LEVERAGE SEASON 2 GRIFT TRACKER
I have learned how to edit a draft post! So this was much easier not having to do it all at once lol
No new jobs just clarifications added on the jobs list. I didn't attach the parameters/rules/notes I used to judge this cause Tara's graph put me at the 10 photo max. If you want to see the parameters they are on my Season 1 Grift Tracker post (idk how to link a post in yet)
Enjoy!
Fun Facts:
- Eliot won the most grifts
- the crew did 2 grifts where everyone played the same role this season
- Parker and Hardison grifted together a lot in the first half and Hardison and Eliot grifted a lot together in the second half
- grifting was calmer than first season people were trusting their character
- shit ton of Damsel grifts
S2E1 : Very few grifts. Nate did the whole con with just using his connection as Jimmy's kid and shockingly not doing anything wild
S2E2 : one of my fav episodes! I find Sophie's distrust and disgust of chicken fried steak hilarious 😂 I make it homemade like every month or so lol. Parker and Hardison have now done 3 grifts in a pair in a row
S2E3: This episode fucked me up when I first watched it. Crazed Maniac doesn't apply in this episode because they are going for faking an epidemic. Sophie broke her One Grift Per Episode Streak!
S2E4: one of my fave episodes. Nate's hair kills me. Parker and Hardison do 2 grifts together
S2E5: does it count as Hardison breaking his no Crazed Maniac grift streak for the season if he's playing a full blown tinfoil hat and not doing forthedrama? Also I am now thinking I should have been tracking faked deaths separately than Damsel
S2E6: Magicians fall under Actress. Love everyone trying to trade jobs and Eliot complaining that no one wants his
S2E7: I put the crew at "Sophie's" funeral as Actresses bc Sophie was being Katherine who was her alias for he Sound of Music actress and they were playing her friends. Just got to the end of the episode- why does it say Sophie on the headstone when the funeral was for Katherine?!?!
S2E8: well y'all we hit the point where my mom saw my excel on my laptop and asked what I was doing. It's official Hardison is back on his DraMA with The Iceman plus him taking credit for Parker's reputation
S2E9: well now I forgot to update this as I went 😅 oh well now we get this by memory. Tara has joined the crew and has gotten a page on my excel workbook. I love her intro
S2E10: it was awful trying to pay attention to the wildness on this one plus I fell asleep. Lol rewatched it and it went well 👍
S2E11: and Nate pretends to be his dad. This is the most notable Dopple grift this season, but there has been several
S2E12: Eliot and Tara making a man cave with no words lmao I put it down as Mob bc idk
S2E13: Tara is a good grifter and tends to keep with the character, also I agree with Parker that dude is awful
S2E14: Eliot plays baseball! Hardison has calmed down the word vomit grifts slightly but he definitely still has chaos as default tho
S2E15: great season finale! Parker hanging Tara off the building. Eliot counting down. Sophie coming back. Hardison committing to the grift
#leverage#grift tracker#grifters gonna grift#i didnt realize how long this was#this is long as fuck im sorry yall#i dont feel like i had this as accurate as season 1 but me and excel didnt throw hands this time#so thats an accomplishment

Spider Queen?!!
I've been rewatching LMK again for more research and I noticed something odd. It started in Season 1 in Noodles or Death.
These are some of the major issues I have with Spider Queen's Story we see in other episodes she debuted, especially in Revenge of the Spider Queen we have lines like.....
"Monkey King tore me from my throne and took everything I owned." She said to LBD in her host form.
"would be queen of spiders." From Bull King as he was tied up mocking her.
"after all I've won and lost and won again." She says as she threatens MK
In other episodes like 72 Transformations
"I was meant to rule, I would have been a good queen," she says more to herself than to MK
These lines all together tell me a story. I am not claiming at all that this is at all true. I am just saying it like I see it.
Her empire in the east doesn't necessarily mean this was her only empire. This could have been a part 2 of her empire of the west. After a defeat from Wukong, she tried to restart in the east. After a probably short rule was defeated again and those or the ruins of that empire.
The story doesn't end there with Bull King's comment of her being a would-be spider queen and her reaction to Wukong calling her princess. The fact that he uses the title princess to get under her skin says something like she wants the queen title but may have been only able to reach the princess statues. Says that perhaps officially she is not THE Spider Queen. In the JTTW she had sisters. Imagen will you, that after living with sisters and one or two of them being seen as more spider queen and you are only being seen as a spider princess. You want more power so you try to prove yourself as the rightful spider queen but as you are in the prime and are at the tip of the world your plans are foiled by the Monkey King. You are dethroned and shamed No longer able to raise your head high you look for a new start to prove others wrong that you can be a "good queen." So you travel far to the east where you hope no one has heard of your defeat. You find a wonderful spot by the coast to set up shop you enact your plane and after reviving your title as Spider Queen you are once again trampled and this time everything you worked for is plummeted into a sinkhole and then buried.
Now the one thing is the time frame of all this as seen in slide one we see modern people and in her lair in slide 2, there is modern or at least sub-modern piping in her lair. With all the webs it has not been touched in ages though and there are parts of modern above-ground plumbing down there like it was above ground when her empire went down as well as during their fight in Noodle or Death the crew fall deeper then Spider Queen's lair into more sewers that lead to the ocean.
That goes into part two of the theory. That her second rain and second defeat happened years ago just not in ancient China ago we see one man in a t-shirt and paint and one person had brown hair not black. That none of them had old hairstyles like we have seen before like in the pilot a hero is born. So the jab at Spider Queen from Bull King was about her first fall not her second because he would have been buried by then and it also means that her second defeat was not by Wukong but by someone else cause one again in A Hero is Born Wukong had not been seen since Bull King was sealed 500 years prior. You must be wondering who could have stopped her well here is a wild card just a major theory what about one of the dragon clan members one of Mei's ancestors not as ancient as Ao Lie or the dragon of the wasn't but her entire family even without the dragon blade have dragon powers that could have defeated her in a more modern aera.
That's that theory please leave your thoughts in the replies. Also, just as a side thought not a real theory, might make one later. LBD coffin and seal were found under the foundry under Megapolis like Spider Queen why was this Journey of the West character defeated state found in the far east. Perhaps after a smaller defeat in the west she came back for revenge and hunted him and the monk after the Journey to the homes both in the east and was stopped by them then. She was then buried and forgotten.
Please leave comments and your thought I would love to hear them. My brain hurts from all this. :)

Decided to rewatch OFMD S2 eps 1-3 and actually jot down my thoughts as I go! Oh what fun! Ngl this is mostly for me babes but if you enjoy it that's neat ❤️
Episode 1: Impossible Birds
Stede bearded in his dream could just be playing to swashbuckling archetypes for funsies, but is it some lingering wish that he was more masculine?
Con O'Neil truly graceful about it with the sword huh
"WHERE IS HE. WHERE'S ED?" Stede seeing Izzy as the thing that is keeping Ed from him when he's the one that left lol ok
His idealised version of Ed doesn't hold him accountable either. My mans doesn't want to face what he did at all!!
His first words to Ed in his letter are reassuring him that the crew are safe, as if he doesn't remember that Ed marooned them and left them for dead on purpose??
I know it's meant to be funny but Jackie was a bit of a sex pest toward Swede at first and the power dynamic was a bit 🫤 Glad he was into it in the end!
WHY DOES WEE JOHN SLAM THE HEAD OF THE ONE WHO GOT STABBED INTO THE TABLE INSTEAD OF THE ONE WHO STABBED THEM?? 😂
Stede truly is unphased by people being assholes to him and I just,,, respect it.
Ricky your vibes are strange and unsettling
Who in their right mind would have an ocean wedding in the golden age of piracy?? I know they probs didn't know it was the golden age of piracy while they were in it but STILL
Ed looks so dead behind the eyes 😭 Just going through the motions eh buddy?
Dressed up like the book Blackbeard I see. God he's trying so hard to inhabit this character.
I would die for Archie. Truly the himbo we need in these depressing angst riddled times.
Jim asking someone else how they're bottling things up?? Hello?? Who are you and what have you done with Jim?? Aren't you the bottling up Master? Olu bewitched you too good and now you've unlocked Feelings 😔
"He's actually a good guy" Stede babygirl did we actually forget the marooning???
I have so much I could say about how Izzy and Blackbeard's relationship has deteriorated hhhhh,,,, Izzy is a problem child but I'm so glad the story is crashing towards his character actually growing and changing. In season 1 he at least got the crumbs Ed would throw him like "I need you here", now he's only getting abuse and maybe he's throwing himself at it because he recognises he had a part to play in reaching this point and believes he deserves it.
Fang's delivery on "how you doing Izzy" will keep me warm and fed all winter. Masterclass in approaching someone, truly tender and genuine but not too pressuring. God.
That second "unhand me" hhh the panic of realising you're going to start crying if the situation continues
Con is gonna rip my heart out and eat it this season if I'm not careful
Labour exploitation Jackie what a girlboss x
Why does "you'll be having a lot of breakfastseses together" sound so ominous though 😭 Smeagol Jackie my worstie...
Stede doing Blackbeard Voice is adorable but damn he really doesn't believe that he made Ed's life better. Like how??? Why doesn't Stede equate happiness with better? Ed was explicitly happier around you ya dingus!
Swede deserves his married bliss so much. The crew can be so mean to him!!
"What am I to you" and "I have... love for you" are said so softly I'm gonna be sick,, Izzy you fucked it by wrestling this man into this particular coping mechanism and your tenderness is coming wayyyy too late. Heartbreaking tbh cause the guy didn't know how else to help Ed and now he's realising it could have been different. Sick and twisted little dynamic I'm eating it like good soup.
Definitely supposed to be taken that Izzy didn't realise "talk it through" was a Stedeism as he said it but godddd you idiot dude
Once again god bless you Archie I'd die for you
Fang I want to rescue you hhhhhh my hot topic fashionista must be so dehydrated from all these tears!!!
No way in hell Ed expected anything else out of Izzy's mouth than something about Stede, but god I wish the guy had just payed attention to Frenchie shaking his head. The catharsis of saying the quiet part out loud wasn't worth your leg, man.
"Start by cleaning up that mess"... yeah we def see Ed is killing people himself again but outsourcing the Big Job on Izzy makes sense. He's also exactly the kind of self sabotager atm that would know Frenchie won't do it, and he's looking for reasons to Be Worse.
Indigo heist my beloved. Fuck those hammies up!! I love how loud Black Pete was omg 😂
Oh fuck off Ricky I know you're a S1 Stede mirror but you're doing it detestably
Roach why is your instinct to immediately put the blue dirt on your face darling
Zheng Yi Sao completely unphased by Jackie is giving me so much delight
Sexy Dutchman 😭😂 Jackie never change
I love that Zheng Yi Sao is taking the whole crew on just to have her lil Olu moment, get it girl
TENDER JIM IM SO HAPPY FOR THEM THEY'VE COME SO FAR. I LOVE THEIR BIG SMILE 😭 (also Archie is so wholesome what is she DOING here???)
Ed oh my god you're not alright at ALL
Frenchie's quiet "sounds like a plan" is just so... painful. The acting this season is off the charts.
When Roach asked if they were in soup now I thought he was referring to the ocean as soup I'm an idiot 😭

1x01 Rewatch Thoughts and Feelings
disclaimer I’m typing this all on my phone while I watch so if there’s spelling or grammar errors they can be added to my sin list for when i get judged at the pearly gates.
lets fly
-grace <3
-idk why i forgot that the show STARTS with the explosion and loss of old 126…
-judd <3
-salutes the fallen as they are still alive since i know this is a canon event and needs to happen for my comfort characters to come together
-oh FUCK i forgot how quick it happens and that Grace is on call WITH Judd AND hears the explosion happen like…. Ahhhhh.
-TK <3
-“i’m gonna ask alex to marry me tonight” canon event we can’t interfere canon event we can’t interfere canon event we can’t interfere-
-i would piss myself if i was ever hamging off the side of a skyscraper cause heights is my biggest fear lmfao
-“i say go for it” CANON EVENT WE CANT INTERFERE-
-I know I’m not free from clowning on Owen in recent episodes but Season 1 will always be my favorite of him. Seeing him here just reminds me how much I used to like his character.
-“my son’s getting engaged tonight will i make it to the wedding?” WELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL you see there’s a few things that have to happen first but TECHNICALLY-
-chief radford telling Owen to give him a call if he changes his mind is the real MVP
-TK BABY WAKE UP
-okay so the first time i watched this episode i was shellshocked by how much happened before the first commercial break?? A whole fire ladder crew is lost, someone is diagnosed with cancer, someone overdoses???? i was- ?????? And then i saw it. The sign i missed from the beginning. “produced by Ryan Murphy”. SONUVABITCH I SHOULD’VE KNOWN- (i was a glee kid)
-Owen and TK are such a good duo
-country music cause we’re in texas baybeeee yeehaw
-these two are so “new york” stepping out of this car it pains me
-tk is such a good person and so aware of other people’s needs it hurts so much how he (at this point) doesn’t put that same energy towards himself
-shakes ass to the music playing while we get our “Meet the 126” montage
-“i’m allergic to poor leadership” such a good line that does an amazing job setting up who Marjan is going to be for the whole series. -judd baby… </3
-this scene is so well acted I love it so so so much. Judd’s anger and Owen’s calm but cautious energy mesh so well.
-PS heehee you’re gonna be best frieeeeeends
-…..has owen’s house always been black wtf i always picture it white when im reading fics????? -i love this striped jacket tk is wearing where did it go did it survive the flames from season 2….
-oh god i just noticed hid pants show his ankles i hate that fashion trend so so somuch but im also 6’4” so maybe it’s because i was made fun of for my ankles showing when i was growing up LOL
-oh hey michelle hoe are you nice to see you
-liv is such a good actress i don’t care for michelle but i DO like liv this first scene is such a good introduction
-CARLOS <3
-i always love trying to figure out what the emergency is going to be when we’re clearly approaching one in a set up scene because most of the time it’s obvious but there are the few that come around and shellshock me lmfao
-Michelle and Owen as captains would have been a fun dynamic to explore as the show went on had liv stayed around. Even if I am a huge fan of Tommy and how they interact and respect each other.
-grace immediately calling judd on his bullshit is perfect and i love her for it so much. Another amazing introduction to a character. hell this whole pilot does the best job of introducing us to the cast in the first episode than i think a lot of shows (that i’ve at least seen) do so props to them!
-“the man i love has never taken no for an answer, so do not start now.” GRACE IS SOOOOOO GOOOOOOOD
-i forgot they start the skincare talk in the pilot i thought this was and episode 2 thing sfgfsgngn this feels so goofy to include in the pilot like it’s meant to be a major plot moving forward instead of just characterization
-“most people tend to tiptoe around me” paul… </3 I love him. -carlos just introduced himself to his future father in law and doesn’t know it yet hehehehehehehehehehe
-CARLOS AND TK JUST SPOKE TO THEIR FUTURE HUSBANDS FOR THE FIRST TIME AND DONT KNOW IT YET HEHEHEHEHEHEHEHE
-i love how tk starts the show off wanting to be exactly like his dad, or at least who he thinks his dad wants him to be, and evolves into his own person over time and is proud of that. I’m proud of that. -TELL HIM ABOUT THE- ugh. Canon event.
-“that’s him?” she had target locked and ready
-carlos nervously waiting for michelle to get everyone away so he can approach tk yeah yeah yeah
-“you wanna dance?” It beeeeginss!!!!!!
-grace being the best and approaching owen is my favorite scene in the pilot by far. ESPECIALLY on rewatch, knowing where the characters end up and all. -This second scene with owen and judd is definitely sceond place though, given how it seems like Judd messed this up again but Owen decides to give him a chance by telling him about his cancer and then acknowledging the memorial that was put up… and it works out for everyone because Judd ends up becoming the heart of the new 126. -holy hell i completely forgot that we meet the wife and daughter of one of the former 126 here….
-shakes ass to old town road while everyone montages their way through the end of the episode
-JUDD ON THE TRUCK YEEEEEEEEHAW
and that’s that. FUCK i love this show.

5.26 and 6.1 - Time’s Arrow
Oh my god. Y’all. It’s a new Fashion It So post. In the year of our Picard 2020. Yes.
For literal years, Charlie and I have been like UGH WE NEED TO DO TIME’S ARROW PARTS 1 AND 2 BUT IT’S JUST SUCH A MONSTER.
Well, I’m doing a complete rewatch of the series with my partner and we just got to these two, so IT IS TIME.
We open in a cave in San Francisco, where Data and Picard are checking something out:
Rent for the cave is $6,000 per month
Showing them around is this guy in a Science Outfit:
He’s ready to go night biking
We’ve seen this look before in both Silicon Avatar and Devil’s Due, and it’s functional, yet cute. Basically a windbreaker in jumpsuit form.
They find a couple of items in the cave, including a pocket watch from 1889 and also:
I left my head in San Francisco
IT’S DATA’S HEAD!!! And it’s been there for FIVE HUNDRED YEARS. What could have caused this? And why is Data’s head so absolutely terrifying?
Is that fondant
This head is, in a word, haunting. The 2020 of heads.
Data and Geordi chat in Ten-Forward about what the presence of Data’s head in the cave means. Data says it means he’s mortal; that someday he will die, and that’s comforting. Spoiler alert: that’s not what it means. But it’s a nice conversation.
Also, Guinan is here!!!
Merlot My God!!
Or maybe: Burgundy-lightful!! Or perhaps: De-Crimson-alize Sex Work!! Okay that last one was a stretch but I really think I missed my calling as a nail polish shade namer.
Anyway, she’s here in her classic look of a pizza-sized hat and a flowing gown/coat/top/robe. The collar here is a little too close to a mock turtleneck for my liking and honestly - this is a little staid for our friend Guinan. I want a TEXTURE or a SWEEP or some WIDE RIBBING or some PLEATS. Don’t worry, though...she will get plenty more later.
Then there’s some plot which frankly we DO NOT HAVE TIME to get into but let’s just say: the away team goes to a planet, there’s a temporal disturbance, and Data ends up here:
Huge mood
Where are we? Or should I say WHEN are we??
Well that old-timey font is a good clue...also the horse
Are we in the Old West land of an off-brand Disneyworld? Are we going to ride something called Large Lightning Mesa Train Tracks? What colorful characters will we meet here?
Winner of 1893’s Mustache Medal
This type of ‘stache is called a Fu Manchu, after the character Dr. Fu Manchu. It’s not...a great look? But it is memorable, which is sometimes enough. He’s also wearing a simple black cap, probably made of silk. He’s keeping it cazh.
So where are we?
SAN FRANCISCO, OPEN YOUR GOLDEN GATE / YOU’LL LET NOBODY WAIT / OUTSIDE YOUR DOOR
Yes, it’s San Francisco. And it’s *eyes popping out of head like a cartoon wolf seeing a busty babe* 1893!!!! That temporal disturbance was...disturbing.
So who else do we have hanging out?
Please check out our Vaudeville act, Knit Cap ‘n’ Bowly
These dudes understand those famous Bay Area MICROCLIMATES, amirite? We’ve got a Henley. We’ve got a buttondown. We’ve got a vest. We’ve got a coat. No matter which way the thermometer decides to go, THEY ARE READY. Also loving the pop of forest green on Knit Cap’s knit cap.
We also have a 49er:
No, it’s not Steve Young. I googled “famous 49ers” to complete this joke so if there is a more famous 49er please let me know
It’s a literal 49er. Since it’s 1893, this guy’s been hanging around in town for a while, and he’s also familiar with the layering techniques one must master if one is to conquer the Bay Area’s climate. He also has a kicky Colonel Sanders-type tie. He asks Data for money and gives him a few panhandling tips. He’s chill. We like him. But don’t get too attached if you know what I mean!!!!
Data decides he needs somewhere to stay, so he finds a hotel:
Brian.
Why is this so funny to me. Brian. Why would you name your hotel Brian. Brian!!!! I know it’s a last name but like...Brian. HOTEL BRIAN.
This bellhop’s name is not Brian:
Where’s your hat, bro
He’s giving us a classic bellhop look, complete with too many buttons. He gives Data the very important information that there’s a poker game happening in the back of the hotel, which means: Data is about to be RICH rich.
The poker game includes a few good looks:
Louie Anderson IS Wolverine IN a Lands’ End barn coat
Two plaids? Sir...I salute you
Colonel Sanders Goes to Carnaval
Data, of course, wipes the floor with them so hard that he wins their clothes:
Didn’t get that barn coat tho
Yes, that’s the actual vest and the actual hat of those guys from the previous scene. Oh, I love it. I love Data in a vest over his uniform and I love Data with a feather in his cap. Let’s call it macaroni.
Meanwhile, out on the street, the plot is happening:
Beige: inescapable
This is our first taste of the decadent 1890’s sleeves that appear in this episode, and these aren’t even the best sleeves!! These are an amuse-bouche of sleeves. An armuse-bouche, if you will.
Anyway, these two are aliens disguised as humans who are here to steal the 49er’s life energy.
Pew pew pew
I told you not to get attached!!!
Back on the Enterprise, Guinan is doing mixology:
She would never call it something as stupid as mixology though
She tells Picard that he needs to go check out the temporal disturbance, too, even though captains don’t normally go on away missions, and then she gives him this look:
It’s that serious
When Guinan looks at you like this, you do what she says.
Now this outfit is much better than the earlier one. We have some pleated sleeves, which I didn’t even think was a thing you could DO. We have some sort of functional(?) strap(??) across the front. We even have matching fingerless gloves which always make a look A LOOK. And if Picard wasn’t sure whether he needed to go on this away mission, she then gives him THIS look:
Okay now it’s REALLY serious
Back in 1893, Data is making something:
It’s actually just a really complicated and large music box that plays “I Left My Head in San Francisco”
He’s gotten his hands on some more period-appropriate clothing, including a bow tie and a vest. Since he’s not wearing arm garters and his sleeves appear to be the correct length for his arms, we can conclude that the shirt was custom-made, not ready-made, because Data is now a baller due to his poker earnings.
Then, Data sees this in the paper:
I know her!! From work!!!!
Yes, it’s Guinan. In 1893. In a hat!!!!
We cut to the literary reception, which is honestly not as well-attended as I thought it would be, considering it got a GIANT photo of Guinan on page THREE of the paper, but okay. And who should we spy there but:
You’ll love my secret blend of 11 herbs and spices
No, it’s not Colonel Sanders. (Sorry, I really have Colonel Sanders on the brain because of that Lifetime movie.) It’s Samuel Clements, AKA Mark Twain. I had an English teacher in high school who explained the origin of his pseudonym (it indicates a mark of two fathoms, aka twelve feet, on a steamboat) and for some reason she shouted MAAAARK TWAAAAAIN when she told us that story so now her delivery of that line is in my head until I die I guess.
Anyway, it’s Mark Twain.
He’s wearing his iconic white linen suit with a black bow tie, and he’s also wearing a lot of prosthetics, because the actor playing him (Jerry Hardin, AKA Deep Throat from The X-Files AKA Melora Hardin AKA Jan Levinson-Gould’s dad) (was that too many AKAs) (you get it, right?) didn’t look enough like Mark Twain, I guess? In conclusion: what if eyebrow wigs were a thing?
Twain is having a chit chat with “Madame Guinan,” who is wearing what can only be called a sumptuous gown:
It’s 11:30 and the gown is sumptin’ sumptin’
There are so many ELEMENTS to this look! First of all: the color. Royal purple. Fit for a queen. Appropriate.
Then: those sleeves! These sleeves are known as “leg of mutton sleeves” because they KIND OF look like a leg of mutton. Have you ever seen a leg of mutton? I haven’t. I’ve only seen these sleeves. Plus they have a stripe?? No, I don’t know why, but I LOVE IT.
The cuffs and the cravat bring this from “dress” to “lewk.” Top it all off with this hat and you have a true 1893 mood.
What bird is that feather even from
We get a few good extra looks in this scene as well:
Pink Lady is NOT wearing a corset
Look, sometimes you don’t have enough period-appropriate undergarments for all the background people and that’s fine. But I WILL notice.
Is that Loretta Lynn
I am loving all of this! That purple dress is fantastic, those stripes? I die. Military man has some fun flair on his shoulder, and there is a dude in a beautiful turban back there. Plus, another Black lady in addition to Guinan and That One Ensign Who Is On The Bridge Sometimes.
Data rolls in to the literary event in a different suit with a CRAVAT:
Craving a cravat
Data is like “we serve together on the same starship in the 24th century” and Guinan is like “huh” but then she’s like “okay” which...I’m not sure if I would believe that? But let’s just say it’s fine.
Over in the 24th century, the literal entire bridge crew is checking out the temporal disturbance and I DON’T LIKE THIS AT ALL:
Blue Man Group...on ACID
These beings are like ghosts but also like Dr. Manhattan but also like pure energy.
Then everyone goes through the temporal disturbance AND THE SEASON ENDS.
Fortunately for you, this post will continue...right now.
Okay, so we’re back in San Francisco in 1893. You can tell by the horses:
Also the fruit carts
Samuel Clemens is strolling around with a reporter, telling him that he has a great story for him that involves time travelers and, like, protecting the nation.
Here’s the thing about this episode’s version of Mark Twain: he’s kind of a dick. Was the real Mark Twain kind of a dick? I just feel like Mark Twain should be JAZZED about meeting time travelers and not acting like a fuckin’ time cop* and trying to put the Enterprise crew on blast.
Anyway I love his double-breasted vest.
See my vest
The reporter’s hat is technically period-accurate, but that style is SO associated with the 1930s-1950s that I would have gone with something else. He looks cute though.
Meanwhile, Data is wearing a three-piece suit:
My positronic olfactory synapses are interpreting something as...a fart
I hate brown, but this is fine.
Additionally, the beige baddies from before are back and this time, they’ve got a SNAKE CANE:
Love the snake cane, hate how they suck the life out of people
But we are not here for them, we are here to see our faves in period clothing. Our first look is at Riker, who is dressed as an actual cop, not a time cop like Mark Twain:
The past just had...so many buttons
I guess if you’re a time-traveling white man there are worse disguises than a cop. But WHERE DID HE GET THIS UNIFORM? I choose to believe that he found a cop with a similar large handsome body to his own and beat the shit out of him and stole his clothes. Now we can all enjoy imagining a cop being beat up.
The badge that Riker is wearing is a great historical detail; the SFPD started wearing them in 1886 and are reportedly the first law enforcement agency to have worn the seven-pointed star, which is now a common shape among sheriff’s departments across the United States.
But let’s move on to a better look: Dr. Beverly Crusher:
Curlz MT
Okay, now I have more questions. Beverly obviously wouldn’t beat someone up for their clothes, so where did SHE get HER outfit? And who did her hair? Did she do her OWN hair? Where did she get a curling iron? Does she know how to use a curling iron? Was it one of those ones that’s actually made of iron that you have to heat up in a fireplace?
We will get answers to zero (0) of these questions.
We actually get a much better look at her dress later, so let’s focus on that cloak!!! I love it and I also love her hat. Okay, I guess I had less to say about those than I thought.
Bev and Will, along with the rest of the officers, have somehow procured a room/apartment in some lady’s lodging house. It’s cute!
They gave it 5 stars on AirBnB
This also raises questions. How did they get this room? How many bedrooms does it have? Are they sharing one large bed? If so, who has to sleep crossways at the foot of the bed and why is it Geordi? We will get zero answers to these questions as well, so let’s move on to arguably the hottest costume in this two-parter:
I’ll be in Holodeck 4
Whewwwwwww. He’s giving us a rolled sleeve. He’s giving us a casual tweed vest. The pants? They’re perfect. And he KNOWS how that slouch is working. It’s working VERY well. But the Irish landlady? She’s having NONE OF IT.
Absolutely NO nonsense
She needs the rent, but Picard charms her and she leaves. So I guess that’s how they got the room. Her look is knitwear-forward:
Eileen Fisher does sound like an Irish name
She’s got a shawl AND a cardigan! The cozy factor is OFF THE CHARTS. She also has a brooch, because a touch of fancy is always welcome. I will say that her hair is a little more fashion-forward than I’d expect for a woman of her age and station. This is straight up 1890s hair, and she would probably still be rocking an 1860s look, which isn’t as sweepy and would likely involve more braids. Still, she looks lovely.
Geordi is also here looking dapper:
Make the collar as high as you can. I want to be sliced open by my own collar
You CAN go wrong with a three-piece suit, but it’s difficult to. He can’t wear his visor, so he has some kicky shades which we’ll get a better look at in a sec.
Back at the Hotel Brian (lol), the bellboy (who we learn in this scene is Jack London, inspired to be a writer by Mark Twain [citation needed]) lets Mark Twain into Data’s room and allows him to look around unsupervised. This is very bad hotel management.
Great Scott
Then Data and Guinan show back up, and Mark Twain hides in an armoire.
One short day in the emerald brocade
I think one reason I love Guinan’s looks so much, both in the 24th and the 19th century, is that our color palette is very similar. We’re both winters. Bold jewel tones are the vibe. This one is in a beautiful deep green fabric with what looks like a velvet flocking pattern on it. The collar is also velvet, and I love that sleeve with a flounce on top like there wasn’t already enough fucking fabric on the sleeve so they just added a random piece to be like “yes, bitch. I’m a sleeve.”
Naturally, the hat is also jaunty af:
San Francisco’s hottest milliner is: Madame Guinan
This hat has everything: feathers, netting, a brim, an angle that makes you think it’s going to fall off but it doesn’t. We stan.
Meanwhile, Picard is setting up a sensor in a hospital while wearing a hat:
I’m bowled over
We haven’t even asked where Picard got these clothes, but I would like to point out that he’s dressed as a lower-class guy, while Riker is a cop, and Geordi looks like a gentleman. Was there even a discussion they all had about how they would disguise themselves? Was Picard like “I just really want to wear a beat-up bowler hat” and since he’s the captain, they extrapolated from there? This episode is NOT CONCERNED about any of this. They all have clothes, end of story.
Bev even has TWO outfits!!
Hello nurse!!!!
I love this look. She still has her unlikely hairstyle happening, which means her nurse’s cap is sitting atop her voluminous hairstyle. (Not very practical, but realistic!) She’s sporting a simple striped dress and a button-on apron. (Look closely and you can see the two buttons holding the apron to the dress.) The fabric underneath might be cotton seersucker, but it’s likely a lightweight cotton or linen twill. You can see how closely her look matches these nurses from a similar time period:
Hello nurses!!!!
Deanna is also in this scene and this episode, but you wouldn’t know it from what she’s given to do. HUGE SHOCKER: TROI NOT GIVEN ENOUGH TO DO IN AN EPISODE. 🙃
She still looks beautiful:
Why aren’t capelets more popular
We never get a really GREAT look at her whole outfit, but I can tell you that it has a capelet, it’s in the red family, and the hat has a lot of business going on. For those reasons: approved. It has a flounce in the back too:
More fabric = more wealth
Sometimes I think about just how much fabric it took to make these old-timey dresses and I’m like...how did anyone get anything done?? It takes me like 4 weeks to finish a pair of leggings and those have like 5 seams and I own a serger. These historical bitches were sewing whole ass dresses in no time at all.
Okay, so Bev is in this hospital and here come some more energy-stealing aliens, disguised as healthcare professionals this time:
I cannot take a medical professional wearing a LIGHT BROWN TOP HAT seriously, sorry
Bev AND this energy-stealing alien have BOTH managed to get their hands on the SAME nurse’s uniform?? I guess in the case of the alien, she is a shape-shifter, so she got her clothes from...that. And her hair.
I hate this light brown top hat. If you’re going to wear a top hat, don’t DISRESPECT IT by making it BROWN, but if you’re going to make it brown, make it a good brown, like chocolate. Stupid energy-stealing aliens.
There’s a skirmish, the energy-stealing aliens disappear, and the real cops show up:
MOUSTACHE
Of course, the cops showing up is bad, because when has a cop showing up ever made a bad situation better? Never. Defund the police, but don’t defund handlebar mustaches. Those can stay.
Fortunately, Data has gotten a ping on that machine he was building before and shows up on a motherfucking HORSE:
Brent just wanted to show off
He’s back in his brown striped suit and red tie. Okay.
Everyone returns to the boarding house to suss out the situation, and we get a look at what Riker is rocking underneath his cop jacket:
Suspend me daddy
You can see very clearly here how the collar is not actually attached to the shirt. This was a thing people in the olden days did so they could wear their shirt for multiple days in a row and just switch out the collar and cuffs so they looked clean. As someone who is wearing the same sweatshirt for the third day in a row, I support this method. (If you’re interested on more info about collars, here is a very enjoyable article about them.)
We are also blessed with a better look at Deanna’s sleeves and bodice:
Black lace cuffs? Decadent!!!
You can also see Geordi’s shades, which suit him really nicely. One thing I’ve been enjoying on this rewatch is just how well LeVar Burton can act without having his eyes visible. He’s great. Let’s just all think about how great LeVar Burton is for a second
And also Bev’s dress:
I legitimately want this dress
I don’t think those buttons are functional. Can you imagine how annoying THAT would be? But I am absolutely in love with this dress. Two paisleys, Beverly???? A goddess. I’m also dying for that brooch with the chain. A+ look all around, great work.
Finally, FINALLY, Guinan meets the rest of the crew:
When you meet someone you won’t actually know for 500 years
She is wearing a hat that looks like a toilet paper cozy. Did your grandma have one of these? They’re so stupid and I love them so much.
Picard and Guinan meet for what is the first time for her, but not the first time for him, and honestly it is...sensual?????
If I got a m’lady from P. Stew I wouldn’t even mind
Patrick and Whoopi truly do some nice work in this ep. But we are here to yell about clothes, so: LOOK AT THIS DRESS ON AN EXTRA:
Gimme dat dress
I just want that dress to wear around my house. I legitimately bought an 18th century costume dress to do just that, so don’t think I won’t literally do this.
OKAY, WE ARE ALMOST TO THE END.
The crew, plus Guinan, go back to the cave where this all started:
Cave Club, the only club that meets in a cave
We get a nice look at the bodice of Guinan’s dress here and guess what: MORE BUTTONS. Buttons on the lapels, and also buttons on the front panel with the pointy top. I wonder if she has multiple front panels for that dress in different colors, like a Swatch watch.
Unbeknownst to them, Mark Twain followed them!! Then there’s a scuffle with the energy-stealing aliens during which a few things happen:
Data’s head flies off
Mark Twain gets sucked into the temporal disturbance
Guinan gets hurt
Picard stays behind to make sure Guinan is okay
So we end up with Mark Twain on the Enterprise, where he sees Worf, and he’s like:
Buh-WHAT
Worf is also confused:
This is...extremely perplexing
We have a few more looks back on the Enterprise, including Regular Guinan:
ShoulderSpreads™: The Bed Spread for Your Shoulders
I love love LOVE this outfit. The color is perfect, the shoulderspreads are perfect, the front draping is perfect. It looks like a velvet housedress from the 1960s except FANCY which is kind of my ideal aesthetic. And it’s red (my fave).
We get a quick glimpse at the barber uniform:
Bitch let me pass, idc if you wrote Huck Finn
This barber does. not. give. a. fuck!!!!
Geordi reattaches Data’s head, the one they already had, which means this whole thing was a ding dang closed loop. The reattachment also kind of diminishes the whole conversation they had earlier about how Data’s head in the cave meant that Data could die someday, because...he didn’t. He still might, but his head is back and he’s fine now.
Meanwhile, Picard is still back in 1893 and they have to go get him, but only one person can come back through the temporal disturbance, so Mark Twain is like “duh I’ll go get him.”
And finally Guinan and Picard can talk about how their friendship spans 500 years!!!!
Hey girl
Hey
YOU’RE WELCOME
*abolish the police

So we’re rewatching Avatar for the first time in years and we just finished the Northern Water Tribe arc in season 1. During the scene where Zhao is being taken by the ocean spirit and Zuko reaches out to take his hand, my husband paused the show and goes “Zuko was going to save him. After everything Zhao did to him, after he just tried to have Zuko killed literally two days before this, Zuko still tried to save him.”
And I had never really thought of it that way before, but holy shit. Even back in season 1 we were seeing just how fundamentally good and kind Zuko is. He hides it, sure, he tries to push that down because that was seen as weakness by his father, because his kindness and his empathy was what caused his father to disfigure and disown him. But to the very core of his being, he is a good person. And I absolutely love that.
I love that at this point in the story, we predominantly saw Zuko as this violent, arrogant, selfish, angry young man with a chip on his shoulder who’s just out for his own gain. But they were still subtly showing that there was more to him, that somewhere under the “evil, uncaring disgraced prince” facade there was a gentle boy trying his best. Zuko saved his helmsman and didn’t push to chase Aang during the storm because it would have endangered his crew. Zuko let Aang go when he rescued him as The Blue Spirit, he could have easily just taken him back home and turned him over to his father but he didn’t, he scared him off and let him leave. Zuko gave up chasing Aang again to save his uncle when he had been taken captive. Zuko defeated Zhao in Agni Kai, which is a fight to the death, and he let Zhao live- which Zhao took advantage of and he then tried to kill Zuko, he then called Zuko weak for showing mercy. And then, his biggest show of kindness in season 1, was trying to save the life of a man who had just two days before blown up his ship with him inside in an effort to kill him.
The show writers knew who Zuko was, they knew where his story was going, what trauma he had experienced, how warped his perceptions were and how hard he would have to fight to become who he really was, to embrace that he is a good person with good intentions and that his father and his nation and their colonizing are a detriment to the world. His redemption wasn’t some plot twist story arc put in just to surprise you, it was there from the beginning. And then at the same time, none of this undoes the absolutely awful things he’s done to people and the show never brushes those things under the rug or just makes them go away after Zuko shows a gentler side. He always has to deal with the consequences of his actions, no matter how redeemed he is and how good he works to become, he is always atoning and making amends for what he did and trying his best to make things right even though he can’t change what he did.
This is why Avatar is such an incredible piece of storytelling, this is why Zuko is one of the best written characters of all time and why he’s stuck with so many people for so long and I am so happy that more people are getting to experience this story now that it’s on Netflix.

Hello, so I am not sure if you're following the 7 on 7 vought thing on youtube, but apparently, they said that they're kinda doing a reality tv show to see who will get into the 7 (with starlight as host). However, I wonder how that will work with soldier boy and crimson countess since they seem to be the most prevalent supes this season in the sense that those characters were the big superhero reveals in terms of who will be on the show.
Part of me thinks that soldier boy will be kind of hidden and also behind the scenes but also they'll do something where they'll try to replace homelander but fail (cause homelander is THEE VILLIAN of the series), but then again JA is a big name in a way because he has a big fanbase and he's kinda a fan favourite plus Eric Kripke seems to love him (I'm referencing to soldier boy being killed off, my brain is going 1 billion miles an hour as I'm writing this cause I have to get it all OUT - I also just finished rewatching s2 a few days ago so it's still fresh in my mind).
I also think soldier boy is a ploy to somehow diverge everyone's attention from vought's nazi past and focus on good ol murican values etc by using soldier boy (which kinda fits into the accent that Jensen is using and I really can't wait to see more of it).
Even though s2 is still fresh in my mind I still have no idea what to think about for s3. It's like I have more to say but I don't know how haha
I’ve read the comics a few years ago and I stg I gotta read them again cause I forgot so much. I gotta get back into the boys lore and rewatch s2 again.
But So I’ve heard from that VoughtHQ instagram acc that was originally a fan account gained so many followers so fast that Amazon/The Boys has given them behind the scene access and they’ve said that Solider boy isn’t in the season as much as we think. but when he is, it’s a lot (meaning intense scenes) I’ll see if I can find the ss of where they said that.
and yes agreed with the whole Vought using Solider boy as a PR diversion to rebuild their image from the Nazi thing.
I feel like SB is gonna be some kinda anti hero in a way? Like they aren’t putting him in the 7 and all that so what’s really his motive for coming out of hiding yknow. I’m very curious and herogasm may actually kill me and kripke said one of the most insane things happen in episode one which we now know is called Payback like Solider Boys og team and I’m literally going insane waiting for June. Cause exactly what you said idk what to expect, the cast and crew even Eric himself keep teasing this shit is gonna be wild and sure we have the comics but we’ve seen already how’s they spun some storylines and gotten rid of things and this site is gonna be un-useable when Jensens bareass shows up. And I’m also excited for what bat shit insane acting Antony does as homelander and I’m worried about what bs their gonna push Maeve through cause she is my queen my star. And the fact that their introducing more characters like supersonic and count crimsons makes me excited cause this whole world is so immersive I wanna know everything.

Dragon Prince Hot Takes
!!! Full Spoiler For “The Dragon Prince” Seasons 1-3!!!
So I finally got around to watching The Dragon Prince. Timely, I know, but better late than never i guess. I’m not completely caught up yet as I only got as far as S3E7 “Hearts of Cinder” in this first sitting. Considering I haven’t binged any series in almost two years, I think that’s pretty respectable. This means I won’t discuss the last few episodes here, except for a couple of things I was unfortunately spoiled for already, hence full spoilers.
These are basically my first thoughts and opinions after the binge and a good night’s sleep. It’s gonna be a lot so if you don’t care or don’t want spoilers…
TL;DR: 7½/10. Generally enjoyable, there are some aspects I’m not exactly fan of, but no dealbreakers
Firstly to everyone who told me that this was the new ATLA: you all need to rewatch Avatar stat! Like seriously. There are definitely parallels and given the cast and crew I think that’s what they were going for too (which is why I think it’s fair to compare the two), but still, no.
Secondly I love most of the worldbuilding and love that the series at least tries to give it to us in a bit of a non-linear fashion, even if it is kind of clumsy at times. I know some people are put off by expository dialogue and flashbacks, but I’m an epic fantasy nerd, I need that sweet, sweet lore to live as much as you mortals need food.
I like that there was clearly an effort made to integrate the worldbuilding in more subtle ways. For example you may initially find it kind of weird that all these different human ethnicities are existing perfectly integrated in what looks like a medieval society, until you remember from the opening monologue that the Human Kingdoms are the result of a massive diaspora following the human exodus from Xadia, so obviously people got all mixed up everywhere. It’s representation with an excellent in-world reason and that just brings me joy.
I also love the magic system(s) even though we haven’t really gone into that just yet. it really feels like there was a genuine effort made to create underlying mechanics for the magic rather than just making each spell a vaguely elemental themed ability. I really hope we’ll dive deeper into that in coming seasons.
I also like the little nods to other works of fantasy: Ezran’s ability to talk with animals is a reference to Tolkien’s world where some royal bloodlines had the ability to speak with animals, specifically birds; Primal Magic and its spells being cast with Ancient Draconic runes and words might be reminiscent of the Ancient Language from the Inheritance Cycle etc.
Thirdly the main cast is great. Callum, Ezran and Rayla are all interesting and relatable characters in their own right and as a group. I’m not going into each of them individually here, but while I think the series as a whole falls short of ATLA, as protagonist parties go I dare say this one is nearly on nearly on par with the gAang.¹
And yes, I love Bait, which I really did not expect following the first few episodes. I love his weird pug-toad-chameleon design, I love that he works like a flashbang whenever somebody says a quote from Scarface (I wish they hadn’t dropped that later on) and I love how done he is with everything and everyone at all times. I’ve only had him for 25 episodes, but if anything happened to him I would kill all of my followers and then myself.
On top of that, and speaking as someone who god knows is really not into shipping, I love Rayla and Callum’s relationship. It’s believable, it’s refreshing and it brings out the best in both characters without changing basically anything about them. Just two good friends who fell in love. A++, maybe even S tier.
Unfortunately though I can’t sing the same kind of praises about the villains. None of them are terrible (as in terribly written, most of them are pretty awful people), but with one exception they just don’t stand up to the protagonists in quality.
I could simply not take Viren seriously. Even now that is probably the single most powerful magic user in the world, he just has such strong Karen energy, every time he finishes a speech I am overcome with the urge to say “Sir, this is a Wendy’s” and it does not help the mood. I’m not even sure why. It might’ve been the voice because the guy who did Viren (Jason Simpson) also does a lot of kinda slimy characters in various anime dubs, it might be that over-the-top walking stick, idk.
What I’m saying is that as a primary antagonist he simply did not work for me. Which is doubly a shame because this kind of tarnishes the real “Big Bad” of this story by proxy. Aaravos, even as an invisible ghost, with his voice coming out of a caterpillar and next to no info on his backstory, has more style and gravity than all the human antagonists combined. It helps that he is by far the best designed character and Erik Dellums has the voice of a young god, but I’d argue even without that unfair advantage he has the potential to be a top tier villain. While he is stuck as Viren’s “little bug-pal” though he is just being dragged down.
(I’m aware that as of the final episode the caterpillar familiar is undergoing metamorphosis, probably to create a new body for Aaravos’ spirit to inhabit outside of the magic mirror, so I’m definitely hyped for more of him in the coming seasons.)
As for Soren and Claudia, I’ve got mixed feelings. This was one more aspect of the show that a lot of people compared to Avatar and while I see the parallels to Zuko & Azula, they are still very different, at least where Claudia is concerned. I’d also just like to mention that a lot of people told me that they thought the direction in which their storylines went were really surprising and I can’t disagree more. I predicted that Soren would defect to the protagonists on episode 5 right after Viren told him to kill the princes and I knew Claudia was going to stick with her father from episode 12 onward. My point is, it didn’t feel like some kind of plot twist, the way some people made it out to be, and which I don’t think was the intent.
I definitely got the sense that Soren was at least a Zuko-type character, though still not a Zuko clone, and as with Zuko I was consistently able to empathise and sympathise with him and his predicaments. I also appreciated that his dilemma is the result of his convictions and not him being kind of dense, which would’ve been all to easy and probably would’ve ruined his character for me. As it stands he is extremely milktoast, but perfectly functional for his purpose in the story and I can definitely see him evolving further and getting more interesting as we go on.
Claudia is where it gets complicated. Again, I can see the Azula parallels. But unlike that character, who is her father’s animal 110%, Claudia doesn’t strike me as a victim of Viren’s manipulation the way Soren undoubtably is. The way she talks about and uses Dark Magic, how she talks down to Soren and how even Viren finds it difficult to communicate with her, tells me as an audience member that she is an independent person. Which tells me that the cruelty and enthusiasm for causing harm she regularly displays is her own will. And that was before she straight up leads Callum on to manipulate him.
On the other hand I can absolutely relate to her devotion to her family, her big sister role (even though she is younger than Soren) and the way both the separation of her parents before the story and Soren’s injury in episode 16 must’ve affected her because of this. I know that, if my brother had become paralysed from the neck down and I knew a way to heal him, I would not have hesitated to kill that fawn either. Then again her relationship with her father is very different from parental relationships I am familiar with, so I can’t really say I see why she is so devoted to him, other than she promised her mother to stay with him years ago? ¯\(o_Ō)/¯
So basically Claudia falls into an emotional grey space for me. I can’t really tell how to feel about her either way and I’ll just have to see where she goes from here, which, while fine, isn’t necessarily great for an end of season cliffhanger imo.
Seeing as I’ve already talked about some of the show’s shortcomings, I think it’s time to dive into some of the what I would consider flaws.
Firstly this show needed at least 12 episode seasons. I have never made a secret out of my dislike for the modern short seasons and while I recognise that in the current climate in the industry giving everything full 25 episode seasons isn’t really doable, the pacing of this show, especially for the first season is just outright bad at times. It works as of the second season, but the first season alternately feels like it’s either rushing through or crawling along the whole way through.
The believability of Rayla’s and the princes’ relationship really suffers from this the most. It comes a bit out of nowhere on the boat ride and is then taken for granted way to quickly. Like Callum, seriously, this girl tried to kill you and your brother not even a day ago and you are currently cut off from all allies you have ever had until now. A little skepticism isn’t misplaced here. I also wold’ve liked if we’d just gotten a bit more of a sense of movement with the characters. I get that this is not the kind of show where we can just make an entire episode about the characters travelling and camping, intercut with plots centred around a more expansive supporting cast, but still I really would’ve preferred if Xadia didn’t feel quite so around the corner.
Another issue is with setup and payoff, which I think is partially a consequence of the pacing as well. A lot of smaller plot points are set up within the same episode as the payoff just wreak havoc on the narrative structure. A good example is the episode where they ride down the river in a boat and Bait tires to go into the water, but is saved by Ezran, who then explains the story behind Glowtoads and how they are pefect bait for large water predators. Then Bait falls into the water and is attacked by a massive water monster. This happens within five minutes of one episode and never comes up again. To me that looks like sign of rushed editing, which is probably not entirely the crew’s fault, given that they are on a schedule from Netflix, but it’s still a point of critique.
It unfortunately also manifests in the occasional line of horribly forced dialogue, often for things we can literally see happening on screen. Again, this is mostly the case in the earlier episodes, but it never completely goes away.
Finally, and this is where i get into serious issues that made me want to write this, we gotta talk about representation in this show.
First: disabled representation, meaning Amaya. Why is Amaya deaf? Because it’s good to have disabled representation.
Why is Amaya deaf and a high-ranking military officer? Because they didn’t think it through.
I know this may be a contentious opinion, but it is my belief that the purpose of representation, particularly of disabilities characters may suffer from, in fiction is to, y’know, represent people as they are in life. That includes especially the struggles they face and have to overcome, sometimes their whole life. This is not just me talking out of my ass either. A couple years ago I discussed this with several people that are disabled, specifically blind or otherwise severely visually impaired, in a different context obviously, and the general consensus was that it’s better to have representation that shows their life and their abilities as they are, rather than how they might wish they could be.
A mute or deaf person cannot be a medieval fantasy army general, no matter how good they might be in melee combat or who’s sister they are, because at the end of the day, they’re not able to give commands while they are holding a sword and shield. That such a massive logical oversight, especially in comparison to the extremely well done example of representation I mentioned above, and has so little impact on the plot that it leads me to believe, this aspect of Amaya’s character was tacked on in the last minute without being given any thought for the sole reason of the story having a disabled person in it. All this does is necessitate the existence of two otherwise entirely unnecessary characters, Gren and Kazi, both of which achieve nothing, aside from sometimes being literal set dressing.
That is where representation ends and tokenism begins.
And unfortunately this generally lacklustre attitude also extends to the LGBT+ representation on the show.
As of S3E7 “Hearts of Cinder” we have had two onscreen gay couples on the show (onscreen in the sense that both partners were onscreen and they were somehow confirmed to be in a relationship on the show). One of these, the queens of Duren, literally die in the same flashback they are introduced in, which incidentally also features them invading a foreign nation to poach a rare animal and subsequently starting the conflict at the series’ core. Not a great look.
Aside from serving as a tragic backstory for their daughter, the most impact they had on my viewing experience was that they made wonder how the fuck royal succession works in Duren. (People who know me are rolling their eyes right now because I’m bringing anarchism into this Dragon Prince review, but I’m telling you, this why fantasy monarchies aren’t compatible with LGBT+ politics in the same setting. Dynastic governments are inherently bigoted, you can’t have it both ways.)
The other couple are Runaan and Ethari, Rayla’s caretakers, although if I’m being honest you wouldn’t be able tell based on Runaan’s treatment of Rayla in the first episode. By the time we actually meet Ethari and find out about their relationship with Rayla, Runaan is suffering “a fate worse than death” (direct quote from the show) trapped in a gold coin.
I mean come on. That’s about as “technically not ‘bury your gays’” as it gets.
I think I need to reiterate here that my point is not that this show or its creators are somehow malicious. As i stated in the TL;DR: I don’t think this is a dealbreaker for liking this show. But it does demonstrate that they are prone to slipping to some potentially harmful tropes and this needs to be criticised and pointed out to them.
In conclusion, I really love this show. It’s not ATLA, it never will be, nothing else will ever be ATLA no matter how badly (and terribly) Netflix tries. But it does and should not have to be.
What it has to do though is improve. A lot of the building blocks are already there, such as Aaravos or Claudia’s development, Callum’s father, the origin of Ezran’s ability, the purpose of the “Key of Aaravos”, the true fate of King Harrow (we all know his soul is in the bird, right?) etc. Some things like the treatment of Amaya’s disability unfortunately won’t be fixable as far as I can tell, but if they at least manage to fix the gay representation I can make my peace with that.
¹ I know I said I wouldn’t go into each of the characters individually, but a) you should never trust a stranger on the internet and b) I really want to talk a bit about Callum. Specifically the “mystery” of why the hell he is connected to the Sky Primal. I write “mystery” because I think it’s fairly obvious from whence this talent came: there is only one humanoid species we know of with innate access to the Sky Arcanum and one of Callum’s parent’s is unidentified, presumed dead. 2+2=4. Callum’s father was a Skywing Elf. That’s why he recognised Nyx’s boomerang weapon. He remembered one like it either from his very early childhood (remember that he has photographic memory) or Sarai kept one and he found it at some point.
On top of that the name “Callum” or at least the pronunciation is clearly derived from Latin “caelum” meaning “sky” or “weather” and I already mentioned that Ancient Draconic is just bad Latin. It’s not very subtle. Unless they pull a complete 180 concerning the lore about Primal Magic he’s definitely going to be a half-elf, which would also just so happen to make him the perfect mediator between the Human Kingdoms and Xadia. Hmm, it’s almost as if they are planning ahead.
My question: How the fuck did that happen? Or rather: how did that fuck happen? I don’t think even Harrow knew or he probably would’ve a) paid more attention when Sarai advised against poaching the Magma Titan, because obviously she’s gotten around Xadia more than him, if y’know what i’m sayin’ ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) or at least b) put it in his final letter to Callum. Unfortunately we know basically nothing about Sarai except that she was a soldier alongside Amaya and already had Callum before marrying Harrow. So does Amaya know? This is probably the most interesting plot thread in the whole story and as far as my friends told me it’s not going to be touched on anymore in the last two episodes than it already has thus far, which is basically not at all.

Prep for the 60th: 2nd Season of Doctor Who
“One day, I shall come back. Yes, I shall come back. Until then, there must be no regrets, no tears, no anxieties. Just go forward in all your beliefs, and prove to me that I am not mistaken in mine.”
The second season of Doctor Who begins to introduce us to the fundamental concept of Doctor Who and that is change. This season we begin to see why change makes the show work and makes the show last. But of course there are tears, smiles, and memories that established with every departure and yet excitement over the possibilities that can now come with fresh faces and voices. So beginning with the TARDIS team, this is how the season started:
(From left: The Doctor, Ian Chesterton, Susan Foreman, and Barbara Wright)
And this is the TARDIS team jumping into season three:
(From left: Vicki, The Doctor, and Steven Taylor)
With the departures of Susan, Ian, and Barbara, we get a fresh new start to what it means to be a TARDIS team and travel with the Doctor. And one of things Classic Who does really well in my opinion is the blending of teams as people leave and join the team, plus there aren’t catastrophic moments when a companion departs even if you might not like it (like I did with Susan). Still with a fresh TARDIS team, let’s introduce the new companions.
Vicki Pallister is a sixteen year old girl from Earth from the 25th century. She is rescued by the Doctor, Ian, and Barbara after her spacecraft crash lands on the planet Dido and she is lied to by a convict who has killed the rest of the crew, including Vicki’s father, to avoid being locked up again. Thankfully, she gets picked up by the Doctor who fresh off the emotions of leaving his real granddaughter behind, takes Vicki lovingly into his world.
Steven Taylor, is also from the future though its unclear which era exactly he comes from. He is found on the planet Mechanus where after crash landing, he has been held prisoner by the Mechanoids for over two years on his own. Once he meets the Doctor, Barbara, Ian, and Vicki, he gets energized to escape, but its chaotic when the Daleks start battling the Mechanoids. So at first you don’t think he makes it into the TARDIS, but after one serial, I’m glad he stole away because he’s a fun guy to get to know.
The serials:
1. Planet of Giants
This serial introduces the first instance where something wrong can happen to the TARDIS and the team has to deal with it in whatever situation they find themselves in. In this case, something affects the TARDIS’ materialization that causes the TARDIS to not fully materialize at its full size, but instead at a miniature level. So while the Doctor and Susan are climbing sink drains and Ian and Barbara are dealing with giant insects and insecticide, what the team doesn’t realize is they inadvertently help prevent this extremely toxic chemical from going to the market by being present while full size humans are murdering each other over money. Overall Rating: 7/10
2. The Dalek Invasion of Earth
The Daleks have conquered Earth in the year 2164 and are in the process of extracting the core of the planet and replacing it with a machine to allow them to pilot the planet. It’s a crazy plan, but even though they’ve conquered Earth and enslaved humans to force slavery onto other humans, there entire plan falls apart when the TARDIS lands and the team finds ways to stop them and embolden the humans of Earth. But this is the first episode of goodbyes because the Doctor makes the decision to leave Susan behind so that she can explore her wish to belong somewhere and follow her dreams without him. Overall Rating: 8/10
3. The Rescue
The Doctor is surprised when they land on the planet Dido, a place he’s been before, that the inhabitants are gone and in there place is a few monsters and a crashed spaceship. He then helps discover the true reason for this, that Koquillion isn’t a true resident of Dido, but Bennet who has not only killed his crew and some of the Dido people in order to be rescued by Earth and not still be convicted of his previous crimes. Foiling his plan, the Doctor also takes Vicki Pallister into the TARDIS once she tells them she’s been orphaned due to Bennet’s actions. Plus missing his granddaughter, the Doctor immediately latches onto Vicki who is need of care. Overall Rating: 8/10
4. The Romans
After leaving Dido, the team takes a break in ancient Italy enjoying a month’s vacation in an empty house and living life of Romans. But eager for adventure the Doctor and Vicki set off for Rome and quickly get caught up in the affairs of Cesar Nero’s court when the Doctor is mistaken for a famed musician. But instead of continued life in luxury, Ian and Barbara get kidnapped for a slave trader, Ian going to hard labor in a boat and Barbara to the court of Cesar Nero as the Empress’ pretty handmaid. Ian of course breaks few and chases after her and there’s a great sequence of all four being in close proximity and never seeing each other. Plus we learn the Doctor is the reason behind Cesar Nero’s idea for burning down all of Rome. Overall Rating: 10/10
5. The Web Planet
I know this is one of the beloved serial from Classic Who, but I’m sorry, I can’t. Between the constant beeping of the Zarbi, the weird speaking and hand motions of the Menoptra, and the bizarre enemy of the Animus who makes webs but is some ethereal being, I just can’t get on board with it. Plus while the scattering of the companions in other episodes is okay, this one just feels unnecessary and ridiculous when the final scene is all four coming together in the Animus chamber to then defeat it. Plus, how do any of these creatures actually live and breathe on this planet? Overall Rating: 3/10
6. The Crusade
Having just recently read the book novelization of this serial, I was happy to rewatch it again, though it is disappointing that two of the episodes are missing. The show itself tells a good story of how the TARDIS team lands in the middle of the crusades, explores the two factions between Richard the Lionheart and Saladdin, but also was just a good watch this snippet of history and don’t get too involved with the major events. Sure Barbara is captured and the story revolves around Ian rescuing her, but for the most part the TARDIS team takes a backseat as we explore Richard’s weariness to go home and his trials to try and end these long wars. Overall Rating: 8/10
7. The Space Museum
This is the second serial that explores the problem of something weird happening to the TARDIS, when it materializes a few moments ahead of it actually physically materializing and gives the team a glance at a possible future in which the four are turned into exhibits for the space museum they stumble upon. Fearful of accidentally ending up this way, they instead find themselves running from the keepers of the museum and in Vicki’s case, starting a revolution against them to try and prevent the outcome. It’s one of the more suspenseful early stories, mainly because the Doctor almost does get turned into nothing but a model, but also when he does sneak inside an empty Dalek shell to escape his captors, we see that silly side of him come out. Overall Rating: 9/10
8. The Chase
In probably the most confusing Dalek story ever, we go on quite the journey to avoid the Dalek’s chase of the TARDIS team. It starts on the planet Aridius, ends on the planet Mechanus, and somehow manages to go to New York for the first time, the Mary Celeste ship, and a haunted horror house where Frankenstein destroys a Dalek. We do learn some interesting things about the Daleks and the TARDIS in this episode, but its also notable for two reasons. The first is we meet Steven Taylor and though its unclear, we learn in the next episode he steals away on the TARDIS to avoid being stuck on Mechanus. The second is it’s the serial where Barbara and Ian leave the TARDIS once they realize the Daleks’ time machine can get them back to London in their own time. Overall Rating: 6/10
9. The Time Meddler
We meet another Gallifreyan and the first besides the Doctor and Susan when the Doctor lands just before the Battle of Hastings. We also learn more about the Doctor’s people (though not their species or planet yet) and that there are principles to Time Travel which the Monk has no issue exploiting for his own amusement, but the Doctor is strict about. This leads to the Doctor finding ways to prevent the Monk’s plan of destroying the invading Viking fleet while also removing a key component in the Monk’s TARDIS so he can’t meddle through time anymore. Overall Rating: 9/10
Adding to our previous lists, items in bold are things we learned in Season 2:
Historical Figures:
Marco Polo
Kublai Khan
Maximillen Robespierre
Napoleon Bonaparte
Ceasar Nero
King Richard the Lionheart
Things we learn about the Doctor:
Pioneer among gallifreyans
Ian only refers to one heart being okay “his heart is okay”
Knows three dimensional graph geometry
Things I’ve learned about the TARDIS:
It has a computer that reads and feed data to compute information about where to go next
It has a food generator where you pick flavors to be added to a nutrient bar
The lock comes away from the door and has 27 different mechanisms, getting one wrong might melt the lock
Field dimensions can be damaged by breaking down doors
The TARDIS is made of material that is impervious to Dalek shots
The Doctor does not have a Mark 4
Things we learn about Gallifrey:
It’s quite like Earth, but at night the sky burns orange and the leaves on the trees are a bright silver
Timelords we meet:
The Monk
People the Doctor has supposedly met before:
Pyrrho
Henry VIII
James Watt

wtFOCK season 3, episode 1 reaction
So! It’s a million years too late, but I decided to talk about wtFOCK season 3.
I had fairly positive feelings about S1 of wtFOCK. It was the scrappy underdog of the Skam remakes, in a way, and what it lacked in polish, it made up for authenticity. I was very willing to overlook its flaws because of what I perceived as genuine attempts to connect with teenagers. I was really, really holding out hope that future seasons would improve on its flaws. And ... well. (Disclaimer: I still haven’t seen S2. Sorry! I just failed to keep up with all the remakes and S2 is my least fave so I didn’t feel that motivated to make it a priority, even though I did like Zoë a lot in S1.)
Heads up - I didn’t care for this season. A lot of people did, and I would never, ever want to ruin someone’s enjoyment of something, even if I personally didn’t like it. So please take this as a warning that I have a lot of negative things to say, and don’t read if it’s going to harsh your buzz for a pairing or a story that you deeply love. However, I didn’t want to just be grumpy and angry the whole time, so I tried to think of constructive ways to fix certain problems I had with this season. No guarantees that they’re satisfying solutions, but it was an interesting exercise.
Also, I didn’t watch this in real time, and I paid barely any attention to fandom reactions and/or drama, so it’s very possible that I am missing context, or that pacing issues didn’t register with me quite as strongly, etc. If one of the actors ate a live dolphin on Instagram, and then got into a fight with fans on Twitter about their right to eat live dolphins, and now fandom has canceled the problematic dolphin-eating actor, I legit do not know, do not come at me if I’m like “This actor is doing a good job” with “Wow, didn’t know you stanned dolphin-eaters??? YIKES.” Honestly, for the purposes of just grading this season on a storytelling level, I would prefer not to know anything about the cast or crew unless it directly has an impact on the show itself.
Clip 1 - House party
OK, I did like this flashy intro shot, immersing us in the Wild ‘n’ Crazy Teen Party of Wild ‘n’ Crazy Youths.
Amber rejecting every dude in site … When Will Gay Vilde Rise. (I know there have been some f/f storylines in the remakes, but if there’s one involving an actual Vilde, please let me know.)
Luca saying “We’re not walking around in a high school drama” - you can hear the rimshot.
I do like the transition from the party up to the bathroom, that’s a cool shot. wtFOCK’s directing so far is more ambitious than it was in S1.
Robbe is clearly a mess and they acknowledge his problems at home right off the bat.
We go back downstairs. wtFOCK’s version of Magnus knocks his drink on Amber and she gets pissed. She gives him the finger and he falls in love. Still a better love story than S3 Daphne/Basile.
It’s a small point, but I don’t get why we didn’t get this moment before jumping up to the bathroom with Robbe and the others? It would be a far smoother transition, just on a practical level and also in the sense of fully immersing us in Robbe’s POV after a quick update with the other characters.
Belgian Magnus joins the guys in the bathtub and announces he’s in love. They roast him when they find out it’s Amber and start talking about hot chicks. Moyo starts grilling Robbe about his type of girl, in a crass, sexual way.
This is honestly not a bad start to Robbe’s story at all. Robbe is clearly more reluctant to get into his interest in girls than Isak was - Isak was more fuckboyish from the start, Robbe seems like he’s about to start squirming and doesn’t really give an answer to Moyo’s questioning. Which is fine! I think it’s fine to start off the POV character at different stages of performing heterosexuality, as long as it’s taken into account in the writing of the character’s whole arc. The fact that the boy talk is so crude and sexual just ramps up Robbe’s alienation.
I swear, I will never understand how the girls in this scene just go into the bathroom and pee in front of strange boys … like maybe I am just a ~prude but that seems like a recipe for disaster and I would not trust those little fuckers to not be secretly recording me on the toilet.
Her peeing is kind of a power move, like marking her territory.
Also L M A O at Robbe starting to flirt with the girl while she is pissing … like now this comes off as a kink thing. OK, Robbe. Jokes aside, this gets across the same meaning as the scene with Isak: he starts to flirt with her because he was encouraged by the other guys.
Uh, flush the toilet, lady. And use some TP.
Now this version of Emma seriously radiates some Natalie Portman in The Professional vibes.
She orders him to stand up and then starts kissing him. I get way less of a vibe of Robbe’s mad game with women (like how Isak negged Emma into kissing him) and more like this girl is the love interest out of an indie romcom, all mysterious and spunky. She kisses him like once after taking his jay and then leaves. The boys all crack up. Moyo tells Robbe it’s his responsibility to get the weed back which lmao, no it’s not, all you assholes were there and could have intervened.
This scene is perfectly fine and even effective! Not entirely the same vibes as OG, but it still has a purpose and some obvious cause-and-effect, and there are some nice stylistic choices.
Clip 2 - Party pt. 2
Robbe is now making out with mystery girl. We already have a divergence in characterization from OG. Isak was being performative about making out with Emma and shut it down once the guys left. Robbe is making out with this girl because he wants to be straight, I guess? If it’s not to appeal to his friends, it’s likely that this is for himself. Again, I have no real problem with this change if it’s incorporated into Robbe’s overall arc and characterization. My thing is, if you’re writing this scene, do you realize the differences in characterization? Or do you think this is interchangeable from what happened with Isak? The latter is where you run into problems, because then the writing shows lack of nuance. I bring this up here because, well, you can guess how I feel about later events.
Luca seems rather aggro about the mystery woman, which I assume is because she still has the hots for Robbe?
It makes me laugh that we got this first-person POV as Robbe leaves through the garage, because of the “Smack My Bitch Up” song being played in the last clip (the song had an infamous music video, banned from MTV in the ‘90s, that was from a first-person POV). But again, WTFock is trying harder with the cinematography and direction, good for them.
Robbe ditches the cops by jumping on the bike with Belgian Emma. OK, I get it, Belgian Emma is too cool for school.
I have kinda mixed feelings on that, actually. I mean, I’ll be honest - I don’t see why any Emma has to be made into someone more palatable. Definitely don’t demonize her or present her in a misogynistic way! She deserves sympathy and dignity as much as any character on a Skam. But … it’s fine if she and the Isak aren’t like, amazingly compatible except for his sexuality. The Even character is supposed to be the one who really shakes up the Isak’s world! The Isak is supposed to be lost and confused and drifting and then Even comes in and is someone he can really open up to. Not just because he’s another guy who’s into guys, but because Even’s personality meshes with Isak’s so easily while still challenging him and introducing him to new things. In a way, it does kinda diminish the effect of the Even if the Isak meets ANOTHER mysterious stranger who’s an awesome person. Or at the very least, it lessens the feeling of the Isak’s detachment from everything.
And again, this could work if the writing realizes it. You can totally craft a subtly different arc from the pieces of Isak’s season. It’s just that (speaking from the future) I do not feel this is what happened.
Clip 3 - Tagging time
I don’t think it’s necessary to break up all the parts of a longer scene/set piece into a bunch of different clips. If you start a scene at 16:00, it’s OK to have the clip take place over several hours. You don’t need to chop it up unless there’s a reason why this pacing might benefit the story. Honestly, if you’re watching in real time, I think this method is often less effective at building tension/emotion/etc. But wtFOCK is not the first remake to try this tactic.
... this part where Robbe and Noor put on masks sure hits differently in 2020.
Belgian Emma’s name is Noor and she takes him to a warehouse, or something? It’s very secret and Cool Kid. And IDK, it’s fun, but again… I think making the Emma that much of a fun mysterious cool exciting person is very much diminishing the effect of Robbe’s isolation. We had a good start with establishing that alienation while he was in the tub, but now his reactions to her rad hipness feel way too sincere and act against the major character conflict of his season. He seems nervous to go with her, but not because he’s with a girl, just because it’s a risky scenario.
Noor hands Robbe a spray paint can and leads him to tag a wall. There’s a guy taking pictures. So I’m assuming one of the guys in masks is the Even? The POV seems to shift to the photo guy briefly, like we’re seeing Robbe through his eyes. And even though I’m not a fan of POV breakage, I do think this is a cool way to introduce the Even without really introducing him, you know? If that’s him. (EDIT from the future: Ummm, so that wasn’t Sander, right? I’m rewatching and it doesn’t look like him. Soooo that part has even less relevance than I originally thought. Got it.) (EDIT from the future beyond the future: @hellswolfie tells me that this actually was Sander, so I am just bad at recognizing people, lol.)
Robbe and Noor take off their masks briefly to kiss. Uhhhh, did the scene really just … cut off there? Because L M A O what a weird choice. We don’t get to see what Robbe creates on the wall, which could be a great way to establish his character, AND we end with him on a smiley, contented note which does not boost his POV at all. It legit just makes him seem like a guy who’s into this girl, and sorry, even if that’s his public persona at this point in time … that’s not what we, the audience should be getting at all.
Clip 4 - Boy squad morning after
Robbe skateboards to meet up with the guy squad. Again, the directing is far better IMO than in S1.
Robbe got the weed back so that conflict is over, I guess.
He gets a call from his mom and stops laughing with the guys and gets serious. He walks away to take the call. Then he starts to open up to Jens about his mom freaking out, and then Moyo spots some girls so they all ditch Robbe to go chase girls, and WOW, Jens, please turn in your Jonas card.
Don’t love that we didn’t hear his mom on the phone. There’s no reason not to let us hear what she’s saying since it would be in Robbe’s POV AND as it turns out, they just tell us about the situation with his mom right off the bat, anyway, so it’s not like there’s much point in hiding it.
This was effective in a sense to establish how girl-crazy his friends are, as well as setting up Robbe’s isolation, which I was worried wouldn’t come across as strongly after meeting Noor. But I think they could have NOT mingled in his mom issues to make this part more effective. Like if the goal was to show more of Robbe being alienated because he’s gay, then that’s not entirely successful, because there are non-gay reasons why Robbe wouldn’t join his pals on the girl chase. I mean, even a horny hetero Robbe might not want to chase girls with his bros because talking to his mom is a downer, so it’s not necessarily because of his sexuality. Plus he just found a girl he liked in Noor, so apparently, he’s not on the prowl. What this part IS communicating that the Belgian guy squad doesn’t have much interest in their friend’s family struggles, which ... ehhhh, maybe not great in the grand scheme of the storyline? These guys can be flawed, for sure, but we do need them to care about Robbe’s well-being. And Robbe tried to open up here, so the flaw is not in him, it’s in his friends. I’m going to let it slide because Jens was offering to help Robbe in the first clip, so it’s not like he’s been a totally insensitive friend this whole time.
Clip 5 - Phone call from Robbe’s dad
Noor jumps on Robbe and they make out. She shows him the garage and they talk about the tagging world or w/e. Again, not sure why they are portraying Noor as like … a legit love interest. I don’t get much of a sense of discomfort from Robbe. Isak was just not into Emma and was uncomfortable when his bathroom flirting came back to haunt him. And I don’t think it’s TERRIBLE not to follow that route, but you can’t just make this huge change if you don’t account for it in future episodes and Robbe’s overall arc. (EDIT from the future: Which I don’t think they do, otherwise I wouldn’t care.) Every scene should count in furthering Robbe’s character, especially this early in the season where we’re just getting to know his particular struggles. If Robbe is trying to convince himself to like girls, then I want to see definite vulnerability in how that’s portrayed.
I blame the directing/writing more than the acting for the lack of discomfort, since I sensed Robbe’s lack of comfort just fine in the bathtub scene.
Makeouts get interrupted when Robbe’s dad calls. Again, not sure why we aren’t hearing both sides of the conversation? Because we’re in Robbe’s POV. Why wouldn’t we hear them? This seems like they just want to create some suspense or mystery over the situation with his parents. But it’s perfectly possible to do so while still letting us in on the phone calls. In fact, it’s arguably more intriguing to let us listen to some phone calls where we get some vague details but nowhere close to the whole story. It’s not like Robbe’s dad is going to explain the whole situation to his son in an exposition dump. We can get some crumbs to tease us, while still keeping us in Robbe’s POV and not feeling like the show is cutting corners.
Robbe gets mad at his dad and tells Noor he needs to be alone. Closeup on Noor as Robbe walks away. OK … why? Why on her and not Robbe when it’s his POV? Why the focus on Noor’s feelings when we really need to be establishing our protagonist’s mindset in the beginning of this season? I’m not saying her feelings don’t matter, I’m saying that well, this isn’t her story. It would be better to see Robbe’s pained reaction as he leaves.
Clip 6 - Robbe’s dad drama
Jens comes running up while Robbe is being sad. Robbe says that it may be necessary for him to stay with Jens because Robbe’s mom has been committed to a mental health institution and Robbe doesn’t want to stay with his dad. Ah, so I guess we’re hearing that right away. Which honestly makes not hearing his phone calls to his parents even funnier - like you lock us out of his POV arguably for the suspense, but then you end the suspense anyway by just telling us what happened a scene or two later? All right. I guess there’s suspense in that we don’t know exactly what’s up with the mom, mental health-wise, or the root of Robbe’s problems with his dad.
It occurs to me that maybe they just didn’t want to hire people to voice Robbe’s parents? Or put in the time to film both sides of the conversation? I have a hard time believing either of those because it’s so lazy, but.
I mean, just turn the phone conversations into text conversations if you’re not going to let us listen to Robbe’s parents on the other end.
They go and play football without really resolving the situation. Sad music plays while Robbe joins in. Also, someone was calling Robbe, and I assume it was his dad, but it’s not shown.
These clips are VERY short and choppy so far. You could easily combine the last two, so Robbe is with Jens instead of Noor when he gets the other phone call from his dad, leading into this conversation.
We know immediately about Robbe’s mom’s situation instead of it being a mystery, like with Isak. Which, again, isn’t inherently wrong, but then I want them to DO SOMETHING with it.
Clip 7 - Jens and Jana
Oh hey, Jana got her braces off! IDK if that happened last season or this one, but it was something I liked, seeing a teenage girl with braces on a teen drama. That rarely happens unless it’s a joke or a plot point.
OK, they really need to film Robbe’s phone so I can actually see who’s calling…
Jens tells Jana about Robbe’s parental situation. I’ll note that first she asks if something’s up with Noor, so news of the Robbe/Noor relationship must have traveled really fast since they’ve only just gotten together. Like Robbe and Noor are clearly dating, going off Jana’s comment, and not just hooking up. Then Belgian Magnus wants to know about hooking up with Amber. Meanwhile Robbe is having a conversation off screen with his dad? Guess it wasn’t important!
And that’s the problem, obviously. It’s his POV season, anything you decide to show SHOULD be important to his storyline.
Also … it’s fine that we’re focusing on Robbe’s shit home life since that’s relevant to his story, but almost nothing in these clips has set up Robbe’s attraction to men, and only slightly his lack of interest in girls, which was negated by him seeming very interested in a girl afterwards. And knowing how long this season takes to get going with the Even character, it’s a pretty glaring omission.
So we don’t see Robbe’s phone call with his dad, but he gets snappy about it when Jens asks. One of the boys (I can’t tell who) says that Robbe’s on his period. Gonna be real, I don’t care for this squad so far.
What was the point of this clip? We already know Robbe is having problems with his dad, which is the most relevant part to the plot here. We shouldn’t be wandering from Robbe’s POV so much, but even taking that into account … we already know Belgian Magnus likes Amber, so that’s not necessary to establish. And we didn’t need to see Jens tell Jana something we already know. I assume he tells her so Zoë can find out and offer a room, but there’s no reason to see Jens tell Jana this, so. Filler clip.
Clip 8 - Zoë and Robbe at the lockers
Yeah, Zoë offers Robbe a place to stay here, but again, we didn’t need to see the news travel down the Jens-Jana pipeline. It could have been condensed more efficiently.
Robbe doesn’t want to because he says his dad wouldn’t approve. Zoë says she hopes things get better with his mom and Robbe at first snaps and tells her to leave it, then says thanks. This is an actual good interaction, writing-wise, kudos.
I liked Zoë a lot in S1 and I like her here again. I really should watch her season despite my Noorhelm allergy. The scene of them kinda smiling at each other across the hallways reminds me that this is probably the strongest relationship in the whole season, tbh.
Why was this clip so short? So many of these clips could have been combined into one. I mean, Zoë could have said, “I heard from Jana who heard from Jens...” without us needing the previous clip. Although, did Robbe really want anyone else to know about his home life? Lol @ Jens just blabbing Robbe’s private business.
So I guess they didn’t set up the Eskild situation in S2 that would lead to Eskild offering Robbe a place to stay?
Clip 9 - Robbe gets roommates
Robbe is in Zoë’s room. He sees her “everyone you know is fighting a battle” quote next to the mirror, which is a detail I actually quite like in context with the rest of this storyline and Even’s condition. It’s a good Skam thesis overall.
I guess Zoë met with Robbe’s dad. Zoë calls him a tough cookie. Robbe doesn’t want to speak to him. They bond a little over their parental problems. Again, a nice detail.
Belgian Eskild appears and teases Robbe a little before announcing that Robbe’s dad has agreed to let him stay in the flat. Yay!
Oh, so Senne is staying there, too? At least they didn’t do a pointless Noorhelm breakup in this version.
Milan (the Eskild) tries to go in for a hug and Robbe isn’t cool with it, so at least that’s something with Robbe’s issues with men. (I think? The thing is, Robbe also does not really know Milan, so it’s not as weird that he’s not ready to be affectionate with a near-stranger.) (EDIT from the future: Keeping the S2 almost-kiss that’s referenced in the next clip in mind, I can rationalize this moment as a continuation of that awkwardness from Robbe’s POV.)
They chat with Lisa (Linn) who wants to direct Robbe on what he is and isn’t allowed to touch in her room, heh. Milan and Zoë have cute interaction, and Robbe looks happy. I do like the flatmate vibe so far, they seem fun.
Clip 10 - Robbe and Milan
Senne and Zoë get cute. I haven’t seen S2 so I can’t give my opinion on their version of Noorhelm, but I did think a few things about them were less creepy in wtFOCK’s S1 than in OG. Milan talks about how they’re a Disneylike couple and Robbe laughs.
Then Robbe apologizes for something that evidently happened in S2, where Milan tried to kiss Robbe at a party? Again, I didn’t see the scene. Milan says he’d never try to do that. He offers Robbe a hug, which he accepts - tbh I don’t know if Robbe SHOULD accept based on where he is in his character arc, maybe he should have more skittishness? But it’s a nice character moment, at least. They really have to make up for lost time with the Robbe-Milan relationship, so I can get that they need to establish some closeness fast.
Not being in the wtFOCK fandom, I kinda wonder if there was backlash to that scene from before and this is damage control, LMAO.
I feel like you could’ve tweaked this to be more representative of Robbe’s issues, like have him stress here that he’s not gay, because it’s a sweet scene but again, I don’t feel like this episode built up Robbe’s internal dilemma very well. You could make this not just about smoothing over whatever bump there was in this relationship, but also about setting up some internal tension with Robbe’s sexuality issues. Multi-tasking - it’s great!
EDIT from the future: OK, I tracked down the S2 scene, and yeah, while it illustrates some of Robbe’s internalized homophobia, I really think you needed to carry this through to this clip. Because that was a very public situation, and they made a point of emphasizing onlookers’ reactions. I feel like you need to show that Robbe’s internalized homophobia isn’t just about external reactions, but internal struggles, because ... so far, that’s what it is? Like what is he doing with Noor otherwise?
Clip 11 - Housewarming party
Party is underway. Yasmina is there and is friendly with Robbe. It sounds like they’re working on a school project together. Aaron (Magnus) and Moyo are talking about hot chicks again.
Noor arrives and the boys tease Robbe about how far he’s gone, Robbe looks pretty chill and happy until Moyo says Robbe’s getting laid tonight and you can see the nerves and reluctance take over. Okay! A character detail that actually works for his arc! Yes!
Partying, makeouts with Noor … sorry but they are wasting a lot of time with this relationship. ROBBE ISN’T INTO HER. Here’s the thing: I don’t want to demonize any of Evak’s female “love interests,” right? It’s pointless anyway because Evak is the endgame pairing, Sonja and Emma aren’t “threats” in the end, but also because they’re not bad people just for wanting to date these two guys who happens to want each other instead. And I think you can do interesting things with Sonja and Emma as characters. I’ve read Sonja fanfic that’s really good!
But when it comes down to it … this is not the story of Robbe/Noor, and there’s a point where it feels like there’s too much development for something that is really intended to be a speed bump in Robbe’s journey.
I guess it’s a pet peeve of mine when gay stories devote a ton of time to het relationships, to the point where it begins to overshadow the main gay relationship. Love, Victor did this to an absolutely ridiculous degree. (I actually made notes for Love, Victor reactions, but hesitated to post them because 60% consisted of me typing I DON’T CARE ABOUT THESE STRAIGHT ROMANCES.) And I GET it, this is an experience many gay kids go through in their coming out journey, but also, less charitably… you don’t need het romance to dominate everything. You don’t need to make this about how a gay person being gay hurts a straight person. I genuinely appreciate that once Isak kisses Even, it’s fucking over with him and Emma, that plot thread is done.
Anyway, Noor tells Robbe he’s so fucking hot and Robbe looks more uncomfortable, moreso when she wants to see his room and he goes off like he’s headed to Mordor.
Aaron checking out Amber … okay, again with all the het. I don’t care!!! This is not important right now!!
Noor pushes Robbe onto the bed, ugh please don’t have them Go There.
She takes off her top and Robbe touches her boob like he’s sticking his hand into a porta-potty. We see his discomfort so at least this part is effective and relevant to Robbe’s arc. Noor is taking off her bra when the boys come into the room, wanting the weed. Okay, you dumb fucks, you’re teasing your bro about getting laid and yet you think it’s cool to enter his room when he’s with a girl? I mean, that’s a lucky break for Robbe, but his friends are extra stupid.
The mood is killed, Robbe goes hunting for weed. Episode ends.
HOW I WOULD REWRITE THIS EPISODE:
Lmao, some of my changes sounded a lot like “be like OG Skam S3.” Because Skam S3 was well-written and made sense. But I tried to think of edits that worked with what wtFOCK was presenting, not just repeating OG.
(I’m also repeating a few things in this section that I said above, btw)
While this episode doesn’t make me angry or anything, it’s got a serious problem with dithering. The first clip is a solid start to the season, but afterwards, so many of these clips feel like filler. There’s a lack of substance to them. It was hard to write about them because they ended up feeling like two minutes of nothing.
Did we need to see repetitive mentions of Robbe’s troubled relationship with his dad? No, it’s an important plot detail but we could have established that more concisely in fewer clips. Did we need to see the process of how Robbe comes to stay with Zoë, Senne, and Milan? No, not really. Or at least not dragged out over at least three clips.
I don’t feel like I’m in Robbe’s head to the extent that I should be so far. Some of this is because the show just flat-out locks us out of his POV, like not showing the phone call in the Jens-Jana clip. But a lot of it is also because of the narrative dawdling. There’s just not as much to analyze unless I bring in Skam season 3 and project what we know about Isak onto Robbe. And that’s not a good way to adapt a story.
The framing of Robbe/Noor needs to change. Combine the bathroom intro with the aborted sex scene - the boys are sitting in the tub, teasing Robbe about getting laid, so he makes out with Noor and they go into a bedroom where he’s clearly not into this, and then Moyo and Aaron come in asking for weed because Robbe still actually has the weed from the bathtub at this point. Or do what Skam France did (can’t believe I’m referring to Skam France) and have the arrival of the cops interrupt the makeout/sex session and Robbe takes his cue to exit.
But frankly, it’s not great to have Robbe acting or looking too cozy with Noor, like this is a legitimate romantic arc except when it gets to the sex. The point is that this isn’t a romance. Even if you want to show some cuddly, non-sexual scenes with Noor, you have to show more of Robbe’s reluctance and fear throughout.
Show Robbe’s fucking phone conversations with his parents!!!! Good Lord. He’s not ordering a pizza. These are important aspects of his story. Capitalize on that family tension, show us what a bad place Robbe is in at the start of this season.
Now, about the lack of Even in this episode. Not introducing Even is a bold move, but not necessarily a smart one. Even’s introduction in Skam is not just the intro of “the love interest” - he’s the catalyst for almost everything in Isak’s story. Consider that in episode 1, Isak is seen mostly unhappy and bored - he’s distraught after kissing Emma, he’s checked out of his friends’ lunchtime girl talk, he zones out staring at his teacher’s boobs, he doesn’t want to be at kosegruppa. Isak is actually very passive and just going through the motions, doing what people tell him to do. But once Isak meets Even at kosegruppa - well, that’s when Isak wakes up. In the next few clips, we see Isak taking action. And sure, they’re small actions, searching for Even online, watching the Even video over and over, asking Vilde if there will be more kosegruppa meetings. But we can see that Isak now cares about something, he’s paying attention. Of course, Robbe’s story doesn’t have to follow the same arc. However, it does the season a huge benefit to get him intrigued by something at this point, so we the audience are not just sleepwalking along with him for a few episodes.
There’s also just the simple fact that we have only 10 episodes to establish a love story and make us care about the Even character, and it’s a very risky move to waste too much time. If you are really killing it with the rest of Robbe’s arc, this could still work, but ... well, that’s not what’s happening here.
If they didn’t want to full on introduce the Even directly, one thing they could do is subtly and indirectly find ways to include him in the narrative and create some mystery. Let’s say Robbe sees the Even’s artwork somewhere and is like whoa, that’s cool, and we can tell that it resonates with him. Or he admires Even’s graffiti, or it makes him laugh, whatever. Basically Robbe has some kind of emotional reaction to a thing the Even has created or done, which helps to set up that relationship even before we officially meet the Even.
If we want to add a little more, perhaps Robbe sees a mysterious dude in a mask tagging a wall, but they get interrupted by the cops or something and have some kind of brief but intriguing interaction with each other, and Robbe’s like, who was that guy in the mask? Or Noor takes Robbe to the tagging place, the police/security bust them, Robbe and Noor get separated, and Robbe gets helped out by the Even so he can escape. So it’s an important moment, lots of adrenaline, we can frame it like there’s a sudden ~charge~ between them (ooOOOooo the Even helped Robbe stand up and their hands touched like this was a fanfic, etc.), but he doesn’t learn Even’s name, maybe he doesn’t even see his face because Even has a mask on, so Robbe spends part of the next few episodes trying to figure out who that guy is, casually asking Noor if she knows a guy like that, keeping his eyes open. Maybe we have some fakeouts where Robbe thinks he sees the Even again but it’s just a false alarm. He’s on edge, eager to know more about that mystery guy, and so are we. Bam, we have “awakened” Robbe from his deep sleep.
If you’ve seen Netflix’s The Get Down, there’s even a scene like this where Jaden Smith’s character gets caught tagging by the cops, he runs and flees with another young dude, and they have a moment where they recognize each other as graffiti artists they admire. While watching that scene for the first time, without any context or spoilers, without even knowing if there would be LGBT content in that show, I immediately thought, “This guy is his love interest.” Not even because it was overtly romantic. Because the way it was written and shot told us that this meeting was important. Because they had an instant connection. Something similar could have worked for Robbe and his Even. But in any case: it would have been best to establish something between those characters, even if it wasn’t an “official” introduction.
Stop focusing on Aaron/Amber when it’s not in Robbe’s POV. Reverse the scene at the beginning with Aaron videotaping and Amber getting spilled on. She gets pissed, he falls in love, and then we follow him upstairs and we meet the boy squad. That is a very obvious, very clean transition that doesn’t interrupt Robbe’s POV as it technically hasn’t started yet. So IDK why they didn’t do that, lmao.
Some changes with the Milan relationship:
Tweak the apology scene to be more representative of Robbe’s issues. Have Robbe apologize while still stressing that he’s not gay. Have Milan be chill and not question that statement, but maybe Robbe is so defensive that it comes across as unconvincing.
Then have Milan be the one instead of the boys to interrupt the Noor almost-sex scene. Milan wanders in acting drunk, haha Milan, he’s wacky. Robbe doesn’t realize it (though the viewers do if they’re paying attention) but Milan is only pretending and is “subtly” rescuing Robbe because he realizes, based on the earlier scene, that Robbe might be struggling with his sexuality and he wants to give him an escape option. (Although I still think it’s best to combine the not-sex scene into the opening clip, but this could work, too.)
Basic questions we need to be asking, clip to clip: what is the conflict? Where is Robbe’s head right now? Why is this scene necessary? How did this scene come to be - what’s the cause and effect here? How does it advance Robbe’s story? Is it redundant? How do we tell this story in a narratively economical manner?

New tag game: Post pictures of your first ever (fictional/celeb) crush to the latest one and tag five others to continue the game
Thanks to @minmoyu for tagging me and ooof, are you sure you’re ready for this?!! :D I have been around/in fandom for a loooooong time and at first I thought, okay, no way I can list all my crushes, there have been SO many and we’ll be here all day but then as I started compiling a list I found I was having fun reminiscing and decided, what the heck, yeah, let’s do em all... or at least all I can remember! :D
There have absolutely for sure been other more minor crushes and passing fancies along the way, but these are the big ones that I remember (and that, in more recent years, I can track by going through my posted fanfics on AO3 and even *shudder* FFNET and seeing which shows I was into enough to want to write fic about the characters).
[Quick note: with rare exceptions, for actors I am listing them by the character they played rather than just the actor. Whilst there are actors that I like in multiple roles (and conversely, characters who on paper I would normally be into but are played by actors who do nothing for me, and hence the character generally does nothing for me either), for the most part it is the character I really have the crush on.]
I’m going to put this under a readmore cos it has gotten ridiculously long:
So... without further ado:
1. MORTEN HARKET from a-ha - OKay so, dating myself badly here but... I had the *biggest* crush on Morten Harket when I was a teenager. Pretty much the entirety of my side of the bedroom I shared with my sister was covered in posters of a-ha, and Morten in particular. I even had a heart-shaped Morten Harket pillow! :D I loved a-ha’s music (still do!) and I wanted to go see them in concert when I was 14 but my parents wouldn’t let me (*sob*). I did finally get to see them in concert in the early 2000s and they were BRILLIANT live (and Morten was still very very pretty)!
2. RICHARD DEAN ANDERSON as MACGYVER - MacGyver is the first tv character I remember being really into and having a crush on, to the extent that I would record episodes of the show off the tv (onto VHS tape - yes, I am *that* old!) so that I could rewatch them (especially the ones where he got hurt - yeah, I was a whumper even then! :D)
3. KEIFER SUTHERLAND - One of my rare exceptions. I think I first saw him in Lost Boys (and loved him in that film) but it was his role as Doc Scurlock in Young Guns that really made me fall for both the character and him. I definitely remember seeking out any and all films he was in and buying any magazine he was interviewed in (and knowing far more facts about him than was probably healthy! :D) and even drawing a fanart portrait of him. :)
4. KYLE MACLACHLAN as SPECIAL AGENT DALE COOPER - I remember hearing about Twin Peaks before it started airing in the UK and it sounded so different and interesting... I watched it from the very first episode and very quickly developed a crush on Coop.
5. BRENT SPINER as DATA - I think ST: TNG had been airing for a while before I stumbled across it but I quickly became hooked and Data was my favourite character right from the start. I definitely remember at one point buying an (unofficial) episode guide book so that I could look up which episodes were good Data-focused ones (especially ones where he got hurt! :D) so I could go out and buy the videos that had those episodes on (at the time the show was available to buy on VHS-tape with 2 episodes on each tape).
6. DAVID DUCHOVNY as FOX MULDER - Another show that I heard the buzz about and started watching right from the start and, like so many others, I immediately developed a crush on the snarky, enigmatic, troubled FBI agent with the weird name. The X-Files was the first show I ever tried writing (one, never-finished) fanfic for.
7. PAUL GROSS as BENTON FRASER - Man, Due South was such a good show! It was so quirky and clever and funny and Benton Fraser, with his huge heart and his serious demeanour and his gorgeous blue eyes, was just so darn attractive! He also got whumped a fair bit too! :D Due South was also the show that introduced me to the music of Sarah McLachlan (I was enough of a fan that I bought the show soundtrack on CD).
8. HUGH LAURIE as DR GREGORY HOUSE - This was a bit of an odd one for me because I had grown up knowing Hugh Laurie solely as a comedian/comic actor, known mostly for playing buffoons and genial idiots. And suddenly here he was with stubble, an American accent, and a limp, and he was hawt AF! :D It caused quite the feedback loop in my brain for a while which pretty much went “Wow, House is hot.... but it’s Hugh Laurie... but he’s hot... but it’s HUGH LAURIE!!1!”
I *loved* House (the first few seasons, at least) and oof a character with persistent pain (and a self-destructive streak a mile wide!) was a whumper’s dream. House was the first show for which I wrote - and published online - completed fanfics.
8. JOE FLANIGAN as JOHN SHEPPARD - Stargate Atlantis was my first proper online fandom, the first show I prolifically and repeatedly wrote fanfic for, and the first time I ever met in person an actor I was a big fan of (and while the show was still airing, to boot!). It was also my first introduction to the online community of whumpers! A bunch of us from the Shep Whump thread on Gateworld heard that Joe was going to be at a convention in London and we decided to book hotel rooms and meet up and go to the convention together and it was AWESOME! I can still remember seeing Joe *in person* for the first time and just,,,, struggling to believe he was actually here, in person, in front of me! He was super super lovely and humble too and took time to chat to everyone at the signing table and I clearly remember my brain just pretty much fritzing out during the photo session and being intensely aware of the sensation of Joe’s hand on my shoulder....
It was also super lovely to meet fellow fans, and online friends, in person for the first time and we had so much fun, and it kickstarted me going to lots of other conventions, including specific Stargate/SGA ones where I got to know lots of other lovely fans and online friends. I’ve met Joe about 4 or 5 times in total now and he’s been lovely every time.
9. PAUL BLACKTHORNE as HARRY DRESDEN - Gosh I loved the shortlived tv adaptation of The Dresden Files. I loved the fantasy aspect, the stories, the humour, and I especially loved Harry Dresden and how often he got whumped! :D
10. DAVID TENNANT as THE 10TH DOCTOR - I had watched the Christopher Ecclestone revival of Doctor Who and enjoyed it well enough but I can clearly remember watching David Tennant’s first episode as The Doctor - on Christmas Day, at my brother-in-law’s house - and being aware, as I watched it that... ooookay, yes, I’m in trouble here... I like him... I like him a lot... :D I mean, I’m sure the fact that he got whumped so thoroughly in his very first episode had nothing to do with how quickly I fell for him... right? :)
11. ALEX O’LAUGHLIN as MICK ST JOHN - Another show that ended far too soon and just as it was getting *seriously* good. But also a prime example of my point about having a crush on the character not the actor. I looooooved Alex as Mick St John... and yet in Hawaii 5.0 he pretty much does nothing for me (the character is too stoic and the whump often too unrealistically glossed over). Anyway, in Moonlight he was my favourite kind of character - angsty, brooding, dangerous AF when he needed to be... and essentially immortal so you could whump the heck out of him and he’d recover so you could whump him again! :D
12. SIMON BAKER as PATRICK JANE - There is so much to love about Patrick Jane... his smarts, his sass, his angst... and Simon is a rare “against type” blonde crush for me (you may have noticed by now that most of my crushes follow a similar physical aesthetic - tall, slim/wiry, and dark-haired) and again here I think my crush is almost all to do with the character rather than the actor.
12. BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH as SHERLOCK HOLMES - I’m almost ashamed to admit it, given the clusterfuck that both the show and its fandom became, but in the earlier seasons I had quite the crush on Benedict’s Sherlock (and okay, a little bit on Benedict himself - I did definitely enjoy some of his other roles too). It helps that I was already a huge fan of the Sherlock Holmes character (I’ve read all the stories and novels multiple times and was a big fan of the Granada adaptation starring Jeremy Brett - whose Holmes would definitely count as one of my more minor/passing crushes) already. Benedict is another crush that I have met in person, at a (actually, the first!) Sherlock convention and he was lovely in person - very genuine, very articulate and thoughtful.
13. TOM MISON as ICHABOD CRANE - I was excited for Sleepy Hollow as soon as I heard about it and I was SUCH a fan for the first couple of seasons (before TPTB completely destroyed it and it inevitably got cancelled (I didn’t even watch the last season and a half)) and Tom’s Ichabod (and his amazing chemistry with Nicole’s Abbie) was a large part of why. I also quickly became a big fan of Tom himself as he came across as so witty and self-deprecating and *fun* in all the behind the scenes/convention clips etc. I was lucky enough to also meet Tom at a convention and he genuinely is that witty and charming and lovely.
14. TOM WISDOM as ARCHANGEL MICHAEL - I think Dominion was possibly the first show that I got sucked into by seeing whumpy gifsets on tumblr! :D It was such a great show and also to date the most immersive, welcoming, cast-and-crew-interactive fandom I have ever been in. The cast and crew regularly live-tweeted the episodes, and interacted with fans on Twitter, and it was SO much fun. And Tom’s Michael was my favourite character right from the start - seemingly aloof but so much going on under the surface... and some really nice whump, especially in season 2! I was heartbroken when it was cancelled after only 2 seasons (and just as the plot was getting *really* interesting).
15. OLIVER JACKSON-COHEN as LUCAS - I was hooked on Emerald City right from the first episode. It was visually stunning, so atmospheric, and really intruiging. I love love loved Adria Arjona’s Dorothy (ngl, I had a bit of a crush on her too) and she and Lucas together were just... *chef’s kiss*. I mean... what an introduction to a character... she finds him crucified, bleeding, his wrists tied with barbed wire, and amnesiac.... and the whump only gets better and better from there on in! Like the entire first two episodes are just... Lucas whump! :D And his devotion to her... Emerald City was honestly the first show where I really got into a ship. I was *invested* in Dorcas, dammit! Aaaand sadly another excellent show that never made it past its first season.
16. JASON RALPH as QUENTIN COLDWATER - Another show that I watched right from the start, was heavily invested in.... and that the writers absolutely tanked and destroyed in later seasons. *cries* Quentin was such a brilliant viewpoint character for the show and I loved his awkwardness, and his angst, and his enthusiasm, and his adorable floppy hair... and how often he got whumped!
17. COLIN MORGAN - I fell for Colin in Merlin (which I stumbled upon late, long after it had finished airing, and hence was able to binge-watch the entire 5 seasons!) and liked him enough to seek out his other works, such as The Fall, and Humans, and The Living and the Dead, and he was brilliant (and very pretty) in all of them... and his characters also seem to get whumped quite a lot! :D
18. MATT LANTER as WYATT LOGAN - Wyatt was another of my favourite archetypes... absolutely badass and competent... but also tortured and angsty and capable of intense devotion. Another show that I watched because of whumpy gifs on tumblr and the second ever show where I actually got invested in a ship - Lyatt all the way, baby!! :D - aaaaaand yet another show cancelled before its time.
19. NOCTIS LUCIS CAELUM from FINAL FANTASY XV - my very first video game crush! I was recommended to play FFXV by fellow whumpers on the whumpshire discord because it was whumpy... and they were not wrong and I loved the game and I absolutely adored Noctis. FFXV is one of very very VERY few video games that I have actually played right through to the end. And possibly the only video game that has ever affected me to such an extent... I became so invested in the characters and their world and I actually found the last couple of chapters really hard to play because it was actually upsetting me emotionally. I had to take a break for a couple of weeks before I could go back and finish it!
20. CONNOR from DETROIT BECOME HUMAN - and from there I jumped straight into another video game crush! DBH was another game recommended to me for its whump potential and I, and many others, immediately fell in love with the quirky, sassy, self-sacrificing (if you play the game right!) “android sent by Cyberlife”. The game itself is really good too... although, I have tried to play through all the different endings to the story but have never yet managed to make myself play the machine Connor storyline.... I want to complete all the story branches... but I also just want Hank and Connor to be friends and to be happy! :D
21. ZHU YILONG - Ahhh... the beginning of the asian drama arc of my fandom life! I first came across Zhu Yilong after getting sucked into watching Guardian because of pretty (and whumpy) gifs on tumblr... and I’ve never looked back. He is one of the rare entries where I am pretty much guaranteed to like him in pretty much anything he does and my crush extends beyond Shen Wei, or his other characters, and into reblogging his fashion shoot photos, and keeping up with news of his work in general. He’s just... so darn pretty! And also so... blur! :D And the behind the scenes stuff and interviews of him with Bai Yu, during the Guardian era, just made me fall for him all the more. He’s also ridiculously talented - not only a fantastic actor, but a really good singer (I love his singing voice), he plays guitar and piano, and he can paint too!!
He’s also pretty much what made me start learning Chinese... because after Guardian I went seeking his other dramas to watch... only to find that many of them are only partially, or not at all, subbed. So I thought... why not try learning Chinese and then I’ll be able to watch his other shows? :D
21. JI CHANG WOOK - My first kdrama crush, and what a good one to start with! Healer was the first drama I ever watched and can you blame me for falling for JCW... especially when I followed up Healer with The K2?! I’ve liked him in pretty much everything I’ve watched him in. Although I do wish he would go back to doing more action-based shows as he is sooo good at them... but he seems to prefer the romcom genre these days, which is something I am nottt always a fan of tbh.
22. JAKE HSU as MENG SHAO FEI - Yet another show that I got sucked into by tumblr - and also one with a great, fun fandom through which I met lots of lovely people who I still follow/am mutuals with to this day. I just *adored* Jake’s character in History and I also loved the ship - Tang Fan and Meng Shaofei were awesome and adorable together and I was totally invested in both the ship and the gangster/cop/what happened years ago story happening alongside the ship. And Jake is just all kinds of cute.
23. XIAO ZHAN - Aaaand we are pretty much up to current day now... where The Untamed took over my life in the summer of 2019 and has yet to let me go. Xiao Zhan is another disgustingly talented human being - a fantastic singer and a really good actor, and also an artist - and he also just comes across as a genuinely sweet and charming person, and a very thoughful and earnest one too. And lbr he is ridiculously pretty, and his smile is just pure sunshine.
24. LEE DONG WOOK as LEE YEON - The most recent entry to the charts.... a Korean actor I was aware of but whose work I hadn’t watched and whose looks didn’t particularly seem to grab me... until I watched Tale of the Nine Tailed and fell head over heels for Lee Yeon (and daaayum does red hair suit LDW!!) and very quickly began to find LDW’s looks very appealing (and oh my, does Lee Yeon whump well!!). And yes, I have now started watching Goblin. :D
Phew! Aaaand we are done! I’ll admit, I did think of a few more as I was compiling this list but I decided to categorise them as more “minor” crushes and not include them... otherwise we really could be here all day!!
I’m going to tag: @sarah-yyy, @arlothia, @howdydowdy, @thepromiseweheldforlife and @the-wandering-whumper!

The 100 7x12 thoughts
I’m constantly amazed at how much The 100 manages to pack into one episode, which is why I have to rewatch each one at least once before I can gather my thoughts. It gives me hope, because even though we only have 4 episodes left, SO much can happen between now and then.
Although not surprising, I hated seeing Sachin’s and the Children of Gabriel’s deaths. That essentially means the end of all Sanctumites. Despite Monty’s edict to do better, it seems Bellamy, Clarke, and crew have indirectly brought about the destruction of another society, albeit a dysfunctional one.
I can’t tell if Gabriel’s comment to Bellamy that he looks good in white was meant to be snarky, flirting, or hiding a deeper meaning. But it was unexpected, to say the least!
So Bellamy is testing Cadogan’s attachment to Anders. Does that mean he’s not fully brainwashed? Plus, he’s also bargaining for his friends’ lives. The old Bellamy is still in there somewhere.
The scene between Jordan and Hope was incredibly moving and sweet. These two really are the “odd ones out,” and it was nice to see that the writers acknowledged that and used that to forge a tentative bond between them. They are technically the next generation of the human race, along with Madi and the other kids.
The roommate pairings are so significant. In one room, Bellamy’s new family. In the other, his old family. I know Bellamy has known Raven from the beginning, but they truly became family on the Ring. The fact that Bellamy sent her off to M-Cap so easily was chilling. And I wish they had shown Raven in M-Cap - I hate how insignificant her character has become this season.
The scene between Bellamy and Echo was understated but powerful. Huge hats off to Tasya Teles for that scene - she acted brilliantly. Both of their voices were low, deep with emotion. This was a defining moment for Echo - until now, she has blindly followed her leaders. Queen Nia, Roan, and now Bellamy. And unknowingly, she has been working against the very people her leader and love, Bellamy, fully supports. So she is at a crossroads here. Her last question to him, “Is this thing you believe really that important? Is it more important than us?” is huge. And the “us” can be interpreted two ways - “us” as the entire group, or “us” as in Bellamy and Echo and their relationship. I think that’s why there’s such confusion as to whether they broke up when Bellamy answered “yes.” And the way Echo reacts is telling - she is struggling with herself. Should she follow her leader, Bellamy, as she’s always done, and support the Shepherd? Or does she finally break away and follow her own beliefs?
And in stark contrast, we have the Bellamy and Clarke scene. Where Bellamy and Echo were quiet, Bellamy and Clarke are passionate, fighting to get through to one another. Bellamy shared his life-altering experience in Etherea with them, which he didn’t with Echo. And when Clarke starts breaking apart, telling Bellamy she doesn’t even recognize him, he starts breaking too. He reminds her that he is the person who brought her back from the dead, who fought for her. Of all the things he could have reminded her of, I think it’s telling that this is what he chooses to try to reach her with. And my heart broke when Bellamy asked her to believe in him. He didn’t ask Echo to do the same - he basically told her what he believes, and that was that. He asked Clarke to believe in him because he NEEDS her to. When they are at odds with each other, neither one of them is whole. It’s only when they both believe in the same thing that they are complete, and Bellamy knows this, consciously or subconsciously.
It’s interesting, because I think this scene was meant to show us how Bellamy is NOT fully brainwashed. Yes, he believes in the final war and transcendence, but his first priority is still to save his friends, to save Clarke. The way he said “I am trying to save YOU,” to Clarke was so raw and full of emotion. This is the woman he just pulled from the brink of death mere months ago. He has had to grieve her death not once, but TWICE. He CANNOT go through that again. Bellamy is trying to work with his head and his heart. His heart wants to believe in Cadogan fully, but his head is coming up with a plan to save his friends, because his heart still loves Clarke and his friends - Cadogan doesn’t fully own it yet.
I know Clarke calling Bellamy her best friend has riled some people, but he IS her best friend. The foundation of the strongest love is friendship. And what else would she call him? She can’t say “the man I love is standing in front of me,” because she still believes he’s with Echo.
I am so, so happy to see Octavia and Clarke reconnecting with each other. These two have been together since the drop ship, and their relationship has gone through so many ups and downs. For Octavia to say that she finally understands Clarke is huge, because these two women have not always seen eye to eye on things.
Octavia has also been observer #1 of Bellamy and Clarke’s relationship. She has seen them love each other, fight with each other, fight FOR each other. It’s telling that she lets Clarke get in Bellamy’s face while she hangs back. Partly because O knows that she hasn’t yet fully mended her relationship with Bellamy the way Clarke has. But also because she knows that the only one who can get through to Bellamy is Clarke, and vice versa. I also love how she comforted Clarke when Bellamy refused to listen to them, and tried to fight when Bellamy sent her off to M-Cap.
Doucette had grown on me in Etherea, but now he just seems creepy.
Bellamy can’t even stand to watch Clarke being tortured in M-Cap. Every time he looks at her, he has to look away. And when he can’t take it anymore, he tries to convince Cadogan that Clarke doesn’t know where the Flame is. So much for not lying to the Shepherd. He’ll absolutely do just that where Clarke is concerned. And Bellamy’s wince when Clarke finally agrees to help Cadogan after he threatens to send one of her friends to Penance - Bellamy knows Clarke, and he knows she will always sacrifice herself to save her friends. This is a HUGE parallel to CoL-Abby, who said to torture her friends to get Clarke to break. Abby was fully brainwashed, and knew that the quickest way to get to Clarke is to threaten her friends. Bellamy also knows this, but he did not offer that knowledge up to Cadogan. Again, I think we’re seeing signs that Bellamy is not fully brainwashed. And the way he looked at Cadogan when he said “she knows, or she wouldn’t be fighting,” had a hint of disgust - Bellamy does not want to follow a Shepherd who tortures people to get what he wants. The cracks are starting to deepen in Bellamy’s brainwashing here.
My two cents on “It didn’t have to be this way.” “Yes it did.” - I think Bellamy was honestly trying to save his friends with the least amount of damage caused. In his mind, Clarke tells them where the Flame is, they give it to Cadogan, his friends are safe, and they all transcend. Clarke’s response is more cryptic. I interpreted her “Yes, it did,” to mean that she wanted Bellamy to witness her torture so that he can realize that Cadogan is a monster. She knows this is the only way to get through to him. Clarke is trying to save Bellamy, just as much as he is trying to save her. This is a direct parallel to season 6. Bellamy fought to save Clarke from Josephine, who was controlling her mind. Clarke is fighting to save Bellamy from Cadogan, who is controlling his mind.
I’m so over Shidheida. He can take his OTT outfit, OTT throne, and get the hell out of here.
I LOVE Murphy and Emori this episode. My love for them has steadily been growing, and I especially love how protective they are of Madi. I’m wondering if this is setting them up to become Madi’s parents when Clarke and Bellamy go off to take the final test and perhaps have their Marperly ever after ending. I would be sad for Madi to lose Clarke, but I’m glad of the relationship she’s developing with Murphy and Emori. Plus, if this theory is correct, that means that Murphy would actually live!
Miller is so freaking underutilized this season, and it breaks my heart. He’s one of the original 100. His scene with Bellamy was cut this episode, and I was really looking forward to it. Bellamy trusted Miller before he trusted most others, and they go way back. With so few episodes left, it was a huge missed opportunity to acknowledge their bond. It’s telling that he looked to Clarke for confirmation as to whether she’s good with what’s happening. Clearly, he has lost faith in Bellamy for now.
From a narrative standpoint, Echo and Bellamy are now separated until we don’t know what episode. Whether Bellarke becomes canon or not, clearly the writers did not feel it was important to keep Becho together this close to the end of the story, yet they kept Bellarke together and on the same planet. Where this leads, we shall see.
Murphy’s little smirk when he sees Clarke is everything. That was a total cockroach moment. It’s also indicative of how much respect and affection Murphy has for Clarke. He missed her, and he knows she’ll find a way to fix the mess they’re in, like she always does. Clarke’s reaction “What the hell happened here?” was writing gold. I don’t care if they moved the stone into the castle just for this scene - it was a great way to end the episode!
Wow, this got way longer than I expected. If you read it all the way through, thank you! Please share your thoughts!

A Pirate’s Life For Me
Masterlist.
Requests.
Prompt: Does he know about the baby?
Summary: Killian sets off on one of his long journeys without knowing that his wife is pregnant with his child. When he returns he is in for a surprise.
Warnings: None
Pairing: Killian Jones X Reader
Word Count: 7,005
A/N: The more I went back and read over this the more I hated it lmao. I’m struggling :’).... I’m currently rewatching OUAT so I am kind of on a Killian spree even though I’m still in season 1 and haven’t re-met him yet. Also for my Hobbit followers, I a thinking about rewriting some of the series that I started and never finished so keep an eye out!
Eyes closed. Bodies knitted together. You stirred slightly a yawn escaping your lips. You scrunched your nose your stomach turning. You let out a soft groan nuzzling your face into the warm body snuggled around you. "Good morning love," Killian murmured, his nose pressing into your hair. You groaned again drawing a soft chuckle to rise from his chest. It vibrated your body peacefully. You drew your hands off of him and placed them between your bodies. You shoved gently. He pulled away from you untangling your legs and his arms. You opened your eyes blinking at the light in the cabin. You propped yourself up for a moment appreciating Killian who was laying on his back. You crawled over to him and propped your upper half on his chest. You stroked over his chest soothing the hairs across it. His ocean eyes met yours and he smiled tiredly. You leaned forward and captured his soft lips with yours. The moment was short, but welcomed. You sat up fully and slowly moved off of the bed. "Where are you off to love?" he questioned, sitting up. "I don't feel the best," you replied. You headed up onto the deck crew members nodding to you in welcome as you passed. You approached the edge of the ship and rested your arms on the wood. You looked out over the shining water letting your stomach turn. "Morning Miss!" Smee chirped, startling you. He bowed his head in apology. "Are you feeling alright?" He asked, leaning on the wood next to you. "Fine thank you, just a little woosey is all," you answered, calmly. He opened his mouth to speak but paused as Killian stood over his shoulder. "Feel better (F/N)," he smiled, comfortingly. "Thank you." Smee went back to work allowing Killian to take his place. You glanced over at Killian who had now slipped on a black tunic. His hand came to gently rub your lower back. "What's gotten into you love? This is the fourth time this week," He kept rubbing your back. "I don't know," you answered, vaguely. "Captain! We've got company!" Smee called. Killian's attention turned to where Smee was pointing. It was a small ship approaching. "Go below deck love. Get some rest," Killian encouraged. You nodded. You headed below deck deciding to change out of your night clothes.
You came onto the deck seeing the small ship next to the Jolly Roger. You spotted Killian and Smee on the other ship along with some of his men.
"What's going on?"
You asked, one of men. They shrugged in response causing you to roll your eyes. You walked over the plank and onto the other ship. All eyes were drawn to you. The strangers on the ship looked you over.
"She cannot go with you," one of the men said, suddenly. You assumed he was the captain.
"And why is that?" Killian questioned, hotly.
"Kil, what's going on?" You huffed, coming to stand next to him.
"They will tear her apart if they even catch her scent," the man explained. Confusion washed over you. Killian turned to you.
"I will explain later love," Killian said, gently. His attention turned back to the man. You reached out and touched your fingers against his hook showing your concern.
"Will you do it Captain?" Killian looked at you for a moment pondering the question. He looked back at the man and nodded.
"It will be done. I will be in Sherwood once it is complete," Killian explained. The two shook hands. You wrapped your fingers around Killian's hook fully and followed him back onto the Jolly Roger. You watched as the other boat pulled away.
"What was that all about?" You asked, letting go of his hook as he approached the helm and his wheel. You stood at his side as he began to steer.
"They wanted our help recovering a lost item," Killian answered.
"When did you start helping recover lost items?" You giggled.
"Since they started paying a large payment," he replied, shooting you a side smirk. You nudged into him smiling back. Your stomach tightened a little. You rested your hand over your stomach.
"So what's the item you have to retrieve?"
"A necklace. Simple I know, but the paid a fantastic price," Killian answered. You nodded looking out over the boat. Your eyes met Smee for a moment. He was giving you a strange look. You looked away from him. You were uneasy and you weren't sure why.
...
You helped unload the ship taking the barrels to the nearest market. You set down your last barrel your arms shaking unexplainably. You'd never had problems carrying barrels before. You exhaled a sharp breath a sudden exhaustion washing over you. You swayed on your feet. "(F/N) are you okay?" One of Killian's men asked. He came to your side wrapping an warm securely around the small of your back. You leaned your weight against the crewman.
"I just need to rest," you breathed, the weight of exhaustion growing. Your eyes were heavy, but you kept them open. The crewman began to walk you from the market and back toward the ship. He helped you onto the ship setting you down on the stairs to the helm.
"Would you like me to fetch the Captain?" You shook your head.
"I'll be alright, thank you."
You bowed your head in dismissal. The crewman scurried off leaving you alone on the ship. You leaned back against the stairs letting yourself settle from the sudden exhaustion. Once you deemed yourself worthy of standing you did. You moved off of the stairs and paced around the boat a few times before deciding to go back into the town. It was a decent sized village holding stone buildings and stone pathways throughout the town. It was quite nice compared to some of the villages you normally visited.
You found your way back to the market taking the the details you hadn't noticed before. You passed by the small wooden shops appreciating some of the items that were for sale. "Miss! Miss!" You whirled around as a hand grabbed the bend of your arm. You tore away your hand flying to the hilt of your sword. You didn't draw it as your eyes landed on a young boy around the age of fifteen.
"Sorry- I didn't mean to startle you," he stammered.
"What do you want?" You asked, remaining calm. You didn't enjoy being touched by strangers.
"You came in with the pirates?" You nodded in confirmation.
"My- my grandma has been waiting for you," he said, suddenly. You cocked a brow resting a hand on your hip.
"Is that so?" You huffed, in disbelief.
"Look kid if you're trying to rob me of my gold you might as well forget it," you warned. He shook his head. He pointed to a booth that you had passed a while ago. You hadn't noticed the elder woman sitting behind it before. You let out a heavy sigh.
"What do you want kid?" You asked, impatiently.
"She asked me to fetch you." The boy seemed intimidated by you, which is what you intended. You rolled your eyes. You'd rumor the boy and his ancient grandma. You followed the boy back to the booth standing in front of it.
"(F/N) Jones," the elder rasped. Your eyes widened. You'd never been to this village before yet the old crow knew your name. Your interest was peaked.
"Do I know you?" You questioned, humoring her.
"No my dear, but I know you," she replied, her small eyes meeting yours. You crossed your arms across your body looking down your nose at her. You were Killian's wife after all. It was very possible that people would know your name alongside his.
"I have seen you," the lady added. You said nothing your gaze turning to the boy.
"My grandma is a witch. She was blessed with the sight of the future," the boy explained. You grew impatient.
"Alright, humor me, what have you seen?" You were slightly annoyed, but you couldn't truly place why.
"You carry the pirate's child," she blurted. Your breath hitched in your throat.
"How the bloody hell do you know that?" You hissed, placing your hands on the small wooden table between you and her. She smiled brightly.
"I have seen it dear!" She chirped.
"He does not know, yet he is about to leave on a long journey," she continued, her eyes traveling to your stomach.
"It won't be that long," you replied. She laughed.
"It will be much longer than you expect dear." You stayed in your position.
"Tell me more." Your curiosity had definitely peaked now.
"I cannot tell you much my dear only that you needn't worry and that you should be careful," she warned, standing from her small chair.
"Careful of what?" You watched as the small woman retrieved a pendant from a bag behind her chair. She offered it out to you and you took it.
"Keep this with you dear. It will protect you and your beloved child," her smile was kind. Your head was reeling with questions. You turned on your heel and began to walk away.
"You mustn't tell him!" she called, after you. You paused in your steps for a brief second before carrying on. You tucked the pendant into a leather satchel on your hip and carried on.
...
You entered the tavern instantly spotting Killian and his crew. This was normal for them. When they were about to embark on a journey they would drink the night away. Normally you'd join them, but you'd refrained after discovering your pregnancy. It saddened you because you missed the soothing burn of rum down your throat. Killian's crew cheered as you approached. In their group were a few women sitting with some of the crew. Each of them had their eyes clearly on Killian.
"My love!" He chirped, as you sat down on his leg. His body was angled so that one of his legs was outside the table. You perched yourself leaning back against his strong shoulder.
"Husband,"you purred, catching the hot stares from the women in the group. Killian had always been a favorite the ladies, but he gave them up once he met you. You always enjoyed watching the jealous looks you received. His hook rested softly against your side drawing you more onto his thigh. He leaned you down enough to press a chaste kiss against the corner of your mouth. You could smell the rum on his breath as he pulled away.
"What are you boys up to?" You asked, turning your attention to the table.
"Dice!" Smee cheered. By the looks of it Killian was losing, which was always fun to watch. They returned to their game and you stayed put for the moment. You laughed along with the crew enjoying their company.
After a while Killian's hook slid to your back signaling that his leg had grown tired. You slid off of him and placed yourself next to him. Your thigh pressed against his as you rested your arms on the table watching the round come to an end.
"Would you like to join us (F/N)?" One of the crewmen asked.
"I'd love to!" Killian frowned.
"We shouldn't drag the lady into our bets," he suggested.
"Why, afraid you'll lose?" You challenged. The crew hooped and hollered causing Killian's brow to come together. As much as the pirate wouldn't admit it he was terrible at betting. He never played fair because he was so bad at it. It always made you laugh. The men dealt you in and you placed your first bet. Just one gold coin along with the men.
...
The betting lasted for hours. By the time the tavern was ready to close down for the night you and some of the crew had racked up a decent amount of gold. Killian was practically broke. Everyone stood up and drank their final drinks before drunkenly stumbling back to the ship. You helped Killian along giggled at the nonsense that left his mouth. You wished you had a way to keep track of all the things he said while he was drunk. You helped him into the captain's quarters laughing as he flopped down onto the bed face first.
You changed out of your clothes and crawled onto the bed next to him. You'd snagged a small bottle of foggy liquid from the night stand and pushed him onto his back. He groaned at the sight of it.
"Drink," you said, offering it to him. He shook his head and tried to roll over again. You grabbed his shoulder and kept him on his back.
"You're acting like a child now drink," you ordered. You couldn't help but smile as he whined.
"Killian Jones," you huffed. He let out a long groan and sat up snatching the bottle from your hands and downing it. Hr handed the empty bottle back to you and laid back down. You laid down next to him resting your head over his heart. The smooth rhythm was relaxing.
"I love you (F/N)," he slurred, his hand gently stroking through your hair.
"I love you too Killian," you yawned. You snuggled up closer one of your hands carefully fisting the soft black fabric of his tunic. Your eyes slid closed allowing you to drift off.
...
You stirred to a gentle hand rubbing circles against your shoulder."Rise and shine love." Killian's voice was soft. You lifted your head to meet his tired gaze. You appreciated that Killian didn't struggle much with hangovers; unlike his men who would be dead on their feet. You sat up drawing Killian up with you.
"So what's the plan captain?" You yawned, keeping your voice down. You could tell by the light in the cabin that it was pretty early in the morning.
"We set out in a few hours love. You're staying here," Killian explained, plainly. You raised your brows.
"You aren't leaving me here," you protested. He sighed and shook his head. He stood from the bed and paced about the room.
"It will be very dangerous love."
"Which is more of a reason for me to go with you!"
"No."Killian was stern. He approached you and got on his knees between your legs. You were sitting on the edge of the bed.
"I need to know that you are safe," he explained, staying calm.
"And how am I going to know that you are safe?" You countered. The woman's words suddenly played in your head.
"You needn't worry." Killian stood again and went behind his desk. He opened the top drawer and pulled out two necklaces each holding a shell on it. He sat between your legs again and offered you one of the necklaces.
"I didn't think I would ever have to use these again, but.."he paused.
"It is a way of communication love. With these we can speak to each other anywhere."
He slid his around his neck tapping it with his finger. You slid yours around your neck as well looking down at Killian.
"Can you at least tell me where you are off to?" He shook his head. His hand came up to take one of yours. You used your other hand and grabbed his hook holding it as well.
"It won't be a long journey love, maybe a few weeks at the most."
"It will be much longer than you expect."
You sighed and leaned down pressing your forehead to his. "What shall I do while you're away?" you whimpered. Rarely did he leave you behind for journey's, but when he did you were beside yourself.
"Enjoy the village love. It is much larger than you think and holds more things than you know," he said, vaguely. You gave him a bland look drawing a chuckle from him. He stood to his feet. Before he could escape you hooked your feet around his and held him in place. You slid closer to him and wrapped your arms around him. Your head rested against his stomach. His hand stroked through your hair.
"I must prepare for the journey love. Why don't you go and find yourself a room at the inn?" He suggested. You released him and stood up as well.
"Fine, but only because I want to and not because you told me to," you huffed, playfully.
"Of course love," he smiled, fondly. You changed into your clothes and headed up onto the deck with Killian behind you. Most of the crew was already awake and dragging around like zombies. You kissed Killian briefly before heading into the town.
...
You'd found yourself a nice room in the inn and paid for the first week. You found yourself walking through the market again. You nodded at the elderly woman as you passed and she returned it. Your hand went into your satchel feeling the small pendant under your fingers. You continued your journey through the market not buying anything yet. You didn't need anything extra right now.
...
A few hours had passed and you made your way back to the ship after meeting Smee. He was bringing the last of the supplies in. You boarded the ship not seeing Killian. "He's in his cabin," Smee directed. You nodded your thanks and headed there only for Killian to emerge.
"My love," he smiled, meeting you halfway. You wrapped your arms around. his neck in a hug.
"Must you really go without me?" You whined, not letting go. He eventually pushed you back.
"I wouldn't if I didn't have to love. I promise you that our journey will be as short as we can manage." He kissed you holding onto you like he'd never see you again.
"Stay safe Killian," you murmured, once he released you. And idea seemed to spark within his eyes.
"Smee!" He called. His first mate scurried to him.
"Yes Captain?" He bowed.
"I want you to stay here with (F/N)," he ordered. You and Smee gasped.
"Killian there is no need-" "It has been decided. I trust that you'll look after him (F/N)," Killian said, teasing Smee. Smee sighed in submission. He was clearly upset that he wouldn't be going with them.
"I'll watch over him Captain," you teased, as well. Smee let out a playful sigh of agitation. With one last kiss you and Smee unloaded yourselves from the ship. You both watched as it pulled away from the dock and off into the sea.
"Come Smee I'm dying for a meal!" With that the pair of you made your way to the tavern.
...
Weeks had gone by and things had definitely gotten more difficult. You'd changed from your normal pirate attire to a simple dress determined to hide the small bump forming. You weren't ready for anyone to know, but it was growing difficult to lie about. You walked through the market a basket on your arm. You'd taken up a job at the tavern once the collection of gold the two of you had was depleted. You gathered up a few loaves of bread in your basket along with a few other items that the owner of the tavern had asked you to get.
You passed by the elderly woman, Raia, daily deciding that she was a friend. You'd stop and chat with her each time learning new things about her. She also had fantastic tips for taking care of children which would come in handy. The boy had lost his parents when he was young which is why he stayed with her and how she knew such wonderful tips. You fled the market and headed back to the tavern.
You had stopped waiting for Killian. According to Raia Killian wouldn't return until after the birth of your baby which disappointed you. You set the basket down on the counter smiling as the bartender approached you. He was also the owner. "Thank you (F/N). I'm sorry that I keep having you fetch things for me," he stammered, rubbing the back of his neck. You waved him off.
"Don't mention it Lane. It's not a problem, really," you chirped. He returned your smile and took the basket into the back room. You came around the counter and followed him into the back room.
"So (F/N), when are you planning to tell everyone?" He asked, suddenly. You tilted your head a little.
"Tell everyone what?" You asked, innocently. He laughed coming to stand in front of you.
"That you're carrying a little bundle of joy," he said, sweetly. Your eyes widened and your cheeks darkened slightly.
"H- How can you tell?" You questioned, your hands coming to cover your stomach.
"You forget dear I have children," he chuckled.
"My wife acted exactly the same when she was pregnant, not to mention it isn't hidden as well as you think it is," he added. You groaned. Lane pulled you into a comforting hug.
"Did you tell him?" He asked, after he pulled back. You shook your head. Lane gasped.
"Why not dear?" He was genuinely concerned.
"Did you not want this? Did something bad happen?" He had a tendency to jump to conclusions.
"No no! We've been trying.. It's just-" you hesitated.
"I didn't think that I could actually have kids.. We lost hope after the second..." You cut yourself off.
"Oh dear," he hugged you again.
"I'm terribly sorry (F/N)." He was genuine. You pushed the memories from your head.
"But- if I may ask, why didn't you tell him?" He'd released you again.
"Raia," you replied, shortly. He mouthed a silent 'oh'. Everyone in the town knew that Raia's word goes. She was the town seer and had never been wrong yet! You'd heard that her old age had only made her wiser as well.
"Does your friend know?"
"Does her friend know what?" Your heart dropped in your chest. You slowly turned on your heels to see Smee leaning against the doorframe. He had quite literally been your little stalker since Killian had left.
"Nothing Smee," you replied, walking toward him. You snatched the red hat from his head and pushed past him.
"Hey!" He protested, following after you. You slipped it onto your head and paced around the tavern. It was pretty much empty except for the few daily people. You paid no mind to them as they paid no mind to you. After a few laps you returned the hat to Smee.
"Alright (F/N), you might as well tell me what's going on know," he huffed, crossing his arms across his chubby chest. You rolled your eyes.
"I really don't have to explain myself to you Smee." You weren't wrong. Smee had become a thorn in your side. He frowned drawing his brows together.
"(F/N) if you don't tell me-"
"What, you'll call Killian? In case you forgot Smee you broke the shell," you snapped. He went quite.
"I'll tell him when he returns," he piped, trying to fix his lost cause.
"Then you'll be waiting for a while," you scoffed. You walked past him only for him to grab your arm. You pulled your arm from his grasp.
"Don't touch me," you hissed. Smee glared up at you. He was shorter than you by a good few inches.
"What are you hiding (F/N)? Is it another man? Or a woman?" He prodded. You grew frustrated with the first mate.
"I'm pregnant you moron!" You snarled. You hadn't intended to say that.
"Congrats," one of the locals called. If this was under better terms you would've laughed, but you just nodded your thanks instead. You turned away from Smee and headed toward your shared room. He was hot on your heels.
"So it is a man then? What the Captain leaves for a few weeks and you just up and decide to go with someone else?" He growled, as you two entered the room.
"It's Killian's you idiot!" you yelled. Smee went dead silent.
"Why the bloody hell do you think it would be someone else's! I love Killian with every fiber of my being why would I tarnish that?" Tears formed in your eyes. You weren't upset with Smee you were angry with him. You were angry that you hadn't told Killian. You were angry that this couldn't have happened the first time.
"Does he know about the baby?" Smee's voice had softened.
"No he doesn't bloody know! If he did he wouldn't have went off to find that damned necklace!" You shouted, tears bursting out onto your cheeks. The anger had faded quickly being replaced with frustration and guilt. You dropped down onto your bed burying your face in your hands.
"I couldn't tell him.. Not until I was sure," you sniffed, trying your best to regain your composure.
"I couldn't do that to him again... I couldn't do that to myself." You broke down into a sob unable to control the guilt that flooded through you.
"It- It's okay (F/N)." Smee tried to comfort you sitting on the bed next to you. You leaned against Smee continuing to sob.
"I'm sure he'll be thrilled when he finds out." He kept trying to comfort you. You hoped that Smee was right.
...
Multiple months had passed. You carried a tray in your hand your other resting on your large stomach. You stopped at one of the tables and served them their drinks. "How much longer (F/N)?" One of the men asked.
"Sometime this week according to Raia," you smiled. They nodded excitedly. You'd settled into the town nicely. You swore that some of the residents were more excited about this baby than you were and that was saying something! You'd never been so excited in your life! Well... Except for the time you'd beaten Killian in a sparring match. Seeing him on his back was definitely a change that you quite enjoyed. You giggled at the memory as it raced through your head. You went back to the counter and sat down at one of the benches. You placed your tray aside and caressed your stomach.
"You should rest (F/N)," Lane suggested, walking over to you.
"What do you think I'm doing?" You huffed, playfully. You looked around the tavern toward the tables where Killian and his men had taken. You could practically hear their laughter echoing in your mind. You cringed slightly as pain jolted through your body.
"Are you alright?" Lane questioned. You nodded biting the inside of your cheek. It was worse than the usual pain you'd been having.
"(F/N)! (F/N)!" Smee burst into the tavern and ran toward you.
"Easy Smee, you might strain something," you giggled, the pain settling.
"I received word from the Captain!" He squealed. Your heart seemed to flutter.
"And?" You encouraged, your eyes lighting up.
"They'll be returning in a few weeks!" he yipped. A few weeks was still a long wait, but it was good news. You weren't sure how they'd gotten in contact, but that didn't matter to you.
"You didn't tell him did you?" Smee shook his head in confirmation.
"He knows nothing. Your surprise is still intact!" He beamed. You stilled a wetness pooling between your legs. Your eyes widened.
"Good, because I think the surprise is coming,"
...
In your arms she laid. She was beautiful in your eyes. You cradled her against your body smiling tiredly down at her. "What are you going to name her?" Raia asked, standing next to you along with a few other women that had helped you. You pondered the question. Only one name had stirred within you.
"Alice," you purred, pressing a kiss to her tiny forehead. The women cooed I agreement.
"Beautiful. You should rest (F/N). We will watch over her for you," Raia soothed, offering her arms to you. You didn't want to part with your new joy, but you knew that Raia was right. You handed off Alice concern flashing in your eyes as Raia began to walk away. She dismissed the other women.
"Rest (F/N). We will be here when you wake," she murmured, sitting down in a wooden rocking chair across the room. You carefully brought yourself down into a comfortable position. You'd be sore for weeks. You chuckled lightly at the thought. You weren't sure why but it was funny. You brought your hands to your stomach and closed your eyes. You were grateful for the sleep that overcame you.
...
"Charms! Please get you charms before it is too late!" The boy called. You walked down the market spotting the young boy.
"What's going on?" You asked, walking up to him.
"Grandma had predicted a curse. A curse that will send everyone away. She's made charms to keep people safe," he explained, breathlessly. Your eyes went to her booth. She was swarmed by people. You patted the boys shoulder and walked toward her booth. The crowd split allowing you through.
"Raia?" She smiled up at you.
"Why hello dear! How are you feeling?" She chirped, not seeming worried by any of the things she predicted.
"I have been better thank you; what's going on?" She patted an empty chair next to her and you took the offer. You were happy that Smee was watching over Alice otherwise the noise of the market would have upset her.
"A curse my dear. The Evil Queen has found a curse that is going to separate us from our homes and send us to a strange world," she explained, calmly. She continued to hand out her small charms.
"What are we to do?" You asked.
"These will keep everyone together. I am unsure if it will keep us in this world, but they will at least keep families together." You frowned sadly slumping against the chair. Your family wasn't complete. Worry tugged at your gut. What if you were sent away without Killian? Raia's hand gently grasped yours.
"Take a deep breath dear. You'll be alright," she soothed.
"You will be reunited with your husband soon," she smiled. You took a deep breath and calmed yourself down as best as you could.
"May I have one of those charms?" You said, shyly. She let out a laugh.
"You don't need one dear!" she chirped, handing out another. You gave her a confused tilt of your head.
She looked at me and pointed to the necklace that hung around my neck. "You already have one," her smile stayed warm. You touched the necklace around my neck. You'd decided to hook the small pendant onto a leather string. It was too beautiful to leave in the satchel you'd stuffed it in your first day here.
"You've known that long?" You questioned. She nodded in confirmation.
"Then why tell only me?"
"Because you are special dear." You opened my mouth to speak again, but she'd turned her full attention back to the task at hand. You joined her scooping up some of the charms and handing them to anyone who wanted them. She wasn't having anyone pay for them which was kind of her. You would've made people pay you thought
You chuckled to yourself. That was your pirate lifestyle thinking. You kept handing out charms until there were no more to give. The crowd was completely gone which made you assume that she'd made enough for the whole village. She reached into her pocket and pulled out two more charms. "For Smee and Alice," she encouraged, placing them in your hands. You nodded your thanks and stood as the boy returned. He took your place next to his grandma.
"Farewell Raia!" You called, over your shoulder as you began to leave.
"Farewell dear," her voice answered. You headed back to the tavern and into your room. Smee was over excited for your return. He handed Alice off to you with an exhausted sigh. It made you giggle. He wasn't the best with children and she was a handful. You sat on your bed cradling her in your arms. Her small eyes looked widely up at you. You began to coo and talk softly toward her stroking her head. You gave a silent look to Smee asking him to leave. He bowed his head and disappeared from the room closing the door behind him.
"We'll be alright Alice," you murmured.
...
The oncoming curse had sent panic through the village. Everyone trusted that Raia's charms would work, but they were still on edge. You stood at the window with Alice in your arms. You could see the clouds of the curse approaching swiftly over the sea. You couldn't help but fear for Killian. What if he got caught in the curse? You'd never see him again. You tried to swallow the fear remembering what Raia had told you. You'd see him again. What if you were both sent away? You shook your head and turned your back to the window. "(F/N)? Lane has called everyone into the tavern," Smee called, appearing in the doorway. You followed him downstairs into the tavern. All of the other employees were huddled at one large table. You joined them sitting comfortably with Alice. Smee sat next to you.
"We'll all be alright. Everything will be fine," Lane assured. The women chattered anxiously amongst themselves. You looked toward the windows of the tavern seeing the large cloud looming over the city. The room began to tremble. Everyone huddled together small cries rising from some of the women. You clutched onto Alice holding her against your chest. You lowered your head to her and tried to sooth her. Everyone yelped as the cloud seemed to go through the room rattling it. The windows shattered spraying the floor with small shards of glass. You covered Alice keeping her as safe as you possibly could. You were truly terrified. The moment seemed to last forever until the curse vanished. Slowly everyone began to stir standing and looking around.
"We should go check on the village," one of the ladies whined. You agreed with her your body trembling slightly. Your group carefully made their way out of the tavern. The windows in each building had been shattered as well leaving glass everywhere. More people sprung from their homes greeting and hugging each other. They were glad to be together.
"Help! Someone help!" the young boy raced through the crowd.
"Slow down boy! What's wrong?" Lane huffed, grabbing hold of the boy to stop his running.
"My- my grandma! She's gone! The curse took her!" He cried, tears streaming down his cheeks. Your heart tightened with sadness. Gasps spread among the crowd.
"She didn't have a charm for herself.. And it took her." He buried his face against Lane's stomach. His body was wracked his sobs. You looked around seeing that the village was mourning the loss. You joined them in mourning rocking Alice gently back and forth in a desperate attempt to sooth her sudden burst of tears. Smee rested a hand on your shoulder squeezing it reassuringly. Raia had become a good friend and now that she was gone your hope was fading. She'd been the one keeping your spirits up for Killian's return, but now that she was gone you began to doubt. You swallowed and pushed the damaging thoughts behind you.
"We should do something to honor her," you blurted, drawing the town's attention to you. Calls of agreement rang out.
"We should make her a statue!" One boomed. More agreement rang out. So it began; the town went to work in an instant. You understood that this was their way of remembering and grieving and you didn't judge. You sighed and returned to the tavern trudging to your room. You placed Alice down in the safety of her wooden cradle. Her cries ceased once you sat on the edge of your bed. You looked out of the broken window your gaze catching on the sea.
"Return to me Killian..."
...
Four long weeks since curse had past. You found yourself in your room with one of the young women from the tavern. She had been helping you care for Alice after the curse. The pair of you exchanged stories laughing and chatting comfortably. You jumped as your door was flung open. Smee leaned against the doorframe gasping for breath. "Smee? What's wrong?" You asked, standing from your place on the bed. He held up his finger signalling that he needed to catch his breath. You waited patiently.
"Ship.. Coming into the docks.. Captain-" Your eyes widened. You didn't let Smee finished as you pushed past him and ran down the stairs. You bolted from the tavern and to the docks as fast as your legs would carry you. The Jolly Roger came into view and you could see Killian's men unloading. You spotted the back of his raven black hair standing on the helm. You kept running ignoring the greetings from the crew. You practically flew onto the deck.
"Killian!" His attention was on you in seconds. He came down the stairs and met you halfway. With a joyful laugh he wrapped his arms around your waist and spun you around gracefully. Your arms flew around his neck for balance as he finally set you down. You greedily pressed a kiss to his lips having missed the taste of him. He grunted into the kiss surprised by the force of it. You could tell he was smiling. You parted for a moment. He tried to speak, but you cut him off with another kiss drawing a stuttered laugh from his chest. He pulled his head back keeping the rest of your body tucked perfectly against his own.
"Easy love, you might suffocate me," he purred, resting his forehead against yours.
"I missed you," you whined, happy tears daring to seep out.
"I missed you too. I'm glad you're okay love. We heard about the curse and I was so frightened that you had been taken by it," he admitted, his hand gently coming to stroke your cheek. You brought your hand up and laced your fingers with his trapping his hand against your cheek.
"I thought the same," you murmured, your gaze not leaving his. Anxiety suddenly rushed through you. You'd somehow completely forgotten about Alice.
"Killian, there is something I need to tell you," you began.
"Captain!" Smee's voice interrupted. Killian slowly slipped away from you and to his first mate.
"Ah! Smee! I assume you kept her out of trouble while I was away," he boomed, hitting Smee on the shoulder.
"Well I uh- I tried my best sir," Smee stammered, rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly. Great job Smee. A frown formed across Killian's face.
"What do you mean?" You could see the concern. Smee's eyes turned to you. You gave him a stern look.
"I- uh- um... I'll go help unload the ship! (F/N) uh- Angel is watching over... Alice." Without another word Smee hurried off.
"Alice? Who is Alice? Love what's going on?" Killian returned to you. You gently reached out and grabbed his hook.
"It would be best to show you." You bowed your head and tugged him along with you. Killian followed staying a step behind you the whole time. He was basically breathing down your neck which made you nervous. You walked up the stairs and released Killian.
"Wait," you told him before going into the room. Angel stood from the bed and handed Alice to you.
"Thank you Angel, you may go," you dismissed. She bowed her head before hurrying out. Once she left Killian slowly entered. He froze in place his eyes widening at the sight in front of him.
"Killian, meet Alice," you cooed, gracefully coming to stand in front of him. He furrowed his brow. You could make out the conflict in his eyes which told you everything you needed to know. He didn't realize it was his. You giggled drawing his attention from the baby back to you.
"Why are you-"
"She's yours Killian," you whispered. His eyes widened a little more in disbelief.
"W- What?" He gasped.
"She's yours," you beamed, gently handing her to Killian. He took her in his arms holding her in a way that his hook wasn't a danger to her. The quick and soft smile that crossed his dashing face caused your heart to melt.
"How long?" He asked, looking up at you.
"I knew a week before you left," you answered, quietly.
"Why didn't you tell me?"You could see a hint of hurt in his expression.
"I-" you paused letting out a sigh.
"I didn't want to put you through that... If she.." You choked on your sentence.
"Oh love." He leaned forward and captured your lips once more. There was no force behind the kiss this time. It was sweet and endearing. You wrapped your arms around his waist bringing your body close to his arms and Alice.
"I love you (F/N)," he murmured, his eyes on Alice.
"And I love you Killian."
...
Once the boat had been stocked with supplies it was time to take off. The village came to see you off each one offering you a hug or a gift for your travels. "We will miss you (F/N). Please do not be a stranger!" They suggested. You held back your tears as you thanked them for their hospitality and acceptance. You were apart of their family and you intended to come back. You looked up at Killian who held Alice in his arms. You couldn't help but giggle at the rounded object pressed onto the tip of his hook. Baby proof!
"Be safe (F/N)," Lane sighed, hugging you tightly.
"We will be. Thank you Lane." You boarded the boat stealing Alice away from Killian. You followed Killian to the helm of the ship standing at his right side with Alice in your arms. You'd missed the sea and now you would go as a family.

The 100 Highlights - “Acceptable Losses” (5x07)
Hey guys!
I’m back to do my highlight recap of episode 5x07, “Acceptable Losses”, written by Jeff Vlaming. I am really happy to say that I enjoyed this episode a significant amount more than I did the previous one, and I’m really excited to dig into it with this post.
If you would like to view my other highlight posts you can do so here.
“She was shot, Marcus. Octavia Blake killed her - not me.”
^ Okay so I want to start of this post by talking about this line from Abby because I honestly think its really important. The fact that Kane was sort of implying that Abby was responsible for that girls death was really rubbing me the wrong way because, like, yes: maybe, if Abby was well, she would have been able to save the girl. But you can’t get a drug addict to fix themselves just by asking them to. And you can’t expect them to be able to fix other people too. As much as Abby may want to stop, that’s not how it works. I don’t think anyone should be blaming Abby for the death of that girl. It shouldn’t have even been Abby’s responsibility to treat her, to be honest. Jackson is a doctor, too. And he’s in a way better condition to handle that kind of situation at the moment. Obviously they wanted Abby because they can use drugs to get her to do what they want, but it doesn’t seem right for Kane to put that guilt on Abby’s shoulders.
It just reminded me so much of Abby saying to Raven in 4x03 that the radiation wasn’t killing that child - she was. It’s not true. Raven didn’t kill that girl, and Abby didn’t kill this one. It was Octavia.
Also I know everyone’s having fun hating on Kabby this season but I must have missed the memo cause I don’t really know why y’all hate it so much
Anywayyyyy
Harper SPOKE
“Funny, that’s the same thing we said about getting back down to the ground. And then we found you.”
LISTEN. I don’t know why y’all were hating on Bellamy for “shooting Octavia down” in this scene. The way she was talking to him in this scene absolutely SCREAMED manipulation to me. I was so happy when he said this to her - like, we’ve been waiting for seasons for him to stand up to Octavia, and finally he is. It’s a lot better than him just sitting there in silence, taking whatever she was probably about to throw at him once she had his sympathy and compliance.
Also, WHAT A DRAG. This writer has all the one-liners, damn. There was so much sass in this episode - I really enjoyed that aspect of it.
Okay, I REALLY love that they brought back Jasper’s suicide letter again in this episode. It was just SO important. So easily they forget about characters who have died on this show and what they meant to the people who are still alive, and I’m happy that that doesn’t seem to be the case with Jasper and Monty. Jasper’s presence in this episode felt like the callback this season needed - it helped me feel a lot more connected to the show, and to the characters. It was a well-needed reminder of the heart of this show and what it’s about.
Also, it is absolutely necessary to give ALL the kudos to Tree Adams for the work he has done this season (and especially in this episode). It’s crazy how much that man has managed to emote with his music. His presence on the crew of this show has served to elevate it in every single way. When I heard “The Awakening” being played over the scenes revolving Jasper ... it was A Lot fam. I think it is the most tragic and beautiful song that they have done on The 100 and it is also very deeply linked to Jasper as a character and everything that he went through. I love that, even though that song is from Season 3, they have continued to bring it back for both Season 4 and 5. It shows that they remember where they came from, and the journey that has brought us to this moment.
It Just Means A Lot.
Actually, everything to do with Monty and Clarke in this episode was INCREDIBLE. Man, I really felt their dynamic. They connected so well and it just made me really emotional. They used to be such a team ... Before. It’s nice to see that they can click back into that place so quickly again. Them teaming up ... it almost felt like old times.
“Monty, you can’t pick a lock with pruning sheers.” “Ye hath little faith.”
Thanks to this post here I am now aware that this is exactly what Monty said to Jasper in 2x07 when they were trying to unlock another door and Now I’m Sad (and yet also really happy that they put so much care and detail into this episode?).
Monty was just amazing this episode - like damn he’s so smart. He’s such an undercover badass. We don’t appreciate him enough.
I have to hand it to the writers with this one cause I really did NOT see that worm thing coming lmao. I was SO sure that we were about to get a cannibalism reveal and I’m pretty sure the writers are well-aware of that. They were having fun with us.
But on another note, I’m actually really happy that they brought the worms into the story. Otherwise, 5x05 would have pretty much just been a filler episode with no real significance. But, in doing this, they’ve made it so that episode is even more relevant than we thought. AND WOW WHAT A FUCKING TERRIFYING WAY TO DO SO.
BELLAMY AND MONTY AND CLARKE HAVING A CHAT JUST LIKE OLD TIMES WOW I’M EMO
We can’t forget they were the OG murder trio of 2x16 i love three pals bonded through the blood of their enemies
“Be diplomatic.” “Get out.” “Real diplomatic.” I LOVE TWO (2) COMEDIANS WOW BELLARKE REALLY HAS ME SHOVED STRAIGHT UP THEIR ASS HUH
“Clarke, he was there when Pike shot her and killed 300 of her people.” I know everyone is really mad about this line but on rewatch I noticed that they changed this line from the script so that it puts the blame for the massacre on Pike’s shoulders rather than Bellamy’s and while I do think it was a bit of an awkward placement, I appreciate that they changed the line so it didn’t feel like such a punch in the face.
Also, Clarke’s pause and then “I’ll go with him”? Peak comedy. I love a woman.
“When I was a kid, after the battle of San Francisco, I watched the evacuation on TV. Thousands of refugees being packed into aircraft carriers. I remember seeing soldiers pushing helicopters overboard just to make more room, and Diyoza was there. She was the one giving the orders. The machines were expendable, but the people weren’t. But up in space, when we reported that the miners were getting sick, Eligius saw it differently. Order Eleven came down: ‘Bring home the Hythylodium, leave the prisoners.’ Like they were garbage. Captain Stevens agreed and I didn’t.”
There’s something so compelling about the way Jordan Bolger delivers his lines. It reminds me of him talking to Clarke in 5x03 - I could listen to him talk about his backstory for hours. When he speaks he just has a way of captivating the audience. And also CHARMAINE DIYOZA WAS A MFING WAR HERO AND I WON’T HEAR ANYTHING ELSE. Damn, she continues to be the absolute best.
“So you see, Diyoza’s not as bad as you think and I’m not as good as you hoped.” WHAT A FUCKING LINE.
I am living for Zeke’s character and his relationship with Raven is so intriguing. Jordan and Lindsey have such great chemistry.
“An honest spy is either incompetent or working an angle. Which are you?” CHARMAINE TRULY CAME FOR HER LIFE GOD SHE’S SO SAVAGE I LOVE A WOMAN
“Karina died because her doctor was too high to operate.” “Really? And here I thought it was the bullet.” THANK. YOU.
The way Charmaine calls Kane out in this scene really just made me want to like, pump a fist or something, lmao. When he’s like “maybe it would be a good way to get rid of some of these ...” and she says, “What, Kane? Undesirables?” I. FELT. THAT.
“Kind of like sending 100 juvenile delinquents to die on the ground. Or abandoning 300 prisoners on an asteroid?” You know, I really didn’t expect Charmaine - of all people - to bring back this old argument from Season 1 but I WAS SO HAPPY THAT SHE DID. Say what you will about Diyoza but she’s nothing if not loyal. She’s not here to abandon her troops and she’s not willing to discard any of them - just like she wasn’t willing to abandon any of those refugees. The fact that she’s so open to allowing defectors into the camp at all, that she is feeding them, giving them shelter, actually sitting down to have chats with them is just so ... uncharacteristic of a “villain”? And I love it.
“Trust her? She’s a drug addict. ... Too soon?”
Literally me, every time Diyoza opens her mouth:
Got to take a short second to say again how interested I am to see how this whole Gaia/Madi plotline is going to play out, now that we know that she is actually here to keep her safe. It’s such an interesting dynamic, with her being so close to Octavia.
I know a lot of people are annoyed that the flame is still part of the show but honestly, I think it makes a lot of sense (considering Madi’s position as a nightblood) and plays a lot more interesting of a role now that the time of the Commander’s is supposedly over and their faith has been destroyed ... almost. In any case, I’m pretty sure that the flame will be gone for good by the end of this season because I think that whatever happens with Madi and Octavia’s reign and Wonkru is going to lead to its destruction, but in the meantime I really don’t mind it being part of the story.
I have to talk about the scene where Gaia shows her the flame because I LOVE how it was filmed. The music was so eery and fit the mood perfectly, and the fucking whispers??? We’ve never actually seen how a real, living nightblood reacts to the flame and I think it’s actually super cool that Madi can feel a bond to it - it was literally beckoning to her. It was giving me major Lord of the Rings vibes.
And wow, Lola really killed that scene. You can clearly see the way her emotions are creating inner turmoil for her. She’s been hiding from the flame since birth and yet she also cannot deny the draw that she feels towards it (again, like Frodo with the ring). Lola has such a potential as a little actress - I’m really excited to see where she goes.
Side note but ... who’s going to tell these writers no one actually refers to their sibling as “big brother” just casually?
“There are times in war where you have to do the wrong things for the right reasons.” And I’m sure this is exactly how Echo justified every single thing she did pre-Praimfaya too. I have to admit that I actually liked what they did with Echo this episode just because it shows that she still has areas that require growth. Her priorities and loyalties changed up on the Ark but she has yet to be truly tested. This is her test, to see how much those six years really changed her. If this episode is an indication, her instinct is still to fall back into old habits during times of war. I’m optimistic that what this means is we are going to get to see Echo have real development, on-screen, this season.
Monty reading Jasper’s letter ... I Am Not Okay.
Again, loved all the callbacks to Jasper in this episode. It’s really interesting that his character arc has carried over from Season 3/4 and seems to have reinvented itself in Monty now. I’m hopeful that Monty isn’t going to go down the self-destructive path that Jasper went down, but that he might actually use Jasper’s memory to pave the path towards real change. We rarely get characters who want to end the fighting rather than continue it - I’m interested to see where Monty’s character arc goes as the season progresses.
“Jasper was smarter than all of us [...] If the war is the only way to have the last survivable land on Earth, then maybe we don’t deserve it.” He’s not wrong ...
Octavia throwing a skull at her mirror in rage ... I just have to laugh
“If we lose, [you helping Kane escape] will be why. How does that make you feel?” “Awful, and I’d do it again.”
LISTEN INDRA THIS SEASON IS EVERYTHING. She’s one of the few characters who is not afraid to call out Octavia on the way that she is leading. She can see so clearly through Blodreina’s bullshit and yet she loves Octavia despite it. That’s Strength.
“I miss him, too.” Lemme just go roll into my corner and CRY MY FUCKING EYES OUT because Bellamy and Jasper was one of my all time favourite dynamics and I miss it so much
“Make algae, not war. That’s cute.” IT IS FUCKING CUTE BELLAMY ALL RIGHT
“If the early batches don’t kill them like they nearly did us.” “That’s before I got the recipe right, and you know it.” I STAN
Seriously, though ... Monty is just SO (so) underrated.
BELLAMY BLAKE HAS A FUCKING DIMPLE ON HIS RIGHT CHEEK AND I WAS NOT EVEN FUCKING AWARE OF THIS FACT BECAUSE IN ALL THE FOUR AND HALF SEASONS THAT CAME BEFORE THIS THE CAMERA HAS NEVER FOCUSED ON HIS SMILE LIKE THAT BEFORE SO YEAH I AM SALTY BECAUSE WE HAVE BEEN ROBBED OF THIS CUTENESS GOOD NIGHT
“75% of your people are dying.” “Well, that’s good . . . For Octavia.” The casual way she delivers this line askqiakdksansks i stan a comedian
LISTEN. The reveal of Diyoza being pregnant LITERALLY made me gasp. Out loud. I literally jumped off of my couch and cheered. I am SO excited about this reveal. I didn’t think they were going to actually use the fact that that Ivana was pregnant during filming in the show because they had her taking tequila shots in 5x05 (*sigh*) but I’m really happy that they decided to. It just adds a whole extra layer to Charmaine. She’s not just a leader - she’s a mother. And I do wonder at how that might affect Abby’s and Charmaine’s dynamic, because that’s one thing they both have in common.
Another reason I really liked that reveal was because I think Charmaine being pregnant gives her a higher chance of surviving this season. She still may die, but it’s a lot darker to kill off a character when they are carrying a baby inside of them than when they are not, and I know the CW has regulations on that kind of thing.
That being said, Karina was heavily implied to have been pregnant and she still died ... Although they did cut out the lines that explicitly stated she was pregnant from the script so maybe her death was why?
Anyway, I’m really excited about this plotline.
Raven looking at a beaten up Shaw with tears in her eyes ... this is the angst I live for. Man, I could get invested in this relationship. Not to mention, Zeke becoming one of the prisoners is SUPER intriguing. His role within Eligius is what kept him conflicted before, but if Eligius has rejected him too now, who will he become? What will he do to help Raven and the others? Right now, I’m sure he wants nothing to do with her but I know that won’t last forever and I’m really excited to see what they do with his character.
I know that Madi beating Ethan in that fight was a TERRIBLE idea but I’m really excited about it. Madi has surprised me as a character (in a good way) because she has so much of her own agency outside of Clarke. I think the story of her struggling with her hero-worship and glorification of Octavia versus her love and loyalty to Clarke is super interesting. She may be fucking everything up but she’s doing it on her own terms, and that’s exciting, because Madi easily could have been written in as a plot device to cause conflict between Clarke and her friends as well as within the Grounder system. Instead, the writers have given her flaws and strengths in her own right. She is way more fleshed out as a character than I was expecting going into Season 5 and I think this story with her and Octavia will be really interesting.
Also, I 100% predicted that Madi would be Octavia’s second in my spec masterpost months ago. In fact, a lot of my spec about Madi and Octavia has been taking shape pretty nicely so I’m really interested to see if the rest of my spec regarding that relationship follows through too ...
Clarke taking the radio and calling Diyoza just like she called Emerson in 2x16 ... damn. DAMN. Nice to see the return of “you may be the Chancellor, but I’m in charge”. She’s So Powerful.
BELLAMY AND CLARKE STARING DIRECTLY INTO EACH OTHER’S EYES DURING THE ENTIRE RADIO SCENE UNTIL BELLAMY COULDN’T TAKE IT ANYMORE AND TURNED AWAY AM I SENSING SOME TENSION HERE
But seriously, he knew exactly what she was going to see even before she said “That’s why we’re going to take her out.” Even after six years Bellamy can read her so well
I’ve been waiting all season for the turbulence I was promised and OH BOY AM I READY FOR THE ANGST
HAKELDAMA 2.0 HERE I COME
BOOM. Out.
That was a KILLER episode. It took me forever to get through this recap because there were so many aspects of the episode that I really, really enjoyed. It hit all the right emotional beats, the music was on point, and the plot was super intriguing. It really feels like the story is picking up and I am SO excited to watch 5x08.
It’s going to be harder for me to keep on top of these recaps for the rest of the season as I’m going to be very busy (and I’m not even sure if I’ll be able to watch most of the episodes live) but I’ll do my best to get them all done. I can’t promise that they will all be completed in a timely fashion (before the next episode airs), as I have been doing them thus far, but I’ll try to get them done when I can!
Thanks for reading!

TDB Rewatch: The New Rachel
Hmmmm.... Hm. Hm. Hm. I have lots of thoughts, but I’m not entirely sure where to start. Now that we’ve entered season 4 -- the show feels different. The show feels different at the beginning of every year, but this one may be the most awkward? I mean, it really feels like they’re trying to do two shows -- and I know I’ve talked about it before, the smushing together of Glee the College Years with Glee the New Class, but the unfortunate thing is that neither one is very developed, which hurts both parts.
I wonder if too many people are missing -- I mean, do I miss Puck, Quinn, or Mike? No, not really. I do think Mercedes, Santana, and Finn’s presence is really missing though. And while I think it was intentional to have the tone be about something missing -- I think maybe the change is too abrupt to feel satisfying.
It’s also weird that despite missing half the cast, it feels like there’s a lot shoved in here, something that’s going to be a part of the show until we get to the back part of season 5. Nothing gets to breathe as it should - also a hindrance.
At the same time, I can already tell it’s not season 3 anymore. There’s a bit more maturity in it -- it’s not all fluff and happy times, and while there is a heaviness looming over it (that’ll break around the break up), the style of storytelling feels more enjoyable. I’m not sure if I can make sense of it, but yes, I’m glad to be past the aggravating tone of season 3.
Thoughts:
Let’s start with Rachel -- if this had been a show where it’s only about Rachel, I’d be okay with it. I don’t think her supporting characters are very interesting, but Rachel is finally, finally struggling with things, and that’s a good place to start a character, especially after all the nonsense of season 3. I will take more issue with it as the show goes on -- does Rachel arc really go anywhere? I’d argue not really outside of her personal relationships, and the non-tension of getting Fanny, but those are thoughts for later in the season. For now, I think it’s a concept that works, and as usual, if only Glee had built on the potential.
However -- I don’t like Cassie July. She’s another mean character being mean cause she can be mean. We already have had Terri, Sue, Quinn, Santana, and now Kitty. What the hell Ryan Murphy, really? I guess it also frustrates me because you can show the realities of how tough the business is without having a washed-up angry wanna-be be mean to the main character. I also hate that once again a failed performer is a teacher. Stop it, show. Stop.
Annnnnd then there’s Brody. Man, remember when we were happy because at least it was not Finn and no more Finchel? This does not hold up well at all. I’ll admit - Brody’s introduction was pretty funny. Then he started talking. And it’s like - Rachel, ew, no don’t.... for the next seventeen episodes. But more so than the questionable “advice” Brody’s gonna give Rachel over this arc - I just think he’s boring and has the personality of a block of wood. Sorry dude.
Also, NYADA is a scam school -- there’s no way that that chick singing Ava Maria would’ve been cut, she was fine, just needed work. I get tired of this show presenting actually talented people as bad. Meanwhile, you would not be singing Billy Joel in the same set as classical music. It... just doesn’t happen like that? Yeah - get ready for a year of me nitpicking how music school does and doesn’t work. I have to use my master’s degree for something.
Meanwhile - back at McKinley, which is marginally more entertaining than the New York stuff at this point...
Will is really the instigator for all the bad behavior over the years. Seriously. He really has no idea what’s going on with his kids. Fosters this idea that there is a /star/ of the show. (Even if he lamely tries to shut the ‘New Rachel’ stuff down). Stops Jake from finishing his song -- which is really kinda rude. And when he has a ton of interest in the club - doesn’t fill it with members. Do you guys realize how big show choirs normally are? A good group might have 20-60 people. I realize - hey TV and can’t focus on everyone. But let’s stop with 12 is the most limit. That’s a chamber group. C’mon.
Meanwhile, Matthew Morrison looks like he can’t wait to get out of there. Poor guy.
The B-Cast (Sam, Artie, Tina, and Brittany) were b-cast for a reason. (Oops) I mean they’ll sorta come into their own, but it’s awkward right now. Also - the show can’t seem to get past it’s season 1 premise, even if the show has evolved. Everyone seems to be totally out of character this episode as they try to be a part of the cool kids because Nationals. It doesn’t work with this group -- even with Brittany, where it’s obvious she’s not trying to be mean, but saying things that make sense to her. I’m glad this whole idea was dropped after the first episode.
Kitty’s irritating - they didn’t need a literal retread of Quinn/Santana. While I don’t think Jake is Puck - Jacob Artist’s acting is a little cringy in this episode. And - I don’t have an issue with Marley, but I’m not a fan of her mom giving pushing her issues onto her. Unique is the most interesting out of the new cast -- and I do like that there is interaction between the old crew and the new kids, but after this it sorta becomes separate - which is another issue.
And, as we’ve all said before, the biggest issue with the newbies is that they felt like they were created to fill the exact holes emptied by the previous graduates instead of letting them be their own characters (like they do in season 6). It’s going to take a while for them to come into their own - and by then, it’s a little too late, tbh.
Blaine is a little goober, a sweetpea, and a cinnemon roll. He does deserve the New Rachel title - and it’s sad that Will will never recognize him for the welcoming leader that he is. Oy.
Kurt’s story, my god, I realize I’m biased here, I get it - but it’s the most interesting arc in the episode. They could have done so much here -- going through leaving your home and going off to the big city to make it without the safety net you were planning on having -- including making the decision to leave your family and significant other behind. It’s the story Rachel should have had - maybe I’m glad she didn’t. Hm. If only Kurt’s season 4 story had been more developed...
The music of this episode was really good. I unironically love Call Me Maybe. And It’s Time is amazing. I am also not someone who thinks that Lea Michele is miles beyond Melissa Benoist - they just have different styles, and Marley lacks a slight edge, but it mostly works.
