#just thinking aloud but#i dunno. kind of feel like the last Barrier between me and Normal Personness or whatever#is just. i feel so completely and utterly unable to feel empathy specifically with regards to children and childbearing and childrearing.#like. i have known ever since i was small that my parents lost other pregnancies before me and between me and my sister. and all i could#feel about that as a kid was 'thank god because i never wanted a sibling anyway' and 'uh well i never asked to be born soooo... so what'#and now as an adult. i know that it's a terrible thing to suffer a loss like that.#and i'd at least manage not to act inappropriately towards someone i knew if they were in that position.#but i still can't find any of the *feelings* about it.#which is strange because i usually feel Everything So Much.#i also still don't understand when people talk about like. instantly falling in love with their kid or whatever#like maybe i almost get it if it's a child you've gestated for nine months and then given birth to.#but i feel like people *must* be at least partially lying about it when it comes to things like adoption#because there'd be such a high psychological and social penalty to admitting that you felt anything less.#adoption in general drives me crazy like i cannot Believe that it's still just a really accepted alternative to having a biological child#when... any kid who has had to be removed from the circumstances into which they were born and given to new people#is surely going to be traumatised or have issues or however you want to put it.#and it can't possibly be the Same Thing as having a... fresh baby of your own.#anyway. i feel some sympathy for and plenty of logical understanding of children and parents.#but none of it makes sense to me on the level on which i usually connect with people.#and hell maybe everyone feels that way until they have a kid. in which case i think everyone#is wildly irresponsible for having those kids without knowing they're gonna like it or be good at it and hoping it'll just work out. lmao

percy has been called smart by hazel, reyna, and annabeth (twice).
to say he’s actually dumb is to disagree with those three women. and if you are disagreeing with 3 of the most knowledgeable, capable, and badass characters in the series… what are you even doing?

I was going to add more panels of a synchronized strangle attack by team broppy, but decided that enough was enough...
Anyhow here's how I think the battle at Mount Rageous should've gone, with the lovely happy trolls using the hair as weapons of destruction </3 I know that Branch is in his healing era but I still think he would've resorted to his more violent methods somehow (this time with Poppy's full support).
Also, the reason why Viva's still using the sticky hands is because of this one hc I saw that the Putt-Putt trolls lost the ability to stretch their hair due to malnutrition :D

i think the saddest part about the husk shaking from fear because of alastor scene is that he never seemed afraid of him until now. he felt comfortable enough to talk to him, to offer advice and even to bite back when alastor started picking on him. there’s scenes in which they tease each other. husk knows a lot about alastor that nobody else (not even the audience) knows, whether he was purposefully trusted with this information or not, neither seem threatened by it. before that, husk simply seemed regretful to be indebted to him, like alastor was just a burden to bear. i think that’s why his reaction to alastor in that scene was so intense. alastor had perhaps never treated him so harshly before. and that scared the shit out of him. and probably felt akin to some sort of betrayal or something. like being reminded of the awful truth (that alastor OWNS him, that he COULD kill him, that he’d be happy to)

thinking about the ongoing discourse on who’s the best eater in jjk when it’s clearly choso, getou, and toji in that order.. (me thinking out loud, maybe u can call these headcannons idk)
Tumblr media
choso is the type to always no matter what put your pleasure before his, hell he won’t even think about himself when he’s going down on you. he takes instructions v well and listens to every to word to every whimper that comes out your mouth to make sure you finish everytime on his tongue. (major bonus points when you rake, pull, or tug his hair, he goes dumb over it. eyes rolling back, moaning as he eats you out, the whole nine yards.)
lemme tell you something. when getou ties up his hair it’s a WRAPP, i swear we need to give this man some credit. LIKE LETS LOOKS AT HIS FACE. HIS NOSE. PERFECT FOR SITT-… anyways. this man goes CRAZYY for face sitting, perfect opportunity to give some attention to your pretty thighs around his head. massaging them, pinching them every now and then, feeling how smooth they are as he tastes how good you are. ALSO. he’s definitely a man who keeps the art of fingering alive.
toji….now i don’t even like the man but i give props to where it’s due.. while toji appears to be the messy animalistic type, that’s exactly how he is ESPECIALLY when he eats you out. mans has little to no strategy and goes by what he feels like doing. he’s a cocky ass SHIT that always knows he’s doing exactly what he needs to be doing (i hate it sm) def thinks he prefers eating you out from the back, it’s something your ass being in the air that completely does it for him

Here’s a thought. Hunter bad batch (that is his full name, yes) has enhanced senses. We assume that means hearing, smell, taste, touch- maybe sight, but that’s more of a Crosshair thing.
BUT we know for sure it includes the ability to feel electromagnetic frequencies. Okay. Hear me out.
EMF reader.
What does EMF stand for? Electromagnetic fields. As far I as I know, these are not the same as electromagnetic frequencies. tomato tomahto
What’s an EMF used for? Detecting ghosts. In ghost hunting shows and games.
Are you picking up what I’m laying down??
I’m thinking: Hunter is a walking ghost detector.
I could be totally wrong. But it’s nice to dream

I was surprised that my solutions didn't crystallize over the past week to which my thesis supervisor said lightheartedly that it's normal and that he once waited for something to crystallize for THREE YEARS. I hope my solutions know I need to graduate some day.

A Batfam AU where instead of going to get Dick to be Robin again Tim uses necromancy to bring Jason back from the dead. He just leaves Jason on the Wayne doorstep with a 'do better this time' sticky note. Batman can't find out who did it and Tim stays his little latchkey self with semi ok but distant parents (cus canonical they weren't really abusive just not there which isn't good but they could be worse). His parents bring him along on trips but again they love him but they just leave him to do as he pleases. so in Paris he ends up still getting trained by Lady Shiva. This keeps going and Tim just keeps reviving batfam members, if they fake their deaths and Tim tracks them down to check on them. They still have no idea who their shadow is, they can't find him, Tim likes it this way. Bruce goes MIA and Red Robin happens just minus Tim actually being Red Robin. The JLA doorstep gets a passed-out Batman with a 'I can't believe I have to keep doing this shit' sticky note on his head.
#now you're probably going Batcaves i see those fics all the time? and my retort is those are babyified Tim Drake fics. he then gets adoped#the batfam and has a coffee addiction. i want a Tim Drake that treats the batfam like how wildlife rehab centers treat animals. they make#themselves knowable of the subject. they're striving to improve their quality of care. establish safe working habits. share skills. put car#of the subject over personal gain. be professional and humane. protect welfare of the subject. release the subject as soon as appropriate.#it's just his subject is batvigilantes not a racoon that was on the side of the road.#tim drake#batman#robin#dc comics#dc universe#detective comics#batman comics#batman and robin#batman au#and i think Jack and Janet being abusive is getting boring. have them be ok parents. they give tim a long leash but fail to see hes using i#for his own fun. they never told him he CANT learn necromancy and revive bat vigilantes how was HE supposed to know it's a bad thing??#maybe they should have looked at what he was doing while they were off. (like Phineus and Ferb. He asked if he could learn self-defense.#he learned from Lady Shiva not at the YMCA. He asked if he could read a book on necromancy! you didn't tell him he's not aloud to use what#he learned! he asked if he could go to the cemetery to see Jason! you didn't say he couldn't revive him! and so on)#Tim: mom can I learn self-defense while in Paris?#Janet: that's a good idea there are so many pickpockets here a little training would be nice for you. do you know a place?#Tim: Yes! her name is Sandra#Janet: cool. if you think she's the best choice. here some money.#Tim: Thanks Mom!#janet drake#jack drake#fanfic idea#fic idea#fanfic ideas#batfam

The potential of pre-Timkon featuring possessive friendships is not talked about enough.
Like, give me a Kon who shows up to every date Tim ever goes on, totally ruining the mood and claiming he thought he “heard danger”
Give me a Tim who somehow magically “needs Kon for a mission” every time that Kon is set to go out with someone.
Give me besties whose friendship borders on unhealthy because they just won’t fucking talk about anything. Give me a Tim who stares daggers at anyone who checks Kon out, yet who still denies he ever looks at Kon the same way. Give me a Kon who misuses his x-ray vision to keep eyes on Tim whenever they’re out, who is somehow always there whenever someone starts flirting with Tim.
Give me a Kon who purposely leaves his shirts in Tim’s room so that he might wear them, since he knows Tim doesn’t really look twice when getting dressed. Give me a Tim who secretly creeps into Kon’s bedroom to steal some of his cologne, sniffing his shirts before he leaves.
Give me two boys who are so obsessed with eachother that it’s so unhealthy until they talk about it!!! Give me two idiots so in love that they feel such deep-rooted irritation with the other, since neither of them will cave and talk about it!!

Thinking about how in season 2, the Doctor asked Rose "How long are you going to stay with me?" He could have asked her that in so many ways. "How long do you want to travel with me?" "When do you want to go home?" But he chose those words specifically. And Rose could have answered in just as many ways. "As long as I live." "As long as you'll have me." But instead she said one word. "Forever."
And the sad thing is that her answer was truer than any other answer she could have given. Because whether she realized it or not she wasn't saying how long they would be together. She was telling him how long she would be with him. As a memory, as a ghost, in his hearts. No matter who the Doctor is or how old they get, somewhere deep inside their soul, Rose will remain. Forever.

stream of consciousness thoughts about jp>en translation as it pertains to closeness in demon society, etc.
it's no mystery that when iruma asks azz and clara if he can think of them as friends, the word he uses is 友達/tomodachi. it's a casual word that denotes... you know, a friend. someone you like to spend time with. very straightforward.
there's also a more formal word for friend, 友人/yuujin, but to the best of my knowledge this one doesn't get used in mairuma, and this may be because it seems to strictly avoid using the 人 kanji (hito/jin/nin/person). it's often said that the way 人 is written makes it look like the two strokes are supporting one another, implying that people are things that live with the support of others. to my understanding this isn't the actual origin of the glyph, but it is a fairly common saying - and so it fits the worldbuilding nicely that the highly egocentric demons don't have 人 in their language. they do use the word "hito" sometimes, but I can't recall seeing it written in kanji
speaking of words demons do have, we see 仲間/nakama quite a bit, but while there are plenty of situations where it's valid to translate nakama to "friend," you don't actually have to like someone to consider them thus. someone is your "nakama" when you're united under the same banner, so to speak. it could be a classmate or a teammate or a coworker - anyone you share circumstances and goals with. the fact that this is one of the most friend-adjacent words demons have is also very like them.
demons also have 仲良し/nakayoshi and 仲が良い/naka ga ii, both of which describe getting along with and having a good relationship with someone. so demons do clearly have the concept of friendship, even if they don't have the word for it.
anyway, soulmates. the word iruma uses to describe what azz is to him is 親友/shinyuu, which is... I mean, it's really hard to translate this as anything but "best friend." it's a very close friend and/or someone you've been friends with for a long time. however, there's two reasons it's hard to translate 親友 to "best friend" specifically in the context of mairuma, both of which are summed up in this exchange:
Tumblr media
it's a word that azz doesn't recognize. demons have the word "best" and azz knows the word "friend," so why would he have to ask what a "best friend" is? shinyuu sounds completely unlike tomodachi, so to have the same effect, the english word used to translate it also has to sound completely unlike "friend"
iruma's kind of embarrassed about it. "best friend" is usually a rather light term in english and not one we'd typically get flustered talking about. your best friend might just be the person you like spending time with more than anyone else. you could be talking about the past and say someone "was your best friend back then" and it doesn't necessarily suggest that you had a falling out or anything, you might have just kind of drifted apart or met someone else you got even closer to or something similar. I don't know if I'm explaining this completely accurately but from what I gather, "shinyuu" is more of an intimate, time-tested friendship. there seems to be a certain level of emotional vulnerability associated with it that "best friend" doesn't always convey by default.
if absolutely pressed for an alternative translation, I might posit "kindred spirit," but that doesn't quite feel like as natural a thing to say as "soulmate." I do think it's a shame that it has that automatic romantic connotation, but honestly that's society's failure. embrace the concept of platonic soulmates, you cowards.
anyway, them's the thoughts.

pacing the room. Orsimer using the suffix "-wife" as a gender-neutral community title indicating one's functional social position rather than an exclusively marital term. ex: "forgewife" meaning a master blacksmith, under whom aspiring blacksmiths train; these are the people overseeing your most important smithing jobs and making sure your up-and-coming smiths are just as well-versed in fine detailing as they are in practicality and function. a community wife is therefore an authority figure of a kind, yes, but also one who has chosen to give as much of themselves as they can to the community IRT their specific skills; community members who hold a level of authority necessarily have a corresponding responsibility to their people.
orcish communal living requires a level of bracing yourself against your neighbors/allowing your neighbors to brace themselves against you that differs from more individualistic societies, which necessitates that the nuclear family be less of a rigid structure. children are the responsibility of every adult - you get just as much instruction and discipline and love from your fifty not-blood-related aunts and uncles as you do from your mom and dad. who you go home to at night is your individual thread in the many-stranded rope that makes up the community; if someone in your household needs help, then, you're their most immediate line of support. taking on the role of a wife (again, used as a gender-neutral term) in the context of a marriage therefore is saying "I choose to share first responsibility for your wellbeing."
this distinction leads to some interesting intercultural miscommunication - an outsider unfamiliar with orcish culture hearing about the existence of a forgewife, huntwife, herdwife, etc., assumes the title is being used in the way they're familiar with and that the chieftain has several wives by marriage; an orc unfamiliar with outside cultures learns the word "housewife" and assumes the title is being used in the way they're familiar with.

on masks
so shockingly miracle mask has huge mask theming in like every aspect. basically every significant character is 'wearing' a mask literally or metaphorically, except for luke who remarks in ludmilla's costume shop that he doesn't think any of the masks suit him (since the events of the previous game luke can be authentically himself now.) this is fun to notice on its own, but there's more to be discussed than just the presence of masks.
every mask in miracle mask backfires on its wearer to some degree! the most obvious case of this is descole and the masked gentleman straight up underestimating their own mask/s and failing to see their plans to the end, and the resulting consequences. dalston and henry's masks of stoicism turn out to have kept them from years of friendship they could have enjoyed, and paint them both as suspects in the masked gentleman case. angela's aloof facade and distance from everyone around her allows her to be kidnapped for a significant portion of the game without anyone but the professor noticing (and even then, he notices that something's up with her, but chalks it up initially as not knowing her anymore). less obviously, emmy's mask only means she'll end up hurting the people she has come to care for even more when the time comes.
most interesting to me, though, is hershel! even as a teen he's remarkably reserved, though clearly passionate. he keeps himself very controlled, and seems to care very much about coming across to others as helpful, grounded, and 'normal'. the interests that we know he has he keeps locked up, literally hidden away in cupboards, not to be acknowledged aloud to himself or others. he never gets angry or ever really displays any stereotypical teen behaviours apart from awkwardness.
now what this means is he is treated as the reliable one who will nonetheless go along with whatever randall wants him to do. he's never particularly assertive (something he will learn to be as an adult) so his willingness is taken for granted. he's put in mortal danger in akbadain because it never occurs to randall that hershel's protests are anything more than for appearance's sake.
and when randall falls and hershel is alone, he yells! he falls to his knees, completely overcome. he cries. he pushes through. and when he reaches angela and henry, alone, covered in dirt, looking completely haunted... they don't even ask him if he's okay. angela bodily shakes him. in the past and present, nobody treats hershel as if he's been through something traumatic - to everyone else, he was either a bystander to or complicit in randall's death, but controlled, mild-mannered and rational hershel is never considered a victim in his own right even after years have passed for everyone to think on it. years after the fact angela apologises to hershel... when she realises she needs his help. and henry immediately accuses him of betraying randall's memory and abandoning him.
and to be clear this isn't me saying oh they're evil or whatever but it's significant that they acknowledge how the trauma affected them and their behaviour from that point forward but it doesn't occur to them that hershel's behaviour and life trajectory was also altered forever! because hershel has for his whole life masked so well that to everyone else he does not have an interior life that isn't puzzle solving.
and the absolute funniest thing about it is that when hershel confesses this all to emmy and luke.... it's immediately back to the investigation, "where do we go now professor!" i'm sure there's no reason to ask if hershel's okay, he's probably unaffected by all that, let's go! readers i laughed out loud. tfw you mask so well everyone forgets you're a person

Writing a fic set in the Golden Age is WILD because there is such minimal worldbuilding information in the novels but so many implications??
Like, I haven't read the picture books (yet), only the novels, but looking at Joyce's art it seems like anyone from the Golden Age - or who has inherited that magic like the Guardians - doesn't need to breathe. They can just. Exist in space. With no suits or insulated ships to provide oxygen:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Everything follows the same Treasure Planet rules, where you can take a dinghy out into some stardust with no protective gear lol
Tumblr media
I'm not really going anywhere with this I just love figuring out the finer details of how stuff like this works in terms of world building. It makes me wonder if Joyce thought 'this is a series about belief and magic, so of course the characters can do wondrous things like breathe in space!' or if somewhere in his brain is the full depth of how their natural ability to exist in space came to be, and how it effected their societies and travel and where the people of the Golden Age built their homes. So much if it is implied in the little details or in illustrations but it just makes me curious to know more!!
