Ellie Carpenter "What Are You Listening To" Interview (OL)

On their YouTube page

I wasn't going to do this but (1) someone asked really nicely and (2) Carpenter's disdain of "Call Me Maybe" made me laugh. I'm pretty much down to translate/transcribe whatever, just ask nicely and understand it might take me a bit of time to get to it. :)

I linked to the songs they discuss so you can judge their music tastes to your heart's content.

Blah blah standard disclaimers apply. I flagged it when the conversation was already in English / ie if it doesn't say "[in English]" in front of it that means the discussion was in French.

Jule: Hello everybody, happy to see you again. Welcome back for a new episode of "What Are You Listening To". In each episode, we're going to go for a drive with a men or women's player for Olympique Lyonnais to listen to their music choices, chat with them, get to know them a little bit better. And for this episode, Ellie Carpenter is with us. [in English] Ellie, how are you?

Carpenter: I'm good, how about you?

Jule: So we're talking in French to start?

Carpenter: Eh, yeah.

Jule: Okay, that works. Are you happy to be here with us?

Carpenter: Yeah. I'm very happy [to be here].

Jule: We're going to go for a drive, listen to some music, find out what you like, I'm going to show you what I like as well. I think that's going to be pretty cool. Sounds good?

Carpenter: Sounds good.

Jule: Okay, let's get started.

Jule: I asked you which songs you wanted us to listen to in the car. We have Louis in the backseat, who appreciates your song choices.

Carpenter: Oh yeah?

Jule: So he approves. He completely agrees [with your choices].

Carpenter: Okay.

Jule: So we're going to start with your favorite song at the moment.

Carpenter: Yeah, it's my favorite right now. For the moment.

Jule: For the moment?

Carpenter: Yeah, for the moment. It's the first song I listen to when I'm driving here [to work].

Jule: So when you're driving to the stadium, this is what you're listening to. [in English] Why do you like this song? Is it the rhythm, the atmosphere?

Carpenter: [in English] Yeah. And it's chill. And also I like Selena Gomez.

Jule: [in English] You listen to which style of music? Like in general?

Carpenter: [in English] R&B, chill, a bit of rap sometimes.

Jule: [in English] You chose a rap song that we will listen to.

Carpenter: [in English] I think I did, yeah.

Jule: [in English] Do you listen to some French songs?

Carpenter: [in English] Yeah, I do. I like French songs.

Jule: [in English] What kind of artists?

Carpenter: [in English] Aya Nakamura. I like Aya Nakamura.

Jule: [in English] So I put on this song, you will like it?

Carpenter: [in English] Yeah, it's my favorite one.

Jule: So you listen to this in the locker room?

Carpenter: Yeah.

Jule: And in training?

Carpenter: Yeah. I'm the DJ for the locker room. But I switch between English, French.

Jule: Okay. And did you decide that you were going to be the DJ? Or did they say "go for it, go for it"?

Carpenter: No, I think the girls [were like] "Ellie, go for it, go for it." Okay!

[Jule and Carpenter sing some more of the lyrics]

Jule: Did they explain the lyrics to you a little? Did they translate it?

Carpenter: The song? Yeah. Go on.

Jule: [in English] I don't know. Even in French it's really complicated sometimes.

Carpenter: It's complicated, yeah.

Jule: [in English] Because the word "catchana", I didn't know it before the song came out.

Carpenter: You know Janice Cayman, on the team? All the players call her Jaja.

Jule: Of course.

Carpenter: Like the song. Jaja!

Jule: [in English] We listened to some French songs. You're Australian, and you played most of your career in Australia.

Carpenter: [in English] Yeah.

Jule: [in English] Just a few years in Portland. And then you arrive in Europe. It's your first European experience. Is it difficult to move from Australia to France?

Carpenter: [in English] I think yes and no. Obviously with the language it's difficult, because it's a whole new language. I didn't know a word of French before I arrived.

Jule: [in English] You didn't know any words?

Carpenter: [in English] Nothing. Just bonjour (hello).

Jule: That's at least something.

Carpenter: But now, I speak [Carpenter gestures vaguely with her hand]

Jule: French?

Carpenter: French. I'm okay at it.

Carpenter: Do you know this artist?

Jule: [in English] I know this artist. I didn't know she was Australian. But I know [her] a little, I got one of her songs. She had one hit, but I don't remember the name.

Carpenter: Dance Monkey, maybe?

Jule: [in English] That's it. Because when I think of Australian artists, I think about Kylie Minogue. She's the first one that comes to mind.

Carpenter: I think I'm a bit young for that.

Jule: But is she still a star?

Carpenter: Yeah, yeah.

Jule: [in English] Why did you choose to speak out and listen to Tones and I?

Carpenter: I think she's a cool artist. I like her songs.

Jule: We listed to Aya Nakamura. I'd like to introduce you to classic French songs. We're going to take a listen, you'll tell us what you think of them.

Carpenter: [in English] Well normally I'm on the bus and I have my AirPods in. Not really a ritual, I just listen to music like this, to get me in the mood.

Jule: [in English] Do you spend a lot of time with your family, with your parents, doing karaoke?

Carpenter: In the car. Going to training every day.

Jule: [in English] Is difficult to be far away from them?

Carpenter: Sometimes. But it's normal for me, because I left Australia when I was 16. So it's normal.

Carpenter: [laughs] [in English] "Ellie, it's a calm moment." [in French] Because all the players, they think I'm crazy. Always crazy. They're like "Ellie, you're never calm." But I am! [in English] But they don't see me calm, you know.

Jule: [in English] I imagine when you go on holiday, you have the sunset and this song in the car, yeah. Perfect.

Jule: [in English] We're totally going to change the mood. Here we are calm, relaxed. Now it will not be the same.

Carpenter: [in English] This song gets me through all my rehab workouts. If I'm on the bike, you know... [in French] I hate the bike. I HATE it.

Jule: Me too. I hate it too.

Carpenter: [in English] My trainer, Remi.

Jule: [in English] Shoutout to Remi.

Carpenter: When it's a rehab session, I'm like "hang on, Remi. I need my song." And he knows it. He's like [scoffs] "Purple Lamborghini. Always." And I have it on repeat. [in English] It helps me so much.

Jule: So we asked you which song you didn't really like, which you were tired of listening to. And it was this one.

Carpenter: Oh, yeah. It was ... [in English] You know the song that's just been played too much, you know. [scoffs] But I still know every lyric to the song, because it's been played so much.

Jule: [in English] It was a big hit.

Carpenter: [in English] A big hit. But I've heard it so much, I can't. If it's on, I skip it. [reaches for the console]

Jule: Okay. [moves to change the song]

Carpenter: [in English] It's okay. I like it.

Jule: [in English]: You like it or not?

Carpenter: [in English] I don't, but I would listen to it.

Carpenter: Oh, it's a remix:

Carpenter: Not bad.

this is a list of comics to understand the basics of her character! ive seen a lot of people who didnt know where to start to read so ive compiled this list to make it as easy as possible for new readers to get into stephanie brown

who is stephanie brown?

daughter of the criminal and abusive father cluemaster (arthur brown), she became the spoiler to ‘spoil’ her father’s robbery and overall to protect herself and her mother from him. eventually she digs the vigilante life. she becomes robin briefly and is currently one of the batgirls!

as SPOILER:

⟢ secret origins: 80-page giant

this comic /technically/ is set in the future and is steph ‘telling the story of her childhood’ but honestly i find it pretty suitable even with no context and a must read in my eyes to understand her motives and character

⟢ detective comics 647 - 649

her first appearance… with the iconic brick in the face 😭 this comic is not set in a precise timeline, just post-robin 1991 and pre-knightfall so you can read it with no context as well!

⟢ showcase ‘95 #5 (second story)

PLEASE READ THIS i never see it in reading lists and its sooo important to me. it shows steph’s strained relationship with her mother when her dad is not in the picture and briefly some of her school life!

i’d say read robin (1993) afterwards because it consistently features steph, as much as it is ‘tim’s solo run’, but here THE most important stories (they were very hard to pick)

this story for me conveys properly the impact that steph’s upbringing had on her sense of justice and morality being fundamentally different from batman and robin’s, something tim and bruce just can’t understand

We Like, Are Totally Spies

When we think about shows that will appeal to boys. Action is the easiest to relate. Something like; Ben 10, American Dragon Jake Long, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Justice League will be on the list. It has drama, it has fights and it's cool!

However, there has been a movement in that era where specific cartoon shows aim to get girls into action. Kim Possible, Juniper Lee, My Life as a Teenage Robot, and The Winx Club are perfect examples of such shows.

There is an odd case for more girl-centric shows. Something about the need to balance femininity with action. The show needs to feel like an action that happens to have the main characters be girls. This is where today's topic comes in. We're talking about how;

- How's the Mission, Spies? -

< Totally Spies > by Vincent Chalvon-Demersay and David Michel follows three teens; Sam, Clover and Alex from Beverly Hills living a secret life being Super Spies for WOOHP (World Organization Of Human Protection) under their boss; Jerry Lewis.

Their missions involve travelling the world. Fighting mad scientists and twisted outcasts who seek to dominate the world with style and gadgets that conceal themselves as fashionable equipment.

The trio plays specific archetypes. Sam (green) is the brains, Clover (red) is the fashionista/ boy obsessive and Alex (yellow) is the athlete and occasional nerd. Despite their differences, they share several common interests such as their love for shopping and spy skills of agility, hand-to-hand combat and espionage.

Across six seasons, the girls matured from high school to university students. Confronting the daily struggles of homework, social lives and their petty arch-enemy, Mandy.

As a vibe, < Totally Spies > fully leans into the Beverly Hills lifestyle of fabulous fashion and some familiar pop culture names of that era. The show has a mix of the James Bond type of super spy world filled with dull henchmen, high-tech machines and some tacky villains.

- Time to go to Plan B! -

The episodes are condensed into their own episode. Although there have been some arcs that follow specific villains who have a bit of history with the main characters.

Tim Scam is a former agent who went rogue against WOOHP and Terrence Lewis; twin brother to Jerry and a sore thumb to WOOHP. There also reoccurring allies as well. Brittney (cyan) who joined the team as a trainee, Dean from the three-part series < Evil Promotion Much? > and Blaine a freelance agent who dated Clover.

The conflicts, if we can even call them conflicts at all have aged rather strangely. Some of the villains commit petty crimes like kidnapping celebrities due to jealousy or act extreme. Like being anti-consumerist with the solution of destroying malls.

Yet, some are still relatable to this day such as a kid villain who is mad at his father for being busy as a commentary on how parental neglect can cause warped ideas in a child. Whatever, it's a pre-teen show. Let's not look into it too deeply.

The world of Totally Spies is also interconnected with several other shows; [The Amazing Spiez] and [Martin Mystery].

< Martin Mystery > follows Martin, a paranormal investigator for the Center with Martin's step-sister, Diana Lombard and Java the Caveman. Fighting monsters, urban legends and aliens.

According to a special crossover episode. Martin's boss; M.O.M (Mystery Organization Manager) and Jerry know each other. Likewise, in Amazing Spiez; Jerry is also the boss of the Clark siblings. Lee, Marc, Megan and Tony. Sadly, these shows were short-lived and cancelled.

It does raise an interesting point. Why is Totally Spies more popular? As a guess, I think it's because the chemistry between the characters is a lot more interesting and fun.

The three girls are best of friends and while they sometimes bicker over boys, responsibilities and opinions. They will always put their friendship and mission first above all else. It feels more real, in a superficial way.

That an actual girl would have a girlfriend group this tight-knit and if they ever become a part of something bigger than them. They would do it together.

- Here We Go Again! -

Tacky villains, cute super spy girlfriends and awesome gadgets aside. The show has a few good jokes here and there. Its art style borrows a lot from Anime and its colors are groovy to the eyes.

For a show that was meant to attract girls into action. The show has also garnered a large following from boys as well. I think another secret to the success of < Totally Spies > can also be because of its approach to the subject. Like I said in my introduction.

There is an odd case for more girl-centric shows. Something about the need to balance femininity with action. The show needs to feel like an action that happens to have the main characters be girls.

This show is a girl's show. The girls are unapologetic being girly. Doing girl things like shopping, manicure, dating and going on dream vacations but with their secret life as spies. The show balances it out with good action and is still using that girly theme to add to its gadgets.

Heck, some of the gadgets are stuff that I would personally want to have. The Jet Pack backpack, The Wind Tunnel 3000 Tornado Blast Hair Dryer, Lazer lipstick and the Compowder are on my list. Especially with its costume change function.

It's a show that embraces both ends of the spectrum and allows it to show its respective strengths rather than shy away from the themes. With the announcement that this show is going to have a season 7/ soft reboot. It does look promising with several concerns.

But I am hopeful that for a beloved show such as this. The girls will have a proper return and inspire a new generation of girls (and boys) to be < Totally Spies >

Partida-Kipness for Texas 5th Court of Appeals, Place 2

The Dallas-based Texas Court of Appeals for the 5th District, known commonly as the 5th Court, is the busiest appellate-level court in the state.

Last year it disposed of 1,635 cases.

Compared with other state appellate courts, the 5th Court keeps its docket moving and doesn’t seem to be overly friendly to plaintiffs or defendants.

It does this while also granting oral arguments in more cases than its peer courts.

For those reasons, we see no reason to remove incumbent Democrat Robbie Partida-Kipness from the bench.

Originally from New Braunfels, Partida-Kipness, 53, has degrees from the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Texas at San Antonio and St. Mary’s University School of Law.

In 2018, she became the first Hispanic elected to the 5th.

This court has been criticized for its backlog.

As of Aug. 31, 2023 — the end of that fiscal year and the last year of available data — the court had 999 pending cases, including 118 that had been pending for more than a year.

Those numbers aren’t outliers — all Texas appellate courts have a backlog — but they could get better.

Republican candidate Jessica Lewis said the backlog tilts the scales of justice in favor of the rich.

“It favors those who have money to just outlast everything,” Lewis said.

“It makes courts less accessible.”

But while there’s room for improvement, the 5th Court is disposing cases about as quickly as its peers.

In 2023, the average time from filing to disposition was 8.4 months, according to state data.

For the 1st District Court of Appeals in Houston, it was 9 months.

For the 8th District Court of Appeals in El Paso, it was 10.1.

Nor is Partida-Kipness to be singled out.

Since taking the bench, she has authored more than 500 opinions, she said.

“I run a very tight ship in my chambers,” she said.

“It’s my name on it. I’m responsible for what’s in that opinion and how long it takes to get out.”

In addition to her work on the bench, Partida-Kipness said she’s particularly proud of her work in the community.

She serves on the Dean’s Advisory Council at the University of North Texas School of Law where she is often a guest speaker.

She called herself a “madrina,” or godmother, to the students there.

And she helped create an externship program for the Dallas Hispanic Bar Association.

“I’ve been able to influence and help perpetuate bringing in really good lawyers into the community,” she said.

Lewis, 43, has run for a judgeship twice before.

She has broad legal experience, including corporate, franchise, tax, environmental, real estate, construction and trust law.

These are two thoughtful and qualified candidates, but Partida-Kipness has experience in the role and the court is operating well with her contributions.

Voters should keep her on the bench.

Pruitt Arike Miller grew up under the primary care of Miranda Bailey and Ben Warren with the extended family of everyone at 19 after her father's untimely death when she had barely entered toddlerhood. When Pru grew old enough to understand her family dynamics, she held a bit of resentment toward her paternal grandparents for the trouble they had initially put Ben and Miranda through. This really grew when she learned how truly unsupportive they had been of her father. She has always remained kind and courteous with them, however, because she could tell they were trying to do better and suffered hard with the loss of Dean. She never really developed much of a relationship with her mother JJ, but she doesn’t mind too much. After all, she's surrounded by more parental figures than she knows what to do with and has two amazing brothers. She always adored visits from and to her maternal grandparents.

Pru grew up as a strong and fearless advocate for social justice, participating in and even organizing multiple protests and events ranging across many issues before she'd even graduated high school. She did well in school and had friends, but felt a little out of place among her peers that were only focused on things she considered juvenile. Upon graduating high school, she enrolled in the fire academy and joined the Seattle FD, of course being placed at Station 19 by her Auntie Andy. She also takes college classes online, racing toward a psychology degree with a lot of inspiration from both the wonderful things Auntie Hughie has been able to do with Crisis One and jobs like Diane Lewis helping other firefighters cope with how emotionally draining the job can be. Carrying on her father's legacy and being more than one of the masses has always been important to her. Making a difference rather than settling into complacency... that's a lesson she's pulled from almost everyone in her life.
