THE 3RD PIC IS INSANE????
Ellie and Gedeon could have had a scene like this and we'll die in heaven but they chose not to and now i have to keep yapping about them, about my tragic divorced parents😭
ok so idgaf bout what they say (they should've win many trophies) bc i don't speak German (though im this 🤏🏻 close to sign my ass into learning the language) but please can we talk about HOW THEY LOOK AND KEEP CLOSER AT EACH OTHER???? 😭💖 Julia's eyes are so charming like i love my woman so much 🧎🏻♀️💕
Now srsly speaking, I love their chemistry and wish I could see them working in more projects together and being closer platonic friends in general 💘
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kzq_c6RXX7Y
#i don't even know what to say we're robbed#now i'm seriously waiting for that comedy series of them to come out and idc if it's real bad

The whole film was so miserable but beautiful but the last scene, that one scene was beyond marvellous and had me thinking about ever since.

imagine Gedeon wakes up at Ellie's place and bumps his head everytime he tries to wash his face bc all the furniture is in Ellie's size
(this is canon btw)

I'm just watching, reading, scrolling through all of you 2 hypothesis and analysis. it was so good and thorough thanks for your dedications *sob*
The ending didn't really matter to me anymore, after a few days kept sleeping on it. What matters is that they reunited at the end, and peacefully sharing that dance (could be the last dance). And I think it's relieved to know that the ending is also a way to prove that both of them manage to free themselves from all the sufferings in this life. And the fact that Ellie was the last person Gedeon met (otherwise with Ellie) but not his mom (or her dad) or anyone else is more than enough to me.
But I really want to keep thinking about them and yapping about them even when the show ended so please don't stop sharing your thoughts of them, I'm all ears(ᗒᗩᗕ)
thoughts about the S3 ending!!!! a whole lot of thoughts, actually. (spoilers + analysis under the cut. i also kindly offer you a cup of tea and a seat because it got a bit long)
my take on the ending (and especially the dancing scene, my beloved) after crying and pondering about it a lot, is that it's almost a sort of semantic vacuum. did Gedeon die? yes. no. perhaps. did he even exist? it's everything but also nothing and vice versa, and completely up to the viewer.
i feel what is most important regarding that ambiguity is actually the song choice, so i'll digress a little. we know Gedeon’s favourite singer is Wolfgang Ambros, who is a 70's/80's austrian indie songwriter (having a dad who is the same all i can say is you horrible nerd. affectionately.), and a lot of scenes throughout the show were accompanied by situation-suitable songs by the artist. a lot of them are famous for being very ambiguously written, and often can be interpreted on several layers.
I drah zua / I’m closing aka the song in the scene fits this as well. On surface level the lyrics tell about the protagonist leaving a round of cards because he's made to participate but secretly doesn't want to; so he leaves, and looks forward to have his own freedom, play his own games. The song has been interpreted as being about leaving a societal structure, leaving a toxic workplace or relationship, moving towns or taking your own life because it's the only autonomy you have left. there's not one way of reading it, but what the song does convey is relief to leave something behind and anticipation for what is to come. that being said, i think if they wanted the ending to be distinctly conclusive, they'd chosen a different song (there's a few very clearly about death, like the one used during Yela's murder).
my friend, mum and i saw the same scene, but interpreted it vastly different in the end, and it's really beautiful because all of them somehow work.
personally, I have a decidedly weak heart and can/want to see it as a scenario in which Gedeon survived and they say goodbye to their destructive careers. for my friend on the other hand it was as a last goodbye of Gedeon's consciousness. my mum saw it as both Ellie and Gedeon dying, and meeting again in the afterlife. i'd argue it could also just be the entire show dissolving and bidding farewell to itself.
when I first watched it, i actually 100% expected it to be a symbolic but conclusive last meeting/afterlife scene as well - with Ellie coming in, them smiling to each other a last time and then him get up and leaving the café (or life) for good. But he… didn’t?
The café in the scene seems to fit the cinematic trope of the afterlife antechamber, as a familiar but eerily empty space fitting around the protagonist's spirits, like a place in a memory. And it does, somehow. But then again, it also doesn’t. Ellie and Gedeon the focus, but then you notice they’re not the only ones occupying the space. There’s other people, watching them dance, reading their newspaper, walking or driving by outside. It's not only their souls. As if it’s just a regular morning, and not some empty place in the afterlife.
It's as if they took certain tropes but twisted them just enough to allow some final ambiguity. We see Gedeon being revived, but not if it worked. We see Ellie at the pond, considering to throw the dice, but not if she does. We see Polt being freed, but still don't know if his whole folktale is true.
tl;dr: i think however one took the ending, it's probably not wrong at all

It's Ellie Stocker and Gedeon Winter. And they will run away together, to somewhere no one can find.
I understand the "I will die for you" ship dynamic, but what about the "I will not let you die, I will not let myself die- we will, at any cost, survive" kind of couple?

Now I understand why you call them "my divorced parents". All season 3 HURTS badly
ellie/gedeon moments that live rent free in my brain bc i’m very normal about them and whatever it is they have going on (spoilers for all three seasons under the cut)! also apologies bc this got.. long
all the nonverbal communication! just them looking at each other and knowing what's up
Ellie having nothing but respect for him since the beginning, despite literally everyone around her hating him💀
in S1 when Ellie is devastated because her affair went public and Gedeon almost instinctively puts a hand on her back for comfort but withdraws last second
Gedeon remembering Ellie loves nut pastries even though she mentioned it exactly once
Gedeon deciding to stay in the hospital with poisoned Ellie until she wakes up, fully aware it means they'll assassinate him but he's okay with it bc he then knows she's okay
Ellie literally always managing to strike a chord with him in arguments that makes him shut up (slay queen)
when Gedeon asks the nurse if anyone came to visit him during the time he was in a coma and she describes Ellie and his immediate reaction is going 🥺
bringing each other coffee unsolicitedly
Ellie when they decide to meet up with Gedeon’s former gang contacts in s2 and she's acting so very tough and cool and protective. even nods to the boss as if she's personally gonna throw hands with the guy. glares at them with absolute fury. SO mad at them for shooting her partner in law and crime (as she should be)
when the gang guy doesn't take her seriously and Gedeon who previously kept quiet immediately speaks up and goes 'dude. answer her😠'
same goes when Ellie wants to break a door open and one of their coworkers says 'shouldn't we wait for the boss?' and Gedeon goes 'SHE is the boss. do what she says idiot'
plus every time he backs her up when she's having trouble with a supervisor?? a supportive king fr we love to see it
them being super perceptive of each other
both wanting to be the person the other one talks to about problems but both also being horribly bad at being vulnerable
the entirety of their scenes in s3 actually. both of them being hurt and fed up with each other but the ground base of trust is still there. deep down neither of them wants to fight they just need to learn to properly talk things out (it's giving divorced parents fr)
how for Ellie, even after she broke with him, everything is about Gedeon. revengeful devotion bordering obsession. her private investigations, literally dating one of his coworkers for the sole reason to stay in his space somehow, ruthlessly cheating her way into the special commission. keeping friends close but enemies closer huh
protective Ellie protective Ellie protective Ellie🗣️🗣️🗣️
Gedeon holding onto Ellies hand when she moves to leave after she helped him when he collapsed????? goodbye never recovering from this ever actually
Ellie who is so fixed on her principles and inner sense of justice literally throwing her entire worldview overboard to back him in the end. poetic cinema
the very very last scene!!! the sheer softness of it!! jesus christ the way i SOBBED

Just freshly finished all 3 seasons and here are mine (you mentioned all my favs tho😭)
Ellie started greeting Gedeon "Servus" after they worked together as they were in Österreich, but in the beginning of s3, she changed it into "Hallo" because they were on bad terms (it's nothing but it means something to me idk)
Gedeon tried to find Ellie's whereabouts and phone number when she was discharged (he desperately needed to see her)
As soon as Gedeon heard about a German detective came and visited him, he rolled his wheelchair and rushed asap to the room because he badly wanted to see her again
They both becomes the other's clear state of mind and guide. When she almost shot her colleague, his voice kept her back to reality. And she becomes his in season 3
Gedeon refused the touch of her hands (broke my heart)
ellie/gedeon moments that live rent free in my brain bc i’m very normal about them and whatever it is they have going on (spoilers for all three seasons under the cut)! also apologies bc this got.. long
