my friends! my mutuals! my brothers in arms (fandom)! i love seeing the people around me be creative, and seeing them play in the same sandbox as me fires up my own creativity in a way that nothing else seems to do! love seeing my friends have fun! reminds me that i can have fun with my work too!

books! i love words. love to chew on them like a pack of gum. and all of the AUs i've written abt my favorite books (and the thousand more in my ideas file) is proof of that i think hehe. i love returning to books when i'm feeling particularly blocked (like.....recently :///). seeing people play with words and language and character and plot makes my brain go !!! you can do that too!

movies! i am a strange bean who prefers movies to tv shows - partly because i hate when a show i like goes in a direction i dislike. and also movies are so analogous to books in a way i really enjoy. there's something really satisfying about just getting hit with a single story in one sitting. characters that you follow for a bit, and then can part ways with. it helps with pacing, and also i think a lot of movies have the room to be experimental in a way tv shows don't usually. goes back to that one thing i talked about that one time with telling the same story in different mediums. there's a lot of techniques that work in visual media but not in written - super fascinating to me to try and understand why that is.

poems! returning to language at its most artistic. divorcing it from all the other aspects of storytelling and understanding the musicality of it! i need to read more poetry......

songs! this one is low on the list bc i do have a lot of ideas inspired by songs, but i haven't quite yet figured out how to convert those into writing. mostly they're just..vibes sitting there in my doc taunting me. haunting me. really, what is the difference?

Types of Adaptations

I've recently been reading the original books for a lot of movies/shows I've previously enjoyed, and it's got me thinking a lot abt adaptations, and what works or doesn't for me. I think there's more to adaptation than just being "good/bad" or even just being "faithful" to the original content or not, and I kinda wanna throw my thoughts out to see what ppl think

anyways, adaptation types:

extremely faithful adaptations that skillfully utilize a new medium to share and even enhance the original content: Mob Psycho 100 anime

adaptations that actively improve/fix the original story. the fans behind these projects clearly understand the original, and know exactly what needs to be changed to complete the original work: Death Note the Musical

adaptations that unfortunately had to cut a lot, but what's there is very faithful. you can tell they did their best within the set time/money limit: Watership Down '78

adaptations that are largely textually faithful (for the most part), but approach the tones/themes in slightly different ways from the original. it's like hearing the same story from a new narrator-- the beats are the same, but what/how the narrator chooses to emphasize changes how it hits: Howl's Moving Castle movie

adaptations that aren't necessarily textually faithful, but maintain a similar thematic tone to the original, despite taking it in a new direction. some ppl may not appreciate an "unfaithful" adaption strategy no matter the quality, while others may appreciate these adaptations as familiar but ultimately new stories: Haunting of Hill House tv show, Annihilation movie

adaptations that went completely off the rails from the original. they're so different that it's difficult to grade their quality as anything but their own stand-alone story-- "faithful" is no longer a useful critique strategy here (though fans of the originals may have appreciated a different title, at the very least): FMA '03, HTTYD movies

adaptations that are largely textually faithful on some level, but change enough small details that shift the underlying context/themes in irrevocable, adverse ways: Fried Green Tomatoes movie

adaptations that attempt to "modernize" the original for the present audience, but end up sanitizing/simplifying the characters/themes into flattened, overused tropes instead: Trigun Stampede, Devilman Crybaby

adaptations that add unnecessary, unwanted content that actively degrades the original story: Arrival movie (adapted from Ted Chiang's "The Story of Your Life"), The Lorax movie

But apparently you can’t stop posting about me so, yeah, I think that’s a little sad. I hope that you learn how to have a discussion in the future. dude i think you literally just cannot have a proper discussion without somehow managing to tire people out 😭 it was actually crazy how you wouldn't accept poverty being a character motivator, im literally not aristotle do you think im going to focus on a characters motivations that deeply when im watching a movie, im literally going to focus on the cinematography and the score and atmosphere more because it's visually stimulating

it was actually genuinely so frustrating trying to get that through to you and trying to give you an answer that would make you stop asking pen and i the same question over and over again, oh my god 💀 ive literally seen you do the same thing with other people on ur blog that try to talk abt movies or books & the like, like you genuinely come across as someone who thinks their opinion is right, and im sorry that im saying it like this but then i really do need you to understand 😭 like no matter how much you read Aristotle or shakespeare or whatever it's not going to make you a good critic if you can't look at stuff and acknowledge the different thought processes that have gone into mediums & storytelling, looking at the skeleton of an art piece is the same as looking at nothing at all if youre not going to acknowledge the flesh of it.

like if you genuinely think that movie has bad writing I can't help you, bcs you haven't even watched it and if you're going to try and criticise it and say "oh, this is bad writing" just because one singular person on the internet gave you a motivation you didn't agree with then like,,,, Look Inwards. im not even mad that you don't like the film, im mad that a person like you who seems to look at all aspects of a movie, including its production period (see: you and amethyst discussing the Hobbit movies) suddenly hears word about it from people who are amateur writers (well i am one—pen has a whole degree) and decides yeah this movie's bad. it was such a shallow and absolute statement that you made after making me try to circle around not spoiling the whole movie for literal hours, and then YOU got mad that I was coming off as passive aggressive when i stopped caring abt how my tone may come across on pixels. i have been talking to you on and off for like more than a year, did you think that unpleasant tone came out of nowhere ???????

nobody in the whole world will care if you've read a few classics if you literally cannot apply them properly to all the media that surrounds you. you understood i was frustrated that dc didn't care about art without me spelling that out but you couldn't understand i was trying not to spoil a movie you haven't watched after making me go around in circles for so long, and then you get mad when i try to explain to you WHY i cant answer your question and then you get mad because my tone was off?? after id spent more than an entire hour trying to defend why i like a movie that i didn't even care if you hadn't watched in the first place because i just wanted to ramble about a movie to someone who i thought appreciated the arts like i do ??? art is literally not black and white but you always manage to come across as someone who views it as either very good or very bad, that is literally not how i view it and i tried to tell you that and instead of understanding where i came from you decided to become passive aggressive with me because my tone was slightly off when i tried to tell you that maybe you shouldn't have asked me that question when i wasn't even talking abt character motivations to begin with 😭

just had a conversation with my friend after she finished reading daisy jones (she watched the show then read it, i read it about a year or 2 ago and have yet to see the show) and i want to share

to me, a major theme of the story was how little we know abt the characters. how the contradictions in the perspectives called into question what else had been fabricated. we are only told what these people are willing to share on record. what they remember from bad periods of their lives where they were almost all on multiple mind altering substances. we only get their recollection of the events tainted by regret, pain, love. for me, this highlighted the scenes where we only get one pov. the overdose, daisy's relationship with her parents, the fights between graham and karen. the singular pov was emphasized by group scenes where everyone had a different recount of the story. i finished the book without knowing the characters. without knowing what version of events really happened. and that felt like the point.

for my friend, the story discussed the intricacies of relationships and how negatively you can affect someone's life. there wasnt the element of ambiguity in what actually happened. in the book you are told their emotions and have to infer the scenes. in the show you are given the scenes and have to infer the emotions.

i think this, in its simplest terms, displays the creative liberties that must be taken depending on the medium utilized to tell stories. in a book, the inner monologue is prominent, describing surroundings and people through the eyes of the pov character. a tv show or movie doesn't have this freedom and, in this case, presents the scene THE way it happened, which, to me at least, removes the key theme of the story.

i might update once ive watched the show, but. if u read this, i am so sorry for rambling lol :)

so my original tags passed peer review several times over, and now after almost two months and 10k+ notes i want to rehash my old tags and talk abt why snow doesn’t let himself choose lucy gray, and why suzanne wrote it in the best was possible, and why it’s a tragedy that it could never be pulled off the same way through a visual medium, so if you’ll humor me:

the importance of how this moment is communicated in books is that, in spite of everything, until this moment, there is a very illogical, very tiny bit of hope we can have for snow. idk maybe not everyone had that hope that he would go with lucy gray (like duh, we know who he becomes), but in spite of myself, I definitely remember feeling a bit of hope. because yes, his inner monologue repeatedly proves him to be a self-aggrandizing asshole, and yes, i know what a truly horrible tyrant he is in the trilogy, and yes, i know that’s where all of this is headed, but… who wouldn't take this opportunity? a kid like coriolanus needs a fresh start and real love, the kind lucy gray has extended to him, not the manipulative self-serving relationships he had in the capitol. he hates this vulnerable kind of love but he needs it, he wants it, and it’s right in front of him with nothing stopping him for the first time in the narrative. he has to take it, of course he will take it, even though i know he does not.

the cabin breakdown is the violent snuffing of that illogical hope. the reminder that i was always going to watch him pass every exit to a better life, because he had already learned to prefer power to love. it was always going to end this way— not because he was destined to become president snow like some greek tragedy, but because he had already chosen to become president snow, from the very first chapter. he daydreams about it the entire book! he spends the book figuring out all the right ways to pose himself so that no one can see through his many layered facades! why should it shock me then he would attack shadows in the forest in case it’s lucy? why would i ever hope for a different ending than the one we already know was written?

i think it shocks me because i thought i knew what coriolanus didnt— i knew his fate, but then, so did he; we’re actually on the same page as him that he is president snow. but i thought that multiple other paths were open to him, that any of those paths would have been better than the one he barreled down, and that snow was simply blind to this. but snow wasn’t just pushed onto this path— not just primed to seek power and security at all costs by circumstance, by every authority in his life, by the conditions of the capitol. at some point, snow chose it for himself. at some point, he decided he would do anything to be in control. at some point, no other destiny than the one we already know could have satisfied him.

but the point where he makes this decision for a final time doesn’t come before the narrative ever began, doesn’t precede all his thoughts of becoming president one day that we hear from the beginning of the book. the decisive moment happens at the cabin, in the moment that his flimsy resolve to go with lucy crumbles without her prodding like she does in the movie. she goes to pick katniss, she’s taking a while, and then it all very quickly, very dramatically, falls apart completely inside snow’s head and he charges out of the cabin, gun in hand, ready to unloaded an entire magazine into the trees while spinning wildly hoping to hit her. and as the reader you're just sitting there, jaw dropped, like what the hell just happened?

because for all his talk, for all his delusions of grandeur, for all his climbing and scheming, once snow was shipped out to the districts, he had no idea how he could ever get back to the destiny he had before the games. but sending that tape to gaul was an experiment— testing whether the powers that be had actually cast him off for good. and it turns out, they hadn’t. they were listening. they were paying attention. a life of power was suddenly possible again, and maybe, just maybe, he would not have to settle for love, wouldn’t have to lower himself to vulnerability and openness.

and so lucy gray, for all her charms, for all her offer of perfect break with his past, is now not just a loose end in his crimes, but an obstacle to getting back to that life of power that it is utterly ingrained in him to prefer. if he can just prove to himself that maybe this was never even an option… and, well, who was he kidding? of course she wasnt just going to pick katniss; of course she was leaving him behind; of course she never intended to bring him along. what a fool she’s played him for—of course he never had any other destiny than the one his life in the capitol had laid out for him. this quaint little backwoods life was never an option. she was never an option. he has to get back, back to district 12, back to his base, back in dr. gaul’s good graces, back to the capitol, back to the destiny that was always his, the one that he has fought tooth and nail for, the one he won’t give up now, not for anything, and definitely not for the uncertain future lucy gray seems so content to lead him into.

as he talks to himself in that cabin, he cements his commitment to his imagined destiny, he makes it real and certain in a way in hasn’t been in the narrative so far. because even though we knew who he become, it’s at this moment that we understand that he never could’ve been anyone else, no matter how many other options and exits were presented to him. he could've run away with her! he could've start fresh, turn a new leaf, lead a better life outside panem with lucy gray! but he is so insane with his desperation for security and power that we finally see him as we know him to be in the original trilogy. he casts her off, cuts his last tie to his humanity, passes his final exit sign, and careens toward the end we always knew was coming like a car on black ice. the cabin scene as it’s written in the books is as shocking and impactful as it is because it’s the moment coriolanus becomes snow. it’s the moment he lets his ruthlessness fully take the wheel, the moment we see he is willing to choose the unfeeling, cold, and calculated cruelty we are so familiar with from the trilogy without anyone having demanded it from him. it arises from within. it is fully a part of him. and he inflicts it even on those he loves the most.

tldr: until the cabin scene, there were other possibilities open to snow, despite of our knowledge of the end. but not anymore. after the cabin, there is no hope of ever turning back. and that suzanne collins manages to shock you that a violent and unfeeling tyrant could be so violent and unfeeling is a feat of storytelling, in my opinion.

listen there really was just something about how in the book, snow’s 3-page descent from hesitant lover boy to deluded psychopath happens entirely in his mind. lucy gray gives him no indication whatsoever that she suspects him, that she’s going to leave or betray him. he’s just sitting quietly in the cabin waiting for her to return when that seed of calculated suspicion, which he has needed to survive the capitol, takes a hold of him and chokes the life out of any goodness left inside him. it really drives home your terror as a reader that “oh my god did he kill her? did she escape? what happened to her? why would he even think that?” in a way that when the movie had to adjust for visualization it lost some of that holy shit this guy has lost it emphasis.

i have another theory that the popularity of garbage big industry rehashed media like the mcu + constant disney reboots + pixar recycling of the same structured story with specifically timed emotional moments, and the internet's endless formulaic fanfiction and AUs of the same characters that fans are already familiar with in slightly different scenarios, feed into each other in a regurgitative creativity-killing cycle.

the disney industrial complex needs u to keep taking the easy thoughtless feel good path in media consumption so u keep buying into their next spiderman movie number 4 (the 5th). and fans love watching beloved characters interacting with the safety net of already know each other from 6 previous movies so they can shove them into a "found family" trope despite the lack of actual emotional chemistry on screen.

maroon: what role do you play in your group of friends? interesting question! i think im a bit of a mix between the cool dad and the weird uncle, at least with im with my gayest closest friend group. i tend do do weird ass shit and act out in public when im around my friends, but im also the person who can be a bit stern or tell people to mind their behaviour, to make plans or to pick out the faults in other people's plans, or make decisions for the group. a bit stern but at the same time letting people do whatever, be a bit relaxed abt everything, and making sure everyone has fun and is comfortable

carnelian: at what point did your life change without you realising? uhh im not really sure, honestly. most things that have changed my life i was pretty conscious about as it was happening, like deciding i wanted to study history when i was 15 and then sticking with that throughout high school lmao. maybe though it's the numerous times i really wanted to be some male character in a book, film or video game. in retrospect you could almost say that every single one was one step closer to realising im transmasc lol (though some more than others)

scarlet: think of your favourite genre. what kind of media in that genre do you prefer - books, films, or tv series? my favourite genres are fantasy and historical fiction, and i prefer books for both. films and series can be very nice, especially because you get to see and hear views and characters, but world building always suffers in films bc there's not much space to do it well, and im not great at watching series (i give up at some point lol). and also book-based series can just suck when they start ignoring the source material. books are simply the medium best suited to both in-depth world building and creating long and satisfying character arcs because they don't need to cut corners to stay within a time/episode limit or bc of a limited budget. i love downton abbey tho

imperial: what film, in your opinion, has the best cinematography and/or special effects? this is one of those things that i know i have Opinions abt but now that someone asks me a question i've forgotten every movie i've ever watched. when it comes to cinematography i was actually pretty impressed with the batman, especially for a superhero movie. it's not necessarily innovative but they did a lot of interesting things with colours and lighting despite almost all of the story taking place at night, and it makes for some very striking shots/scenes. contributes highly to the general feeling of the environment and the narrative, which i think is imperative of cinematography. for this same reason i've always liked the cinematography of in the mood for love. it's of a very different quality, not meant to be loud and striking but rather to give the feeling of being near to the subjects of the shot, of having little space, and yet there's a fleeting quality to many of the shots that compliments the themes of the movie itself. honestly though there's a lot more movies that have cinematography that i enjoy a lot, but these are the two that come to mind rn! if we're talking special effects, there isn't one movie i would say is 'the best', but i vastly prefer it when movies know how to balance cgi with actual sets and practical effects. nothing i dislike more than knowing and seeing that whole sets and people and outfits were created w/ cgi alone

i definitely think you're on to something about how the actual format of comics is something that people are unknowingly unhappy with in ttt. not to be all "the medium is the message" on this, but in the case of comics and the enjoyment of comics, it very much is about that. comics as a medium as considered cool media, which means that it's necessary for the reader to engage multiple senses in order to understand the material and must fill in gaps in content themselves. this creates necessary genre conventions to make the material more understandable, but that can be kind of daunting and confusing to people just starting off. the way that you read comics is not the same as watching a movie or reading a book because active participation of the interpreter is necessary for understanding comics. that's not to say that there aren't valid criticisms of the original comic and ttt (there absolutely are) but it's also totally possible that if someone hasn't been enjoying the comics then maybe comics as a medium just aren't for you and that's totally fine! if anyone's interested in this concept, definitely check out marshall mcluhan's work or even "Understanding Comics" by scott mccloud

yeah! ive read plenty of books/movies that wowed me, but i think the most a comic has ever inspired in me is 'oh, thats cool'. i think a lot of people want the tog comics to make them feel the exact same way the movie did which, 1.) the two universes are different tonally (on purpose!) and 2.) Comics Just Be Different.

i havent liked any of the comics half as much as i liked the movie, but i never expected to do so. and i dont wanna say 'well, lower your expectations everyone' but comics are just different and thats not a bad thing. & theres certainly no need to rag on the artists/authors just bc a medium isnt to your [generic your] liking.

so when u come in and go “here is The Marvel Film……i think its exciting for me personally and that’s the best i can do :)” it’s like… lvkfovofgbfg you’re literally getting paid millions of dollars to do this and you’re using it as an opportunity to write glorified fanfiction? alright.
