Review: Looking at my blog post history implies that I only read fem!Harry or Hermione time travel romances and honestly - I’m not sure that I have read anything else consistently enough to deny that. Nonetheless, here’s another one for the list until I find other fics that aren’t in the two categories.

I’m going to be honest - Fred x Hermione is my OTP, and it’s honestly so hard to find non one-shots for this couple. Among the hundreds of incomplete Fremione stories - this is one of the few that’s actively updating and is worth reading. I’ve never been a fan of romances that get too strong too fast (where the couple is proclaiming their love for each other every five minutes) and this story does a good job in setting up and maintaining the romance.

Furthermore, unlike other Fremione fics, the story does not completely sacrifice story progression for its romance. While there is something about the backdrop of the upcoming war that heightens the reader’s stress for Hermione and Fred’s future, the story could stand to be cut down by 50k words. In doing so, the important reveal in the story could have come a few chapters earlier, allowing the story to progress faster than its current pace.

The story almost strikes a good balance between canon rehash and changes to the timeline. For the most part, it seems that they’ve done a good job of sticking to the elements of Half-Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows that are necessary for their story.

It’s in some of Hermione’s initial decisions that Falling Through Time loses some of its appreciation from me. The tricky thing about canon rehashes and do-over fics is that the character’s decisions have to make sense independent of the original HP series events. This is why Hermione’s decision to let things happen as they are makes no sense to me - she wouldn’t just be okay with sitting back and letting things happen as they went the first time. The idea of fixed events works well when there is a strong writer at the helm, but things can’t just happen because you need the characters to go back on the path of the original story.

I realize that the above rant may just be a personal gripe, but the one thing that is enough to make me drop a story is bad characterization. If I can’t answer the WHY of the actions a character takes, then it’s not a character worth pursuing.

alright, so, probably not my best art ever, but I got inspired by Kait’s height chart for Varian & decided I should do one for Wirt. 

In the adult au, he grows out of cape & only wears his hat when he’s performing a poem or song. It’s what he wears to become “The Pilgrim.” Graying early because of course he is. When Varian first got his new look I basically told L that I was determined to give Wirt as many Hobbit qualities as possible. So I gave him a Bilbo coat.

Somewhere between the couch and her bed, she found a headache that had decided to accompany the itch in torturing her. She kept her eyes closed, and, in what she was sure must have looked like a dramatic act, lifted her hand to her head and moaned, "I've already had the chicken pox, why do I have to have dragon pox too?"

"Just lucky that way," he sighed, sitting down beside her. "Really it's lucky for you that you didn't get Dragon Pox as a kid could you imagine? They'd have taken you into a private hospital and ran all sorts of tests before one of our lot found you," he shivered, having ended up in an Australian A&E years ago. "All that poking and prodding, you'd have hated it."

She dropped her hand and tilted her head looking at him, "Yes it's fortunate I didn't have it then," she agreed, "but why do I have to have it now?"

"Bright side number two my dear Sunny," he smiled pulling up the blankets up to her chin, "You only get it once. And if you've got it now that means you won't die of it in old age, we'll live forever yet."

Outside the Room of Requirement, the castle was pulsing with the song of a thousand voices. A thousand heartbeats coursing together for the moments to come. Every window seemed to be flooding light as feet raced up and down the stairs, the defendants of the castle bracing for the oncoming storm.

Fred and George headed up the flights of stairs, navigating the way to their tower. There wasn't anyone for them to run into this high up, everyone had already been evacuated from these floors, or had made their way to the lower floors to fight.

"Remember when we were first years and we'd joke about launching an attack on Filch from the tower?" Asked George skipping up the stairs as they went, "who'd had thought we'd actually get to try."

"In all fairness though we're not aiming for Filch," chimed Fred walking to the edge of the battlements "If he happens to be in the line of fire-." George looked up and shrugged, "I promised McGonagall I'd take down any threat to the school—we didn't specify what made up a threat. Far as I'm concerned he's still in the top ten."
