Since FLCL Grunge is only a few weeks away, I just want to come out and declare that I honestly had a soft spot for Progressive and Alternative. Nothing could ever hold a candle to FLCL Classic, but they were enjoyable enough followups and I’m intrigued on how Grunge and Shoegaze will add to this strange little world.

The aftermath of FLCL Shoegaze be like.
Also, be on the lookout for a postmortem on all the FLCL sequels I've been writing for a while where I look at the overarching themes encompassing them all and compare them to my crossover fanfiction.

i think FLCL Shoegaze is like, simultaneously good and bad for all the reasons that made Alternative actually good
Alternative is really good and i'll die on that hill forever. at one point i used to like it more than the original and while that isn't the case anymore for now maybe i'll go back once i rewatch Alternative i still hold it in very high regard and i think what makes Alternative so good is that it's capable of standing on its own. if you were to remove all the FLCL stuff from it, make it a 13 episode anime and make everything with Pets the mid-series and focus on building from there, it could've made it as it's own IP. it was part of the FLCL universe, yes, but it was also not afraid to do its own thing. Alternative was capable of having its own identity beyond "it's an FLCL sequel" with it's own personality
in that sense, it makes sense that Shoegaze, which is a direct sequel and even has the same director is the same, but it doesn't... have enough episodes, tbh? like there's one ep yet, so there's still a chance at revealing stuff but... i dunno. it's already over, basically.
more chances to see Harumi and Masaki bond as they climb up the tower, maybe meeting new people as they continue to climb up as the side character of the week and robots along the way: it's like... a big part of FLCL is bonds. it's a coming-of-age story, and part of growing up is understanding the bonds you have, and sometimes recognizing the ones you have aren't healthy.
it feels gone here. the most development we've gotten was more related to Kana, a character from the last generation and what she was up to after Alternative. it's like we're already at the ending when it just started, like the characters just took one big step to get there instead of watching it develop. Grunge, for my issues with it, had a larger cast of characters that we got to see the adventures of over 3 episodes... and 1/3 of these episodes mostly focusing on Kana, who already had 6 episodes to develop.
i dunno. Shoegaze also isn't afraid to do it's own thing. i just... i feel like it's over when it feels like it's just begun. we still have one ep left, but i can't help feel like: i want four more episodes, not one, you know? and the lack of those bonds has really hurt my enjoyment of Shoegaze. it's good for all the reasons Alternative is, but doesn't have the time to actually flesh any of those things out, so it falls flat. i feel like Harumi is a character i'd normally love, but all i feel myself caring about is seeing more Kana because of how this show has gone. ever since it started airing, i started realizing whenever i think about Shoegaze i just really think about more Kana, who's a great character, as opposed to the underdeveloped main characters
anyone else feel the same? i'm curious

Toonami Weekly Recap 09/30/2023
FLCL Shoegaze EP#01 - Furu-Bari (Full Barricade): A boy named Masaki has felt like a loner throughout his childhood. Ever since smoke rose from a giant clothes-iron shaped building on the outskirts of town, Masaki started to see glowing, green ghosts everywhere he went, in addition to a strange purple bird-like ghost on top of Tsuganei Tower. However, no one else saw them and treated him as a weirdo, causing him to be estranged from his peers. After transferring to his high school, he met an eccentric girl named Harumi who entertained his sketches of ghost sightings. One day, Masaki got sick of his situation and decided to make a bomb with supplies from the school chemistry lab. Though Harumi caught him before he could get started, she decided to help him and went to a local hardware store to continue gathering supplies. Some time later, the two of them decided to detonate their bomb inside the tower, with Masaki hoping to find the truth behind the giant bird only he can see. The Tower got the attention of not just the police, but also Bureau of Interstellar Immigration Chief Kanda and Kana Koumoto. When Masaki and Harumi reach the top of the tower, they find a completely empty room, making their effort seem pointless. Harumi decides to go ahead and light the fuse for the bomb, but Masaki gets angry at her, setting off an NO Channel reaction that lights the fuse itself. Masaki tries to throw the bomb away, and ends up blowing up a part of the roof, revealing a portal into Imaginary Space.

Rewatching Alternative and feeling lowkey bummed out that it didn't come out before Progressive. Feels like not many people gave it a chance 'cause Progressive didn't live up to expectations, but man, it's just so good! ╰(*´︶`*)╯

Flcl idea
Since I realized that Flcl alternative takes place before the original show and Progressive, I now headcanon that Kana is Naota and his brother’s mother from when she was a teenager.
Additionally I still headcanon that Hidomi Hibajiri’s father and Naota’s brother are the same person.

Some Alternative things I’m thinking of:
Tumblr media
Haruko never had her vespa this season. Instead, Kana’s boss has it.
Haruko’s personality is severely different in Alternative than both FLCL original and Progrssive, much more heroic and doing her duties as a space cop.
Kana had the Atomsk symbol on her forehead when becoming powerful enough to destroy the space-time continuum and rewrote reality to her desires. Her hair also resembles Atomsk’s in flashbacks and his general color scheme.
N.O. power is said to be tied to maturity. The more mature somebody is, the more powerful their N.O. can be. Atomsk, being the pinnacle of maturity has the most powerful N.O.
The entirety of the endgame of Alternative was Kana accepting that she would never see Pets again no matter how sad she is and coming to terms with it and accepting maturity and embracing the friendships she does have.
The planet at the end is clearly not Earth. It’s likely a terraformed Mars, shaped by Kana’s power.
Haruko had visions of OG FLCL as she was apparently sent back in time, and will now have her vespa.
Haruko will not become more vicious because she now knows of Atomsk’s incredible power.
Because Kana is Atomsk. She became Atomsk by reaching the pinnacle of maturity.
In conclusion: Alternative is a prequel to both OG FLCL and Progressive, as a now more deranged and obsessed Haruko who remembers what she has seen during the events of Alternative once sent back in time now years for Kana’s incredible powers as Atomsk by ripping her from her dimension (where she lives now) into the new dimension Haruko lives in. In order to hide her identity, when Kana is in the main FLCL timeline, she chooses the appearance of a giant bird to hide her true self.

"Kana-bun" Sketchbook & Digital, 2018 There's no love lost in the rush of familiarity and nostalgia, for me, with the release of both FLCL Alternative and Progressive's first episodes. That being said, Alternative really stuck out to me with it's first episode so I decided to pay tribute to one of its protagonists: Kana. I feel the titling of the new seasons feels quite apt and have been handled beautifully as well as artistically in their own ways. Alternative's pacing does feel like an alt-music version of the original season of FLCL which is a feat unto itself. I can't speak highly enough of it. I can't wait for more and encourage you all to experience it for yourselves :)
