*sorry I think my ask cut off the first bit here so I'm sending it again (Haladriel reminds me of Darklina, in the sense that both characters are so loved by me individually and the dynamic is fascinating, but as an actual ship in fandom? I have to navigate through the misogynist takes that are reducing the female character to a trophy)

I saw this in the haladriel tag on x and I think I pinned down the reason why there are certain people who can't handle dark ships and won't stop invalidating them by screaming about abuse/misogyny. It's because in their minds, they take things very concretely, not being able to 'read between the lines', and thus it's hard for them to really think in abstract ways. They just can't divorce fictional characters from actual problems in society. Don't get me wrong, there is a parallel between them that exists as a fine line, and we should absolutely call some things out. But in the realm of fictional characters, shipping, and make believe? That's strictly a 'them/individual' problem, not an 'us' problem. There are SO many haladriel shippers. We get so many fanart by talented people, many of whom haven't even heard of Tolkien. Are they supporting misogyny or have they had to 'navigate thru misogynist takes' in order to draw two characters together because they like their dynamic? It's not our fault that these canon police antis can't separate fiction from reality, and see every aggression toward a female character (unless it's by another female character, or it's a m/m relationship) as misogyny, while ignoring actual inequality in societies around us, as well as ignoring the truth that men can also become victims of abuse/violence. It all goes back to the funny hypocrisy of touting a beloved female character with admirable traits like strong, fierce, powerful, but the instant a male character challenges her and shows any kind of aggression at her - because spoiler alert, he's a villain, it's literally how he was written - these canon police antis whine about misogyny instead of just saying they don't see what shippers see in a fictional pairing and leave it at that. Like, it's ok, you don't need a reason to not like a pairing. The funny thing is, for all their fascination on Galadriel and Sauron as individuals, they fail to comprehend Sauron's character beyond what is stated in black and white in front of them (going back to the concrete vs abstract thinking). I'm not even a huge fan of Charlie, and even I can understand the 'seeing Gal as a trophy' bit is just a very simplified jest at the comparison to Morgoth and the Silmarils. If they actually bothered to read more of his interviews, it's very clear he sees her as beyond just that. Oh, she's just another ring to him basically? Ok but then why do I keep hearing cosmic connection spoken by him anytime Galadriel is brought up in interviews? Cosmic connection flew over this person's head like a frisbee.

I hope you don't mind me saying I never liked Darklina 🙈 I don't know if it's because I wasn't a big fan of the show in general, of because of the actor I found too pretty, or the dynamic in general... It just never worked for me.

I'm probably significantly older than most Tumblr users, old enough to remember how Mulder and Scully shippers were shamed and mocked when Internet and forums barely started to be a thing anyway 🤣 If you ever heard of X Files or even better, watched it, you know that there isn't a ship that's more vanilla than this one. And yet shippers were being mocked for seeing romance where there was only "platonic friendship" (joke on them, 9 years later Mulder and Scully were endgame), when we weren't told that "Scully deserved better" because "Mulder was abusive towards her

Shippers were always made fun to and it'll never stop, I'm afraid. I've stopped caring about what anyone has to say about a fictional romance I like tbh. I don't know if you use social media such as Reddit and Twitter, as far as I m concerned avoiding these places help a lot. Haters don't seem aware of Tumblr's existence, and I pray every day that they remain ignorant because I really like it here 💜

I am mutually exclusive but am generally super friendly! I'll give nearly everyone a chance, even if I don’t know the muse or media! Crossovers, even with no plotting beforehand, are really fun.

I require a rules page to read before I follow, and won’t follow until I’ve read the rules. I tend to like promos to bookmark them so I can read the person’s rules later.

I won’t follow people who do not tag any of their posts. even basic “ic” or “ooc” or “musing” tags and such are good! I don’t care how fancy or simple your tags are, I just care that you have them and use them consistently.

MUN POLICIES.

Mun does NOT equal muse. Just because I, the mun, think or know something does not mean that my muses will. I’m an omnipresent narrator, they are characters in-universe. They each will have different thoughts and opinions than I will. It should go without saying that I do not condone everything any of my muses do.

I am a slow writer. I have college and several other things that take up my time, so I can’t be here twenty-four-seven! Also, my muse fluctuates. I may reply to something instantly if I have the muse for it, or I may get to it weeks later. I hoard drafts and asks like a dragon to get to them eventually! BUT feel free to nudge me if you want to remind me, I won’t mind!

Importantly, I match my partner’s energy. If someone frequently engages me to talk about our characters, I’m likely to do the same! Unfortunately, the same applies if we hardly interact or talk at all; I’m good at interacting and communicating first, but I have a limited pool of energy.

Gal's so funny because despite her being a Superman Powerset and Simmilar Level type hero. She exists in a Magical Girl Genre and not a superhero one. So while Dudepow is almost indestructible and could theoretically just solve all her problems with violence, 90% of the time at the end of the day her conflicts can be solved with the power of friendship and kindness. It's just that she's kind of the first Dudepow to figure that shit out and it annoys her to no end. Exceptions to this are like, the legacy villain Mecha Maiden, who has been hunting down and killing Dudepow's for centuries trying to get her hands on the ring. The combination of violence and kindness is so funny and Gal is so tired. Dudepow is not your therapist get some real help. Stop.

Back story

born from kaycees boredom and wanting to create chaos she finds the easily irritable vampire Queen and her colony after observing and planning. In reality she's really just sitting in trees and eating random food only to drop the small remains of it on unsuspecting vampires and watching their reactions to her delight. After a few days of spooking vampires and watching Simon and vanganza try to plan things she decides to drop in once venganza is alone. Venganza being very annoyed that she was startled ("she NEVER startles") Kaycee and her have a long talk about ridding safe haven of its shield that keeps her outside their cities. Kaycee returns over a span of a week slowly planting seeds of ideas into the Queen's head as the Queen does the same to her, kaycee eventually springs up and idea of her creating a spawn with her magic containing a splice of her own powers and vanganzas. After an hour they cone to an agreement and Kaycee lies to her saying she will need time and will return in a year with the offspring... 3 years pass and Kaycee is no where to be seen, venganza has almost forgotten it and after a while she thinks it was a fever dream.

(I headcannon that the vampire sister Francesca, bambi and pepper where adopted with the hopes they would be able to pass into safe haven and that was the original idea for Kaycee and vanganzas offspring that never appeared )

A little over a year after the sister were brought into the colony the youngest pepper spots maple wandering the forest.

After a year of secret friendship that extended to bambi aswell the two adult vampires come across a unrecognized vampire, maple.

They ask her we're her mom is but she doesn't answer any questions directly or how they want (true child way)

They decide one more couldn't hurt since she atleast wasn't scared of violence.

Years pass and she's raised with the sisters and eventually get into safe havens orphanage.

Kaycee who had been loosely watching the whole time pulls some strings and convinces Lauretta to adopt a kid (the whole media appearances thing) the media thinking she hates kids and is horrible person incapable of love which annoys her to her wits end, she is also burdened with constant "useless" secretaries so she begrudgingly agrees that it is a good idea, she can just not adopt a young child easy enough.... Kaycee recommended her own offspring and when Lauretta asks why maple is "soo special" Kaycee wordlessly demonstrates her own brilliant powers, she bows then leaves without another word.

To make sure it's not too long 12yr old maple gets adopted by Lauretta and is taught by a flurry of high end tutors and her mother on how she wants her to act in public. She attends zp and despite her adoptive moms attitude, maple isn't really a leader, she more if a second in command, she eventually meets Baltimore and fall head over heels for the snooty confident avian. Maple hides it thoroughly and Baltimore after a while felt mutual. They do get together in the end.

@bookcaseninja and I had a great chat last night about some of my Justice League headcanons. Because I am passionately in lust with four of the heroes.

So here’s my thoughts.

The Snyder Cut was great. It made the whole Justice League thing make sense, instead of being a weird disjointed mess.

Don’t get me wrong, I will always be a Marvel girl at heart, but deep in my wizened Gen X heart, there is a soft spot for DC. I grew up watching Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman, Christopher Reeve as Superman, and later, loved Michael Keaton as Batman.

So I definitely have feelings about these characters.

And then they (The Powers That Be) cast such beautiful people into the roles. Henry Cavill? Gal Godot? Jason Momoa? Ben Affleck.

Dude. I’d be the Justice League’s team slut. (yeah, yeah, I know we don’t like that term anymore, but it’s the first one I thought of).

So then… I started having these headcanons. About being the team Comfort Girl. Because seriously, those 4 snap, I’m not kicking any of them out of bed.

Here’s my thoughts on being the full-time, paid Comfort Companion of the Justice League.

Bruce, of course, has you on the payroll as something innocuous but important. Human Resources, maybe? Physiotherapist? Trainer? Haha. It takes him a while to determine exactly the position, but you’re paid to be there. And each of the members of the Justice League make liberal use of your services, although in a variety of different ways.

Diana misses the kind of love that happens between women on Themyscira, just organic, soft, romantic love. Sometimes she wants sex. But sometimes, more often, she wants a date night that is pjs and a being tangled on the couch with a bottle of wine and a crappy old rom-com. There’s soft touch, and being held. She plays with your hair, and sometimes you fall asleep in each other’s arms.

Bruce was supposed to be the one it physically hurt to be with. You figured he would be rough and brutal. Instead he is gentle. He whispers romantic nonsense when he comes, and always insists you stay the night. There’s always a hot coffee, exactly how you like it, waiting on the night table when you wake up in the morning.

Clark is the one who is all restrained violence. You can tell he’s trying not to hurt you, but he’s a big rough country boy with super powers. You are always sore for days after an encounter with him. No regrets, but sore hips, and despite how careful he tries to be, there’s always bruising. He’s rough. The raw power of him sexually is an overwhelming turn on, but he’s literally the only reason you work out.

Arthur just wants to party, get drunk and fuck. He never stays the night, he just rolls away, gives your bum a smack, and presses a kiss against the centre of one of your bumcheeks, and is out the door before his jeans are done up.

Barry tries, ONCE, to woo you. And you laugh at him. He’s such a kid, you can’t really take it seriously. It turns out you make an excellent calorie-dense chicken noodle soup, and he will sit in the kitchen to watch you make it. He deliberately slows himself down to eat it, savouring the rich broth. When he’s done, he stands up, kisses your cheek and announces you’re his favourite auntie, before disappearing.

Victor dupes you into playing online games with you, until you clue in that he’s hacking them in order to win. Then he doubles down and starts challenging you to board game tourneys, arguing that the odds are slightly more in your favour. They aren’t, but you spend hours laughing and enjoying each other’s company. You only ever really manage to win if the game is about luck, and not strategy - the man is too smart for his own good. But you enjoy spending time with him.

Alfred senses that you are sometimes ashamed of your role on the team, and wishes you wouldn’t be. You were hired to comfort the team, and you have managed to connect, on a non-sexual level, with all of them. Except for maybe Arthur, but even Arthur seeks you out just for your friendship at times. There’s nothing wrong or shameful about being a Comfort Girl, he thinks. It’s the oldest profession in the world, and having you on the payroll means that both you, and the members of the Justice League are receiving the companionship you need in a safe way. And besides, you make an excellent cup of tea, and are a stimulating conversationalist.

The Firebending Masters

I just couldn't bring myself to start watching this episode. Before i was like "yesss, bring me all the awkwardness" but then i was like "oh fuck oh shit no i'm a dumb dumbass that can't handle awkwardness and embarrassment well". Luckily Zuko trying to interacting with the rest wasn't that bad. But, he really don't know how to interact, huh? Zuko, baby, just... chill a little. Ya know, work on your upbeat attitude. xD

Let's be honest, those eastern dragons look just weird with wings. How their long bodies even keep up? Ok, i guess that since only sky bisons are the only animal airbenders the dragons can't also fly just like that because of reasons. But still.

So, they looked a bit on a pretty, rainbow fire and we're like "ah yes we understand". Good for you boys. I do not get it at all. How do people uderstand things just by looking at them?

They have a one big fire that's burning for thousands of years. So, even at the beginning firebenders we're extra.

I didn't metion it earlier but why badger moles are so frikin big? Moles are really tiny, seriously, they're tinier that you would expect. And badgers are... average, i guess? There's nothing about these animnals that says "put togehter = elephant size".

Zuko is there for a day and a half, trying no more to murder everyone, and Sokka is immediately ready to mess up with him. Bless this boy.

The Boiling Rock, Part 1

Ok, honestly, Boiling Rock is kind of a stupid name. But now i learned that it's a literal boiling rock. A big rock in the middle of a boiling lake. In a volcano of course, because that's just how the fire nation is rolling. That's just funny.

They stole a whole fridge for people and no one noticed. Yeah, let's say it, these guard are not, hmmm... to not to be too rude... not very good at their job.  But i also don't get how this whole chunk of a metal don't get incredibly hot in this lake. Did i miss something? ??? And later no one was able to tell that this very suspiciously behaving teenager that just showed up a few days ago is a mole. Maybe that's just how fire guards works? With tennage interns, or something. Because why not. Or maybe Sokka is just that genius master of disguise.

They separated Hakoda and Bato. ):

I don't know why but Mais uncle design is... Idk what it is, but there's something about him that dosen't seem right. I look at him and... I Just Don't Know. Something Wrong. So... meaty?

Sokka is fully aware that even when he is planning everything out, the results are not necessarily good. Zuko at leat accepted that he's a dumbass that is doing things without thinking, but it looks like he's still not aware that everything end for him more or less good. And they're such dumb champs together. Amazing.

Appa is such a baby they need to throw food into his mouth. Aaaaw.

The Boiling Rock, Part 2

I read analysis about power dynamics between Mai, Ty Lee and Azula, how their friendship works and how it not works, but this betrayal still looks much like it get out of nowhere.

The Southern Raiders

OOOoooh! So, yeah, Aang, if violence is never the answer what you're going to do when you finally meet firelord Ozai, eh? Ok, i know what's he gonna do, but it's weird that untill now he didn't thought about it at all. I guess that before the sun eclipse he didn't worried about how to defeat Ozai because he was supposed to be powerless, but now? Yeah Aang, yeah, whatcha gonna do when you come for him?

Why Sokka and Suki are so secretive about their relationship? Like, probably everyone knows about them. I bet it was Sokka idea and Suki just rolled with it just to humour him. And because it's cute and funny.

So Appa is so traumatized by tunnels that he would faced an air ships shooting bombs and fire at him in such intensity it looks like they shoot lasers.

Ok, Katara putting together her anger at Zuko and hatred towards all fire nation because of her mother being murdered makes sense. She was suppressing all her negative emotions for so long, no wonder that she even burst out at Sokka like that. As awful as it was, it’s understandable. Althought it would be nice to see her apologizing to him instead of talking with Aang about how she still do not forgave that man for what he done. I guess that people are having issues with Katara being angry at Zuko and overall angry is because we do not saw too much interactions between them. He just joins in, goes on two adventures and boom, i want my mother back! Not enough episodes with Zuko just dickin around with gaang and having bigger and lesser arguments.

But i also like how they showed that despite being full of hatred and anger Katara still wasn't able to kill. To commit murder herself. It's not that easy to kill someone, just like forgiveness is not easy. You can’t just say that you forgive or try to convince yourself into feeling like that. But you can somehow start to move on without it. But tbh Katara all this time was thinking about this man as a monster and that what she was exptecting to meet. And she found... well, we all know how he turned out to be. How do you gonna kill someone so pathetic?

I took your mothers life so you can take my mother, that's the only fair way, and i'm just like lololol xD

So, Sokka want to borrow Momo for a few days, who know for what, he most obviously do not. He just plans to get Momo and then maybe some adventure finds them on it's own.

Sooo, they we're just sleeping there like nothing happened and apparently we're surprised when attack happened. lmao seriously? No one got even half of a thaught that this big ass ship was followed? Hm it would be nice if someone else heard Azula celebrating becoming the only child. Sokka would made a good joke about how fucked up of a siblings they are.

The Ember Island Players

Actress playing Aang was so adorable and cute and precious.

Toph get a big, muscle guy that is defeating 10 people at once while making sarcastic ripostes. That's accurate in, like, 99,9%.

Sokka, a fan of comedy, was so happy and proud when actor playing him used Sokkas jokes and audience loved it. I think that our boy can start writing plays. He could be this world Shakespeare with his sense of humor.

Yes, Jet just died and they couldn't care less. Also he got a flower instead of that wheat. Nice.

Using ribbons to show firebending is a pretty good idea.

The fire nation is not immune to fire nation propaganda plays.

But how they find out about all these events? Like, what happened under Ba Sing Se in crystal caves? Who was their informant? ...Azula herself?

What's going on about Katara and having hope?

The cringe, oh the cringe that gaang was experiencing, it's just beautiful. xD

But seriously, how long is that play?

Aang, you're just 12. Stop thinking about being romantically with someone. Seriously. And do not kiss anyone on a lips without consent. Boy, you need a proper education about boundaries. And take example from Katara - it's a war, there's no time for things like that. Tbh i have nothing against kataang, but it's not handled very well through whole show. There was more scenes with some romantic tension that we're amiss than good. :/

Also, it feels like there's at least one episode missing when at the beginning they're suddenly in Zukos family old house on the ember island. I do noy necessarily need to see every step of their journey, like talking about where to go, and then to go there and getting cozy and all that. But the difference between ending of previosu episode and beginning of this is kind of too much. Especially when it ended on such strong emotional moment for Aang.

You make me feel so much and I feel like I am always trying to figure out your humor and how your brain works and it does not help that it seems to be supported by your whole friend group, creating this impenetrable cloud of references and jokes and meanings and levels of irony around you that i will never fully Get, not because I’m too earnest but because our snark is often aimed in opposite directions. Why is the only thing that has made me feel better about this that “cringe and cancel culture” joke I reblogged last night. Seeing you hate on astrology and polyamory in a “kids these days” way is making me want to rip my fucking hair out

On that note why is everyone else’s aggression seen as Powerful And Necessary and mine is seen as like, a wild animal who needs to be controlled. Yesterday my boss told me “don’t get upset!” after I responded in an annoyed tone to her saying “no, no, no, no, NO! why would you do THAT” in response to me explaining how I was going to put in a kids’ schedule (after wee talked it out I was right lol) when like a) girl that ship has SAILED and b) you! are! the! one! getting! upset!

The online version of the above is that when you participate in cringe culture or what the fuck ever that is just you being a hilarious lovable grouchy old man but when I do it it’s because I’m a toxic evil monster 

I am lonely. I feel like I agree with a lot of things people in my circles sort of scoff at and am sort of scoffing at a lot of things people in my cirlces agree with and I would just like to have a strong sense of mutual understanding with people, I want someone to make eye contact with and nod, I want someone to be in the audience when I stare at the camera. I have this with some people about certain specific issues but then we’ll disagree on something and I’ll conclude that Specific Issue was actually superficial and REAL connection is about [thing i perceive to be Deeper] but its actually all just a bunch of bullshit and I am a lonely idiot

I am lonely. I want irl friends who I can see and hear and hug and do irl activities with. I have not been out to a party since New Years Eve, which is not quite as bad as I thought now that I’m actually reflecting on it, and the winter is better staying-in time than the rest of the year, but like....when I do want to be out and about, who am I going to do that with. I want gal pals. I want bros and broettes. Please for the love of god someone friendzone me, I need some friends. I am so fucking self conscious about how I socialize, and what is and is not Cool, and how much the definition of Cool changes. It’s all a bunch of bullshit and I am a lonely idiot. My brother and I are good friends I think but he does so much Man Bullshit to me like acts like I’m talking his ear off when I say lke two sentences meanwhile will talk At me and my mom and the room at large pointlessly for literal hours and get mad when any single one of his Jokes or Comments is met without a response. And I know he’s irritated with a ton of things that I do as well. 

Regarding the two above bullets, I will say that my online friendships (which I am including irl friends who no longer live close to me in) have improved a lot recently as I have Gotten Real with myself about a lot of things and allowed myself to set boundaries. I am acting more respectfully to myself and to you guys i think? But I just need irl stuff too.

I have no idea where I want to live. I can’t live in my parents house on long island forever and it’s getting to be to much to just live there on the daily because we’re all getting on each other’s nerves. But I don’t know where else I would want to live. I mostly know what i don’t want: not someplace cold, not someplace too far inland. But the latter point is the sticking point because while Long Island is Very Expensive, so is pretty much anyplace near enough to the ocean, and like, the ocean is my wife. I know that is irrational but she is my wife and we are in love. I want to live someplace non-bougie that is also magically a beach town. So that is all compounding the above issue of IRL Friends because I do not even know where I want IRL to take place.

My body is under scrutiny in my house and I just want to make sure it’s okay. I have been WAY better with moderate aerobic exercise and resistance training (go me!), but I’ve been slacking with stretching (which is even more important now that I’m doing strength training) and I fucking hate intense aerobics with my entire heart. The thing I hate the least right now is the elliptical but god it is still so boring and sucks. Swimming is my favorite cardio but it’s not very accessible to me at this moment and there’s no public pool in my town and I would have to pay to use the one in the neighboring town. I love dancing but I don’t have anyplace to do it (maybe the basement when no one is home) and wouldn’t know where to start with making it into a workout - I really fucking hate following videos. Sorry this is so whiny and self defeating. Food wise I just keep bingeing. My diet is not perfect outside of that but it’s not as bad as it used to be, but the binging. Every single night. It’s literally self harm but it’s the only thing that makes me feel like I’m not being punished because everything else does. 

I want to get along with my dad but similar to my brother on a way more intense scale he just is such a man and it is really grating. Again, I know I am also grating, two negatives don’t make a positive and we just keep pissing each other off. I’m getting better at not showing it. 

I keep having terrible, disturbing dreams: i am violent to others, others are violent to me, there’s always some kind of  work/school stress in the picture so sleeping isn’t even relaxing, I just wake up stressed. Maybe it’s because I keep stuffing my face before sleeping. 

I feel like I am not very good at my job and keep making stupid mistakes, because I cannot focus, because I keep thinking about the above bullets nonstop. I am not a very good leader and managing people is so difficult and I say sorry like 850 times a day and everyone thinks I’m a fucking idiot. Or maybe they think that I’m not only an idiot but an idiot who tries to use Big Words. Which i guess i am. fuck me huh! 

i want a baby really, really badly lmao. But I don’t know enough about myself to really begin dating I feel, like I keep going on “dates” that end up not being dates and actually end up just me making out with some guy, which is fine but I want romance, but don’t know how or where to find it, or what I even want in a partner lol, or where we would live together or what my career would be or anything lmao. I just find everyone annoying, especially myself. 

I can’t stop thinking about stuff from the past and reliving feelings, mostly irritation, like the thing just happened a second ago. These aren’t memories of trauma or violence just of things that were incredibly annoying, usually condescending.

lookism rant #1

so... it’s spring break. and i’ve spent the entire break doing what any smart ap student would do: ignoring my five looming ap tests and draining my phone battery by looking at webtoons and instagram. since most of my favorite webtoons are on hiatus, i have resolved to rereading my favorites, and one that i’ve reread the most so far is lookism. as spring break comes to a finish in two days, i decided to get my life back on track and instead of simply rereading the comic, i will rant about my most and least favorite characters starting with the fandom’s all-time favorite character (yes, if you check the wiki for lookism there is a poll and it is fact that he is the majority’s favorite), jay hong/hong jae yeol. (also, note that these are my opinions so if you disagree with them don’t be offended but i would be happy to hear other people’s opinions on the webtoon! please comment who would be on your list because i need to talk to more people who read lookism!)

top favorite characters~

1. jay hong/hong jae yeol:

let’s just list off reasons why everyone loves him: he is well-dressed (even plans out other people’s outfits), generous (gives daniel literally everything he wants), selfless (he fricking took in enu’s pups even though he is scared of dogs), RICH (main reason for kouji’s admiration), strong (manz uses his systema well), and CAN RIDE A MOTORCYCLE (yes, i love a man who can ride a bike). he may not be the most dynamic character, but his static puppy status makes it impossible for me to put him lower on this list. we honestly don’t know that much about his backstory and i am super curious about why his family relationships are so strained (except with his sister, joy). for now, he remains a mystery, but like an attractive mystery. overall, me -> ( ･_･)♡

2. zach lee/lee jin sung:

honestly hated this boi in the beginning because he was a big bully to daniel, but  he has been through some SERIOUS character development. mira was a big part in this but i feel like overall his morals have changed so much even when mira isn’t around. he does still fight often, but now it’s not meaningless violence as he uses his boxing skills to defend his friends (ex: defending johan during the god dogs arc).

i also hated his eyebrows and hair in the beginning of the comic but like that’s personal preference. however, in the last few episodes, his hair looks SO GOOD (reference image above).

he is second on my list of favorite characters because i feel that his development throughout the story has been the most dynamic. he not only changed mentally as he overlooks lookism more (ex: he is not only friends with big daniel but also little daniel) but also physically as he doesn’t simply depend on his inherent talent for boxing but actually goes back and trains again in order to get better (to defend mira >.<)

in the future, i hope to see more development with his relationship with mira and his friends because i hold a lot of high hopes for this boi! ♥‿♥

3. vasco/lee eun tae/tabasco:

BIG CUTIE ENERGY ♥╣[-_-]╠♥! first off, he may not have as much long-term development over the course of the story like zach, but we do see a lot of his development with his own arc and bullying story. he was always a pure boi and his inherent innocence creates a discrepancy with his appearance which makes him more endearing in my opinion. the idea of lookism is very apparent in his character because most people look at him and see him as a gangster or someone very intimidating, but in reality his personality and mindset are very innocent (showing another way that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover). i honestly LOVED the scene in the god dogs arc in which he defended zach and daniel joins in because that friendship is GOLDEN. i love how he always strives to be stronger and more powerful to defeat the evil in the world because it shows that he truly cares about the weaker people and those impacted by lookism. in my opinion, i think that vasco and zach will end up being the most powerful in the story (but that’s my opinion)

4. mira kim/kim mi jin:

pure! cute! sweet! moral! (✿ ♥‿♥)! mira is just an all-around great gal that makes it impossible for me to find flaws with. although she isn’t super major in terms of daniel’s story, she does impact zach significantly and makes him a better person. like she is the sole reason that zach has become a character that i truly admire and like. (although she did think that daniel was the r-word when he tried hitting on her in the beginning of the story. but throughout the story we see that she isn’t really a person to judge people on looks and stuff as we see that she gives jasmine the benefit of the doubt even after the vasco fiasco)

5. yena/eli jang’s (jang hyun’s) daughter:

honestly too cute for words. like the episodes where zach and mira find her are my favorites so i just wanted to include her in my favorite character list. also, she seems to be a character that really impacts other characters (zach and eli really changed for her ಥ_ಥ)

least favorite characters~

park ji ho:

always doing dumb things and making it harder for the people around him. he tries too hard to be a part of the popular group and as zach said, he doesn’t really think of them as friends because he just thinks about what the benefits are for hanging out with daniel and co. i think we all went from being tolerant of jiho in the beginning and then hating him at the end. i especially hated how he kept blaming other people and yet not accepting when people were being friendly. especially during the fake bank account arc, he just brushed off daniel when he asked jiho if he wanted to go to the convenience store then jiho goes running back to daniel and his friends when he realizes his mistake. overall, -123912830/10.

2. james gong:

don’t even know where to start with this punk. very violent for very little reason! i know i stated before that i hate jiho but i still felt kinda bad for him when he realized that james had sold the bank account he made for him. just overall a very intimidating character that hurt zach (ﾉಥ益ಥ）ﾉ ┻━┻

3. jasmine huh:

needs to get her shit(ake) together. first off, she almost got vasco expelled from the school because of her lies. like big! red! flag! it seems that she really doesn’t care about other people (except james) and is willing to put so many other people at risk to save her own behind. also, i hate how she uses other people. like how she uses mira to make money when mira didn’t do anything wrong ヾ(ﾟдﾟ)ﾉ. i hope she one day realizes that her lies are gonna hurt so many other people and then herself.

4. heemin kim/zeus/creepy dude from the boot camp arc:

sexual assault is a big no in this household. i hate how he thinks that being handsome can defend him of his crimes! also, he broke zach’s arms which made me FLIP OUT. LIKE HOW DO YOU DARE TO HARM MY BOXER BOI. he also attacked mira, an actual angel ლ(ﾟдﾟლ). words can’t describe how much i hate this man but numbers can -> 0/10

5. logan lee/lee tae sung:

big bully energy. he needs to lay his hands off of everyone (especially zoe!). blackmail? big no go in this household. he also dumped his plate of food on mira? BIG NO GO! he needs to get his life together and realize that people don’t hate him because he’s “ugly,” it’s because he has THE WORST PERSONALITY!

6. strong contenders for least favorite: stalker girl, animal cruelty cat mom/hoarder, zoe’s stalker

characters that i need more information about to form stronger opinions about~

vin jin/jin ho bin:

dislike him because he abused enu but also want to know more about him. big bully energy but i feel like he has a deep backstory behind him so i want to know more. why did he quite judo? why does he wear sunglasses? hope he gets over his superiority complex and changes because i feel like he has a lot of potential.

2. eli jang/jang hyun:

so far, very cute and strong is all i have to say about him. also, he is a good dad like that scene where he put out that god dog’s cigarette? MAJOR PROPS TO YOU ELI. i’m very curious about his backstory as well because it seems that he was a contender for gun’s successor but he changed drastically to take care of yena. i also just love a man with good hair sooo…

3. jong gun + joon goo:

i want to know more about these two! like what’s their backstory? why did gun create the 4 big crews? why was goo sent to the juvenile detention center before? (look at vasco’s bullying arc for reference) why did gun leave goo alone with the money collection? overall very mysterious and i want to learn more.

random characters that just deserve appreciation~

crystal choi/choi soo jung:

we stan a strong female character. however, i don’t like how she is immediately prejudiced against handsome men in the beginning of her appearance. i think over time she’ll realize that her prejudice isn’t right and her experience as someone who has to deal with lookism doesn’t justify her immediate judgements. however, we need more female fighters in this story so she is a big yes.

2. duke pyeon:

WE STAN A MAN WHO FOLLOWS HIS DREAMS DESPITE BEING BULLIED AND JUDGED. yes, we stan.

3. daniel park/park hyung suk:

honestly, he’s a great character and all, but i don’t know if he could ever reach favorite character status. i just have a mindset that makes me unable to pick the protagonist as a favorite character because i feel like they are sometimes created specifically to just bring the story together. don’t get me wrong, he’s a great person, defends his friends, and doesn’t fight for no reason, but i feel like there isn’t anything super special about his personality (other than the fact that he has two bodies but like so does crystal). he also looks like kim seokjin in his new body which is a big plus.

5. mary kim/idk her korean name someone help me:

strong female character? i think yes. honestly such a fav. she doesn’t take sh*t from vin jin and i honestly want to know more about her character and background. *spoiler alert* i read ahead in the korean version and saw that she can beat people up too so like… she’s a bada**.

6. kouji:

as a person interested in computer science, I STAN. i also love a man with good hair. his cocky personality is sometimes off-putting but honestly his confidence is endearing at times. also we both love money!

7. jace park/park bum jae:

during vasco’s bullying story, i was so sad when he left vasco, but i love how he realized that he should’ve been a better friend and has stuck with vasco after all of this time. also love how he listens to vasco and tries to make him happy even when he knows that vasco does some silly things (like planting durian seeds in korea)

8. zoe park/park ha neul:

i love her development! she still fights with herself over whether she should like big daniel or small daniel, which displays her internal conflict with lookism. over time she has stopped judging people solely on their appearance and she is even able to distinguish between daniel and his cousin! (in my opinion, if daniel doesn’t end up with jay he better end up with zoe instead)

9. daniel’s (hyung suk’s) mother:

ICON! WE NEED TO APPRECIATE OUR PARENTS MORE! I AM A BIG STAN! SHE WORKS HARD FOR DANIEL AND IT BREAKS MY HEART WHEN DANIEL DOESN’T REALIZE!

10. song johan:

deserved better. he was just trying to help his mom which makes him so pure! but i feel like he should realize that he has friends (zach and mira) that could help him get through his problems! overall, want to see more of him and i hope he develops even more.

Back when I was updating and posting the Furies, DarkSideDuck made mention that their backstories and lives sounded like a teenage drama and I thought that was pretty hilarious. That concept got stuck in my head so I decided to goof around with it and make this. What I imagined was a show that was exactly like one of those high school teen drama shows, but all the characters are these monstrous god-beast things. Everything in the show would remain the same, with all the buildings, vehicles and everyday gadgets staying human-sized and designed for human use, but the people were just monsters for some reason. No explanation would be given and no attempt would be made to try and make things grounded in reality. How does a two headed turtle creature fit through a doorway? No clue, it just happens. How can a massive snail beast riding a raft of bubbles drive a car? Doesn't matter, she just does. The entire show focuses on a group of girls who attend the same school: Ka'Ran High School. These 7 ladies (technically 8, but two of them are fused together) are just your average teenage gals who are just trying to make their way through high school and life. Bad enough that they got to deal with school drama, homework and that darn principal, but they also have to put up with their super controlling and buzz-killing parents! Lame! But as the hits keep coming and life keeps throwing curve balls, this group of gals finds help and care from each other, which is what gets them through this crazy world known as high school. But that is only if their parents don't kill them first when they find out who dented the car! WHOOOOOOOOOOA! Cast: Ter'Mora: High school and classes may be a pain in the butt, but Ter'Mora prefers it much more than being at home dealing with her parents. Her folks are incredibly uptight and overbearing, always keeping tabs on her and refusing to let her have her own life. There are some days it feels like she lives in a prison, as her parents practically keep her locked in the house whenever she is not at school. With drama both at home and school, Ter'Mora just wants to get through each passing day and hopefully find some freedom when she graduates. She mainly keeps to herself and does her best to stay unseen and unheard. This quiet, lackadaisical life, however, gets turned upside-down when her old childhood friend Tsundra suddenly shows up! The crafty runaway shakes quite a few things up for Ter'Mora, as she now gets dragged into crazy situations that her parents most definitely wouldn't approve of! Though Tsundra can cause some headaches and may get her in trouble, Ter'Mora enjoys the time spent with her. Perhaps this old friend may be the key to unlocking those prison doors and at last setting Ter'Mora free.   Tsundra: Though she may be found hanging around the high school, Tsundra doesn't actually belong there. She is less of a student and more of a runaway, as she fled the clutches of her parents and drifted to this little town. Now she just wanders the streets and looks for any way to get by, even if it calls stealing a thing or two. She occasionally will get a job, but sooner or later her attitude and lifestyle causes some trouble! If that happens, she doesn't worry, as her smooth talking and sly thinking always gets her out of a jam. During the day, she often shows up somewhere on the school grounds, blending in with the student body. She does this mainly to avoid unwanted attention, as the town's Svlranix keep a lookout for any kids skipping class and she certainly doesn't want them catching her! The other reason she does this is to hang out and socialize (and con some folk for a free lunch), which is how she found her old friend Ter'Mora. Back when they were kids, Tsundra and her family lived in this very town and the two were inseparable friends. Sadly, Tsundra's folks took her away and moved elsewhere, shattering that beloved friendship. After all these years, Tsundra assumed that everyone in the town forgot her and that Ter'Mora moved on. Upon their first meeting, though, she found this was hardly the case! The two now work to rekindle that special friendship, but unfortunately Ter'Mora's strict parents often get in the way. Tsundra cannot stand the way Ter'Mora lets her folks control her, so she tries to find ways to toughen her friend up and get her to stand up for herself. Trouble and wacky adventures usually ensue with these efforts!

Vortess: The very picture of rebellious teen, Vortess has no love or care for things like rules and curfews. Trouble is her profession, as she is always finding a way to stick it to "the man" and thumb her nose at the "authorities." This hardcore, punk lifestyle can be seen in her all-black wardrobe and by the fact she got piercings without asking her parents' permission! WHOOOOOOA! When at school, she can either be found in the halls skipping class or in the principal's office (mostly the latter), as she refuses to be a part of "the system." Not only is she a pain to every adult in town, but she frequently picks on other students at school, mainly the nerds and any one who follows the rules. Outside of school she can be found in any alleyway or any place where it looks cool when you loiter. Pretty much any graffiti found in town belongs to her and her "gang" (there is like only two people in it), and she has been known to go on the occasional joy ride with somebody else's car. Vortess wants to always be cool and tough, no matter the time and place. Even if she is out of her element or doesn't know what she is doing, she will always try to keep the cool persona up. This often leads to her doing dumb weird things to impress others, or saying things that make absolutely no sense because that is how cool people talk. She is also currently dating Elkaz, but she would never admit that because the "boyfriend girlfriend thing" is something only losers do. They just like to hang out a lot and do the same things together, it is nothing serious or stupid like that SHUT UP!  

Typhin: The main gossip girl of Ka'Ran High, no juicy info ever escapes her ears. She is always on the prowl for the latest info and drama that she can use for her own plots. It also doesn't help that she is the head of the school paper, which is a role she takes WAY too seriously. If she gets her hands on a real juicy piece of gossip, she will be sure to slap it right onto the front page. That is unless an interested and charitable person is willing to "convince" her not to do so. This leads her to be the master of blackmail and also the top person on the "Do Not Let This Jerk Any Where Near You" list for practically any student. This doesn't bother her, as she has some ingenious (and possibly illegal) ways to gather information and find out humiliating secrets. Her insidious and conniving ways makes her despised by most, but very few are foolish enough to take her down. This is because she most likely has info on them that she will leak out to all if confronted, a fact she is quick to point out every time. She also is under the protection of Magalya, head cheerleader and top girl of all Ka'Ran High, and no one wants to cross her. It is rumored that Magalya took Typhin into her clique to ensure the sneaky reporter never said a bad thing about her and so that she could focus her attacks on Magalya's enemies. Magalya: Not only is she the head cheerleader and most popular girl in school, but she is also the most feared. Magalya carries a lot of power when it comes to social standings and the school food chain, and she won't hesitate to use it on those who tick her off. Some may be fooled by her cheery, rah-rah attitude when she is performing, but when off the field she is a rather foul-tempered mean girl. It doesn't take much to irritate her, and she will make her annoyances quite vocal to the offending parties. Those who truly anger her will face extreme punishment. This can lead to her either turning her posse on them, using Typhin to publicly humiliate them or resorting to some good ol' physical violence. As a star athlete, she is quite in shape and deceptively strong, so don't think picking a fight with her is a good idea. Most students work to stay on her good side or at least be so insignificant that she doesn't even acknowledge them. Those who seek to be in her good graces hang around her like flies, showering praise and agreeing with every word. This is a risky maneuver, though, as one misstep can easily result in becoming her next target. Rumor has it that Magalya is dating lead quarterback, Grkhan, but many think that is a rumor made by Grkhan himself, as she only refers to him as "that idiot." Avla: From her enthusiasm and naivety, one should immediately know that Avla is not from around here. She is in fact the new student at school, as her family just moved into town from some far away place. She is eager to learn and way too happy to be at school, which has quickly led to her being labeled a nerdy loser. She has a love for study and books, which makes her a favorite to the teachers and a target to the students. Vortess is one of the folk who see Avla as an easy target, and she frequently picks on her. No matter the bullying, though, she seems to always be optimistic and looking to make new friends. This effort to make friends often backfires or makes her a target for ridicule, but it has worked in her favor once. Strangely enough, Avla wound up getting into the good graces of Ter'Mora and Tsundra, but not for the reason she thinks. One day she cornered the duo and tried to get into conversation with them. After some talk, she asked if they wanted to have a sleepover at her place, which was weird because who has a sleepover when you're in high school? Though the two were ready to blow her off, Tsundra came up with an idea. If Ter'Mora could convince her parents to let her go to this innocent sleepover, than it would be the perfect cover for her and Tsundra to ditch Avla and hang out all night. They agreed and Ter'Mora eventually got her parents to let her stay the night at Avla's house (but only if Avla's parents were home and watching). When dropped off, the two were surprised to find out that Avla's mother was actually a rather cool and chill person (ya know, for an adult). She let the trio do whatever they wanted, and she was quite the nice and understanding person. In the end, the two abandoned their idea of skipping out and actually stayed there the entire time. Now they have taken Avla under their wing, but mainly because they want to use her place as a way to escape the folks and chill out. For Avla, she thinks that they are now best of friends, and is unaware of their other motives. Funny enough, though, Tsundra and Ter'Mora wind up being really good friends to her while trying to pretend to be her friends. Felor and Drogue (not pictured because no space): These two twins are the right and left hand of Vortess, which isn't saying much since they are one of the few members of her gang. While they are trouble makers just like their leader, they mainly do this out of bumbling and buffoonery. The two are not the brightest pair and they make things worse out of their desire for pranks and jokes. Much of the pranks they pull are petty and stupid, but they find it absolutely hilarious when people fall for it. While Vortess prefers trouble that is more rebellious and destructive, she has recruited this duo because they are easily impressed by her. The two are in awe of her cool attitude and think that hanging with her makes them cool as well. Not only do they work as Vortess's cronies, but they often play the role of hype men for her. They do, however, often mess things up for Vortess, but she never truly punishes them as they are two of the few people who actually hang out with her. Oddly enough, Felor and Drogue seem to have a fine relationship with their parents, which constantly baffles and annoys their leader. To Vortess, parents are lame tyrants that should be blown off and ridiculed, and Felor and Drogue pretend to agree with this. At the end of it all, though, the twins get along just fine with their folks and they are always apologetic when they get caught causing trouble. And that is the end of that! Nothing really to add or say, as this was just some dumb fun doing a dumb thing! Enjoy!

Why it’s Important that Themyscira is Back For Wonder Woman 1984

Wonder Woman 1984 opens with an incredible set piece on the island of Themyscira, the island paradise that is Diana Prince’s home. In it, we see a scene from the Amazon’s version of the Olympic games. A stadium full of Amazon women watch on, cheering as the fastest and fittest compete in a multi-discipline event which showcases acrobatics and agility, horsewomanship and markswomanship.

Even though she’s just a child, Diana competes and stands a reasonable chance of even winning until she loses concentration, is thrown from her horse, and attempts to cheat to gain victory. But her Aunt Antiope (Robin Wright) prevents her, teaching Diana that “nothing good is born from lies, and greatness is not what you think.”

Though the scene may, at first glance, seem a bit of an add on for a movie that is meant as a decades-later follow up to Diana’s origin story, the electrifying flashback is incredibly important for the narrative and themes of the movie.  Jenkins says that she initially hadn’t planned on including a Themyscira scene in the sequel but ultimately realized it was not only weird not to but it was also necessary from a practical perspective, too.  

“I ended up realizing we had to have them in the second movie when I realized that lots and lots of people see the second movie who haven’t seen the first movie,” Jenkins explains to Den of Geek during a post-screening interview. “So I was like, ‘Oh yeah, if you hadn’t seen the first movie, you don’t understand who she is and that she comes from a mythical land, you would be very confused by what was happening.’ And I love the fact that there’s a lesson that she has to learn that she still hasn’t learned, as is true for all of us.”

“I think [Themyscira is] heavenly and it looks so otherworldly,” Gal Gadot adds, of the setting’s popularity amongst fans. “But it’s also the context of everything. I think that’s what makes it so profound and strong.”

How the Themyscira Flashback Also Adds to Barbara’s Story

Contextualizing Diana’s upbringing has narrative significance past exposition for those who haven’t seen the first film. It’s also important to understand Diana’s upbringing in comparison to that of Barbara Minerva (Kristen Wiig). Though Diana has lived in human society since she left Themyscira during the first world war, her formative years were spent surrounded only by women – casual sexism is not something she would have had to normalize or internalize. Diana is also the daughter of Queen Hippolyta and has great power and strength. Even in her own world, she has privileges that others do not. 

In our world, Diana’s femaleness doesn’t come with the disadvantage of being physically weaker than a man because of course she is not. Diana does not carry an innate fear of physical violence that many women do because she doesn’t have to. Women’s reactions to gender-based injustice is rarely physical because it’s not safe to start a fight with a man. Diana, on the other hand, can be physical. She simply doesn’t have to put up with the things other women do, and certainly that pre-wish Barbara does.

As the second line of that other great American classic The Great Gatsby reads (paraphrased slightly): “Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.”

Most women haven’t had the advantages that growing up in Themyscira afforded Diana. Don’t judge. Be kind. And fortunately, Diana is.

Barbara, who presumably grew up in 1950s and ’60s America, would have had a very different upbringing from Diana. Barbara’s wish is to be strong, sexy, cool, and special – traits that come naturally to Diana, in part because of her upbringing in a feminist utopia cut off from, as the comics once called it, the “Patriarch’s World.”

Yes, Diana has super strength but concepts like being “sexy,” “cool,” and “special” are not objective. Diana is beautiful, but so is Barbara and after her wish is granted she doesn’t actually look that different – she just suddenly has a confidence she didn’t have before. We don’t see Barbara’s childhood or much of her life before she meets Diana and makes a wish on the Dreamstone, but we do see the casual harassment she experiences all of the time, how vulnerable she is before she gains Diana’s strength, how often she’s overlooked and ignored, and how she has clearly internalized these feelings of not being special, sexy or cool.

Understanding this difference between the two makes it especially important that Diana is kind to Barbara, which also fits into the themes of the film. Since the passing of Steve, Diana has become somewhat isolationist, preferring her own company to that of others and she initially rejects Barbara’s offer of lunch before changing her mind and suggesting dinner. Later we will understand one of the messages of the film is that society doesn’t work if we only serve our own needs – Diana might prefer to be alone but Barbara clearly wants company and female friendship. Sometimes, you have to do things you might not want to out of kindness.

Diana isn’t perfect but her memories of the positive lessons and role models she had back on the island are part of who she is and have had a great influence on the woman she has become. Further scenes related to Themyscira give us our first look at the golden-winged suit worn by an Amazonian warrior called Asteria who sacrificed herself for the good of the Amazons. Asteria put the needs of her society ahead of her own and is celebrated by the Amazons. Diana realizes she must do the same and make the ultimate sacrifice. Once she has done so, she dons the golden armor for her showdown with Barbara, who is now Cheetah.

Themyscira Remains an Outlier in Franchise Films

Themyscira is an unusual setting for a studio tentpole movie: an entire island populated solely by warrior women. Though the lush, light, yellow, green, aquamarine color palette has become something of a signature for Wonder Woman films, it’s not something Jenkins was always conscious of—but it’s something she acknowledges.

“I hear people saying they felt like they’d never seen it before. Although, because I’m the person that made it, I’m so far down the rabbit hole I wasn’t thinking about that while I made it,” she explains.  “When people were saying that they hadn’t seen that reflected before, I was like, ‘Oh, I guess that’s true. I guess you’ve not ever seen a female battle sequence before,’ but I wasn’t thinking about it at the time.”

But it really is unusual. In the first film, Diana’s time in Themyscira is sharply flipped on its head as she joins a world inhabited by almost entirely men – the first world war. It’s a move which pushes the film into ‘Smurfette’ tropes which, thanks to Barbara, Wonder Woman 1984 does not suffer from.

Jenkins has a whole movie, an Amazons spinoff, set on Themyscira that she’s trying to get made.

“Right now everything is so up in the air, I don’t know if it will happen,” she says. “But there’s an entire Amazon movie that I think could be done after Diana leaves because those are just such great characters and it’s in her absence. The problem is you can’t really do another Wonder Woman while she’s there because she leaves as soon as she discovers her power, and we already saw that.”

An entire superhero movie in a feminine utopia – can you imagine? For now, we’ll have to make do with the brief island scenes we’re treated to and acknowledge that the movie wouldn’t be as good without them.

Meditation: What lesson can we draw from Jesus' parable about a thief in the night and the parable of the rich master who returns unexpectedly to reward or dismiss his servants for how they have served his estate while he was away? Both parables confront us with the possibility of losing everything we possess and treasure now as well as the future inheritance that is saved up for us.

The thief in the night

Jesus' story (parable) of the thief in the night brings home the necessity for careful watchfulness and staying alert to avert the danger of plunder and loss of livelhood (all that we need to sustain us now and in the future). The thief comes uninvited, especially under the cover of darkness and secrecy! While no thief would announce his intention in advance, nor the time when he would strike, lack of vigilance invites serious loss for those who have not kept their home and treasure secure at all times! The intruder strikes when he is least expected!

Don't lose the treasure of God's kingdom

What kind of treasure does the Lord Jesus expect us to vigilantly guard and protect in this present life? It is the treasure of his kingdom and the gifts and graces he has won for us - the gift of salvation purchased by the blood of Christ who died for us on the cross to free us from slavery to sin and Satan, and the gift of abundant new life which Christ won for us through his resurection victory over death, and the gift of the Holy Spirit who comes to live in us and empower us with supernatural faith, hope, and love that endure forever. The Father and the Son come to dwell in us through the gift of the Holy Spirit who makes his home with us. But we can lose the treasure and gifts of God if we do not guard our hearts and minds and hold to the truth of God's word and live according to his wise precepts, teaching, and just laws. Whose voice and counsel do you trust and follow?

Satan comes like a thief in the night to rob us of our faith and to draw us away from God's will for our lives. Satan works in the "world" (that society of men and women who are opposed to God and his commandments) and with our own "flesh" (those sinful inclinations within us that tempt us to do what is wrong and evil). And Satan wispers to us false promises to make us believe that we can find happiness and joy apart from God and his will for us.

The prophet Jeremiah reminds us that our hearts apart from God are easily deceived (Jeremiah 17:9). How easily we put off for another day what God requires of us today - to walk humbly, repent sincerely, forgive quickly, and to trust in his merciful love and grace at all times. God offers us his mercy and abundant grace (his divine presence, power, and wise counsel) to turn away from sin, deception, and disobedience. But we must not presume that we can put off for another day what must be done today.

The Lord Jesus reminds us that the "Day of the Lord" will come unexpectedly like a thief in the night. Will we be ready to receive the Lord when he comes to speak to us today, and when he ushers us to stand before his throne and meet him face-to-face to hear his final verdict on the Day of Judgment. Which verdict do you wish to hear? In Matthew's Gospel account, Jesus opens the curtain of the heavenly court room and gives a glimpse of his verdict on that day:

34 Then the King will say to those at his right hand, `Come, O blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; 35 for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.' ...41 Then he will say to those at his left hand, `Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; 42 for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.' - Matthew 25:34-36, 41-43

The Lord rewards those who are faithful and wise

Jesus ends his teaching on watchfulness and vigilance with another parable about a master and his servants (Matthew 24:.45-49). The storyline is similar. There is an element of surprise - the master suddenly returns home unexpectedly, probably from a long journey. He rewards one servant for his faithful loyalty and devoted service to his master. He has performed his service dutifully and has done all that the master required of him.

He punishes the other servant who was disloyal, disobedient, and acted shamefully. This servant was not only irresponsible - he was frequently absent from his work and misused his master's money for personal gain by throwing lavish parties (eating and drinking) for his friends. The disloyal servant also abused his fellow workers with physical force and violence - probably to make them do the work he was supposed to do for his master. When the master returns and discovers the unfaithful servant who has wasted his master's goods and mistreated his fellow servants, the master gives him what he deserves. He dismisses him from his service and throws him out of his house - and sends him to the worst of possible places - a prison of no return where there is nothing but torment and misery. Should we be surprised to see the master acting with such swift judgment? The master rewards his faithful servants with honor, blessing, and promotion in his service, and he gives to his disobedient and unfaithful servants the just punishment they deserve - the loss of honor, privilege, and joy of sharing in the master's good friendship forever.

Are you ready to meet the Lord?

The Lord Jesus calls us to be vigilant in watching for his return and to be ready to meet him when he calls us to himself. The Lord gives us his Holy Spirit so that we may have the wisdom, strength, and help we need to turn away from own sin and to embrace God's way of love, justice, and holiness. The Lord's warning of judgment causes dismay for those who are unprepared, but it brings joyful hope to those who eagerly wait for his return in glory. God's judgment is good news for those who are ready to meet him face to face when he returns. Their reward is God himself, the source of all truth, beauty, goodness, love and everlasting life. Are you ready to receive his grace and help today to walk in faithfulness and obedience, trust and hope, steadfast love and mercy?

"Lord Jesus, you have captured my heart for you. Make me strong in faith, steadfast in hope, and generous in love that I may seek to please you in all things and bring you glory. May I always be watchful and ready to answer when you draw near."

NOW IS THE TIME (SEE 2 COR 6:2)

“My Master is taking His time about coming.” —Luke 12:45

Each day is the time when Christ comes. Jesus teaches that instead of trying to know the time of His return or our death, we are to live each day, and indeed each moment, as though the Master could return. If we strive to live like that, we will be “confident and unafraid” (Is 12:2; see also Eph 3:12). The Lord is here — present at every Mass in the Holy Eucharist, present in His Word, His people, His creation. He is Emmanuel, God-with-us (Mt 1:23). When we serve the least of His people, Jesus has made it clear we are serving Him (Mt 25:40, 45).

“Why delay, then?” (Acts 22:16). Serve Jesus now. Live for Him now. Today, this moment, “turn now ten times the more to seek Him” (Bar 4:28).

Yes, the Lord expects much. Yet He gives even more. Jesus said that to whom much has been given, much will be expected (Lk 12:48). The fruit Jesus expects from us flows through us because of the Holy Spirit living in us (see Gal 5:22). His burden is light and His yoke is easy (Mt 11:30). So, “seek to serve Him constantly” (Ps 105:4). “Now is the time!”

Prayer:  Father, I trust in the Holy Spirit’s ability to make me Your faithful and willing instrument more than I trust in my own weaknesses. Fill me with the Holy Spirit right now.

Promise:  “In Christ and through faith in Him we can speak freely to God, drawing near Him with confidence.” —Eph 3:12

Praise:  Carson doesn’t search high and low for a person to minister to. He believes God wants him to converse with the person by his side. It is an excellent opportunity to be Jesus to the world. “Maranatha! Come Lord Jesus.”

Nurturing and Empathy in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

(aka: why I REALLY LOVE. this movie)

( @mycroftumbrellaswag​ and I got together last night and were talking about how wonderful this movie is, and i was like “wait there’s an essay sitting in my drafts” so here it is)

Love defeats hatred. It’s the core theme of the Harry Potter series, evident from the first budding friendships Harry makes to the defeat of the most powerful Dark wizard of all time. Love is what triumphs in the end. 

This trait is shown most powerfully in J. K. Rowling’s mother characters. Molly Weasley adopts the parentless Harry like a son of her own, sending him Christmas presents when he has none, giving him a place to stay, and making every effort to put meat on his bones when the Dursleys have failed to. Narcissa Malfoy strongarms Snape into an unbreakable vow to protect her son, and later lies to Voldemort’s face regarding Harry’s death in the interest of both her own child and someone else’s. And Lily Potter’s sacrifice for Harry is what kept him alive long enough for the series to follow him through school, what made his touch unbearable to the seemingly immortal Dark Lord.

Rowling distills these characters into a few key qualities--empathy and nurturing--and instills them in the new cast of characters in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. This time, they are not limited to the mother figures, but given to all four of the main characters. [Spoilers for, like, everything ahead.]

Newt's strength as a character and as a hero comes from his empathy, his desire to take care of and protect things (or people) that are small or hurt or discriminated against. He's not a typical action protagonist. Pop Culture Detective did a wonderful video about the portrayal of his character and how it runs against what we expect to see from a hero in an action film (this video inspired this essay OTL). Some critics dislike him as a character for being ‘weak,’ but he’s really showing a different kind of strength, one that we need to see much more in the real world.

Queenie could easily have been a traditional Strong Female Character™; the kind we’ve seen again and again in action/adventure movies. She’s beautiful, and she’s an exceedingly powerful legilimens. But she ends up being a lot more than that character. Alison Sudol said in an interview that “When I was first auditioning, Queenie was a traditional bombshell. I definitely never would have gotten the role if that remained the main focus because I never saw myself as that. She’s soft and nurturing, and we need more female characters like that to show young women you can be feminine and that actually can be a strength.” To me, she has a similar feeling to Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman (tanking through no man’s land ten film minutes after “A BABY!! :’D :’D”), but she really shows an even softer nature than that. She avoids conflict, speaks gently, and takes a liking to Jacob that’s simultaneously nurturing and romantic. She’s sweet and feminine in the most traditional sense, but that doesn’t degrade her strength or her worth for a second--just as it should be!

Jacob, on that note, wants to open a bakery so he can make his grandma proud. Though I can’t recall whether it was mentioned in the final film, he served in the first World War, which would be enough to turn anyone against violence; rather than portraying him as a warrior, the film lets him be kind and a little bumbling and very good at baking (an inherently nurturing hobby).

Tina, a former MACUSA auror, is a self-made woman who wants to play by the rules of the system but starts to resist as she discovers how they hurt the people they're supposed to protect. This appears most prominently in her interactions with Credence (which got her demoted in the first place). She’s kind and compassionate and defensive of him, and hostile toward his abusers. 

And speaking of abusers, it stands to reason that characters without these nurturing, compassionate qualities serve as the antagonists in the Potterverse. Voldemort is utterly without love or compassion, as are the majority of his followers. But in Fantastic Beasts, Rowling takes it a step further. The antagonists of the film do not just lack these qualities, they are evil because of the absence of them where they should exist.

Mary Lou Barebone has taken in several children and cares for many others in exchange for their help furthering her own goals. The film clearly suggests that she is physically abusive to those living under her roof, Credence in particular. But she attempts to establish herself as their mother, as a caring figure to whom they should come for help--this contrast makes her, for the purposes of the film, an unforgivable villain. 

Graves, too, portrays himself as a protector. He promises help to Credence, but casts him aside when he realizes (wrongly) that Credence isn’t the obscurius he’s looking for. This is what reveals, to the audience, that we’re meant to despise him. Both he and Mary Lou were meant to reflect nurturing qualities, and sometimes appeared to, but clearly had their own interests in mind. It was this lack of empathy that resulted in Credence's rampage.

So Fantastic Beasts isn’t a typical action film--its heroes avoid violence, don’t participate in struggles for power, and have unconventional goals. Most of all, though, the movie frames compassion and empathy as the most desirable traits, not inner strength or the courage to overcome your adversaries. I want more movies like this--these are messages that are far more applicable to the real world.

know im just gunna talk more reboot!shinzo ideas cuz i feel self indulgent

world building wise, its more like atla than like canon shinzo. the enterrans/matrixers aren’t all scummy, they’ve just been told lies for 300+ years. they truly believe humans to be evil demons for one reason or another. and while humans arent/werent that, there was a lot of morally gray activities going on, with humans experimenting on enterrans and constantly thinking of them as less sentient. of course there were humans who cared as well, but that didnt stop the bigotry. scuffles turned into fights turned into battles turned into wars. not helped by an actually evil mushrambo.

there were humans and enterrans who wanted peace and worked together, but they were generally looked down on and forced out of their communities. yakumo comes from such humans, who had joined together with enterrans who shared they’re ideals. (notably tho peaceful does not = humans did nothing wrong). it was only thru the two species working together that yakumo is able to be safely hidden away... for the most part.

and of course human/enterran hybrids existed from those same communities, but where of course looked down on. however, you could be a pure blood enterran and end up looking humanoid for one reason or another as well. once humans are thought to be extinct, negative focus is put on the more human looking enterrans. they’re generally seen as pretty demonic and unlucky, as propaganda makes them believe they’re the second coming of humans (they’re not necessarily wrong but...). many dont survive their childhood thanks to parental abandonment, being killed by their communities, etc. both mushra and sago find themselves in this category. 

the only humanoid enterrans to gain followings are those that 1) are extremely powerful and 2) have beast forms. but there are still many who view them negatively.

not ALL enterrans view humanoids are bad, but they’re in the minority, mostly thanks to above propaganda. generally, those enterrans come from hybrids or the past peaceful enterran lineage. all the same, its dangerous to be more human-like.

speaking of humanoid enterrans, this goes back to mushrambo. he’s truly evil because he saw humans as lesser, imperfect version of enterrans. he sought to kill them because of that and also because even in death, they were useless to enterrans (no cards to be absorbed). and as for enterrans who saw worth in humans, he believed them as weak willed, too reliant on humans, and as betraying enterran kind. he wasn’t... necessarily BORN/created evil, but thanks to torment by humans and enterrans alike, he grew into it. ...this needs more tweeking, but all the same, he’s bad to the bone.

but when yakumo’s magic attacks and ‘kills’ him, both his soul and power is split in three pieces. his power, into three gems, his soul, three new enterrans. those three are mushra, kutal, and sago. now it can be said that mushra is the core of mushrambo’s soul. mostly meaning he takes most after mushrambo as he was and thus, if he absorbs sago and kutal, he creates a near mirror image of the old mushrambo. if either sago or kutal mains and absorbs the other two, they would create a mushrambo who takes a bit more after them.

this leads to many, later in their journeys, trying to corrupt mushra and get him to kill and absorb his friends, so as to get the old mushrambo back.

and as for the gems with his power, each soul is draw to one gem in particular, which later gives them the ability to hyper form. there’s also a draw to the other souls and gem, but its much weaker and more subtle. however, it does still lead them feeling drawn to the same locations, even if they dont know or understand it. and because it was yakumo’s magic that split them, they do feel a natural draw to her, but its kinda a... neutral draw? it doesnt make them like or hate her, it just make her stick out to them.

also, they’re not as so straight good. for sago and mushra, there’s a lot of self hate in their humanoid forms/self and in humans, so being around an actual human leave them conflicted. for kutal, he still at first wants to eat yakumo, but as he spends time wit her and the other two, he becomes curious about humans and about the powers they supposedly hold. sago doesnt really trust yakumo and only sticks around because of mushra, in case yakumo turns on him. mushra was, as in canon, saved by her but thanks to a lot of internalized anger and hatred for humans and his humanoid appearance (which ostracized him), the only reason he doesnt attack her is because she saved him and he found it too... scummy and ‘human’ to kill her unprovoked. yakumo being a good person as she is implores about his hatred for humans and such. i havent worked out the details, but shenanigans ensue and they bond a bit, ending with mushra agreeing to help her find shinzo. they’re all a bit more morally grey, and only become better enterrans through they’re friendship with each other and yakumo, and from learning the true history of humans and enterrans.

later when they’re finally all together, they boys always find it easy to find each other, with just a gut feeling and generally get a long pretty well. over time their bonds only get stronger. really i just want them to have an incredibly strong bond not just with yakumo, but each other. they’re basically platonical/familial soul mates. 

yakumo is also less... perfect, must never fight back, type of gal and more... aang like. she prefers non-violence and HATES killing, but she knows things can get... bad. but it eats her up inside when she cant find a way to resolve things peacefully.
