i didnt think the 'andy + slavery' thing was handled as badly as everyone made it out to be when telling me about it. tho from the way it was talked about i had kind of figured the conflict between andy and nile re: slavery would be really racially charged (esp considering nile is a black american and would obvs have Thoughts on the subject in that regard) but like,, done in a cringey 'a-white-guy-obviously-wrote-it' kind of way? but it wasnt that. i mean. it makes sense that andy would be implicit in slavery through the years

i mean, like she says, is that not what people just did to each other in the aftermath of battles for thousands of years? and i really like how its pointed out that it was what she was raised with (in the beginning when you see her put shackles on that guy after the battle) but she also accepts responsibility for it and acknowledges that it was wrong and not just 'what people did'.

i like how from her expressions you can kind of tell baby andy knew it was off but she sets those feelings aside bc she felt angry. it explains how she felt but didnt make her out to be blameless in it. plus i mean. i dont know, the fact that andy was involved in a lot of morally shady stuff for 7000 years is not that wild for me. if you live that long youre just Going to be involved in some shit, and she didnt even have other immortals with her as positive community influences, she literally just did whatever the fuck she wanted for thousands of years

joe just found out his old friend who he thought was dead is alive (and also probably wants to murder them) and instead of investigating with andy he stopped to help nile up. champ.

on that note imo copley was. weirdly enough, more interesting in fm than in tog1. to me at least. the fact that andy let him live and he was so haunted by what had happened that he came back and sought them out despite knowing they would likely kill him for it bc he wanted to not only make up for what hed done but also to tell them what theyd done for the world was admittedly more interesting than andy just kind of drafting him to the cause and him going 'okie'

ive hit the picture limit but id seen that panel where nicky goes 'forgive me' as he kills a guy out of context and it was HILARIOUSLY anticlimactic for me to discover that there was literally no context to it. nicky just apologizes to random people he kills. i thought that guy was someone he knew or something. nope its just Some Guy that nicky didnt know from adam

nile's complaint that andy was especially brutal to the guys on the boat... i mean. . , how exactly does one kill a man with an axe and not be brutal about it?

it was funny how noriko kissed andy and the only people who seemed surprised by that were nile and also andy

nicky and joe's complete non-reaction to finding out noriko is alive And Evil Now is endlesly funny. they just left her on that boat and neither cared. i get book and nile not caring but joe and nicky knew her, and they just have 0 input on the subject of what to do with her

i dont know, i get why people didnt like the ending but its. .. . it makes more sense in the comicverse. bc the squad doesnt really. .. interact outside of jobs? i mean, think of the moon landing story in ttt. that was booker and joe and nicky doing a job and andy only showed up a for a couple minutes after it was done. or the brunch in the first issue of opening fire. the squad arent as tight in the comic, and andy often seems to do her own thing outside of work, so andy saying 'i dont want to do work anymore' and the squad being like 'alright bye then' makes more sense in this universe than the movie one

also i feel like greg was Trying to set up a thing where nile becomes the Leader of The Squad after andy dies but like. its not very well done since. . . i mean, nile hasnt spoken to booker since opening fire, (and she only knew him A Day). and shes known joe and nicky all that time, but there isnt really anything that indicates that they have any relationship at all, much less one that's grown. in all the comicverse the only time nile and nicky speak is in FM, and in that scene nicky tells nile about noriko. nile goes from someone who needs to be set aside to have background knowledge explained to her to being the Leader of the group with nothing in between. it kind of... comes out of nowhere.

on the other hand tho... i felt really bad for andy thru the whole thing. well, i always felt bad for andy, but in this one she seemed so miserable, especially since it really felt like none of the others actually.... cared about her. when noriko came back no one asked andy how she was doing (big question ik, but it wouldve showed they cared at least), nobody ever expressed any concern for her, no one even really seemed to want to be around her. in opening fire everyone was more distant than in the movie of course, but there were little moments where she would joke with joe, or nicky would try and comfort her, or stuff like that, but in FM it really felt like they just didnt really care about her. & in opening fire it felt a lot like andy's relationship with nile breathed some new life into her, but in FM it felt like all they did was argue. i get theyre not *as* close in the comics but it really felt like the only person who cared about andy at all was noriko (which was probably also how andy felt) but it just seemed to come out of nowhere. honestly i was reading and i was honestly agreeing with andy that she might just be better off if she did just die. opening fire, on the other hand, never make me feel that way

tho everyone made it sound like when the squad split up it was one of those cursed 'the found family leaves each other at the end of the journey' tropes. but guys i mean,,, this is the second installment out of three. that isnt the End. theyll come back in the third one and Dramatically Reunite to fight some baddies (probably those 'others' noriko mentioned). im guessing yitzhak fits into that too somehow.

anyways it wasnt That Bad but it made me kind of sad and the only Sweet Found Family vibes in it were when they saved booker. also they shouldve beefed up that nilemoose romance, it underwhelmed me. 6.5/10

i also ABSOLUTELY understand all of greg's comments about how you couldnt make FM directly into a movie, he always said that it had no plot and. i get it now. it really didnt have a plot sdfghjkl

have now read (almost) all of wyatt wingfoot’s actual comic appearances, can say with great confidence: a lot of them are pretty bad

only one was so bad i stopped reading after like, one issue (that was earth X, an alternate timeline) though to be fair i also have not even bothered to read the most recent issue of slott’s run because that’s also bad, but i know generally what happens and my verdict is: it sucks

anyway my personally most-enjoyed wyatt appearances in chronological order:

-OG meet-cute in 1966 aka Fantastic Four #50 thru #61 which includes their first meeting, and wyatt’s adventure with johnny in africa... this is also the first appearance of black panther i think. it’s definitely dated but surprisingly tame compared to the 70s-80s comics and there are some real good moments... wyatt is immediately ready to throw the fuck down for johnny and he is tall and handsome.

Prefacing this with: I’m white, but I wanna point out some shit before I actually continue the list.

Here i have to note that anything from 1970-2000 has a 50/50 chance of coloring wyatt real badly, even in the digital recolors, with only a few exceptions. The worst offender is in the early 90s in Sensational She-Hulk but that is NOT on my list because it’s bad. Most of the comics on this list, especially as we get into later and better-done comics, do not have red skin because there seems to be a correlation between bad art and bad story, but there are a few sprinkled in here with questionable pink-to-red coloring choices, particularly around the issue 200-somethings of Fantastic Four, and in general around the 70s and 80s.

I also wanna add here that around 1973, after stan lee had stopped writing fantastic four, after repeated statements to do with wyatt’s Comanche heritage (aka a real tribe in OK), gerry conway introduced “Keewazi,” a completely fake made-up tribe which then completely supplanted all but a few mentions of wyatt being Comanche (that being like, a brief comment implying his dead ancestors were comanche but that he is “keewazi”) with only one exception for an errant “Konohoti” (also made-up and in a bad comic that i won’t be recommending anyway) Said conway comic is not on my recommended list, either, but it has a notable line in which wyatt says he feels like he’s known johnny since before he ever met him, which i think about constantly...

Also, (and this is from me googling things to get better understandings of IRL stuff, as i read my way through f4 comics, so it’s by no means an expert’s words and i am still just a white person trying to get context) there are many mentions of Wyatt being on the reservation, of his family living on the reservation, teaching on the reservation, the tribe’s land being taken by oil companies, etc. but Oklahoma does not have reservations the way other states do and has not for decades. It also sounds like Wyatt becoming chief based only on being the previous chief’s grandson is pretty unlikely, but that’s a thing in the comics too.

There are a lot of inaccuracies and stereotypes in almost all of Wyatt’s appearances that are pretty blatant even to white-ass people like me, but some are better about this than others, for sure. So, keep that in mind even with the ones I list as enjoyable.

i’m just kinda doing a semi chrono order rather than “best to worst” order

-there’s SOME stuff from Fantastic Four #269 thru #280 that i liked but i really could not tell you specific issues and the way wyatt and jen meet is really not well done. i remember kinda liking the arc about central city being transported to the future, in which wyatt has a pretty brief appearance... but overall I just really don’t like John Byrne’s writing so ehh can’t really recommend but some of it’s like, fine

-Marvel Fanfare (1982) #37 [B Story] is pretty cute and brief. involves a double date between reed/sue and jen/wyatt with johnny as the fifth wheel, and also time travel. and arm wrestling. It’s not heavy on Wyatt but it’s cute in general.

-Marvel Graphic Novel #18 (the Sensational She-Hulk) is like............. i’m VERY torn on this. i think overall it has a lot of fun elements but as always with john byrne there’s plenty of bad mixed in, both in terms of sexualizing shulkie, byrne thinking he’s funnier than he actually is, and a bad scene w/ wyatt but it has some really cute moments too. it’s a real mixed bag, man. the infamous “she-hulk carries wyatt under her arm” scene is from this one... long and short is “shield captures she-hulk and wyatt, and they bust out.” Less racist than wyatt’s appearances in the following sensational she-hulk run john byrne did after this, which is NOT SAYING A LOT because wyatt’s appearances in that comic run were pretty fucking offensive. if you like jenwyatt i guess read this, like, it’s fine, but... eh...

-She-Hulk: Ceremony (only 2 jumbo issues long) is another one I’m veeeerrryyyy torn on but RIGHT off the bat i will say it is worth more than the weight of all john byrne’s wyatt scenes combined. The pacing is kind of really weird, it’s got a lot of odd mystical native stereotypes in it... but it’s got really nice art though and mcduffie gives wyatt i think some of the most depth/nuance of any of these comics... he and jen are both equally important and treated as complex characters from the very first page to the very last... it’s one of those comics where i can’t say, “read it despite its flaws” because I just... don’t know. and it’s a comic which has had almost no impact on the works that followed, but at the same time it does have some really nice stuff for both jen and wyatt’s characters. this is the one where wyatt and jen almost get married and wyatt almost goes to law school. anyway I personally really liked it despite its flaws and it seems more researched than some other things but it’s definitely still lacking in some of its approach to indigenous stuff. dwayne mcduffie being black i think does give it a little something that it would otherwise lack, if it had been written by a white dude like all the other things.

-Marvel Graphic Novel #62 (Ka-zar: Guns of the Savage Land) based on the synopsis I read, I expected this to be bad but it was actually alright? I liked the art, wyatt’s handsome... BUT there’s a lot of weird condescending paternalism to it, wrt the indigenous groups and how they’re depicted, and i think that’s a pretty big, glaring flaw along with some of the usual caveats that come with anything relating to the savage land (including, you know, the name itself), but the rest of it is not half bad. ka-zar’s a jackass though. it’s one of the MANY stories wyatt appears in which feature an oil company as the bad guys (Roxxon in this case) but it’s one of the only ones that’s actually halfway decent.

-Marvel Super-Heroes vol 2 #5 (Treasure) short and sweet, features a sea monster, jen and wyatt on a little getaway together, and wyatt wearing heart-patterned swim trunks. almost forgot this one cause it’s easy to miss, but it’s really cute.

-Fantastic Four #394 was okay if i recall. this is when wyatt, johnny, jen, and some others go out to an archaeology dig and lyja stalks johnny. johnny telling wyatt he ought to bottle his charm and sell it... is good. everything with lyja... less good. jen, wyatt and johnny palling around... great. everything with lyja.... not great. a real mixed bag for me.

-Strange Tales vol 3 #1 i did not hate. if i remember correctly it has the same artist as guns of the savage land. it’s about the power of storytelling. i enjoyed this in particular because it shows wyatt’s grandfather as like... a human with interests beyond just being a Wise Old Man--he reads monster magazines! i liked that a lot. it’s still kinda... iffy in spots, especially with doctor strange involved, but it was still fun and i like when wyatt and his family get treated like human beings.

-Fantastic Force was actually pretty fun, I think. Wyatt is only in issues #12-16 so that’s all I bothered to read but it has this very amusing moment of wyatt saying how it’s unfortunate his and jen’s relationship wasn’t meant to work out but he treasures her friendship... while holding her hand after a date. starting on issue 12 there was some context missing but i didn’t really... care.... my reading style is plowing through random issues without ever reading the context and then going: idk what’s going on

-Fantastic Four vol 2 Listen. I know this comic is not “good” but I liked it and that’s what matters here. This is Franklin’s pocket dimension of the heroes reborn alternate universe... it’s definitely flawed, and i think it tries to cram a lot in for the sake of including classic characters, but i honestly really enjoyed it a lot and wyatt is not insignificant, though he’s not like, majorly important either. reading order gets a little fucking weird around issue 12 at which point you gotta also read issue 12 of the heroes reborn versions of avengers, iron man, and captain america. there are reading guides though, thank god. it’s fun, it’s a different take on the four that nonetheless has lots of small nods to the classic comics... a lot of people think it’s bad and like. i get why. but i think it was enjoyable and engaging minus the parts where i was forced to read avengers comics. wyatt’s actually only in issues 4-6 but i wound up starting from the beginning and reading the whole thing except the final issue cause that continued some new plot i didn’t care about from some other comic--it really breaks up in the end there lmao.... Relatedly, i don’t think heroes reborn: ashema is much worth the read; it’s like, fine, but wyatt’s five second appearance is kind of random and features tomazooma which means i immediately dislike it. like CONCEPTUALLY, wyatt piloting a mech is great. but... not that mech.

-Fantastic Four: The End. this comic... is... weird? it’s fine? i don’t know, i don’t think i’d go out of my way to recommend it but at the same time i didn’t hate it? so i’ll include it here. it’s an alternate future featuring some wild robo doom as the villain. wyatt runs an asteroid mining company for some reason. peter has a goatee. ben has like three kids with alicia. johnny rides the silver surfer’s board. it was... definitely interesting. and one of the comics in which sue has short hair, which is always a bonus for me.

-She-Hulks: (yes, with the plural) It’s a mini. I REALLY liked this. wyatt’s in like, two issues but I genuinely recommend the whole thing (it’s only 4 issues total) I really liked this comic, I thought it was a lot of fun and wyatt and jen’s interactions were really sweet. My biggest crits are that the author falls into the same “failing to write teenage girls” pitfalls as many, many marvel writers, and that stegman draws wyatt literally an entire foot too short. but i prefer this old stegman art vastly to his grungy current art. INTERESTING NOTE HERE is that wyatt’s appearances in this comic were published riiight around the same time johnny straight-up died in hickman’s fantastic four run, which is honestly fascinating to contemplate and also extra heartbreaking that i never got to see how wyatt found out considering he was almost definitely in the city when it happened. anyway. good, bittersweet as all hell on the she-hulk front, really enjoyable for me. i did not bother to read any of the hulk comics preceding it for context and i don’t think you need to, to understand it.

-Captain America Corps --This comic is.... something. wyatt is only in the last two issues in a minor role but the whole series is again only 5 issues and I honestly really enjoyed it? Though I think it tripped over itself in a few places. It involves time travel, captain america, an alternate 21st century which would be heavy-handed if it weren’t for trump. I think it gets its message a little tangled up in parts, especially near the end with the femazon whatever bullshit (so close to talking about white women’s privileges), but overall it was a fun little AU mini-series, with some flaws. it also implies that wyatt goes on to become the president which is the funniest thing i’ve ever read. he would hate that so much, man

-FF vol 2. not fantastic four. FF. just the initials. WITH A CAVEAT. Okay. Wyatt is in issues #3-4, 8, and 16. This one is a tough one, though. This series. I like the art mostly. I like Wyatt’s scenes (tho i will pick a bone with mr fraction about wyatt’s supposed inability to pronounce french or know what to order at a french restaurant when he is multilingual and has gone to several french restaurants before) ANYWAY. Wyatt is really great in these appearances I think, charming, handsome, etc. The issues focusing on the kids, on interpersonal relationships, etc... i really like. But the rest. I do not like at all. The entire doom plot, I hated. Issue 16? Skip to the barbecue on the moon. I mean it. The bulk of issue 16 is a vastly uncomfortable, drawn-out fight scene between ant-man and doctor doom that just made me feel gross to read and just happens to be one of the only comics Victor has ever spoken Romani. So that’s... not great. The plot as a whole--I did not like it, especially not the stuff written by Allred, and I cannot recommend it unless you fucking hate doctor doom and want to watch him get beaten up for like literally 10 pages. That being said... again, the stuff with the kids? with bentley, and the moloids, and tong coming out, and the stuff with she-hulk and wyatt? I really really liked, and I thought was really sweet and fun. Oh also Wyatt looking at old man johnny and just knowing it’s him? chef kiss. So. definitely just. skip around. It’s a REAL mixed bag but there is some good stuff in there amidst the like...burnt peanuts.

-She-Hulk volume 3: wyatt is only in #5-6 and #12, really, with brief shots of his photo in some earlier issues BUT. I read the whole thing. It’s 12 issues total, and I really enjoyed it. The plot you think gets dropped does not get dropped, wyatt punches some demons in the face in the background, patsy is there... I really liked it. The art is a bit all over the place, and is not for everyone--it features Javier Pulido’s work for the majority, and I honestly... really like his work for its style and expressiveness but it REALLY is not for everyone, visually. Obviously Kevin Wada’s covers are gorgeous. The other artist who I forget the name of draws wyatt like... nigh unrecognizably, it’s really weird, and I don’t like his work as much but he does have some good spreads here and there. Colors are fantastic throughout. Again, really liked it. A little iffy on the secretary with the monkey.

-Fantastic Four vol 5 #11-12. These are the issues in which Wyatt gets shot by “hawkeye” and he and spidey hold an intervention for Johnny. I actually started with issue... 9 I think to just read the whole story, and I did enjoy that, though I will pick a fight over the idea that wyatt is a womanizer and would just toy with sharon who prior to this there was never any evidence they were romantically involved ANYWAY. I liked it. I felt feelings about Wyatt and Johnny, as well as the rest of the family. It switches to legacy numbering at one point and goes into:

-Fantastic Four #643-645 which is the rest of the story. I THINK 9-12 + 642-645 is everything.... Either way, I liked it a lot despite the fact that I’m really not a fan of Jesus Aburtov’s color work. Features the Heroes Reborn versions of the Avengers but like, empty, which was a fun nod.

-Hulk vol 4 #11 okay. wyatt’s not actually in this aside from jen reminiscing about her love life and showing like, two flashback panels of him. but. i really liked it a lot and i read the whole run based on the One (1) issue containing those panels. mariko tamaki has a great sense of humor and i found her fourth wall breaking to be actually funny sometimes instead of, like byrne’s, nigh intolerable. she also does some really solid character work for jen (which was later, of course, mangled by the avengers writers 🙄) the following she hulk series is a little less solid but i can imagine it was rushed because of the avengers comic, so, really, i’ll just blame everything on the avengers.

don’t read dan slott’s f4. i’ve read bad comics. i’ve read bad f4 comics. i’ve read bad wyatts. his run pings all of these. how do you write wyatt wingfoot out of character?! ask dan slott. oh, except #5′s bachelor party issue which I do think is fun and has wyatt in the background in a snazzy red tuxedo. #5 is actually my favorite issue of the whole run, which, to be fair, is not saying much. the first like, 2 issues and then issue 5 are really the most solid in there, and it just goes downhill from there.

natalie was supposed to be a twin , but the other baby ( a boy named pierre ) didn’t survive . they didn’t think that natalie would , but she did ! unfortunately , her parents were too wounded by the loss of their other baby and it was all grieving and no celebrating .

also . there’s more info abt her parents n how they met in the bio but , a sparknotes version is that michel was a playwright in paris and colette was a ballerina / his muse and they rushed into a marriage

michel made it rly big a couple yrs after natalie was born and so they decided to use that $ $ $ to send natalie away to an expensive boarding school in london called our lady of sacred suffering . it was , of course , a catholic girls boarding school and natalie hated it there

but they hated natalie there bc she was just the WORST catholic school girl of all time , so it was mutual

meanwhile , her relationship w her parents is . . very complicated . her dad is just kind of The Worst across the board , very reliant on drinking , definitely got into drug use at some point , had lots of affairs with the young actresses in his plays . and colette was just . . very sad and very absent so the support was Minimal

natalie has a lot of issues that are all rooted in her childhood tbh .

somewhere along the way , she found a deep passion for Writing and developed this sense of purpose and for a minute things were going very well

which we all know means things are about to get WORSE .

on her eighteenth birthday , natalie receieves a card in the mail from her mother for the First Time Ever . and she immediately is like . huh . well . something is Wrong .

she’s right .

they promise to keep natalie out of it as much as possible but when it comes time to testify as to whether or not michel had a history of not caring about colette’s life and well - being , the only one who can speak to it is natalie .

so she testifies and it’s her testimony that is the metaphorical nail in the coffin .

michel knows it , too . that’s what natalie thinks . he turns up dead in his jail cell the day before he’s supposed to be sentenced . she never knows if he deserved the life sentence he was going to be given .

AWW WTF TOKYO MIRAGE SESSIONS MADE ME FEEL ACTUAL FEELINGS

Its kinds stupid how every single girl has a contrived 'go on a fake date' scene with protag, and all the dialogue choices are pointless cos even if you fuck up and act like an asshole forever all these girls will still wanna jump your dick just cos youre the protag. And also it sucks that like HALF OF THE PARTY only joins super close to the end of the main story, and you wont really get to know them very well unless you go nah to the apocolypse and waste 10 hours doing sidequests. And it also sucks that you have to unlock these sidequests via battling. Like it could have been cool that using people in your party raises their friendship stat, but in practise it just means grinding for hours after youve finished all the actual story content. Like sidequests are supposed to be generally a good way to grind up in between story!

ALSO theoretically the date with Eleonora SHOULD be just as bad as the rest. Like it sounds super shitty that she has to 'learn how to be a normal girl in love' in order to progress her career in showbiz, and apparantly she's never been interested in boys before protag shows her ~the real way~ Like man invoking unfortunate implications of LGBT conversion therapy isnt a good way to start a romance! And its rather repetitive when EVERYONE ELSE also has to go on fake dates with him, and Kiria also has the same 'i need to learn how to be Real Girl from your magical healing dick'. But its even more frustrating with her cos it actually literally is You Are Not Girl.Enough, and it came out of NOWHERE because she wasnt remotely tomboyish?? Like she's just..tough?? Tomboy = being stoic while also wearing super revealimg supermodel high heels and lingerie in battle, apparantly. And its so patronizing cos she's all uwuuuu protagoniiiist i need to be giiiirl~ Like super cutesy moe moe stereotype all of a sudden and of course it was her Real Personality and she was just keepinh it hidden because of all that societal pressure to be gender non conforming, of course! Help her embrace her true stereotypicality and cast away those absolutely minimal traits of non conformism! And then a creepily sexualized scene of her wearing a hello kitty mascot suit in a kids show. And speaking of which its so creepy they sexualize the actual kid too!! Theres a fucking ELEVEN YEAR OLD idol! And her manager 'uncle barry' keeps acting like a creepy pervy stalker fan and she's always all 'i love uncle barry he cares about me so much' and theres like multiple sidequests all about how uncle barry is great and she needs to appreciate him more. But serioisly are we just forgetting he was creeping over a keychain of her?? Like he was introduced so much before we ever saw her and from the pervy way he acted i thought she was meant to be some full grown woman in a gravure show rather than a goddamn 11 year old doing a microwave snacks cooking show with a muppet called microwave chan. And gahh when i saw her design i thought she was 15 at least! And everyone else looks in their 20s but apparantly theyre all underage too and the one who looks like an actual teenager is ELEVEN! they just casually drop in her profile that she's ELEVEN! a guy is perving on an eleven year old and we're meant to appreciate him more as a wholesome uncle???

...man..okay.. Anyway..

The game has a lot of creepy pervy moments BUT one bit in Eleonora's final date did make me feel a minor bit of genuine chemistry there. Or well, just a good romance dialogue from herand still zero personality or likeability from the actual protagonist. Alas!

Ok so it actually kinda sounds just as bad, tho. Out of context the idea of 'here's a quiz about everything we did in the previous dates' sounds kinda abusive. But in context its somehow adorable and wholesome?? Cos Ellie is the tsundere type, but she's one of the least assholish tsunderes ever. If the game wasnt constantly being all 'SHES SO RUDE AND UNGIRLY' and 'BLABLABLA RACISM' at her, i'd even say she's the most naturally written and likeable character! So in the context here its less "i will punish you for not being constantly the perfect boyfriend" and more "i genuinely cant believe you actually like me and im trying to run thru all the evidence in rapid fire while i have a conniption right here". Like man i wish protag had more personality cos its so annoying that he's super oblivious to her going into massive blush mode as she realizes he's ~so considerate and genuinely treasured all those dates~. Except he isnt, he's bland as fuck and gave no indication that he returned her feelings before now, or gave a shit about any of the stuff he apparantly remembered. And he only remembers because you the player did. And you can forget it all and get every question wrong and NOTHING CHANGES! i feel so sorry for her cos even if protag is a big douche she still decides he really does love her and it ends exactly the same.. GAHHHHH

So man even tho it was badly executed, i do still like the idea of a "w-wh-whaa, how can you love me?! Prove it with a 5 page thesis!" type moment with an adorkable grump! Summary: Josh falls. Josh falls fast and Josh falls hard. But what happens when he loves something he can’t keep?

Just a super fluffy love story in which, Josh meets and quickly falls completely in love with you. You are pregnant (surrogate) and he gets attached to the pregnancy.

“I love hearing you whimper.” He’s whispering now, his hot breath across your skin causing you to tremble. “I love hearing your gasps and sighs when you let me explore your body.”

Chapter 11

“Heyyy, you guys are finally here!” Tyler shouts over the music that’s playing loudly inside the house. Maddy, with Jenna’s help, had planned for there to be an ‘engagement celebration get-together’ at her house as soon as you guys landed back in Ohio. Guests weren’t due to start arriving yet, but by the looks of it, the house was nearly in full-on party mode already. Food and drinks were out, music was on, champagne was on ice, as well as sparkling grape juice for you and Maddy.

“Good to see you, buddy. And congratulations, man,” Tyler says, pulling Josh thru the doorway and into a bear hug. “I’m proud of you, man. My bro is finally getting married,” he adds, playfully punching Josh in the shoulder.

“And come ‘mere, you,” he says, his tone softer with you. He pulls you into as much of a tight hug as he can. “We finally get to officially add you to the family.”

“Looks that way. Thanks, Ty,” you say, squeezing him back. When he pulls away, you stand on your tiptoes to kiss Josh on the cheek, “I’m gonna go say hi to the girls,” you tell him, your hand finding his and interlacing for just a second, squeezing before you walk further into the house.

“So, give me the deets. How was it done?”

Josh raises his hand, taking a deep breath to start to say something, but is quickly cut off by loud, high-pitched squealing coming from the living room. Both men look over and grin, knowing full well what’s going on in the other room as you stand there with your new ring on display.

“That, my friend, is probably a story best saved for later.”

An hour later and the house is hopping. The Josephs are all there, the Duns are all there, and laughter can be heard all around. It’s a full house if you’ve ever seen one, and you cannot wait to become part of this extended family.

You look around at your soon-to-be family, a peaceful feeling settling in your stomach as your eyes come to rest on Josh. He looks so happy, cheerful smile on his face that reaches up to his eyes, causing them to nearly disappear. He has one hand on his brother’s shoulder and his other hand resting on his stomach as he throws his head back in laughter, his tongue just barely poking through his teeth. You can’t believe just how lucky you are. How did you, of all people, become lucky enough to be the one that Josh fell in love with?

“Okay, okay everyone,” Maddy says, pointing a tiny remote at the stereo to turn the music down a bit. Will and Tyler are bringing in two wooden, white chairs that they set in the middle of the room, one for you, one for Josh, “Let’s have the newly engaged couple come have a seat here in the middle...” she trails off, smiling brightly and waving her hand at you to come over. Everyone else has taken their chairs and made sort of a semi-circle around your chairs. Once you’re seated, Jenna passes her a simple, white box with a purple, silk bow wrapped around it, which she passes to you.

“Now, before you open that,” she says, pointing to the box, “I think we all would like to know just exactly how it happened. Tell us the engagement story.”

“Oh yes, please! You know I’m a sucker for a good engagement story,” Laura adds.

You recount what happened, how he asked, and how it was a surprise that he was even at your house that night in the first place. Josh stops you to fill in little tidbits every now and then about how nervous he was, how he couldn’t stop talking about you to the poor person sitting next to him on the plane, even pulling the ring out to show it to them, and then how he almost dropped the ring trying to pull it out of his pocket before he dropped to his knee… none of which you noticed at the time. He blushes red a few times, especially when you tell them that he sang to you. Many ‘oh how sweet’ and ‘awe’s can be heard around the semicircle.

“And it was all spur of the moment, I swear. Funny story,” he says, turning to you, “I had actually planned to ask you on the bridge that night we went out to Scioto Mile before you flew back home. Had the ring in my pocket, ready to drop to my knee and everything.”

“Oh my gosh!” Jenna shouts suddenly, turning to Tyler. “Is that how come you knew about all of this before we did?” she finishes, gesturing between her and Maddy. Tyler just grins sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck. “Tyler Robert Joseph!” she exclaims playfully. “You and I are gonna have to have a talk later.”

“Yes, dear,” he says, pretending to be defeated. He catches Josh’s eye and winks.

“Okay,” Maddy says, clapping her hands together once, “so as an early ‘welcome to the family’ gift, we’d like you to have this,” she says, pointing once again to the box. “Go ahead and open it.”

You pull one of the bow tails, then pull apart the knot, removing the pretty bow from the package. Josh, being silly, takes the ribbon from your lap and wraps it around his neck like a scarf. He just turns to you and smiles cheesily as you continue to open the gift. It makes your stomach flutter.

When you lift off the white lid, you see a large, solid rectangle wrapped in lavender and white tissue paper. You pull the gift out of the box, noticing how heavy it seems to be, and carefully remove the paper from around it.

When you finally have it all unwrapped, you run your fingers over the top of it, smiling affectionately before turning it around to show everyone. Several more ‘awe’s can be heard throughout the group once again. It is a large, incredibly thick, spiral planner. The cover is a thick, pink and white striped, glossy cardboard, and written across the front in gold glitter lettering, it reads ‘Miss to Mrs.’. Along the very bottom of the cover, it’s been personalized, debossed in dark gray to read, ‘The Future Mrs. Dun’.

“It’s sort of a tradition with us girls,” Maddy informs, cutting into your thoughts.

“Yeah, I gave one to Maddy when she was getting married...” Jenna adds, “And now I’m giving one to you,” Maddy finishes.

“Oh my gosh, you guys, I don’t even…” you trail off mid-sentence and stand, walking over to Maddy to give her a hug, or rather, what you can of a hug. Both of your growing bellies are preventing you from getting too close to each other, having to settle for smooshed bellies and shoulder pats, as that’s simply all you could reach with your bellies in the way.

“Thank you, guys,” you say, leaning over to hug Jenna as well. “I don’t even know what to say. Just, thank you.” “Don’t mention it. We’re thrilled to have you,” Jenna replies.

Maddy nods in agreement. “Welcome to the family.”

“Man, this thing has everything,” you say, sitting in your pajamas, cross legged on the bed, and flipping through your new wedding planner. “Even some stuff I never even thought of.”

“Well, don’t worry. With those two at your side, they won’t let a single detail go unplanned, I promise,” he says, walking up to his side of the bed, tossing away his shirt, and toeing off his shoes.

You flip back to the beginning of the book, glancing over the first page. “At least they start you off with easy ones to fill in, like ‘Wedding Date’.” You hum in thought. “What do you think, Josh? When do you want to have the wedding?”

He climbs on the bed, bouncing on his knees over to you before kneeling next to you, wrapping his arms around your waist and placing his chin on your shoulder.

“Hmm,” he hums, leaning in to kiss your cheek, “tomorrow.”

“Jooosh,” you whine, giggling and shying away from his kisses, but still trapped within the confines of his strong arms. “I’m serious.”

“Me too,” he says, letting you go to instead sit next to you, kicking his feet out in front of him, and pulling the planner so that you each have one half on your laps. “But seriously, whatever day makes you my wife, I am fine with. As long as I end up married to you by the end of the day, I won’t mind.” He turns to you and smiles genuinely.

God, you are so in love with this man. You find yourself, for the second time that night, asking how in the world you happened to get so lucky. Unfortunately, that train of thought gives birth to doubt.

“You sure you wanna marry me, Josh?” you ask timidly, looking down at the thick book in your laps. “I mean, I already have a bunch of stretch marks, and I’m only gonna get bigger,” you admit, bringing your hand up to absentmindedly rub at your belly. “Soon I’ll be feeling like Violet from Willy Wonka, especially by the time we get to the end of this thing. I already feel like an upside-down turtle when I try to sit up from laying down, or even going from sitting to standing.”

He pulls the book toward him until it’s completely in his lap before shutting it and setting it off to the side. He then turns to face you so that you are both sitting cross legged, facing each other.

“And even after I have her, my belly is gonna be all saggy and gross after,” you say, making a disgusted face. Josh starts to say something, but you quickly continue, not allowing him to speak.

“And if you think dealing with a period for a week is bad, try six weeks of bleeding. After I have her I’ll be bleeding for up to six weeks, my hormones will be all over the place, I’ll be all hot-flashy and I’ll sweat like a pig when I sleep cause I won’t be able to regulate my body temperature due to the hormones being all out of whack.” You take a deep breath and sigh heavily, feeling defeated.

“And I’ll be there to take care of you,” Josh says softly, reaching across to take your hands in his. “I’ll be with you every at every step to help you through it. I want to. I actually can’t wait for when I get to do that... take care of you,” he mutters, reassuringly.

“But it doesn’t stop there, Josh. It gets worse.” You look up at him with a pitiful look of defeat, eyebrows knitted together in concern and eyes full of anguish. “My boobs are going to be all leaky all the time, then once I’m done pumping breast milk, they’ll probably be all saggy for a while. Definitely not the Hollywood perky you could have with anyone else. I’m gonna look like a lumpy, deflated balloon, and look at you,” you wave your hand up and down, gesturing to his body, “you’re so attractive and tight and fit. You could have anyone, Josh, any actress or model with a rocking body if you were to only spare a grin in their general direction.”

You take another deep, shaky breath, eyes starting to sting with unwanted emotion, and drop your gaze back down to your lap, head hung in shame.

“I don’t want you to be stuck with my soggy, saggy, post-baby body. And I know I can work out and get back into shape once my body heals, but in the meantime,” you stop, motioning down to your own, very pregnant body, “this is only gonna get worse before it gets better.”

He pulls one hand away to place on your jaw, forcing you to look up at his face before speaking very softly and carefully to you.

“You are literally gifting someone with life ... a life, Kat. I think it’s easy for you to forget how extraordinary that truly is. You are bringing a brand-new soul, a new human into this world, and not even for yourself. You are creating a child, a family, completely for someone else’s benefit. The amount of selflessness…” he cuts off, huffing out a breath before continuing.

“As beautiful as you are to me now, you will always be even that much more beautiful for that, regardless of what it does to your body.” He drops his hand, but you keep your head up, gaze on him. “I mean, I’m gonna be old and saggy and wrinkly, and, let’s be honest here, probably bald one day,” he says, grinning, and running his fingers through his bright yellow hair. You chuckle softly as he continues, “Are you going to love me any less for any of those things? Or be any less attracted to me because of it?”

“No. No, of course not.”

“See?”

“I just… I don't wanna hold you back somehow, Josh. I don’t want you to be stuck with a “normie” like me. There are so many other, better…”

“Stop talking,” he says forcefully. “You stop talking like that RIGHT now,” he bites, a sharp, angry edge to his voice. You recoil a bit, just due to the sheer emotion in his words. You’ve not seen him get upset before, but one thing’s for sure, you don’t like it.

“I chose you. I chose you because I love you. YOU, Kat. I love you. I love your laugh. I love your eyes and how they light up when you see me. I love your personality, and how selfless you are. I love how kind, and giving, and generous you are.”

He drops his voice, low and soft, taking your hands back in his and leaning forward a bit. “I love the way you look at me like I’m your favorite person in the whole wide world. I love how when you kiss me, you have to stand up on your toes to reach me. I love how your hands feel in mine,” he says, giving them a slight squeeze.

He drops his voice even lower before continuing. “I love doing things that make you smile that beautiful smile that I can’t seem to get enough of, and would do anything to see,” he says, tracing his thumb across your bottom lip.

He moves to sit behind you, encasing his legs on either side of yours and wrapping his arms around your middle, sighing before he continues. “I love your warmth.” He squeezes your middle in a tight hug, hooking his chin over your shoulder before he continues. “I love feeling you against me at night when we sleep. I love your voice. I love hearing you say that you love me.”

Arms still locked around your waist, he turns his head and kisses you just behind your ear, causing your skin to erupt in goosebumps. You shiver, tilting your head slightly as he trails a few more kisses down your neck to your shoulder.

“I love hearing you whimper.” He’s whispering now, his hot breath across your skin causing you to tremble. “I love hearing your gasps and sighs when you let me explore your body.”

He releases his hold on your waist, moving his hands up to cup your breasts, thumbs grazing back and forth over your nipples. You gasp, throwing your head back onto his shoulder as your breathing starts to pick up.

“That’s it, baby girl. Let me take care of you,” he sighs. You groan, arching your back and pushing your chest out as he pinches your nipples slightly before continuing. “Let me show you how beautiful you are to me.”

He turns his head and continues to kiss up and down your neck, his hands still massaging your breasts all the while. His breath starts to come out in huffs, and his kisses start to get sloppier and more wet as he begins to nibble every so often as well.

Dropping his hands to the hem of your shirt, he begins to work it up, higher and higher until you raise your arms, allowing him to pull it off you. He hums as he reaches back around, his bare chest now pressed against your bare back, hands finding their way back to your breasts.

Choosing and Applying to a Volunteering Organization

Right after Christmas, I started researching different volunteer organizations. At first I was shocked they expected people to paid to volunteer. I was like what?! I gotta pay to work for free?! Then I read on and realized it was for airport pick up, housing, and two meals a day. Basically you are pay for your stay and meals but they set it all up for you. Great! Less work for me.

My online search lead me to goabroad.com . It is like the “kayak.com” of volunteering organizations and causes. I found 2 sites that had programs, in Mérida, Mexico, that seemed to be exactly what I was looking for. Ubelong (founded in 09) and International Volunteer HQ (founded in 07)

Project Options

While trying to decide which volunteer organization to go with, I first needed to see if the two I was considering were both stationed in Merida, Mexico. I was happily surprised to see they both were! I knew I wanted to go to Mexico, but if your going in blind, I would say pick a few destinations that you would love to visit and then see if any of their projects speak to you.

Ubelong Destinations: Mexico, India, Laos, Morocco, Vietnam, Ghana, Peru, Costa Rica, and Cambodia

IVHQ Destinations: Peru, Brazil, Uganda, Bali,, Mexico, Argentina, China, Philippines, Nepal, Hawaii, Romania, Morocco Spain, Fiji, Kenya, South Africa, Vietnam, the list goes on…

They all mostly stay in the same price range, with a few exceptions. Some of the more pricey destinations include Hawaii, Italy, and Bali.

Keep under consideration when choosing a destination what time of year you are planning on traveling. The weather conditions could be brutal if not planned properly. Merida in the month of March is suppose to be late 70s early 80s. If I had planned to go in May….. I would have melting like the witch of the wicked witch of the west.

At first glance of what was available in Mexico, I was immediately drawn to child care and teaching English. I do love animals so I thought about animal care, unfortunately flash backs of working at a vet office ruled that out for me. I’m too soft when it comes to animals, it would be too distressing for me. I have a stronger stomach for human suffering. Hahaha haha.. ha… ha..… *awkward* Any who! As I read about teaching English I found out it was required you speak intermediate Spanish… OK THEN! Child Care it is!

Cost Comparison

IVHQ $279 registration they offer 1 to 8 weeks is $270 - $1,100 program fee

Ubelong $200 registration, they offer 1 to 28 weeks $310 - $2,815 program fee

Other factors of price to consider are plane tickets, visas, exchange rates, and local cost of living. Most of the places volunteering is needed are obviously going to be less economically wealthy countries. Which is unfortunate but makes it quite affordable for volunteers coming from the US and Europe for example.

They ask, before you apply, to have an idea of where and when you would like to go, as well as which project you would like to participate in. The application form is just your basic information, what languages you speak, education/employment history, and a few questions to express your character.

The Big Decision

Everything was pretty well explained on the sites, but I was having a hard time choosing between organizations. To help decide I applied to both. I received an acceptance email with: directions of how to send the registration and program fees. You can send money thru Paypal, snail mail, or, bank transfer. Even tho there is a 6% charge, I payed with Paypal. This email also included a volunteer code of conduct and liability waiver forms to digitally sign. It also reminds you, that you must have travel medical insurance, including emergency evacuation services.

OK great, more info but still nothing to help me pick. Maybe speaking to a live person about the programs would help. So I called Ubelong headquarters located in Washington D.C., United States and IVHQ located in New Zealand. I didn’t have many questions, just one in for IVHQ. I wanted to know where their dorm was located, as it was not listed on their website. I waited a couple days for a call back from both of them. First IVHQ called, the woman on the phone, she seemed a bit busy but I was happy she took time to call me back. She told me she could not give out that location of the volunteer housing until I signed up. Really? You want me to give you my money before you tell me where I’m staying??? Then I asked her to give me a general idea by land mark. She told me she wasn’t sure and ask me to give her a moment to look. She said the volunteer housing was located downtown, north of the center of the city. Now I can appreciate their discretion as safety measure for the volunteers. I totally get it but I’m new to this and I want to know the location and living conditions before I commit. Ring Ring! Ubelong called the day after IVHQ. The woman on the phone was so sweet and fun to talk to, as well as very informed, and helpful. The Ubelong site displays the hostel you will be housed. I could easily search the web to check out the location, see rooms and common areas. May I add Nómadas Hostel looks dope!!! They have wonderful reviews and a badass pool to boot! Check in later posts for my review of the Nomadas Hostel.

In the end they are both similar to the untrained eye. Therefore I made my decision based on intuition rather than logic. Ubeong you have been chosen!

Lets get this lock in and confirmed! I sent my money and info in. A few days later I received a confirmation email. This included:

A link to Volunteer Information Form (super important to fill out)

Digital Ubelong Introduction Booklet with tons of info

Safety video

Invite to Ubelong Facebook page to connect and talk to other ubelongers.

A reminder to book flight as soon as possible

A reminder to make sure your passport is up to date and check if you need a visa to travel to the country you are traveling to

Instructions on how to set up a video chat meeting with one of the Ubelong staff to get more detailed information or ask any questions (I skipped this step. I wanted to know as less as possible and just trust the experience

On the Volunteer Information Form it asks for the following information:

Your passport number

Travel Medical Insurance number

Background Check .pdf file from VerifiedVolunteers.com

Your flight info and arrival time (so they know when to pick you up from the airport. They normally from the bus station)
