Writing over at Lucasfilm.com, Lucas Seastrom sits down with Haunted Mansion director Justin Simien to discuss ILMVFX and their work on the 2023 Disney adaptation of the much-loved theme park attraction, one that's absolutely packed with easter eggs for lovers of the venerable attraction. A number of the prominently featured ghosts were performed by actors in costume and make-up. At times, ILM used digital doubles to replace them, each of which had to be modeled and textured. Others were entirely created with computer graphics, including the swarm of skeletal ghosts in the finale, which were original designs by the ILM Art Department. “The ghosts had a sort of x-ray feel to them,” says Georgiou. “It wasn’t a straightforward bone texture. We had to come up with how they glowed, both in day and night environments. They all had various types of clothing. Some had armor, or robes, or hoods. With all that comes a lot of creature work to get the costumes flowing properly. Then there are shots with hundreds and hundreds of them, as many as 600 or 700 at a time, which required crowd work. Our animation crew did hero shots, and they had the best time animating them. When they flank the Hatbox Ghost, they aren’t just standing there, but they’re chomping their teeth or doing little things with their hands. It’s subtle but it’s all there.” The fan-favorite Hatbox Ghost is part of the lore of the Disney Parks attraction, and as the film’s chief villain, many different components went into his creation. “On the set, we had a great stuntperson named Colin Follenweider,” explains Simien. “We spent a lot of time discussing the physicality of the Hatbox Ghost, why he would walk a certain way. So he was in a suit on the set with a blue face. Then with Jared [Leto], we captured his voice. Then all of that goes into a blender at ILM where we have a team of animators fine-tuning every aspect of the performance. It’s a real amalgamation of a few different traditions.”

I had a blast developing the campus map for Netflix’s “Dear White People”’s fictional Ivy League school Winchester University. Most of the show is shot at UCLA, with a few other locations - but full buildings are rarely shown. So I got to go google-map-cruising in the Ivies to cast the buildings, and try to get the mix of old and new you find on modern campuses. Many are directly evolved from some famous campus settings at Harvard, Yale and others - a bit tweaked to match settings from the show.  Get the shirts here:

Writing over at Lucasfilm.com, the always informative Lucas Seastrom sits down with the director of last years Haunted Mansion film Justin Simien to discuss the work done by Skywalker Sound on the Disney adaptation of the much-loved theme park attraction. Much of Simien’s approach to Mansion’s sound design was what he calls “a game of withholding. You don’t want to show certain things too soon.” Nelson adds that “it’s always helpful and wonderful when you have a shape that your filmmaker is presenting to you. Justin was very invested in the track. We knew what he wanted right down to how you might feel it build up as a character approaches a portrait in the hallway. The music was shaped in that way as well. The score is a great harkening to the original, but also [composer] Kris [Bowers] did these amazing builds. We’re paying attention to the music and to where the beats are.” As an example, Nelson explains the early scene when Travis (Chase W. Dillon) and his mother, Gabbie (Rosario Dawson), arrive at the Mansion, which they have recently purchased. What they don’t know, however, is how spooky their new home is. “From the moment we’re out of the car and up the steps, you hear a voice say, ‘Travis,’ and as he turns, you hear just a hint of the door open and it goes quiet,” explains Nelson. “He walks in with his footsteps and the rolling suitcase. Each moment has its little shape. Justin was really helpful in explaining what they wanted and didn’t want to hear. We finally get up to Travis’ room where you just hear the door handle. It’s a playground where you can kind of go crazy, but you also need to build into those specific moments, such as when the blanket falls off the portrait and you hear a voice whisper again, ‘Travis.’ All these components come together.” [amazon box="B0D1DHYFYR"]

In 2018 I had the pleasure of working with Netflix’s “Dear White People” creator Justin Simien to create a t-shirt design map of Winchester University, the fictional Ivy League school featured in the show (with a few easter-egg-y details). If you are not looking forward to Season 3, then you have not seen Seasons 1 & 2, or the movie. It’s a pretty amazing piece of television - hilarious, relevant, and meticulously written and produced.
