“Win the Day” – JT

 Several times a year, and I believe I have shared this portion before, as I fill up pages in my journal, I come to a series of documents.  These articles, pieces of inspiration I’ve gathered and saved over the years, have been, and continue to be instrumental in reminding me of where my head was when I started this journey.  They have directed and instructed me, during those times when I lose my way, back to the right trail.  Today was one of those where the time came to revisit these items.  It typically takes me an hour or so to reread and I like to spend time reflecting on those points that hit home to me, at that time.  It is funny because every time I revisit them, there is something different that catches my attention.  This morning, there were two items that struck me that I want to share.    

 First is from our 14-year-old daughter, Alaina, and it is from about 5 years ago, I think, maybe even longer??  If my memory serves me right, which is unlikely 😊, I had asked her and her sister to write down 3 things (she may have had 4) that they believe they do well. I think Isabella still has hers somewhere (I hope), but for some reason, I have kept Alaina’s with this group of papers through these years.  Today, I gave it back to her, I think it was time for her to review 😊 & I also share them with you.

1.       “To push myself beyond my limits and make people laugh.”

2.       “Be the best me every day and be respectful.”

3.       “That everyone should be happy & positive.” – I think this is an extra she snuck in & was highlighting a want 😊

4.       “To make people happy everyday and pushing through tough situations.”

5.       “To make people laugh and talk to people to help and work hard.” – another extra one I think 😊

 It is interesting to reflect on this and see where her headspace was at that time.  Would also be interesting to see where her headspace is now and how she would answer that same question!!  Another possible blog post? 😊

 The other is from a teacher, mentor, coach, dear friend & one of the inspirational people in getting me to write & share my journey.  We lost him almost 3 years ago but as you can see, his memory, teachings, and messages ring true today, and every day.  I’ve shared a few things from him and today it is a special message.  I was going to say, “in these uncertain times,” but need to stop there for a bit. We go through life with most times, and for some, all moments, being uncertain. Ironically read this same line today, “the only thing certain is death.” Very true!!  Yes, uncertainty is scary but also incredibly exciting. We don’t know what lies ahead & where this journey is going to end up. We do know who we are, how we feel, & where we are right in this moment. We also have the ability, and choice, to change that.  I know I lose that perspective often. Slowing down is necessary & leaning into what life is today is critical. It’s good to want to plan for tomorrow but, “if you ever want to make God laugh, tell him your plan.”

 Here is the note, word for word.

 “Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to get through this thing called death,

 I don’t know how to say goodbye, so I won’t.  I will just give you a little solace in some words that can help you through the sorrow or grief you must feel right now.  So, I will share some thoughts.

 So, if you cannot accept that I am not here as you would like, please try to accept that some of the most horrible things in life will likely happen to you or someone you love.  Know that tie makes all of them better, day by day, bird by bird.  Until then, fight hard and accept that you might lose some battles but that does not mean you have been defeated.  You will have a lot to say about that.  I hope you can hear me whispering, “Rise up and be a warrior… Be Open… for life!  You Got this!.. Dare Greatly! Win the day!” You will get over the loss of me by remembering me and clinging to those around you and embracing all the good swirling around, and it is, much like tissue paper and ticker tape at a parade. All things die. Know that the sun, too, will die one day.  On that day, as this, it will feel as though it had come too soon.  Isn’t that part of the beauty and genius of life? It has greater value precisely because it is so fragile and fleeting.  If history since creation were billions of years’ worth of night skies, my entire life was the single flicker, a lightening bug, but flicker and share my light I did (and so much you).

 Smile to know that possibility and hope dwell in every living soul, including yours, and they seek to come out and play with your destiny.  So, go into the shed out back from your house this week and design a dream for a friend or loved one, even if it is you. Sketch a yet-to-happen moment in your mind’s eye and move toward it. When you do these things, you can’t help but to smile and win each day with the bracing feeling of a quickening pulse and a full heart. You will stumble into happiness and it will feel a little like… magic.  And it is so OK to smile and laugh.  Don’t feel guilty and don’t feel like you don’t deserve it.  Get to work.  Start by being compassionate; first toward yourself-then others.  It won’t be easy, but it will be worth it. You have all the tools you need. And you can’t do it alone.

 So, try to see just a little more.  There are millions and millions of little, beautiful moments trying to collect all around you.  Pluck them out of the air!  You need only look to see them.  And they are everywhere; a billion brilliant lights strung together in a vast, sometimes dark universe of the human experience.  You can make them any time you wish, and you deserve them.  You deserve, in your soul, the feeling of joy you felt the first time you saw a litter of puppies or kittens.  Remember the childhood exhilaration that came from being thrown in the air and caught? See, your eyes and heart just realized it and you smiled inside! That was one of those moments- no more or less precious than any other, but very real.  There is another moment coming.  Are you looking?” - jrt
