First of all, Marinette is not a victim.
Her being in a fucked up situation does not mean she is personally victimized by the double nonsense of Adrien being a sentimonster and Gabriel mind controlling him.
Marinette is not constantly under threat of having her autonomy taken away.
Marinette isn't being lied to by everyone she loves.
Marinette's brain bomb trigger isn't in the hands of Felix.
It being "hard" and "impossible" for her to have an actual conversation with the boy she supposedly respects is not an excuse for her to avoid it just because it makes her uncomfortable.
Just because it isn't easy doesn't mean she's blameless.
And as long as Adrien doesn't know he could be unceremoniously killed I really don't care why some dead guy's words have more weight in Marinette's head than her literal boyfriend's life.
Adrien and Marinette are orders of magnitude apart.
Second, most of the people I've seen who criticize Marinette's actions also criticize everyone else who is lying to Adrien.
If it looks like we pile everything on Marinette it's because we expected better.
Nathalie thinks mind controlling Adrien is okay as long as it's "for his own good". And she doesn't actually try to stop Gabriel until she feels he's desecrated Emilie's memory too much.
Note that last part: Nathalie cares more about the memory of a dead woman than the abuse said woman's child is currently going through.
Felix can literally kill Adrien whenever he feels like it and Kagami hasn't had her own personality since they replaced her with "Felix's girlfriend".
Oh, and Aunt Amily did literally nothing to protect Adrien when she found out and has continued doing nothing ever since.
None of these people are perfect vehicles for telling Adrien the truth but I would accept literally any of them as long as Adrien found out who's been lying to him.
And... I have trouble being sympathetic to "everything being on Ladybug" because she literally refuses to trust the person who's been there for her since day one.
Chat Noir saw that she was overworked and stressed but when he offered to help she lashed out at him. Convincing herself that it was his own fault for being in love with her and not because she was being a terrible leader.
As a neurodivergent and child abuse victim I have heard too many variations of "It's not your fault but it is your responsibility." To pretend like none of this is Marinette's fault.
The circumstances might be beyond her control but her reaction to them is still on her.
Oh, and people like me have been criticizing the sentimonster nonsense since before it was confirmed.
Telling anyone who will listen that this bullshit will just result in objectifying a character that's represented child abuse victims for years.
That making Adrien a sentimonster will just encourage abuse apologism takes like: Lying to an Abuse Victim About Their Abuser isn't That Bad Actually.
And: The Feelings of This Character Who isn't a Child Abuse Victim are More Important than Said Child Abuse Victim's Actual Trauma.
I have been told repeatedly to shut up about how Marinette's writing turns her into an abuse apologist.
Assumedly because people love the sentimonster plotline until you actually force them to take it to its logical conclusion.
Throwing this in asks instead of a reblog so you can not have it hanging off your post if you don't want it.
Re:Curse on Marinette
It's only a curse because of Marinette's own flaws(which, if acknowledged is excellent for a narrative) See, it's only a curse because just like Gabe she sees Adrien as a special porcelain object, to be handled and admired, but still an object.
Marinette is very *different* from Gabe in execution at the moment, but with the narrative claiming Gabriel really loved him... The parallels grow. Gabriel is just Marinette further down the same path. Yes she gave Adrien back control of himself, but she's got plenty of time to change her mind if she continues down the Gabriel road. 'Adrien needs to be protected' is denying autonomy in silk-wrapped terms.
Will knowing the truth hurt Adrien? Yeah, of course. The healthy thing to do is tell him and then *be there to support him* as he works through his reactions to it.
This is the same Adrien who with care, patience, and kindness supported Marinette through her trauma-recovery in season 5. This guy, this is the one who is 'too fragile'? What does that make her?
This isn't directed at you personally, just addressing the narrative setup broadly and the reads that doesn't seem to quite fathom what they are suggesting.
I understand where you are coming from⊠but I disagree.
I think itâs less about Marinette viewing Adrien as porcelain and more like
âWhat person would not have a complete mental break after learning all of this?â Not to mention the potential magical shenanigans that comes into play here.
Marinette, a 14 year old girl is forced into a situation that any individual would find IMMENSELY FUCKED UP. There is no easy way of telling a person that everything they know is a lie and that their existence resulted in the deaths of his parents. Flaws or not.
Not to mention, there are other people that could tell Adrien these facts but donât have this level of emotional trauma and blackmail to deal with. Such as Nathalie.
Marinette is a victim here. And WILL be receiving all of the blame for s*** completely out of her control.
Now donât misunderstand. I ABSOLUTELY HATE everything about this. Gabriel is a monster for this. Itâs TERRIBLE Writing. (It can be saved if handled correctly, but I have reasonable doubt).
But the one thing I canât do is blame Marinette. Because there are others that could better handle this, but because she is Ladybug itâs all on her.

GIVING CHLOE THE LADYBUG MIRACULOUS TO ANNOY THOMAS ASTRUC LETâS GOOOOO!!!
What caused this anomaly was that Marinette was early for school, so she wasnât there to help Master Fu. So no one helped Master Fu across the street, and he ended up having to dash to the other side of the street to avoid the car, and ended up falling like Marinette did, dropping the mini miraculous box. Master Fu is discombobulated and just walks away with the miraculous still there. Luckily everyone in Paris is stupid, so no one picks it up. Chloe walks by the bakery that morning, and picks up the box.
In this AU, Chloe completely takes the place of Ladybug, name and all (Ladybug and Chat Noir just sound the best together, and do you really think Chloe could come up with a more interesting name than Marinette on the spot? Heheh, get it? On the spot?).
When Chloe first transforms, she messes around with her superpower before loosing control of her yo-yo and crashing into Chat Noir. They donât work together in harmony at first (Ladybug (Chloe) wonât do what Chat Noir suggests and Chat Noir wonât stop complaining about Ladybug) causing them to fail at beating Stoneheart. They go their separate ways after haphazardly releasing the akuma, and Chloe renounces Tikki, saying she wasnât the one chosen for the role, and it was pretty obvious that sheâs not cut out to be a hero. With the multiplying of the akuma, though, Tikkiâs words come back into her head, âYouâre needed. Anyone can be a hero.â and with renewed strength, goes out again to stop it for good. She gets along a lot better with Chat Noir, her main goal being to stop the akuma rather than stand out more. They âpound itâ and head their separate ways, both thinking theyâve finally made a real friend. When the akuma is officially gone, Chloe thinks about revealing who she is for the glory, but remembers what Tikki said about secrecy, and backs out last minute.
Iâm probably not gonna make another part to this, so hereâs some of the ideas I had for the AU:
The AU would focus on Chloe struggling with her jealousy and selfishness while also having to be the better person so that Paris doesnât get obliterated. Tikki is moral support, and helps Chloe become a better person. Adrinette is endgame still. I would also add in my own headcanons of the characters, yknow. Chloe has a crush on Marinette, but knows she doesnât like her back. Chloe would talk to Tikki about how hard it is sometimes to get ready in the morning knowing her body doesnât look like how she wants it (trans girl Chloe ftw!!!). And she would rant about how stupid and blind and pretty Marinette is, the blindest person she knows (with the exception of Adrien himself). And cry about how she knows sheâll never like her back because she loves Adrien. And ofc her mom n stuff. She also would have a conversation with Tikki about Plagg and help her through those complicated feelings.

The Truth
Note: aaa it took a while, I hope you like it. Let me know if this needs a part two. I enjoyed writing it.
Luka Couffaine x Reader | ONE SHOT
"You have a date, lover boy?" You said while finishing tuning your guitar to standard as Luka's contacting Marinette, he turned to you and smiled. "Yeah, we're going to the movies today, we missed our date yesterday." "Say hi to Macaroon from me." You placed your guitar inside its case and picked it up. "It's Marinette and I will." He said and hugged you. "I know, it's her pet name from me." You patted his back and broke away from the embrace. "I'll see you next time." You started walking and left Liberty to go home.
It's hard for you to let Luka and Marinette's relationship sink in, since you didn't got the chance to confess your feelings for him. Being honest with your feelings isn't your forte, so someone beat you to it. Your heart can't take it whenever the two of them are being intimate to each other, lucky for you you're good at hiding what you really feel and it's like winning at Poker yet losing at love.
Even though it hurts you, you can't bring to find yourself avoiding them. They're both really precious friends of yours and you don't want to taint that, and you don't want to explain why you're avoiding them once they notice. Lying about it is a solution, but lies pile up like dirty dishes and will be hard to clean when it's really stained. So, you believed yourself that you'll get over it soon, but you didn't.
You're headed to Pont des Arts to take pictures for your personal collage when you saw Luka eating an ice cream while leaning on the railings. You approached him and tapped his shoulder. "Hey, what are you doing here?" He looked at you. "Marinette and I were out on a date, she said she's going to get napkins but she's still not here yet and the ice cream started melting." You also leaned on the railings next to Luka. "Maybe something came up? Which got her mind off from getting the napkins? You know Marinette, she's easily distracted." You chuckled. "She'll get here soon." You added.
"What about you? I'm sure you're in the middle of doing something." He reminded you, and you noticed his ice cream is melting and got a handkerchief from your pocket and handed it to him. "No, it's okay. I'll just eat it quickly." He refused to accept it but you insisted. "Oh really? On that side, it's gonna drip on your hands." You pointed his ice cream cone and he quickly resolved it. "And it's sticky once it dries, so accept it." You wiped the other melted ice cream drips and gave the handkerchief to him. "Wash it clean, okay?" "I will. Thanks, (Y/n)." "Oh, and answering your question, I'm currently out for picture taking." You held up your camera and fakes a click. "It's for my photo collage and my wall." You added.
"Wanna take a picture together?"
"Sure."
"Hey, you all ready?" Rose asked and looked at us. "Yes, whenever you're ready!" you said enthusiastically, ready to play the bass but Luka spoke on the mic. "I want to dedicate this song to Marinette, the girl... Who's not here as usual." You looked at him sadly but you came back to your senses when Ivan counts in. A girl then suddenly runs in and sat, it was Marinette. You smiled at her and she waves at Luka and you.
When the song was finished, you quickly approached Luka and talked to him. "Are you alright?" He didn't respond, he was frowning. You didn't know what to do to lift his spirits up a little. You were thinking of something to find a way to assure Luka when you noticed Adrien and Kagami. They were talking about how they got here from disappearing from their strict schedule, then it hit you. "You know, everything happens for a reason." Luka looked at you, he just finished packing up things. "After the conversations we've had about the two of you. We're both convinced that there's something going on with Marinette. How about you ask her where she goes when she disappears and then you'll know the truth. That way, whenever she goes somewhere you're assured." You continued and smiled at him. He nodded and went to talk to Marinette.
You stared at the two of them for a minute then you focused back on what you were doing. 'Darn, I'm the one hurting myself.'
"Bye, guys! I'll see ya, I'll go home with them." You picked up the guitar case and went near Alya. "Bye, guys, see ya!" Alya said when suddenly a light was shone on her. Her lips turned white and a person who seems to be a villain appears, you noticed the guitar pick 'Luka?'. The villain asked Alya to reveal Marinette's secret. "She's in love with Adrien Agreste." Her answer annoye the him. Still seeking for an answer which will satisfy his mind; he approached Rose to get her but was defended by Juleka and still uttered the same answer. Ladybug stepped in to rescue us but she was caught by him. You were ready to get in the way but Chat Noir saved her and jumped into the water. Much to the villain's annoyance, Anarka suddenly stepped out from the cabin and was spotted by the light which made her utter the awaited answer of Luka's question. "Luka, your father is Jagged Stone." You gasped and he repeated it one more time and still got the same answer.
After he left, you checked each of your friends if they were alright. Alya, Juleka and Ms. Anarka's lips were still white. 'What happened? How did he get akumatized? Did Mari not tell him?' Everyone stayed in the ship for safety as they figure out how to erase the lip color. "It's magic, so we can't really get it out." "But girl, I don't look good with white lips." You giggled from Alya's response. "I think Ladybug and her Lucky Charm will help us." "She always do." She smiled, your conversation was interrupted when Nino talked to her. Knowing Alya's fine you then spoke to Ms. Anarka to check if she was okay. She was stunned by the sudden confrontation earlier. "I'm sure he's not angry." You assured her and gave her a warm hug.
It was morning, and Luka's finally de-akumatized when Ladybug's Lucky Charm fixed the mess he made. Everyone agreed to go home but you still waited at the ship for Luka along with Juleka. "So... are you gonna confess or something?" Juleka suddenly uttered. "What? Where did that come from?" You giggled. "No, You and Luka are my bestest friends. I'm not going to confess. I'm just worried about him like you." You cleared up. "Really?"
"Yeah."
"I don't think so. I've been with you two for our whole lives, don't think I don't notice what's going on. Many might have a hard time reading you but I'm not like them." You're surprised by how chatty Juleka is right now. What is there to lie about now? You sighed and confessed. "Okay, you're right. I have feelings for him, did you think he noticed?" You panicked, realizing that Juleka picked up about your feelings for Luka, you got nervous whether he noticed it too. 'Am I not great at hiding my feelings like what I believed? Am I just like Marinette when she's near Adrien?' thoughts circulated your mind and you came back to your senses when Juleka spoke. "I don't think so." She touched your shoulder and went inside the cabin. 'Yeah, maybe I was just thinking it.' You noticed someone coming near and it was Luka, you waved at him and he smiles back. When he finally got into the ship, you asked him what happened. "Marinette can't tell me the truth." "I'm sorry." That was the only thing you could say, you want to stay and let him talk about his issues but you can't. It was already morning, your parents must be worried sick, so your first priority is to go home and let your parents know you're okay. You hugged and bid him goodbye and left the ship. You'll visit Liberty next time.
"Are you going to tell him yet?" Rose excitedly tells to your face. You just entered Liberty and confrontation was already setting it's place. "Yeah, girl, when are you going to tell him?" Alya also spoke.
"Yes! At first I didn't think there was something going on."
"Yeah."
The girls were surrounding you, you were confused. "Tell what to whom?"
"Your feelings with Luka! Silly."
"Woah, woah, woah, hold on, where is this coming from?" You held up your hands to calm down the situation. "Well, the other day we were talking about Luka and Marinette and after some more talking, you came to the picture and Juleka confirmed. She thought we were all aware but we were totally not." Alya answered. "Okay, first of all, that was unexpected and I'm not going to confess." They didn't expect your answer. "Why?"
"Yeah, why not?"
"Well, I think I know what will be Luka's answer. Come on, he's totally head over heels for Marinette." You answered. "Look, he may like Marinette but what's the harm in confessing? Maybe the answer's not what you were expecting." Alya said and the girls agreed. "Come on, be a bit possessive." She added and the girls also agreed. 'Maybe I should do it, I didn't get to confess on my first decision to do it. Alright, I'm gonna do it, but Luka was just of his relationship weeks ago I don't think it's the best time. But when's the best time?' After debating with yourself for a while, you agreed. The girls cheer and root for you. "But how am I gonna do it?" You asked.
"Do what?"
Luka also entered the ship, back from Paris Careers Expo. Your eyes widened and turned to him. "I- uhh... We were thinking about uhm..." Luka looks at you. "W-we were talking about.." you collect your thoughts on what to say. "Writing music! Yeah! I wasn't sure on how to do it. Can you help me?" You asked, internally face palming. "Sure, when?" He asked, you looked at the girls and they signal you to go on. "Maybe now? Will you go out with me?" You suddenly uttered. "I-I mean for ice cream! To talk about it." You jumbled your words but still managed to say what you want. You could hear the girls let out a faint squeal. 'Darn, I'm not usually like this.'
"Ready when you are, (Y/n)." Luka said. "Right, let's go." You waved the girls goodbye and left the ship. "She's like Marinette with Adrien earlier, didn't expect that." Alix spoke. "At least (Y/n) got Luka to have ice cream with her." Alya responded. "Touché."
"Do you have an idea on what you're going to write?" Luka asked you, you were both at Canal Saint-Martin eating ice cream from Andre. It took you a while to answer. "I do, it's about encouragement on expressing what you feel, but I don't really know what to start." You said, somehow mixing in what your feeling right now. "Hey, don't rush about it, there's no deadline. To come up with something that's genuine and comes from what you truly feel, you need time to figure it out." He replied. "But, I have been thinking about it for a long time, yet I still don't have any progress." 'With you.' You thought the last 2 words. "It's alright, ease your mind and think about what you want to do. Collect your thoughts and calm down, be with what you'll write then you'll have something." He respond, you're deep in thought while looking at the reflection of both of you in the water. "(Y/n), your ice cream's melting. Here." He took out your handkerchief from his pocket. "Hey, you cleaned it!" You chuckled and took it from him and wiped the cone. "Yeah, I did." He stared at you with concern. "I've never seen you so troubled, (Y/n)." You looked at him, he was already looking at you.
You gave in, don't want to pretend that it's about music anymore. "The truth is, I-I..." He's staring at you, hoping for an answer and you're giving it to him. "I like you, Luka. For a long time." You finally said it, you looked at the ground avoiding his gaze while waiting for his reply. He made you look at him, "Hey, I appreciate what you feel about me, but I'm sorry I can't reciprocate your feelings. I'm still sorting out what happened between me and Marinette." He looked sad, it seems like something happened. "It would be unfair to you if I went out with you while I'm still thinking about her." He added, you can't help but feel emotional from what was happening. "Based on what you said, I still have a chance, right?" You sniffled and he took the handkerchief from your hand to wipe your forming tears. He genuinely smiled at you and that answered your question. "I will still like you no matter what, I'm not giving you up!" You declared confidently, Luka chuckled. "What's funny?" you said trying to stop your cries. "You look adorable." he cupped both of your cheeks "Hey! stop that." You laughed in between your sobs and he hugged you. "Stop hugging me, my nose is runny." You resisted his embrace but he still didn't budge.
You were running, headed to Place des Vosges. You were with Luka strolling around Paris when Juleka called you, she's at the park along with the girls. They want to know what happened between the two of you. You told Luka about them and excuse yourself. "I'll see you next time." You smiled at him, about to leave when he held your hand to stop you. You looked at him, "What is it?" He's just staring at you and then kissed your cheek. "Bye, (Y/n), I'll see you next time." "Hey! don't get my hopes up." You joked and you both chuckled.
You arrived, you spotted Marinette is with them and approached them. "Hi, (Y/n)!" Marinette said. "So, how did it go?" MylĂšne asked and the other girls focused their attention on you. "I got rejected." You smiled and they hugged you to comfort. "Did you tell Marinette?" You asked. "Yeah, we did." Alya responded. "I didn't know you have feelings for Luka." Marinette spoke. "Well, I did. Are you mad?" You replied staring at her. "Why would I?" She chuckled, "I'm glad you confessed." She added. "She'll only get mad if you like Adrien." Alya joins and all of you laughed and started talking about other topics.

Even the Losers
Chapter 2
Chapter 1
Bruce watched Lucius, or more specifically his hands, with a well concealed hostility. Â If you didnât truly know Bruce or werenât well versed at reading suppressed emotions, you could believe it was just another artificially polite expression. Â But Lucius had known Bruce since he was a child and Marinette hadnât spent years fighting an emotional terrorist for nothing. Â âI havenât seen you all night and now I find you coopting this beautiful young ladyâs time,â Bruce observed, his mouth tight.
Marinette eyed him apprehensively, subconsciously taking a half step back. Â Her whole body stiffening. Â Lucius took note of the change and moved slightly between the two of them and laughed politely. Â He wasnât sure what caused the change in demeanor but he still wanted to try to cultivate a business relationship with the young lady. Â When they got the fabrics working, they would need a designer and she was not only clearly the perfect candidate for the position, they had already been considering her before everything sheâd said during their dance. Â
âSorry, Mr. Wayne. Â I assure you I was not avoiding you in favor of a prettier face,â he chuckled. Â âAlthough Iâve been informed elusiveness seems to be a quality I exude unintentionally.â He winked at Marinette who smiled weakly at the attempt.
Bruce chuckled with him, tight and short exhales, his eyes never softening. Â âI wouldnât blame you at all. Â She certainly is lovely.â
Marinetteâs chest hollowed out, all the breath in her evaporating out of her chest as though it had never been there. Â âKind of you to say,â she rasped out just barely looking up to meet his eyes.
âJust saying the truth,â he assured her with more sincerity.  His eyes finally managed to soften as he looked at her, but immediately hardened again when he returned his gaze to Lucius.  âIâm sorry if Lucius has been keeping you captive.  I know he likes to talk and it can be hard to get him to stop, especially when heâs taken a particular interest in something⊠or someone.â  His eyes sharpened on Lucius as he spoke.  Lucius only raised his eyebrow in response, leaning back slightly as if to see Bruce a bit better.
Marinette immediately straightened back up, her eyes hardening. Â All evidence of uncertainty and unease shattering as she did. Â She had been the one to approach M. Fox. Â She had been the one to coopt his time. Â She had been the one manipulating the situation. Â And now M. Wayne was going to try to twist this on M. Fox, who had been nothing but gracious and kind. Â âI was just discussing innovation and the application process with M. Fox,â Marinette responded coldly before Lucius could. Â âHe was polite enough to entertain my questions. Â He has been quite polite and charming and professional.â
âWere you thinking of working for WE?â Bruce asks perking up slightly. Â
âYou couldnât pay me enough,â Marinette scoffed out before she could stop herself. Â She immediately mentally face palmed. Â This wasnât the time for this. Â Now was about Max, not her. Â The mission had been successful she wasnât going to blow it now by letting M. Fox see her overreactions. Â
She let out a breath and looked back up with an overly wide smile. Â âAs I mentioned to M. Fox, Iâm not really interested in technology. Â I couldnât imagine anything more boring than staring at numbers and code all day long,â she laughed in the way sheâd seen Adrien laugh at events like this, an empty, meaningless laugh meant to indicate a lack of interest in the topic rather than actual entertainment, leaning toward Lucius as she said it, hoping to pull him into the conversation and rescue her from.
âItâs not my favorite part of the day either,â Lucius smiled graciously. Â âI imagine you would still be good at it,â he assured her, âbut I canât say I blame you. I would likely react the same if faced with bolts of fabric and thread.â
Marinette smiled politely, grateful to him for the reprieve. Â âWell that sounds interesting,â Bruce interjected. Â âPerhaps we can discuss what would interest you during a dance.â He motioned toward the dancefloor and held his hand out toward her.
Marinette glanced down at the hand, a weight settling in the pit of her stomach. Â If she gave in heâd have her for the duration of the song. Â One-on-one. Â No escape without creating a scene. Â Trapped by the same societal conventions sheâd used against M. Fox. Â âSurely you must have more important guests to attend to,â she offered instead.
âI do not,â he assured her, sincerity radiating from his eyes.
Marinette opened her mouth to say yes, resigning herself to her fate when she felt a hand on her hip. Â âThere you are Mâlady. Â I lost you in the sea of people for a moment.â Â Adrien prompted her to turn slightly so he could look her in the eyes. âYou okay?â
Her shoulders, she hadnât even realized had worked their way up to almost touching her jaw, instantly relaxed. Â She gave him a relieved smile and squeezed his hand. Â âIâm good, Kitty. Â Thank you.â
âIs this your date?â Bruce inserted, eyeing him coldly, but held his hand out to him. Â âBruce Wayne.â
Adrien gave him his practiced, social smile, perfect for galas with strangers and potentially hostile associates.  âNice to meet you, sir.  This is a very nice gathering.  Very kind of you to do this for the orphans,â his tone was bordering on openly hostile but keeping to the socially acceptable side of the border. Marinette choked at the statement. She hadnât really thought about the intent of the gala since sheâd made the plan.  When sheâd made it, the purpose hadnât had any bearing.  But nowâŠ
âThank you. Â It is an important cause to my family and myself.â Â He missed the way Adrien squeezed Marinette tighter at his words. âYou mentioned talking to Mr. Fox about innovation at Wayne Enterprises. Â Perhaps you would like a tour of the building. Â I can arrange one personally for you.â
Adrien pulled his lips into a tight, sickeningly artificial smile. Â âHow very generous of you. Â Unfortunately, we wonât be in town that long. Â We are scheduled to leave town Tuesday.â
Bruce looked between the two, forcing his body to not stiffen at Adrien responding for Marinette. Â âTell me about yourself, son,â Bruce smiled stiffly, noting that he had artfully left out his name, not that Bruce didnât know it already, although the physical proximity to Marinette was unexpected.
It took almost all of Marinetteâs experience as Ladybug to keep a poker face instead of letting her jaw drop in offense. Â âWhy donât you let these young people dance, Bruce,â Lucius interrupted, detecting Marinetteâs increased discomfort. Â âAfter all, itâs cruel to make the young have to endure making conversation with the old guard like us.â Â He turned to Marinette and Adrien with a kind smile. Â âMake sure you donât miss your opportunity to dance tonight.â
Marinette smiled at him gratefully. Â âNot at all, M. Fox. Â I found our conversation very fascinating. Â Thank you very much for sharing your time with me. Â It was much appreciated. Â But I will take you up on your advice.â Â She turned to Adrien and motioned to the dancefloor. Â âShall we?â
âAlways,â Adrien smiled. Â âGentlemen.â Â He nodded to them and guided Marinette across the dancefloor, taking great care to escort her as far from them as he possibly could. Â He glanced around to make sure the men couldnât see them and pulled Marinette into a comforting, all-encompassing hug. Â âHow are you really?â
Marinette held him tightly and buried her head in his chest.  âIâll be okay.  I just⊠Thank you for the save.â  She laid her head on his chest as they swayed to the music.  Her breath slowly shifted from shaky to more steady.  She lost track of the number of songs that passed while she found her voice again.  When she could breathe normally again, she stood straight and smiled at Adrien.  âIt worked.â
âIt worked?â Adrien asked excitedly.
Marinette nodded and had to stop herself from doing an entirely inappropriate victory dance. Â âHe wants to meet Max on Monday. Â Well, me too,â she cringed slightly, not looking forward to being involved beyond what she had done already. Â âBut! But, he was floored by Maxâs invention. Like completely floored! Â And knows about Rabler now. Â He did not look happy at all about the news.â Â Her grin widened as she remembered the encounter. Â âI think Max is really going to be taken care of. Â It went so well!â she squealed.
Adrien grinned back and hugged her. Â âWe have to let Max know.â
Marinette nodded. Â âHeâll call us when heâs done. Â We just need to stay up until then.â
Adrien nodded. Â âCoffee it is then. Â Do you want to leave now or look around?â Â Marinette looked around quickly. Â By the time she looked back at Adrien, her eyes had lost their light. She looked exhausted suddenly, drained by the experience. Â Adrien gave her an understanding smile and squeeze. Â The mission was over. Â She didnât need to be in mission mode anymore, or at least not high alert. Â She just had the meeting on Monday and she was done. Now she could stop blocking any potentially interfering emotions and actually let herself feel again. Â âLetâs get out of here and find a coffee shop then. We can take it back to the hotel and watch bad movies until Max calls.â
Marinette gave him a weak smile. Â âMaybe popcorn and candy and drinks instead,â she offered. She rested her head on his shoulder. âSooooo many drinks and ice cream.â
Adrien laughed and slung his arm over her shoulder to help guide her and comfort her at the same time. Â They wound through the crowd making their way to the exit and freedom, where Marinette could finally breathe freely. Â They had almost made it to the doors when they heard someone call Adrienâs name. Â Adrien looked around and cursed under his breath. Â âHey again.â
âLeaving so soon?â Tim asked. Â He looked between the two with a concerned expression. Â It was awfully early in the night to leave already.
âYeah, I think so. Â Itâs a nice event but I think weâre ready to go home, take off the stuffy clothes, and drink,â he gave him a charming, conspiratorial smile. Nobody their age wanted to be here and they all knew it.
âOh that sounds like a brilliant plan,â the blonde woman next to Tim grinned. Â âI wish we could do that. Â But we have to at least wait until the announcement. Â And we canât drink. Â But it would help handle events like this.â Â She gave them a wide smile and held out her hand. Â âIâm Stephanie. Â Nice to meet you.â
Adrien smiled politely back. Â âAdrien. Â Hi.â
Marinette smiled civilly. Â âMarinette. Â Nice to meet you.â
Stephanieâs smile widened. Â âOh Timmy, make sure to keep this one away from Bruce. Â Black hair, blue eyes, looks beautiful but haunted. Heâll adopt her in an instant.â
Tim laughed and rolled his eyes, drawing Stephanieâs attention to him, both of them missing the way Marinette and Adrien balked and Marinetteâs entire body went rigid again. Â âBruceâs breaking that habit with todayâs announcement.â
Adrien paled slightly. Â This could go nowhere good, but it was like watching an akuma hit someone when youâre too far away to help. Â It was going to happen no matter what. Â The damage would be inestimable and all he could do was watch as it got worse and worse. Â âOh?â
âYeah, our new brother⊠or rather their new brother, Iâm not officially adopted, just unofficially the favorite child,â Steph winked at them.  Tim huffed playfully but didnât contradict her.  It was easier to just let it go.  âAnyway, the new Wayne doesnât have blue eyes. Does have black hair, is beautiful and looks haunted, so maybe itâs just the blue eyes that donât matter so much anymore.â
âNâŠnew brother?â Adrien stuttered, struggling to keep his voice even and polite.  The normal reaction to such news would be interest and happiness.  Well, they certainly had his interest.  The happiness part though⊠ He pulled Marinette tighter as he sent her a furtive look.  She was doing an admirable job of masking her response but he knew her. He knew the signs.  He knew her lips were a bit tighter than usual.  He knew her jaw was clenched harder than was normal.  He knew her breathing was harder than average.  He knew he shouldnât be able to feel her pulse from here.
âYeah!â Stephanie enthused. Â âDuke.â
âWe were supposed to wait for the announcement,â Tim chastised with no real heat behind his words. Â âBut yes. Â Thatâs what this gala is really for. Â To officially announce the adoption of Duke Thomas. Â So, yet another âpoor orphanâ joins the rest of us,â he joked. Â âI swear Bruce just canât help himself. Â He sees a kid and instantly feels the need to protect and help.â
âSo thoughtful,â Marinette rasped out, pretending like her entire chest wasnât breaking apart and disintegrating in front of them. Â âYou must all be so excited.â
Tim looked at her for a moment but before he could analyze her tone or body language, they heard someone tapping on a microphone. Â âThatâs our cue,â Stephanie squealed. Â âLooks like you might make it for the announcement after all. Â It was nice to meet you if I donât see you after.â Â Tim and Stephanie waved before making their way to the stage.
Once the two were gone, Marinetteâs eyes bulged as Timâs words reverberated in her head.  This whole thing was to introduce a new child, another new child he took in, another addition to his family, another child he wanted and brought into his life instead of throwing them out.  Her eyes darted among the family members as they all made their way up onto the stage.  All standing behind the new member, smiling at him, hugging him, eyes shining in acceptance for him.  One big happy family, not wanting for anything⊠or anyone.
Marinette didnât realize she had stopped breathing until her body forced a deep gasping breath, knocking her out of her stupor. She tore her eyes away so violently, she stumbled back, or maybe it was just that her resilience had disappeared with the words.  They should not be here.  They⊠she should never have come.  This was a stupid, terrible plan.  She had no right to intrude.  She had no right to be here⊠for this.
Her heart raced out of control. Â Her whole body started shaking. Â She couldnât breathe. Â Why couldnât she breathe now? Â But suddenly there wasnât enough air in the room. Â Why wasnât there air? Â There had been air before, hadnât there been? Â She remembers being able to breathe earlier. Â She thinks. Â Maybe she made that up. Â Maybe she hadnât been able to breathe since she stepped in the room.
She stumbled again and reached out for support, never doubting it would be there for her. Â Adrien responded instantly, bringing her into his chest and quickly guiding her out of the gala. Â He whispered comforting and reassuring words as they moved, throwing empty smiles at anyone who bothered looking their way, as though helping his drunk date home, nothing scandalous or even unusual, nothing to look twice at.
They missed the eyes searching the crowd for them and the quickly covered up frown at finding them missing.

Second Chance
For Maribat March day 12 theme second chance
Master List
Sometimes Marinette really wished Penny and Jagged hadnât adopted her. Itâs not that she didnât want to be a Rolling-Stone, no that wasnât it. In fact, she was grateful that they had saved her from the horrors that Paris now held for her. Itâs just they dragged her to stuff like this, some rich manâs gala.Â
She had slept for a full 12 hours after finishing Pennyâs dress, only to wake up to the news she was coming with them. She probably shouldâve seen it coming. Although she was hoping this would be one of the lucky cases where she didnât have to go. Despite her protests they insisted she needed to interact with other humans who werenât serving her coffee. In Jaggedâs words, âWho knows, you might make a rock n roll friend!âÂ
Now here she was, in her black and purple dress that matched Pennyâs and Jaggedâs outfits. Letting a bit of her anxiety out as she fiddled with the strap of her matching purse. Watching her parents mingle with the rich folk while she stood off to the side. Every once in a while they would cast her a âgo make a friendâ look but it never bothered her, she just needed to wait until they stopped turning to look back at her. Â
After about 10 minutes they stopped, perfect. She casually asked a waiter where the bathroom was and made her way there. Once inside she slipped off the pearl anklet that was Daizziâs miraculous, letting the kwami make her way into her purse, before pulling out a familiar nose ring. Now that Jagged and Penny were letting her do her own thing, she could go back to scaring people into not socializing with her. While she wouldâve loved to keep Daizziâs miraculous on so that it could combat Stomppâs miraculous side effects, she learned that it took too much energy to do so. And she didnât want to explain why she was so tired after the gala if she wasnât talking to anyone.Â
She schooled her features before making her way back out sending a cold look to anyone who tried to come up to her. She pulled out her phone only to see that 2 hours had passed, she still had 4 more to go. Time was moving much too slowly for her liking.Â
A clearing of the throat brought her out of her thoughts. She rolled her eyes, putting her phone back in her purse, getting ready to glare at the person who was going to try to talk to her, only to stare in shock at the green eyes that were watching her. The same ones that had bumped into her just days before. The same ones she had sworn she probably wouldnât ever see again.Â
Her mouth moved without her permission, again she blames Stompp, âYou.âÂ
He smiled or maybe it was a smirk, responding with way too much amusement, âMe.âÂ
She once again schooled her features to look bored, but sheâs pretty sure her eyes gave her away with the way he reacted, âWhat are you doing here?âÂ
Just like before it took him a moment to reply, his smirk growing just the tiniest bit, âIâm always invited to these things, Iâve never seen you before though.âÂ
âWith any luck this will be the last time you see me.â She remarked. She didnât mean to be so rude again she blames Stompp but she really hadnât expected to see him. To his credit he didnât seem deterred by her cold vibe, if anything he seemed more determined.Â
âWhy would you say that?âÂ
âThese types of things,â She waved her hand around, motioning to the room, âJust arenât my thing. My parents make it look so easy, but Iâve never been one for this kind of scene. Plus I leave Gotham in a few days.âÂ
âDesperate to get out here?âÂ
âYou could say that.âÂ
âWho are your parents?âÂ
She raised an eyebrow, âWouldnât you like to know.â If this was the game he wanted to play she would play it. Trying to find out who she was by asking about her parents, real subtle. Well Mr. Hot shot, sheâs letting Stompp take the wheel now.
âYou know, you make trying to have a conversation pretty hard.âÂ
She rolled her eyes at him, not even trying to stop them from rolling, âWho says I wanted this conversation?â It was a rhetorical question. She turned to leave only for him to grab her wrist.Â
Suddenly she was brought back to that night. The night that changed everything. Three pieces of jewelry in her hand, two brooches one ring, her earrings 2 beeps away from her transformation leaving her.Â
A pale hand holding her wrist, keeping her from running away. Green eyes and blond hair belonged to the owner of the hand.Â
It had happened too fast. One second she was getting ready to run and detransform. Then someone had stopped her, she turned around to meet hungry green eyes. She froze as she felt lips pressed onto her own. It was only the beeping of her earring that brought her back to reality. A knee to the groin, and she pushed him off of her. Letting the police deal with the trio as she fled.Â
She turned to the owner of the tan hand that was holding her back and could only register green eyes. She wouldnât stand still this time. She twisted her hand so that he was forced to let go. A knee to the stomach had him holding his gut and as she raised her arm ready to punch him was when she finally registered that this wasnât Adrien. It was just some weird stranger who was persistent in getting past her walls.Â
She could hear people talking around her and when she dared to glance around they were all staring. She forced the embarrassed blush that wanted to grace her cheeks down, she wasnât 13 anymore, she was 16 god damnit! Locking eyes with the mysterious yet persistent guy again, she ran. Ran until she found herself on a balcony, the cold air brushing her face as she gripped the railing.Â
Why did she react like that? Why did she always have to be so aggressive? Why couldnât she just let go of the past and take this damn nose ring off so she didnât have to go and do stupid shit like this? Why couldnât she just be normal and let people in?Â
Oh yeah, because she had a bunch of shitty friends that all turned on her because of a liar. The same liar turned her already neglectful parents against her. So Jagged and Penny got custody of her in order to get her out. Her parents didnât even put up a fight about it, too busy gushing about precious LILA! And now she has major trust issues despite wanting to open and trust people again. Man, she is a wreck.Â
âHey, are you out here?â The mystery guy spoke from the entrance of the balcony.Â
âNo, Iâm not.â She didnât see the point in not acknowledging him, he could probably see her from where he was standing.Â
âIâm sorry about earlier, you were obviously uncomfortable and I pushed your limit. So I really am sorry.â He apologized.Â
âYeah, sorry about kneeing you in the stomach. I thoughtâŠâ She cut herself off, she didnât need to pour her whole life story out to a stranger. He probably didnât even want to know either.Â
âItâs okay, I deserved it.â He made his way to the railing, he was a good distance away that she still had her own space, but close enough they could still talk. She relaxed a little thanks to the distance, resting her elbows on the railing. He leaned his back against the railing. They stood there in silence and Marinette decided she wouldnât mind seeing this mystery boy again. Wait she didnât even know his name.Â
It seemed like he had the same thought since he spoke up, âI donât think we ever introduced ourselves.âÂ
âWe didnât.â Damn her being so cold, she should probably take this nose ring off. So thatâs what she did, took the nose ring off and placed it in her purse. Maybe this would be good for her.Â
âWell, Iâm Damian Wayne.â He stated, holding his hand out to shake.Â
âWait, Wayne as in Bruce Wayne? As in the Ice Prince of Gotham?â She questioned, shocked.Â
âOh, so youâve heard.â He seemed a bit disappointed.Â
âYeah, but I wonât judge if you donât judge.â
He raised an eyebrow at that before she continued, âMy name is Marinette Rolling-Stone.â Now he looked surprised.Â
âYou're the elusive Diamond Stone?â He asked, disbelief made its way into his voice.Â
âThatâs what theyâre calling me now. At first it was Sapphire Stone. Guess thatâs what happens when I stay out of the media too long.â She chuckled a small smile making its way onto her face.Â
âWait, where did your nose ring go?â He looked around as if expecting it to magically appear.Â
âI took it off.âÂ
âWhy?âÂ
âWell at first I wore it to scare people off. People are scared of people that have piercings. I was thinking of getting a tattoo but Iâm too young and theyâre too permanent.âÂ
âWhy would you want to scare people off?âÂ
âI have a complicated past. Sometimes putting your trust in someone takes too much risk, I tried to avoid it altogether.â She pulled her sketchbook as she wrote something down.
âTried?âÂ
âWhy do you think Iâm talking to you?â She tore the paper out.
âYou're putting your trust in me?âÂ
âNo.â She quickly answered, âBut maybe one day.â She handed him the paper and left.Â
As she walked away she released a breath she didnât even realize she was holding. Maybe giving people a second chance wouldnât be such a bad thing. But right now she just needed to find her parents so she could head home.Â
-
Damian hated galas. He hated having to talk to the stuck-up rich folk who thought they were better than everyone just because of their wealth. The girls who would try and flirt with him in order to gain his last name. And their parents who tried to push them together.Â
Yes, he definitely hated galas. What made this worse was that his family wouldnât stop teasing him about the girl who he knocked over that one time. Threatening bodily harm did nothing but amp up the teasing. It was times like this where he truly wished there was a not a no kill rule. If only to give Jason Todd some revenge.Â
2 hours into the gala and he was already done. 4 girls had already tried to drape themselves over him and it took all his self-control not to hurt them. He was ready to storm out of this gala when he caught sight of her.Â
The mystery girl he had bumped into days before. She was here, at a Wayne gala. Her outfit certainly looked the part of a rich socialite, She wore a long halter dress that flared out at the waist. It started out black at her neck before turning purple at the waist. The bottom of the dress had black music notes dancing across and she had a matching black and purple purse hanging off her shoulder.Â
Her hair was down and she seemed to be wearing a little bit of makeup. The only reason he was able to tell it was her was because of the black nose ring that stood out against her fancy look. It looked so out of place compared to everything else.Â
He watched as a man tried to approach her only to receive the same glare he had gotten days before, quickly moving on to someone else. Seems like he wasnât the only one who didnât want to be here.Â
He made his way over to her, perhaps to give himself a second chance at a new impression. She proceeded to pull out her phone and look at something before deflating the tiniest bit.Â
He cleared his throat to grab her attention, she looked at him with the same glare once again before her eyes took on a look of shock.Â
âYou.â She seemed surprised that she had stated this as well.Â
He couldnât help the smirk that spread on his face, she remembered him and still had the same spunky attitude, âMe.âÂ
Her features took on a look of boredom, but her eyes looked only curious yet cautious, âWhat are you doing here?âÂ
The fact that she didnât recognize him as a Wayne was surprising. He thought that she was only in a hurry before thatâs why she didnât register it was him, but now he knew she truly didnât know it was him. Perhaps he could use this to his advantage. âIâm always invited to these things, Iâve never seen you before though.âÂ
âWith any luck this will be the last time you see me.â She said it with such confidence he felt inclined to believe. It was strange. He seemed to be the last person she wanted to talk to and yet he still wanted to talk to her. He didnât want her to leave. So the next best thing is to get answers.
âWhy would you say that?âÂ
âThese types of things,â She waved her hand around to motion to the room, âJust arenât my thing. My parents make it look so easy, but Iâve never been one for this kind of scene. Plus I leave Gotham in a few days.âÂ
Well that sucked for him. âDesperate to get out here?âÂ
âYou could say that.âÂ
âWho are your parents?â Maybe he could try to get his father to arrange a meeting with them.
She raised an eyebrow, âWouldnât you like to know.â Nevermind.Â
âYou know, you make trying to have a conversation pretty hard.â He didnât mean to say that, that was rude.Â
She rolled her eyes at him, it looked like he was meant to see that, âWho says I wanted this conversation?â She turned to leave, but he grabbed her wrist. He didnât want her to go just yet. He felt her freeze then tense when he touched her, her breathing became a little more forced, and she seemed to shake a little.Â
Suddenly she twisted out of his grip and kneed him in the stomach. She raised her arm and looked ready to punch him. Her eyes looked far and distant and afraid. They seemed to refocus on him as she dropped her arm and glanced around the room. Of course, people were talking about them.
She locked eyes with him once more before running. He ran after her before his path was blocked off by Dick Grayson. âDamian what-â He didnât get to finish that question as he dashed passed him, determined not to lose the one girl who wasnât a stuck up brat.Â
He thought he had lost her but then he heard someone taking deep breaths from out on one of the balconies. He was about to go up to her, but from the way she reacted to his sudden hold on her arm earlier, it was probably best to give a warning. âHey are you out here?âÂ
He walked out onto the balcony. âNo, Iâm not.â She likely didnât want to talk to him.Â
âIâm sorry about earlier, you were obviously uncomfortable and I pushed your limit. So I really am sorry.â He apologized. Which was so unlike him because here Damian Wayne was apologizing to a stranger. The weird things she made him do.Â
âYeah, sorry about kneeing you in the stomach. I thoughtâŠâ She cut herself off, it looked like she wanted to say more but wasnât going to.Â
âItâs okay, I deserved it.â He walked over to the railing, making sure he was a good distance away that she had her own space, but close enough so they could still talk. She seemed to relax a little thanks to the distance, resting her elbows on the railing. He leaned his back against the railing. He quite liked the silence, her company was nice. Oh god he didnât even know her name.
âI donât think we ever introduced ourselves.âÂ
âWe didnât.â She stated in what he was pretty sure was a cold tone. Maybe she wanted to stay mysterious, so he would just introduce himself.Â
âWell, Iâm Damian Wayne.â He held his hand out to shake.Â
âWait, Wayne as in Bruce Wayne? As in the Ice Prince of Gotham?â So she recognizes the name, not the face. Great.
âOh, so youâve heard.âÂ
âYeah, but I wonât judge if you donât judge.â Why would he judge her?
He raised an eyebrow at her before she continued, âMy name is Marinette Rolling-Stone.âÂ
âYou're the elusive Diamond Stone?â He asked, disbelief accidentally made its way into his voice. He couldnât help it. She was claiming to be the adoptive daughter of famous Jagged and Penny Rolling-Stone. The girl that made Jaggedâs stage outfits from scratch and managed to get the ferocious Fang, Jaggedâs pet crocodile, to love her. The media could only ever get a hold of the back of her head, but those that had talked with her said she shined as bright as a diamond. Hence the nickname, Diamond Stone.
âThatâs what theyâre calling me now. At first it was Sapphire Stone. Guess thatâs what happens when I stay out of the media too long.â She chuckled, a small smile had made its way onto her face. Sapphire Stone, he hadnât heard of that nickname but he could always do some stalking research. Thatâs when he noticed.Â
âWait, where did your nose ring go?â He looked around trying to see if it had fallen off her face and she hadnât noticed.
âI took it off.âÂ
âWhy?â He was truly baffled.Â
âWell at first I wore it to scare people off. People are scared of people that have piercings. I was thinking of getting a tattoo but Iâm too young and theyâre too permanent.âÂ
âWhy would you want to scare people off?â That seems like something he would do.
âI have a complicated past. Sometimes putting your trust in someone takes too much risk, I tried to avoid it altogether.â She pulled out what looked like a sketchbook as she wrote something down. Wait what did she mean by âcomplicated past.â
âTried?âÂ
âWhy do you think Iâm talking to you?â She tore the paper out of the sketchbook.
âYou're putting your trust in me?â He asked, she didnât seem like the type to trust people quickly.
âNo.â She quickly answered, he thought so, âBut maybe one day.â She handed him the paper and left. As he looked down at it he saw it was her number. There was a message attached below âMy number. Maybe we can meet up somewhere before I leave.â He certainly wanted to take that opportunity.Â
He tucked the paper into his pocket and made his way back to the gala only to be met with his annoying family. By the curious look in their eyes they wanted to know what just happened. This was not going to be fun to explain.Â
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi, I have not disappeared, just didnât want to write for prompts 8-11. I was honestly going to do prompt 8 but then stuff came up and I didnât have the time to write. I was also planning to write something for tomorrowâs prompt but then I found out I have something I need to do tomorrow so nothing for tomorrow either. Because I had a specific thing I wanted to write for tomorrow Iâm changing it to fit day 14âČs prompt. Which means itâs not going to be mega angsty like I originally thought was gonna be 14. You have escaped mega angst and now it will only be medium angst.Â
On another note that was a bitch to write and edit. And the fact I had originally planned to write more for it baffles me. I feel like I left it kind of open ended so if you want a part 3 to what I have going on here go ahead and tell me. Iâm still trying to decide if I should do a part 3 yet. For those who are confused today was a part 2 to day 6âČs prompt, miraculous side effects. Go to my master list and you can find it.Â
You can also see on my master list that there are days that are crossed off, which means I wonât be doing those days. I canât do every single day if I want to still get decent grades. Why I skipped days 8-11. Sorry for that long explanation/rant. Also sorry for posting so late again. I do these things all the way to the last minute. Letâs see if I can break that habit throughout the month. Probably not but a girl can hope. Anyways hope you enjoyed.Â

Moving Forward â Chapter 7
Chapter Seven
Revealed... (pt. 2)
âââââ
"Enchanttréx, I am Hawkmoth. You've been betrayed by the person your loved one, I'm giving you the power to expose any secrets that were chosen to be hidden away from the world. In return, you will bring me ladybug and Chat Noir's Miraculous. Do we have a deal?"
"Yes, Hawkmoth."
The purple substance covered the woman in a wedding dress, and when it was gone it left a woman, who has an intricate gold flower-themed headpiece, long black hair that reaches up to her mid-back, a flowy white to black gradient dress, gold strapped heels, white laced gloves that reach up to her forearm and a veil in front of her face.
"It's time to let yourself free from your secrets!" Enchanttréx exclaimed making the nearby Parisians run away in fear and alerting the heroes.
â previous chapter... â
It took quite a while for Ladybug to get to the scene. People were shocked to see Ladybug with a new suit design. Instead of her previous red skintight jumpsuit with black spots. It was changed to a much more detailed suit.
She still wears a skintight jumpsuit but now she had two-inched heeled thigh-high black boots, solid black colour on her waist with inverted red spots instead of black, solid black gloves and her top looks armoured, her collar turns to swan-necked design still black in colour with red lining. Her hair is now tied in a ponytail that reaches up to her mid-back with two red and black ribbons sticking out of the ponytail acting as the antennas, her mask stayed the same.
Ladybug was worried about how to defeat her since she's alone and has no one to trust with the cat miraculous.
Meanwhile, inside the Agreste Mansion, Adrien was frantically searching around his room for his kwami, he kept looking back to his TV watching Ladybug fight the Akuma alone.
"Plagg! Where are you?!"
He didn't notice Ladybug capturing the villain with her yo-yo and snatching her headpiece with the veil attached and breaking it, freeing the Akuma. She captured it then cleansed it and used her miraculous cure to fix everything, reverting the villain to her civilian self in her wedding dress outfit.
She spent a good twenty minutes defeating the villain alone.
The reporters were pushing each other towards Ladybug to get an interview.
"Ladybug! What's with the new outfit? And where is Chat Noir?" Nadja Chamack asked.
Ladybug was about to swing her yo-yo to leave but was bombarded with that question. She sighed and took notice that she only had three minutes before she detransformed.
"The suit is just an outfit change, no need to worry about it. About Chat Noir... He has been relinquished of his miraculous, I have found out about his misdeeds in his civilian life and how he acted during the battles, I had no choice but to take his miraculous for he became unworthy of wielding it anymore. I need to go, I'm about to detransform." She said before waving and finally swinging away.
Adrien was staring at the TV before looking at his hand with the silver ring. He lost his miraculous. He can no longer be Chat Noir.
âââââ
"Hey, that's a good record!" She said after she had swung to her balcony then detransformed once she stepped inside her bedroom. The kwamis are patiently waiting for her while they eat food.
"He probably heard the news by now..." Marinette mumbled.
"Do you regret it? Taking the miraculous back?" Wayzz asked.
Marinette was in a daze for a moment thinking back to the good memories of them. The day they became heroes, how he supported her, protecting her from harm, their playful banter, everything. But even if she returns the miraculous to him, she can't trust him again. Not now, at the very least.
"No... I have a duty to Paris as Ladybug, but it is also my duty as Guardian to make sure that no miraculous will be used for evil."
Wayzz was pleased. When he first found out that his previous Master was planning to pass to a teenager the Guardianship of the Chinese Miracle Box, he was worried. It will be a huge responsibility for a teenager especially someone who has quite a future to reach, but Marinette has proved him wrong.
Marinette was busy sewing Clara Nightingale's commission not noticing that it was nearing dinner time. Allegra kept glancing at their dormmate's closed door, wondering if Marinette didn't like them, but it was easily dismissed since they have spent quite a while together, thinking that maybe the girl was just busy.
"Hey, Al. Is Marinette still in her room? Dinner's almost ready." Allan said.
He was mostly the cook since it became his habit to always cook with his mother. He had cooked them a lot of meals and sometimes experiments with recipes, but it always turns out good. Claude was preparing the dinner table and FĂ©lix was busy reading a book while sitting on a one-seater couch in the living room.Â
"She's been in there for quite a while, she might have the soundproof on," Allegra said.
"She might have a commission she's doing." FĂ©lix interrupted. Feeling all eyes turn on him.
"How do you know that?" Claude asked in a teasing voice.
"I looked her up to see if she has any social media accounts, I found out she's an aspiring designer with quite the accomplishments."Â
The trio was shocked. Allegra was immediately on her phone and searching her dormmate's name on the internet. She was shocked to see her name attached to a famous singer, rockstar, and even a fashion critique!
"Well, try and call her again, Dinner's ready," Allan announced.
Allegra was about to go when FĂ©lix beat her to it. She was shocked once again that their resident snob roommate is showing quite the attention to Marinette but she just shrugged it off. FĂ©lix stood in front of her door for a minute or two before he knocked.
"Marinette?" Felix called.
Inside, the girl didn't hear the call, but the kwamis did. They flew towards her to inform her that someone is calling her from outside her room. That was when she noticed the time. But it was too late...
The moment she placed down the dress she's embroidering neither her nor the kwamis that was near her, heard her unlocked door open.
When Marinette, whirled around she then froze, staring with wide eyes towards the blonde who was staring at her as well with his hand on her door's doorknob.
The Kwamis were staring at the two and in shame. Plagg was in the middle of swallowing a Camembert wedge then stopped and stared at the guy on the door, Tikki was nibbling her cookie but then paused.
"Uhm... I can explain...? They're... dolls...?" Marinette nervously said.
FĂ©lix blinked at her twice before answering, "Dolls? Dolls that are floating and... apparently can eat on their own..."
Marinette bit her bottom lip before breathing in hard. She grabbed Félix's hand then closed the door and made sure it is locked.
"Don't tell me..." Felix started.
Marinette avoided his gaze, "Then... I won't tell you." She said before giving him a sheepish smile.
FĂ©lix can only stare at her in bewilderment. His new dormmate, not only an aspiring designer who was done a lot of commissions for famous people, but is also someone important based on the number of the 'dolls' near her.
"Please, FĂ©lix... you can't tell anyone!" Marinette pleaded.
"What exactly are they? And how come there are so many of them?" FĂ©lix asked.
"... They're kwamis. They are the ones who give powers to Paris' superheroes..." Marietta hesitantly answered.
"And they are so many because... They are under my protection now..." She added.
He stared at her before looking at the dollsâ kwamis that are still staring at them. And then looked back at her pleading face, he then also remembered the news of Ladybug relinquishing Chat Noir's miraculous, meaning that she's alone in the battlefield, she's alone against Hawkmoth.
"You're Ladybug... Paris' remaining hero." He said in conclusion only to have it confirmed by her when she looked away to try and avoid his gaze.
"Marinette... what you need is a team. A support team, base on your announcement earlier, you are alone against Hawkmoth. For now... think about it, if you need help, we're here to help. Let's go, dinner's ready." He said before opening her door and gestured for her to go with him to the dining area.
Marinette stared for a second before following him outside of the room, leaving the kwamis inside her bedroom.
"Oopsie...?" Trixx said nervously.
Plagg continued to eat his cheese before saying anything, "Well, the cat's out of the bag."
Some of the kwamis laughed at Plagg's statement, while Tikki looked at him with a deadpanned expression. "This is worrisome! Her secret's exposed!" She said.
"Tikki, calm down. This could be helpful to the Guardian. She could gain a new set of temporary heroes." Wayzz said.
âââââ
Meanwhile, a seething brunette is pacing back and forth in her room. She cursed Ladybug in Italian for almost ruining her then cursed her in french!
Earlier in the day, Lila, Rose, Juleka and Alix were together getting ice cream from André, when Enchanttréx came across them and hits her with the Akuma's powers. Lila started spewing out the truths while the rest of the girls are gaping at her.
She couldn't stop talking. She spewed out how she threatened Marinette in the bathroom, how she got 'injured' after being 'pushed' by Marinette, her thoughts about the class like how stupid they were, and many more. From her peripheral vision, she saw Ladybug stopped for a moment and glanced at them before swinging away.
Rose was mortified by what she heard.
Juleka was mumbling a lot and glaring at Lila. They didn't even notice her opening her phone and started recording the conversation, not even Lila noticed her.
Alix's angry expression was evident, she openly glared at the Italian brunette.
After a few minutes, the cure was cast, and Lila was trying to fix the situation but the other girls backed away from her and started walking away. Lila stood there for a while before running to their apartment and here she was now.
"That damn bug!" Lila shouted.
Rose and Juleka are currently on the Couffaine Houseboatâ The Liberty. Juleka was comforting Rose whose crying a river on her shoulder while keeping an eye for any Akuma coming near. She tried to calm down the blonde, but Rose won't listen. Due to Lila's confession, it was clear that their previous findings were... real.
"Please, Rose... Calm down for a moment..." Juleka pleaded.
She then noticed her brother leaning on the doorway of his and her cabin. Luka Couffaine was starting at the scene in front of him. Deep inside, he was disappointed by his baby sister's choices. Instead of letting her other friends know, she hid it. He doesn't know why Juleka did it, he wanted to trust the girl's decisions, but Luka didn't know if it was the right thing to do.
"... What happened?" He asked, even though he might already have the answer.
Juleka stared at his brother's eyes before answering.
"We made a mistake..." She mumbled.
"She was right... That Lila was a liar, an Akuma happebed earlier, and Lila startes spewing a bunch of things... But..." Juleka added.
"No," Luka refuted.
"You said it yourself, Jules. You became aware of the situation, that someone in your friend group is a liar. Marinette only did what she was supposed to do, she tried to warn you all but only to be dismissed. You can't blame anyone else, Jules. You were warned by a friend, but you chose to go with everyone else and dismissed her claims. Then soon you knew about it, but didn't tell the others. You can't blame Lila here, you were the ones who believe her without any proof. You messed up. That's what happened. And I don't even know if you can still fix your mess..." He added.
Juleka could only drop her head lower due to shame. Rose who was listening to the conversation of the siblings, couldn't stop the aching part in her heart. Both of them know. They were at fault. Not Marinette, not Lila, but for them. They messed up, and by the time they realized their mistake, things might have been too late already.
Alix was back at her house, starting at a rolled-up banner in the corner of her room. A banner made by Marinette. She couldn't believe herself, if not because of that day's Akuma who knows when will they find out.
She pulled out the pocket watch given to her. In her head, she wished that she could turn back time, back to when Marinette was their friend and was warning them about Lila. She wished that she had the Rabbit Miraculous in her hands but she also knows that is a selfish thing to do.
Alix made a mistake. She doesn't know how to solve it. She didn't even know if she could even apologize for her mistake. For once, she desperately wishes that Bunnyx will appear and tell her about the future.
All three girls know that next school morning will be different from what they're used to... And it may not be the same ever again.
âââââ
The next morning came, Alix, Juleka and Rose were quite surprised that Lila hasn't arrived earlier than them. Alix immediately went to Kim and Max and explained what happened. Everyone could see that the trio that has two troublemakers is in a serious conversation, they could see Max typing furiously on his phone.
Juleka and Rose, however, went to a small group of their classmates. That group consists of Ivan, Mylene, Nathaniel, and surprisingly Sabrina.
But they were more surprised. Sabrina was telling the other three that Lila Rossi is a liar, but due to her reputation that is tied mostly to Chloé Bourgeois, people find it hard to believe. But when Juleka and Rose confirmed it, they were shocked, to say the least. Finding out that a classmate of yours enjoys toying with you to make themselves look popular can put a negative taste in your mouth. They didn't know that Nino arrived, they only noticed when Ivan saw Nino and his left hand raised, looks like to wave to someone, but frozen in his spot.
"... Nino...?" Mylene cautiously asked.
Instead of answering, he pulled out his phone and continued typing. They thought he'll text his girlfriend, but they saw him searching on the internet. Adrian saw his best friend and immediately went up to him, but was surprised at what he was doing.
"What's going on?" He asks.
"Finding out that one of our classmates is a pathological liar..." Rose answered.
Adrian only tilted his head. Juleka who was now being more observant saw his reaction. He wasn't surprised nor agitated that they were being fooled. As if he knows already.
"... Adrien?" Juleka called.
They all looked at her even though he only called the blonde boy. He answered why and looked at her curiously.
"... You knew... Didn't you?" Juleka boldly asked.
Adrian stilled. He started at the goth girl and avoided her eyes. The others saw it and slowly backed away from him.
Adrian looked at Nino, his eyes were pleading him to stay, but Nino shooked his head.
"You knew... Why didn't you say anything?! Why didn't you tell me?!" Nino whispered harshly instead of screaming to avoid making a scene.
Nino looked back to every interaction they had especially when Lila is the topic and when they are blaming Marinette for bullying the new student. Now he understands why Adrien was so quiet, why he was looking at the ravenette then soon avoided the girl's gaze. He looked at the blonde boy in front of him and thought to himself that he doesn't know this person in front of him anymore.
"Marinette knew. She knew that you knew... That's why she was looking at you every time! I thought she's just trying to plead that she's innocent but actually, she's pleading to you to say the truth!" Nino mumbled.
The others stared at Adrien for a moment before looking away, either in shame when they heard Marinette's name or in anger and don't want to do anything stupid. They all slowly left leaving a stunned Adrien and a silent Sabrina. She looked at him and stared. Soon she left as well, while she was walking she was texting Chloé of what happened and about Adrien's knowledge of the situation long ago. Chloé was furious, she thought at least the boy will have the decency to tell a friend or her but he kept it a secret and it led up to this.
Adrien's phone pinged, he pulled it out and was shocked to see what message was sent to him.
Chloé:  I don't know you anymore, Adrien. You knew but said nothing to anyone, not even to me. What kind of friend even are you?
Adrien heard the bell, and reluctantly dragged himself towards his classroom, he saw Nino seating next to his desk, but when he sat down the DJ didn't acknowledge his presence like before. Adrien looked to his right and saw Chloé frowning and ignoring him as well. He thought back to Chloé's last sentence in her message.
She was right. He knew from the very beginning, but he didn't side with the victim, instead, he sided with the bully. What kind of friend even was he? He didn't know either.

Part 4
Marinette: I will not leave you
Marinette: Until I believe you
Marinette: she could answer
Marinette: these lines were for the play, right?
Marinette: though next time you need to warn me
Marinette: âcause at first i read them as addressed to me
Marinette: and wow
Marinette: u poets r dangerous people
Marinette: i can accidentally fall in love with u like that
Coz: i think we both might be in such danger
Coz: anyway
Coz: there is a rhythmic mistake in ur lines
Coz: I will never leave you
Coz: Until I believe you
Coz: now itâs better
Marinette: damn u r good!
Marinette: i must remember to bring Adrien his favorite macaroni for this!
Marinette: and the lines r amazing
Marinette: she would just melt in place
Coz: what about when she knows who hides behind the mask?
Marinette: i mean
Marinette: if they really love each other
Marinette: shouldnât their love overcome all barriers somehow?
Marinette: though i wouldnât want to be in her place
Marinette: i have enough drama in my life
Coz: but now that u can turn ur bad luck into good luck
Coz: nothing can be really hard for u
Marinette: u r right
Marinette: i was a little confused when so much work fell on me with this theater
Marinette: but because of it i happened to meet u
Marinette: and today i even managed to feel a little how it would be to be the heroine of this story
Marinette: because u sent these poems so unexpectedly
Marinette: and before i realized that it wasnât for me, i had a moment to feel
Marinette: so anyway
Marinette: ummm
Marinette: i know itâs getting late
Marinette: and that itâs a school night
Marinette: and that yesterday we talked on the phone until midnight
Marinette: butâŠ
Reading these messages, Felix felt the warmth spreading in his chest in anticipation, because he knew exactly what she was talking about.
Coz: yes
Coz: i want to hear ur voice too
Marinette: u read my mind
âI hope it wonât become a bad habit.â Marinette said in a quiet voice as she answered his call. âBut it was just too tempting.â She sighed slowly. âI mean... Even before you startled me with those lines tonight, I was kind of processing our conversation all day. A lot of what we discussed yesterday touched me deeply and I wanted to hear you again. You know, to make sure youâre real? That you really exist.â
âI guess I can consider myself real.â Felix said softly, realizing how her words are close to what he himself felt. âBut what if Iâm not what you expect me to be?â
âNot what? A perfect stranger who is well versed in life, has a subtle feeling and can convey these feelings in an amazing way through words?â Marinetteâs voice smiled. âHow can you not be one of these?â
âFor example we might know each other.â Felix said and swallowed.
âIt sounds almost like the story from the play.â Marinette laughed quietly. âNow you just have to say that in real life we hate each other.â
Was this the right time to stop? Was it the right moment to âdestroy the magic of their feelingsâ?
âWhat if we do?â He asked.
âItâs hardly possible.â Marinette replied. âI donât hate anyone in my âreal lifeâ â assuming this part of it isnât real.â She was silent for a moment. âWell, maybe there are a couple of people whom I strongly dislike, but only for the serious things that they have done. And you canât be any of them.â
Felix was silent. Because what could he say to that? I am actually one of them? And then what?
Damn Adrien was right!
Marinette somehow unobtrusively made her way through the wall that Felix erected around him, and instantly melted his cold heartâŠ
His heart! All the trouble in his life was because of that stupid pile of flesh beating in his chest!
Felix sighed.
He closed his eyes and leaned back on the pillow on his bed.
âIf the hate part doesnât match, what about the rest of the story?â He asked.
Marinette sighed into the phone.
âWhat can I say,â she replied. âToday, when I read these lines, I imagined it so vividly that if I hadnât come to my senses in time and realized that they were not addressed to me, but only part of a theatrical production, you would risk getting a love-strike admirer.â
Felix swallowed.
âI cannot claim that these lines were written for the theatrical production.â He admitted.
Felix heard her take a sharp breath and there was silence on the phone for a while.
âWellâŠâ Marinette said finally and swallowed. âI canât claim that my answer was entirely on behalf of the heroine.â She added.
Felix felt his heart skip a beat as he unconsciously pictured Marinette beside him.
How badly he wanted to kiss her now!
This desire merged both his own feelings, awakened by this girl, and the fact that she had just practically admitted that she was falling in love with him...
This thought passed through his mind like a sobering slap in the face.
She was talking about someone else. About a person who doesnât exist. Or rather, he exists, and this is him, Felix! But there is another side to him that Marinette hates and because of which she will not be able to accept either his feelings or her own once she learns the truth!
âItâs the first time I feel like this.â Marinette said quietly after a long silence. âWhen you imagine kissing someoneâs lips, and you never even met.â
Felix bit his lower lip painfully.
Damn it!
Damn Adrien with his negligence! Damn theatrical production that so dramatically intertwined in his life! Damn poems that carved a secret path for her in his heart!
And damn it his heart, which didnât belong to him, but decided for whom it beats in his chest.

All You Had to Do Was Stay (Post Reveal/ Pre Relationship) (3/4)
Summary:
Three years ago, Marinette revealed her identity to him. Three years ago, he promised to wait in a hotel room for her. Three years ago, she opened the door to find it empty.
Now she's expected to play nice with him, since she's the maid of honor and he's unfortunately the best man. But old habits die hard, and old feelings die harder.
"This is a wedding, not a death march, Marinette."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was going well.
Or, at least as well as a combination Bachelor and Bachelorette party planned entirely via awkward emails could go.
Which could be attributed solely to her and her thousands of schedules and planners, along with the fact that she checked the weather almost religiously and the tide predictions. Adrien just bankrolled most of the thing, which worked well enough seeing as he was the head of a multi-billion-dollar fashion house and she was an up-and-coming designer with an Etsy shop focusing on affordable fashion for normal people. Sure, he insisted on a few things, such as not using the Couffaineâs houseboat (Heâd actually tried to argue against a boat entirely) or serving shots with Kim and Alix finally reuniting at this partyâBut most of it could be attributed to her.
She was pretty sure that was him trying to please her, to play nice after that disastrous night outside the bakery. He was avoiding her as much as possible, and any time he was faced with her he resolved the tension by agreeing to her as much as possible.
He was capable of learning, she supposed.
Marinette stood to the side of the bar as the boat they road on bobbed upwards and downwards, a hand braced on the counter and a glass of water that had she poured into a wineglass in the other. She hadnât admitted to anyone, but she had a habit of getting seasick. The dim lighting of the fairy lights twinkling overhead combined with the loud pounding of music did a good job of hiding that.
She gave a small, weak smile as she looked out to her friends on the dance floor, some of them being people who she hadnât seen for far longer than Adrien. Kim and Alix were locked in an exaggerated slow dance that had the two cackling, Juleka and Rose had stolen away to a corner, and Sabrina was excitedly explaining her business as a personal assistant to anyone who would listen. Itâd been a long time since sheâd seen them all, and it made her sentimental. She rarely saw anyone outside of Alya and Nino now.
âMakes you nostalgic, huh?â A deep, familiar voice asked her, obviously having slid in beside her at the bar at some point.
The side of her mouth tugged harder, and that nauseous feeling in her stomach momentarily left her. She let her blue eyes drift over, practically beaming as she took him in. âLuka Couffaine,â she said. A part of her wondered if he would come.
His long, shaggy blue hair and sharp eyes were now the highlight of the evening. Or almost the highlight. âMarinette,â he said, âfancy meeting you here.â
âOh yes,â Marinette agreed, âitâs shocking for the maid of honor to be at the Bachelorette party.â
âWell, when sheâs got a problem with the best man,â Luka began.
Marinette shot him a look. âBe quiet, someone could hear you.â
âI think everyone would have to be blind not to know,â Luka said, leaning against the bar beside her. She knew where he was looking, who he was watching. Yet, despite that, he said, âa part of me always hoped it would be us out there. Doing all of this.â
Her smile fell. âBut youâre happy now?â
âImmensely,â he confirmed, and one look at his face reaffirmed that. He was still watching, still taking it all in. If her eyes traveled to the same place, she could do it too. She could look at Adrien Agreste and wonder how everything got so utterly awful. âI knew it wouldnât be us, Marinette. We werenât those type of people.â
âThe type of people to get married?â
âThe type of people to fit together without any gaps,â he explained. âNo room for concern, no regrets.â
She sighed. There was more to it, of course. There was so much more to everything, like the fact that she could never do it, never give herself completely to Luka. She was always waiting, lingering in hallways at the slightest flash of the right shade of blond, and hearing familiar laughter in the silence.
She loved Luka, but she was always wanting. She needed Chat, she needed Adrien, she needed whatever form of him he would give herâ
âYou still love him, donât you?â Luka asked. It was a stupid question. Sheâd seen Adrien six times since he came back, and half of those moments were in passing. Any rational person would say no, only crazy romantics would say yes.
So, she stayed silent.
âI want you to be happy,â Luka said finally, and it was a bucket of cold water poured on her. A reminder of reality, of where she was now, and a rush of that seasickness back to her gut. But when he said it, there was that hint of leftover desire, that underlying subtext that there was a hole in his heart, and it would always be there for her.
And the cold understanding that she never made a groove in her heart for him.
She turned to look at him, only to find him gone.
And with that came sickness.
Awful, churning sickness. A vile wave of nausea that assaulted her stomach. The boat lurched, and with it, so did she.
My god, she was going to die.
Marinette Dupain Cheng, beloved daughter and friend. Died of seasickness because of her own poor choices while planning a party to celebrate her friendsâ upcoming wedding.
She threw her head back with another large wave, her eyes watering as she fought the overwhelming urge to die. Lila Rossi was at the party, slithering onto the guest list with a perfectly timed apology to Alya about an awful Instagram post. If Marinette turned any greener she was sure sheâd be on Rossiâs snapchat story, paired with a caption questioning why exactly the poor girl was so sick. Another pregnancy rumor.
She grimaced at the thought and nearly fell to her knees as another wave jostled her. Luckily, a hand caught her before she could fall, the warmth of a thick blazer spread across her shoulders and distracted her momentarily.
âAnd this,â said a voice as she was hauled back onto her feet, âis why I argued against the boat.â
She turned both quickly and unsteadily, catching a mixture of blond and green before, unfortunately, practically falling against it.
She could have done worse.
She could have done much worse.
Such as vomiting on his Burberry jacket or ruining his Chanel shoes.
Adrienâs arms caught her easily, hooking underneath her armpits and hauling her upwards once more. âIâd make a joke about you falling for me, but all things considered⊠Iâd say youâre sick of me.â
Badum tss.
Marinette groaned, resting her forehead against his chest only because it was the main thing keeping the rest of the world from overwhelming her. âWere your jokes always this stupid?â
âThings seem a lot funnier when youâre madly in love,â he said, and she made sure to fire back a glare in response. âThatâs good,â he said with an air of authority when she looked at him, âeyes on me, focus on the conversation instead of the waves.â
âCan I have a different conversation partner?â she fired back.
He rolled his eyes, shaking his head at her as he kept a hand braced on her back, the other braced on her shoulder to keep her upright. âDo you want someone else to know youâre sick?â He asked, âbecause I guarantee Alya and Nino will hear.â
Ugh.
âWeâre going to get you inside,â Adrien decided, evidently having spotted a door back into the cabin.
âAnd then?â She asked, she didnât see how that would help.
âAnd then Iâll stay by you in case it all goes south, and you can play YouTube videos on my phone to distract you for another hour or two until Alya goes looking for you. Then youâll take some selfies, come back, and weâll wash, rinse, and repeat.â
Marinette wrinkled her nose. âI donât trust you to stay anywhere, Agreste.â
He flinched. âOkay, fair, but⊠Iâm your only option here so,â he tilted his head at her, looking down as he withdrew his hand from her waist only to offer it to her again. âEither you take my hand and we go, or I leave you here at the mercy of the Seine, which seems to be in quite the mood today.â
He had a point.
âFine,â she said, slapping her hand into his. âIâll sit next to you, but I will not talk to you. Donât expect a miraculous turn around.â
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
âI hope you know that nearly every YouTube recommendation of yours being highlight reels of Ladybug and Chat Noir is not endearing,â Marinette informed Adrien, âit makes you look self-obsessed.â
âItâs not every YouTube recommendation,â Adrien scoffed, moving beside her to point at his screen. âSee? Anime.â
âTop ten anime waifus?â Marinette read out, shooting him a look.
âYou know thatâs not what it says,â he responded, yet she couldnât help but note the way that he took a second look as if making sure.
They were on the ground in the cabin of the boat, nearest the hallway where the kitchens and bathroom were. Adrien was the one to declare that the safest, a place where she could get water if needed, and if worse cameâŠ
âWhen will this finally pass,â Marinette asked yet again as she let herself fall onto her back, sheâd repeated the question with every single video finished, but her impatience continued to grow.
And he repeated the same answer, âin four hours when the boat finally docks and we end up on dry land.â
Four hours.
âYou were never good in the water,â he said, âand this is coming from the guy dressed like a cat.â
She glared, slapping his thigh. âWhen this boat lands, the truce ends.â
His smile faltered at that, and he let himself sink down onto the ground beside her, his eyes trained towards the ceiling.
This had a time limit; all of this had a time limit. Even she had almost forgotten that. Because eventually the wedding would end, eventually there would be no more forced interactions, eventually he would go home. Eventually she would go back to her life and wonder the same damn question.
âWhy werenât you there that night?â There was no gracefulness to how it was presented, it merely clattered from her like a knife falling from a kitchen table. It was heavy and loaded, the kind of question that you swallowed down every time you saw someone, not the type that you lobbed out when you were laying side by side and wishing it had been like this so many other times.
She could feel his eyes on her.
âIâŠâ he began, but whatever he meant to say was a false start. He swallowed the letter and tried again. âI donâtâŠâ Know? Care? Want to talk about this?
Why did she care anymore?
What would it change?
Nothing.
âI was scared,â he said finally.
âOkay,â she said.
And that was that. That should have been that. That should have been her hint, her great sign.
âWhy?â
And with that single word he rose to his forearms, looking over at her. He was in her field of vision, where she couldnât ignore him. A hint of pink graced the edge of his green eyes, but his lips were set in an almost determined look, and she wondered if he would stumble over his words again.
âMy father was just arrested for being Hawk Moth, my mother was found in my basement, I lost the only home I ever knew to police investigations, and suddenly guardians were at my door asking for Plaggâall in one day. Choose a reason, Marinette.â It wasnât vile, it wasnât angry, it wasnât even cold. She didnât know how to describe it.
âYou disappeared.â
âI couldnât stand to be in Paris any longer.â
âYou didnât tell me.â
âWhat would I say?!â He replied, his voice loud, far louder than he obviously intended. He flinched as it echoed through the air, and suddenly she was all knives and anger.
âHello Marinette,â she responded, âor should I say Ladybug, the girl Iâve claimed to be in love with for six years! Itâs been great, a fun time and all, but man am I tiredâsee you in three years without a single message! Good luck wondering if itâs because of you, if you being the girl behind the mask is what changed it all, even though the only difference was one scrap of red fabric!â She glared, sitting up, âMiss. You.â
âYou think thatâs how it was?â He began, his eyebrows narrowed as he raised from his arms, his eyes staring holes into hers. âI told youâŠâ
âYouâd love whoever was behind the mask,â she finished, pushing off of the ground. âBut letâs be honest hereâNot Lila, not Chloe, and not me. Never me.â She stumbled to her feet, gripping the wall as she finally stood. âI told you who I was, and you were terrified! I saw it, I knew! I should have known whyâ"
âBecause youâre you, because youâre Marinette, because youâre--â he was scrambling to his feet, scrambling to keep her there, scrambling to make some sort of sense.
âBecause Iâm Marinette?â She repeated, and it didnât take a rocket scientist to hear the mistake. To know that she was right, that this was all some stupid curse put upon her by a universe that would thankfully, in a monthâs time, solve the situation.
âThatâs notâJesus Christ, Iââ
He didnât need to say more.
She began to walk away, to risk the treacherous river waves. Anything was better than this, anyone was better than himâ
âBecause youâre perfect,â he called before she could even begin to walk out that stupid door, and every cell in her body stopped moving. âBecause youâre pretty and youâre kind. Because you have a perfect family and everyone loves you, Nino loves you, Alya loves you, Iââ He thought better of saying whatever came next there. âBecause you were going to be a fashion designer, and the best one anyoneâs ever seen. Because you try to be good to everyone you meet. Because at the end of the day youâll always be good, too good for me, and IâmâŠâ
âYouâre,â she was surprised that she asked it, that she could process anything.
And there was a pause, a long, heavy one. One where anything, any combination of words could go wrong.
âBecause people would see you walking beside me, and you would still be good, and you would still be kind and you would still be gentle; but theyâd see none of that. Because theyâd look over and see me. Theyâd see what my father made and what my father ruined.â Quietly, he confessed, âyou would be perfect and none of that would matter, because theyâd look over and see Hawkmothâs son.â

Salt-Fic September Day 26: Abandoned
Marinette was numb as she realized what had happened. This was horrible. The class had abandoned her in Gotham, alone. To think everything had been going well. The class had been nicer to her, and Lila wasnât actively trying to ruin her time on the trip. In retrospect, that should have been Marinetteâs first clue that something was wrong. She couldnât believe this, and it had all happened in the course of two days.
The class was trying to come up with a place to go for the end of the year trip. Lila had become the class representative a few months back, when the class had started to believe the worst in Marinette. Lila had turned this into a class discussion in the guise of including the whole class in the decision. In reality, she didnât have any good ideas and just wanted to steal someoneâs idea to avoid the classâ irritation. But no one in the class had any good ideas either. Marinette sat in the back of the room just listening to the chaos of the classâ discussion.
While she may not be the class rep anymore, she still doesnât want her friends to be disappointed by the class trip. She had found an amazing opportunity for the class. The Wayne family was sponsoring a trip to Gotham for the class who submitted the best video essay about their collective accomplishments. Marinette spent several weeks on it, but she was able to submit a video to the contest.
A few weeks passed and Marinette received an email from the contest. Her submission had won the contest! She was thrilled. She was excited to tell everyone, but then she realized that she shouldnât. With the way the class thought of her now, they would likely immediately reject the idea purely because she suggested it. Instead she sent the information to Mrs. Bustier and asked her not to say who won the contest. Surprisingly, she agreed to her request and didnât say anything.
Lila had no idea who won the contest, but she didnât care. This was perfect. Lila immediately claimed the credit for winning the contest. âIt was hard to write the essay through the pain from my sprained wrist, but I did it for you guys.â The class fawned over Lila, thanking her for her dedication. Meanwhile, Marinette just rolled her eyes. The information Mrs. Bustier sent the class specifically said that it was a video essay contest, not a writing contest. How could the class not realize this was a lie? They had the proof right in front of them. But that wasnât important, at least the class would have a nice trip.
That was how the class had ended up in Gotham. The trip had been going surprisingly well. Marinette had expected that Lila would hog all the attention and the class would treat her as coldly as they had back in Paris. But instead, Lila was quieter than normal and the class was chatting with her again. Marinette had hoped that meant that they had realized that Lila was a liar and were willing to be her friends again.
Marinette was having a great time on the trip, when she met him. He had tan skin and dark hair. He was sitting in one of the halls of the Wayne Enterprises building the class was touring. He was sitting on a bench and reading a book. Marinette had been looking for a quiet place to sketch while the class ate lunch and decided to sit next to him. When she sat down, he gave her an incredulous look, as though he couldnât believe she sat there. Then he just turned back to his book, and ignored her.
Time went by, and the two just kept reading and sketching in quiet. Eventually though, the boyâs eyes found Marinetteâs sketchbook again. He stared at the sketch which appeared to be an outfit based off Robinâs costume. âYour work is exquisite. Very detailed.â Marinette was startled by the sudden noise. âThank you. That is kind of you to say.â âIs it based on Robinâs costume? Why did you choose that costume?â Marinette went on to discuss her process for this design. The conversations continued until the end of the lunch for the class. When the class gathered outside of the cafeteria, Marinette had to leave. But before she did, the boy, who she now knew was called Damian, asked her, âI apologize if this is too forward, but would you care to have dinner with me tomorrow night?â Marinette agreed eagerly and was looking forward to seeing Damian again.
Marinette had no idea who exactly Damian was until later that night while speaking with Alya. âGirl, you scored a date with Damian Wayne. So, its tomorrow night? What time?â The girls spent several hours discussing the date. Alya wanted all the details. It felt like old times, before Lila ever appeared. Marinette enjoyed this time with her best friend. Alya even helped her get ready for the date, choosing an outfit and how she should do her hair and makeup. Marinette had no idea what Alya and the rest of the class was really planning.
The next night was one of the best nights in Marinetteâs life. Damian had arrived early and endured some teasing from Alya and the class as Marinette finished getting ready. They left and had a wonderful dinner. Damian even took Marinette for a walk in a nearby park, while his brothers watched from the roof tops to make sure no rouges got any funny ideas. Marinette had a wonderful time. Damian dropped her off back at the hotel, and even walked her to the door to her room. Marinette was in such a happy mood. That was until she opened the door to her room after Damian left. The room was empty. All of Alyaâs things were gone. They had been sharing a room. Marinetteâs things were still there, but Alyaâs things were gone.
Marinette searched the whole hotel, but didnât find anyone from class. She went to the front desk and asked about her class. The person working the desk looked at her in shock. âYou are still here? Your class already left, said there was some emergency in Paris.â Marinette panicked, expecting a bad akuma and checked for news on her phone. But there wasnât anything. Instead, there was an unread text.
You shouldnât have messed with Lila. Maybe this will teach you a lesson. Have a good time getting home.-Alya
Marinette couldnât believe it. The class had abandoned her in Gotham.
She didnât know what to do. She didnât know how to get home. She didnât have money to get a plane ticket, and the class must have done something to her original ticket. She called her parents and they got her a ticket for the first available flight, which wouldnât be until tomorrow evening. Marinette spoke with the hotel staff member at the desk, to see about staying in her room one more night. But they told her that someone else had already checked into the room for the night. Her stuff was brought to her from the room and she didnât know what to do now. She had no where to stay for the night.
Marinette realized she had only one option. She gathered her stuff and went to the Wayne Manor. When she arrived, she was greeted by an older man who stared at her inquisitively. âGood evening. I was having dinner with Damian earlier tonight. Something has happened and I didnât know where else to go, may I please speak with him?â The butler looked at her warily, but did let her in the manor. He led her to a parlor and went to fetch Damian.
A few minutes passed and he returned with Damian following with a confused look on his face. âMarinette? What happened? Why are you here?â Marinette explained everything that had happened since Damian dropped her off. âSo, they just abandoned me here. I already have a flight booked for tomorrow night thanks to my parents. But I donât have anywhere to stay tonight. Iâm sorry to impose, but I didnât have anywhere else to turn.â Damian was furious. How dare the class do this to her?
Alfred had gone to get Bruce and fill him in on the situation. Bruce came into the parlor as well, to see Damian comforting an upset Marinette. Bruce approached the young couple, âOf course you may stay here tonight Marinette. After all, my family sponsored your classâ trip. That makes you my responsibility until you return to Paris. Make yourself at home. Now, I think I will go call your parents and tell them you are staying here with me.â  Marinette felt at ease, knowing that things were being handled.
Marinette was returned to Paris in the morning, but she never returned to Francois Dupont. Her parents pulled her out of that school immediately after they learned their daughter had been left behind. She was now enrolled in an arts school that Chloe and Adrien had transferred to before everything in Gotham had happened. She also spent a lot of time in Gotham when she was on a break from school. She had to visit her boyfriend obviously. While Damian wished she had transferred to Gotham, he was happy that Marinette was in a better school. Marinette was happier than she had been in a long time.
Lila ended up being exposed a few months after the Gotham incident. Marinette never got the details of how it happened, she only found out because the class showed up to try and apologize to her. Marinette stopped them, âI accept your apology, but I canât fully forgive you. You abandoned me in one of the most dangerous cities in the world. You didnât care at all what happened to me. I had no where to stay that night and no way home. I could have been really hurt. Iâm sorry but we canât be friends anymore, I canât be friends with people that would do that to me.â The class didnât like it, but they accepted it. They knew what they did was unforgiveable.
While Marinette had been beyond hurt by what the class had done, she wouldnât have changed anything about the trip. She learned who her true friends were and who wasnât. She had also met Damian, who she had grown much closer to over the months after the trip. She was the happiest she had ever been and was glad that everything had happened the way it did. She was living an amazing life, with friends and family that cared for her and a boyfriend who truly loved her.

A Blanc Slate, Chapter 4
<Previous Next >
10. Cooking Together
Things with Adrien had beenâŠoddly tense.
He felt even more closed off than normal. Marinette wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt and say that it was just because the police and detectives had been showing up more frequently lately. After all, Gabrielâs death had been determined to be by trauma to the back of his head and not due to the burns or smoke inhalation, and therefore Adrienâs injuries became suspicious.
Adrien had confessed that his father and he did get into a physical altercation, but it had been in self-defense. Apparently, Adrien had had to face his father that day when he was finishing dragging the last of his belongings out of the house, and it had ended with them fighting in the main hall. Considering Gabriel had been found in his office, that already eased suspicion.
Secondly, Adrien swore hadnât caused the injury to Gabrielâs skull. Adrienâs fist had apparently been broken when he threw a punch that landed on his fatherâs jaw, which had knocked Gabriel down so Adrien could run from the house.
His story should have left Adrien in the clear, but of course the investigation had to continue until everyone was convinced it could be closed.
While Marinette was certain this put an enormous amount of stress on Adrien, she knew the collapsing of his fatherâs company also had to play a part in his exhaustion. After all, Adrien was the one who had to deal with it, and sheâd watched him work himself to the point of crashing out on his couch.
Maybe he had a good excuse after all for not calling Nino or Alya. He barely had time for himself.
Marinette, on the other hand, realized sheâd grown too comfortable forcing herself into Adrienâs life. When she started this routine of hers, sheâd initially tried to coax answers out of him or convince him to rely on his friends more. But after her last meeting with Chat over a week ago nowâŠ
She stayed quiet.
It wasnât like Marinette believed that she was the only one at fault in that situation, but she also knew she couldnât change Chat. The only thing she could change was herself, and when Chat had pointed out her micro-managing habits derived from her need to fix things, she couldnât deny his words. Fixing things was what she did. It was a hard habit to break, but she would have to out of respect for the people she cared for.
So, she stopped trying to pry information out of Adrien, but she realized that not prying didnât mean she had to stop reaching out for him. Which was why sheâd started cooking for him and helping him clean his apartment while he dealt with things on the phone or emails or one of the plethora of other things that was on his plate.
She tried not to force conversation too frequently, and when they did chat, she let it flow naturally while trying not to purposefully pry. She was here to help, not to fix.
As hard as that was.
âSmells good.â
Marinette glanced up, only to see Adrien was now at her side. She gave him a smile. âYou mentioned you liked this meal the last time you had it, so I thought Iâd make it again.â
Absently, he nodded, staring down at the food in the pan. After a moment, he turned back to her. âWhy are you doing this?â
Her brow furrowed. âWhat do you mean?â
âI know you have to have better things to do than come play housewife for me.â
The heat that sprawled across her cheeks reminded her that her crush on this man still raged on. If her thirteen-year-old self could see her now, not turning into a complete and total bumbling spaz at the mere mention of the word âhousewifeâ, she might die of shock. Even her current self was impressed that the most reaction he elicited from her was a blush.
But that might have to do with the fact her romantic heart had grown increasingly torn between him and another blonde man in her life.
She shrugged. âBecause youâre my friend, and I care about your well-being.â
âYeah, but⊠why? Iâve basically been shutting you out the last two weeks.â
âYouâre stressed.â
âI know what Iâm doing,â he grumbled, voice quiet as though chastising himself.
She could feel the guilt radiating off Adrien. They both knew this cold nature wasnât his true character. Marinette was already willing to let it slide due to his circumstances, but the fact even he was willing to admitâalbeit in a roundabout wayâthat his actions were wrong made Marinette all the more willing to forgive him. âItâs okay,â she said. âIâll let it slide.â
âYou shouldnât.â
âYouâre under stress. Itâs not like you donât have a reason.â
âNo, itâs an excuse that still didnât excuse the behavior you shouldnât have to put up with.â
âAre you trying to say I shouldnât bother with you?â
âBasically.â
The bluntness of his words surprised her. She stopped stirring the contents of the pan, turning her attention back to Adrien. âWhy? Do you want me to stop?â
He paused, hesitating. âYeah. You should.â
The words hurt, but there was something in his tone that prompted her to question, âAre you saying that because Iâm bothering you? Or because you think youâre bothering me?â
He didnât answer, the silence hanging in the air answering in his stead.
âYouâre not bothering me,â she assured. âAnd unless you really want to be alone, please, stop pushing me away. Iâm your friend, and Iâm more than happy to do this.â
She went back to cooking, turning down the heat on the stove before she burned anything.
âWhat if Iâm not as great as you think I am?â
Marinette turned her attention back to him, her brow furrowed in confusion. âWhat?â
When she met Adrienâs gaze, those green eyes of his were somewhat softer than they had been. More open and raw, allowing her to see the extent of the pain he was in. It broke her heart that her immediate thought was his pain seemed to rival Chatâs. âWhat if Iâm not the guy you thought you knew over the last few years?â
Marinette bit her lip, mulling over his words and how to respond to them. âWell⊠I canât get to know you again if you keep pushing me away.â
The surprise in his eyes hurt, like he didnât expect her to be so willing with a second chance. âWhat if you wonât like what you see?â
âThatâs for me to decide, not you to decide for me.â
Again, a stretch of silence settled between them.
âHey,â Marinette began again. âI know I shouldnât pry, and if I am then tell me, but are you pushing us away for some reason? Maybe because you donât think youâre worthy to be our friend?â
Adrien blinked, then turned away, seemingly unable to look at her.
Carefully, she reached out and lightly touched his shoulder, just as a reminder she was there. âWeâre not going to abandon you, Adrien. Good people donât just abandon their friends in the middle of trouble. And so, no matter what happened with your dad, weâre not going to leave you behind.â
âBut why do you want to take on my shit?â
âBecause thatâs what friends do,â Marinette said. âBecause humans are weird and decide that they enjoy the presence of certain people in their life enough that sticking around through the shit is worth it to keep that person around.â
âEven if that person isnât the same person you once knew?â
âYeah,â she easily said. âBesides, I know youâll change and grow up, but Iâll bet that at heart, youâre still the same person we love.â
Adrien was silent for a long while, long enough for Marinette to finish cooking dinner. When she pulled out plates, Adrien took them from her.
âIâll serve you tonight,â he said. âYou can go have a seat. Thank you.â
With a smile, Marinette let him take the dishes. âYouâre welcome.â
11. Take a Break
Marinette was sketching in her room when she heard a knock on her trap door.
At first, she thought she was imagining things, but when she heard the knock again, she was up like a shot. She flung open the trap door with a bang, shocked but thrilled to see Chat there, crouched before her so as to be on her level.
âHey stranger,â she said with a wide grin she couldnât tamp down.
He gave her a hint of a grin. âIâm not staying long. Iâm just taking a little break from work and thought Iâd come by to apologize for the last time I was here.â
Marinette frowned. âIâd like to apologize, too. You were right; I was being overly nosy. I do like fixing things, but I donât have the ability to âfixâ you or force my help on you. Sorry.â
Chat shook his head. âI know you meant well,â he said. âI was being pretty nasty to you. A friend kinda made me rethink my behavior recently, so Iïżœïżœïżœm sorry, too.â
With a smile, Marinette extended her hand. âTruce?â
When Chat glanced at her hand, Marinette felt a blush come to her cheeks. âOh, um, I wonât try to drag you in or anything. But⊠uh⊠how about a fist bump?â
The smile that crossed Chatâs lips was small and sad. The first thing that came to Marinetteâs mind was that sheâd just reminded him of, well, her. Just her in spots. The âherâ he was avoiding. And while it still killed her a little on the inside to not understand why, she knew she really couldnât push it out of respect for him. Maybe heâd come to her, Ladybug her, when he was ready. She could hope, at least.
After a momentâs hesitation, he gently tapped her knuckles with his. Marinette had to bite back the âpound itâ that formed automatically on the tip of her tongue.
âCan I interest you in a cookie or two?â she asked instead. âI promise I wonât pry or anything.â
He shook his head and stood. âNo, not today. I just wanted to swing by and apologize.â
Disappointing as it was, Marinette couldnât complain considering that he took the time to come back again at all. âDo you think youâll come back?â
He shrugged. âI donât know. Probably not.â
âIâd be happy if you did.â
He turned to her, that tiny smile still on his lips. âThought you said you werenât going to try to âfixâ me.â
âIâm not âfixingâ you. Iâm just offering you a happy place to hang out that serves cookies.â
He huffed, smile flashing brighter for a second. He still wasnât back to the kitty she knew, but this was much better than before. âNoted. Thanks.â
12. Cuddles
It wasnât that day that he swung by. Or the next. Or the day after that. But four days later, Chat did drop in on her balcony.
And Marinette was more than happy to see him. âHey, look what the cat dragged in.â
âTerrible joke,â he brushed off, leaning back against her balcony railing.
She shifted in her chair so she could face him better. âI know. Youâre the punny one of the two of us.â
He just shrugged.
âWell, since youâre here,â Marinette began, âwant a treat?â
âIsnât the saying âfeed a cat, and it will keep coming backâ?â
âSomething along those lines,â Marinette said with a grin, standing from her balcony chair. âAnything you want in particular?â
âSomething sweet that will make the ringing in my ears go away,â he said, his eyes closing and ears dropping with exhaustion. âIâve been getting yelled over the phone at all day.â
With a sad nod, Marinette headed down the stairs to collect a chocolate pastry and bottle of water before slipping back up to the balcony to deliver it to Chat.
When he lit up at the sight of the pastry, Marinette could feel relief bubble up within her. This was her Chat, the one who loved food unlike anyone sheâd ever met. Snacks and sweets had always been met with excited grins and sparkling eyes that could rival a cartoon character. Todayâs reaction might not have been that extreme, but it was still there. Marinette would count it as a win.
âSo, workâs hard?â she asked, plopping down on her chair again.
âHellish like you would not believe,â he muttered, ripping off a bit of the pastry and popping it in his mouth.
âSorry.â
He shrugged. âHonestly, I expected this. Sucks but whatcha gonna do?â
âWell, cuddles are out of the question, so I guess just feed you sweet things?â
Chat huffed a laugh, his smile the brightest it had been since turning into Chat Blanc. Marinette couldnât help but grin wider at the sight. âI guess if you promise to feed me, Iâll come around again,â he said.
âIâd like that.â
He nodded before popping the last bite into his mouth. âWould you mind if I hung around here a bit? I just want to escape my phone and computer at the moment.â
âStay as long as youâd like, Chat.â
He slid down to sit on the ground. âAppreciate that, Princess.â

Crush
Summary: In Glaciator, while comisserating over their broken hearts, Marinette lets slip the identity of the person she has a crush on. Consequently, Adrien finds himself wondering if Marinette is really 'just a friend' after all. Inspired by the song Taare Gin
AO3
It feels so nice since this happened, my heart feels as though it is a child again.
âYouâve had your heart broken too?â
âYep.â
Chat studied Marinetteâs profile beside him. With the moonlight reflecting off her hair, she looked positively ethereal, and it was hard to believe that anyone would be stupid enough to break her heart.
âFor what itâs worth,â he nudged her gently âIâm sorry you had your heart broken.â
Marinette sighed âthanks, but itâs okay. Adrien canât control when his dad will decide he canât do something, so I really should have expected that he wouldnât make it. I was just disappointed.â
Chat jerked, turning fully to face her. âAdrien?â His mind raced, trying to see if there was any other Adrien she might have been talking about, but how many Adrienâs with strict fathers could Marinette know?
Marinette hummed noncommittally. âOh, yeah Adrienâs a friend of mine. Iâve had this total crush on him since the beginning of the year. He doesnât know though-I can barely get out a sentence in front of him.â She groaned, dropping her head âI donât know why Iâm so upset about today-chances are I probably wouldnât have even talked to him properly anyway.â
She looked so forlorn standing there, Chat felt a pang of guilt at being the one to cause it. Father hadnât forbidden him, but heâd blown off solid plans with his friends-blown off Marinette- for a date with Ladybug that she didnât even show up to.
Karma really hit hard.
Thinking for a long moment, Chat made a decision, getting down from the railing and offering Marinette his hand. âCome with me.â
***
âIâm an idiot,â Adrien groaned, dropping his transformation and falling face first onto his bed.
âReally? Thatâs news to me,â Plagg snarked âwhat did you do this time?â
Flipping over onto his back, Adrien considered confiding in his kwami-Plagg could be surprisingly insightful sometimes-but with the mood he seemed to be in, it would probably be better to just stare at the ceiling. âMarinette has a crush on me.â
âWhich one is that again?â
âDonât act like you donât know everyone in my class, Plagg.â
Plagg sniffed disdainfully âI have an image to keep up, you know.â
âImage?â Adrien snorted, looking over at where Plagg had set up blocks of cheese on his desk and was in the process of eating them like he was Pacman. âWhat image? A cheese loving gremlin? No-one sees you anyway!â
âA being of darkness who cares not for petty mortal issues.â
âHe cares about Pacman though.â Adrien grinned, dodging the piece of cheese Plagg threw at his face. âAlright, alright Iâll leave you alone! Itâs getting late anyway.â
Despite the late hour, Adrien struggled to sleep, replaying the events of the night over and over again. Strangely, though heâd looked forward to surprising her, Ladybugâs rejection hadnât stung as much as he expected it to. What did surprise him however, was how his mind kept straying to Marinette instead.
Heâd always held a special fondness for her, but had chalked it up to the fact that she was one of his first friends at school, but what if it was something else? Adrien couldnât deny that his first instinct hadnât been to reject her gently, rather, heâd felt something stir inside him when Marinette had told him about her crush; a pleasant warmth filling his chest at the idea of Marinette-talented, kind, sweet Marinette loving him.
It almost felt too good to be true.
***
âHey Marinette!â Adrien called out, waving and making his way across to Marinette as he spotted her coming down the stairs.
He realised his mistake seconds later, wincing when Marinetteâs head snapped up, her mouth forming a small âoâ of surprise and she stared at him, not noticing how her hand fell from the railing until her foot slipped out from underneath her.
It would have been quite the nasty fall, had Adrien not rushed forward to catch her, his arms coming around Marinette to steady her. âGot you,â he murmured, unable to hide his smile when her eyes popped open at his voice and he led her carefully down the stairs.
She let go of him when they got to the bottom, following behind him as he went to meet up with Alya and Nino. âWeâre all going to get milkshakes at that new place that opened,â he asked. âDo you wanna come too?â
âUhâŠâ
Knowing what he did now-that Marinette had a crush on him-Adrien could have kicked himself for being so oblivious.
It had been a week now since heâd found out, and he had discovered that Marinette wasnât exactly the most subtle person in the world. In fact it was quite the opposite.
He actually found it quite endearing; the way she blushed bright red whenever he spoke to her, stumbling over her words, and in class heâd even felt her eyes boring into him from where she sat behind him in class, punctuated occasionally by dreamy sighs.
Adrien found that he quite liked the feeling of being the object of her affections, and heâd started making more of an effort to hang out with her, if only to see the adorable blush that painted her cheeks.
âI canât,â Marinette wrung her hands together, avoiding his gaze. âIâm belping at the hakery.â her eyes widened âhelping at the bakery! Iâm helping maman and papa at the bakery.â
Adrien shrugged, swallowing his disappointment. âOkay. Maybe next time?â
âTotally!â she nodded her head jerkily, spinning on her heel and catching herself without stopping when she tripped, and hurrying away.
âWhat was that about?â Adrien turned to see Alya and Nino watching them in bemusement.
Alya wiggled her eyebrows suggestively âyouâre suddenly getting very buddy buddy with Marinette...is there anything you want to share with the class?â
âNot really.â Adrien sighed. âI just want to get her to be more comfortable around me.â
âUh huh,â Alya used her best journalist voice on him and Adrien sent her a quizzical look. âWhy, because you wanna ask her out on a date?â
âMaybe,â he replied absentmindedly, not noticing the gleeful expression that took over Alyaâs face at his admission, distracted by the Gorilla who had pulled up the curb outside the school. âHey do you wanna take the car to the milkshake place or should we walk?â
***
âI think I have a crush,â Chat said out loud. Beside him, Ladybug turned to him, an amused glint in her eye.
"Reallyâ
He smirked âyou jealous, bugaboo?â
âHa!â she scoffed âin your dreams! â
âNot anymore,â he muttered. Chat had expected things to be awkward after his ill fated âdateâ with Ladybug, but thankfully, in the month since sheâd rejected him, their partnership had only seemed to strengthen. This was due in most part to the fact that they were now on the same page about where they stood as partners-and friends.
It was for this reason then, that heâd bought the subject up at the end of patrol when they simply sat together and talked.
Ladybugâs eyebrows rose high on her forehead. âWow, it must really be serious then, huh?â
âYou have no idea,â he groaned âever since I found out she has a crush on me, sheâs all I think about. And talk about-according to Plagg.â
It had been a slow process, getting closer to Marinette, but the rewards were certainly worth the effort. He could actually hold a conversation with her now, though nine times out of ten Marinette still blushed the entire time. It was adorable.
Chat sighed. âSheâs just so amazing. I knew that before since weâve been friends for a while, but Iâve been talking to her more and I canât get over the fact that she likes me. She could do so much better, you know?â
âHey, donât put yourself down like that! I happen to know for a fact that youâre a pretty amazing guy-anyone would be lucky to have you.â
âHeh, thanks bugaboo,â he smiled softly âenough about me-whatâs going on with your guy? Any progress?â
At the mention of her crush, Ladybug blushed, ducking her head shyly. âActually...weâve been hanging out a lot recently-I think heâs gonna ask me out.â
âAw thatâs great!â The thought of Ladybug seeing someone else no longer caused a pang of jealousy in his heart, in fact, âIâm happy for you.â he said genuinely.
âI am too,â Ladybug paused. âHappy for you-I mean.â She clarified âIâm happy for you too.â
âYeah, I think I got that.â
âShut up â she nudged him playfully. âYou know, you should ask your girl out too. I bet sheâd say yes.â
Chat thought about Marinette, the way her eyes crinkled when she laughed; how she got a deep crease in between her brows whenever she concentrated that he had to resist the urge to smooth out; how her hair fell in dark waves around her face whenever she let it down and the way sheâd stuttered and blushed after heâd said he liked it that way. How heâd planned at least thirty dates for them already, ready for every occasion, and had only realised what a goner he was after date number twenty three.
âYeah,â he murmured, looking across the city skyline in the direction he knew Marinette lived. âI think I willâ

chronicles of a parisian dumbass 19
iâm sorry iâve been MIA ; ; iâve been up to my ears in streaming and also returning to work in-person. either way, i hope you enjoy this update of chronicles. better late than never right?
strap in đđ
If Luka could get at his phone, he wouldnât know what to type. maybe a vague, oh, fuck. Maybe some long thread about how cryptic conversation starters only ever scared him and ended both of his relationshipsâonly to follow up with silence in the face of a couple of likes, or a reply from a sort-of-stranger that would debilitate him, remind him of his own vulnerability, more than it would reassure him. Hell, maybe even a message to Bubbles about how he was right all along that heâd need the luck. Or how Bubbles was right about how he really was in for it the moment he stepped into the bakery.
Itâs just that, with the way Marinette Dupain-Cheng is looking at him on her balconyâall sad, scared softnessâhe gets the feeling that heâs not meant to repeat whatever she tells him.
Luka steels himself, loosens his death grip on the neck of the guitar, and releases a breath he doesnât want to hold onto anymore. âYeah,â he says. âAnything.â It comes out choked from how tight his vocal cords are. The way they get sometimes when he plugs in the microphone and hits RECORD.
She pats the floor in front of her and mumbles something about being on equal ground, and he slides down to meet her, guitar in tow. She looks like she wants to touch it, feel now real it is. Or how real he is. As though that moment with his card wasnât enough.
âItâs about your sister,â she says, her gaze darting away in shame. âAnd Adrien. Sort of.â
âOkay,â he says. Itâs slow, and uncertain, but he hopes it tells her heâs all ears.
Marinette looks at her lap and draws herself up and in. Like sheâs wanted to tell him this for a long time. Like sheâs only just found the words for it. âWe were pretty close,â she says. âIn grade school. Not as close as⊠Rose, yeah, Rose. But we were in the same class for a couple years. I helped her with some class picture stuff, she listened to me yammer on about Adrien after he joined our class⊠even helped me come up with some ideas on how to⊠confess to him? Win him over? I donât know.â She rubs the back of her neck. âActually, I think all my girl friends did that.â
Luka nods slowly, thinks of the school photos in the album Juleka bought from the thrift shop, tries to match faces in his head. He thinks he sees pigtails. Or maybe a bun. He could be wrong. âSo,â he says, âyou had it pretty bad for him, huh.â
âI dunno if I had it bad. Like I said, puppy love. I mean, I thought we were soulmatesâGod, I even named our kidsâand I couldnât even get out a sentence in front of him. I didnât even like him at first. Plus, we were like, fourteen. I didnât know any better.â
He shrugs. âJust cause you were fourteen doesnât mean it wasnât real.â He thinks he catches a blush stealing across Marinetteâs face then, but maybe itâs just a trick of the lights. âSo⊠what changed?â
âWith Juleka? Or Adrien?â
âBoth, I guess.â
Marinette turns her head away. âItâs dumb.â
Luka shrugs again, smiling faintly. âSo?â
She starts to pick at her nails, like her hands are just looking for something to do. Without thinking, he gives the spinner ring on his index finger a flick to get her attention, then slides it off and hands it to her. She looks at it with questions in her eyes, then slips it on. It barely fits her index finger, and it wobbles when she gives it a curious flick of her own. It seems to get the job done, at least. âHe lent me his umbrella,â she mumbles, final but sheepish. Then she follows up, before his brow can so much as furrow, âHe was friends with an old bully of mineâMrs. Bourgeoisâs daughter, actuallyâand I caught him doing something with some gum on my chair. And I⊠misjudged him. âAnother flick. âHe was trying to make it up to me. And he said⊠he didnât have any friends. He hadnât even been to school.â
He lets out a hollow laugh. âRich kids, huh?â And then, at the first sign of her discomfort, âSorry, Iââ
âNo,â she says. âItâs okay, I was just thinkingâŠâ She presses her thumb into the curve and the aged grooves of the ring more than she actually spins it. Like she cares about losing it more than she cares about comforting herself. âI think everything around me told me that⊠that was how I was supposed to feel. Unwavering love. Now itâs been years, and I think⊠I think I just wanted to be that friend for him. I just wanted to be what he was looking for.â
Luka lifts his gaze from the ring to her face. âWho says thatâs not love?â He doesnât know where the words come from. They just feel like the right ones to say.
Marinette freezes, blinking at her hands. She doesnât say anything; the only sound is the whine of his ring as the metal scrapes together with another flick.
When the silence goes on a bit too long for either of their liking, Luka clears his throat uncertainly. âSo, umâŠâ
She speaks so he doesnât have to. âJuleka,â she murmurs. âRight, umâŠâ Itâs hard to tell whoâs more uncomfortable between the two of them. Who's really supposed to say what next. âWell, I mean⊠you can sort of imagine that I wasnât the only one who wanted to⊠yâknow. Be with Adrien.â
Luka doesnât have to imagine, but he nods anyway.
âNotââ Marinette hedgesâânot that Juleka was competition or anything. I mean, duh. Just⊠there was this other girlâthere were other girls, andâŠâ
âYou donât have to tell me this,â he urges. âIf it still hurts.â
She closes her eyes. Hard, and just for a moment. âPlease let me tell you this.â
Her voice wavers. Thatâs all the cue Luka needs to stay quiet. To let her say everything, or nothing, at her pace.
âHer name was Lila,â she says. âShe was a new girl. From Italy. Everyone liked her, except⊠she lied. Like, compulsively. About connections she had, places sheâd been, charity work she did. And she did it because she wanted everyone to like her. She was just telling people what they wanted to hear because the attention made her feel important. She thrived on it.â She gets to her feet. âSorry, I canât sit still when I get all⊠agitated. You know?â
Luka gestures vaguely at the balcony space. âThat makes two of us.â
Marinette takes that as her cue to start pacing and turning on her heels, only pausing every so often to stare up at the night sky. âI was jealous,â she admits. âI was also our class representative. And I mightâve⊠used that to my advantage.â
Maybe he shouldnât say Hell yeah out loud, but heâs definitely thinking it.
âI kept tabs on peopleâs schedules, you know?â she says. âSo we could work on important events and class projects and stuff. There was one we were planning for Adrien, to celebrate that heâd been in school with us for a year and all. And it just so happened thatâŠâ she shrugs, feigning apology. âAll the days that worked conflicted with all her charity work.â
Luka whistles, half-impressed. âThis the part where you tell me she decided to make your life a living hell like some high school drama villain?â
Marinetteâs face falls. âYeah,â she says, and her voice cracks, and he wishes he werenât right. âBut all she did was exactly what I did. Convinced⊠everybody⊠that every little thing I did was proof that I wasnât a real friend. That I couldn't commit to anything because I committed to everything. And especially with how I avoided her⊠didnât trust her, treated her cruelly. she turned everyone against me, a little at a time. Even Alya.â She shifts her weight. âEven Juleka.â
Lukaâs heart sinks. He almost wants to reach for her hands when she paces toward him. Almost wants to kick himself for asking, âAnd⊠then what?â
She lingers at the balcony railing, perhaps preferring to tell the night sky the rest. âShe got me expelled.â
Luka tenses.
Marinette doesnât notice. âIâd been telling myself for months that I deserved it. Eventually I just⊠believed it. Let it happen. Never talked to my classmates again.â She shrugs. âI cried a lot. Transferred schools. Threw myself into⊠everything. Because if Lila said that was what I was doingâjust over-committingâI might as well own it. And because if I was constantly doing something, then I couldnât stop to think about all the bad things I deserved. And I couldnât be paranoid about being judged for every little thing I did.â
âWhatâŠâ Heâs trying, with every fiber in him, to keep his heart from breaking for her. To keep himself from blurting out how well he knows the feeling. âWhat about Alya? And Adrien, and, uh⊠Mrs. Bourgeoisâs kid?â
Marinette turns to face him, leaning back against the railing, and something in her faceâno, everythingâchanges. Thereâs a tiredness in her eyes, a twitch in her hands. Lines in her face that shouldnât be there for decades. As though sheâs just lived them all over again. âI didnât talk to Alya for over a year. I couldnât be friends with her. I couldnât even talk to her.â Her gaze lowers. âIt was really hard on Nino.â
âNino?â
âOur friend. well. My friend. Her boyfriend. Heâs the one Iâve been helping for that summer project.â She folds her arms tight. âHe apologized first. If it werenât for him, Alya and I still wouldnât be talking. And ChloĂ©, well⊠Mrs. Bourgeoisâs recommendation letter had nothing to do with her. I entered some contests with my portfolio and won a couple of them.â She flicks her gaze back. âI did run into ChloĂ© once. In New York. I guess she decided to live with her mom for a while. She kind of took the âenemy of my enemy is my allyâ approach. Which was⊠weird. But tolerable.â
Luka searches her face, even at a distance, and settles on the end of the deck chair again. âWhat about Adrien?â
The pause that follows is heavy. He canât tell who feels the weight of it more; he just hopes itâs equal. Marinette scrunches up her lips, braces herself on the railing, and all those decades come back. âWell,â she murmurs. âI guess you donât really realize what you have until itâs gone, huh.â
He sobers. âHe felt guilty.â
âI guess we all did.â She scuffs her heel. âI guess we all do.â
Luka waits. There must be more she wants to say.
There is. She even starts pacing again. âMy guidance counselor used to tell me that all thatâs necessary for the triumph of evil is that good people do nothing. It was supposed to be comforting.â
He raises an eyebrow. âIt doesnât sound very comforting.â
âIt wasnât so bad,â she says, âHe reminded me they were still good people, and good people could do bad things, and even if they were still good, it was okay for me to not want those people in my life anymore. I dunno.â She rocks on her feet. âMaybe someone told Adrien the same thing and he couldnât stand doing nothing anymore.â
âDid you want him?â he asks. âIn your life? Do you still?â
She heaves a laugh like itâs hard to do. âWould you think it was messed up if I said yes?â
âNo, of course not.â
âHe could see it,â she says. âWhat Lila was doing. That was why he felt so bad. That was why he convinced her to clear my name. Turns out he knows how to use things to his advantage, too.â
Luka softens and runs his fingers over the body of his guitar. âHe must love you a lot,â he says, âif he was willing to do all that for you.â
At first, Marinette doesnât say anything, only grips the railing tighter. He can see it, how her knuckles go white, as though thereâs something sheâs trying to forget. Then she murmurs, âShe tried to talk to me. Juleka did. To⊠apologize⊠I ghosted her. I didnât want to deal with it anymore. For a while, I didnât want to deal with anything anymore. I donât want you to think it didnât hurt me, because it did. It did hurt.â
Lukaâs stomach turns. He puts his guitar down. âThatâs why youâve been so nice to me, huhâŠâ Thereâs a lump in his throat that he tries to swallow; he only partly succeeds. âYou felt guilty about avoiding her and just⊠wanted to make it up to her.â
Something flashes across Marinetteâs face. Horror, maybe. Or shame. âNo, Iâthatâs not what Iââ
âIâm not upset.â Heâs not. Heâs staring at the floor with a pit in his stomach and a shake in his limbs, and his knee is starting to throb again in protest, but heâs not upset. âReally. I get it. If thatâs what you needed for your own closure, thenâŠâ
A ragged breath and a sniffle cut him off, and heâs barely able to lift his gaze before Marinette kneels in front of him, placing his ring in his palm and closing his fingers around it. He canât revel in the touchâwonât let himselfâbecause her hands are cold. Trembling. âDonât go,â she whispers, squeezing his hand tight, and when he looks up there are tears staining her cheeks. âIâm sorry, I know I shouldnât even be asking this of you, just⊠please, donât go.â
Luka learned, a long time ago, to look for the things unsaid. when I canât make it really meant Iâm trying to avoid you. when youâre certainly different really meant God, you are a level of fucked-up I canât put into words. When we need to talk really meant it's over.
He hears, âPlease donât go,â and he thinks he finds, I want you in my life. Donât you want me in yours?
Or, maybe, I need you.
Or maybe itâs as simple, as desperate, as, Not you, too.
Heâs known Juleka, and maybe even himself, long enough to know what that sounds like in other people.
âHey,â he murmurs. âHey, Iâm not going.â
Marinette freezes, still staring at their hands. âWhy? You have every reason to.â
âBecause Iâm not.â
âYouâve known me for like, two months, as what? A bakerâs daughter? Overly nice customer service? Someone who just gave you kindness out of some dumb high school guilt?â
âIâm not going,â Luka says again.
âYou should.â Marinette rubs her eyes dry. âWhy not?â
âBecause I donât want to.â He coaxes his hand open, slides the ring back onto her finger. âIsnât that enough?â
Marinette studies the ring, giving it a cautious flick. As though touching it might break it altogether. âItâs too big.â
âThen Iâll trade you.â Luka takes the ring back, digs around in his pocket, and fishes out a couple of guitar picks. âHere. Take one.â
One of them has a picture of Jagged Stoneâs face. The other has a Kitty Section logo, crudely painted on with some of Julekaâs old nail polish. Marinette takes the first one almost instantly with another sniffle, examining it from all sides. âHeâs⊠my favorite.â
âYeah.â Luka smiles, not minding that she canât see it, and thinks of the album cover. âMine, too.â
She runs her thumb over the faces and edges, blinking away whatever tears threaten to stick around. âWhy?â she asks again.
âTo prove it.â He tilts his head. âTo prove Iâm not going.â
She turns the pick this way and that, but doesnât put it away just yet. Instead, her eyes drift toward his guitar and the amp, and then up to him. âHey,â she says. âDo you think you could do me a favor?â
âI know,â he tells her. âI wonât tell Jules about any of this. And I wonât make you talk to her if you donât want to.â And Iâll stay. I swear to God Iâll stay.
âNot that.â Marinette presses her lips together, still sitting on her knees. Still holding on to the pick for dear life. âCan you play it again?â
âWhat, the song from your playlist?â
âMe.â She looks away, her cheeks flushed and blotchy. âCan you play me. Again.â
Lukaâs heart picks up, so loud he can barely hear anything else. Even her. âYeah,â he says, setting his guitar in his lap, âYeah, I think I got it this time.â
i guess itâs eleven now.

Even the Losers
Chapter 8
Chapter 1Â Â Â Chapter 7
âYour father is Bruce Wayne and now he wants to reconnect,â Nino recapped as though anyone involved in the call was unaware. From the look Chloe gave him, he was particularly happy she was in New York not Paris and couldnât actually smack him upside the head.
âThank you for that waste of time and breath,â Chloe grumbled.
âI just⊠donât see the problem.â  Nino did actually move away from Alya before she could swat him.  âWhat?  Your dad is Bruce freaking Wayne!  Even if you donât connect with him, you can totally draw on that Wayne money.â
He wasnât fast enough to move away from her smack that time. Â âOw!â he pouted at Alya.
âItâs not about the money!â Alya groaned, already exasperated by him. Â âItâs about him not wanting to have a relationship until the press found out. Â Itâs about him cutting her out but taking in a gaggle of other kids.â Â Nino lightly shoved Alyaâs shoulder and motioned toward Marinetteâs expression on the screen. Â Alya grimaced and gave him a nod of understanding.
Marinette looked down and pursed her lips to keep from frowning. Â It was bad enough thinking it in her own head constantly, but hearing it out loud, repeated back to her? Â That made it so much worse. Â That made her feelings real. Â That legitimized her feelings. Â She couldnât pretend like she was just overreacting. Â They were justified. Â Which meant she couldnât just freeze them out. Â Or rather she shouldnât. Â She had to face them.
She focused her energy on not changing her body language so she didnât worry Adrien any more than he was already. Â Keeping her body relaxed instead of tensing up. Â Adrien had gone into a frenzied panic when he and Max had returned from their apartment search to find her collapsed on the floor, blocking the door. Sheâd missed the worst of it according to what Tikki said, but she still remembered the terrified look in his eyes when she woke up. Â He hadnât left her side since, keeping constant physical contact. Â
Max seemed to inherently understand the situation and was jumping up to get anything either of them might need so they didnât have to abandon each other for even a few moments. Â She was eternally grateful to him for it because she wasnât sure who the physical proximity was having more of a calming effect on, her or Adrien, but regardless, they both needed it. Â
Her attempt to not react didnât seem to have been as effective as she thought it had been judging by the way Adrien hugged her closer to him. Â Marinette lightly bonked her head into his chest and returned her attention to the laptop screen. Â âItâs okay, Nino,â Marinette assured him weakly.
âNo it isnât,â Chloe said over her. Â âBoth of you need to stop talking.â Â She flipped a page in her magazine and looked up at the screen. Â âI mean, thatâs true in general, but especially during this call.â Her eyes were sharp when she looked up but Marinette could see the concern she was trying to hide by focusing on her magazine. Â She wasnât sure what Adrien had told them about how he found her but she could tell it was enough to scare them too.
Marinette rolled her eyes at Chloe. Â âYes, it is.â
Chloe groaned. Â âThis is the way we work Dupain Cheng. Â You and Adrien let people walk all over you, Nino keeps the peace, Alya starts trouble, and I tell people the truth and to back the fuck off when itâs warranted.â
âWhich never starts trouble,â Alya snarked.
âI do not let people walk all over me!â Adrien objected, looking around for support. Marinette gave a curt nod of agreement, but Max was avoiding his eyes and Chloe was staring at him flatly.
âNo, you donât let people walk all over us,â she motioned toward the screen, trying to indicate the rest of them. Â âBut you let everyone walk all over you.â Â Her eyes moved slightly and her eyes narrowed slightly. Â âYou both do.â
Marinette wrinkled her nose at the screen with a pout. Â âI stood up to you,â she groused.
Chloe scoffed. Â âAnd it only took you like ten years to do it. Â So proud of you.â Â She rolled her eyes so strongly, her entire head moved as she did it.
Marinetteâs mouth dropped in offense. Â âIâm better now.â
âAre you, though? Â Really?â Chloe deadpanned.
Marinette pouted. Â âYes!â
âStatistically, she is accurate,â Max added. Â âShe does stand up for herself more now than when we were younger.â Â Marinette pursed her lips at Max, unsure how to respond to his comment. Â On one hand, it defended her. Â On the other hand, she did not at all appreciate how he stressed the word âstatisticallyâ and she was certain everyone else caught that as well.
Chloe opened her mouth to say something but was cut off by Nino. Marinette sighed in relief until she started processing his words.  âI get that itâs hard and it hurts, I guess I just thought you wouldnât take it this hard. After Jagged with Luka and Juleka and your grandfather⊠you forgave all of them.  You helped Jagged with Luka and Juleka, making sure their relationship didnât go bad.â  He motioned vaguely at nothing.  âYou seemed to brush it off and take it as a challenge.  So why isnât this?â
Alya dropped her head in her hands. Â âTact, Nino. Â God.â
âNo, heâs not wrong.â  Marinette frowned as she thought about his words.  âI went after Grand-pĂšre and convinced him to reconnect.  Papa never held it against him so I guess I didnât either. Luka never held it against Jagged, just moved forward.  Maybe itâs just me.  MaybeâŠâ
âNo!â Adrien interrupted before she could follow that train of thought any further. He gently turned her toward him to focus her attention on him. Â âThereâs nothing wrong with you or how youâre reacting. Â Thereâs no wrong way to react to news like this. Â If you feel sad, thatâs fine. Â If you feel annoyed, thatâs fine. Â If you feel frustrated, thatâs okay. Â If you want to just move past it, thereâs nothing wrong with that. Â If you feel angry, thatâs okay. Â And if you feel like you need space, thatâs okay too. Thereâs no wrong way to react to this,â he repeated.
âExcept however Chloe would respond,â Alya added with a smirk.
âHey!â Chloe objected loudly, glaring at the screen, but with no real heat behind it. âFor the record, how I would respond to news like this is to spend all my new found fatherâs money, pressing my boundaries until he finally said something. Â And if he didnât say anything, Iâd use those billions to do whatever the fuck I wanted and never see him in person.â
Marinette blinked at Chloe, as did the rest of the group.  That was certainly⊠an option.  Not one Marinette would ever choose, but it was⊠ Marinette started giggling at the idea.  Adrien joined her quickly while Max, Alya, and Nino watched them worriedly.  Chloe rolled her eyes and flipped the page in her magazine, but the corners of her lips quirked up.
âHe is correct,â Max added, bringing them back to the original point. Â âThere are a variety of ways people will react to finding out they have a parent they didnât know about. Â Markov found hundreds of studies on psychological responses to similar news and responses are extremely varied.â
âJuleka had a harder time with accepting it and connecting to Jagged than Luka did, remember?â Adrien pointed out. Â âAnd thereâs nothing wrong with her. Â She wasnât wrong to react that way, right?â Â Marinette shook her head reluctantly. Â It wasnât that she thought there was anything wrong with the way Juleka reacted, but in agreeing with Adrienâs observation, she would have to agree with his point that she was allowed to freak out about this instead of ignoring it like she wanted to.
âMarinette,â Alya raised her voice to bring attention back to her. Â âYou can do anything you want here and weâll support you. You know that. Â No matter how this ends we all love you. Â No matter how you react, weâll love you. Â Nobody is going to judge you for any decision.â
Chloe scoffed. Â She waited until everyone was looking, or in Alya and Adrienâs cases, glaring at her. âWhat? Â You want me to lie to her?â Â She looked incredulously at the other faces on the video call. Â âWe wonât judge. Â Hell, Iâm willing to scratch his eyes out in public for you. Â But, your name was already getting out there and his name, now yours, is on the largest corporation in the world. Â Every news and gossip organization is going to be talking about it forever if you guys donât make a good show of it.â
âSo?â Alya demanded incredulously. Â âShe should just do whatever is best for publicity?â
âDid I say that?â Chloe scoffed. Â She finally put her magazine down to show how serious she was taking the conversation. âWhen have I ever let the threat of bad publicity stop me from doing something? Â I just said it would be out there, not that she should care. Â Itâs a factor, a big one when sheâs figuring out what she wants.â
âWhat do you want?â Adrien asked gently, turning his attention back to Marinette.
Marinette looked at Adrien for a few seconds while her brain whirred at high speed thinking through all the options.  What did she want?  None of this. Thatâs what she wanted.  After a few seconds she took a breath and let it out. âWhat I want is to not have to deal with any of this.  What I want is to not be his daughter.  What I want is to figure out where we want to live and work and start a company there like we planned.  What I want is to live a normal life now.â  She ignored Chloeâs scoff.  âWhat I wantâŠâ she sighed and looked away.  âWhat I want doesnât matter.â
Chloe huffed almost loudly enough for it to echo. Â âOf course it matters, it just doesnât change the past or the current situation. Â But, you control your next steps. Â So Ladybug this bitch. Â Some egomaniacal, rich, pampered megalomaniac has created an utterly ridiculous problem that you now have to fix. Â This is your specialty. Â Show this bastard who he walked out on. Â Make him regret not dying with his parents.â
âWoah! What the Hell?â Nino exclaimed. âToo far.â
Chloe scoffed and looked back at her nails. Â âIf you think that was too far, you should have heard what I wanted to say. Â I toned it way down for your sensitive ears,â she added condescendingly. Â She just barely looked up when Marinette started giggling. Â Chloeâs lips quirked up the more Marinette tried to stifle the slightly unhinged sounding giggles.
âDude, thatâs her grandparentsâŠâ Nino whisper shouted.  Marinette suddenly sobered and paled in realization.
âOr!â Adrien interjected with false excitement positioning himself between Marinette and the screen. Â âOr, you could, you know, try to build a relationship with him.â Â He looked decidedly away from the incredulous looks from Alya and Chloe and the doubtful look from Nino on screen, trying to pretend like they werenât judging him. Â He moved closer to Marinette and took her hands in his giving her a sincere, serious look. Â âYou have someone, your father, who wants to connect to you.â Â
He ignored the loud scoff from the computer and continued as though Alya or Chloe, or both, hadnât verbalized their opinion. Â They clearly werenât that opposed or they would have said it instead of making a noise. Â He âaccidentallyâ closed the video chat and gave Max a pointed look. Â
Max nodded slowly. Â âIâm just going to go to my room for a few minutes. Â Let me know if you want to talk.â
Marinette and Adrien both shot him thankful smiles. Â Adrien waited until his door was closed before looking back at Marinette with a concerned look. Â âYou got screwed in this deal. Â Nobody can deny that, and however you feel, thatâs real and valid. Â Itâs okay to be hurt. Â Itâs okay to be scared. Â Itâs okay to say this is too much for you right now, or ever. Â But, do you really want to walk away? Â Not connect to him? Â Not try?â
âHe didnât wantâŠâ Marinette started weakly.
âMaybe he wasnât ready,â he cut her off before she could spiral again. Â âMaybe this is the universeâs way to saying itâs time. You got the embodiment of luck in your pocket. Â Is it really so farfetched to think luck played a role?â
âBad luck,â Marinette scoffed to the floor.  Adrien gently rapped her on the top of her head with his knuckle.  She looked back up and caught his unimpressed look. Marinette sighed and looked away before looking back up at him uncertainly.  âI donât knowâŠâ
âDo you think you want to try?â Tikki asked floating out of her resting spot. âItâs your choice. Â But I donât think this is going away, so whichever decision you go with youâll have to face the consequences.â
âOr I could just cataclysm him,â Plagg offered rubbing his paws together. Â He darted away from Tikki before she could shut him up.
âNo!â Marinette and Adrien chorused at the same time.
Adrien glared at Plagg but made sure to soften his eyes before looking back at Marinette. Â âOkay, maybe things donât work out with him. Â But it sounds like you have siblings. Â You already like Jason. Â Maybe youâll like them too.â Â He gave her a small smile and rubbed her arms soothingly. Â âYou always wanted siblings.â
Marinette gave him a weak smile back. Â âI donât need siblings anymore. Â I have you. Â Thatâs more than enough. Â I donât think I could handle more of yous.â
Adrien scoffed good naturedly at her. Â âIf anything Iâve made having siblings more appealing.â
Marinette scoffed playfully. Â âKeep telling yourself that,â she muttered.
He pulled her into a hug. Â âYou always wanted more. Â And it sounds like you might have sisters.â
âMore people he adopted after walking away,â Marinette groused into his shirt.
Adrien hugged her tighter. Â âMaybe he had a reason? Â Or maybe he just royally messed up. Â Maybe he hates himself for the decision. Â Itâs something you wonât find out unless you stay. Â And you can just talk once and see how you feel about it. If it doesnât go well, you can walk away and we can find that bar Roy mentioned. Â If it goes well, you can decide to stay or we can decide to move to New York or Metropolis, like we were thinking and you can still see him every so often.â
âEven if it doesnât go perfectly,â Tikki added softly, âitâll give you closure. Â You deserve to have that.â
âAnd youâll wonder what could have happened if you donât,â Adrien nudged her gently. Â âYou know youâre going to regret not trying.â
âSo is that an absolute no on the cataclysm idea,â Plagg popped up between them. Â âBecause Iâm still willing.â
Marinette rolled her eyes at him but shot him a grateful smile. Â It was as close as Plagg got to admitting he cared. Â She scratched him on the forehead and looked back to Adrien with a frown. Â âI donât think I can handle this.â
âIâll stay with you.  And Max will be here.  Tikki will be here for you.  Plagg will be here, but donât let that deter youâŠâ
âHey!â Plagg pouted.
Adrien continued without acknowledging him. Â âChloe could be here in a few hours if we needed and sheâd drop everything to get here, no matter what she says. Â Alya and Nino will only be a phone call away. Â We will support you no matter what you want to do. But we canât make this decision for you, so, the question is what do you want to do?â
Marinette groaned and pouted at him. Â âYou sure you canât do this for me?â
Adrien gave her a sympathetic look and shook his head. âNot this time, Bug.â Â He waited a few minutes for her to think through her options. Â When she looked just as lost after another few minutes after that, he spoke up gently. âDo you want to talk to Sabine and Tom first? Â They might have some answers you need to make your decision.â
Marinette looked back up at him with a pathetic looking pout. Â âCanât I just sleep through this instead?â
Adrien chuckled and shook his head, relieved she was now in a light enough mood to make jokes. Â âYou could,â he nodded and put on a mock serious face, âbut your problems will still be there when you woke up.â
âWhat bullshit,â she scoffed in a weak voice.
Adrien nodded. Â âYep, utter bullshit.â
Marinette kept eye contact with him for a few moments waiting for him to impart some kind of insightful wisdom upon her.  When he held silent and let her make her own decision, she whimpered and looked away.  âWhat if it isnât him I cataclysm,â Plagg asked, flying between them.  âI could do it to his house instead⊠a few of his cars?  Rich people always have too many cars.â
Adrien grabbed him out of the air and shoved him in his pocket with an exasperated groan. Â But Marinette giggled again. Â When her laughter had settled, she took a deep breath and motioned toward her phone. Adrien smiled at her as he placed it in her hand. Â She took a deep breath and pulled out the paper M. Wayne had given her. Â She dialed one of the numbers before she could talk herself out of it, which knowing herself could happen if she was given more than a few seconds to think, and looked up to Adrien, letting his soft smile ground her. Â âM. Wayne? Itâs Marinette. Â Would you be free for dinner tonight?â

Miraculess Ladybug Salt AU: You Always Liked To Play With Fire ~ The Meeting
I have no idea how long I want this to be, but I doubt it will be too long, so maaaaybe 15 chapters? But Iâm super glad that this has gotten more attention than I thought it would have.
Might need to point out that I only said there werenât any Miraculous here, but heroes still exist, but they all hide their identities (from the public because I think itâs stupid for random civilians to know your identity) if they chose to or they only tell families.
This fanfic and its ideas were all made before season 4 came out, so if something doesnât add up please donât worry. That information wasnât available then, and unless it fits into my story or I like it, I wonât include it in my story. Also, that new Miraculous wiki can get lost, Iâm not putting any of that new information in here if they couldnât even put it in the show.
Word Count: 7661
Tags: @vixen-uchihaâ, if you wish to be tagged all you must do is say. Also, if you change your name please tell me, I donât want to leave you out since youâve asked to be tagged. Iâm very sorry if Iâve missed anyone.
Well, I hope youâll enjoy it.
Summary:
(Fire doesn't exactly have anything to do with this story I just really liked the title)
Note: This book contains OOC scenes of Miraculous Ladybug as well as a ton of salt, so if you don't like that stuff you may scroll past and have a nice day.
In a world with no Miraculous, no Hawkmoth and no Ladybug, how does our little heroine do?
Well, it usually would be hanging out with her friends, as any other teenager would do...
But, of course, this wasn't normal.
This was reality. It was cold, hard, and definitely not welcome.
So, when this girl wishes to have some kind of adventure in her boring, mundane life...
How long does it take for her to regret it?
Trigger Warning (If you believe there is absolutely anything in my works that can be classed as triggering please tell me and I will include it after the summery. All off my works are made with a keep reading so you should be able to see if there's anything in the warning before hand.)
Mentions of guns, poison and stitching flesh.
***
Beep⊠BeepâŠ
Alarms were annoying. Why had someone decided to invent a device that makes you feel guilty for sleeping in? Why not just be a gentle reminder in the form of a lullaby? Or a small caress of a hand brushing some hair, as you simply start to close your eyes, drifting of-
âMarinette youâll be late for school again!â
She groaned.
So that was why.
Getting dressed she sighed knowing what the day would hold. Glares, being alone, eat, hopefully become nothing but invisible and make sure to go unnoticed before rushing back home.
For the past three years, this is what would happen to her. This same boring, frighteningly normal routine.
And she hated it.
Not just for being alone, or all of the sadness she felt grow each day to a meter she wasnât sure what level she was on now but whatever. It wasnât going down any time soon.
No, what she hated the mostâŠ
Was the boredom.
Yes, her creativity streak could not be higher, she had been going through her sketchbooks so much she had to work longer hours at her bakery to afford them all, but her love for fashion just wasnât the same, she didnât feel any joy producing her work anymore. There wasnât anyone new to show it with.
She was just alone in her room, mountains of book piles covering every surface.
But she was bored in general. She wouldnât be able to place the feeling, or even be able to describe what it was. But for whatever reason, she craved for adventure, I mean sure she was safe here, and she didnât want to worry her Parents with this silly idea of hers. But she just wanted a tiny little taste of some venture.
So why couldnât she?
âDid you hear?â Marinette heard the whispers, walking up to her classroom door she could hear what they were talking about, over the years she had become silent, become part of the crowd, it was so much easier to eavesdrop, although it was a bad habit of hers, she couldnât help it.
For example, she heard about Adrienâs relationships.
Now donât start getting worried, she was 100% over the boy. She would under no circumstances ever fall for someone like him, or even make such a god-like illusion of someone ever again.
But she heard how, the first day Lila came, and their kiss they shared. He really had meant to pull away.
Because he was starting to see Kagami.
But, his feelings became conflicted.
And he didnât want to hurt Kagami, so he simply never told her.
But then he never told Lila to stop with all of her advances, and Alya had tried numerous times to set them up.
Again, Adrien never said for them to stop, instead went along with it. He never told them he was with Kagami, and Marinette couldnât help but feel so sorry for the girl.
She learnt from hearing Adrienâs conversation he was her first friend, and she wanted to keep hold of that fact.
Just like her.
Except, the bluenette was able to escape that motion before she was sucked in too far.
She wouldâve warned Kagami, donât get her wrong. But Marinette wouldnât lie. She was intimidated by the girl.
Every time she saw her, she would glare all the time. It just reminded her of everyone else, and she couldnât go through with it.
Pathetic she thought bitterly.
But still. If she had confessed to Adrien, and then Lila came. Would he have told her about that kiss?
.
Well, er- Besides that, she had a knack for hearing other things too, for example, footsteps, she was able to tell whoâs were whoâs just by the sound. Some were light like Roseâs and Julekaâs. Some were heavy like Ivanâs and Mr Damocles. Some were sneaky like ChloĂ©âs and Lilaâs.
And she had to learn to avoid interactions with anyone she knew would make a fuss.
It became easy after a while.
Opening the door, she quickly scanned the class, they were all there, usual spots an all.
Around Lilaâs desk.
Oh well.
It would be less likely they would notice her.
She was, fortunately, able to get to her seat without any interruptions.
âA hero is coming to Paris, to help all of the Parisians out. Isnât that amazing?â
âReally, thatâs so cool. I wonder what theyâll be like?â
âOh, I sure hope heâs strong. Hey, do you think itâll be Eostrix Or Sparrow?â
âAnd why exactly do you think itâll be Eostrix? What about Medusa. Or-â Alya gasps, excitement seeping out of her.
âWhat if itâs Nebula?!â
âNu-uh, itâs definitely Eostrixâ
âNo way Nebula all the wayâ
âEostrixâ
âNebulaâ
âEostrix!â
âNebula!â
âEOSTRIX!â
âNEBULA!â
âBATMAN!!â The once quiet Rose belted out, before covering her hands in astonishment.
âSorry I wanted to join in.â She gave a sheepish smile as Juleka pattered her head.
Marinette breathed a sigh of relief, they would always get loud but today mustâve been special.
She looked out the window. A superhero Ey? Coming to Paris? How exciting. She knew she would never get the chance to meet them in person, what with her not so chaotic schedule. But she would love nothing more than to thank them for all they had done, for even volunteering to come here and help.
If she was brave enough, she would love to bake something for them, as a token of appreciation for their work. Maybe even make an outfit inspired by them-
Wait- that wouldnât be considered creepy, right?
She tried to work on that, with her attachment issues. But she was trying, with no friends at least, she wasnât sure if it had worked. No one could see her progress without any other remarks.
âYou shouldnât work yourself up so much, besides thereâs going to be an announcement in 2 hours, weâll just see it at break.â Alix laid back in her seat, Marinette couldnât tell if she had finally realised the truth but was just drowning it out or just grew bored.
But she hadnât made any type of engagement with her.
Oh well, I guess she was done with hoping.
But it wouldnât matter, Mlle Bustier came in clapping her hands to gain the classes attention.
âNow now, please return to your seats, I have a very special announcement to sayâ Please donât let it be another pop quiz. It was bad enough when someone would glance her way in general. Not when her test score would be one of the highest.
âAs you know, this small, lovely class has been so pleasant these past few years. Our own tight little nest, and I couldnât be prouder of⊠All of youâ Marinette saw the little glance she made, whatever she thought. It was all lies anyway.
âBut, we will have to make another new addition to this classâ A laugh was heard.
âWell, I for one hope theyâll be better than the last bunch⊠Except for you Adrikinsâ The others glared at her as Adrien looked away, not wanting to get involved.
If there was one thing Marinette could commend ChloĂ© for, it was the fact she saw through Lilaâs lies with ease. Having Sabrina by her side did make it easier, but she saw through none the less.
She didnât care that everyone else believed her little tales, ChloĂ© thought it was funny, and loved the idea of their reactions when they would inevitably freak out and cry.
She just had to be patient.
Plus, there was no way she would feel pity for Marinette. In this world, its use or be used. And like hell sheâll be used. She just had to see for herself.
âChloĂ© please, thatâs no way to make a first impression. Ahem, excuse me, you may come in now!â
âOk~,â A singsong voice said.
If Marinette had been paying attention, she wouldâve noticed the newcomer walk in. She wore a long-sleeved unbuttoned cardigan with a t-shirt underneath and a knee-high length skirt. A scarf was tied around her neck, matching her attire and small petite shoes.
She wouldâve noticed the pretty little bows in her hair. The pigtailed braids, all going down to her waist, showing off how long it still was even tied up. Little earrings so small worn, a detail many wouldnât have noticed.
She wouldâve noticed the little introduction she did to the whole class, and how it seems she brightened up the whole room. Or the smile she sent their way, not for one but for all. And how a blond boy blushed from it.
But more importantly, she wouldâve noticed, or at least heard her name being called out multiple times.
âMarinette, please pay attention for once, I swear your behaviour has gotten worseâ She wanted to shrink, now she made a fool out of herself in front of the new girl.
âIâm very sorry about that, that was very rude of her, I do hope youâll forgive the situation, the only available seat is at the backâ Great, now she will hate her.
âThatâs alright, I love sitting at the back, that way, I can see everyone and know theyâre okâ Hearts stopped, and smiles grew, she really was just a sweet little child.
The bluenette, however, was dreading it. Now there would be another to hate her. And she seemed so innocent. It was only a matter of time before she would be corrupted as well.
Oh, the horror, she really didnât deserve it, but Lila would have her way, she always di-
âYouâre Marinette, right?â She jumped, forgetting she had just been in her own little world again, staring off into space. She really needed to stop that.
âErr y-yeah, and you are?â She cursed herself for not paying attention, now she may just think she was an ignorant stupid-
âMy name is Rosaniline Keyne-Hill, but everyone calls me Rosann, itâs a pleasure to meet you Mariâ She giggled as Marinette stared back.
Mari? No one had called her that before. But she liked it.
âYeah, sameâ
And it felt like something else.
Maybe⊠Hope?
âŠ
She shouldnât be so optimistic.
***
Trying to eat in peace was a nightmare. There werenât many places where she could go to without being in trouble. The library prohibited any foods due to not wanting any books to be damaged, you werenât allowed to eat in a classroom without a teacher present, and considering all of the teachers chose to eat in the staff room she wouldnât be able to sneak into any room. The art club, again didnât want to damage any works, not after ChloĂ© âaccidentallyâ spilt her drink all over Nathanielâs sketchbook four years ago. He refused to go to school for a week. And the roof was out of the question, too unsafe and a risk if anything were to happen.
But Marinette, since itâs lunch, couldnât you go eat at home? Why yes, she could, at least two times a week she would just go back and stay at home to eat, but she felt as if she couldnât always retreat home just for convenience, besides, Mlle Bustier would sometimes tell her to eat in the cafeteria with the others instead of hiding herself away. If she tried going to her Parents when told to stay, sheâd be given warnings that soon turned to detentions.
Even if at times she wished to just sneak away, she couldnât, she didnât want her Parents to be called in and get wind of any other situations.
Marinette sighed as she played with her food, boredom crept on her face before she tuned into that hero announcement appearing on Face To Face.
Despite everyone trying to shove it down the schoolâs throat, she was ever so slightly curious about it. She may not have been able to voice her opinions to anyone in particular but she just wants to see who this mystery hero was.
Her pink earbuds at the ready and plugged in, she waited until Nadja Chamackâs report would come in, eerily, the whole cafeteria was quiet, the suspense was enough to put anyone silent.
Then, the logo came on, the sound resonated throughout the room since it was on the TV but Marinette stuck to her phone, she didnât want anyone catching her watching it.
âDonât be bemused, itâs just the news. Now a new rumour has been circulating throughout Paris about a new superhero appearing to protect the civilians. Iâm sure youâre all dying to know just how true it is. Well, I can assure you that only the best reporter in Paris would only speak of the truth, considering I have the key to answer all your questions.â Lights appeared behind her, all moving in different directions before centring on a doorway in the centre of the stage.
âIâm confident youâre very excited to find out who our mysterious hero is, so without further ado, letâs see who it is.â People began to hold their breaths, the excitement of who this bigshot would be, Nebula, Eostrix, or someone even bigger, they didnât know, but you could hear a pin drop in that cafeteria with how silent it was.
From behind the curtain, there were ruffles, smoke emerged to give off a more dramatic flair as the crowds became excited.
.
.
*A turquoise and light emerald outfit came into view. Baggy clothing on her arms and legs appeared along with white high boots. Her main outfit seemed to reside a sweetheart neckline dress with a mini skirt, although Marinette noticed it gave the girl some mobility to move around instead of being restricting. She also noticed the slight cold colours centring around her skirt, since she always had a keen eye on different types of design patterns. Light blue overlayers obscured most of the skirts view with golden rims on the bottom.
She had a light blue neck jewel, although she couldnât see much off it, sheâd have to admit. Her mask was a gradient of turquoise to match her dress, her hair was tied up in two twin buns, two red hairpins also there she noticed, but the rest left down, Marinette had to wonder how long it wouldâve been all down.
There were a lot of things Marinette noticed, however, one thing everyone could agree onâŠ
Was that they had no idea who she was.
âSalutations everyone, why itâs a pleasure to be here.â Marinette had to admit, she looked⊠Kinda young to be a superhero. And maybe, just maybe, not what sheâd envisioned when sheâd heard about a hero coming to Paris. Why, she was making an assumption, and she should really know better than to do that since, yâknow, but you couldnât blame her right?
âWHAT? WHO THE HELL IS THAT?â She heard over the other side of the dining room. Of course, it was Alya, she never could control her voice volume. But she couldnât tell if the ombre girl was upset over it not being Nebula or supposedly getting hyped up for a hero none of them had ever heard off.
Looking back at the screen, she could tell the news reporters seemed a bit taken back as well, Nadja never was good at concealing her emotions, even on air, maybe they had been promised someone else instead?
âO-Oh, I see. Well, I-â Her recovery was the same, Nadja always fretted she had to rely on the people up in management to give her a line if she couldnât think off one herself, she wasnât very good at improv either.
The heroine smiled before walking down to sit beside Nadja.
âI understand the scepticism, my appearance deters most, but that is just a ploy, however, Iâm here to make a promise to all off Paris. My name is Soliane Rin and Iâm here to risk my life for everyone in Paris, with or without my mask on. All I ask is to be given a chance.â She bowed to the camera, to all off Paris, and Marinette was able to see her smile, her truthful words as the whole dining room stayed silent at her speech.
Marinette seemed to feelâŠ
Hope?
âAh- no it wasnât that, itâs just we were given information you were appointed by both Eostrix and Nebula? How? I mean, how did you meet them, or more importantly how did you get to have this opportunity?â She smiled as Nadja had time to recover from her obvious disappointment.
âOh that, well I had worked with them on a few cases in New York. I had trained for a few years to be just like that until I was finally able to convince them to train me fully. And well I guess they believed I was ready to protect this jurisdiction by myself over time.â Nadja nodded along, seemingly more at ease as the time passed by, more questions being asked and answered before everyone had noticed how much time had passed.
A beep emitted from the girlâs necklace, in turn making her stand up and bowing or at least curtsying once more.
âIâm sorry for the early interruption, but I must be going now, I have some business to attend tooâ She threw a peace sign as a puff of smoke surrounded her. When it had passed so had she disappeared. As the crew tried to cover from most of their unscripted events. Nadja headed to commercials.
The long-awaited announcement was over, what would the audienceâs reactions be like?
âReally? We get a new hero like her? Iâve never even heard of Soliane Rin. Ugh, we might as well have gotten someone like Doormanâ Kim flung his arms up into the air before sitting back into his chair.
Not good apparently.
âI know right, and to think I was excited for thisâ Alya dramatically fell back into her seat. And she was so looking forward to this news as well.
Marinette would admit to feeling more guilt, she may have⊠Possibly thought the same, but even still, weâre judging a book by its cover, surely, they all shouldâve waited until maybe after she had proved herself.
Wait- making her have to prove herself was too judgemental still, she didnât mean for it to sound that bad, she just- she was just wrestling with the thoughts in her mind.
Not noticing the annoyed looks from the class, the tiniest blush from a blond, or the tiny smirk residing from a brunette.
With a plan in action, she set to work ravelling a new story that was sure to captivate her âfriendsâ. With a tremble of the lip and bowing her head, she waited until at least one person would notice her sudden change of expression.
Luckily, her plan went just as she thought.
âLila? Are you ok, whatâs wrong?â Rose, a sweet and naĂŻve girl mind you, immediately took the bait.
And with that, the others finally took notice of her, a new record she thought, after so long she was used to this routine.
She knew how to work them.
âOh- itâs nothing important, Iâm sure you wouldnât want to spoil the mood.â
Hook
âHey câmon girl, you can tell us. Whatâs on your mind?â Alya pats her shoulder to comfort the smaller girl.
Line
âAre you sure?â Lila asked again timidly, the other girl nodded, in fact, everyone did, and gave encouraging words to her, they couldnât see the smirk inside her mind.
And sinker.
She fiddled with a piece off her skirt, a habit she formed when noticing they were always a lot more concerned when she fidgeted, it was a clever trick really. Being able to get anyone wrapped around her finger was a power she loved.
âWell, I just think itâs a bit sad really.â
âWhat was?â Someone asked, at times she didnât really care who it was that responded, she just knew what the next response would be, she could always make them say what she wanted without them ever knowingâŠ
Oh, she loved this life.
âIt was meant to be a surprise.â She rambled on, waiting for someone to stop her, they had to.
âLila, what are you talking about?â See, she knew how to play this game a thousand times over.
âWell⊠I wasnât really meant to tell anyone. But since all of you are my friends, and I know I could trust you with this, so I guess it's fine to say.â
Everyone around the table leaned in, intrigued by what she had to say. Lila took a deep breath in, bracing herself for the aftereffect of her words she knew would come.
âI knew it would happen, that no one would like her, but I had hoped and prayed that you all would, I guess I shouldâve asked for someone higher upâ It took a few seconds for those words to tick in the aspiring journalists head, but when they were finally processed, she nearly erupted. It was better to make them think of what she said instead of just outright saying it, decent off her to help their brains.
âWait- you- you were the one to suggest a hero to come to Paris!? OMG girl that is fantasticâ Lila gave a small smile as everyone then shouted the usual praise at her, she nodded along before turning her head down.
âBut- you all werenât happyâ They all felt guilty at that, maybe that was why Lila had been quiet the entire time while the news was on. She mustâve been checking for their expressions and yet they hurt her feelings instead.
âSorry- we mustâve just presumed it was gonna be Eostrix or Nebula, that morning probably messed with our responsesâ Alya laughed as she draped an arm around Lila.
But the âlieâ wouldnât end there.
âI see, I just thought she wouldâve wanted more recognition while being hereâ Out of nowhere she started crying more, everyone tried to comfort her, but it was no use.
âSheâs just such a nice person, and so kind. When I last met her, she was still in training and I promised I would promote her as much as I couldâ She sniffed as Rose handed her a tissue which she greedily took a hold of.
Before they could exclaim their surprise she immediately jumped right back into her story.
âI knew I shouldâve tried harder; I shouldâve gotten Nebula or Eostrix. Iâm sorry I ruined everyoneâs day. I- I shouldâve left my big mouth shut. Iâm sorry guysâ Their guilt immediately intensified.
Lila had done all of that for them, and they had quite easily tossed it aside without realising, how could they? And to one-off their best friends? Despicable, absolutely despicable.
Wait, why did that sound vaguely familiar?
Oh well, Lila was more important.
âLila noâ Alya cooed in a soft voice, feeling mostly responsible, hyping everyone else up and being one of the first ones to dismiss the new hero entirely. She tries to comfort Lila was the least she could do.
âItâs not your fault Lilaâ Her plan came together.
âOf course, not. We shouldnât have judged her so quicklyâ Just like all the others.
âWeâre sorry, so sorry Lila.â And she knew how to do it so efficiently.
âWe shouldnât have judged so quicklyâ Lilaâs smirk in her mind grew in size, they were so wrapped around her finger.
As Alya was happily explaining that she would be in fact honoured to create a blog about this new hero- she had forgotten her name, and would quite happily like to interview Lila as well to be able to learn anything else about the hero, a lone figure grew upset.
Lila had just created another lie, she was used to that, but for it to be about the new hero, couldnât Lila tell just how dangerous that could be? I mean sure, it would be great to actually be able to meet a hero, let alone be friends with one. But to publicly announce that? Was she crazy? Did she want a massive target on her back?
She could only hope no one would buy into that blog, as mean as it was, but she didnât want them to get physically hurt.
She could only hope that the new hero wouldnât care about fake news or blatant lies.
She truly could only hope.
.
As shoes tapped against the floor along the dining room, a new figure turned her head.
She had been walking around her new school, looking around for entrances, exits and just in general any hidden secrets. She had previously asked for a school plan from a teacher, but had been informed that her students would be more than happy to help her instead, and she neednât need some piece of paper. But that didnât suit her, so when she wasnât looking, she may have just acquired one anyway. She was quiet so she wouldnât have been caught.
Now she was walking through the dining hall, she had wanted to take in the cafeteria, just in case there were any rooms she had missed, until she heard footsteps approaching her.
âHey Rosaniline, come join us, we havenât seen you all lunch.â She knew sheâd have to concede, having analysed each person in her class, she knew, Alya, would not take no as an answer.
So, she flashed her innocent smile and nodded along, it may prove useful to study them further.
Her arm was grabbed before they walked over to a table full of people, so different from the other tables.
âSo, newbie where were you? You totally missed the special hero announcement.â Alix asked her, the others looked over to see her answer, if Rosaniline hadnât been used to having a crowd around her she believed she wouldâve been nervous as hell.
âI had taken the liberty off looking around the school, Iâm afraid I can get pretty lost in large places, I only wished to remember the layout beforehand.â She placed her hands together with a bright smile appearing. It was half a lie; she couldnât exactly state her true reason, now could she?
The ombre haired girl pulled a large smile onto her face. She was just like Adrien, new, polite and a literal ball of sunshine, she thought before sneakily looking over at the blond-haired person who hadnât said much, most probably due to his shy nature due to his upbringing.
She latched onto Adrienâs arm before practically flinging him towards Rosaniline.
She literally took falling for someone to a whole new level.
âWell looks like the two of you would get along swimminglyâ Her new ship was bound to sail, she could see it now, their immediate attraction for each other, the dates and interactions theyâll have before proclaiming their love in the rain, a sentimental scene in which sheâll be gladly recording while hiding behind a tree.
I mean who wouldnât just map out her new friends love life in a matter of minutes of knowing each other?
But⊠It may just become a crash course instead. They rubbed their heads simultaneously due to bumping into each other. However, one was ever so slightly overjoyed with being in such close proximity to her while the other would think that prank wasnât funny in the least.
Before any of the duo could express their annoyance/apologise and maybe a get together sometime, someone of course just had to interrupt the moment.
âOh, Rosaniline we need to apologise to youâ Rosann had expected the apology to come from Alya but it appeared that girl didnât know that she had done something wrong.
âWeâre so sorry that you have to sit next to herâ That caught Rosannâs attention, what did they mean by that? They mustâve noticed her confused face as the explained further.
âOh, you poor thing, you really donât know do you?â Well, no. That is what she wanted to say, she was new, of course she wouldnât know, hell she hadnât even been able to see the whole layout as she had planned to. She was sure there was a hidden basement somewhere, she just needed to locate it.
âThat girl, the one you have to sit next to in class. The one with dark blue hair?â They all tried to provide as many details as they could without trying to make it too obvious, but Rosann was able to make out who exactly they were talking about.
She took a sneaky glance towards the person the group had started to talk about. She heard a few words of bullying, mean, lies and stalker before zoning it out, she needed to concentrate.
The girl, in a pink jacket and a grey skirt. Sitting alone on a table that seemed to be mocking her by how big it was. All of the tables were big, possibly to do with teachers wanting students to sit with their friends.
But she wasnât with anyone, she just absentmindedly played with her food as nothing interesting happened.
Rosann stared, that girl, she hadnât seen her smile once, or even display any kind of positive emotion. She was just lonely; couldnât they see that?
That girl needed to be saved!
***
Midnight.
Or at least close to that time she thought.
She didnât know, she had spent many a night out on her balcony just sketching in her book. One would think it wouldâve been too cold but the bluenette didnât mind, she had been used to it, the wind wasnât particularly chilly out here, even if it was late September. This was part of her routine anyway. Staying up late was just something she was used to, her sleeping schedule was the worse. But she produced so many fantastic ideas when she was awake at night, it was a sacrifice she was willing to take.
With her earbuds plugged in, she was jolted out of her streak when she heard a different notification pop up, pulling out her phone she looked at what couldâve possibly caused it.
[BREAKING NEWS: New Hero Prevents Bank Robbery On First Day.]
Marinette smiled at that. Her first achievement, in Paris of course, she knew she had done a lot before, she had checked a few articles before, although she did have to rely on google translate on a few instances, but this hadnât been the only thing she had prevented. There had been house fires to museum robberies to even outright terrorist attacks, and yet she was able to stop them all, she did have some help but from what Marinette could make out the other heroes got there after taking most of the civilians out of the buildings, and from what she could tell, she couldâve easily handled everything herself.
She could see Soliane didnât need to prove herself to others if she was just given a chance for everyone to see what she could do.
To not be judged based on baseless accusations tossed her way. For people to look through and see the truth!
.
.
She didnât know who that had been aimed at, but she knew she just wanted to get back to her sketching.
But⊠She couldnât.
Not now.
Not when she heard a noise behind where she had been sitting!
She quickly dropped her belongings as she jumped up from her chair.
-
Nothing seemed out of the ordinary, but she knew she had heard something, it wasnât just her hearing she knows that.
She knew something had happened; something was there. When she stayed put, trying to concentrate more- she heard slight breathing, slow and- hurting!?
She didnât know who it was, she didnât know their intentions or they alliance, but, if something was hurt, she wouldnât be able to live with herself if she didnât check it out.
So, she quietly approached the wall, having to stand on the bricks on the side of the wall since she wasnât tall enough before pushing herself up.
!!!
âThatâs-!â
Even in the night she could see a prominent colour.
Turquoise!
âIt- no it canât be! Soliane Rin!â She whispered more to herself, but even still she couldnât comprehend how this could have happened.
Noises of pain interrupt her train of thought. She- she was hurt!
Her mind had taken action, and immediately propelled her forward, she couldnât leave someone out here in the middle of the night hurting, even if she was a hero, she was still human!
She ran towards her, instantly trying to ask if she was ok? Where was she hurt and if she can respond?
But nothing came, no answer, nada. She had to check if she was alright.
She came closer, forgetting about maybe not accidentally startling the young hero.
Her hand was caught midway to the hero, she gasped, her reflexes were still there. Her head was nonetheless limp and her left hand resting on her abdomen.
âW- who ar-â She grunted in pain again. Marinette shot forward to grab her before she could fall back.
âHey, m-my name is Marinette Dupain-Cheng, youâre on my roof right now. Please let me help youâ Through her strength, she opened one eye to look at her. And through her eyes, she could only see one thing.
Sincerity.
âRight- leg⊠antiâ Her breathing grew slower, as if she were falling unconscious, Marinette had no idea if it wouldâve been eternal.
But Marinette was able to determine what she had meant. Looking her over, she looked at her leg, her baggy clothes were slightly torn but that didnât matter now, slipping her hand inside, she hoped Soliane wouldnât mind her hand being cold, she tried searching for it, for her antidote.
Her fingertips tried reaching out until she felt smooth glass. Wrapping her fingers around and pulling it out she pulled it up for further inspection.
The writing around the glass wasnât in French unlucky for her, however, there were pictures, she had to quickly conclude this wouldâve been used for situations just like this.
The picture appeared to show that it should be drunken not spread on the wound, so she quickly unscrewed the cap. Looking back at the hero she could tell she had indeed turned paler, she wasnât faring so well, she knew she needed to do it quick.
Tilting her head back so she could pour it down her throat, she could only pray that she wasnât too late.
.
.
One minute.
.
.
Two minutes!
Why wasnât anything happening!?
Marinette had to take a deep breath, maybe it would need some time to take an effect.
In the meantime, maybe she could look her over to see if there were any other injuries. And then maybe go downstairs to collect some supplies. Living as a baker meant she knew her way around burns, scars and scratches, so they were always prepared with a medical box in the kitchen.
Looking at her over appeared to be the right choice in action. Her lower abdomen had been hit, Marinette reasoned with herself that must have been why she had yet taken her handoff.
But as Marinette covered her own mouth with her hand, she was a gasped at how much blood there was.
Now what? She couldnât tell her Parents, she loved them, she really did, but she knew how loud her Dad would get whenever he got happy, angry, or frightened, she knew it wouldnât be a smart choice, especially with how jumpy the hero was. Not like she couldnât blame her.
Then that would mean calling an ambulance might be out of the equation as well, plus the Soliane Rin may not want the publicity of her going to the hospital after only one day of patrolling. She knew if she had gotten cold feet or even hurt like this on her first day heroing theyâd be a high chance of her giving up.
Well⊠She was a seamstress.
She had been doing it for a very long time, so she knew the ins and outs of sewing.
But still⊠It could be extremely risky, and sheâd need to get consent first⊠But if she didnât wake up⊠And she knew how open wounds could be, how dangerous it could be if they didnât get any treatment, and how much trouble sheâd be in if she accidentally killed the hero when trying to help her.
.
WellâŠ
She had dreamed of some adventure in her lifeâŠ
And she got her wish.
***
Stitch⊠StitchâŠ
Flick-
âAhh!-â
âSo-sorryâ
Her prayers off Soliane Rin waking up were answered, after she had collected a few blankets, medical supplies, and a needle & thread, she had come back up.
Only to find Soliane on her balcony, if it wasnât for her shock, she knew she wouldâve screamed out zombie.
How she had the strength to get there she would never know, but she had to guess, heroes have all sorts of endurance.
She quickly sped to catch her. She did reprehend her of course; it was in her caring nature, so she just had to.
But⊠The way she weakly smiled at her, she couldnât help feeling guilty, she probably was in so much pain and here she was berating her for- for what exactly.
This was why they had all left her. She was too quick to jump the gun, to jump to conclusions, too fast to even see from anyone elseâs perspective.
Which is why she was a perfect target.
She lowered her onto her bed, careful not to hurt her anymore. Setting her down so she wouldâve been comfortable, lots of pillows to help as well, she was glad she brought so many in her childhood. Or whenever her Nonna would come, sheâd always get a new toy from her travels.
And that was when she set to work, conversing with her about what she may have to do, and as hesitant as Soliane was, she also knew there was no choice.
âFine, Iâll trust you Marinetteâ Those words felt like a gift, in any other situation she would have been jumping for joy, getting acknowledged by a hero? That was amazing.
But- she really couldnât celebrate, the look in Soliane Rinâs eyes, the were⊠Fearful. She knew she wasnât trusted, yet. But she would prove it.
Snip, snip.
The room was silent, no words had been muttered or mentioned, Marinette was concentrating on her stitching, just hoping she wouldnât hurt her anymore. She must have regretted her decision now, of course, she had, anyone with the right of mind wouldâve. No wait- she didnât mean it like that! She just meant-
âItâs not your fault. I- shouldnât have let my guard downâ It became silent again, and this time Marinette had a lot more to think about. There had been one thing that was stuck on her mind and couldnât leave her mind.
âH-How did it happen?â She saw Soliane grab a nearby pillow even tighter than she had.
She knew she shouldâve kept her mouth shut! It wasnât her place to ask anyway.
Before she could utter any type of apology, she was stopped when she heard her start to speak.
âIt was right after one-off my patrol routes. I was surveying the city, just in case, I needed to report anything else. I guess- due to this being my first time alone, as well as having previously prevented some other crimes, I would have to say I wasnât in the same mindset.â Marinette stayed quiet so she could continue without pressure, she knew from personal experience how frustrating it could be to start talking and get interrupted by someone else, it was always a pet peeve of hers, making her not wanting to finish her story out of pettiness.
âSo⊠When I was too busy with moving around on my wire. I was shot!â Marinette jolted away, she knew something drastic had to have happened, and she had tried to brace herself. But she couldnât, it sounded so surreal.
âI was careless, it was such a stupid mistake, no novice wouldâve been hurt like meâ Marinette jumped again, she was so serious, and so⊠Angry with herself. But, she had just saved a bank from robbers, of course, she couldâve been tired, she was human after all.
âAnd due to my shock, I wasnât able to pinpoint who it had been. A poisoned bullet had just barely scared me, and I was still affected by it⊠Sir would be so disappointed in me.â
The last stitch had been completed. She was done, now she just had to bandage it. She noticed Soliane seemed physically more relaxed.
âI should be going now, Iâve troubled you too muchâ She was trying to get up, but even the bluenette knew she would still be in pain for a while, just until she would get herself checked out, probably as her civilian self.
âNo, youâre still hurt. If you move too early the stitches might come undoneâ She laid a gentle hand on her, just enough to draw attention to herself.
âBut I must, I need to report back, besides, donât you need to go to sleep?â Yeah but- the words paused in her throat, why could she say anything?
âYouâve already helped me so much, surely youâd prefer me to leave, it would be unbefitting for a hero to be seen so helpless for so long?â She saw it, her face, it was just like her a complete replica, always so helpful, to never think about yourself even when it could be life or death.
âŠOk maybe that last part was a bit extreme.
âHey, donât try to suggest that, I could never think that! You still need help, just because youâre a hero doesnât mean you canât rely on anyone else.â
âŠMaybe it was her stubborn side, or even her Motherâs. But she couldnât even think of the hero going out in that condition.
Grabbing her hand, she was adamant about letting Soliane Rin stay. So, she just told her.
Told her that she canât just go out in that condition.
Told her that she needed to get better, because if she was still hurt, how could she save other people. And how she also needs to look after herself.
Told her that⊠She shouldnât have so many expectations of her, because it wonât do her any good, mentality wise⊠And if the expectations become broken, sheâd be unrightfully angry at herself.
Told her that- oh god she was arguing with a hero in her bedroom and she wasnât saying anything.
She wasnât saying anything! Sheâs just standing there looking at her. Never had Marinette wanted to crawl into a hole and never come out?
âI-Iâm sorry, I should have never shouted like that, you were just doing your job and here I come saying you need to stop- wait not to stop I meant maybe slow down, although if you wanted to carry on then thatâs fine by me. What am I saying you donât need my permission; you donât need anyone's! Do you-?â Her hands had been waving in front of her frantically. She just couldnât imagine all of this wouldâve been happening to her, her emotions were spreading out of control. She really needed to compose herself.
-
Wait, why did she grab her hand?
âI -ahem- it's fine, Iâm incredibly humbled by your generosity. You have a big heart, not many have such kindness like youâ She brought her hand closer to her mouth, and the blue-haired girlsâ heart was pounding more and more.
âI shall stayâ She pressed the hand to her mouth, a small feeling off lips against her skin sent shivers down her back while she held her gaze.
âSo long as mi Belle stays with meâ It took her a moment to compose herself. It took another to realise to she was talking about her⊠It to yet another to compose herself from that.
âSou yure- I mean you show- ah, Iâm mean. Yes.â Marinette felt as if she couldnât say no, and yet, she didnât feel uncomfortable, she felt accommodated. She believed if she had said no, she wouldnât have felt pressured by the hero to stay.
And she smiled at that.
They both had.
So sincere.
***
The morning had come.
And not a moment too soon.
Light poured through her drawn curtains, and her first reaction was to grab the closest thing to plummet it towards the sun.
Not like that wouldâve done anything mind you. It wouldâve just been to make her point.
Rising up and stretching her arms, she headed down her steps, it had been a weekend, after all, she was allowed a lie in occasionally.
Although, she felt oddly a lot more refreshed than she had remembered, what had change-
Soliane Rin!?
Her head zoomed around the room, where- where was she?
No one was in the room besides her.
So- was it just a dream? Did she really see just imagine it all?
But she couldnât have, wouldnât that have just been too cruel, even for her?
Did the gods really hate her as well?
Wait-
That piece of paper wasnât there before?
Stepping over to her desk, she gently picks it up, almost afraid sheâd rip it up.
As her eyes traced over the first words, her mind relaxed.
âDear mi Belle, apologise for âdropping in unannouncedâ and to cause you such trouble. Donât worry, Iâll be fine thanks to you, Iâll promise to be more careful next time, sincerely your local hero, Soliane RinâŠâ
Her heart fluttered in gratitude; those events were real. She really did meet her.
As her hands curled around the letter, she smiled. A true sincere smile.
Because after so long, she feltâŠ
Hope.

*I absolutely suck at describing clothes, which is why I much prefer to draw instead, I literally have no idea what some clothes types are called so I always end up having to ask my Mum and even then, she doesnât know half the time so I may end up not describing much clothing in the future so sorry.
Well, I hope you liked it, I do believe these chapters are gonna end up getting longer and longer. I know a few of them are but hopefully, you wonât mind that. It will just make my progress slow but hey I was always slow so it shouldnât matter too much right? Anyway, well Marinette has met the hero and classmate, sheâs definitely different to my other version. But I do hope you like both versions.
Oh, and I may need help with Jess/Jace. I know that sheâs Native American, but Iâm unsure if thereâs any type of detail I must include for them, for example, Iâm aware that they donât cut their hair for symbolic reasons? Iâm not even wholeheartedly sure about that. So, I would like to ask if thereâs any information that Iâm forgetting/missing and I would love to be informed, aka if I need to include a tribe, any type of clothing that would be appropriate to wear or activities they do. Sorry if it seems stupid, I just want to be informed and try my best to make an accurate representation. You can ask me questions, but I will apologise if I donât understand them in advance. (Just so you know, Iâm changing everyoneâs design but Iâm definitely changing her earrings, I just keep having images of someone pulling them out ugh, hence why Iâll never draw large earrings that people could grab)
Also, if youâre confused about anything feel free to ask any questions.
Cya next time.
Note: Please tell me if I should add anything else to the card, there will be one of these cards for all 15 chapters, however, because I have uni work all updates will be slower because I really need to focus on the uni stuff, then I might be able to upload quicker. They also may change in the future because I can never stop adding stuff.

LadyNoir July 2021 Day 15: Forbidden
Read on AO3
A/N:Â Was I expecting to write an enemies to lovers AU? No. Did I panic and not get to the lovers part? Possibly. Stay tuned for either a future fic or a future day this month (Hello secrets!) for a continuation because who doesnât love enemies to lovers?
When sheâd first gotten her miraculous, Tikki had told her that Ladybug was supposed to be part of a pair, that she had a partner out there.
She still remembered coming home after that first fight, seeing the look on Tikkiâs face and knowing the black cat sheâd gone up against was supposed to be on her side
Every time she faced him a voice whispered in the back of her mind, âdoes he know?â
Ladybug knew it didnât matter, but she still found herself wondering. What if it was different? What if we fought by her side, joining her in stopping akumas, working together against Hawkmoth?
She was relaxing in the shadow of a beam on the Eiffel Tower one evening when he found her. Ladybug had thought there would be no harm in taking a break during patrol, but her luck seemed to be saved for akuma battes.
Jumping to her feet, one hand on her yo-yo, Ladybug prepared herself for a fight, bracing for him to throw the first punch. Sheâd found it hard to fight him, to start their fights, knowing he was supposed to be her teammate.
âRelax, Bug,â Chat Noir laughed at her. âIâm not here to fight you, at least not tonight.â
She frowned at him, untrusting of his words.
âI usually come up here at night. Something about the lights, it calls me.â Ladybug wasnât sure what the joke was, but he laughed quietly at something heâd said.
She crossed her arms, finally annoyed at his appearance. âSo, what? Iâm supposed to leave, even though I was here first, so you can what? Howl at the moon?â
Mimicking her stance, Chat Noir raised an eyebrow. âReally, howl at the moon? My other half canât even come up with a proper cat joke?â
Her blood ran cold. So he did know. Not that it changed anything, apparently.
She stiffened as he moved, raising his hands in surrender.
âBut I get it, Iâll let you have your space. Maybe in the future we can make a schedule. On Tuesdays you can have the tower, and on Thursdays I can. Something simple for you to follow.â
âAnd what if I want Thursdays too?â She didnât know why she was responding, going along with his teasing.
âWhy, Mlady,â he grinned at her as she bristled at the pet name. âI guess thatâs what making a schedule is for.â
With that, he saluted and jumped off, his baton already extending underneath him.
She tried not to think about the fact that it was the longest conversation sheâd ever had with him.
~~~
The small bell at the entrance to her shop jingled, and Marinette looked up in time to see Adrien holding up two cups of coffee. She smiled and waved him over behind the counter as she cleaned up her clutter.
âWhy hello there. I thought you were doing a photoshoot for the next,â she checked her phone, âhour.â
âWell, Vincent said I was too much of a âdeflated lasagnaâ and sent me on my way. So I figured, what better way to spend my new free time than with my favorite person and her favorite coffee?â
Marinette snorted imagining Vincentâs remarks as she took a sip. Her boyfriend didnât always have a lot of free time in her schedule, so she appreciated any opportunity she got to see him during the day.
Of course, it never felt long enough.
The couple jumped as their phones went off, and she sighed at the alert.
âOh, I need to get home, you know my dad-â Adrien started heading out the door.
âYeah, I should close the store and try to pull in some people to get them off the streets,â Marinette nodded, headed towards the back door of the store.
She turned as he slipped outside, Tikki floating infront of her. Calling her transformation, Ladybug raced outside.
She knew it wasnât fair to be frustrated at people who were akumatized, but did Hawkmoth really need to target people during the only time she got with Adrien today?
âWhy, Mlady! Long time no see!â
Ladybug groaned. Of course heâd be enthusiastic about this. He probably sat around planning how to get in her way, how to ruin her day.
She twirled her yo-yo, searching for the Akuma. Maybe today would be quick, maybe she could avoid going toe-to-toe with the cat for once.
~~~
Marinette grumbled as she slipped into bed. Adrien had gotten up early for that photoshoot and would probably be exhausted from his day, and the akuma battle had lasted far longer than it should have. Instead of a nice evening cuddled on the couch with a movie, sheâd have to have an early night.
At least they had a moment before the akuma this morning.
Rolling on to her side, Marinette hoped that maybe tomorrow would be better.
~~~
As her feet touched down, she realized her favorite vantage point was occupied.
âWhy, Bugaboo, if you wanted to see me so badly, you could have told me yesterday!â
She groaned, rubbing her face. âChat, why are you here?â
âI told you,â he tapped the beam next to him. âA schedule.â
Sure enough, taped with probably an impressive amount of tape, was a piece of paper with days of the week written on it. If she squinted, there was a small black cat drawn under âThursdayâ and a red circle under âTuesdayâ.
She turned to leave, but his voice stopped her.
âDoes it ever feel overwhelming? The double life?â His voice was quiet, and Ladybug couldnât figure out if he actually expected an answer.
She didnât realize she just had to wait.
âI get you donât want to answer me, identities and all, but you havenât pushed me off this ledge yet. I just -â Chat paused, and Ladybug saw his shoulders fall. âIâm not going to talk about it to him, and I feel like youâd get it.â
She stayed silent, not knowing how to respond.
âIâm sure you know we could have been partners, should have been a team. I think in another life, that would be nice. Freeing.â He whispered the last word, as though it wasnât meant for her.
He sighed. âIt would be nice to not feel so alone.â
Finally overwhelmed, Ladybug stepped back. Since sheâd arrived, Ladybug had felt like sheâd been intruding on a private moment, and this was too far.
âItâs never too late, Chat,â Ladybug whispered, stopping herself from reaching out. She didnât know if he was too far in his own thoughts to hear her. Throwing out her yo-yo, she turned to him. âFor now, Iâll just try to keep to the schedule.â
Something about what he said stuck with her, but she let herself get caught up in the swinging of her yo-yo to let it simmer.
~~~
Marinette didnât remember when it had gotten so hard. She knew Adrien was frustrated with how his father pushed him, all of these early morning photoshoots and late night events starting to run together, but heâd never taken it out on her like this.
She was exhausted, but it wasnât like Marinette could tell her boyfriend it was because Hawkmoth had increased his akumazations recently.
She missed when their time together was with giggled stories and warm cups of coffee, instead of fights and empty apologies for missed dates.
It felt like Marinette blinked and suddenly he was gone, his voice asking for some time apart echoing around her apartment, inescapable.
Tikkiâs soothing voice sounded miles away, and all Marinette hoped for was a reprieve from those poisonous butterflies.
~~~
He bared his teeth as he pushed the baton against her, pinning her down. He wasnât usually so physical, preferring to let the akuma do most of the work, but today something was off.
There was a feral look in his eyes, and a ghosting of purple and black near the bottom of his mask.
Taken aback, Ladybug thought through their recent interactions. No, she couldnât have caused that.
âMinou?â
He froze, tilting his head to the side. Had she said that out loud?
She didnât let the thought fester, already pushing off of him.
Slipping out from under him, Ladybug stood up, already planning her next step to get past him, to purify the akuma.
~~~
This time, when he joined her at the Eiffel tower, she offered him a croissant. Her parents had insisted on giving her a box of pastries, and with no Adrien to share them with, she didnât know what else to do with them.
Chat quietly took her peace offering, sitting against the beams, watching her.
Brushing crumbs off her, Ladybug tried to bite back a sigh.
âSometimes I wish it was different.â She couldnât bear to look at him, to watch the surprise cross his face. âWe couldâve been partners, but instead this city expeccts me to protect it. Sometimes I just want to stay home, hide out in my room.â
She finally looked over at him, but he wouldnât meet her eye.
âSometimes I wish we were partners, but most of the time I just wish things were normal. I mean,â she rubbed her face, willing herself not to cry. âI couldnât even take a couple of days to be sad about my relationship ending.â
âI didnât know you were in a relationship.â
âWell, Iâm not. Not anymore.â
âOh.â
They sat in silence for a minute, and she worried sheâd said too much. Paired miraculous or not, he was still her enemy. Although up here, with the iron structure and the stars to keep them company, she wasnât sure that was true. Like sheâd somehow entered a truce with him, without even realizing it.
âLadybug.â
She turned to him, surprised at the use of her name.
âWhy did you call me that?â
She frowned, trying to figure out what he meant.
âDuring the last akuma, you called me Minou. Why?â
âIs that not what you are? A cat?â
âBut you called me a kitten.â
She tried to hide her grin. âYes, a big scary kitten.â She saw him frown and continued. I saw your face. I know I didnât give you that bruise, and I know the akumas usually leave you alone. I guess,â she sighed, deciding if it was worth admitting. âI guess I just realized youâre probably my age, that weâre too young to be doing this. Too young to have to grow up this fastâ
She looked over Paris, wondering if sheâd gone too far.
âIt was from my dad,â Chat whispered, and Ladybug ripped her eyes off the city to look at him. âHe was, ahem, less than pleased with my appearance, and wanted to make sure his frustration was noted.â
She frowned, trying to understand. âIs your appearance important?â He chuckled, and Ladybugâs eyes bulged as she realized what sheâd said. âNo, I mean, um, like, is your appearance part of your job or something? Why does he care?â
Chatâs eyes sparkled, like he was hiding another laugh in them. âSomething like that.â She watched as his hand reached up to rub the back of his neck. âCanât have less than perfect for the face of the company, even if my relationship had just ended. Canât have just one day to myself.â
âIâm sure heâd be thrilled to know youâre spending your night high on the Eiffel Tower with me, instead of sleeping.â Ladybug pushed away the sensation at the back of her mind, like there was something she should note, something important.
âI mean me? With Parisâs sweetheart? Iâm sure he couldnât be too upset.â
âIâm pretty sure Parisâs sweetheart is Adrien Agreste.â Ladybug motioned to a billboard in the distance.
âSure, Ladybug, if you think heâs a sweetheart,â he chuckled again, and Ladybug squinted, trying to figure out what was so funny.
She pulled out her yo-yo and startled at the time.
âOh, I didnât realize how late itâs gotten. I gotta go.â She stood, but turned to Chat. âThanks for tonight. I think I needed it.â
âMe too, Bugaboo. Me too.â Chat stretched out, making no move to follow her. âGet home safe bug.â
In another circumstance, it would be a threat. But tonight, high above the city, it was just a goodbye.
âYou too, Chat Noir.â She smiled at him one last time before swinging away, leaving her forbidden friendship behind her. At least for tonight.
