⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Spooky season continues to not disappoint! Immaculate vibes, one of my favorite maybe alive houses and a historically based haunting combined to make my expectations for this one sky high.

And let me tell you, if you’ve seen the hype and the posts and everyone fawning over this book and thought, “it can’t be that good.” Let me tell you it is. It’s a well balanced read that has a little something for everyone without feeling scattershot or un focused. It feels like a grown up modern twist on those novels with women in nightgowns running away from them that we loved. It doesn’t flinch away from darkness, but isn’t cynical or hopeless either. The highlight so far of my spooky season reading.

I've finished three books lately--2 short stories and a novel.

The first was The Brave Little Quakeress by E.P. Roe. We follow a young girl named Phebe, who is living in pre- Revolutionary War America. Her father is an outspoken patriot and has incurred the wrath of his Loyalist neighbors. They attempt to come after him several times, but each time, his young daughter bravely rescues him.

The next short story was Queen of Spades, also by E.P. Roe. This was a very sweet story about a young city slicker fella, who comes out to the farm to see his girl. When he arrives, he discovers they are in the midst of a work day, and he decides to jump in and help. In the process, he greatly impresses his father in law to be, and wins Sue's heart even more.

The novel was Crude, by Mike Bond. This is a thriller, about the threat of a nuclear war. There were a lot of main characters in this one. The first was Ross, the CEO of an oil company called Rawhide. He is faced with criminal charges when his oil rig suddenly blows up in the middle of the night. The press tries to claim that it was poor maintenance that caused it, but Ross is, and always has been, a stickler for regulations. Liz is the only survivor of the explosion. She has no idea what happened, either, claiming it was fine one second, and then the next, everything exploded.

The charges of poor maintenance are not Ross's only concern. Soon, his company's stock plummets, and he is facing bankruptcy. When one of his closest advisors is kidnapped, and then killed, he knows something else is going on, behind the scenes. He asks a friend, Turk, to investigate and see what turns up.

Meanwhile, the president threatens to launch the nuclear missiles. He claims Russia is already making threatening advances into Estonia and America needs to protect herself. Ross fears this will be the end of humanity as each side launches their missiles and ends billions of innocent lives.

Can Ross and Turk find out who caused the rig to blow? Who is trying to take down Rawhide? Most importantly, will the president launch the missiles or can Ross somehow prevent an all out nuclear war?

I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway. I am giving my opinion freely and am not being paid for it.

I liked this book a lot. I gave it 3.5 stars. It would have been 5, except for the objectionable elements. The objectionable things are not a main part of the story, still I cannot endorse this book for any Christian.

Mede door de gebruikte SMS-jes als schrijftaal. Ik vind Farida wel wat naïef overkomen. En het duurt lang voordat ze twijfels krijgt. De personages in het boek zijn goed beschreven. Sommige stelen je hart (Pierre) anderen zie je liever gaan dan komen (moeder). Er komen heftige thema's voor. Er kunnen voor sommige triggers zijn in dit boek. Thema's: psychiatrische problemen, vriendschap, liefde, dood, rouw, cultuurverschillen, vreemdgaan, vertrouwen, problemen in de psychiatrische zorg (in dit geval bij jongeren). Niet de beste jeugdthriller ooit, maar zeker een leuk boek. 3.5⭐ ............ Inhoud: Farida heeft het moeilijk nu haar vriendje en beste vriendin meer tijd met elkaar doorbrengen dan met haar. Maar dan ontmoet ze Tess, een meisje dat er net zo eenzaam uitziet als Farida zich voelt. Tess is pas echt ongelukkig: ze is zelfs opgenomen in een psychiatrische kliniek. I meant to post this last Friday, but in all the holiday busy-ness, I realized that I totally forgot. So Happy Monday! . It’s a story about a man with the paranormal ability to see after imprints of people. This ability makes him perfect for locating missing persons like the author he has been most recently asked to find. The journey to find her has unexpected twists, turns, and setbacks. . ⭐️⭐️⭐️ My Darling Dreadful Thing is a solid update to the gothic novel format. It has everything a discerning reader of the gothic genre could want, ghosts, family secrets, a spooky old house, and things that go bump in the night. However, if you read a lot of gothic novels, you’ll find some of the tropes at play here a little predictable. This reviewer had the whole situation pegged pretty much from the get go. That didn’t ruin my enjoyment of the book, but it did prevent it from reaching the heights of Mexican Gothic, or other gothic novels that managed to transcend their genre tropes rather than simply fulfilling them in a satisfactory manner.

That being said, the atmosphere, which, in this reviewer’s opinion, is the most crucial part of a gothic novel is the best part of this one. The decaying house where our characters spend most of their time is thoughtfully described and feels sufficiently ominous. Our book opens with Roos, an abused child, being forced to give seances for wealthy patrons by her demanding and overbearing mother. Unlike the other mediums, who have cheap tricks, Roos has a spirit guide named Ruth, who only she can see. Ruth, a decaying corpse with an unhinged jaw, is Roos’s only companion and comfort until Agnes, a wealthy widow, crosses the threshold. Agnes whisks Roos away from her cruel mother and into a world of old money. However, as Agnes and Roos deal with their growing attraction to each other and try to heal from trauma, this new world may not be any less dangerous than the one Roos left behind.

This book has a fantastic atmosphere and a good sense for character, but the plot felt derivative and I could see the pieces that had been stolen from other gothic novels. It’s an early work from this author and I hope she finds her own voice, because if she make a few improvements in the plot area, the potential is very high. A final note, this book is gorier than some historical gothics, there is a content warning at the front and it is not messing around.

This is an outstanding 3 story collection set in #California's #Salinas Valley in the #1930s. I just loved it. The story that stood out the most is the second one called The Snake. It's very mysterious and disturbing, and though not evident at first, the snake itself is a main character with the other two characters a young lab technician guy and an unknown tall woman who walks in the lab one evening unannounced. The first and also the titular story was about the aftermath of a mob attack. A man comes home shellshocked, unable to speak from the horror of the violence he had just witnessed, but all his wife is thinking is that he has been out shagging some other woman and so she is hysterical and she can't stop shouting and accusing him. The third story, The Chrysanthemum is about a very discreet and subtle betrayal, so subtle that I was not quite sure what happened (hence the four stars), but something not very pleasant happened. I’ve been reading them over the past year (as audiobooks) and I find myself laughing out loud at every single one of them. Book 4 brings Arthur Dent confused, but relieved, back home to Earth, having discovered that the past eight years didn’t really happen. Bewildered, he seeks answers, and ends up finding someone as confused as he is - Fenchurch. Fenchurch is a charming, shy, alluring woman who Dent instantly falls in love with - not only for her looks, but the fact that she knows a lot more than she’s letting on.
