Building friendships is key to enjoying life as a whole and possibly more so as a college student or even high school student, but for some, making friends and meeting people can be hard. A lot of folks I know say they "don't like talking to people." However, after watching them, I know that isn't true. They actually enjoy talking about the right topics.

What they really mean is: They really hate small talk.

So do I.

But with the right questions you can meet people and not be stuck trying to muddle through small talk. You don't have to know a lot of questions. You just need a few that can give space for natural conversations to take place.

Every week I will post a new question for you to try out, keep if it works for you, and maybe share with others to help them make conversation. Definitely adjust it and make it your own.

When experimenting with layouts I found that I had difficulty because the conversations did not help to convey the message behind the books. So to develop my project further I have decided to start narrowing down possible conversation prompts.

I could ask my friends something around first year or first impressions of meeting me. this will give my audience an idea on why my friends started to talking to me and if their first impressions are still accurate now they have gotten to know me.

However, this may not help to show first year students that making new friends is not something to fear, because by focusing on first impressions it could cause them to focus on how they present themselves to others. This may lead them to not acting like their selves which could lead to more problems in the future,

Instead I could choose a conversation starter that focuses on questions that reveal more about the person. However, I will need to make sure these are fun or light to not cause awkward silences if my audience was to use it themselves. For example the question I asked my friends are fun and quirky. Asking them to describe their mind as an island makes them think creatively but also allows them to reveal small facts about them that may not come up in general conversation. Furthermore, asking what their favourite Sitcom or Tv shows, can lead to finding things you have in common with them that you may not know before. For example, when asking this question to Sim (Sondh, 2023b) I found that she likes Fresh Prince of Bel Air which I love watching. However, I did not know Sim liked watching the show even though I have known her for over 2 years.

Dating Intentionally: I just wrapped up a call with a 1:1 client who is dating again after a long term marriage and heart wrenching break up. It’s beautiful to experience how sovereign she is in this process as we have been working on shifting who she is subconsciously attracted to from a place of fullness. See, we often repeat cycles over & over because we keep our heads in the metaphorical sand refusing to take a long honest look at ourselves. The thing about a blind spot is you can’t see it. You don’t know it’s there. And the things you don’t know you don’t know, you can’t really do much about can you? Discerning an old pattern from a new start is partly rooted in the subtle feelings you get around someone. If you’re out to lunch & out of your body (aka not present- which includes overthinking, worrying, anxiety, over analyzing, running a constant commentary in your mind, judging, criticizing etc), you’re not present enough to catch the subtleties that guide the dating process. A lack of presence paired with a lack of self awareness about your own habits/patterns/blocks is what almost guarantees a repeat pattern with a new person. Also, if we’re chasing chemistry over soulful alignment we’re going to keep meeting the same relational challenges with a new person. People get all twisted about this, so let’s be clear I’m not saying you shouldn’t have chemistry with your person. But if it’s the only thing you have it’s just not going to go anywhere deep or fulfilling. You will absolutely be attracted to a person you have soulful alignment with, AND you’ll also have deep respect and appreciation for all the other aspects of them that make them them. From this place you can set a pace that feels good and grounding for BOTH people and explore the experience of physical and emotional intimacy when it’s most aligned instead of using it as a bargaining chip for commitment. 👉🏼Want to know more about how to date intentionally?
