and welcome back to the off week. i really thought that i could get away with no update this week, but alas. contracts have been signed and ice cream has been made. dogs have appeared and red bull marketing continues to be, well, red bull marketing. so today is april 14, 2024 and lets just dive right in head first to the most bemusing smattering of information that is on this post

were covering a few things this update, each more perplexing than the last:

-landos continued dedication to the bit -charles leclerc (as an entity) -fernando alonsos cryptic way of speaking -carlos sainz tempting the devil (among others) -the bonkers social media highlights of the week -brocedes

so lets just get lando out of the way. back on the government mandated mclaren update. first, he was on the forbes 30 under 30 europe list for sports and games. now that im writing this, im not sure lando actually acknowledged this at all? it might have just been the mclaren ig acc. also his ln4 official account called him pookie. not once but twice. who is running this account. we need need answers.

he also stared directly into a camera not once but twice:

yeah man. idk either.

and lastly, if you remember last week lando ran into alex's grandma at the airport. alex albon posted photos of her at the end of the race weekend with a signed lando norris cap and the caption "left suzuka with some souvenirs...well grandma did"

moving on from that. mr leclerc. the miserable soup can. tho this week he was not miserable at all. i know! i was surprised too!

first! we have the tiny mystery dog:

his name is leo leclerc. in pretty much every photo of him charles is holding him like a tiny purse or perhaps the way sharpay evans would hold boi in high school musical. and many, many people were keen to point out that not only! can he be friends with lewis hamilton's dog roscoe next year, but also, he seems to have taken a page out of lewis hamiltons book in getting a dog and naming it after his biggest rival (roscoes name is quite close to nico rosberg and leo pretty much means lion which is max's nickname) (in case you dont know who nico rosberg is, worry not we will get to him at the end of this post)

and then, more interestingly, we have the launch of lec. charles's ice cream. and let me tell you, if anyone could have managed to look miserable while eating ice cream, it would have been charles, but alas he did not. there is life in his eyes this week!

tho he did say a few things that made me and others fear for his mental state, including comparing ice cream flavors to ferrari potential:

and oh yeah did i mention the flavor names are insane??

vanillove. salty carammmmel. peanut caramel tango. swirly pistachi-oh! and chocolate crunch.

and, as we know, charles and lewis will be teammates next year. lewis is vegan (and has an interesting affinity with vanilla ice cream but well get to that later) and charles had this to say when asked about making a vegan flavor for lewis:

"we were talking about it the last time on the track! he has this new alma project of his, which is very nice because he has developed a new soft drink, while i have ice cream. so surely, one day, when he arrives at ferrari, we will celebrate with my ice cream and his drink."

he was also asked by the italian press "to verstappen, what can we offer to him? chamomile ice cream to calm him down a little bit?" and charles said this in response:

"no, we have a good relationship. what im interested in is beating him on the track to start with, and that's what we're working on. i'll also give him the flavor he likes and then we'll try to beat him on the track."

which is all kinds of unhinged. especially coming from the same week that he got a dog and basically named it after max. (they still dont follow eachother on ig lets remember)

it was also pointed out by a few people, mainly on this tumblr post, that this had the same but also opposite energy as lewis saying this back in 2014 about if he remembered the first time he met nico rosberg: "I remember the first time I looked at girls. I remember when I met my girlfriend, the first time I had sex... But I never actually think about the first time I met Nico. I don't remember things like that." which is just. what a thing to say. anyway, we will get to brocedes later on this post and this will all make sense. or perhaps it wont. brocedes is an enigma.

now you might be wondering Why an f1 driver would make ice cream, given the fact that they adhere to pretty strict diets due to the weight restrictions on the cars and all that. well, aparently, that was the very reason why charles decided to make the ice cream in the first place:

"as a professional athlete it is crucial for me to maintain a healthy lifestyle where my performance is strongly linked to commitment, training and fitness. this, however does not prevent me from indulging in some small little forbidden pleasure, particularly that of a food i love."

which is to say, he definitely made his own ice cream brand (which has like protein and less calories in it or something) so that he can eat a whole pint of ice cream after he gets fucked over by the ferrari strategy once again.

and how does it taste? couldn't tell you, its only in italy and i live in the us. so if someone wants to teleport me ice cream i would be unbelievably pleased.

another driver was also hungry this week, but not hungry for ice cream, sweet treats or even food (well perhaps food. you do kind of need that to live), nay he was hungry for a contract renewal.

can you guess who it is?

if you guessed logan sargeant...well you would be incredibly incorrect.

but if you guessed fernando alonso, you would be right!

he extended his contract at aston martin. we dont know exactly how long it is, but it is multi year, meaning that he will be at aston until at least 2026. the aston martin team announced it in the funniest way they possibly could.

fernando also said This about the contract extension, which is intriguing and amusing:

"This is the longest contract I ever signed in my career. Something that will keep me linked with Aston Martin for many years to come.”

which leads many people to think that after hes done racing for them hes going to stay on as an engineer or a coach or an advisor or something else. which would be silly and goofy and evil of him as usual.

also on the contract hunt is one carlos sainz jr.

as we know, he was supposedly offered a contract at audi (currently stake) for 2025, but! he was also reportedly offered a mercedes contract!

this may come as a shock to many people because 1. mercedes pretty distinctly said that they hadn't been talking to carlos, 2. kimi antonelli is set to test driver a merc f1 car this week and 3. toto said last week (more or less) *cue austrian accent* "well you know the driver market is very fluid and we do not want to rush into any decisions blah blah blah"

reportedly though, carlos has not signed it because of the terms of it.

the contract that he was offered is a 1+1 contact, meaning that he is signed for one year with the opportunity to resign for a second year if hes doing well. he wants to be on the same contract at george russell, who has a 2+1 contract.

merc is probably doing this because they want to keep their options open for 2026. the options being signing kimi antonelli. who they really, really dont want to lose to another team (red bull).

also in terms of contract news, aparently red bull are reportedly considering re signing checo for 2025. this is rumored to be a 2 year contract. but he has to keep performing to the level that he is now. and historically, checo starts the season well and then it goes downhill.

and lastly, apparently yuki is reportedly on audis short list if carlos goes elsewhere

which takes us to an update on the open seats:

and there was other stuff (carlos continues to seemingly bike across all of europe as does valtteri, logan and alex went golfing, several drivers went to the monaco tennis finals something or other etc etc) but thats the most important highlights

and so. without any further ado. a (very very abridged version) of the blood feud between sir lewis hamilton and nico rosberg

but before we get there, in case youre thinking to yourself, wow saph, your writing is so interesting and compelling! how do you do it! the answer is that i might not have a college degree in shitposting, but i do have a college degree in both history and writing, which together is a deathly combo that i wield like a very very dull double edged sword. in any case, should any of you want to read a more full length and in depth version of this feud, i am writing it out a la insane academic paper with the help of a few friends. why isn't the full version on this post? well this post is already too long and were barely at race 5 of 24 plus this is about the 2024 season and this drama is more than 10 years old. also, i did very very fully intend to have the insane brocedes lore post done before i updated this, but that is not physically possible so for now you will have to deal with this short version. and when i finish it, i will post it and link it here on this post for your viewing pleasure.

regardless. the blood feud.

was any real blood spilled? i have no idea. but nico rosberg did end up under a sink at one point in a hotel room in japan. thats neither here nor there tho and we dont know any more than that other than that it happened.

the feud is called a few things. the brocedes civil war. the silver war. the hamilton rosberg rivalry. any way you spin it, its about lewis and nico. and who might these two be? well im glad you asked:

we are already familiar with sir lewis hamilton:

8 7 time world champion, knighted by the queen of england, mercedes driver, owner of one dog named roscoe, enjoys surfing, fights for equal rights, all around good guy

and our other player, nico rosberg, who i have mentioned a few times:

1 time world champion, ex formula 1 driver for williams and mercedes. from germany but lives in Monaco, essentially a YouTuber, married with two daughters, now a sky sports presenter, was called brittney by the other drivers back in the day because of his hair.

tho this is Current Cool and (mostly) Chilled Out lewis and nico. which is. not the lewis and nico were talking about. nuh uh. at the time of these tales, these two were general pr nightmares and teammates at mercedes. lewis was not yet knighted. they were not nearly as reserved or chilled out At All. and over the course over the four years they were teammates at merc they managed to go from this:

(yes that is nico throwing his p2 hat at lewis i think this was in 2015 after lewis had just won the championship again. and it wasnt a friendly little toss toss. he wailed it across the room)

and these two. as you might have guessed. good freaking lord. theyre something.

so. we've talked about rivalries. we've briefly touched on charles and max, and lewis and seb, and we've talked about friendships like carlos and lando. lewis and nico put all of them to shame.

again, i will go deeper than this on the other post that is not done yet, but heres what you need to know to understand this season:

-as i said, these two used to be teammates, first in karting when they were kids and then again years later when they both finally made it to f1 at mercedes.

-because they were childhood friends, the lore here runs very very deep. both have said some of the best times in their lives were when they were teenagers trashing hotel rooms, wrestling and eating pizza and vanilla ice cream and kelloggs frosties late at night between karting races

-they were pretty unlikely friends. lewis grew up pretty poor and his dad worked 4 jobs to support his karting, he was bullied and dealt with a lot of racism. nico grew up wealthy as the son of an f1 world champion. both of them were different than the other karting kids (in opposite ways) and this is probably what drew them together

-they were teammates at merc from 2013-2016. this coincided with Peak Merc Dominance (beginning in 2014) and it was man against man from 2014-2016 as they both tried to beat the other in the championship. ultimately, this is what caused their friendship to deteriorate because they both became transfixed on beating eachother. after rosberg wrecked lewis's monaco race in 2014 lewis said that they were no longer friends, and there was also the scene where rosberg THREW his p2 hat at hamilton in the cool down room in texas in 2015 (pictured above), among many many other things (not counting all the times they crashed into eachother) (perhaps on purpose, perhaps not)

-lewis won the championship in 2014 and 2015 and basically, nico refused to be a second driver to lewis and wanted to beat him, he came very close in 2015 and then sacrificed literally everything (as in. stopped sleeping in the same bed as his own wife levels of sacrificing everything) in 2016 to beat him and win the world championship. including his friendship with lewis. he says that this was because winning the championship was his childhood dream. (his dad was also an f1 driver and had won the world championship).

-the championship in 2016 came down to the last race in abu dhabi, and reportedly nico was so nervous beforehand that he couldn't eat anything beforehand except for kellogg frosties, the very same cereal that he and lewis would eat straight out of the box as teens, but now they were hardly on speaking terms and he was battling him for the championship. they were playing all kinds of mind games with eachother at this point. this was the era of f1 where yeah you knew merc would probably win the race but you tuned in to see if nico and lewis would kill eachother on track. nico ended up winning the race and the championship and announced his retirement from the sport a few days later at the fia prize giving ceremony

-since then, lewis basically refuses to say nicos name and is generally awkward about the whole thing, but he and nico reportedly live in the same apartment building in monaco and lewis gets nicos daughters presents at christmas. nico pretty much looks murderous any time anyone suggests that lewis has lost his touch with racing or with the car and has said that in his heart lewis is still his best friend.

-lewis chilled the fuck out after this, complete 180 style. started being a pr dream, stopped calling out other drivers for not following him on twitter, doing activism, all of the good stuff we know him for now. theres one really heartbreaking interview in 2021 where they ask him if hes a better driver than he was in 2016 and he says "yes. and a better teammate."

-why is this important? well. nico as i said is a sky sports presenter and he is going to be at the chinese gp next week. also, you lot have been asking me to talk about them and simply there was no other place to put this.

-also, this has been lewis's worst start to an f1 season in his whole career (18 years). this is the first time that he hasn't had a top 5 finish in the first 4 races. yes, he has already signed with ferrari, but people are still wondering if hes lost his touch with the car, or if the car just kinda sucks. and i think nico is going to shoot some absolutely firey looks over this.

-also theres probably going to be a decent amount of talk about mercedes at the china gp because of all the contract talk going on around mercedes right now, so good to at least be somewhat familiar with the merc lore

and speaking of china! again! i remind you all! i am not watching the chinese gp live because i am being smited by my work schedule! the update will be late! but it will come! trust me! its also going to be an absolutely bonkers weekend! i know i say that every weekend but!! im feeling it in my baby seal boots this time!! does anyone even read this far on the post!! idk anymore!!!!

Sorry i tried to scroll past but, i know nothing about f1 other than max verstappen is fast, my dad doesnt like lewis hamilton, fast car goes in a loop and sometimes expodes. Could you give me a crash course in f1 drama? Im very intrigued. Whats the tea as it were?

a terribly loaded question, but i will do my best. i’ve talked about some of the drama before like the red bull second seat and the chronicles of haas but allow me to briefly try my hand at explaining the nightmare that is the upcoming silly season

under the cut we go

silly season is when the drivers go through contract renewals, extensions and switches. usually it’s confined to the first half of the season (march-july) but it has been known to extend all the way to the last race of the season and they like to switch people around at random sometimes. driver contracts are complex, there’s a lot of money involved and basically You Are The Face Of The Team so if you have a shit season then you make the team look bad. but at the same time you could have a shit season because you have a shit car. it’s sticky stuff.

so. there are only twenty seats in formula 1. 10 teams. each team gets two drivers. (there’s also reserve drivers but we’re not going to get into that). who ends up with a contract is largely up to the teams, they can pull the contract out from under people they can also cut you mid season. they’ve done it before.

of the 20 drivers on the grid, 14 of them have contracts expiring at the end of the year. yes. 14. you see how this could get complicated.

so let’s meet the teams.

red bull racing. they came first this year (and last year) in the championship. like aggressively first. like they won the championship by over 350 points. they are definitely the team to beat. but if you end up with a seat at red bull, you do have to deal with max verstappen being your teammate and he won all but three of the races last year. he’s the golden boy. red bull are also notoriously silly when it comes to contracts and famously swap people mid season who aren’t performing.

mercedes. merc is home to 7 time world champion lewis hamilton and they have won the championship a great many times, though not since 2021. they are kind of in their flop arc and their car the last 2 years has been pretty garbage, but they have still made it work because they were able to come in second last year.

ferrari. god help the poor little meow meows with a ferrari contract. ferrari is a notoriously great team and they’re trying to get back to the top again but their strategy every single time has fallen short. to the point where their drivers are the ones doing the strategy in their cars while driving. they came in third last year and have been decently consistent at getting first in qualifying and then getting beat by max verstappen on race day.

mclaren. they’ve definitely worked their way up over recent years. they ended fourth last year and have had some championship wins before but not nearly as many as say merc and ferrari. their team ceo (owner? director?) is a little interesting and their car started out a pile of flaming hot garbage at the beginning of the year but they did manage to get their shit together.

aston martin. they are owned by canadian billionaire lawrence stroll, father of lance stroll (one of the drivers for the team). they’ve undergone several name changes over the recent years (force india, racing point, etc). they positively slayed at the start of the season and then one day they sucked. they finished fifth in the championship.

alpine. the frenchest french team. they’re (i think?) still partially owned by the french government. both of their drivers are french. (their drivers also hate eachother but we’ll get to that. just know they’re in the middle of a modern french civil war). they had the opportunity to have a good rookie driver (oscar piastri) this past year but in a thrilling twitter battle, he publically flamed the shit out of them and went to mclaren instead (and slayed). they're usually solidly middle of the pack. they ended sixth in the championship.

williams. williams has been one of the back of the grid teams for the last many years but they have finally started to get their shit together and don’t quite suck as much as they used to. all of the points this year were scored by only one driver though (except one but we’ll get there). they came in seventh.

alpha tauri. they are the sister team of red bull. so technically redbull owns both teams (meaning they can swap drivers between teams. they like doing this.) they’ve just kind of been There for awhile but they did slay towards the end of the season when one of their drivers led the race for several laps. basically tho, this team is the gateway to redbull. they came in eighth.

alpha romeo. recently renamed to stake f1 team (but sometimes they are going to be called kick sauber. this is a whole other drama post and i’m not getting into it). they’re also just kind of there. generally unproblematic. seems that really great drivers who get ixed out of a contract for a younger driver end up here or young drivers who are in their early years are here before they go to a better team. they ended ninth this year.

haas. oh haas. goofy team. they suck. point blank they suck. they keep loosing sponsors because they suck, they don’t win ever (one time they came first in qualifying last year). they cursed themselves in australia in 2018 by not tightening their tires and its been downhill ever since. they came 10th. their team principle got let go (fired?) who’s to say today.

so those are the teams. it is important to note that:

-there is a cost cap. each team is allowed to spend no more than 135m per year.

-not all cars are equal. some things are standard. they all undergo the same testing. but the cars are all very different. so you can be a good driver but stuck in a shitty car. which makes it impressive if you are doing well in a shitty car.

let’s meet our drivers!!!

starting with the guys who’s contract is not ending in 2024:

max verstappen. 3 time world champion. 26 years old. general beast on the track. he dominated the whole season. he’s currently racing for red bull and has a contract with them through 2028.

lewis hamilton. 7 time world champion. 39 years old. he drives for mercedes. he will not leave mercedes until he retires. he really really wants to win an 8th world championship and is willing to stick it out a few more years as long as merc still believes in him. his contract expires in 2025.

george russell. the other merc driver. 26 years old. hes aggressively british and says thinks like blimey unironically. walking meme. got his merc seat in 2022 right when they entered their flop arc by getting his tractor of a williams to finish second in qualifying in the middle of a rainstorm. his contract expires in 2025.

lando norris. mclaren driver. 24 years old. he has notably never won a race in his five years of formula one (mostly because right when his car finally was good enough max verstappen was 20 seconds ahead of anyone) but he is regarded as Very Good. he has only ever driven for mclaren. and even though there is another year left on his contract there is mass speculation that he will not renew his contract with mclaren after it expires and he may move up to one of the top teams (red bull, merc, ferrari) (tho i think he doesnt hate himself quite enough to go to ferrari). his contract expires in 2025.

oscar piastri. the other mclaren driver. 22 years old. this was his rookie season and he positively slayed. like people compared his rookie season to lewis hamiltons rookie season. he also had the positively funniest start to his rookie year because alpine announced that he would be driving for them (he had been their reserve driver and in the alpine academy) and he posted a tweet that basically said yeah thats false i never singed anything with you and im going to race with mclaren instead (he dodged a bullet) and then alpine tried and failed to sue him for $4m USD. he signed a contract extension with mclaren this year and his contract expires in 2026.

lance stroll. aston martin driver and son of the aston martin owner. hes doing ok, tho there was conspiracy that he wanted to quit and have a tennis career awhile ago. but basically since his dad owns the team it seems that hes guaranteed a seat for as long as he wants one.

so now. moving onto the good shit. the people who have contracts expiring in 2024. hold onto your hats people.

charles leclerc. (everyones favorite slutty little soup can). 26 years old. he is currently at ferrari and he has been since 2019. notably, he was given the longest contract in the history of ferrari after a stellar rookie season at sauber (renamed to alpha romeo, renamed to stake f1) where he got the tractor of a car consistently into the points. having the longest contract in the history of ferrari was a flex at the time, but now its likely how he will introduce himself at therapy sessions. ferrari have fucked this man left right and center up the ass with a plastic lunchroom spork. hes talented, he can drive, and he can drive well. but the strategy that ferrari has absolutely sucks. either something is wrong with the car (see him blowing out his gear box on the formation lap in monaco, his car completely crapping out and spinning into the barrier in brazil before the race even started) or they fuck up his pit stops or put him on the wrong tires and honestly its just frustrating. but will he leave??? likely not. you'd have to pry ferrari out of his cold dead hands and at this rate that might be where this is headed though there has been some minor speculation of him going to another team like merc or red bull, but merc doesnt have any open seats and red bull is a whole other dumpster fire of drama. ferrari are going to have to pay him a boatload of money to make him stay.

carlos sainz. the smooth operator. 29 years old. ferrari driver. previously carlos was at toro rosso (renamed to alpha tauri), renault (renamed to alpine), and mclaren before signing with ferrari. he has been at ferrari since 2021 and has voiced that he would like to stay with them for however long he can. there is speculation that lando might replace him at ferrari (but landos contract is not up until 2025) and there is also some speculation that alex albon might replace him. while charles is clearly the golden boy at ferrari, carlos is slightly slower but also definitely consistent. he was THE ONLY non red bull driver to win a race this past year, in Singapore after max verstappedn was knocked out of qualifying by alpha tauri reserve driver liam lawson (more on him later) and because he basically came up with his own strategy in the car while he was driving.

sergio perez. aka checo. red bull driver. 33 years old. and oh boy here's where we open the can of worms. checo was previously at racing point (renamed aston martin) and it was very near the end of the 2020 (?) season and he was out of a contract. he had a bonkers race where he was knocked to the back of the grid and then overtook everyone and somehow ended up winning (there is more to that story but just trust me) and christian horner, red bull team principle, mr ginger spice and definite disney villain called him and said congrats sir you have a seat at red bull! well. fast forward. hes been causing problems. problems as in crashing a lot, generally not doing great and pissing the crap out of red bull. it is basically guaranteed at this point that he will not be getting a contract extension. there was actually talk this year of him losing his seat mid season to one of the alpha tauri drivers, because remember, red bull owns both teams and they can switch them whenever they want to (and they have!) but ultimately this did not happen. even though checo has a seat at red bull until the end of 2024, its mass speculated that he is going to get switched with an alpha tauri driver, probably daniel ricciardo (more on him shortly) mid season because there is a speculated clause in daniels contract that says that if checo isn't performing well in the first few races daniel is getting his seat.

daniel ricciardo. 34 years old. alpha tauri driver. man oh man what a guy. outside of being the prankster of the paddock, he has one of the most batshit careers of anyone currently on the grid. he started out at red bull and was showing real talent and skill and was on track to win things (and was!) and was there until the end of 2018 when max verstappen (his teammate) started getting preferential treatment and also red bull started having a lot of problems with their engines (which were being outsourced from Renault (now alpine) and another team on the grid) and well very very long story short he made the surprise move of the century and decided to sign with Renault (which makes no sense they're the one with the engine problems) and was there for 2 years before moving again to mclaren where he was reportedly not treated very well and had a hard time driving the car so they mutually ended his contract with them early and he basically retired at the end of the 2022 season and became a red bull reserve driver. then halfway through the 2023 season alpha tauri ixed one of their drivers, nyck de vries, because he wasnt doing well and promoted daniel back up to a full time driver at alpha tauri (which we know is only a step down from red bull) but then he broke his hand in a crash in zanvort (?) and then he was replaced for a few races by formula 2 driver liam lawson (who we will also talk about) and then he came back to finish out the season in alpha tauri after he was cleared. daniel has admitted openly that he never should have left red bull and he was given bad advice to do so. hes towards the end of his career at this point and its well known that he Really Really wants to finish out his career at red bull again. he and max have already been teammates before and they do work well together and daniel is great driver (see his comeback in texas (or maybe it was brazil?) this year). so. Pretty Sure that daniels going to get either an extension at alpha tauri or go up to red bull. thats what we all want. get this man in a red bull we need him there biblically.

liam lawson. now technically liam is not actually a formula 1 driver. hes a formula 2 driver, but he was daniels replacement for five races and there has been some speculation and some confirmed news about him so hes getting included. when he was racing for f1 he was at alpha tauri. hes 21 and looks like he belongs in the movie grease. no one was expecting him to slay in formula 1 and he positively knocked everyones socks off. the scene: Singapore. which, if you'll recall, is the one race that a not red bull driver won. this was largely because liam lawson slayed the absolute game in qualifying. the qualifying part of racing determines what order the cars start in on the grid for the race and theres three parts, the first two parts the bottom 5 drivers each time get knocked out and then the top 10 complete for the last 10 spots. liam lawson knocked BOTH max verstappen and checo perez out of qualifying in the second round by going very slightly faster than them, effectively fucking up red bulls race and allowing carlos to win. and he also scored points in that race, which no one was expecting. now thats all fine and dandy, but here's the speculation: hemlut marko (im pretty sure) (who is somehow decently involved in the decision making at red bull though i couldn't tell you how) said that he thinks that liam lawson will be in an f1 seat no later than 2025. meaning that he will probably get offered a contract this year. and hes already raced for alpha tauri. red bull have sunk a good amount of money into him. they clearly want him. so if he gets offered an alpha tauri seat in 2025, that means theres a good chance danny rics is going to red bull. do you SEE how the plot here is THICKENED

yuki tsunoda. age 23. currently at alpha tauri. and fun fact, the only alpha tauri driver to race there the whole year. he had three separate team mates. he is slaying and hes often slept on. he has a bit of a temper and likes to shout on the radio and also hates working out (they had to force him to move to italy or something to work out, long story) but hes been kinda killing it. he led several laps in the abu dhabi race this year and hes decently consistent. people think theres possibility that he could get moved up to red bull on account of the fact that he is younger than daniel and clearly has more years in him,, but there is also possibility that he might not because red bull like to make stupid decisions. and if he doesnt get moved up to rebel, will he stay with alpha tauri? we don't know.

alex albon. age 27. currently a williams driver. alex albon is another one with a batshit career. he started out his rookie year in 2019 at alpha tauri then got moved up to red bull halfway through the year when red bull decided that pierre gasley wasnt doing a good enough job (more on him later) and stayed with red bull for a solid year and a half until he lost his seat in 2021 to checo. he has been with williams for the last two years and is basically carrying the team. like. williams as a team scored 28 points this year. and alex albon scored 27 of those 28 points. and as we know, williams is still kind of in their shit arc (though they are doing much better. they didnt score any points for a solid 2 (?) years. so this is an improvement.) and if you can get a shit car to perform you catch the eye of bigger teams. now, alex has already been a red bull driver. and he was on the cusp of podiuming two separate times when lewis hamilton ran into him. this (among a few other things) basically killed his chances at getting resigned at red bull because he wasnt ""performing"" and red bull are bitches who love to win. but some people think that red bull should give him another shot. like daniel, hes already been max's teammate and he can definitely drive. but theres also talk he might go to ferrari because ferrari think that he might compliment charles's driving style (or something). but going to ferrari at this point is kind of suicide. so.

logan sergeant. age 23. the only american on the grid. the other williams driver. he just finished his rookie year. he scored a grand total of one single point this season, in texas, and it was because charles leclerc and lewis hamilton both got disqualified because the floor of their car had more wear (by literally less than millimeters) than it was allowed to, bumping him up from 12th to 10th. he has never done better than alex albon. he was also the very last driver to get a contract for 2024, with williams waiting until i think december of 2023 to announce his contract extension. clearly, hes on thin ice. but people have also said that he needs time to get used to formula 1 (other people have pointed out that oscar piastri slayed his rookie season this year and this statement about needing time is largely false). where logan ends up next year though will largely depend on how well the 2024 season goes for him.

fernando alonso. 42 years old. many people like to point out that oscar piastri is actually younger than fernando's racing career. he won tiktok creator of the year (somehow) and is also a 2 time world champion. he retired a few years ago, just to show back up again and slay. during the first half of the season when aston martin had a zoom zoom car he killed it, and then they had problems on top of problems and he didnt do well. except for that one race in brazil where he came in third, beating checo by literally .05 seconds. he hasn't really made any hints about retiring a second time and he is kind of carrying aston Martin right now (he scored 205 points this season, coming in 4th and tying in points with charles leclerc, lance stroll only scored 74 points this year.) and they did have their best year yet this year. (though they are relatively new).

pierre gasley. 27 years old. french. drives for alpine. the french team. previously he raced with toro rosso (now alpha tauri), then got promoted to a red bull driver in 2019, then halfway through the season they decided he wasnt doing a good enough job and he got demoted back down to alpha tauri. then he won a race with alpha tauri just to stick it to red bull. after the great oscar piastri contract twitter war, he was signed as alpines second driver, with Esteban ocon being the other driver (more on him soon). estie bestie and pierre (both french) were childhood friends and now hate each other for unknown reasons and basically feuded on the track for most of the season. french civil war at alpine. he scored 62 points in 2023 and came in 11th. not really sure where he will end up, it is possible that he will stick it out at alpine.

esteban ocon. 27 years old. also french. currently driving for alpine. another one with a silly bonkers career. he started out at force india and had a baller few seasons there but his teammate at the time was checo, and checo didnt really cooperate with him too much and caused some drama that cost estie bestie some places and some points. max verstappen also beat him up in the garage once. thats not really relevant but it did happen. anyway, after the owner of force india was arrested for .... i don't remember what maybe it was embezzlement or bankruptcy or something money related, the team was backed by lawrence stroll and became racing point. but all of that happened mid season and lawrence was basically like look ill back you guys for now but next year my son gets a seat (lance) so one of you two (checo and estie bestie) have to go. and ultimately they let estie bestie go even though he was more consistent because checo had more sponsors and they needed money. so he was out of formula 1 for a few years (but was a merc reserve driver) and then went to Renault, which then became alpine. he did come in 12th though overall this season, just behind pierre. so. will alpine keep both him and pierre and keep the civil war going? whos to say.

nico hulkenberg. 36 years old. haas driver. in his 200+ f1 races he has never been on the podium and he really really wants to be on the podium. unfortunately this will never happen in a haas because haas fucking sucks. and everyone knows it. he is getting towards the end of his career though. though! stake f1 will become the mario Andretti and audi team in 2026 (don't question it) and they have supposedly voiced interest in nico. so we will see if he hangs on that long to end up at audi. for now tough, hes definitely hating it at haas. though, haas are going to have a different team principle next year so maybe that will change things. i have a sneaky feeling through that haas will probably end up with another 2 rookie drivers because everyone else is smart enough to not race for them.

kevin magnussen. 31 years old. haas driver. hes another deeply interesting character. he has had one podium. in his rookie season. in his first race. and none since. kevin started at haas in 2017 and then left at then end of 2020 when he basically got kicked off because the team needed money and they wanted to bring in drivers with more sponsorships. these drivers were mick schumacher and nikita mazepin. so kevin basically was forced to retire after the 2020 season. this went decently well for haas. until russia invaded ukraine right before the start of the 2022 season and, well, nikita was Russian and it was never distinctly proven that his dads company (who was sponsoring the team) wasnt also funding the invasion. so nikita got fired and they were literally like 2 weeks out from the start of the season, down a driver. who are you gonna call? kevin magnussen! and hes been back ever since. but hes clearly getting annoyed with haas. there was one great clip from this year where his car caught on fire and he kind of just stared into to, clearly hoping it would burn for a long time. so the likelihood of him extending his contract is looking slim.

valtteri bottas. 34 years old. currently a driver for stake f1 (alpha romeo, kick sauber, whatever you wanna call it). previously, he was a mercedes driver and notoriously helped lewis hamilton win a great many championships, until he lost his seat to george russell in 2022. there was a rather awkward part of the 2021 season where valtteri knew that he was out of a merc seat the following year and kind of just chose violence. he slayed. then he went to alpha romeo, grew a mullet and made a calendar of his ass. quite the glow up if you ask me. hes also very interested in cycling. honestly though, i have my own personal speculation that hes going to retire at the end of this year.

zhou guanyu. 24 years old. driver for stake f1 (alpha romeo/kick sauber, etc etc). hes doing alright. he just finished his second season, in his first season he was majorly out qualified by valtteri but this past season he managed to out qualify him a good 6 times. which is decently good for the tractor of a car hes driving. its possible that he could get a contract extension, but like logan, its probably going to depend on how the 2024 season goes for him.

and thats all the drivers. theres also a few others i didnt talk about, like some other f2 drivers who want seats and mick schumacher, who is currently a merc reserve driver, all of which could be contenders for f1 seats. but one things for sure. this is going to be the silliest fucking silly season.

Now that the writers and actors strike is about to begin being felt (and as we wait for those greedy billion dollar companies who are refusing to negotiate fair pay and conditions to give up) here's 10 of my favorite (all around best) fully finished older series you should definitely check out if you haven't watched.

I mean it, these are the shows with continuously great writing and a satisfying endings that manage to actually deliver on their promises.

Hitter, Hacker, Grifter, Thief and Mastermind. Heists and cons. Stealing from the rich and giving to their victims. They provide... leverage.

Meant for anyone who enjoys bad guys being the best good guys, who will burn down the lives of evil CEOs and then gloat in the background. Very satisfying.

Hands down the best example of a found family trope I've ever seen on screen. Barring none.

2. Killjoys - (containing 5 seasons, or 50 episodes) - trailer here.

Space Bounty Hunters. Another case of found family trope. Bisexual space princess assassin. Quippy sentient ship. Green alien goo. Evil lesbians (but like... in a good way). The warrant is all.

More seriously though, it's a story about three killjoys and the bounties they go after. Initially. And then they have to save the entire Quad from some very terrifying... stuff.

Contains one of the best friendships I've ever seen on television.

3. Orphan Black - (containing 5 seasons, or 50 episodes) - trailer here.

Found family trope but with clones.

Low level grifter sees a woman who looks exactly like her kill herself and plans to take over her identity long enough to cash out. Except then there's two other women who also look exactly like her. And apparently they're all clones and someone's killing them.

Enter a global conspiracy. Human experimentation. Lots of clone shenanigans. Some serial killings. And a few murders 💖.

4. Person of Interest - (containing 5 seasons, or 103 episodes) - trailer here.

Okay I'm beginning to see how I might have a found family trope issue.

Former CIA agent gets recruited by a reclusive billionaire computer programmer who developed a... machine that can predict acts of terror before they happen. But it also predicts 'irrelevant' acts of violence that will result in someone's death.

Unless someone interferes.

I'd really like to spoil some stuff to get you all to watch this one. But I'm going to maintain self control and just mention that early on they get a dog named Bear. Bear is a very good boy. Watch it for Bear.

Also for excellent commentary on rights of privacy, government surveillance and what does 'greater good' even mean? But mostly Bear.

5. 12 Monkeys - (containing 4 seasons, or 47 episodes) - trailer here.

The very best time travel show out there. What starts out as a confusing mess of causality basically exploding, by the end of the series all makes complete and total sense.

(when that final timey-whimey loop slid into place and revealed the entire pattern it was like a choir of angels started singing in the back of my head. It was freaking glorious).

Anyway, a man from a post apocalyptic future travels into the past to stop a plague from decimating nearly the entire world population.

He has the name of the man who released the virus and it's supposed to be a single trip. One trip. One bullet. Simple. Done.

Except then things keep escalating, and escalating until time begins eating its own tail and it might start looking like the end of the world might be a better ending than erasing all of time and space from reality.

Because when our guys screw it up, they screw it up GOOD.

And oh yeah... found family.

6. The Good Place - (containing 4 seasons, or 53 episodes) - trailer here.

A self-proclaimed Arizona dirtbag opens her eyes and finds out that she's dead and got accepted in the Good Place. Except that as soon as she arrives the Good Place starts glitching, and she really, REALLY needs to become a better person before she can be found out and kicked out to the Bad Place.

Luckily her assigned soulmate was a professor of ethics and moral philosophy.

One of the funniest, most thoughtful and clever comedies I've ever watched. Ever. The characters are delightful and by the time the final minute rolled around I had sobbed my heart out multiple times (which, as we all know, is a sign of the very best comedies out there).

As for the question of whether or not this too contains Found Fami- Yes! Obviously, yes.

7. Avatar: the Last Airbender - (containing 3 seasons, or 61 episodes) - intro here (couldn't locate the trailer but it's basically the same thing in this case).

The four nations lived in harmony. Until the Fire Nation attacked.

It's been a hundred years since the beginning of the war when two kids from the Southern Water Tribe find a boy frozen in ice and wake him up. A boy who's able to bend all four elements... though not very well.

Enter multi-nation flying road trip (thank you Appa, we love you most of all) as they try to find teachers for the Avatar and save the world.

Includes found family (shut up), amazing fight scenes, the most heartfelt and vivid characters ever, and the best example of a redemption arc actually done well.

8. Love Between Fairy and Devil - (containing 1 season, or 36 episodes) - trailer here.

This one gutted me. I'm saying this as a compliment. But it had to be said. Completely destroyed me. I just haven't been the same.

A love story between an Orchid Fairy and the leader of the Moon Tribe that starts out with her accidentally releasing him from millennia long imprisonment and then takes you through the caleidoscope of all possible human emotions (it's a body-swap comedy through the first part, then a romcom, then a dramatic romantic tale, and finally a tragic love story).

But it's such a satisfying slow burn.

And it carries this... humanity through the whole thing that makes it so visceral.

If you're a romantic who's very tired of instalove and characters dropping all their morals because 'ooh, attractive person' then you've got to watch this. Because this story does NOT take the easy road there.

9. Star Wars: The Clone Wars - (containing 7 seasons, or 133 episodes) - fanmade trailer here (it was better than any of the official ones).

This series did so much. Introduced Ahsoka Tano, and made us love her. Gave names and faces and souls to the Clone Troopers (okay, it's the same face but you know what I mean), to a point where their endings during Order 66 destroyed me just as much as the ending of the Jedi Order. And somehow made me both love Anakin AND be a million times more angry with him.

There are some arcs in this series that might be a bit weaker. But there were some... god, there's a reason I love Clone Wars more than any other series or trilogy in this universe. And I'm not even a little ashamed to say it.

Must watch for Disaster Lineage shenanigans; for the vod'e; AND for the Jedi (who did their best okay? They always did their best 😭💔).

(and on the subject of found family... do I even need to comment)

10. Nikita - (containing 4 seasons, or 73 episodes) - trailer here.

A rogue assassin that escaped Division - covert government agency that takes recruits out of prison, fakes their deaths and then forces them to become spies and assassins - has come back to take it down. Brick by brick if she has to. With guns and explosives too when that works better.

Contains soooo many cool fight scenes. Is full of incredible characters you'll fall in love with (and hate with) very quickly. And most of all has an incredibly complex relationship of mentorship and friendship between two women that holds both great admiration and betrayal, real care and love as well as rage and hatred, forgiveness, mutual respect and an unbreakable kind of bond that so very rarely involves even one female character on TV, let alone two.

(as usual, found family tropes up the wazzoo).

In conclusion. We all know there's going to be a large space between seasons of our favorite shows now (and some shows that aren't going to survive it). Let's fill that space with some excellent TV we haven't had a chance to see yet.

And direct the blame for the wait towards the right place (i.e. the studios).

Its small but it really speaks volume about all the shit he's had to put up with and this was his last straw

OOO YES thank you for submitting this cause you're absolutely right that his face shifted in a way that made it clear that this was the final straw.

Major Transformers: Prime and Predacons Rising spoilers. Read at your own peril.

In my opinion I honestly think that Knockout wasn't planning to knock out (heh) Starscream the way he did until Starscream told him to shut up. Based on his facial expressions I think it was a slap to the face realization moment.

His face shifts from shock/dismay at Starscream telling him to shut up, to this expression of realization.

I think it's largely bc Starscream was basically the last thing in the Decepticons that could have made him stay. Whether or not someone interprets that as friendship or Knockout being hopeful that things would be different if Starscream led is up to the viewer. I think it's a mix of both tbh. I don't know if they'd be considered full on friends but as far as we could see on screen Starscream was the last friendly face that Knockout had connection to in the Decepticons.

It also hurts a bit. Considering TfP sometimes had good theming but often had messages and themes that, in my opinion, weren't explored as well as they could have been or just weren't explored further I'm unsure if this next parallel was intentional or not. But Starscream's "Shut up you!" was said after Knockout said something kinda cheesy/punny in the evil way he does. The thing is? He used to say the cheesiest shit with Breakdown. And every time one of them started a punny line or something? The other would add to it.

In a way this moment was kind of a contrast between the two relationships. Breakdown matched his energy. I don't think Breakdown got enough screentime nor did the dynamic between Knockout and Breakdown get explored as much as it could have been but you can still get a good read on their bond. And comparing Breakdown's relationship with KO vs Starscream's it's easy to see how one lifts each other up and the other is well... rocky.

So Starscream telling him to shut up made him realize the distinct difference from his relationship with Breakdown. It basically told Knockout Imo that Starscream didn't like or care about him the way a companion should. And with that realization came the realization that he really had nothing left with the Decepticons. Not even the last person he had a semi-positive relationship with actually cared about him.

Some people think Knockout's defection was just shoved in willy nilly but, in my opinion, as far as side switching goes, Knockout is honestly the only Decepticon that I think made sense even if it was rushed. I know some people say it was badly done which, totally fair. Though I would have loved to see more buildup and a sort of, episode to remind viewers how shitty he was treated so his defection felt more natural plus more bonding with Breakdown to give us a better sense that they were close, Knockout's defection honestly? Made sense if you thought about it.

Enough shitty stuff happened to him bc of being in the Decepticons, add to the fact that with Breakdown gone he was now entirely alone to warrant a side change. And from the get go he never seemed particularly loyal to the Decepticons as a whole. I've said it before and I'll say it again, Knockout joined the Decepticons for the ✨ aesthetic ✨/hj. He's already shown a tendency to enjoy roaming and doing his own thing. So him ditching when there's nothing left worth staying for? Very in character I think.

I wish it got more attention than just a brief plot point in Predacons Rising but like, TfP had been cancelled so I kinda get it.

HAMMY'S POSTING. BACK AT IT AGAIN WITH MY FRIEND'S ART!! This time based on a little tidbit I dropped on @stcries at one point, hehe. Yes, Cola, your Tenna WILL be mentioned EVEN before his RP debut, teehee. It's been close to a couple of weeks since Chapter 3's release so I wanna talk about the crossover AU version!! Obviously, I will mention some DELTARUNE CHAPTER 3 SPOILERS here, so check the read more under your own discretion!

In this AU, Tenna would not only absent himself several times during the The Legend of Tenna segments because of Toriel. He would also be informed of "two sudden guests" wrecking havoc all around set, terrorizing countless employees and sabotaging particular sets and the like. And, upon making it to the Green Room, he would find Skid and Pump trying to press a poor Zapper's buttons as if he were an elevator. Cue the exchange above which, from the Fun Gang's POV, would happen off-screen. They really are not supposed to be there and it shows!!

Before anyone asks: which door is Skid talking about here? Well, let us just say that Kris leaving the Dreemurrs' household door open would not only have resulted in Undyne coming in during the tail end of the chapter.

In comparison of Chapter 1.5 (which I still have to write, I know, shshshsh), the boys' appearance in Chapter 3 is pretty light in terms of plot-involvement. And also pretty lighthearted! In a similar vein to Lancer, they keep appearing here and here during the chapter's events, usually just to mess around. Tenna does not even make the attempt to give them jobs-- he is NOT dealing with any child labor laws.

Sans actively interrupting the boards and physical challenges, breaking into the S-Rank room, or harassing the Zapper guarding the Cold Place's door, the kids are granted full freedom around the TV World. Not because they have done anything to warrant it, Tenna just canNOT successfully trap them inside gachapon capsules. They can even enter the A-Rank and lower rooms because, well, who is going to stop them really? Susie would smuggle them in* anyways.

*She would actually do this upon letting Kris use the B-Rank Room's Ball Machine as intended and realizing that they WASTED a bunch of points on prizes she found to be lame. No, alas, Ralsei does not get to give his two cents on the ethics of shoving two single-digit-aged children into a gigantic gachapon machine for the sake of getting prizes for free. Like, even Lancer is a prize in there, that machine would be emptied in MINUTES.

A running gag all throughout this chapter would be, in Tenna's own words as he looks at the camera looking cheeky: "if it's not tied down, it can be stolen, simple as that" (thanks Cola hehe). Random bits and pieces of each set, ITEM chests, even bits from the boards and physical challenges themselves, somehow, would start vanishing at one point. Especially the gachapon capsules-- Tenna would trap the Fun Gang inside THE LAST THREE CAPSULES HE HAS LEFT just so they would play the Bonus Round with him. And, wanna guess what would happen once they build enough TP to use the TURNOFF act on the Zapper? THE CAPSULES WOULD BE GONE TOO!! THESE TWO WOULD HAVE STOLEN THE PARTY AS WELL!! All because Pump likes smashing the things open with his hammer!!

And so, they would become pretty useful as means to obtain ITEMs and EQUIPment the player might not have picked up during their adventure. Just trade some points, or other ITEMs, with them and no problem. So like a shop with a random bunch of stuff in it. It is pretty difficult to let two kids roam around a TV studio with so many bright and colorful things within their grasp. You could even get two extra controllers from them (just like the ones you can get from Lancer), though using them in the SNES puzzles would not be too different from using Ralsei's or Susie's controllers respectively. You get to play as 8-bit versions of the little guys though!

Once the Fun Gang is on its way to the Cold Place the second time to face Tenna, they will come across Skid and Pump one last time... trying to drag Lancer's petrified body* across the Green Room in hopes of getting Susie to do something about it. Not like she can. They were not present for Chapter 2 so they must have been pretty confused when they discovered their Darkner friend as a statue. This, funny enough, would come into play during Tenna's boss fight when Susie comes up with a new ACT: DROPLANCER. Basically, for a sizable amount of TP, she can command Skid and Pump (who will magically spawn above the TV set) to drop Lancer on Tenna's head to stun him and make a minigame last for longer, earning the party more points. And it should do damage to him but, because it is funny, it does not. It probably pisses him off and causes his attacks to do more damage the turn after, though.

All of this is because Tenna did not have a horror set ready, by the way. They become a massive pain in the neck ON PURPOSE, and everything they end up gather was likely destined to a horror set OF THEIR OWN MAKING. The Susiezilla set was cool, at least, at least they had SOMETHING MILDLY SPOOKY in the TV World. At least they could have fun doing their own thing throughout most of it. Like, these kids canonically LOVE watching TV! Tenna should have given them a bone at least!!

As to how Chapter 3 ends? Much like how Kevin got stabbed by the Happy Fella in SM4, they arrive to the aftermath. Susie and Kris are missing, Ralsei is not looking so hot, and their teacher Toriel was there all along?? And she is not waking up?? They even end up finding Tenna after he got torn into pieces before the party could, which is NOT good. They do not even get a full explanation of what happened because, well, they are little kids. They would not have understood it. Neither they should know about The Roaring Knight. They are VERY dangerous.

Looking at the bright side, the boys would be able to aid Susie, the Pippins and the Shadowguys with fixing Tenna. After all, they found him first! They even had a lot of fun on set, so it would be the least they could do for the man running the entire operation. And Pump is very knowledgeable about The Art of Fixing a TV Screen with a Hammer* and its varying degrees of effectiveness. Which totally did not freak Susie out the first time he did that. He wields a HUGE hammer, y'know?

*This practically involves hitting a TV screen's frame with a hammer, which can fix how the screen displays images. It does not fix A CRACKED SCREEN, but as a bandaid fix just to get Tenna's face back it would work.

After the events of Chapter 3, in Castle Town, the player might be able to trigger a particular interaction where Skid and Pump try to convince Tenna of doing something horror-related in the future. They would even have their own little pitch! It would probably involve Jack from Chapter 4 lmao. Those two are very, VERY persistent.

They were never married, and my mother, having maybe seen the writing on the wall long before I ever thought to look for it, gave me her surname. She plays a larger role in this story than you might imagine: for one, she’s responsible for any of the good in the person I became. For another, she is one of few reasons that I survived the fallout of everything that would happen to me a few decades on. And in 1968, when my father woke up one lonely morning and decided it was time to skip town, she chose to never shy away from the task of being a single mother.

There is much more to be said about the years between then and somewhere in 1979, when I changed my name- although not yet legally- to Alexander Dean Prescott. Alex, because I liked it. Dean, because it was my paternal grandfather’s name. I’m not sure what I was thinking, then, I had no contact with that half of my family, but maybe it was part of a rebellious streak. A way to reclaim them, to blame them for slipping out of my life. We’ll circle back around to all of this later, once I’ve gotten your attention with the good stuff.

In 1980, two years after I graduated high school, I got my first job working in journalism. I started as an intern and moved my way all the way up until I was a regular contributor to the daily paper. Much as now, my beat was crime, and I wrote often about local arrest warrants, minor arrests, break-ins, stuff no one really cares about unless they’re involved somehow. Occasionally, I got to write about murder. Or missing persons cases. Or the stories where we just weren’t sure what had occurred. When I could, I deviated from my assigned set of stories and would pitch something to the head editor. Sometimes, she’d let me run away with it.

I loved doing interviews, spotlighting people who’d been affected by or had committed a crime, and I got fairly good at writing about them. By the time 1989 came around, I had a slightly longer leash and the ability to spend some of my time pursuing the stories that truly caught my interest. But there wasn’t much to set my sights on, locally. A couple of the big ideas I had fell through and nothing else seemed to come calling. I hit something of a slump. I felt disillusioned with my field, I didn’t think writing a story could make any sort of difference in the world, and a shitty five month relationship with one of my coworkers was still biting me in the ass. That version of me living in 1989 wanted to run away, he just didn’t know it yet.

This is when Jack found me.

I have never been so excited to receive an ask in my life. Buckle up, this one’s gonna be a long one.

So; Sonic Boom New Horizons is an au that takes the setting of Sonic Boom and some semblance of the main characters backstories, the mainline games, and aspects of the Archie and IDW comics and blends them together into an au that is secretly about trauma management LMAO. There are two protagonists: Sonic and Silver (“Slipper”, as he goes by in the story). Every ‘arc’, the main character swaps off.

The story picks up with Sonic 06, with Sonic as the focus character. He, Amy, and Tails have saved just enough money to afford their dream trip to Soleanna for their Festival of the Sun, and so just that! 06 more or less follows a similar format as it does in the game, with quality of life improvements and inconsistencies played for a gag, like in the show. There’s only really one major difference: Slipper and Blaze.

See, Slipper is from the future, but the future isn’t actually under attack by Iblis. Iblis is in the Sol Dimension, because Solaris is an inter dimensional god and the barrier between the Sol Dimension and Sonic’s dimension is really thin in Soleanna. The Sonic Rush games don’t actually happen, so it’s the first time that Blaze and Sonic meet, and of course, Slipper too.

So, why is there a Silver there to begin with? Well, he too is an orphaned hedgehog of ambiguous origins, but in his future, he’s a lot less lucky. Because of the weird markings that appear on his body as he ages (in response to psychological distress, making his ability to get stronger a sort of self defense), he was pretty severely bullied and his trust in other people shattered. Mephiles finds him and realizes he’s the perfect candidate to manipulate to kill Sonic, because he’s DESPERATE to escape his life. And so, Meph facilitates a deal between him and Blaze that if Slipper helps get rid of Iblis, she’ll let him stay in her dimension.

Slipper’s lore is really long and would warrant its own post (since he’s the secondary protagonist and all that), so I’ll skip a great deal of the details for now and move on. By the time the timeline is overwritten, Shadow, Sonic, Slipper, and Elise are the only people who remember the events of the previous timeline, and Sonic decides that he can’t go back to Seaside Island anymore. He tries to pretend it’s because Eggman’s ploys are going international and planetary and Seaside Island is too isolated.

But, in reality (and the reason Amy and Tails agree pretty much on the spot to leave and never look back) it’s because the village people treat Sonic and the crew like they’re gods, but nothing they ever do is good enough. They only care about the five of them because they protect the island and only care that they’re acting as an unit, and not for them as people. Knuckles remains on Angle Island (which is anchored above Seaside Island), and Sticks stays behind, but the rest of them begin their new lives as the heroes of the world, and not just of their thankless island.

So, from there it follows the games plots with original stuff here and there to help develop their characters, with the Boom humor turned down a little to mostly just dramatic irony and Teenagers Being Teenagers ™. Because this story is one that’s supposed to sort of bait and switch. You come for the silly Sonic Boom 06 adaptation, you stay for the exploration of childhood trauma and how to heal from it from the rest of the story.

I will mention, just briefly, that Sonic and Slipper are somewhat romantically involved? I almost hesitate to call it that, but by the time frame between Colors and Generations, their relationship is certainly. Hurtling towards something. They work really well as protagonists and as partners. Sonic is pretty much the first person that he ever trusts again, and Slipper stands up for Sonic and refuses to let people walk all over him during the Return to Seaside Island mini arc. Actually allow me to elaborate rq.

So RTSI takes places between Free Riders and Colors, where Sticks calls them back to the Island to solve a mystery and Sonic invites Slipper, Shadow, Rouge, and Omega for a little “beach episode”. This little arc especially shows the way that the five are treated by the island folk, and Slipper is the first to piece together what exactly is happening and what they’re trying to hide and pretend is normal.

They flinch when people raise their voices at them. They apologize a lot. And a whole lot of weird shit that doesn’t happen when they’re not on the island. Slipper picks up on it first because he sees what’s happening as shit that happened to *him*. There’s a specific scene where Sonic is being privately chewed out by the mayor for something and Slipper just snaps, refusing to let Sonic let himself get stepped on because he’s afraid to speak up. It’s a really good moment both for Slipper (refusing to let what happened to him ever happen to anyone he cares about) and Sonic (finding his voice again, even in front of his abusers). And if you think “oh that’s not in character” just trust me. It 100% is, for this timeline’s Sonic.

That’s the funny thing about trauma. It makes you act in ways that are self contradictory or don’t make sense.

OKAY moving on to Knuckles. There’s no smooth way to transition this so I’ll just go ahead and start here. Knuckles is the last echidna of Angle Island and all that, much more closely aligned with his game counterpart than Sonic Boom, just because I wanted it to be.

Knuckles has two “imaginary” friends, Tikal and Chaos, and no one believes that he can see them until the events of Sonic Adventure LMAO. They are tied to the ME, and stick around after SA too. Sonic feels dumb for accusing Knuckles of being too old for Imaginary Friends now lmao.

He’s not really on the best terms with his downstairs neighbors, but whatever. He and Sticks tag team when they need help while the other 3 are gone, and only really gets involved when dragged into things (in the games). There’s just something so somber and sad about being the last of your kind accompanied by two ghosts on an island that floats with an all powerful gemstone that Sonic’s rival’s best friend keeps trying to steal. Would he like to be with the three off on adventures? Probably. But this is his duty. His lonely, lonely duty.

Yeaaaaah Maybe?? I WAS about to say that the side stories all fit the theme of being backstories. but then I remembered there's a Christmas arc that's thrown in there in the middle like it's got any business existing in that format.

I do like this idea. I just didn't have any room set up for it, and I don't think it'd be enough to warrant a full side story honestly. Like, it's really just

My idea was to have every chapter have some form of interactivity, with it honestly getting a lil more ambitious each time.

(chapter 1: choose if Frisk texts Toriel or not. 24-hour poll. Chapter 2: Warship board game, which was a Twitch stream. Chapter 3: a boss battle you can play. Chapter 4: ???? Chapter 5: The Whole Chapter Is a Game.)

but the problem with making an isolated experience that's intended for gameplay is that... it's isolated. I can't have it involved with the actual plot of the chapter cause player choice would drastically change the shape of the chapter and I am not, obviously, making 2 versions of the comic to account for this. So keeping it isolated is necessary. But then it's hard to justify it in a complex plot.

I mean. I guess. MAYBE it could work where the comic happens, it sets up the gaster stuff, we get the game, and boom, it's not touched again for the rest of the chapter. you're in, you do the thing, you're out.

For the sake of the Darkworld arc existing (and like, I have to make it Darkworld, cause logically how else are they going to have such a big adventure post-pacifist? AND make it have the very specific plot development I want with living symbolism characters that I adore doing) I need to do that chapter. It's like, the literal midpoint of the story that drives Chara to cut out Asriel. The plot doesn't work without it, Chara needs that character development. And, it helps justify their goat form after the fact.

I really hope you don’t take offense to this question, it’s just that i’ve seen a lot of AUs that are so far removed from the original canon material that I wasn’t even able to tell that I was looking at fan content until I read the tags or someone else pointed it out. Likewise, i’ve seen OCs that happen to share completely unrelated or coincidental similarities with fictional characters/real people. I am just asking because it can be hard to tell sometimes.

3. can you share the name and pronouns of the (i assume) main character? I’ve been calling them ‘white guy’ or just ‘white’ in my head lol.

4. is the story about reincarnation or multiverse stuff? Again, feel free not to answer, but the blurred yellow text seemed to me like the last thing that was said to the main character before they died/reincarnated/their consciousness transferred to another vessel. Oh hey, if I'm taking a breather from grading rn anyways. Need some NSFW idea airing about transition stuff, so uh. NSFW medical talks here. Don't be weird about it.

So... I do have a decent amount of bottom dysphoria. I also have difficulty tucking that I hate (also a lot of personal shit with bulge and all my stuff down there so.... yeah).

Vaginoplasty is probably something I want someday, but.... with the cost, and the time of recovery, and me being a grad student, and the potential of complication.... yeah, its not happening anytime soon. Its just not realistic in the next 5 years, and I hate that.

Also, I joke about not wanting to sacrifice the utility of standing to pee, but that's only half a joke- its really goddamn convenient while hiking and camping.

So I'm kinda considering orchi. Problem is, I don't need the main effect of orchi, which is removing T production entirely. At least, I don't think I do- my T suppressed easily when I started HRT, but my E has struggled to stay up since then. I have some concern about whether its sufficient to suppress T long term, especially at the end of my injection cycle, but its not enough to warrant orchi on its own.

But I do think it'll reduce bottom dysphoria. Its certainly something to consider. I recently read this an article that pretty much confirmed a lot of my feelings on the matter, and idk, I think I might wanna explore the possibility a bit further.

the way u put it abt kevin dying alone just like a rat in the gutter and ben waking up and looking for him… GOD kill me thats SOOOO good n emotional ARGH, im having so much trouble imagining how gwen would react bc like… she has NEVER gotten that close to a situation like that, like ben has gotten pretty close. hes killed ppl before (even if cannon never mentions it :/ ) and been killed, and hes left ppl for dead and been left for dead, and whether the show acknowledges it or not hes pretty well versed in this stuff, we can guess how he would act pretty easily, but gwen…. gwen to me kind of seems to live in a tower to speak, shes been around dangerous and in danger and been threatened and seen her loved ones get hurt many times , but she also seems to have lived a relatively sheltered life, whether by the way she was raised or by her own anodite heritage just. making her mind somewhat different from humans, something more free and less easy to be hurt, so then if u have her kill somebody COMPLETELY ON ACCIDENT while simultaneously being COMPLETELY AT FAULT, (and yes in canon i think shes also killed ppl but she never rly had any reaction to it), man… how would she react? to killing one of her only friends? to killing her boyfriend?, ben starts yelling at her and does she freeze or does she argue or does she break down?, i think she doesnt face any "official" consequences - like u said i think its swept under the rug, i think at BEST ben petitions to have her put on trial but its a closed trial in plumber court, no cameras and handpicked jury, rook at least seems to be friendly with kevin tho that was at the car show and friedkin, and max… well. max has signed many a death warrant, he was the one that both opened the null void portal for kevin and he barely reacted when phil was thrown into the void in os, if his granddaughter killed somebody well…, frankly even tho max acted hospitable to kevin in uaf it never seemed that he particularly cared for him to me, he acted like an adult should meaning he was hospitable and welcoming, but there wasnt any genuine attempt to reach out or anything, so i think while he might think it sad that kevin died and might think his manner of death particularly gruesome, his first and only thought is about gwen and ben (and also how to not let this get out), and then… would kevins mom (i never count harvey since it seems he and her are long divorced and i accept kevins retelling of his past as truth and not harveys), but anyway would kevins mom even BE told?, certainly not by the plumbers whom quite frankly we KNOW did nothing for her after devins death, at least not anything substantial - they dont keep tabs on her and kevin, which is why max didnt know kevin or his whereabouts, and she seemed completely forgotten about after devin died, so i think she would just be left in the dark again. it would have to be ben who tells her, and i say that bc i genuinely do not believe that gwen would have the guts to face her ,

forgot to mention but i think even if gwen were put on trial for it, and even if she completely admitted guilt, i dont think she would get in trouble for it. or, if she did, it would be like lowest possible security plumber jail lmfao. it would be declared a tragic accident that she had no way of knowing would happen and that would be it. it wouldnt even mar her record, or if it did it wouldnt affect any of her prospects in the future and would be completely hidden from all official public records. max is powerful enough for that lol

oh - my agenda was like... an anti-shipping agenda actually? lmfao. basically, i dont think gwen and kevin should be together, and gwen killing kevin would only further that lmfao, especially if it was, say, subconsciously done - she was mad at him, she shoved him out the ship "as a joke", causing his gruesome death... well, you might see how that furthers my agenda lol. but no, i think gwen and kevin were an awful ship, even in cannon - gwen often ignores and disregards his thoughts and feelings, constantly seems to not think about how his past might have affected him and the way he thinks and acts in the present, and seems to enjoy, well... hitting him. or, at least, getting physical with him. kevin, for his part, isnt as bad, but he refuses to open up and he is a very poor communicator and allows gwen to walk all over him. all of my points have cannon basis, but i, personally, am very bad at formatting my thoughts and writing them out, and that, combined with the way that fans of gwevin often come for my head when i so much as suggest they might be better with other people, has sort of dampened my desire to create a post about it lol. this opinion might come as a surprise since i do on occasion rb gwevin art, but its for the art and not the ship lol.

I don't have the emotional fortitude to write it, but the brain does sometimes mosey over to the potential aftermath of simple shit like 'the Omnitrix is programmed to prevent its wielder from dying', 'Ben is known to occasionally get the wrong alien', and 'falling from great heights is very bad for your health' coming together after Gwen shoves the boys out of the ship during Showdown to result in one dead Kevin.

Like damn but that could be one dramatic and painful storyline.

Amethio in HZ006 had interesting stuff to ponder about so it warrants its own post. Taking episode notes and character notes for future reference!

I’m glad that Amethio being removed the mission to retrieve the pendant happened early in the series. I figured this would happen eventually (given his failures to get the pendant), but I didn’t expect it to happen now. As I see it, it’s going to lead to some interesting development for Amethio sooner rather than later.

Some interesting things to note:

- Spinel pointed out that it’s not like Amethio to fail a mission. I feel like this implies that Amethio has been on missions before and that he usually fulfills his duty? This is just speculation but I wonder if he is the type to try and gather as much info as possible on a target before making his move, as he knew that Liko got her pendant from her grandmother for example. Was he told that by Gibeon or did he track down information about the heirloom by himself?

- There seems to be several other members in the organization. Spinel and the others didn’t seem to be there in person but were probably summoned for Amethio’s report. Spinel seems to know a bit about Amethio and can push his buttons in order to get a rise out of him (he seems to do it on purpose, meanwhile Friede has a similar effect on Amethio but doesn’t do it on purpose). Spinel will be the one going after Liko and her pendant now, and I wonder if he’ll be much more drastic in his methods and less honorable as a contrast to Amethio who doesn’t like the idea of taking hostages and usually tries to avoid involving others in his mission. I really can’t wait to see what Spinel has in store. 

- Zir and Conia don’t seem to be high enough in the hierarchy to attend the reports with Gibeon. They seem to stick with Amethio because of a personal attachment to him specifically, not because they are ordered to? 

- I wonder what’s the deal with The Explorers? Does Gibeon seek rare items? How did he recruit people into his team? The way he easily removed Amethio from the mission also gives me a feeling that he may see members as quite disposable. 

- I absolutely love Amethio’s VA and the way he delivers his lines. His “huh?” when Gibeon told him he was removed from the mission sounded raw and vulnerable. Even the way he sounded when he was reporting to him was different than the way Amethio sounds usually, it was much more open, unsure, and innocent in a way. When Amethio talks to Spinnel and when he leaves the scene afterwards, he sounds different (harsher, more direct). I like when characters sound different depending on who they’re talking to, and the way VAs bring nuances to these scenes!

- Amethio is frustrated at being removed from the mission. I do definitely think that he seems to be the type to want acknowledgment and doesn’t like being underestimated (which has been a pattern for a while, as shown with his interactions with Friede and now Spinel). I think he wants to get approval from Gibeon (as to why remains to be seen) and wants to be useful? Perhaps The Explorers is the only place he has and he feels like he needs to complete his missions in order to remain there? He is very dedicated and professional and seems willing to take full responsability for acting alone. Even though he is frustrated, he doesn’t seem to blame Zir and Conia either, which I like (and he prioritized everyone’s safety above the mission by fleeing the scene after Rayquaza appeared). He’ll obey orders, but he also made the decision to act on his own accord by chasing Rayquaza. He wants to understand the mystery behind Liko’s pendant (and he also left before he saw Rayquaza fleeing after seeing her!). Out of personal interest or because he wants to solve the mystery so he can be the one bringing answers to Gibeon? I am also curious how Amethio will chase Rayquaza as he has no way to track the Rising Volt Tacklers now (who could have potentially led him to it since Roy has the Ancient Pokeball) and officially, he is not on the pendant mission anymore. 

- This is just speculation now, but since Amethio seems to be the type to have issues regarding being acknowledged and getting approval, I wonder if it’s due to filial piety? So far, it doesn’t exactly strike me that way (it doesn’t feel like he is related to Gibeon) so I am curious to learn more about him soon. Perhaps Amethio owes Gibeon and feels like he needs to repay him? I feel like Amethio could have a few elements of Bede’s story (from SwSh, Bede was an orphan and wanted to get Rose’s approval, I’m thinking about these specific parts of the game). All I know is that it’s totally my type of character w 

- As of episode 6, I find it interesting that Amethio has narrative threads linking him back to Liko, Roy, and Friede. Despite being removed from the mission, the threads are there and I wonder how they’ll come into play in the future. 

For Liko, Amethio was the first “plot relevant” character that she met in the first episode. Not anyone else, but him. First meetings in stories aren’t random. Moreover, Amethio was the first character in universe to bring up the idea that the pendant has something mysterious to it (which in turn makes the viewer question things as well), and he was the character that triggered the event that showcased the pendant’s power twice now (Soulblades’ move in the first episode missed Lizardon and went to Liko’s direction, which allowed the pendant to activate its protection power and in HZ006, the pendant activated again). Meta wise, the poster of the anime only showcases four characters: Liko, Roy, Friede and Amethio (and Amethio is the only character who isn’t part of the main crew on that poster, so it does feel like we’ll have mysteries about him and Friede specifically, outside of Liko and Roy’s stories). Amethio was placed in Liko’s side in the poster, looking back in her direction which to me indicates that there will be something to their dynamics, even though Amethio isn’t on the pendant mission anymore now. Horie Shun (Amethio’s VA) also mentioned to look forward to what kind of relationships he’ll have with Liko and the others, so there should be intriguing stuff later!

For Roy: Roy decided that he wanted to chase Rayquaza and find it. Amethio has also made the decision to go after Rayquaza so this is now a goal they share. 

For Friede: the opening showcases them battling together (and it’s the only time Amethio appears in the opening) and they’ve built a kind of rivalry. While they didn’t conclude any of their battles, the fact that they battled at all is interesting (battles can be a way to communicate for trainers and get to know each other better after all). Amethio spoke highly of Friede as an opponent and Friede manages to get under Amethio’s skin in particular ways. I feel like through their battles, Friede got a sense of what kind of person Amethio is. Perhaps he’ll be surprised if Spinel and the others are much more dangerous in their approaches compared to Amethio. Either way, they both acknowledge each other as opponents. 

I’m looking forward to how all these connections come into play later, but they set up the ground nicely so far. 

(As an aside, I find the comparisons between Amethio and Precure in JPN fandom funny since I like both shows as well. “If this were Precure, this [being removed from the mission] would be a sign that he is going to become a friend” is personally what I am expecting as a development. Characters who start out in the bad guy side but then change and become allies of some sort, just like in my magical girls? I like! I don’t really feel like Amethio is meant to remain in The Explorers, and him being removed from the mission so early is definitely going to help explore his character.)

What is your writing advice for young people who want to write fanfiction and original stories in the near future?

If this is just Way Too Much, skip to the end (#16). My most important piece of advice is there. I also happen to think #5 is pretty good.

1) Literally just write. Write whatever you want, and do a lot of it.

2) You don’t have to post everything. In fact you don’t have to post anything. You can, don’t get me wrong, but it can be intimidating to sit down and think “I will now write something that other people will see and read and judge with their eyeballs.” Because that’s probably gonna lead to nerves and writer's block. Just write down the ideas that you have, the things you want to write, whatever’s in your brain that you want to explore and expand upon and make into something. And then if you want to, share it. Or don’t share it. I have plenty of half-baked ideas and documents and random story chapters and shit hidden away on my Google Drive that will never see the light of day, for a whole number of reasons. I wanted to write it but it wasn’t ~Spicy~ enough to warrant posting, or it’s only like an eighth of a good idea, or it’s like one scene with no story around it, or it’s just something incredibly self-indulgent I just wanted to write for my own enjoyment.

Point being, don’t write for other people. Don’t write so that other people can read it; write what you want, write for yourself, and then if you want to share it, do.

3) You can pretty much ignore any and all of these for fanfiction. In fact, you can ignore pretty much any rules or guidelines you want for fanfiction. Fanfic is a sandbox. You don’t have to be a “professional writer” to post fic. No one expects you to be Stephen King or Margaret Atwood. Fanfic is just for playing in a fandom and having fun. If you wanna write a 50 chapter slow burn with very little plot aside from the OTP slowly getting to know each other, and no real stakes or central conflict, I guarantee people would read that. Really, fanfiction is the Old West of writing: lawless, wild, unpredictable, and free.

However, here are the rules you must follow:

-Separate your paragraphs. (I’m sure you know this already, but I’m gonna say it anyway just in case.) Do not post one big block of text. Make a paragraph break when someone new is talking, when the characters are in a new place, when a new event occurs that changes the scene, when a chunk of time has passed, and when there’s a major change in subject.

-I know it’s obvious, but... grammar, punctuation, and capitalization. They exist to make writing easy for readers to read, and more people will read your stuff if they don’t have to stop and try to figure out what you meant.

-Use tags and labels, as is possible with whatever site you’re using. Especially if you include possibly triggering content in your story. Again, I know it’s obvious, but it’s common courtesy. Bonus: tagging the themes and content of your story helps readers find it and read it :)

-If possible, limit the use of all-caps and exclamation marks / question marks. 99% of the time, one ! or one ? will do. If you overload the page with a lot of all-caps and long rows of exclamation marks or question marks, it hampers readability.

... That’s literally all I can think of. And, like I said, it’s all pretty basic stuff. You were probably rolling your eyes like, “Uh, yeah, Gwen, I know.” But that’s literally it. You can pretty much do whatever you want in fanfic.

That being said, here’s my advice for both fanfiction and original work...

4) A quick and dirty rule for coming up with a plot, starting a story, keeping up pacing, or maintaining tension: figure out what dreams, desires, and goals are nearest and dearest to your main character’s heart (see #16). Then set up the main conflict to be directly in opposition to that goal. It doesn’t have to be in a tangible way, though it could be. But, if your main character wants more than anything to reach the ships on the southern coast of your world and sail to a new life, make sure the main conflict immediately prevents them from doing that - in fact, make sure to send them north. If your main character just wants to keep their loved ones safe, kidnap the loved ones. If your main character just wants to date their best-friend-turned-crush, make sure they think they have no chance - or, make them cocky about it, and make sure it makes Person B determined not to ever like them. You get it. Figure out what your character most wants, and then keep them from having that. Boom - your conflict now ties in with your character's motivation. It's like instant yeast for plots.

5) If you’re anything like me, you want your first draft to be Good, despite all that advice about how the first draft doesn’t have to be good and it’s just to get words on the page, yadda yadda. And if you’re somewhat of a perfectionist (like myself), it’s easy to get stuck looking at a blank page because you don’t have The Perfect Words, and you want what you write to be Good the first time.

Here’s how I cheat that:

Instead of trying to write a Good First Draft from a blank page, hit the enter key a few times, skip a little down on the page, change your ink to red (or blue, or whatever - just something immediately identifiable as Not Black) and just thought vomit. Write whatever the hell you’re thinking, exactly as you think it. Don’t worry about it being readable, don’t worry about narrative flow for now, don’t worry about covering all the details, don’t worry about anything except either a) getting all the details of your idea out onto the page, whether that’s a lot or whether it’s just a sentence or two, or b) if you don’t have an idea yet, finding your way there.

Because this method is also very good for finding your way to ideas when you’re stuck in writer’s block.

Because of how human brains work, getting this stuff out onto the page - in all its messy, stream-of-consciousness glory - will likely spark more thoughts. As you write your original idea about the scene, it’ll likely spark more ideas. Creation begets creation. If you just start thought-vomiting your ideas onto the page, chances are you’ll think of more things as you go, and you’ll start filling out description or dialogue or tone or action or whatever, and pretty soon the scene starts writing itself.

Not sure where you’re going with the scene or which ideas you wanna use? Use a lot of ambivalent language in your “thought-vomit draft.” My pre-writing notes are chock-full of the words “maybe,” “perhaps,” and the phrases, “At some point...” and “...or something like that.” In this way, I don’t tie myself down to one idea; it’s just an idea, and I’m keeping it on the page in case I use it, but I might chuck it in the trash or change it or whatever.

And then, once your ideas for the scene (or story, or chapter, or whatever) are on the page, then go back to the top and start translating them into a “real” first draft. Use black ink, and start copy-pasting chunks of the thought-vomit up into the top part of the document and translating them into Draft 1. Separate out paragraphs where paragraph breaks should be. Add the correct punctuation and whatnot. Change “describe the lobby here - include potted plants, fancy carpet, blood stain, etc.” into an actual description of the lobby. Flesh it out, or condense, or whatever it needs. And if you’re still stuck, change back to red ink and ramble some more until you find a path that feels right, then plug that in. This keeps you from looking at a blank page, and it allows you to generate a kind of Draft 0.5, somewhere between a plan and a first draft.

You don’t have to use every idea. Like I said, jot down whatever comes to mind, put a “maybe” before or after it, and keep working. If the idea grabs you and you wanna keep expanding on it and exploring it, cool. If you just wanna jot it down so you don’t forget it and then move on, also cool. Red-ink draft / “thought-vomit draft” is your time to jump around in the timeline, add or finesse details at whatever point your brain moves to, etc. Don’t try to do it exactly in story order, because you will get tangential thoughts and ideas, and you will not remember to write them down five pages later when you finally get to taking notes on that scene. Trust me. On that note...

6) Write everything down the moment you think of it. Seriously.

“I’ll remember it when I get around to writing that scene in a couple days / weeks / months (/years).”

You won’t.

Write it down.

Phone, journal, google docs - hell, my family regularly laughs at me for grabbing a napkin during dinner and scribbling thoughts down alongside pasta sauce stains.

And then, once you have it written down somewhere...

7) Consolidate your writing ideas in one place.

Maybe this isn’t really your style, and that’s totally chill.

Buuuut, if you’re Type-A like me - or if you tend to be somewhat unorganized and you know you’ll lose track of your writing notes if they’re scattered across multiple notebooks, journals, napkins, phone notes, etc. - having one consolidated document of notes is a life saver. I keep mine on Google Docs so I can access it, add to it, and look through it for inspiration anywhere at any time. When I have one of those Shower Thoughts that I jot down on my phone or on a napkin during dinner, I set myself a reminder on my phone to type it up in my Story Ideas document later.

(Or, if the idea I had was for a story of mine that I’ve already started planning / drafting / whatever, I put it in the document for that story instead of the Big Random Story Ideas doc. You get it.)

8) Have other ways to collect and save writing ideas, besides just writing stuff down. If you like Pinterest, make pinterest boards of your characters or stories or settings or whatever. If you’re big into playlists, make a playlist for your character / setting / story / etc. Or both. Or something else. I’m not good at drawing, but maybe you are, and maybe you like to draw your ideas. Whatever form it takes, having another way to save ideas and think about your stories is invaluable.

9) Some writers can just start writing with no idea where the story is going, and they just kind of figure it out as they go. I envy those writers. And I do that sometimes for fanfiction, where the stakes are somewhat lower and the audience is reading more for scene-to-scene enjoyment (and to see their OTP kiss) than for a Driving And Compelling Narrative.

But here’s the thing: especially if you’re just kind of starting out, writing without some sort of plan is really, really hard, and will likely lead you into a slow, meandering narrative that will likely frustrate you.

Even if you think you’re someone that just can’t write with a plan (and again, I have the highest respect for pansters out there - I don’t know how you do it, you crazy bastards, but you keep doing you) - even if you think “I can’t work with plans, they’re too prescriptive, I just want to write and see what happens -”

Try at least making the most skeletal of plans.

Even if you have no clue what 90% of the story is, yet. That’s fine. But you need to have some idea of what you’re building to, even if that’s nothing more specific than a feeling, or a turning point for your character. Even if your entire plan for everything beyond Chapter 1 is, “At some point, Charlie needs to realize that Ed was lying to her.”

This is where those Draft 0.5 notes come in handy. Because, more than likely, working on your current scene that way will spark ideas for later scenes, which you can put down at the bottom of the document and save for when they become relevant. In my experience, the line between planning ahead and making a Draft 0.5 is exceptionally thin. One can quickly turn into the other.

If you’re really, really resistant to the idea of planning ahead, that’s okay. It’s not everybody’s style. But for the love of all that is holy, write down your ideas for future scenes, even if you’re a person that doesn’t like to plan and writes only in story order, because you will not remember that idea once you get to that scene.

10) You don’t have to write in order.

Here’s the thing: I’m a person that can only do my Draft 1 in story order (meaning, chronological order). I just have to be in that flow; I need to write in story order for me to best channel where the character is at from scene to scene, both narratively and emotionally.

But my Thought Vomit Draft is another thing entirely. By using the brain hack of putting my notes in red (or another color, it doesn’t matter) and going down to the bottom of the document / page and taking notes there, and then integrating them into whatever plan I have, and then translating them into Draft 1 once I get there in the story - by doing that, I can get my good ideas onto the page (and expound upon them and let my muse carry me and ride that momentum while I’m in the moment of inspiration) without writing out of order.

Maybe that’s just me. But if you’re a person who really prefers to write in story order, that could be hugely helpful to you. It is to me.

11) Emotion and motivation will do more for your story than technicalities of plot.

If your characters really care about something, and their journey through the (shaky or weak) plot is emotionally engaging, it will be a much more compelling story than a story with a “perfect” plot and unrelatable or unmotivated characters.

If your characters care about what they’re doing, and it means something to them, and their goals and actions are driven by dreams or fears or emotions that are integral to who they are, your audience will care too. If you have a perfectly crafted plot that hits all the right beats and has high stakes and fast pacing and drama - but your characters don’t connect with what’s happening in a way that’s deeply meaningful or emotional for them? You’re gonna have a hard time engaging readers.

When in doubt, prioritize character emotion and motivation over plot. Emotion is what drives story.

This power is highly exploitable. (Just look at pulp novels and shitty but entertaining movies.) You can even use it to glaze over plot holes or reinvigorate a limp narrative. Use it that way sparingly, though. It’s a band-aid, not a surgery.

12) Evil villains are hard to write - mostly because there are very few truly evil people in the world. (There are a few. Billionaires and several big name politicians come to mind.) But by and large, there aren’t that many evil people. There are plenty of bad people, but bad people have some good in them, somewhere in there. Trying to write an evil villain is hard, because they often turn very cartoony.

Here’s a tip: it’s much easier to write antagonists who aren’t evil. Even if they’re bad people. Of course, there’s no reason you can’t write a villain that’s just truly evil - a serial killer, or an abuser, or a billionaire, or someone who legit just wants to hurt people or blow up the earth or stay in control of an oppressed population, or whatever. But chances are, it’s gonna be really hard to make them feel real, and even harder to create a plot around them that doesn’t feel forced or contrived.

Instead, try writing an antagonist / villain whose motivations and goals directly clash with your protagonist’s - but not because they want to take over the world or see people suffer. Write an antagonist who’s chaotic good, but whose perception of the situation is completely opposite from your hero’s. Write an antagonist whose only desire is to save people, and who will do anything to achieve that goal - anything. Write an antagonist who believes in the letter of the law, and will hinder and oppose the hero’s methods even if they agree with the hero’s motivation. Write an antagonist who got in way over their head and did some things they regret, and now they don’t know how to get out, and they’re doing their best but whatever they set in motion is too powerful for them to stop now.

Write villains who are human. Write a killer who thought they were doing the right thing by taking their victim out of the equation, who vomits at the sight of the body and sobs over the grave they dig. Write a government leader who truly believes she’s doing what’s best for her people in the long-term, even if it might hurt them in the short term, and is willing to endure the hatred and belligerence of the masses if it means securing what she thinks is a better future for her people. Write a teenage bully that thinks they’re the one being picked on by the world, and they’re just fighting back, standing their ground. Write a scientist who will break any code of ethics and hurt anyone he needs to - in order to bring back his baby sister from the grave, because he promised her he’d protect her and he failed. Write an antagonist who is selfish and self-centered and capricious - because in order to survive they had to look out for Number One, and that habit ain’t about to break anytime soon.

Write villains who aren’t even villains. Write antagonists who oppose the hero because of moral differences. Write antagonists who are trying to do the right thing. Write antagonists who treat the heroes with kindness and dignity and respect and gentleness.

They don’t have to be good. They don’t have to be Misunderstood Sweethearts who “deserve” a redemption arc. They can be cruel and nasty and dismissive and callous and violent and etc. etc.

Just hesitate before you make them Evil-with-a-capital-E. Because evil is hard to write, and honestly, boring to read. Flawed human beings with goals and motivations that directly oppose the main characters’ are much easier to write and much more interesting to read.

Ask why. Why is your villain trying to take over the world? What does that even mean? Are they trying to create a Star-Trek-like post-capitalism utopia, but they know that won’t happen in a million lifetimes, so they’re trying to do it by force? Are they actually super in favor of human rights, but they got very impatient waiting for the world to do anything about poverty and war, so they decided to take it into their own hands? Are they determined to fix the world - no matter the cost? Are they terrified and overwhelmed, but committed to see it through to the end? Or - maybe they’re just doing it on a dare. Maybe they don’t really give a shit about world domination, they were just a mediocre rich white guy who decided to fuck around and find out, and now he’s kind of curious how far he can take this thing. And now he’s kind of an internationally-wanted criminal, so he’s kind of stuck living on his hidden private island in his multi-billion dollar secret base, strapping lasers to sharks’ heads for the hell of it. Gross, selfish, uncaring, and dangerous? For sure. Evil? Depends on your definition. See, now we’re getting somewhere.

13) It’s tempting to let the plot control the characters. It’s easy to drop your characters into a situation and see how they react. But here’s the thing: that doesn’t drive plot. In fact, it bogs down pacing. Instead, try to build you plot off of your characters’ actions and decisions. Let your character build their own situation. Not to say it should go they way they wanted it to go; in fact, usually, their grand plans should go to hell very quickly. But having the characters take action and make decisions, and letting the plot develop based on that, is much easier to make compelling than making a rigid series of events and then trying to herd your characters into them.

14) Having trouble justifying a character’s actions? Consider having them make the opposite decision, or having them approach the situation in a different way. For example: you need your character to go meet the bad guy, for plot reasons, even though there’s no way it’s not a trap. If the character goes, readers are gonna be groaning with their head in their hands, because c’mon man, that was really fucking stupid. But he’s gotta go, because the plot needs that. Two ways you might handle this: a) He knows it’s probably a trap. He decides not to go. The plot conspires to get him near the villain anyway. Or, b) He knows it’s a trap. But he needs to go, for (insert reasons here). So, he approaches it in an unexpected way. He brings backup, recruiting a side character we met earlier in the story. Or he arrives on the back of a dragon, because ain’t nobody gonna fuck with a dude on a dragon. Or he goes - early, and ambushes the villain. It may work, it may not. He may get himself kidnapped anyway. But it moves the plot along without having Stupid Hero Syndrome.

15) This is a legit piece of advice: if all of this sounds overwhelming, literally just ignore it and write what you want. For real. Writing should be fun, and every single writer operates differently. If you’re sitting here like “I’m getting stressed just reading this,” just flip me a good-natured bird and get on with your life. I promise I won’t take it personally. Same goes for literally any other writing advice you see. Lots of rules and guidelines can very quickly make anything thoroughly un-fun. Just write. If you’re passionate about it and you do it for long enough, you’ll start figuring out the tips and tricks on your own.

16) Here’s the best piece of advice I can give you: know your characters. More importantly, know what’s important to them. Build their personality and decisions off of that, and build your plot off of their decisions.

I see a lot of character building sheets that ask a shit-ton of questions like “What’s their most prized possession?” “Do they like their family?” “What’s their favorite food?”

And while these are good questions, my problem with this type of character building is that if you start there, with the little stuff, you’re building on nothing. IMO, to make a truly strong character (not strong like Inner Strength, strong like effective), you need a strong foundation.

Here are the things you must know about your character:

a) What are their greatest fears / deepest insecurities? And I don’t mean “wasps” or “heights.” I mean the deep shit. I mean fears like “living a meaningless life,” or “turning out just like their parents,” or “that no one will ever love them,” or “being powerless.” You may say, “But they’re really scared of wasps! They fall into a wasp nest when they were little and got stung so much they almost died!” Great! That’s a fantastic bit of backstory. They should absolutely be afraid of wasps, and that should absolutely be an impediment later in the story. But dig deeper. What about that event actually scarred them? Was it the helplessness? Stumbling around, swatting at the air, not being able to do a single thing to stop what was happening to them? Was it that they were alone, and no matter how loud they screamed, no one was coming? Was it the bodily horror of feeling themself turn into an inhuman creature as they swelled up from the stings, unable to move their fingers or face normally anymore?

And don’t forget insecurities, because those factor in, too. Are they deeply insecure about their identity? Do they believe, deep down, that they’re ugly? Did they grow up poor and they’ve always been really touchy about that? Why? Dig deep. Figure out what really, really bothers them.

b) What are their hopes and dreams? What do they truly want out of life? What do they consider the most valuable to their experience here in this thing called life? Is it the freedom to forge their own path and be independent? Is it the approval of their family or peers? Is it a home? Is it knowledge, or understanding? Spiritual fulfillment? Is it deeply important to them that they contribute to their community, or protect those they love? What do they need in order to feel truly and deeply fulfilled in life?

Figure out those two things (each one encompasses several things, btw, you don’t have to stop at just one for each), and then use that to inform how they behave and the types of decisions they make within the story. 

It also informs character behavior and personality. 

Let’s say we have a character who’s afraid of helplessness. They’re probably gonna be the person that always wants to do something, try something, no matter how hopeless the situation seems. They’d despise just sitting and waiting, probably, because it makes them feel powerless. They might even be the person that makes rash decisions and acts impulsively and puts themself in danger unnecessarily, because in their mind it’s better than being at the mercy of fate. This is one way you could use a character’s personality to inform their decisions, which in turn helps to inform plot.

Or, let’s say we have a character whose greatest fear is being left behind or forgotten. We may have a chatterbox on our hands. They might be obnoxious. They might love the spotlight, constantly vying for attention no matter the situation, because deep down they’re so afraid that they’d be forgotten otherwise. Or, it may go the opposite way. They may be so afraid of people leaving them that they’re terrified of bothering people. They don’t want to do anything that could annoy people, anything that might give people a reason to leave them. They might be exceedingly polite, quiet, accommodating. A push-over, really.

These are two nearly opposite types of personalities, both stemming from the same core fear/insecurity. You can go a lot of different ways with it. But if you build on that strong foundation, you’ll have a strong character, and a stronger plot.

Likewise, the structure of your story can and should inform the design of these character traits. If you need your characters to team up near the end, it may be impactful if you give your main character a deep fear of commitment, an insecurity about being unwanted or left behind, and make them highly value independence and freedom. That could make their team-up for the final battle very meaningful. Conversely, you can use your character’s deepest fears and desires to help design the plot. Is your character deeply insecure about voicing their opinions or taking a stand, because of trauma they faced in the past? Make them face that. Build that into the climactic third act. Give them the big inspirational speech where they stand up and talk about what they believe to be important, what they think the group should do. And then design that character arc to run through the story, giving you more handholds and stepping stones, more pieces of foundation on which to design the plot.

In this way, character should inform story as much as story informs character. It’s a feedback loop.

Bonus: if you build your character and your plot off of each other in this way, it automatically starts to build in the foundations of that emotional investment I mentioned earlier. If your character’s decisions are based on what they most want and do not want in life, you basically have your character motivation and stakes pre-built.

Note: you need to know these things about your villain, too.

17) Start when the scene starts and end when the scene ends.

What do I mean by that?

If your notes say “Danny asks Nicole out after school and majorly flubs it,” start the scene when Danny approaches Nicole after school. Better yet, cold-open the scene on “I was wondering if, you know, you’d wanna. You know. Hang out some time?”

Don’t start that morning when Danny goes to school, unless you’re gonna cover the school day in like one or two sentences. Don’t spend whole paragraphs going through the school day, unless it’s to cover other plot points first (in which case apply these same guidelines there), or if the paragraphs are there for a specific reason, like to illustrate how stressed he is and how it seems like every little thing is going wrong. Even then, trim the fat as much as possible. Expounding and describing everything Moment-to-moment is for the meat of the scenes, not the leading-up-to and coming-away-from.

Here’s my rule of thumb: study how and when movies cut from scene to scene. Movies have exceptionally strict, limited time for storytelling; they’re excellent examples of starting a scene when the plot point starts and ending when it’s over. If you can’t picture a movie showing everything you showed, start the scene later and end it earlier.

So, why did I call Masechet Er'elim that if I think it's not really a thing?

Well, to begin with, I only finalised the development of that particular opinion today. Which is to say, I only now decided that I think magic wouldn't create another tractate. It was a process, though - I long noticed that people say that "there'll be a new Talmudic tractate" over too many things (which might be an exaggeration, but I've just seen a post that seemed to be taking it too far), and a lot of the time the rulings don't actually warrant that because they're centered on Shabbat. Always Shabbat.

This, particularly, applies to Masechet Er'elim as well. So, to keep a thorough line, maybe I should just stop calling it that. It wouldn't matter much, after all - very little progress has been done on it.

However, I do have an excuse! Because, did anyone here ever hear about Masechet Sefer Torah? And what about Masechet Tefillin?

In case you didn't, this is actually a little interesting. Because you'd think Tefillin - such a prominent Mitzvah as it is - will get a tractate of its own in the Talmud, but it didn't. If you want to look at Halachic rulings regarding Tefillin and their source in the Talmud, you'll have to go to the tractate of Menachot (lit. Offerings), of all places. Some rulings related to Shabbat will be in Shabbat, other rulings might be spread anywhere across the Talmud. This kind of makes the job of looking it up exhausting. Masechet Tefillin can help with this chore, if only a little.

Masechet Tefillin is one of what's called "Masechtot Ketanot", Small Tractates. Those aren't necessarily small and include lots of important stuff that I'm not going to discuss now, but the one thing they share is that they're not part of the canon of the Mishnah. And yes, I mean Mishnah, because the content itself is mostly Tana'ic in nature, or at least is edited to look it. Plus, a lot of the content is actually included in the Talmud, so while this particular collection isn't a part of the Talmud - everything in it is.

To not get too deep into the rabbit hole, Masechet Tefillin is one of a couple Masechtot among those that are entirely quotes from the Talmud. I think it specifically quotes the relevant Baraitot in the Talmud - Tana'ic sources that didn't get into the Mishnah, but still get quoted in the Talmud a lot. So, basically, you get a collection of Tana'ic sources discussing Tefillin, which would - under other circumstances - be considered a tractate of Mishnah, or at least Tosefta. However, those Tana'ic sources weren't a part of any collection at the time of the Talmud. Instead, they were collected later - most likely by someone who already had the Talmud in front of them, thus making it an entirely different thing. The purpose of it would be to concentrate the discussion to one particular place, making it easier to find... In theory. In practice, I don't think many people study Masechet Tefillin at all, but that's another story.

All that is to say that Masechet Er'elim could be the same. I'm not sure if there will be enough changes to the dæmonverse to warrant an entirely new Talmudic tractate, but a collection of Tana'ic and Amora'ic sayings on dæmons? That could definitely happen! Thus, I retroactively claim that this is what Masechet Er'elim is to be: a collection of saying composed at an unclear period that is probably not a Talmudic tractate. On that note, I might actually try to work on it. Maybe.

A/N: ahh sorry for the late post, in my apology i talked about going through a writing block + personal stuff... i hope this chapter makes up for it! it was originally going to be longer but i split that off into a new chapter because it flowed a bit better and i think this conversation was important enough to warrant its own chapter. that being said, i hope you all enjoy and feedback.

“So, Toji, why did you stop me from picking up those books? Kind stranger or personal agenda?” You ask while the two of you wait for the coffee. It didn’t escape you that this was your second time in a coffee shop today. 

“Hmm, that’s for me to know and for you to find out isn’t it?” He winked at you from across the table. 

Something about this man grated on your nerves but pulled you in all at the same time. 

“That’s exactly what I’m trying to do.” 

“It seems like you’re trying to get my backstory, might as well be upfront with it.” “Fine. Kind sir, would my hero be so gracious as to gift me with the knowledge of his mysterious past? I fear I could live no longer without knowing” You add with an eye roll. This man was so dramatic. 

“Why madam, I would be honoured to bestow this knowledge upon you.”

You snort just as the coffee arrives. You couldn’t wait for the warm bitterness to heat up your body. Not entirely your favourite drink on the planet but yet somehow one you find yourself having daily. You took the moment to reflect on how you ended up here in front of this man. After his little spiel at the bookstore, he asked you to get some coffee with him. He mentioned something about how he liked that ‘bratty little attitude’ of yours. You would’ve thought it was flirting until he said it reminded you of himself. You let out a little laugh at that, the thought of someone looking like him flirting with someone like you is so unfathomable you don’t know how you ever entertained it. 

“Are you going to sit there making eyes at me the whole time then?” Toji said before taking his first sip. 

You scoff. 

“Your confidence, or should I say, cockiness definitely isn’t attractive, you know?” You lie. It was very much attractive. 

At that, he simply smirks. 

“So, you want to know why I stopped you at the store and dragged you to coffee right? Well I don’t really have an answer for you. When I saw you, you just… looked like I did 2 years ago.” 

You took a moment to absorb that. 

“What do you mean?” “You know what I mean. You look like a mess.”

“That bad?” You winced, remembering exactly how unkempt you looked today… or honestly… everyday. Days old unwashed hair, stale clothes, dark circles… you name it. You only looked marginally better the days you had to work, you thanked makeup for that one. 

“Mmm, worse.” He tapped your nose. 

You swatted his hand away. 

“Hey, hands off the merchandise pal. You’re still a stranger.” 

He laughed. 

“In all honesty, you look like someone who’s had their entire life shattered and you’re carrying around the broken pieces, trying to show people that you’re whole. It’s not a good look. Your slump tells me it’s hard to get out of bed everyday, your hands tell me you’re ready to bolt at any given moment and your eyes… your eyes tell me you’re closing yourself off from everyone while screaming for help.” To that, you had nothing to say. An hour with him and he already knows you better than anyone else does, except for maybe your therapist. 

You drag your gaze away from him and look out the window instead. You prepare yourself to daze out, your favourite avoidance technique. You shut down in the face of a problem, and usually it goes away. You focus your gaze on the soccer field opposite the coffee shop, watching a group of high schoolers get ready to pass the ball around and have fun. How you wish you could go back to that age. Actually, if you had the choice, you would go back earlier… perhaps before any schooling of any sort. Before the realities of the world get thrown in your face. Back when he was still around....

You were startled out of your daze when you felt a rough hand on your chin, gripping your face and forcing your gaze to its owner. 

“Don’t.” “W-what?”

“Don’t do that in front of me, don’t lose yourself. It only makes reality much more painful to come back to.” 

The moment was tense, nothing could break the gaze between you and him. 

Toji let out a sigh.

“I’m sorry, I should’ve asked before I grabbed you like that. I should not have put my hands on you without permission.” You had nothing to say to that. You weren’t that mad at him for it but you weren’t about to forgive him either when you just told him not to touch you. 

You cleared your throat. 

“You still owe me your story then. Let’s call it even after that” You change the topic. That was perhaps the easiest. 

“Sure. I’m still sorry.” You waved his apology off and focused once again on your coffee. It was time to settle in to see exactly what this handsome stranger was all about. 

“For the longest time, I was considered a failure to my family. I had the physical capabilities for a sporting profession, hell I would’ve been able to go pro in any field I chose, but that wasn’t good enough. I wasn’t a genius, and thus I wasn’t worthy. Imagine growing up for 25 years in that environment. My own parents favoured extended family over their own son, taking every opportunity to tear me down. For years, I was their emotional and even the occasional physical punching bag. My own father told me that he should’ve told my mother to get an abortion if he knew I would turn out like this. His exact words were “You’re unworthy of the legacy you have been born into. You’re no son of mine, you’re just another mouth to feed in this world.”. Can you believe that? It was amazing they didn’t kick me out at 18 but then I think it would have been too much for the family image if I did that. Couldn’t have that now could we? What would the neighbours think?” Toji mock gasped as he finished his explanation. 

Well. Shit. 

That was definitely a lot to absorb at once. Toji knew that and remained silent while observing you, letting you take in all that information. He didn’t know exactly why he decided to open up to you after years of solitude, but something told him that if he didn’t reach out to you then he would have regretted it. He would be plagued with the thought of letting someone that obviously miserable continue to aimlessly roam their days. He always wished he had someone to help him and now here was his chance to help someone else.

“You do get it then.” You finally spoke.

“Huh?” “You get what it’s like to not want to exist, not in your reality anyways.” “Yeah. Yeah, I guess I do.” He said. He wasn’t entirely sure where you were going with this. 

You knew that other people battled depression and that each fight was different for everyone. You knew the statistic but you didn’t feel it. Today, Toji made you feel like there was someone else out there who would understand you to some extent. 

As you processed, you glanced at your phone and jolted at the time. You had to be home in under an hour to prepare dinner and deal with your parents. You had to head off. 

“This is awful timing but I have to go.” You blurted out. 

“Aw, running away after all that? You’re not being nice.” Toji joked, but you could see a hidden layer of insecurity underneath. He was afraid, afraid that he had scared you off. 

You took a pen out of your bag and scribbled down your number on the napkin that came with your cup of coffee. Once you were done, you pushed it in his direction. 

“Not running away. Running home because of the time. Here’s my number. Call it, text it, ignore it. It’s up to you. I’d like to stay in touch though. I’m sorry in advance for how awkward I am, it’s been a while since I’ve made a friend” You said as you gathered your belongings to leave. 

He picked up the napkin and you thought maybe you say the smallest of smiles rather than a smirk but you had no time to focus on that. 

As you were just about to leave, you turned around.

“Toji?” 

He swirled around on his chair to face you, eyebrows raised in question. 

“Thanks.”

With that, you left the store. If you had waited for his reaction, you would have seen his face soften, and fondness seep into his expression.
