❝ DELICATE ❞ — kageyama tobio
cw: gn!reader, fluff, depictions of eczema/skin issues, insecurity, hurt/comfort, established relationship, extremely self-indulgent | wc: 507
it’s so itchy.
the sensation of your nails dragging against the bumpy and dry flaking skin scratching an itch like no other, the satisfaction of peeling a scab so great until it stings. and bleeds. and then all of a sudden showering hurts—
“i can hear you scratching.” tobio calls out from the kitchen as he walks out with a tall glass of water and a bowl of berries, setting it down on the coffee table and sinking down on the plush couch next to you.
your hand pauses in it's movements for barely a minute before going back to it's bad habit, words dragging out in a whine when you hear him let out a tch in disapproval, "i can't help it."
“i know, but you gotta stop it.” he chides, grabbing your hand and lacing your fingers together, thumb rubbing soothing circles to distract you and effectively put a stop to your scratching. "picking at it isn't going to make it better."
hands still clasped together, he leans off to the side and blindly pats around the side table, feeling around for the small tube of healing ointment sitting in the black ceramic cat trinket dish (obviously you picked it out, saying it looked just like him).
coming back to you, he wraps his arm around your frame and pulls you closer, squeezing a pea sized amount of ointment on his fingertip and gently spreading it across your broken skin, raw and red from your incessant assault. it’s your fault really for letting it get this bad, but you hiss at the sting anyway, never quite getting used to the burn no matter how many times this has happened.
it’s always been something you struggle with, not just the itch but also accepting the way the patches looked. it’s ugly, and discoloured, the splotches unsightly, and seeing it in the mirror everyday comes with a matching frown. exposing the affected skin doesn’t come easy for you, avoiding it as much as possible and hiding it behind a layer of fabric where you can, but some materials make it itch even more, feeling helpless and insecure as you bare it to the world.
“almost done.” he mumbles, catching you stare off dejectedly from the corner of his eye.
tobio doesn’t need to pay a penny for your thoughts to know you’re feeling down about it again, your silence says a lot. you’ve been together long enough that he can mostly tell what you’re thinking from just your body language and facial expressions, you’ve always been an open book and wore your heart on your sleeve around him after all. he learned to pick up on your cues and subtleties with time, the same way you’ve slowly softened his edges.
a lingering kiss to your temple leads you out of the dense forest of your thoughts like a light in the darkness, his fingers gently holding your chin up to look into his softened, doting eyes.
“i love every part of you.”
and don’t you forget it.

▸ their s/o is drunk and doesn't recognize 'em
summary: Partying all night, dancing and definitely drinking made you drunk enough to not recognize your sweet boyfriend.
ft: iwaizumi, bokuto
note: i hope you guys like this, it’s been a while
Iwaizumi
Iwa just came back from a training camp overseas, so he was really tired and just want to cuddle with you.
Might he be forgetting that you were partying out with your friends so he expects that you won't be coming home early?
He did quite everything while waiting for you, cleaning the apartment-which by the way he realized that it was already clean enough on its own.
He took a bath, and would probably get in trouble as he used your favorite bath bomb without permission, but nothing a kiss can't fix.
Well, what he had to do next was just wait for you. The moment his phone lights up and recognizes his ringtone only for your contact- he rushes swiftly and answered it only to be welcomed by your friends voice?
"Iwaizumi-chan, hello! Can you pick up Y/n at XXX-XXX-XXX. She's pretty tipsy at the momeng. Don't rush though! we'll be with her till you're here." He gets his car keys and locks the apartment door before going out. "I'll be there in 5." He quickly presses the red button which ends the call.
Numerous thoughts were clouding his brain right now. Mainly focused on you and how tipsy are you.
In just a couple of minutes, his phone had told him to turn and then he'll arrive at his destination. No doubt that you were right there sitting out at one of the chairs of the club with your friends.
To say that you were cute doing nothing makes him realize how badly he's down for you.
"Iwaizumi-chan! Thank god you're here. She's been telling us how much she misses you, please take care of her from her." Iwa nods and gave a wave to your friends and then focuses his vision on your body.
He walked closer to your figure and helped you stand, but he was just pushed away. Dumbfounded he cooed you and tried again.
"If you lay your hand on me one. more. time, I promise my boyfriend will beat you into a pulp." he smirks and leans in closer to your face.
"Oh yeah? I bet you must love your boyfriend to reject someone like me huh." He plays along with the drunken act. "I love him so much that it hurts." He panics when tears came out of his eyes.
"Hey baby, what's wrong?" Iwaizumi cups your cheeks and wiped the stray tears away. You looked into his eyes and you noticed a familiar warm loving gaze that you'd been missing for a while.
"Are you my hajime? B-but he wasn’t supposed to come home till….tonight" You hiccup.
“You’re my haji!”
"Yes, baby. Now, will you let me touch you now?" You nodded and jumped into his arms right now.
"Ooof- Careful right there." He didn't hear anything but your cute little snores, he might be tired right now but having that little talk with you just gave him a bit-- a lot of energy in return.
Bokuto
This big ball of fluff was with his teammates for an after-party game.
You, on the other hand, are with your friends and are bar hopping. Expectantly Bokuto wandered his eyes searching for a familiar person, but none to be found.
He just thought that you are still probably having fun with your friends.
He reassured himself that a little bit over twelve is still early so here he is patiently waiting for you (even though there's a slight chance you'll never come) while still enjoying his time with his very own friends.
From the perspective of his teammates, it was odd to see Bokuto sitting in one place and not moving so much. Is it because of his drink?
The loud music of the bar made communication a tad difficult. However, Bokuto did not fail to hear his phone ring with the help of the ringing vibration, of course.
His face did lit up when he saw your nickname on his screen and almost took no time to answer the phone.
"My pretty baby! I miss you so much, What took you so long to call, I was waiting." Bokuto is now in his baby voice pouting, much to his joy it was actually your friend who called him and told him you guys were sitting from a distance to where he and his teammates were.
"Oh, thanks! I'll be right there in a minute." It might seem that Bokuto was drinking beer the whole time but it was actually just an orange juice. He didn't plan on getting drunk before he could pick you up.
Akaashi had told him it was not a gentlemanly move to be drunk and be taken care of his s/o. But to be completely honest, Akaashi just told him that so he could spare you handling Bokuto's weakness #12.
He finally saw where you were when he noticed one of your friends waved their hands to get Bokuto's attention. "Bokuto-kun, we're really sorry. She got pretty enthusiastic and got carried away." your friend scratched her nape.
"It's ok, I'll take her from here. Thanks for dropping by though."
Your friends bid goodbyes to Bokuto before leaving. Your boyfriend helped you stand up, you were blinking your eyes trying to see the person that's in front of you. The moment Bokuto landed his hands to your waist you pushed him enough to collide with another person.
Bokuto apologized repeatedly before directing his attention to you again. His thoughts start to bother him. Couldn't you recognize him? How many drinks did you take?
But He tried again, "Y/n baby, it's Kou. You're boyfriend." It seemed that his puppy eyes were enough for you to recognize him.
"Kou?" He nodded
"Yes! Yes, baby!"
You immediately jumped your way to Bokuto, and kissed him."You're my Kou!" He laughed catching you in his arms. "Now let's get you home." He kisses your lips before dropping a text to his team's group chat.
Akaashi was right! He should be taking care of you when you're drunk. Only because he gets to see this new side of you.

☆ BUMP IN THE ROAD
hq -- kageyama tobio x gn!reader, iwaizumi hajime x gn!reader, kuroo tetsurou x gn!reader, oikawa tooru x gn!reader
summary: facing difficult challenges with your boyfriend.
warnings: angsty but comfort, slight food mentions (most of them are over dinner srry i was hungry😭), some crying
word count: 1.9k
✦ KAGEYAMA TOBIO. miscommunication
you knew that volleyball was important to your boyfriend. heck, everyone in school knew. at the start of the season, you were still able to see kageyama in between class periods and lunch break. but as the season went on, you noticed that it was becoming harder to see kageyama at school and outside of school. sometimes he would even skip lunch breaks to practice. it was clear that kageyama was dedicated to training and improving his skills. it was also clear that practicing 24/7 left him with little time for anything else.
you had patiently been waiting for an opportunity to spend quality time with kageyama. earlier today, you texted him and asked if he would like to come over and eat dinner with you. at first, you were left on read. you were worried to say the least. it's been around 2 since you've last spent time with him in person. as you were looking back at the previous messages between you and kageyama, there was a pattern with his texts. they've all been short and quick. around an hour later, you had gotten a notification that he had liked your message. taking that as a sign that he was on his way to your place, you had started to make his favorite meal, and as if on cue, there was a knock on the door.
“hey, tobio,” you greeted him with a soft smile as you opened the door.
“hey,” he mumbled, head tilted down as he swiftly walked in and took his shoes off.
those were the only words exchanged for a while. the both of you were sitting at your kitchen island, the only noise that was heard were the forks scraping against your plates.
“tobio?” you looked up at him. his hair was disheveled, eyebags evident on his face, and his eyes were empty.
"tobio?" you repeated softly, concern evnident in your voice. his demeanor was so different from the lively, determined kageyama you knew.
he glanced up briefly, meeting your gaze for a fleeting moment before his eyes dropped again. "sorry," he murmured, pushing his food around on his plate without much appetite.
you hesitated, unsure of how to approach the growing distance between you. "is everything okay?" you asked gently, reaching out to touch his hand.
he tensed slightly at your touch, pulling his hand away, as if a reflex. "i'm fine," he replied curtly, his tone cold.
the air between you thickened with tension. you knew kageyama well enough to recognize when something was bothering him, but getting him to open up was always a challenge.
"i... i missed you," you admitted quietly, hoping your vulnerability would help him speak his mind.
he sighed heavily, running a hand through his already disheveled hair. "i know," he said finally, his voice hinted with frustration. "i've just been... stressed. there's a lot ofpressure this season, and i feel like i'm letting everyone down if i don't keep improving."
you listened attentively, heart aching for the weight he carried on his shoulders. "you're not letting anyone down, tobio," you assured him gently. "we all see how hard you're working, and we're proud of you. but... i miss you too. i miss us."
he looked up at you then, sadness in his eyes. "i miss us too," he admitted quietly, remorse clear in his tone. "i'm sorry if i've been distant. i just... i want to be the best for the team, for myself."
you nodded understandingly, reaching out to hold his hand again, this time finding no resistance. "you don't have to do it alone, tobio," you murmured, squeezing his hand reassuringly. "we're here for you. i'm here for you."
he squeezed your hand back gratefully, a small, tired smile tugging at his lips. "thank you," he whispered, his voice laced with emotion.

✦ IWAIZUMI HAJIME. lies
iwaizumi had been acting unusually distant and preoccupied for the past few days, which hadn't gone unnoticed by you. despite your attempts to engage him in conversation or spend time together, iwaizumi seemed to be avoiding them, always coming up with excuses about extra training sessions or team meetings.
one evening, after a particularly long and tiring day for both of you, you decided to surprise him with dinner at his place. you had been looking forward to some quality time together, hoping it would give you guys a chance to reconnect. right as you arrived at his doorstep with bags of groceries in hand, you were surprised to find iwaizumi already home, looking visibly surprised and flustered at your unexpected visit.
"hey, haji," you greeted him with a smile, trying to ignore the tension in the air. "i thought i'd make us dinner tonight. i hope that's okay."
iwaizumi hesitated for a moment, glancing nervously towards the kitchen. "actually, um, i have plans with the team tonight," he replied, his voice sounding strained.
your smile faltered slightly, a disappointed expression creeping onto your face. "but you said you were free tonight," you pointed out gently, feeling a wave of hurt.
iwaizumi sighed, rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly. "yeah, something came up last minute. it's important, i promise," he insisted, avoiding your gaze.
feeling a mix of frustration and confusion, you couldn't help but press further. "hajime, is everything okay? you've been distant lately, and now this..."
he looked torn, clearly struggling with his next words. "it's just... there's been a lot going on with the team. i didn't want to worry you," he finally admitted, his voice tinged with guilt.
your eyebrows furrowed. "so you lied to me?" you asked softly, hurt evident in your tone.
iwaizumi looked torn, realizing the weight of his actions. "i didn't mean to," he started, but you interrupted, your frustration bubbling over.
"you didn't mean to lie, or you didn't mean to hurt me?" you questioned, your voice going against you as it trembled slightly.
iwaizumi sighed heavily, running a hand through his hair in frustration. "i'm sorry," he apologized sincerely, meeting your gaze finally. "i didn't handle this well. i just... i didn't want to burden you with my problems."
you softened slightly, recognizing the sincerity in his apology. "i understand, but i want us to be honest with each other, hajime," you said firmly, your hurt still lingering.
he nodded, reaching out to gently touch your arm. "i know. i'll do better," he promised as he got up from where he was, and engulfed you in a hug.
—
✦ KUROO TETSUROU. past actions
kuroo had been unusually quiet all evening, a brooding intensity replaced his normally easy going demeanor. as you and your boyfriend sat across from each other at the dinner table, the tension in the air was obvious. you glanced up from your plate, sensing something was wrong.
"is everything okay, tetsu?" you asked tentatively, voice breaking the uneasy silence.
kuroo sighed heavily, setting down his fork with more force than necessary. "no, not really."
you furrowed your brows, concerned. "what’s wrong? you’ve been distant all day."
"that’s the thing," he began, tone tinged with frustration. "it’s not just today. i feel like we keep having the same issues, over and over again."
your heart sank as you realized what kuroo was referring to—the unresolved problems from your past arguments that always seemed to resurface. you knew you couldn't avoid this conversation any longer.
"i thought we had talked through most of those," you replied softly, trying to keep your voice steady.
"yeah, but it feels like we never really resolve anything," kuroo argued, his voice rising slightly. "remember that time we fought about—"
"don’t bring that up again, tetsu," you interrupted, frustration bubbling to the surface. "we settled that, didn't we?"
"but did we really?" kuroo shot back, his frustration now fully unleashed. "it’s like we just patch things up for the moment, and then it all comes back."
the argument escalated, both of you bringing up problems that had long been buried but never fully addressed. voices rose, words became sharper as each accusation hit closer to home. kuroo felt a pang of guilt for bringing up the past, but he couldn't shake the feeling of dissatisfaction that had been gnawing at him.
you fought back tears, feeling the weight of the unresolved issues crushing you. "i thought we were better than this," you choked out, voice trembling.
kuroo’s expression softened momentarily at the sight of your watery eyes, but his frustration lingered. "i do too, but how do we move forward if we can't even talk about this?"
the argument reached it's peak, both of you hurt and exhausted. kuroo sighed heavily once more, running a hand through his hair in frustration. you stared down at your plate, tears silently streaming down your face.
"i.. don't know," you finally whispered, the fight draining out.
kuroo’s heart sank at the defeated tone in your voice. he realized then how much you both needed to find a way to resolve your problems—not just for the sake of the relationship, but for your own peace of mind.
"i’m sorry," kuroo murmured, his voice barely audible. "i just... i want us to be okay."
you looked up, meeting kuroo’s eyes with a mix of sadness and longing.
"me too," you whispered back, a glimmer of hope flickering in your eyes.

✦ OIKAWA TOORU. jealousy and insecurities
oikawa had always been charismatic, charming, and surrounded by admirers—both on and off the court. you had always been supportive of his career and his popularity, but lately, found yourself struggling with a growing sense of insecurity.
one evening after a particularly intense match, you and oikawa were walking back to his apartment when a group of fangirls approached, giggling and asking for autographs. oikawa agreed with his usual friendly smile and playful banter, much to the delight of his fans. you stood slightly behind him, feeling invisible and increasingly uneasy.
as you finally entered oikawa’s apartment, you couldn't contain their feelings any longer. "tooru, can we talk for a moment?"
he turned towards you with a grin, still buzzing from the excitement of the match. "of course, what's on your mind?"
"it’s just..." you hesitated, unsure how to voice your feelings without sounding petty. "i feel like you don't notice how much attention you get from other girls."
oikawa’s expression shifted to confusion, his brows furrowing slightly. "what do you mean?"
you took a deep breath, trying to gather your thoughts. iI mean... those fangirls. they’re always around you, and you're so nice to them, which is great! but sometimes, i feel... i feel like i’m not enough. like i can't compete with all those girls who adore you."
your boyfriend’s eyes widened as he finally understood your feelings. "y/n, i didn't realize you felt like this." he stepped closer, gently taking your face in his hands. "i appreciate my fans, but you... you're the most important person to me. no one compares to you."
you felt a rush of relief hearing oikawa’s reassuring words, but the insecurities still lingered. "i know, but sometimes it's hard not to feel jealous."
oikawa nodded, his expression softening with understanding. "i get it now. i’m sorry if I made you feel that way. i’ll try to be more aware of how my interactions might affect you."
you hugged him gratefully, feeling a weight lift off your shoulders. "thank you, tooru. i needed to hear that."
he pressed a kiss to your forehead. "i’m here for you, always. don’t hesitate to tell me when something's bothering you."

"Are you two dating?"
It was a question you were both used to handling, at this point.
A kind, but curt, "No, we're just friends."
Despite how nice you were to anybody who found the need to ask, you wanted nothing more than to strangle the poor soul who started the official rumor that Tobio was your secret boyfriend. You had been friends for years, but it was only just now a problem.
You liked to think it didn't affect much between you. But that was a half-truth; it didn't affect how much you saw each other, but there was this new, sensitive layer to everything you said and did.
The bell rang for lunch and he was standing at your desk, still trying to shake that incessant question. That was the second time today somebody had asked if you were dating.
Tobio swiped his favorite pencil of yours and twirled it between his fingers. He looked like he wanted to ask you something, but his presence grew quieter, darker at the next unwanted presence.
"(Y/n)!" A couple friends from the guys' track team you hadn't seen since your last practice came into the classroom with a few other students, also looking for their friends for the free period.
You grinned and waved them over, taking to a knee on your seat.
"I didn't get to talk to you Wednesday, but I wanted to say congrats on your record!"
"Yeah, that was sick."
Only you could hear Tobio sigh. It was subtle, through his nose, and impatient.
They were excited about the new record you set for the school in your event, making technical jokes, being a little too sparing with the compliments.
You passed a look to him, grin frozen for a second. He was eyeing your friends, head down toying with all the stuff on your desk, glancing up at them through his brow at times, pissed off. He looked like an asshole. Your track friends were picking up on it, too.
"Thanks, guys," You waved them off, trying to be nice enough to make up for Tobio, "See ya at practice."
It was quiet between you until they were completely out of the room. You tried to stifle your smile at what you could only rationalize as jealousy, or possessiveness.
"You gonna be okay?" You joked and sat back down, just to lighten the mood. He would only get defensive if you were direct.
His gaze softened, eyes gently searching your own face as he crafted a tentative, late reply.
"Yeah," Was all.
The subject changed quick, your shared tension simmering back down, "What's the test over?"
The pencil slipped from his fingers and spun to the floor with a quiet clatter- he dove after it and bumped the back of his head on the way up.
Your hands stifled your amused grin in a flash. He was onto you anyway when he resurfaced, staying in a squat, embarrassment taking the form of a frustrated attempt to flick you in the head-- you slapped his wrist away with an uncovered laugh.
"Stop-," You grabbed the other wrist snaking around to finish the job, eye contact friendly and serious at first, "Stop it."
The look he returned seared into you.
It was too much. Tobio gave up quicker than usual. You let out a sigh, both of you unable to joke around like that for long anymore.
This was commonplace behavior at this point- he liked teasing in the form of physical contact, his specialty being flicks, jabs, soft punches, grabs. You preferred the verbal alternative. Insults to his intelligence of all kinds were your favored choice.
"It should be over chapters six through... ten, I think. All the methods, at least."
"I'm so fucked..." He sighed almost immediately.
You rolled your eyes, "That's your problem, you give up too early and don't study."
His pretty blue irises scanned your open notebook, full of highlighted paragraphs, hand written notes, and graphs he couldn't read.
"You hear me?" Your two finger nudge was ignored. He just let his shoulder be moved, as if a ghost was up to it, "Study?"
"Do you even know what that word means?" You chortled.
"I know what study means," He hissed, only making it funnier.
"I'm sure you do," You teased with a stretch over the back of your chair. You leaned far so you could pop your back, and settled down with a groan.
Tobio was looking at your shirt. You adjusted it, pulling it, fluffing it. When he realized you were aware of his staring, he sighed and looked elsewhere.
"Go eat your lunch," You put your cheek against your fist.
It served as a gentle reminder to leave you alone or people would start talking about you again.
"Why can't I eat it over here?" He squinted at the rest of the room, full of groups of people eating their lunches with their friends.
Why was it only different with you two? He could scope two other guy/girl pairs in this room that weren't dating, to his knowledge. While he was at it, he watched for anybody that might start another rumor.
"Well-," You also eyed the room, "Fine, hurry up though."
Tobio quickly unzipped his bag from two desks over and threw the container to you without warning. You caught it, but it was only thanks to your hand-eye coordination. Good form aside, it could've been disastrous.
"Don't throw shit-," You started, but he was hot on your tail before you could call him a dumbass, equipped with an argument as he swiped a chair and pulled it right next to you.
"You caught it."
"Yeah but-,"
"You caught it-," He shoveled about a third of his lunch in his mouth all at once, "I'knew you woul' catch i'."
He could truly be such an ogre. You tried to act disgusted, but there was something cute about his lack of manners- and your suspicion that he may have actually thought harder about that throw than you wanted to give him credit for.
Through the next half of lunch, you watched a mix of clips on your phone from the last year's Olympics and national level matches of multiple sports. Maybe it was because you ended with volleyball that made him so hesitant to stop watching videos and let you alone so that you could study for the exam.
"I dunno why you're studying now," He used one forearm to wipe his chin, the other hand to flip, disinterested, through the pages in your notebook, "It's Friday."
A moment to digest that. He sat, waiting for you to respond to him with an emptiness behind his eyes.
"And...? The exam is Monday."
He nodded.
"You're going to fail. And I'll have no sympathy for you," You laughed, unable to understand what was clogging up the neurons in his brain to trigger such a severe blockage of learning.
Tobio was quiet and still for so long that you were starting to get some quality time in, reading over your notes, highlighting from your text, making some new notes for later. You thought that there was a possible balance to be struck between how attractive somebody was, and how much intelligence they were allowed. Clearly, he was all pretty face, tiny brain.
You glanced a couple of times across your shoulder to him. He wasn't on his phone, and he wasn't looking at you, you could deduce after a few minutes.
It felt tense anytime you weren't speaking to each other. That's why the two of you made an unacknowledged point to talk often, or do an activity together. It was made of lengthy conversations about your respective sports, talking about your own separate friend groups, or going on a run right after school- not much in between.
"What are you doing this weekend?"
The question was quiet, like he was embarrassed, or mulling over exactly how to ask it the whole time. When you looked at him, you were glad he was avoiding you by staring at your notebook. You didn't want him to see the initial reaction on your face.
Tobio didn't sound too terribly invested, but you considered that he could've been asking it that way on purpose.
You hated when it got weird like this. It was like you were confirming the rumors. It was his fault for being so hot and asking weird questions.
-
All he wanted to do was study. You blew a long breath into the cold evening air and watched it rise until it spiraled into nothing. All he wanted to do was study.
Your foot was tapping, impatient, focused on the new chill creeping down your neck past your coat. It was ten minutes past when he wanted to meet you after his practice. The walk to the library wasn't long, but it was Friday and you had some shows to watch, some supper to eat. You enjoyed playing the intellectual high ground around him, yes, but you had no real plans to study before Saturday afternoon- until he asked you.
As you shivered outside, squinting at the frosty, dead grass, you realized you wouldn't do this for anyone else. That freaked you out just a little.
"Hey," He was jogging up to you from the gym- you turned to the side to face him in the covered walkway.
You sighed, just to express your disdain, but you were unable to control a vicious, goofy tremble in the process.
Instead of the look you were trying to conjure -apologetic, penitent-, he broke out into a half-cocked smile. But Tobio didn't acknowledge anything. No a smartass comment about your giant puffy coat, no jab at your dramatics, not even a mockery shiver.
All he did was bump your shoulder and walk in the direction of the library.
You lagged behind, all of a sudden warmer than you needed to be, and mulling over how cute he looked when he smiled. A genuine one. Not a sly, ill-intended snicker or the smirk he had when he stole your things and held them over your head.
This creeping fondness had to be shaken out of you.
Your legs carried you stronger, faster, to catch up to him. He hardly had a second to turn and look at you before you gave him a playful shove back, your grin ungovernable in such cheesy conditions.
"What was that look for?" You laughed, dodging a smack to the back of the head for such a big and surprising shove. You usually didn't return his touchiness, which in turn kept it at bay, so he took a minute to decide if he wanted to escalate things. You stayed ready at his side as you walked, just in case.
"What look?" He mumbled, careful not to look at you.
His hands were deep in his pockets. His jacket was zipped open, giving him some room to operate, but it was a sign of surrender. You put your guard down.
"You smiled at me," Was cautious in nature, but not in tone.
It was friendly and not indicative of anything- purely observational- but you wanted to know if there was more.
A tiny sideways glance told you so much.
Tobio's face was redder. You weren't imagining it, because he actively avoided your staring.
Hand still in his pocket, he went to shove your shoulder like usual- you dodged it with a laugh, about to punch his side, but got caught short when he grabbed you.
"I dunno what you're talking about," His voice was dripping in sarcasm.
His arm was wrapping around your side, keeping you from fighting back, grabbing firm at your waist through his pocket and pulling you into his warm body, into his jacket with him.
It knocked you completely off balance. Stumbling, pressed into the side of his chest for a few moments, you were trying to keep up with him before he did you the favor of squeezing you closer, taking most of your weight.
He rubbed his arm real tight along your side; it was all you could feel, aside from the floating sensation. His strength took you by surprise.
"This is why people think we're together!"
You pushed out of his loosening grip at a good time. The joke was starting to feel too intimate. You were at your destination, too.
"Well," His defensiveness was so exaggerated it looked like he was upset you wiggled away from him, "I'm not gonna take my hands outta my pockets. Are you kidding me?" He scoffed, leaving you to spiral in the act all by yourself, "It's cold."
As you entered the building, it dawned on you that it was going to be one of those things that didn't get talked about again. You had a built up quite a few moments like that over the past few years- but lately, they seemed to be a more frequent occurrence.
The table you chose was out of the way and quiet. It was far away from the sports section or any screens so neither of you were tempted by any distractions. Tobio took it upon himself to grab the extra book you needed before you got settled in.
You had time to sit and think about it. His argument made no sense. Many arguments wouldn't have held well to that little move he pulled.
When he put his arm around you, his strong, warm arm-- you were breathing in a little too much cologne, mixed with his sweat that you never seemed to mind the smell of-- the smile in his eyes but not his mouth-- the mint on his breath. Was all that really for a bad joke? Just an embrace between friends?
It was all you could think about, but you knew you had to get it together when you saw him coming back from across the library.
He got stopped short by a girl you didn't know. She asked him something and pointed at the shelf.
Your nails raked at the lining on your pants. Your eye twitched and you knew you were too far gone. Your eye was twitching at some girl talking to him.
She reached up on her tippy toes for the novel she wanted.
Sure, he was tall and she was short, but was that really necessary to communicate the point?
"Ugh," You spat- you couldn't help it, you hated those girls that acted like babies for attention. It made everyone look bad.
Tobio grabbed the novel and handed it to her like a dirty rag, chin turned towards you with a big frown that said 'Yeah, yikes.'
You were beyond thankful he hadn't fallen under her spell. But, on the downside, he caught you staring. Staring hard.
When he returned to your table and took the seat across from you, he already looked like he was about to address it. That tiny smirk said it all.
"Don't look so upset," He scanned over your unamused face and reeled it back, opting for a softer, candid, "She's not my type."
This was getting weird and stilted. You both understood there had been too many mentions of dating-adjacent topics. It was about 300% more than usual. There stood a decision to make.
To take advantage of the fact that what was on your mind finally held relevance to the conversation, or to switch the subject and risk never getting the opportunity to talk about it, nor entertain it?
You tried to strike a balance between nonchalant and inquisitive, but it wasn't possible. Your fingers tapped a dull eraser onto the table. You thought it might make you feel better, but it didn't.
"Then--," In fact, you realized you couldn't ask anything at all without looking too interested.
At the last second, you pulled back, your expression impossible to read because you felt a million different ways at once, "Let's just- um-... let's start with chapter six."
He frowned, his gaze anywhere but you. The quiet was heavy.
Without a word, he cracked upon the new textbook in a similar way to yours.
You regretted it. It would be long, uphill battle trying to facilitate a conversation like that again.
As your study session passed in mostly silence, you began to gain a sense of growing respect for the newfound presence forming between you. Whatever was changing needed to develop on its own time.

fluffy headbands
featuring: kageyama tobio
warnings: none, fluffy, cheesy ?
kageyama tobio x g/n reader
a/n: this is a headcanon I came up with that I anonymously sent in another author’s inbox. I don’t remember who that author was so if you’re reading this, hi :). I’ve had this draft for a longgggg time so I’m glad I’m finally posting it. hope you like it
original headcanon:
when you began getting comfortable dating, you would push his hair up to kiss his forehead whenever you wanted to show him affection. now he has a pack of headbands he bought himself and puts one on and stares at you expectantly whenever he wants your attention 😭💕
masterlist
kageyama tobio was not used to feeling like this. at least, not until he met you.
you with your soft smiles and encouraging eyes. you who never pressured him into anything he wasn’t ready to do. you who beamed when he grabbed your hand of his own accord for the first time. you who always knew when he needed your affection. sometimes though, it took you a little longer to pick up on it than he was willing to wait.
kageyama wasn’t good with words which is why your ability to read him was so beneficial to your relationship. when the two of you first got comfortable together, you stared at him until he nervously asked what was wrong. “can I kiss your forehead?”
he blinked before nodding with red cheeks, watching as you pushed his hair up and pressed a soft kiss to the center of his forehead. you pulled back with a grin, combing his hair back in place as he stared at you with a lovestruck expression, “again, please.”
with a laugh, you kissed it again, over and over as he asked every time you pulled away.
it wasn’t until after the first few instances of out-of-character behavior that you began to notice a pattern. every once in a while, you’d drag him with you to the bathroom. you would sit on the counter with his body slotted between your legs as you roped him into your skincare. the first time you tried it, you insisted on wearing matching headbands to hold back his bangs. the cute, furry bow made you giggle as he huffed loudly, eyes rolling and hands squeezing your hips gently. you decided to compensate for the slight embarrassment by covering his forehead in kisses, his face flushing as he lowered his chin for you to continue.
ever since then, this small step became part of the ritual. right before skincare, you’d slide his headband in place and his head would automatically lean down for you to pepper kisses on him again and again.
one day, you walked in to your shared apartment to find tobio sitting on the couch wearing one of the fluffy headbands you kept in the bathroom and looking at you almost expectedly. you giggled upon seeing him and immediately sped across the room to cup his cheeks, “what’s up with the headband, baby?”
he subconsciously nestled his face into your hands, “it’s easier to wash my face this way.”
you let out a hum of acknowledgement as you began covering his forehead in kisses. it was instinctual. how were you NOT supposed to kiss the part of him that was always covered the few times it became exposed?
this thought crossed your mind every time you came home to the sight of him gazing at you from across the room, waiting. the instances were always days apart so it wasn’t until he got a little too comfortable and wore it two days in a row that it clicked for you.
you shifted from your position on his lap, leaning back in your straddle to analyze his face. “tobio…” you started, suspiciously, “are you wearing these headbands on purpose?”
his eyes widened and his mouth opened and closed as a surprised, strangled sound came from his throat. with a wide grin, you brought his face to your lips once again, “that’s..” kiss, “so…” another kiss, “cute!”
his face heated up under your palms as he shook his head, refusing to look up at you. you continued your gentle assault on every inch of his bare skin until the heat radiating from him slowly dissipated and he sighed. you decided not to mention it again, opting to never bring up his shame. knowing tobio, he would want to burn every headband in the apartment and never speak of this again.
or so you thought. when you opened the door after work the next day, you found your boyfriend sitting on the couch with it on. his face was red, but he couldn’t hide his small smile as you ran towards him giggling.
thank you for reading <3

Tobio Kageyama's thing with hugs
Part two: Take care of yourself (Sugawara & Kageyama)
Kageyama has a thing with hugs. Sure, he's touch starved enough to appreciate any form of physical affection- but there's something about hugs that does things to his chest. Things he'd never say out loud. Things that, eventually, he says anyway.
(aka. kageyama has a thing for hugs. he & the other karazuno boys realize this, after a few particular situations where each of the members hugs kageyama for the first time. based on this post)
Warnings: none! kageyama mentions feeling a bit insecure, but it's all very soft aside from that!
Practice had been pretty chill, that day. After a sudden spur of relentless improvement in each of the players' new moves, due to their even more exhaustive training, it was a bit weird to have a practice day when things just felt... normal.
Now, Sugawara was just as excited as everyone else for the preliminar matches, and just as motivated to get better- if not more. There was still that little sting of insecurity inside his chest, knowing most of the first years were titular players now, while he was stuck at the bench. Then again, he tried to push himself to use that as motivation to keep practicing, to keep improving, and to make the most out of whatever time he got to play at any matches.
It was nice, however, to have a more relaxed practice sometimes. He knows better than anyone how easy it is for his teammates (and him, too, sometimes) to get caught up in the deep desire to keep getting better, to keep winning- so much that they'd forget that practicing moves they were already good at was also part of training, and that taking care of themselves was also crucial if they wanted to do their best at every match.
Not everyone was as content as him with the unusually calm practice, though. At least Kageyama didn't seem to be.
They had both been setting for the strikers to practice their regular attacks, for a bit over 10 minutes now. Suga felt nice- everyone had a relaxed smile on their faces, and most of the players seemed happy enough with each of their strikes. They took their time between each attack, which meant they didn't get quite as tired as they did some other days. He felt good seeing the smile on Azumane's face, specially. He felt good knowing he could get that smile on his face with his sets, even if they weren't as perfect as Kageyama's.
At some point, out of habit, Suga glanced at the other setter. His dark brows were scrunched together in a frown that was just a bit deeper than his usual serious resting face, eyes focused on the ball as he continued setting- yet he didn't seem like he was actually looking at it. His lips were tightly pressed together. He kept tapping his foot on the floor in an anxious manner, whenever he was waiting for another player to set for. His restless thoughts were so loud and fast, Suga could almost feel them.
— Hey, Kageyama! — he exclaimed, as he continued to set for the other players — why the frown?
The black haired boy had briefly glared at him, his frown deepening as he pressed his lips tightly together. Suga gave him a nervous smile.
— Nothing. Focus on practicing.
Ouch.
He'd never been the best at aproaching Kageyama- none of them were, really. The boy was closed off and painfully reserved, yet the playful tone he had whenever he scolded someone, his teasing and sarcastic jokes let Suga know he was probably desperate to get closer to them. Desperate to let someone in- to trust them. Perhaps he just didn't know how to go about it-
Perhaps he didn't know how to trust, at all.
Practice went by smoothly, despite the younger setter's mood being slightly off. Ukai dismissed them with a small smile on his face, and made note to mention how proud he was of their recent drastic improvement, as well as remind them to take care of themselves and rest. Sugawara discreetly glanced at Kageyama, and found he still had that slightly uncomfortable look on his face.
The grayhaired boy had caught himself thinking about that quite a few times, naturally. He cared about his team, and about his teammates- not only as players, but as friends and people. That applied to Kageyama as well, even if they weren't quite as close. Which meant he had noticed his anxious attitude that day, and had immediately decided to try and do something about it. He just had to figure out what.
— Alright, it's Suga's turn to close up today — Daichi announced, as soon as the professor and coach had left the gym
Suga nodded, smiling at their team captain. The other players hurried in and out of the changing rooms, seemingly eager to go home for a good night of rest.
Everyone except Hinata and Kageyama, of course.
— I wish I could stay and practice a bit more, too! — Hinata whined and pouted, as he made his way to the door — Family's coming over tonight, though
— Whatever, it's fine, — he thought he almost saw a pout threatening to form in Kageyama's lips as well, as he replied to Hinata— I'm probably not gonna stay too much longer, either
Suga watched the two wave goodbye to each other, while he also said goodbye to the rest of the team.
After that, he made his way to the storage room and gave a quick glance around, to make sure everything seemed to be put away correctly. He locked up the door to the storage room and grabbed his bag from the bench next to the court, where he had left it during practice. He let out a yawn, stretching his arms and rolling his wrists softly while he entered the changing room. It was quiet, as expected.
He splashed water on his face and looked at himself in the mirror for a moment. He looked at his own resting expression- a small, gentle smile on his lips, his eyes as kind as always. He wondered- sure, he knew how to speak to people in a way that helped them feel comfortable, secure. Cared for. He had a hard time when it came to Kageyama, though- the boy didn't seem to appreciate his caring attitude as much as others. It hurted him a bit, to be honest. But he was still determined to figure out a way to help his teammate out- he just had to come up with a different way to approach the situation.
He let out a small sigh, trying not to let the frustration get to him. He ran a hand through his gray hair as he walked towards the lockers, and was surprised by the sight of a black haired boy sitting on the bench, tying his shoes.
— Oh, hey! — he waved and gave him a small smile — Didn't know you were still here
Kageyama was looking down at his own feet, but as soon as the other spoke, his head shot up so quickly he was almost scared he'd get dizzy from the sudden movement.
— Suga— he muttered, eyes wide and mouth slightly open
Sugawara sat down next to him and felt the other boy's eyes follow him. Even he could feel Kageyama's intense and nerve-wrecking stare on him, Suga made sure to keep a soft smile on his face.
— How are you doing? I noticed you were a bit tense at practice today
Kageyama looked back down at his own feet. He had finished tying up his shoes, it seemed. He placed his hands on one of his knees to rest his chin on them and frowned slightly, pressing his lips together. This time, though, his frown was different- he seemed to be contemplating something. Suga stayed silent, and let him take a few seconds to answer.
— Sorry. Didn't mean to be rude earlier — Kageyama's voice was low, eyes still focused on his own shoes.
— It's fine! I get it. I just wanted to make sure you're okay- but I know it can get a bit annoying sometimes
Suga scratched the back of his neck apologetically and redirected his focus to the floor. From the corner of his eyes, he could see the younger boy biting his bottom lip.
— No, it's not annoying — he admitted — I just... I don't know, I was just in a bad mood today. Sorry
— Yeah, I figured so
— I just... — he stressed his bottom lip, and made a pause before continuing — I- I don't know. It just felt wrong to have such a slow practice day. I feel like I'm wasting time
Suga looked up at him again, but Kageyama's eyes remained firm on his own feet. His brows were scrunched together in concentration, and his lips were slightly tilted downwards in a discontented expression. Suga raised a brow, questioning.
— We still practiced a lot though. It's not wasted time
— I know, — Kageyama sighed — I don't mean you guys. I just...
His blue eyes raised up to Suga for a brief moment, for the first time since the conversation had started, but he quickly looked away. His expression softened into something that, Suga guesses, seemed somewhat like sadness.
Kageyama didn't say anything else for a few minutes.
The silence between them wasn't particularly tense, but it felt heavy. Sugawara looked at the lockers, seeing each of them decorated with stickers and other things that, although it might not be obvious at first sight, reflected a bit of each of his teammates' personalities. His own locker had a few stickers- one of them was a flower that Nishinoya had drawn for him. Another one a cup of coffee, with steam coming out of it.
Kageyama's locker door was plain, except for a sticker Hinata had randomly given him one day, of a blue, white and yellow volleyball.
He looked back at the boy sitting infront of him.
At the end of the day, Suga was fairly good at reading his friends- at taking care of them, and knowing what they needed. Even if he didn't always fully understand what was going through their heads, he somehow managed to figure out what they needed to hear.
So why would Kageyama be an exception?
— You know, — he began speaking in a soft voice, almost hesitantly — you need to rest too, just like everyone else
— I know. I sleep well and I take breaks and all that stuff.
— Yeah, but I don't mean just that — Suga turned around slightly, so that he was facing the other setter — You do realize you don't need to be constantly making big improvements, right?
Kageyama frowned.
— What do you mean?
— Like, it's physically impossible for you to unlock a new move every single practice, or to get drastically better every time you play — he gesticulated with his hand, casually — and frankly, you don't need to, either.
Kageyama looked at him, deep blue eyes suddenly so soft, Sugawara couldn't help but feel fondness for the boy.
— You're a great player, and you're really valuable to the team. Relaxing a bit in practice every now and then won't change that.
If he saw Kageyama's eyes water up and his lower lip tremble, well- no one really had to know.
— Thank you.
Suga's lips turned upwards in a warm smile, and he placed a reassuring hand on his teammate's shoulder.
— Of course. We really appreciate you, aight'? Try to relax a bit. You'll be just fine, and we all need to rest a bit right now anyways.
Kageyama nodded and looked at the floor.
Suga was fairly good at reading his friends, at comforting them and knowing what they needed to hear. At taking care of them. And right now, looking at that tall, genius player sitting down infront of him, shoulders heavy and eyes soft in something that looked like insecurity, like racing anxious thoughts inside his head- Sugawara thought Kageyama needed a hug.
He was fairly good at reading his friends. So why would Kageyama be an exception?
He got slightly closer to the boy, his movements thoughtfully slow as he dared to wrap his arms around Kageyama's body. He was careful, as if any sudden movement could scare him away. He felt Kageyama's muscles tense up, but he simply rested his cheek on the younger's head. Everyone knew Kageyama had no trouble pushing anyone away if they got too comfortable in his personal space for his liking, after all. If he didn't like it, he'd certainly push Suga away without doubting it for a second.
Instead, he just melted in his arms.
Suga doesn't think he's ever seen him like that- eyes fluttered shut, a relaxed expression on his face. Kageyama let out a sigh that almost sounded relieved. Like he had been burning for the last few months, and Suga's body had suddenly put down the painful fire the second he pressed it against him in a hug. He dared rub gentle circles on the boy's back, tracing his shoulders and softly petting his hair.
And Kageyama just melted.
He melted, and let himself stay there- enveloped in the warmth of the hug for however long it took before one of them remembered they needed to get home. Suga didn't keep track of time; he didn't need to.
He would've let Kageyama stay like that, content and safe in his arms, for as long as he needed.

Test Results!
Hq Characters comforting you about your scores
Note: Not proofread. I wrote this for everyone who got any kind of grade back and felt like they didn’t do so well. I wrote more of how hq chatacters would comfort u but thats okay. First fic so sorry if this was bad lol!!!
Info: gn! reader!!! A minuscule hint of angst but mostly comfort/fluff
Characters: Hinata, Kenma, Sugawara, Kuroo, Kageyama
Hinata Shoyo
I feel like Hinata would be very reassuring and would be one of those people who would joke a bit by saying his score was lower or something like that. He would be very polite and try to cheer you up if you’re super bummed out.
You glared at the big red mark at the top of your paper. Shock and dissatisfaction filled your body as your eyes scanned for the mistakes you made. As you calculated your score out of a 100%, your orange haired friend appeared, breaking you out of your little trance.
“Hey name,” Hinata greeted with a questioning tone, “what happened ?” He had noticed your distressed state and wanted to check up on you.
“Hi Shoyo.” you quietly greeted back. You looked up at your concerned friend and you felt your heart swell up. You had never done this badly on a test and felt horrible! You couldn’t even imagine how much of a let down you could be to your parents. “I’m really sad because I didn’t get the score I wanted even after all my studying!” You explained with stress evident in your voice.
Hinata looked down at your paper “ Name, don’t feel down, if it makes you feel better I got a way lower score than you.” He pats his hand on your shoulder as a way to soothe your unease. “I know you studied really hard and the next test you’ll ace,” Hinata exclaims, “I just know it!”
“Thanks Sho, I really appreciate it.” You responded to his words, his brown eyes filled with passion and certainty.
“You could also get tutoring with me and Kageyama if you want!” Hinata suggested.
“No thanks,” you chuckled, “I don’t want to overwhelm and burden Yachi even more.”
“Hey!!”
Kenma Kozume
I believe that Kenma would not really be on the comfort side and more of the “idrc I wont judge you for that kind of thing” side. Besides being a super smart setter and strategist, I’m not entirely sure if he would be a perfect score or close to a perfect score type of guy.
The library was nice and quiet, only a few people there besides yourself. You opened up your laptop, biting your nails while clicking for your score. You had heard your professor dropped grades for the quiz that you weren’t so sure on. You studied real hard because of that unsureness. The white illumination from the computer shined onto your face as you opened up your grade from the quiz. Your heart dropped and a feeling of frustration came over you.
“Name.” Kenma quietly called out to you, walking up to your table.
Shoot, you totally forgot that you promised to meet up with Kenma at the library to study for a midterm today. You were too caught up with shock from your results to remember.
“Hi Kozume!” You tried greeting him with some excitement to mask how you were truly feeling. As he was unpacking his study material and getting ready to review, he was talking to you about a new video game he wanted to buy. Usually you would look at him or ask questions to keep up with the conversation, but his observant self noticed something. You were a bit distant today.
“Name,” Kenma asked with suspicion,” are you okay? You seem a bit off.” His vigilant cat-like eyes seemed to catch everything.
You sighed as you hesitantly turned your laptop to face his eyes, the screen showing your quiz score. “I totally bombed that test and I feel so awful about it.” you mumbled as you looked down at your lap with shame.
“Hey,” Kenma stated firmly, “don’t feel ashamed I wont judge or anything stupid like that.” His golden orbs connected with yours. “If you want, we can study together more often so you can feel more confident on tests.” He suggested, genuinely wanting to help you.
“Yeah that sounds really nice.” you said with appreciation. You were really grateful for him saying he isn’t judging you. You thought that was really sweet.
Sugawara Koushi
I believe he is a person who would be super comforting and if you asked him to help you study for next time, he would be on top of it and low-key a bit strict. I love suga smm!!!
You were right next to Sugawara when you got your test outcome. You were so excited and filled with confidence when checking your test. Those emotions all got thrown out the window and were replaced by surprise and panic.
“Oh my gosh!!” You cried out. You didn’t expect to get this low. What should you do now? Should you ask your teacher for any extra credit or something? Many different questions were flashing through your head.
Sugawara had noticed this and wanted to check up on you. “Hello? Name?” he asked, “are you okay?” He saw the dispirited facial expression you had and connected the dots. Sugawara then saw small tears and knew he had to do something to console you. He understood how hard you worked for this quiz so he wanted to acknowledge that.
“Hey,” Sugawara looked into your eyes, both of his hands on your shoulders, “please don’t cry, you worked so hard!” He really felt like hugging you and wanted to propose a really good idea.
His tone was soft and reassuring, “We could study together for the next test, yeah?” Sugawara embraced your downhearted figure and held you in a quick hug. “I wont promise that I wont be a little strict or firm, is that okay?”
You giggled at his statement, “I would love that.” You sniffled and felt that you could really get the score you wanted on your next quiz.
Kuroo Tesuroo
Certified Chem Nerd!!!! Would try to cheer you up with his good flattery skills and he is a good teacher so I think he would be an amazing tutor as well! Love him!
You opened up your laptop, hoping and begging for one thing. That would be a score above a 90% on this midterm test for chemistry. You knew your friend Kuroo would probably get an 100%, so you hoped to get something near or exactly that score. You clicked the test result link and your eyes went wide.
You felt your heart start to speed up and your head felt a bit lighter. You wanted to think that your site was bugged or something, but after the 20th time refreshing, to no avail it was the same super low score you didnt even imagine of getting. You really wanted to ask what Kuroo got because you were so confused on how you got certain questions wrong and needed guidance.
You pulled out your phone and ringed him up. “Hi, this name?” Kuroo asked with a chirpy tone. You could hear some sort of video game ost with aggressive button clicking in the background. He’s probably with Kenma right now.
“Yeah heyy Tetsu,” you quietly responded with a bit of shame in your voice, “ are you busy right now? I really need to ask you about some things from the chem midterm.”
“Ohh that thing? Sure I got you.” Kuroo replied. The next thing you hear is something that Kuroo is telling to Kenma and some ruffling, probably from a bag. “So what do you need help with, Name?”
“Ohh a couple of things,” you said with a bit of hesitant embarrassment, “I got a really low score…” You fiddled with the hem of your shirt as you spoke.
“I appreciate you coming to my name, you’re a super hard worker and I admire you for that.” Kuroo stated with nothing but honestly in his voice. “I could help you since I think i’m pretty good at chemistry,” Kuroo suggested, “wanna meet up later?”
You jumped up and down and felt so lucky to have a friend like Kuroo. “Yes omg thanks!!!” You blurted out, cheeks a but red from how eager you sounded. But honestly you didn’t care and were super thankful for this opportunity.
“Anything for your name.” Kuroo chuckled with sincerity and hung up the phone.
Kageyama Tobio
As much as I hate to say this, with all love, kageyama is not the sharpest tool in the shed in terms of academics. He would do that thing like he did hinata and boasts how he got a lower score just to be competitive. But in all honesty, I don’t think he would care about it because volleyball for life lol.
You got a low score on the entrance exam for high schools. You were super disappointed in yourself, not able to go to your dream school Shitorizawa. You wanted to tell Kageyama and ask him what he got since he most likely got a scholarship for his amazing setting skills.
“Kageyama!” You called and ran up to him. “Hey,” you asked, “where are you choosing to go to highschool?” Maybe he got to go to Shitorizawa and set for the best of the best?
“Karasuno because I heard Coach Ukai is coming back,” Kageyama responded curtly.
“Wait,” you were shocked he didnt say Shitorizawa and wanted to know more, “You didnt get a scholarship?”
Kageyama sighed as he explained his side of his experience “I bombed the academic test ( not shocked btw) and a scholarship never came so im going to karasuno.”
“Ohhh that makes sense,” you said, “I got a pretty low score so I dont even know which one I want to go to.”
“Hah I probably got a lower grade that you!” Kageyama laughed.
“How is that a flex? “ You giggled as you walked home together.

Hi hiii :)) your writing is amazing mwah mwah. Perfection.
Anyways just wanted to request a Kageyama x reader, who just happens to be oikawa’s younger sister who is also very into volleyball. People get shocked that she’s Oikawa sister since their personalities are so different but they look somewhat alike (they’re both tall and pretty hahah). Kageyama was watching the girls teams play at the tournament since theirs finished and he kinda got obsessed with the way she plays and obviously reader looked amazing 🤭🤭 so he approaches her after the game not knowing she’s Oikawa’s sister

Kageyama chose to sit and watch a few more teams play their respective tournament bracket while waiting for their bus to pick them up. It would be a long ride home. He would zone out, rest, and get away from the buzzing, orange fly in his ear then.
Right now, in the middle of Aoba Johsai's last set, he kept on the edge of his seat with a firm brow.
"She's like Azumane," Hinata sighed, about a five minutes behind Kageyama's own observations.
It took not only a stellar performance, but a timeout and penalty because you broke three of Date Tech number 8's fingers with your last spike for Hinata to make that connection.
The penalty costed your team their last two points. You were called off the court for the next 4 minutes, he barely caught your dewy face made of stone. Both audiences were in an uproar- one more justified than the other- but Kageyama had to side with you because he needed to watch you play more. He might not get the chance again.
Number 8 should've taped her fingers. Better yet, she shouldn't have tried to keep blocking you.
You not only knew how to get around it, but the way you worked with your setter, and the unmatched control and strength in your swing made blocks impossible.
"I didn't think this kind of thing happened with the girls," Hinata mumbled, craning over Kageyama to get a look at you off-court.
Kageyama shoved him off and rolled his eyes at the assertion. "Obviously, dumbass."
A smattering of Johsai's male team were taking the hit harder than even you, at the edge of the bleachers.
Oikawa led Watari, Yahaba, and Mattsu, and Hanamaki in their 'Crybaby' chants. They were on their way to earning another penalty for your team, deterred only by Iwa, who was about the only person alive that could successfully shut it down.
Now both of the teams were in a tense battle, both genuinely angry at one another for taking needed players off. It was a rigid one-point dual for minutes.
He had a limited view of you as it played out- tough and stiff as just about everyone working for your team took turns talking to you; Coach, advisor, manager, teammates. Assumedly all "It's not your fault," "Keep your head up," "8 will be alright" and the like. You were their Ace, for sure.
4 minutes was enough time to assume their girls' team would meet the same unfortunate fate as the boys today against Karasuno. It was why all the Johsai guys were leaned over the railing, screaming at every play, because they just couldn't take another devastating loss.
He didn't realize how much they needed you until they let you out, unfortunately timed straight into an even-scored serve.
"(F/n)!!" Oikawa shouted, above the roar of the audience once they all realized you were released and put in the back position.
Kageyama watched you look up- that was your name? How did he know your first name?
The rest of the Johsai team joined him when he cried, "Break it!!"
Your big, pretty grin raised Kageyama to his feet. He had to see this.
Your ritual was silent and rode the time out to the very last second. A sigh of breath on the ball, another good luck spin, then up into a jump--
WHAM!!
A loud, clean, cross-court serve to win the game for Johsai. No volley. Just a brutal, final blow to Date Tech's morale. They sank into the floor as your school flew into a frenzy and celebrated a satisfying victory.
That serve was familiar, but Kageyama didn't get to dwell on its origin too much before Hinata yanked him out of his thoughts.
"You should talk to her!"
He was too close, and he could feel his face warming up, so he shoved Hinata's head to the side and started walking away.
"You clearly like her," Hinata muttered.
A quick turn of his head, with a very mean expression, shut him up- but it didn't help the heat crawling up the back of his neck, and it didn't reduce the truth in Hinata's argument. Just his volume.
No amount of brooding or pride would get him any closer to you. Caught between the choice of rejoining his team or making his existence known, he turned sharp on his heels.
And Hinata knew better than to speak and revel in his victory just yet. Kageyama would probably screw this up.
When they were coming quietly up on Aoba Johsai's designated spot, Hinata scanned the crowd of girls for you, and despite the many distractions, found an interesting twist. Oikawa let you down from a monster hug and it was clear his dark-haired counterpart was too in-his-head to notice.
Kageyama bit a shudder back at the sight of so many people crowded up. He had no real reason to approach you, no connection, no excuse other than the truth.
"I think--,"
"Don't talk to me." Kageyama snapped, short on patience. He pushed his hands through his hair and added, "Don't even act like you know me. Just... be somewhere else."
Hinata pushed a giggly smile down. He split off and decided to pick Iwa's brain for some tips.
Kageyama rubbed his hot face in his sobering absence- he'd have to gather his courage alone.
You were leaned over a bench full of various duffle bags, trying your best to quiet your mind with all the celebration behind you, when a presence broke through your focus.
When you looked up, it wasn't a teammate or one of your brother's friends- it was somebody new. Somebody cute, and tall enough.
"Hi?" You glanced around, but found that he was indeed addressing you with an unbroken stare, "Uh- nice to meet you?"
You weren't nearly as mean as the game made you. You were like Azumane, in the way that you seemed quite kindly when you spoke. You were far prettier, too.
"Hey," He muttered, glancing around for a moment in a dismissive fashion, "That was a good game."
Confusion was evident on your face, but you were grateful for the compliment anyway, "Thank you!"
You went back to packing your bag. He was nothing short of lost, fumbling hard with no desire to be upfront and equipped with no other reason to speak with you.
The proximity granted him the clarity to see that you were taller than he thought. Your face was much softer up close, your smile way cuter than the grimace you wore for most of the game. You were too nice for breaking through so many blocks and scoring so many points.
When you realized he was still standing there, you zipped up your bag and faced him again, grasping at straws for something to say. You glanced at his jacket.
"Oh! You play for Karasuno?"
He evaded your gaze shortly after meeting it. He nodded and put his hands in his pockets.
It wasn't necessarily a call-out; you realized his team had triumphed over your brother's earlier today only right after asking him. He must've been able to avoid suspicion in all the commotion.
"What do you play?" You pressed.
"Setter," He answered a little straighter.
He certainly was a good height. He met your gaze, which was more than you could say for most guys. You clocked him as a perfect stranger to start but as you glanced around his handsome features, you began to piece together those two facts-- something was off.
When you opened your mouth to ask for his name, all that came out was a startled reaction to an arm, heavy around your shoulders.
"Well, well, well!"
You rolled your eyes, "Oh my god..."
"If it isn't The King- here to rub our faces in his false win!"
Kageyama squinted, his nose a little scrunched at the nickname, the insinuation, but most of all the contact in front of him. This wasn't going at all to plan. It was like rock bottom was only getting dug deeper around him.
You shook off Oikawa's arm and, despite having no reason to, defended him, "He didn't say anything like that, Toru. Fuck off."
Oikawa huffed like the big baby he was and crossed his arms over his chest instead.
"He doesn't need to. That's just how he thinks."
"Stop projecting," Kageyama spat. He glanced between you now, wary of the fact that you might be dating.
"How do you know each other?"
You asked Toru, specifically.
When you shifted to look at him, there was a thick intensity to the air between them. It wasn't an enjoyable experience, having to brave the rigid atmosphere by yourself. It was like they needed a room.
"They were on the same team at Kitagawa!" A delightful blur of orange cut in.
After such a demanding, arduous game today, this labyrinth of a conversation and all the odd strangers were getting old, fast. You didn't have a whole lot of time to absorb every bit of information. So they went to the same middle school-- great. That did not explain a damn thing. Now this kid looked familiar, too.
Instead of keeping on that train, you took a big breath to introduce yourself to the shorter guy.
"Nobody asked you."
Your face fell. The ball of sunshine faded in a flash. Now everyone was stiff.
"That was mean." You stated, unable to let it slide after a moment of deliberation.
Kageyama looked shocked, like he either didn't realize what he said was cruel, or he didn't expect anyone to call him out on it. You figured it was the latter, given Hinata's sad, no-retaliation reaction.
"Are you Hinata?" You heard yourself guess. There were only so many 5'3 ginger players here- especially none that caused as much of a stir as him.
Hinata nodded fervently and you grinned with a hand outstretched, "Well, it's nice to meet the legend himself."
Delighted as he was, he didn't take your compliment in the slightest. He shook your hand with two smaller ones and you watched his blush spread right to his ears.
"Legend?! You're the legend! We saw your game- that was so awesome!! How do you put that much BOOM in your spike?! I didn't think--"
You laughed chiefly at the 'Boom,' then at his excited rambling.
When he said 'we,' you glanced to his dark-haired friend and pieced together that they must have been there together. He still looked like he was taking your comment personally.
It truly all fell apart at his feet. Oikawa was talking at him, but he couldn't hear a word. He watched past his shoulder as Hinata took his spot, dazzling you with his stupidity and enthusiasm with so much ease, so quickly. How did you know the runt and not the guy who threw his sets?
The thought occurred to him that he had something to learn from Hinata about talking to girls, but it pissed him off so bad that his expression begged a smartass comment.
"Woah- watch out, ugly. Your face might get stuck like that!" He cackled and jabbed a rigid finger at Kageyama's chest.
He choked when you threw a hard punch at him in the back. Hinata stopped rambling at your show of force and backed up a few steps.
"Stop being so childish! God, you're the fucking worst," You ignored his dramatic gasps of pain and looked right over Hinata's head to nod at his friend, "No wonder he doesn't like you."
Regardless of how mean the other guy was, you knew your brother was deserving of everything you said.
"I'm older than you!" He whined, "Ugh- Shit, that hurt! Don't talk to me like that--,"
It was only in this moment that Kageyama understood your dynamic was nothing to be competitive about. Oikawa was your older brother. As much as it was a cosmic 'Fuck you, Tobio,' he was relieved that your eligibility was up to speculation again. Your likeness to him was now obvious, and not a symptom of any familiarity effect.
"Then start acting like it," You rolled your eyes and ignored the yammering that ensued- you looked to that quiet, pretty boy.
He didn't even glance at Toru's impassioned blithering as soon as he felt your eyes on him, "What's your name? You never said."
"Kageyama." He muttered, soft and distant.
There was a faintness to his words, a cloudy preoccupation on his usually sharp expression whenever he addressed you. You understood his intentions now and couldn't help but feel flattered.
Once Toru realized he wasn't going to get any more attention, he deemed neither of the two idiots as a threat to you and joined his team further back into the hall. There was no way you'd entertain dating either of them, anyway.
"So," You spared a glance back long enough to know he wasn't returning, "What were you really here for?"
Kageyama looked a little shell-shocked. His mouth hung open a moment, and he glanced at the floor near your feet. His eyes trailed back up in a way that could've been incriminating, but you decided not to comment on it.
"I just- wanted to say good job. Really. Your technique... is cool."
He was so obvious. You failed to bite back a smile at his -seemingly rare- sincerity.
"It's awesome," Hinata emphasized. When you looked at him, he visibly tightened and felt the need to disguise it with more words, "Man, I wish I could hit as hard as you!"
A shy laugh found you- you covered it with your hand. Kageyama wished you wouldn't.
"I could show you sometime, if you want," You offered. Any excuse to play again was appealing, especially with someone who had this much energy.
He gasped and began speaking with only Kageyama in a big, animated fashion.
A teammate of yours tapped you to let you know your team would be leaving for the bus, soon. Before that, you hadn't noticed how much the crowd was thinning out. There were only a few of you left and you knew you needed to go soon.
You looked at your brother, eyeing your little trio from afar. He wouldn't leave without knowing you were alone and unfollowed. Especially with his antagonistic opinion on Karasuno, in general.
"I can give you my number if you want to set something up. I- really gotta get going."
Hinata's eyes grew wide and sparkly with joy- you could tell he appreciated the offer on a few levels. He quickly fumbled around for his phone and you exchanged numbers.
Kageyama eyed you like a hawk, but you pretended not to notice until you pulled away.
A brief glance at him was all it took to send him back to a broody, avoidant mess.
"Just send me a text when you wanna meet up, okay?" You slung your bag and pushed on his shoulder playfully before jogging away to catch your friend.
There was only a brief moment of silence while the pair walked to rejoin their team.
"I'll break your legs if you don't give me her number."
It didn't put the fear of God in him the way he wanted it to. Hinata, equipped with newfound courage and a dash of arrogance, laughed instead.
"What are you gonna do with it? She won't want a text from you--" He evaded the first swat, got clipped on the second, and almost dropped his phone when Kageyama lunged for his phone a third time.
Before he could succeed in a fourth attempt, Hinata took off in a sprint towards their exit with Kageyama lagging behind.
It was easier to dodge the swarms of other teams and visitors with his smaller frame, but once they reached the end of the hall, it would be up to the mercy of their team to hear his pleas and save him.
