♥️Reveling in Richonne - TOWL

#43: The Good Life (1.05)

The vibes of this whole sequence are so good. The good life truly. 🤩And Say Yes has always been a comfort ep for me, so I love that this montage has such Say Yes energy and parallels. If ever I need a pick-me-up this tranquil series of clips from Richonne's road-trip home will lift my spirits every time. I love the way this montage depicts that in finding each other again, Richonne refound the best, most at peace parts of themselves 😌...

So after that teaser with Father Gabriel, we get our babies back on screen. And it hit me that Episode 5 is the first time there are even scenes that don't feature Rick and Michonne. In episodes 1-4 of TOWL, Rick, Michonne, or both are on screen in every single scene apart from that one episode 2 teaser. Which I was very much in support of this as a long-time card-carrying member of the Give-Richonne-More-Screentime ministry. 😊

After how excellent the plot, pacing, and dialogue were in episode 4, I will say that ep 5 & 6 are a bit clunkier in those areas to me. But one thing is for sure, the Richonne content in ep 5 & 6 is still solid gold.

While these last two eps are ranked lower than episodes 1-4 for me, the good moments in these last two episodes aren't just good, they're great and include some genuinely Top 10 worthy Richonne scenes. So we definitely have to break it all down.😇👌🏽

The montage starts with that yellow truck turning the corner and then they just get right into the good vibes and romance as we see Richonne calmly driving.

I love that they use 'The Good Life' by Tony Bennett to set the mood. Rick and Michonne both just look so relaxed and happy and it’s super refreshing to see. 🥰

After everything they’d gone through thus far it was so nice to arrive at a point where Rick and Michonne are back in sync and as connected as ever.

I love the way Rick seems so content and peaceful with his hand out the window. Michonne has that man feeling on top of the world again. 😋 And then it’s so sweet the way he looks over at Michonne and the way she smiles back at him while driving. All is well with their soul and mine. 😌

Then we get one of my favorite Richonne actions ever when Rick takes her hand and kisses it. 🥹 It’s perfect.

I love the lingering depth of this hand kiss and that it’s such an illustration of how much Rick loves and cherishes Michonne. It was another soul kiss. And you can just tell how much peace Michonne brings Rick. She’s like his medicine. The cure to his anxiety and to his life. 👌🏽

Something I so appreciate about Richonne is how every moment like this feels like such an organic outpouring of love in their hearts. And it feels like it’s the exact thing they both needed. Like Rick is offering Michonne so much love with this hand kiss but you can tell it’s also for him too, because she brings him so much peace and happiness and calms any anxiety he might have about really being able to break away from the CRM this time and go home.

This might be the furthest Rick has got in terms of actually breaking free from the CRM and heading home. I know he knows it has everything to do with Michonne that they’re making it this far and actually going to get home this time because they can do anything together.

I appreciate how this hand kiss is just one of the many ways Rick’s romantic heart so naturally wants to show his love and that Michonne is so receptive to it. Like the way she looks at him while he kisses her hand. They really know how to make the love they have for each other leap off the screen. And I know she knows that her Rick is fully back by him doing this.

The song lyrics that play say “don’t try to fake romance” and truly this is just giving authentic romance. Richonne's hand kisses in Say Yes were always so incredibly sweet to me so I love that we have another precious one to add to the list.

I also love that now that Rick isn’t trying to shut Michonne out, he’s immediately back to loving on her every second. This is how Rick loves.

I appreciate that Rick and Michonne immediately started living out that sentiment to love on each other as hard as they can while they can. Loving on each other is what they're both so good at doing. And the way they love is beautiful. 🥹

So then they pull up and find all those ramen packs because the universe loves them some Richonnne. And y’all, I adore that they are matching again. 😊 It’s another signature Richonne thing. And it's great how they aren’t just matching in the same general color - no they're basically both wearing the exact Pantone shade, honey. The best. 😋

And Rick and Michonne are just at their all-time adorable when the noodles fall out of the trunk and they excitedly laugh and pick them up. Michonne looks like such a cutie when she holds up a pack and amusedly addresses their punny name “Tasteful Noods.”

Another thing I love about TOWL whenever I think about it is how Rick and Michonne's journey of refinding each other was never rooted in questioning if they're still compatible as a couple. After nearly a decade spent apart, some characters who aren't soulmates could have easily changed too much and been unable to rekindle this type of comfortable passionate chemistry so quickly.

But while Richonne had to navigate the way their circumstances had impacted and altered them, they still always operated like they knew the other was their person and the love of their life. And now that they've risen from their ep 4 timeout stronger, they're so effortlessly back to being best friends & lovers.

That's part of why I love how passionately Richonne kisses in their episode 2 reunion scene because they didn't have to hesitate, wait, or wonder how the other felt about them after all these years. Without even needing to verbally confirm it, they immediately knew the love, chemistry, and connection they have was alive and as strong as ever.

But back to this heavenly episode 5 montage - We get a sweet moment of the two having dinner together and I’m just smiling from ear to ear yet again. 😁

I love how this montage moment really highlights how far Rick and Michonne have come in their journey since that season 4 moment beside a fire.

Also, in the TWD series finale when Rick and Michonne were both writing letters alone by a fire, I remember just feeling like I cannot wait for them to be side by side again and it was lovely to see that time finally come. 🙌🏽

During this dinner in front of the mural, they’re both looking out at something but I can never tell what exactly. And then Rick puts his arm around Michonne and I love that he looks over at her first, watching her taking in whatever they’re seeing like maybe another mural/painting or something idk. Either way, Michonne is clearly the true view to Rick. 🥰

And then Michonne turns to him with the sweetest smile as they share a kiss and I just love how warm this whole moment is. It's great how they take a moment to just smile at each other before having yet another kiss infused with passion. And the way they get lost in this kiss - equally addicted to each other. 😊 They’re so blissfully in their Richonne bubble and it’s great to see.

As they drive along the scenic road they also come across a vending machine and I love how their movement is so synchronized as they look from the vending machine to a walker with a sword stuck in its neck. See how the universe always wants to provide the things Richonne needs? 😋

Also, what this episode really hammered home is that Richonne communicates with words pretty much for fun, because they’re entirely capable of having whole conversations by just looking at each other.

And in this moment they both immediately get the same idea at the same exact time to use the blade in that walker to hack through the vines covering the vending machine. And they’re so cute and determined as they go to take care of it.

Clearing out the vending machine was clearly a success as they cut to Richonne back in the car while Rick chugs a soda. And even the soda moment shows that he’s really released a lot of the stress he was carrying in the first four episodes and just seems so at home. And of course he seems at home because his home is right next to him looking beautiful while driving. 👌🏽

Also, you always know you’re truly comfortable with someone when even just sitting in silence together brings you peace and I felt that from them in these car clips.

Then this heavenly montage wants to make me teary by having Rick take out the phone with the image of Carl and just take a moment to appreciate it. Again, Rick loves his son so much. 🥲 I'll forever be moved by the love this father has for his boy.

It's heartwarming that Rick gets so much comfort from these images of his family. And it really is one of the greatest things Michonne’s ever done for him by giving him this drawing that brought his son's face back to him.

I love that Michonne looks over at him and gets to again see how meaningful having this piece of Carl is for Rick. The way she looks from the phone to him, both those Grimes boys forever have her heart. 🥹

(And she knows soon Rick will get to meet the third Grimes boy, RJ. 🥲)

I think about the OG Richonne episode Clear when Michonne was behind the wheel as Rick sat silently beside her with a hand out the window. Now, years later they do the same, no longer strangers but soulmates.

The biggest difference between the two moments is Carl is right there with them in the back of the car in Clear, and now in TOWL he's with them through a phone portrait. 🥺

Carl would be so proud of Rick and Michonne for finding their way back to each other and finally going home together. 🥲

Also just looking at Rick and Michonne in this car heading home, y’all, we really made it. 😭 All those years without them and we really made it to a point where Rick and Michonne are back on a road trip home together and at peace. And so I just adore this whole opening sequence for perfectly painting the picture of their travels home and how in love they are at every turn.

I'm so late into sebaciel fandom, just realized that many sebaciel blog are not active anymore. Imagine my surprise when I found your blog and your fics. Thanks for still being here for newbies like me. Now I'm still reading your fic "The Spare" (and it's so good feels like I'm reading canon divergence au novel version, because all of them are in characters) 😄😁🤩

One of my moot, said to me that Sebastian and Ciel's relationship are like father and son. And tell me please ignore sebaciel shipper if I got into the fandom. Now, after I read the manga and watch the anime, I'm confused of those who hate sebaciel shipper and insist that the relationship is just wholesome platonic (including my dear moot)....

Hello! I'm so sorry it has taken me so long to answer your ask!

First of all, welcome to Sebaciel nation!

What I love about Sebaciel dynamic is their power struggle. On one hand, Ciel is the master, but on the other hand, Sebastian is a powerful centuries old demon. Ciel might be the one holding the leash, but at the end of the day, Sebastian is the one who gets to decide how far he could go. He's a very tricky demon who'd try to find loopholes that benefit him or those that allow him to mess with his little lord (like in BoC with the snakes).

But then that changed. Slowly, but surely, he grows to care for Ciel and now he's finding loopholes that would benefit them. He sees himself as Ciel's butler and whatever he does now is for his master's benefits (and his too, of course). However, despite all that, he still continues to challenge Ciel at every turn. It's that complexity of their relationship that makes me ship them. They're constantly trying to out-power the other, but at the end of the day, they're a team.

Another thing that makes me ship them is because they're the only ones who know each other's true self. Ciel knows who, or rather what Sebastian is, and Sebastian knows who Ciel really is. Everyone else saw him either as the weaker, sick little brother to r!Ciel, or they know him as r!Ciel (because he's inpersonating him), but nobody has truly know him as the boy who has grown into his own person. He's not that weak, sickly boy anymore, nor was he the boy that he's trying to impersonate, and Sebastian is the only one who knows him better than anyone.

Headcanons... Funny you ask... I have two kinds of headcanons. If you've read any of my fics, you'd see that my Sebaciels are mostly fluffy & romantic, with some angst here and there, but when it comes to canon, I don't ever see them kissing, let alone saying 'I love you' or anything of that effect. Of course, I'm hoping to see them kiss in the last panel of the manga, but for them to be all lovey dovey? Eh... I don't think they have it in them...

I have some headcanons, but my one consistent headcanon is that they're soulmates and that Sebastian has finally find his match in Ciel. Even from the start, he's acknowledged that.

My favourite Sebaciel moments... BoM might be my favourite arc, but I really love Germany. From how worried Sebastian is about Ciel that he's willing to lower himself and serve Sieglinde, to how devastated he is that Ciel keeps rejecting him, and then he tries to eat Ciel and Ciel chooses him, and how relieved Sebastian looks afterwards, and of course, the part when he admits that he enjoys playing Ciel's butler. And then I love what happens after, ehen they're just hanging out in Ciel's room and teasing each other. This arc is the turning point of their relationship, or at least, these moments are when Sebastian shows us (the readers) that he has changed.

Aspen's Anniversary Sleepover

Exactly one year ago, as it was turning from July 3rd to July 4th in my Mountain time zone, I was finalizing things and getting ready to post the first fanfic I'd published in more than six years. New account, new fandom. Starting a new stage of life, really... And part of that was to reclaim my love of writing. So I did it.

A lot of things have changed in my life over the course of this particular year's worth of days. Major pieces of my life have shifted, and small things as well. A significant part of my life and happiness since then has been this fandom - writing, reading, connecting with others, developing true friendships. My life doesn't revolve around this stuff, but it has grown from the good here.

AND SO I WANT TO THROW MY FIRST SLEEPOVER PARTY WITH YOU, MY TUMBLR FRIENDS - FROM THE CASUAL FOLLOWERS TO THE MUTUAL BESTIES!

Finally having decent canon ships: Like TMNT 2012 tried and failed so hard. I swear Ramona was the only non disastrous one. Honestly I loved Leorai until someone decided to blow up the sweet home Alabama bomb right in the fans face. 🤯The rest of the ships were scandalous. And  ROTTMNT didn’t even dare to try and give us ships.😑 Like if I really want, then I might pressure my imagination to see some Kendratello or April+Raph, but nothing is canon. I think this time we deserve some shipper food people! ( So far it goes well, I kinda like the awkward crush Leo has on April. It feels real. Also I am looking forward to some Rasey.😏)

Canon LGBTQ+ turtles (or at least one):  Come on people, this is the 21th century it’s good d*mn time for some queer turtles.🏳️‍🌈 I mean ROTTMNT kinda gave us some gay Leo hints ( I swear if that guy is not gay then gay people are not even real😂), but nothing confirmed. Also what do you think which turtle should be queer? I personally vote for Raph or Donnie.😏

Cynthia Ultron being really evil: Like please let her be an actual threat!😈

Serious villains: Please, no more goofy villains like in Rise! 🥺There can be some, but I firmly believe that the mainly unserious bad guys caused ROTTMNT’s downfall. 😭No way it wouldn’t get a season 3, if the series would start off with something like the Shredder fight or the movie. (And truth to be told, I nearly dropped the show at the beginning, because it felt like it was aimed for a way younger audience with all that goofiness.)

Mutant Racism: This is the first time the turtles are out in public, they go to school and stuff. But even though they are accepted everything can’t be peachy, right? I want the tasty conflict of not all humans accepting them. Like, it would be illogical that there not a single rick b*tch in school that is disgusted by reptiles, or a bully that just found a too good reason now, to bully . Or are some kids straight up afraid of them? There must be people that are still unsure if this is not the ““ alien’s” master plan to take over the world.” ( Although that won’t go peachy, cause you try and pick a fight with ninja turtles.) 

Donnie being the biggest weeb of cartoon history: That’s self explanatory, also I wanna see him on a BTS concert. ( Boy deserves it!😇)

Purple Dragons are a High School Tech club: I just fell in love with the concept in ROTTMNT and because it would fit nicely into the new series in my opinion. ( since I guess we're gonna be in school a lot.)

Loads and loads of  fighting in school:  The boys deserve an audience.😂 Also I wanna see how the principal is gonna react to turtles destroying the school.😱

New human friends: They are bound to have some since they are going to school, right?

Chloe Curious (Singles) in Night City

Chloe was tired of sharing with her sister and two other roomates Erin and Kristen "in the middle of bumfuck nowhere" as Johnny would put it... so she ditched Strangetown in the badlands to be a merc in night city, making her money and just having fun vibing. She loves a good party night with her chooms from the Mox. She is also relieved to be away from that idiot neighbour Buzz Grunt who has it out for aliens and kept trying to get approval for them to be locked up in Division 47. Her green skin barely goes noticed in Night City, most simply think it's some cool dermal implant cyberware and same goes for her "kiroshi" eyes so Chloe can finally just chill and be herself. Sure Night City smells a bit nasty but she's better off here. She misses her sister so she tries to convince her to come along and get a job out here instead, one of those fancy corpo jobs. She also spoke to her long lost half brothers and sister about coming out here. She figured her nerdy brothers would be interested in the tech here but figured Jenny wouldn't wanna leave her family to come along. Lazlo Vidcund and Pascal all told her they'd consider it after they "deal with some side-effects of stargazing" whatever gonk that means...

Takara's Treasure - Ep 10

This will be a very critical and subjective review of this series, so if you are a fan, you better skip reading further, because I will not hold back 🥳:

I can guess (?) what the idea of ​​this series was, which in my opinion failed. They wanted (I think?) to make a classic story of an aloof, brooding, unhinged, popular seme obsessed with his little uke and a clueless, naive uke, who with his innocence, honesty and sweetness brings the seme out of his shell - and idk, maybe it worked in the manga, but not in the series. The seme came out "flat" in general, his story was quite… melodramatic instead of real, saved only by the charisma of the actor (who carried this series for me and made it bearable), the uke came out simply like a child. As for Takara: Yamato from I Cannot Reach You beats him hands down in the matter of an unhinged, obsessive, very in love seme and what's more important, it was visible in him. We know that Takara has an obsession from the fact that he mentioned it. But there is no sense of urgency, no tension in him, like in Yamato.

The whole series would be half as long if Taishi didn't repeat every. fucking. sentence Takara said, only with a question mark at the end. And if they removed all his "Eh?"s. Every sentence, every scene, their conversation was so fucking slow and drawn out. I'm not surprised at all that people watched this series by speeding it up. It wasn't a slow burn - The On1y One is a slow burn - delicious and beautiful. No, it's just... nothing happened there, Taishi was confused and wide-eyed all the time, that was the plot.

Zero chemistry between the actors

Everything revolves around Takara, Taishin's entire being is about him. He swapped his obsession with a parrot for an obsession with Takara and it even happened on the same day 😆

We know a lot about Takara. We know next to nothing about Taishin, who doesn't exist other than as a satellite of Takara. He went to his university (we don't even know what he would really like to study and where if not for that), he went to his club to be with him, he stalks him, he's interested in glass balls because he likes them, he gives him presents, he stares at him to catch his mood, he organized the whole date so that he liked it the most and at the first hint that Takara might not like it, his whole mood dropped. He's happy crying because he's liked by his senpai, it's just so unhealthy

Takara "worrying that he's like his mom" seem very far-fetched as a problem, and Taishin's reaction to his expressed worries basically comes down to "you can't be bad because in my eyes you're the best, senpai 🤩". Even if Takara had some legitimate problems with himself, Taishin wouldn't notice or care about them, he would dismiss them with "you're good senpai because you're good!", because Takara is an IDOL to him, someone who has no flaws. Or rather - someone who can't have flaws! Impossible! He's perfect! They haven't had a single conflict. Taishin himself said that everything about Takara is great and he likes everything he does, I'm sorry but it's not normal!

It also really bothers me that the actor playing Taishin is very visibly older than the actor playing Takara (in some scenes they looked like there was like a 10-year age difference between them) and he tries very hard to look younger and sweeter, speaking slowly and in a cutesy way, widening his eyes to make them seem bigger like in the manga, pouting his mouth, which gives an effect that is partly comic, partly weird. It was so unnecessary, this exaggerated childishness, they shouldn't have done it and in my opinion the series would benefit from limiting this exaggeration in Taishin's behavior

Takara called Taishin a child, slow and dumb. He was being affectionate, but yeah, that's exactly my opinion about Taishin and I will never understand the romantic appeal of such a character, not to mention the physical one 😬. I LIKE characters that are clueless, airheads, baka, himbo and even slightly childish ones, but in an open-minded, cheerful, puppy-like, curious and carefree way, NOT mentally at a child's level, but sorry, I just don't see here, what is sometimes charming in other such characters

from the beginning this couple has never made me believe in this relationship, and certainly not in their love. I mean, I do believe in idol-worshipping form Taishin's side. I might believe in Takara liking having a simple, puppy-like person around him. But not in their love. I have also written many times about the inequality in this relationship, which I saw all the time, literally until the last scene of this series, which is a big NO for me

how did you first get into Jeremy Jordan

good question—and one i very recently asked myself when the inevitable "how did i become this person" reflection happened 🫣.

i think there were many different factors (most of them not that good) that caused me to dive into obsessive mode so hard (and so quickly)—and it's definitely a "i see it now, but i couldn't back then" kind of situation. however, i'll spare you from those details XD.

the simple story is that, similar to you, i watched tangled the series and instantly fell in love with varian.

funnily enough, varian was the reason i started watching the show to begin with (coupled with the fact that i love tangled, and rapunzel, and eugene, and pascal, and max, and- 😆). i actually listened to the tts songs before watching the show 🫣 because my sister had gotten hooked on it years before. however, i only listened to the songs with mandy moore and zachary levi 🫣🫣 (cause i was like "who are these other random people, i want rapunzel and eugene"). then one day i listened to "through it all," in which varian has one line (plus an "eh" which i love now, but couldn't tell was him when i first listened XD)—and i was instantly just like: who's that.

have i listened to this one line on loop? you bet.

so i started watching the show—and loved varian from episode one—so naturally, i decide to look up the voice actor. it was jeremy....surprise. except...i didn't actually become obsessed right then. if anything, i was a little weirded out that this tiny boy was voiced by a 30-something year old man 😂 (but it's voice acting, so i was just like: wow, he did a great job 🤩...i'm going to go resume loving varian).

okay and then he sang. i knew he was good from his one line in "through it all", but wOW. adfasjkjaskfjd, on repeat forever and ever.

okay...and then a bunch of life stuff/circumstances kind of collided, and let's just say that i was feeling extremely lonely while also struggling with grief. i think there was about a two week period of this before i started actually bouncing back, and i had just reached the end of s1. now tts was doing a good job with bringing much needed happiness in my life, but...s2 had a very noticeable varian-shaped hole in it 😒.

that's when i turned to jeremy jordan youtube. it started off (the first hour) pretty mild—just some of his disney medleys, or the greatest showman video, or just the ones with millions of views—but it very quickly turned into a full out jeremy jordan youtube spiral™️ XD.

i think in part, i latched on so quickly because jeremy and i are actually very similar people in general. i think at the point of extreme change that i was in at the time, it was just nice to "know" someone who was like me—and it definitely helped that there was easy access to extensive jj content. on a slightly different note, this is absolutely the reasoning behind the fact that if i had a chance to see jeremy live, i would choose one of his concerts over, say, gatsby—i am obsessed with jeremy jordan as jeremy jordan XD (hello akp).

MIRACULOUS LADYBUG: AWAKENING

SPOILER REVIEW

Since my last post on Miraculous Ladybug was so vitriolic, I feel like now I have to give my two cents on the film. In my opinion? It was great! It reminded me why I like the concept of the story to begin with. I think sincerely that the movie did a by far better job at telling this story in under two hours than the series did in over 5 seasons.

It's not perfect, mind you, but it is a really good time! The animation is gorgeous, the action sequences were amazing, the story is straightforward and it doesn't make you feel like everyone except for Marinette is an idiot. It does help boost enjoyability not having Thomas Austruc mansplaining at every chance what a perfect society looks like, what the ideal man and woman act like, and what a perfect and healthy romance appears like.

Marinette is lovely! Her characterization is so on point. This time round, you can truly believe that she is a normal girl, with a normal life, just down on her luck. And her character arch is linear and fairly well structured. I really liked that they showed that her failings and clumsiness mostly boil down to uncertainty and self-doubt. It's not the Ladybug powers granting her agily and resilience, the mask just help bring what was already there to surface (something I did not always see in the series especially in the earlier seasons). Adrien/Chat Noir is one of the two characters that most benefits from the adaptation, IMO. He is ever kind and caring but he's not a door mat or a prize to be won. The scene in which he lashes out on his father, calling him out on his neglect: that was just beautiful to witness. And Gabriel Agreste! Oh, Gabriel! Finally, finally this character makes sense and acts like you would expect and hope he would. Surprise, surprise, he actually makes a compelling villain when written right and manages to look competent and threatening. As for everyone else...everyone else mostly disappear in the background and act as their tv counterparts (except for Cloe in the end *cough* *cough*).

While it's a big jarring every time they start singing, the songs 'Better Together' and 'Courage in me' are really catchy and nice. Heck, even the rendition of the main theme 'You are Ladybug' is fun and enjoyable.

The romance is obviously the main aspect of the story and I think it plays out really nicely here! While there obviously isn't much time to fully delve into the love square and you are left a bit wondering why Marinette is so hung up on Adrien when her relationship with Chat Noir absolutely steals the show by being romantic, heartfelt and wholesome, I still enjoyed it. Emphasis on Ladynoir stealing the show, especially when the two spar on the roof, duet in a scene that reminded me of the Moulin Rouge and face the final threat.

The side story of Marinette feeling slightly embarrassed by her dad was unnecessary, but whatever, I guess.

Plag isn't especially great here, but Tikki, oh my gosh, Tikki is a SAVAGE! 🤩 Ten seconds after meeting Marinette and is already about to kick the girl's ass!

Anyway, that is to say, I had a great time watching this, and I hope you all do to.

yeaa i get it but honestly i love that game 😂 ive probably put in 500+ hours into it on 360. the only person i haven’t played as is sherry because i dont like her but ive gotten a rank in every category possible for the others 😅 it’s really fun co op too! i actually got it recently on my series s so i can go back through and 100% it again since i recently did it on ps5 😅

i really liked the multiplayer they had on there too like if Capcom wants to make a good multiplayer they need to bring that back and just fix what was lacking and broken.

like honestly between 6 and 5 i think 5 is the worse game because of Sheva. like it’s literally unplayable solo but in 6 they overhauled the partner ai and it’s nearly perfect as far as resi games are concerned.

like a lot of people have been giving it more love recently because it does have a lot to offer it’s just kind of too much going on with the 4 campaigns but like leon’s campaign is my fave cuz it’s most like classic resi, piers is my favourite character (i screamed when his face model followed me on my old ig 😂) and i love the puzzles in jake’s but holy shit ustanak i fucking hate him i hate stalker enemies they’re not scary they’re just annoying and get in the way 😤

Today's compilation:

Points in Time 005 1999 Drum n Bass

Excellent slate of mid-to-late 90s drum n bass and jungle bangers here that was put out by the LTJ Bukem-run Good Looking Records, the long-time premier label for all of that soul-soothingly atmospheric and 'intelligent' stuff. Here we have the fifth installment in their Points in Time series, something that appeared to have been launched in order to regularly remind folks about all the serious heat from GL's past that should *never* be forgotten.

But It looks like this release in particular was issued in two different formats. One is a double-disc that includes a DJ mix by Tayla—who himself is a producer and DJ that got his start on Good Looking back in 1993—and the other is a triple-12-inch that includes six of the nine songs that are also on the CD version's first disc. And the one that I happened to listen to for today's post is the triple-12-inch.

So, ultimately, I seriously dig almost all of these tracks, but I think the two most essential listens here are undoubtedly London duo Blu Mar Ten's "Futureproof" and early drum n bass pioneer The Invisible Man's lengthy "Stormfields."

"Futureproof," originally off of Blu Mar Ten's first release on Good Looking in 1997, is legitimately one of the greatest pieces of jungle that I think I've ever heard in my life, and is probably peak material for this whole atmospheric style writ large. There's just something that's so extra special about a certain type of song that can paradoxically transmit both a feeling of calm and chaos at the same time, and this is a track that manages to pull it off wonderfully, with its "Amen" breaks furiously chugging along within a meticulously crafted framework of vast outer-space ambience and saucy touches of smooth jazz sax. Just such an unbelievably breathtaking and satisfying all-time stunner as far as I'm concerned 😌.

And then "Stormfields" is this near-11-minute, cinematically chill journey of sorts that's also on an outer-spacey tip from 1997. It encases its increasingly complex drum and bass parts in cheery pecks and splotches of bloopy acid, as light guitar synths pluck from behind on top of thin and squealy string pads. A really wondrous pupil-dilator to repeatedly zone out to and lose yourself within 👍.

So some pretty incredible feats of drum n bass and jungle magic on this one. Really wouldn't expect anything less from Good Looking, though, because they seriously do tend to be that consistently amazing 🤩.

@abstractelysium - I’ve seen this show referred to as Gay Chicken, Infidelity Rooster, and Lunar Cock, so I love that all of y’all decided that Moonlight Chicken just wasn’t serving the juiciness we needed.

Now onto the COLORS!

Let me apologize for the confusion. I do not think Wen and Jim are color-coded, at least not in the way many other shows code their leads. Instead, the colors are symbolic of the moon and the sun. The Eclipse and Big Dragon both incorporated the moon and the sun into the narrative of the story. Colors, in both, were used to symbolize the moon and sun.

In my initial analysis for The Eclipse, I pinned Ayan as the moon (alone) and Akk as the sun (popular); however, Ayan was red and Akk was blue. Big Dragon did something similar by making Yai the moon and Mangkorn the sun, yet Yai’s safe spaces were during the day while Mangkorn’s were at night. These shows are demonstrating how the moon and sun need each other, and they must meet in the middle to to do so (during an eclipse or at dawn).

The moon is represented by yin which is darkness, water, and feminine energy, and the sun is represented by yang which is light, fire, and masculine energy (ex. Ayan and Akk eating at night by the water on the blue chairs versus them fighting on the red mat). Both are opposites but compliment each other and are needed for the balance of life. We saw this to some degree as well in KinnPorsche with Kinn (water) and Porsche (fire).

If Moonlight Chicken is doing the same, it is saying Wen is the moon and Jim is the sun, yet they exist in the opposite worlds. Wen’s apartment is full of cool tones and he wears blue in the first episode, while Jim’s house is full of warm tones and he wears red throughout the first episode.

Even when they come together in Jim's living room, they align with their colors.

Jim’s life is constantly full of people. Wen is alone most of the time. However, Jim naturally doesn’t start his day until much later because he works at night, while Wen has a day job. The visuals are showing us how they compliment each other. Night and Day. Dark and Light. Accessible and Isolated. Jim is not a red rascal. Jim is the sun and gives life to others through his warmth. Wen is not a blue boy. He is the moon and helps light the path for others in times of darkness.

Heart and Li Ming also show this dynamic.

Heart, the moon, is isolated and alone, but Li Ming’s life is full of interactions and conversations with others. Li Ming is the sun who gives Heart warmth and Heart will be the one to light Li Ming’s path during dark times.

There will still be an exchange of colors. There always is (unless you are Sam on GAP who REFUSES to wear Mon’s pink! AHHHHHH!), but the exchange won’t be as much about feelings as it is about balance. As the pairs begin to harmonize, we will see them exchange colors (or hues of them).

The moon only shines because it reflects the sun’s light, and the moon provides stability (the Earth would wobble without the pull of the moon, and it creates a rhythm through the tides). In order to have life, we need both the sun and the moon. We need their light. We need their love.
