What kind of lives do these people live? Genuinely. I am incapable of imagining how people like this still exists. Ignoring the obvious cringe factors, the tripple whammy of "SJW owned!!!!", "make me a sandwich" and the fucking Chuck Norris. Fucking Chuck Norris. These people saw this joke in like 2011, found it funny and just... Never stopped? Over 10 years later? But they still got a clearly modern zest because of those gross AI generated images. So people like this just lets the world flow by them? Unchanged, unchallenged. Never picking up on anything, but still moving into that same future as everyone else, acting like they are in a world that no longer exists. I don't even think they know It's gone. I keep seeing people on my dash who I KNOW have no ill intent reblogging posts that have a veneer of trans-inclusive feminism without realizing it's gender essentialist trans-inclusive radfem shit. As far as I can tell it's a recent resurgence of the ideology, not something that's stayed constant and I'm only now realizing it, although I'm not certain of that.

So like. Here's a reminder that gender essentialism is bad even when it's trans inclusive. Here's a reminder that "society is inherently about men/mascs oppressing women/fems and the agency and responsibility for that societal structure is always and only perpetuated by the men/mascs" is radfem shit even when it's trans inclusive.

Just because someone's gender essentialism isn't biological gender essentialism doesn't mean it isn't gender essentialism. Just because a post is trans inclusive doesn't mean it's discussing gender identity or societal gender dynamics in a healthy way.

Just because a post is free of transphobia or transmisogyny does not mean it is free of sexism or racism or intersexism or ableism or transandrophobia or exorsexism or homophobia or biphobia or any other kind of bigotry. Just because a post is free of transphobia or transmisogyny does not mean you get to shut off your brain and reblog it uncritically, safe in the knowledge that if it's not transphobic it's a Good Take™.

Responding to this post as a separate post because I want to respond to something that I think is beyond the scope/intention of the original post (and honestly the scope/intention of the response in the linked post) but that, like.

I want to respond to it because it's been churning in my head.

Specifically the idea of the Protestant Work Ethic and trying to earn your way into heaven.

Because that's the very antithesis of what the Gospel is.

Over and over, it is made very clear that you cannot earn your way into heaven. (Titus 3:5 and Ephesians 2:8-9 are the ones that come immediately to mind, but there are more than that. (I also like - Romans 4 and the entire discussion about it being faith and not works and especially Romans 4:4-8.)) Literally one of the entire points is that you are stuck in your sin and you cannot get out and no matter what you do, you cannot earn your way in, but God loves you and chose you and wants you, so He paid your debt Himself (Jesus) and is giving you His righteousness - His perfection - because He was the only one who could earn His way in.

God is for you, not against you.

Are there things you should be doing? Yes. (Ephesians 2:10 talks about that, too.) But, like. It's not to earn your way in. It's out of love and gratefulness to the One who got you out of your horrible predicament? And then on top of that, made you a co-heir with Him?

Because it's...He paid for you to get in and then also you got adopted as a child of God? And someone described it once as good works after that being like when a child makes a drawing for their dad and their dad hangs it on the fridge? It's not to earn anything; it's because you love Him, too?

So, like - I want to know where the Protestant Work Ethic went wrong. Why so many people think it's about earning their way when it isn't that at all.

It's a gift. It was always a gift.

I don't want to respond to the direct post, 1) because the vote is over and it passed, 2) because I don't feel like being thorough about my commentary which means asking friends of friends at the site and looking up papers and permits. But holy cow, it keeps popping up on my dash.

1) Copper mines do not produce toxic waste. If anyone is telling you this, they're lying to you or stretching the truth, max.

1.2) If you leave a hole in the ground alone for long enough, the sulfides in the rock oxidize and produce an acid that leaches metals. That's what they're talking about. This does not happen to active mine sites because the water in the tailings/waste is reused and must be near-neutral. Calcium is also added to neutralize the acid. When the mine is shut down, when properly closed, all surfaces are covered so this oxidation can't take place.

2) Mining on the Michigan peninsula is one of the few places we have records of pre-Columbian copper use because the copper is in native form. It's very disingenuous of them to not mention this. See here.

3) Tailings dam specifications are built with geology in mind. They're huge. I don't think people understand how big (or small) they actually can be. But essentially, the engineering specs reflect the regional qualifications of the dam. A 100-year flood build design likely reflects the overall dam but not a location near a drainage basin which would be certified to higher spec. I worked at a mine that was near a fault and the qualifications were 1.2+ factors of safety over the shake potential for that kind of fault zone. Which is how it works for all engineering designs. The design plans would not have gotten this far in the USA without three licensed engineers looking at the plans.

Anyway. Don't lie to people right over my salad. It's absolutely okay not to want a mine in your backyard. There are actual reasons to get up in arms if you feel that way. But lying to people is not the way to do it.

i'm sure you know this already but:

COTL ISN’T DELETING THEIR GAME.

1) in terms profit they'd pretty much shoot themselves in the foot with that decision, and as protest it's not very effective to make unity listen.

2) if they were, there would've been a much bigger announcement than a twitter tweet.

3) they confirmed they're not in both the discord and the twitter. after the deletion tweet went viral. which...ok.

4) it's probably a scare tactic to take advantage of the unity news to get more people to buy their game.

5) it probably worked.

so many people are focused on the unity issue that i don't think it's often talked about how much of a shitty pr stunt that was by the social media manager. people are fearmongering, sure, but the initial seeds were planted by that twitter post that really should've gone through some extra foresight.

hope they enjoy their extra revenue.
