K-Pop has an Overconsumption problem.
Something that I feel isn't really talked about among K-Pop fans is the fact that there is a very real overconsumption problem going on. Around SNS I see a lot of people calling out the Stanley cup girlies for how counterintuitive it is to be excessively buying a reusable product and it made me think about the excessive consumption among K-Pop stans. It is completely normalized to buy 10-20 (or more) of the same album for the hopes of securing a fancall, or a biases photocard, all in the name of "collecting" because it's a "hobby." But at what point does it cross the line between a hobby and being overconsumption? I'm not innocent in this craze, I own a few versions of the same album too, but I really try not to buy multiple of something because it just seems unnecessary. In a time where physical album sales are having a comeback, I really wonder how much of those numbers are natural and how much is has crossed that line into excessive. Feel free to add your opinions. I want to know if this is something else that people have noticed.

I got a package in the mail today! I wonder what it could be?
Oh! I remember now! There was a Black Friday sale with free shipping at LightUpK last week, so I decided to show some love for my fave k-band Xdinary Heroes and bought both their mini-albums. Here they are:
Seriously they should call the new album OverSIZE if you ask me, that thing is enormous. But let’s take a look at Hello, World first…
JYP really committed to the No Plastic Case agenda this year. The HW booklet slides out of a mock iPad case made of cardboard, very clever.
Opening it up, the inclusions are cool too — love the pop-up card with all the band members, and the stickers are very shiny. I pulled Jungsu for the photocard, which I’m not complaining about, and O.de for the foldout (if any O.de biased Villains want a trade, let’s talk). Now let’s see what came inside Overload…
Now we’re talking. Both members in my bias line (Gun-il and Jooyeon) and my bias wrecker (Jun Han). I don’t collect or display photo cards, but I still feel pleased when I pull my biases. And the stickers and translucent standee that came with this album are so cool! I almost feel bad not to display them.
Thank you for attending my completely unsolicited album unboxing, have a good evening!

Week 5: Digital Community and Fandom
Hi, welcome to my blog! In this blog, I’ll be talking about the Digital Community, specifically Fandom.
As we all know in today’s society, being in a fandom is like having an ‘identity’ in a specific community. One of the biggest fandoms we know is from K-pop. Each K-pop boy/girl groups are known to have its fandom with a name and specially made lightstick merchandise for fans to use as a form of support during music shows and concerts. This ‘identity’ gives people a sense of belonging within the community. I am also part of the K-pop fandom of boy groups like NCT and Seventeen.
Social media plays an important and huge role in fandoms. According to Celenza (2022), popular social media sites like Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok allow fandoms to come together, interact, communicate, and exchange information with one another to keep everyone informed about events and updates related to their particular fandom community on these various platforms. Moreover, it is also essential for idols to engage with their fans through social media because this is one of the ways for them to interact with their fans and maintain parasocial relationships. For example, the K-pop group NCT used to do ‘Menpa’ (which stands for ‘mention party’) where they would tweet something and reply to fans’ comments. This is one way to keep fans attached and engaged so that they would not feel like their support is one-sided or unreciprocated.
With fans’ loyalty, companies use this as an opportunity to boost their revenue and sales. K-pop album comes with CDs, photobooks, photocards and other inclusions. Over the years, photocards have become a huge sensation. Now, ‘What exactly is a photocard?’ you may ask. It is a selfie of the idol printed on a card and fans can carry it with them anywhere, everywhere.
Photocard comes randomly in the album so we would not know which members are given until the album is unboxed. Mainly because of this, fans no longer purchase music albums for the CD but rather the photocard itself and they would purchase plenty of albums to try their luck in pulling their desired photocard. Fans would also trade photocards with other fans online or physically in order to obtain their desired photocard. In addition, fans would create trends with photocards where they showcase their photocard collections.
Overall, the essential structure and changes that have been evolving within society have resulted in the dramatic and expressive change in fan behavior. Fans have gained more power and rights in regards to the culture within this digital media age evolution. (Fiorella 2023) According to Liao (2021), fans now have more influence, as seen by two factors: first, they are actively creating and sharing their own original content online, and second, they have more channels for interaction with the entertainment industry.

okay I’m no expert when it comes to sales and industry dynamics but I truly fully believe that K-pop reached its height and all these inflated sales and records purely cuz of covid. this isn’t to discredit anybody’s work and of course there was already a spotlight on it but the level it reached was purely cuz of covid cuz with everybody locked up inside a lot of people just needed lighthearted content to binge and that’s what kpop provided. I might be fully wrong about the prediction but I do believe that with lockdowns not happening kpop will minimise a lot more than what stans expect at the moment. I just find it so fascinating and sometimes I do wonder if Covid didn’t happen then what would the kpop landscape look like? im sorry for any mistakes cuz English isn’t my first language
sorry for late reply anon!
i think covid was def a factor but sale numbers started rising before that. like i remember when digital downloads took over and very popular idols weren't cracking 500k sales because market saturation. albums also had less gimmicks, like photocard poster and that's it. exo is the group that brought back massive sales, for whiiiiile they weren't considered a legit million sellers because sm produced multiple versions of albums. now it doesn't seem like an issue anymore... g.o.d were the last idol million sellers (fun fact first million sellers in korea was a band hyunsik's father was in)
i do think covid cranked things to the max. whatever was going on already became accelerated(?). no doubt sale numbers would continue to go up as kpop became more known abroad and buying albums became more accessible, but covid did cause things to skyrocket. and you can tell kpop's growth goes hand in hand with korea's economy, because things are slowing up there. there's gotta be some shady stuff going on, like buying back albums to hike up sale numbers artificially (cube did that to 4m in 2012 were caught immediately...) as digital chart manipulation in 2010s was a thing companies like starshit got away with. like at this point i wonder if authorities tasked with catching fraud are just looking the other way, ignoring how album sales numbers look unreal
i think you can gauge kpop's rise abroad by how many youtube videos about "dark side of kpop" popped up. a lot of them at best silly at worst misinformed. active entertaiment industry in every country is Bad. kpop was based on japanese and american teen idol systems if you ask Me, and both of these are... yea. lee sooman especially basically copied everyone's homework, sm rookies are exactly what johnny juniors are minus i guess backdancing for senior idols
covid caused things go online and tbh stuff you wouldn't be able to access in 2019 was uploaded officially in 2020. being able to stream kpop concerts online??? unthinkable before that
shipping things from korea became harder to do because korea post became super restrictive, i ordered some kbeauty items in feb 2020 from ebay, sellers couldn't ship them and just refunded me. things shipped in jan/feb came like 3 months later 🫣 i stopped buying albums by that point so idk how that affected individual buyers, but group order accounts are all over twitter/fb so idk
personally covid caused a lot of hurt and pain in my life i wish it didn't happen at all. and that govt's response wasn't basically 'if you die, you die' but that's besides the point
and your english is fine! don't worry! im not a native speaker either

also shamelessly stolen from @/here4theheartbreak!
Groups you started stanning: i've been told loossemble count as a new group, so loossemble! i don't stan that easily, lol. i guess i should note that atz officially took over as my favourite group, though 😅
New ult biases?:
Idol(s) who got the most of your simping: hj, hwa, jiu, dami... and neighbours: chan, changbin and felix from them skz, taemin
Most streamed group(s): ateez, deukae, skz, svt, bts (mysteriously!), rv, and mgmt mcnd's last album was bomb, so these guys as well
Most streamed soloist(s)?: taemin, agust d, (a looooooong break) sunmi.
Top K-Pop song(s) of this year (opinion or streaming, you choose): i REFUSE to talk about that one txt album so BOUNCY BOUNCY BOUNCY. and also bouncy have i mentioned her. i legit forgot about it, but according to sptf rover is my 7th most listened song. 👍OKAY. and enha's sacrifice, absolutely mesmerizing, and obviously obligatorily darumdarimda super by svt.
Top debut this year: i'm not really qualified to say, tbh! i liked xikers (i guess they'll be my main source of hongmusic, sobsob), but loossemble knocked it out of the park by delivering a debut album with absolutely zero skips, so!
Choreographies you learned: i don't dance, let alone learn choreographies! man, i was kinda surprised when i found out kpop is apparently chock-full of people who just. learn kpop choreo and dance to it. fascinating
Albums/merchandise you bought:
LOTS of ateezes, though mostly from resale. the loossemble debut album! two deukae albums. the japanese all-ateez magazine (主婦の友...), which was super cute! surprisingly, i found myself buying photocards even though i told myself i wouldn't, because cmon (but they were resale and cheap lol). someone on the resale app put their first gen lightiny on sale, and i like the design more than the second gen, but in the end i made the responsible decision and didn't buy it lol
New K-Pop mutuals you made: i don't make mutuals easily, especially when it comes to kpop lol, but if i see someone in my notifs -- bonus if they leave tags -- i am looking. observing. checking out. frequenting perhaps. 👀
#shrimp thoughts#i need a meme tag#i think this is the best piece of hj fanart i'll ever make. nothing can top this

You little fuckers need to stop opening albums and stealing photocards and inclusions 😒
Literally all the FML albums were open.
No wonder album sales in the US are shit, who’s gonna buy an album with no inclusions?
Target needs to start locking up their K-pop albums, instead of baby formula and laundry detergent 🙄

ATEEZ Scores Third Top 10 on Album Sales Chart With ‘Spin Off: From the Witness’
ATEEZ captures its third top 10 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart (dated Jan. 14) as Spin Off: From the Witness debuts at No. 2. The set sold 40,000 copies in the U.S. in the week ending Jan. 5, according to Luminate. The eight-member South Korean group previously visited the top 10 with The World EP.1: Movement (No. 2 in 2022) and Zero: Fever Part.3 (No. 6 in 2021).
CDs comprise a little over 39,000 of Spin Off’s sales for the week, while digital album purchases comprise 1,000. Like many K-pop releases, the CD configuration of Spin Off was issued in collectible deluxe packages (six), each with a standard set of items and randomized elements (photocards and posters).
Meanwhile, at No. 1 on Top Album Sales, Taylor Swift’s Midnights spends an 11th consecutive, and total, week atop the list (58,000 sold; up 7%). Midnights has the most weeks at No. 1 since Adele’s 25 collected 11 total nonconsecutive weeks in late 2015 and early 2016. Midnights has the most consecutive weeks atop the list since the Titanic soundtrack scored 16 weeks in a row at No. 1 (the entirety of its No. 1-run) in 1998. Midnights also ties Fearless as Swift’s albums with the most weeks at No. 1 on Top Album Sales.
Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart ranks the top-selling albums of the week based only on traditional album sales. The chart’s history dates back to May 25, 1991, the first week Billboard began tabulating charts with electronically monitored piece count information from SoundScan, now Luminate. Pure album sales were the sole measurement utilized by the Billboard 200 albums chart through the list dated Dec. 6, 2014, after which that chart switched to a methodology that blends album sales with track equivalent album units and streaming equivalent album units. For all chart news, follow @billboard and @billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram.
RM’s Indigo falls 2-3 on Top Album Sales (9,000; down 41%), Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours rises 5-4 (9,000; down 26%), Harry Styles’ former No. 1 Harry’s House dips 4-5 (8,000; down 38%) and Michael Jackson’s Thriller descends 3-6 (nearly 8,000; down 45%). Tyler, the Creator’s chart-topping Igor is a non-mover at No. 7 (7,000; down 39%), Kendrick Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d city falls 6-8 (nearly 7,000; down 44%), Arctic Monkeys’ AM climbs 15-9 (6,000; down 28%) and SZA’s Ctrl jumps 21-10 (5,000; down 27%).
In the week ending Jan. 5, there were 2.123 million albums sold in the U.S. (down 22.4% compared to the previous week). Of that sum, physical albums (CDs, vinyl LPs, cassettes, etc.) comprised 1.772 million (down 24.6%) and digital albums comprised 351,000 (up 8.3%).
There were 681,000 CD albums sold in the week ending Jan. 5 (down 11.4% week-over-week) and 1.081 vinyl albums sold (down 31.1%). Year-to-date CD album sales stand at 681,000 (up 9% compared to the same time frame a year ago) and year-to-date vinyl album sales total 1.081 million (up 36.8%).
Overall year-to-date album sales total 2.123 million (up 16.4% compared to the same year-to-date time frame a year ago). Year-to-date physical album sales stand at 1.772 million (up 24.5%) and digital album sales total 351,000 (down 12.4%).

[Update 10/09/17] K-Pop Photocard Sale/Trade & Wishlist
So first off… long time no see… I haven’t been active on this account for quite some time and to be honest I went completely off collecting any photocards. I basically just stuck to ones I got in albums and that was that.
However recently I’ve felt the need to at least try and keep up to date with my VIXX collection. They are my priority first and foremost. This is mainly a wishlist as in reality I have very little to trade or sell but I’ll be putting up those items either way.
Terms/Conditions/Rules etc.
- I’m ONLY looking for VIXX items only minus specific trades (all will be stated in wishlist down below)
- I have a couple of cards which will be trade only (4 girl group cards to be exact) and who I’m trading for will be stated.
- I am shipping worldwide from the UK and will only be accepting PayPal as a payment method! :)
- QYOP (I’m terrible at prices so please let me know what you’d be willing… I have some ideas in mind for price but feel free to offer anyway)
- Please be aware of shipping. I use hard protector sleeves (which I’ve completely forgotten the official name of whilst writing this - can you tell I’ve been away for a while! :P) *EDIT - I found out it was Toploaders which was the word I was after! XD* as well as a little extra padding/protection where I can…. this can bump up the weigh ever so slightly and therefore price.
- Trade for trade rules. I will not do a ‘you trade first’ or ‘I trade first’ thing. We send off at the same time. Photo evidence of receipts must happen. The majority of post offices will give you a ‘proof of postage’ receipt if you ask. I won’t trade with people again and I will call out bad traders if these rules aren’t followed.
- I expect to be able to get in contact with you during our ‘business transaction’ (;D), I’ll let you know about when I’m posting items or when items have arrived and out of respect I expect the same.
- Please expect that I will reject offers, whether or not I’m buying, selling or trading I will reject offers if I don’t deem them suitable. That and the fact that I’m not rich so I have to be careful.
- When I’m buying or trading, I expect full photo proof (preferably with you username written down in the picture - shows its definitely yours then) and preferably some examples of previous transactions. I’ve luckily never been duped before… but I know it happens and I’m not stupid.
- Talking of photo evidence… I will provide photos upon request and in the same manner stated above. (full photos, username in photo etc)
I think that’s it for rules and regulations etc. If I think of anything I add it in due course! :)
Trade only -
~ Oh My Girl Arin (Oh my girl - 1st Mini) – ONLY FOR – Seunghee ~ Oh My Girl Mimi and Arin (Unsure which albums they are from but its either Pink Ocean (Liar Liar), Listen to my Word or Closer) – ONLY FOR – Seunghee or Binnie ~ GFriend Eunha (Flower Bud) – ONLY FOR – Umji
Trade or Sale -
~ BTS Rap Monster photocard (Young Forever) ~ BTS J-Hope Polaroid (Young Forever) ~ BtoB Peniel (Complete) ~ EXO Suho (Pop Up card - SUM card thing) ~ BEAST/Highlight Yoseob (Beast album - Time) ~ B.A.P Himchan (One Shot) ~ B.A.P Youngjae (One Shot) ~ VIXX LR Ravi Standee (Beautiful Liar) ~ VIXX LR Leo sticker (Beautiful Liar) ~ SHINee Minho (The misconception of me) ~ SHINee Minho (The Misconception of you) ~ SHINee Minho (The Misconception of Us) ~ SHINee Minho (Odd Ver B?)
I also have some other EXO Xiumin and Chen cards which I’m debating whether or not I want to keep so if you looking for either of them hit me up and I’ll let you know what ones they are and if I want to trade them.
Wishlist -
(be prepared - its long… and all VIXX)
*also just a note that my ultimate priority is Leo and N cards but I’m trying to collect them all anyway*
# Hyde - Ravi, Hongbin & Hyuk # Jekyll - Leo, Ken & Hyuk # Chained Up PC (Freedom Ver) - Ken, Ravi, Hyuk # Chained Up PC (Control Ver) - N, Ken, Ravi, Hyuk # Chained Up Leaflet things (Freedom & Control) - Need All (minus both of Leo’s and Hyuks Control ver) # Zelos - N, Ken, Hongbin, Hyuk # Hades - N, Leo, Ravi, Hongbin, Hyuk # Kratos - Leo, Ken, Ravi, Hongbin, Hyuk # Shangri La - Need to work out which versions of what I have so offer away if you have ANY of these and I’ll tell you if I have them or not. # (LR) Beautiful Liar - Same with these cards as above, offer if you have any and I’ll let you know # (LR) Whisper - Leo # (Japanese) Darkest Angels - Leo # (Japanese) Can’t Say - again the same with Shangri La and Beautiful Liar, offer away… although I have all the pairings cards so not them. # (Japanese) Depend on Me - All (Minus N’s version A ((?)))
And that’s it. If you have any questions feel free to send me a DM and I’ll get back to you ASAP :) Thanks once again… and feel free to spread this around as well. Help will be much appreciated. Thank you! <3
