hi hi!! another anon asked me the same thing and honestly idk how to word it / expand on it much

but i think the way a lot of western fans had reacted specifically to the brief scene of mitsuki and how much they continue to have like a very extreme view on her parenting is a clue-in to peoples unfamiliarity with asian familial responsibility in general ig.

like a lot of people were very quick to jump to calling her abusive pointing to her hitting bakugou (in a way that is obviously meant to be read as a gag) and points out her critique of his behavior / calling him weak to be abusive.

but like. horikoshi has no issue showing abusive parenthood in it's entirety. if we as the audience were meant to infer that from any part of bakugous character, we would've seen it very explicitly in the text already. mitsuki just doesn't have a gentle style to parenting bakugou but her parenting style does feel very... asian mom to me in general

then there's this thing that a lot of western fans hyperfocused on when the anime came out which is mitsuki calling bakugou weak and an instance in the hero license arc w todoroki where he mentions being raised roughly (it is clear by the end of this chapter that bakugou means to exhibit his power, not that he was beat at any point or abused at any point.)

for mitsuki calling bakugou weak it needs more clarification i think. but in japan, there is HUGE cultural values of not inconveniencing or imposing upon other people. like it has a whole phrase. hito ni meiwaku wo kakenai. do not take up any attention and always assume you're the least important person in the room.

mitsuki references this manner in the raws esentially. a word that mitsuki uses when calling bakugou weak is miuchi which can mean relative but can also refer to body or extension of ones body. her calling bakugou weak can also be interpreted as her being critical of her inability to parent well. the japanese audience did not have anything even kind of resembling the reaction to this scene as the western audience did and in general i think this jump to calling mitsuki abusive and not acknowledging any of the other nuances of her speech to the teachers felt very indicative of that cultural gap i suppose

because mitsuki also goes on to acknowledge how bakugou was also ultimately effected by the system and gives probably the most straightforward summaries of his character in the entire show that isnt like pure subtext. and bakugou quite obviously isnt scare of her. like he shows no signs of abuse otherwise.

people are free to see their relationship however they want, but i do think the overlooking of these things or this very literal interpertation of their relationship was very telling that people were viewing the story through very western values i guess.

TRANSLATION NOTES/PERSONAL INTERPRETATION

*this write/erase motif seems to come up in jp lyrics a lot, but while researching all i found was that it could be citing the line "恋、と書いたら、あと、書けなくなった。/As for love… no, having once written that word I can write nothing more." in osamu dazai's novel the setting sun. which, WOULD make sense, but i'm not entirely convinced so. shrugs.

**the "valley of tears" line seems like it MAY be a reference to a text by a medieval dominican friar. of all things. The Sinner's Guide/La Guía de Pecadores was written by louis of granada in 1555, but was brought by missionaries to early christian communities in nagasaki and translated in 1599. also mekuru is turning/flipping through pages but mekumekuru is to blind or dazzle so i wanted to convey both.

***this part isn't said out loud, and the "lalala" that is isn't in the written lyrics

also worth mentioning that "nouveau roman" itself refers to a 1950s wave of experimental french novels. i think that with the themes of conflicting history and present, and the literary angle, it could all mean…rather than being restrained by the written past, write your own future... maybe!

Im really not interested in getting into sakurazaka btw because keyaki were my first love and judging from some of these clips... They've become really good at variety. And the whole appeal of keyakitte kakenai was that they were ALL socially inept!!!! The appeal was that they sucked!!! Every single one of them was such a CHARACTER, like, holy shit, gen 1 is the most iconic lineup of characters jpop has ever had. Tsuchida and sawabe had a hell of a task in front of them. And now it's just like... 17 techi mini-me's BUT they can make jokes 🥱😑😑. The ONLY girls i found interesting from 2nd were marina chan and takemoto yui (her baby video is so iconic shes so freaking KAWAII). And I guess hono chan as a center for nagaredama was a slay? オサナイ(Osanai)カケナイ(Kakenai)シャベラナイ(Shaberanai), como viene en katakana, no supe identificar muy bien el segundo カケナイ(Kakenai) (ahí en cuando me doy cuenta que el kanji es realmente importante jsjs) así que por lo que investigue, se refiere a alguien quien pierde el tiempo, es por eso que le puse el “procrastinador”. En el tercero, シャベラナイ(Shaberanai) es simplemente alguien quien no habla, asi que investigue una forma de referir a ese tipo de personas, y me salio el “taciturno”, que es básicamente “persona que es habitualmente callado o silencioso”. オサナイ(Osanai) es simplemente alguien joven o infantil.

吹き溜まり (Fukidamari) es un lugar donde la nieve y las hojas caídas son arrastradas por el viento, o donde las hojas caídas son arrastradas por el flujo de agua en el mar o lagos, o sus depósitos. Al español se le conoce como “ventisquero”.

目深 (mabuka) es literalmente como “ojos profundos” pero al investigar más, pude hayar que también se le denomina como “cuanto más ocultas tus ojos, más profundo usas un sombrero”, “llevar bajo sobre los ojos”, así que puse “Jale el [-borde del-] sombrero [-hacia abajo-] para ocultar a la vista la herida en la muñeca” para que tuviera más sentido con lo demas que decia esa oracion de la letra.
