix my biggest that I have ever caused, I'm going to put an end this foolishness that I made once and for all! I know how to clean up their act! I'm becoming a hero once more! I Shinra the Devil Chaos will be returning myself as Shinra Kusakabe, the hero who went from Zero to Hero! And I'm not going down without a fight. Maka Albarn, Tsugumi, Shotaro, Here I come, to have a battle of the four heroes! This is the moment that I have been waiting for! I'll use the power of the Chaos Emeralds one last time! Devil Chaos...(converts to Devil Chaos) Do your thing! I'm gonna put an end to the traitor once and for all! That is why I shall make them pay!

Sports Cap — The Breathing Bubble was given to her by Kosame Amagai when she began to lose consciousness due to the lack of oxygen in the upper atmosphere of the planet, The Sports Cap Stick gives her the ability to create an oxygen bubble around her head, allowing her to breath in such locations devoid of air.

Kaname Asagiri Analysis
Tumblr media
(THIS IS OUTDATED AND NEEDS AN UPDATE, i don’t stand by some of the vocabulary i used here and i know i could write this better as an adult, please take it with a grain of salt)
Hi there, I'm Otori!
Here we go with another analysis, this time about Kaname Asagiri from Mahou Shoujo Site.
This will obviously have spoilers of both the anime and the manga, so please read/watch it fully before proceeding.
I will begin saying that Kaname is not only my favorite Mahou Shoujo Site character, but also one of my all time favorite characters as well. Still, I don’t even like Mahou Shoujo Site as a whole, but I found him to be very interesting and well-written, so here we go.
The structure for the analysis will be:
 Character overview
Trajectory & development through the manga
Additional info and symbolisms
1. Character overview
Tumblr media
I would like to talk about the general aspects of him first. The most obvious thing about Kaname is that he is a sociopath, which is, to be short, someone who tends to disrespect others and has little to no empathy. Statistics show that one of every 25 people is a sociopath, and it’s a mental illness also called antisocial personality disorder. They usually hurt people or animals, are unfair and don't respect other people. So, great. The first thing to point out about the character is that he is mentally ill. Looks good.
Moving to the next point, another main characteristic in Kaname is him being misanthropic. Misanthropy is a general hatred and distrust towards humans. This plus Kaname being a sociopath gives up the perfect image of who he is. But he is much more than an mentally ill boy, and I want to prove that and make people understand this character. Of course, I will never try to justify his actions. I will just try to give you a different point of view so that you can get to know him better.
Lastly, I'd also like to point something about Kaname being portrayed as one of the main antagonists. In the wikia, for most part of the manga he was labeled as the main antagonist, even if later this was changed by the admins. Which is interesting considering that he’s nor a Site Admin nor a ‘’mahou shoujo’’, and he ends up helping the main characters. In fact, at the beginning I completely thought that Kaname would be a secondary character, whose purpose was to serve as one of the reasons for Aya’s misfortune. I think that Kaname being first shown as a ''secondary character'' made people be quick to judge and hate him.
2. Trajectory & development through the manga
Tumblr media
From the beginning we see that Kaname looks and behaves like a kind, polite boy, which is obviously a facade. He is in fact manipulative and cruel, and he hits and belittles his sister Aya every day. Why does he beat her? Well, it's said that it's to relieve stress, but I'm pretty sure that this isn't the only reason. There are a million other ways to relieve stress other than this one. First of all, Aya is weak and can't speak up. Even if she did, her parents wouldn't believe her, since Kaname is a cheerful and good boy who obeys all of their orders with a smile; the complete opposite from her, in the outside at least. Kaname tends to feel superior to others and enjoys that superiority, so beating someone like Aya boosts this. This is also the main reason behind general real life bullying too, and Kaname's treatment towards Aya is pretty similar. Also, since Kaname works hard and studies every day, while Aya doesn't, he thinks that it is unfair and that she has to pay for it enduring the pain. While he is totally wrong at this, I can understand his feelings because he works very hard and gets beaten because of a 98 in an exam, while no matter what Aya does or where she is her parents don't care. It IS unfair, for both of them, and the amount of pressure Kaname goes through is by no means normal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
At chapter 12 we get a bit more of introspection in Kaname’s mentality. Basically, more proof of his misanthropy and sociopathy, combined with his narcissism. These three make an awful combination, honestly. Kaname Asagiri is elite, and he's praised constantly by teachers, family and classmates, and he truly believes himself to be superior to all of them by far. To the point of coming to the conclusion that everyone else is worthless.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, what is Kaname’s conception of ‘’worth’’? Meaning, what makes a person worthy by his standards? What qualities does a person need to not be ‘’shit’’?
Tumblr media
Incompetent and dumb people are shit for him, so people who aren’t intelligent are out. Which is a rather common idea, especially for (obviously) smart people, including historical figures, and especifically many ancient greek philosophers.
People who are shallow on the inside and superficial people are also shit for him — which is interesting because in the Mahou Shoujo Site universe there’s a lot of people like this. No need to even mention Nijimi, but their city seems to be full of this kind of people.
Tumblr media
Weak, cowardly and unrealistic people are shit too, which adds weight to his hate against Aya. His sister has all of those characteristics, so even if Kaname’s abuse is of course too much, his hate for her makes sense with his general mentality.
However, some pages later all of this is reduced to a single sentence.
Tumblr media
All of the qualities that defines somebody’s worth for Kaname are not important anymore when it comes to his mother: He loves her because she’s nice to him. This quote is so simple and almost child-like that it makes a great gap with the rest of Kaname’s inner monologue in the chapter, but not without a reason. Despite of Kaname's way of thinking, the only thing he truly needed was someone to be nice and understanding to him, and that person was his mother. She is the only truly gentle person with him, who doesn't love him by his looks or intelligence but for who he is, and Kaname is grateful for this and likes her back. Plus, he knows that she's a victim to his father's abuse too, so he might feel empathy towards her in this regard.
Moving on, let’s go to Nijimi and their relationship. Nijimi is 14 years old and, being so young, she would obviously fall for a handsome, older boy. However, Nijimi is not a perfect character like the fandom likes to think. She is mentally ill too, and she explicitly said that she wanted to kill Aya quite a few times for hiding things from her. Yes, she had good reasons, but that doesn't change the fact that Nijimi is insane too and not perfect and pure. And thinking objectively it's logical that Kaname would take profit of her. I mean, Nijimi is crazy for him, would do anything for him, and from his eyes she’s just a dumb teenager who can easily be manipulated. It was intelligent from Kaname to use her considering his goals.
Tumblr media
Next, let’s go to Naoto's death. This time, Kaname only defended himself, as Naoto wanted to kill him in the first place, and he took the chance to test his new powers too. Yes, maybe Kaname went overboard and this chapter shows just how crazy he is, but it is logical, and he had already had many thoughts of wanting Naoto to die, since by his standards, Naoto is a completely worthless person.
Tumblr media
Kaname doesn't feel remorse at all after killing Naoto. This is a typical feature of sociopaths, and it also makes sense because Naoto is a worthless person by his standards.
Tumblr media
Aya, after seeing how Kaname ordered Naoto to die, tried to hide it because she didn't want her friends to kill Kaname. Honestly I know that Aya is like this, but it’s so confusing. Even if he is her brother, he is a really horrible person who hurts her and threatens her day after day. Wanting to protect him is stupid. Later we learn that Aya was aware of Kaname’s stress and the fact that he received abuse from his father, which only makes it more weird. Think about it: she knew about this and yet never tried to help Kaname, only quietly receiving the abuse. And yet she tries to help Kaname here? And yet, in chapter 40, she says that she will never forgive him, when it was pretty obvious that he wasn’t going to use the powers for a good cause. Pretty inconsistent of her, but we will leave it aside, as we will talk more about it later.
Tumblr media
Moving to the part in which Kaname shows his true self to Nijimi for the first time, in her apartment (chapter 259. Even after Kaname told Nijimi that he was only using her, Nijimi tried to deny by all ways that he didn't need her anymore and say that she would do anything for him. Knowing that he manipulated her and sealing her later fate.
Also I'd like to point how Kaname doesn't care about losing lifespan because of the stick. First of all, Kaname is not happy. He never is truly happy through the entire manga except from the last chapter, but he thinks that gaining power and controlling others can become happiness. Because the control his father puts on him brings him unhappiness, he believes that if he is the one in control instead, he would be happy. And in fact, the scenes where he laughs most and seems to have more fun is when he is controlling someone through the stick.
Let's talk about Nijimi's death. Kaname first of all tries to gather all the sticks. He wants even more power. When Kiyoharu explains to Nijimi all about Kaname, she decides to kill him. She doesn't even listen to Kiyoharu anymore since the anger took over her senses, which is absolutely logical but also the reason why she died. And again, Kaname defended himself when killing her. Yes, there where a million other ways to stop her, but he was clearly surprised and reacted as he could in the little time he had. Kaname didn't even know all about the Mahou Shoujo Site yet so maybe he didn't want to risk his life in learning if Nijimi had a way to kill him or not.
Just before dying, Nijimi attacked Kaname one last time, cutting his throat (honestly the fact that Kaname survived to that makes me lose my mind but this is Mahou Shoujo Site we're talking about). This has many interpretations and maybe it doesn't hold any deep meaning but I like to think that it does. Of course, she was trying to aim a fatal blow so aimed for his neck, but it also makes me think that  Nijimi wanted to shut Kaname for good. She didn't want to hear those words coming out from his mouth; to aknowledge that she had been used by him.
For Kaname, not being able to speak becomes a real shock and he looses his cool completely. He hates losing his freedom and this is shown through all the manga. Because of his father, he can't stand being controlled and he hates to be deprived from anything. His thinkings about being God also intensify here. Him believing that he's God is honestly a very interesting feature from my point of view, showing that he really wants and does feel superior from others.
Next is Kaname and Misumi arc. Misumi raped Kaname just because he likes to rape younger boys. That's all the reason or explanation we got, and he didn't just rape him. He confined him, treated him poorly, to the point that Kaname got to call him Master and treat him with respect. The same Kaname who thought of himself as a God. The same Kaname who called all the rest of humans meats with no brains. To see such an arrogant and prideful character in such a pitiful and horrible state is really shocking. Not even Kaname deserved this.
But this is Kaname we are talking about, and there's no way he would just accept the situation and follow Misumi's will like that. Maybe he was waiting for the best chance but after some time, he finally decides to kill Misumi and steals his fork to attack him. Being able to want to break free even in that situation is frankly incredible and his will to survive while also taking revenge is amazing. He was even able to think about it thoroughly and come with a plan, which little people could do if they were in his place.
Tumblr media
After finally escaping and going to the hospital, Kaname starts behaving strangely docile due to the traumatic experience, and calm Kaname acts, even when talking to Nana and getting angry he doesn't shout or anything, which he would do in normal conditions.
What’s the first thing Kaname gets once he goes home? His father saying that he must study hard to recover the lost time. This shows just how obsessed his dad is with Kaname making it to the Tokyo university because it's his frustrated dream.  Kaname warns him about someone being after them and the father hits him on the face when Kaname literally has a bullet injury. It’s so messed up.
Tumblr media
The admins enter the home and what does Kaname's father do? Order him to study. Priorities are priorities: studying goes first, living is second. And as soon as Kaname is free from his control, he punches him to death, which with all honestity is understandable.
Tumblr media
Later, when Aya tells him that she endured the pain so that Kaname wouldn't mentally break, Kaname yells to her saying that he doesn't want any pity. He probably felt like she was looking down on him, and can't understand why she would protect him with all the things he did. This is where Kaname starts truly developing as a character.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There’s many scenes in which we can appreciate Kaname’s development from there on. The next time Asahi tells Kaname to shut up, he doesn't talk back or punch her, which is something he'd totally do (and actually did) a couple episodes before. This is already a change. Maybe not a big one, but it's a first step.
When his mother becomes sperm (haha) he totally loses it and starts yelling. He shows anger instead of sadness because that's just how he is used to show his emotions, because he’s never been allowed to show his emotions in any other way, and also because he couldn’t stand looking vulnerable. His mother was the only person who treated him truly well and the only person he could love.
Kaname cooperates with Aya's friends and Nana to recover his mother and save the world, even lying to give Aya an opportunity to use her stick. This is too a very big change on his character. He is willing to lose all of his lifespan to save his mother and the world, and even casted a spell on Aya so that she couldn't end up being the only one unhappy.
And finally, jumping tothe final episode, Kaname's development is fully shown. He shows his very first true smile, his very first free and happy expression.
Tumblr media
He goes to the beach with Aya and her friends. He smiles to his parents. His father tells him to relax out there and Kaname replies with a smile. He doesn't hide his emotions anymore. He doesn't lie. He doesn't smile fake nor obey to everything his father says.  Usually, characters like him end up either dead or shown as the worst people ever, but Kaname doesn't. He has a proper development and has the final he deserves.
In the anime is much harder to come to like him, which is normal since in the anime we don't see so much of his backstory and his development, while in the manga we got lots of it.
3. Additional info and symbolisms
Tumblr media
I want to talk about is Kaname's name. Asagiri means morning fog/mist. Mist (霧) is supposed to cover or hide something, in this case the morning (朝). Every morning is said to be a new beginning and a new hope. Morning depicts brightness, freshness, new beginning, new opportunities, freedom, new hope and transformations. This is exactly what Kaname needed through all his life, and didn't have. He didn't have freedom, he didn't have brightness. Anyhow, morning is meant to represent something bright and light, totally contrary to Kaname. That's why the mist in his name hides the brightness. Because there is some brightness inside Kaname as shown in the end of the manga, but it remains hidden due to his father's abuse.
Later, it's revealed that Aya isn't Kaname's real sister, and thus her real family name isn't Asagiri. Aya in this part of the manga, after learning that Yatsumura is her sister and getting over her death, crying for the first time since long, seems to fit the meaning of morning and a new beginning. That's why she isn't an Asagiri; she can't allow mist (Kaname and her bullies in her case) to hide her morning, and thus forgives Kaname and Sarina to find her path and hope.
In the end of the manga, when Kaname finally gets rid of his problems and makes friends and also smiles to his family, the Asagiri name in the door frame is zoomed. And in this scene it's morning and the sun shines upon Kaname. This definitely means something, as Kaname finally found his new opportunity and freedom.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kaname, on the other hand, means keystone. He is the center; the mechanism that makes it all work. Just as he saved the world in the end and how he is the main "antagonist". Kaname can also mean need, main point or pivot. Kaname may not be the main character nor the main villain, but he is a vital character for the plot.
Next, spades, which are the symbols of Nijimi’s stick, represent nobility and are a symbol of elite— that elite which Kaname is, and that superiority he wants to achieve.
And lastly, the color blue that is very representative of Kaname, symbolizes power, freedom and elegance. Power and freedom are characteristics that really fit him and his whole character. The power and freedom he wanted but that was forbidden for him, until the end in which he could finally find it.
Thanks for reading!

My Review of Magical Girl Site
Tumblr media
How did I get into this anime? I…huh…Good question! I don’t recall. Probably some other anime reviewers mentioned it and I put it on the Amazon/Netflix list hoping I won’t have to watch it any time soon. Two years later and here we are!
Tumblr media
Aya Asagiri’s life is a living hell. She is constantly bullied at school and no one does a thing to stop it. Her teachers don’t care about her well-being. Her father barely notices she exists. And to top it off, her brother beats the crap out of her just for him to relieve stress! Is it any wonder that she wants to commit suicide? One night, her computer mysteriously turns on to a website, promoting Aya to become a magical girl. She brushed it off and thought nothing of it…
That is until the next morning when she finds a note and a gun in her shoe locker. After being tortured by her bullies and almost raped, she finds herself at the end of her ropes and pulls out the mysterious gun. When she pulled the trigger, her bullies disappeared. Turns out, the targets are transported to another place. In the case of some of her bullies, they were transported to in front of a moving train.
Tumblr media
Karma, bitches!
It’s unknown why Aya was specifically chosen to become a magical girl, but fellow magical girl Yatsumura feels she could use Aya’s magic to combat a looming threat to other magical girls. But they must not overuse their magic, otherwise they will die.
BETWEEN THE SUB AND THE DUB: As of this moment, this anime seems to be in the capable hands of Amazon Prime. And we all know how well they treat animes, right?! Hahaha! Funny! Anyways, don’t expect a dub! The cast seems to be comprised of many female seiyuus I’m not particularly familiar with. I mean with the exception of Aina Suzuki, I hear her sounds every day thanks to the Love Live game apps! Add to that the creepy, raspy voice of Frieza playing the site administrator! One voice actor however I heard the second he let out a creepy, hygena-like laugh, I knew exactly who this crazy bastard was! Nobuhiko Okamoto plays a great psychopath. Here’s what you might recognize these folks from.
*Aya is played by Yuuko Oono
*Yatsumura is played by Himika Akaneya
*Sarina is played by Haruka Yamazaki (known for Ruka on Hayate the Combat Butler, Mero on Monster Musume, Aika on High School DxD, and Natsumi on Danganronpa 3)
*Nijimi is played by Yuu Serizawa (known for Shera on How Not to Summon a Demon Lord)
*Shioi is played by Aina Suzuki (known for Mari on Love Live Sunshine)
AUTOMATICLY THROWN ON DISLIKED LIST: Okay children, who automatically ends up on my hate list for life?
Tumblr media
Fuckers who commit rape and fuckers who kill animals for fun!
Damn right! Give this anime some credit for not showing Aya’s bullies throwing a cat in front of a moving train. If this were 10 years ago, they probably would have animated it and I would have been puking afterward. I’m not sure which of Aya’s bullies threw a cat in front of a moving train, but for the time being, I’m throwing them all on the list.
And while I’m here, Sarina! She was like the ring-leader in the bullying of Aya. I’m almost certain she’s the bitch that killed the stray cat but I have no proof of that. With my history with horrible people like that, I have no sympathy for bullies in the slightest and feel she got what was coming to her. Bitch, you got that big, ugly scar on your neck for a reason. You got what was coming!
Tumblr media
DEFINITELY BELONGS IN DISLIKE HISTORY: Now that I got the usual gripe off my chest, gotta add Aya’s onii-chan, Kaname! Sweet merciful crap, do I love hearing Nobuhiko Okamoto play a psychopath, but this is going way too far. And Kaname is just irredeemable! He has this complex that makes him think he’s on God-tier and everyone else is beneth him. Now I do have to hate Kaname and Aya’s father for placing this kind of pressure on Kaname and beating the shit out of him if he gets bad grades. But good fuck, this guy just pushes past the line of no return when he tries to manipulate little girls, steal their power, and lose control. And this wasn’t like he had no control over his own body and wants to stop this from happening! Kaname meant every thing he did to his sister and her friends. OH…and that one guy he forced to off himself! I just can’t even with this guy!
Tumblr media
SHIPPING: I know a lot of people ship the hell out of Aya and Yatsumura and yeah, I can see that and I would ship them too. But for reals, I just want these two girls to live a life of peace together for as long as they’re around. For fuck’s sake, did you see the shit they put up with in their lives? Aya was bullied relentlessly at home and school. Yatsumura watched her whole family be slaughtered by a creep. These girls deserve some sort of peace! I know this is the shipping category, but I felt the need to say this.
Tumblr media
STICKS: Okay anime, what are you doing? Aya uses a magical gun! Sarina uses a magical yo-yo! Nijimi uses magical panties (insert immature laugh here)! Yatsumura uses a magical remote! How hard is it to have them say that! And I probably shouldn’t put blame on the anime and holler at the manga! But calling magical items “Sticks”, that feels…I don’t want to say stupid, but I can’t think of any other word to go along with that. I just feel like the manga was on some deadline and they were frantically finishing what to call their magical items and just went “FUCK IT, IT’S STICKS”.
Tumblr media
COULD HAVE FOOLED ME: In the “Could have fooled me” category we have a boy who identifies as a girl magical girl! Man, 2018 definitely was the progressive AF year! I mean, we had Lily from Zombieland Saga, we had the girls who transformed into magical buff men in Magical Girl Ore, and now THIS! So we have Kiyo! An openly transgendered magical girl that’s not a token joke! Okay, well done guys! Pearl points all around!
Tumblr media
ENDING: Early in the series, we learned about a moment called “The Tempest”. A catastrophic even set to take place once enough negative energy is caught. There are a lot of Magical Girl Site administrators that take advantage of “POOR UNFORTUNATE SOULS”. They pick the most unfortunate girls as pawns in their game. And once “The Tempest” hits, everyone will die and the world will start over anew. Aya and Yatsumura end up meeting new magical girl allies and even a few that were coersed by different administrators. Not to mention one of Aya’s bullies is a magical girl too with a score to settle! What could be worse?
Tumblr media
How about we add Aya’s disgusting brother to this mix?! As I’ve mentioned before, Aya’s brother Kaname would use Aya as a personal punching bag in order to get rid of stress. When Aya became a magical girl, she would spend more time with Yatsumura or the other girls, leaving Kaname to go without slugging his sister. So fuckface over here manipulates another magical girl, Nijimi to do what he says. This leads to him stealing Nijimi’s underwear and gaining her magical power of mind control. I never thought I would have to say a sentence like that, but here we are.
Tumblr media
Kaname went out of control with this power as he managed to injure all of the girls and give a fatal blow to Nijimi. But another possible enemy dropped a bomb on us when they kidnapped Kaname. THEN, these girls are targeted at Nijimi’s funeral and they almost died. Add another plot-twist, a police officer that’s been seen from time to time in a lot of the tragedies in the show is in cahoots with one of the magical girl site administrators. This keeps getting fuckier by the minute! Well, the girls felt it was time to take action and try to take out the administrators that screwed them with this doomed fate. But once they took out one of the administrators, they came across an ugly truth.
Sight administrators are magical girls who died previously!
Yeah, not that big of a shock! Madoka Magica gave us magical girls who end up so corrupt that they become witches they’re supposed to fight. While some of the administrators ended up falling to these girls, Nana (the creepy one we’ve been watching since ep 1) is the hardest one to take out. She ends up killing Yatsumura (because she used up too much of her power), but then manipulates her to become an administrator.
Tumblr media
Once she manipulated Yatsumura, she ends up going after Aya. And after a lot of back-and-forth between the two girls, Yatsumura was able to snap out of Nana’s control and they managed to take out Nana. And we end the series with a brighter future for Aya and Yatsumura as their lives become a little less unfortunate.
Yeah, few issues here!
1.) There are still a butt-load of site administrators. Isn’t there still a “Tempest” going to happen? 2.) Aya and Yatsumura’s lives aren’t in danger anymore after using fuck-tons of their power? WTF?! 3.) What was the point of Aya shooting herself to get Yatsumura back? I am not following you. Is this some sort of Insception shit?! 4.) That detective! Misumi was his name? Why was he just casually talking to Nana a few episodes back? 5.) Why don’t we see him until the final few moments in the finale? 6.) WHY DID HE RAPE KANAME?! 7.) WHY WAS THIS SCENE A THING? 8.) I don’t want to say Kaname deserved it, buuuuuut… Uuuggghhh…Mumble, mumble. I can’t finish that thought. 9.) These site administrators are probably pissed and are going to want revenge on these magical girls. What’s going on here?
…Let me guess, I need to read the manga to get all my questions answered…
FUCKING FIGURES!
Tumblr media
Seriously...what Misumi did. That scene is forever etched in my brain forever. Next to that scene of Kaname wiggling his junk in front of a guy.
This anime was pretty bad. No wait...
This anime was way too edgy for me! Episode 1 was just absolute torture porn involving Aya. The first episode managed to combine the bully scene in Vivid Strike, the puppy killing scene in Elfen Lied, and every bullying episode of Hell Girl all into one single episode. As for the rest of this series, they go above and beyond to grab some of the worst aspects of other animes and implement them here. Aya’s older brother almost has a God-complex that rivals that of Light Yagami of Death Note. Nijimi has a devoted fan that’s almost crossing over from the movie Perfect Blue. Body mutilation scenes on levels not seen since Higurashi! And fill this world up with the worst kinds of humans imaginable like in Elfen Lied! This was just too much hatred! Too much!
Add to that, there’s absolutely no resolution to this story. Yes, Aya and Yatsumura are alive and together. But guys, there are still some other-worldly strong site administrators looming! Tempest is still happening. KANAME IS STILL FUCKING ALIVE…literally and figuratively speaking! And with how much this anime has been panned by anime fans across the board, I doubt if this anime will ever receive a sequel. Guys, if you want a really good 12-episode anime about magical girls with an edge, just watch Madoka Magica. But if you’re a curious idiot like me, whatever, you do you!
As this anime is an Amazon Prime exclusive, I’m afraid that’s the only legal outlet for this.
Now that this is over, my next Amazon/Netflix/Crunchyroll anime is…
Tumblr media
Grand Blue!
Oh, it’s set in a cute ocean town. Am I going to enjoy some cute absurdity like I did with Tsuritama?
Sort of!
