Just a little side project
because the RotTMNT movie ensnared me, and there are so many wonderful fics about F!Turtles coming to the past, I had to give it a shot but with my own twist. So, here is the star of the story, Casey Jones’ not-so, maybe a little bit, terrible day. Title: It’s Like Cancer, My Dear (It’s a Slow Death)
Hopefully I’ll finish the first chapter soon, but for now, enjoy this little WIP. I don’t foresee this being a long fic (says every writer), but who knows. Enjoy!
Some regular Tuesday morning.
A persistent beeping noises reaches the teenager's ears, jerking him awake. With a groan, Casey reaches over to turn off his alarm on his phone. Sure, his time in the rebellion caused him to wake up at odd hours, but after over a year, sleep habits die hard. Slowly, he stretches out, waking fully. He has school in an hour. Rolling out of bed, picking out clean clothes, and brushing his teeth, Casey padded into the kitchen to find Splinter and Mikey.
"Good morning, Casey!" Mikey quips happily. "I just cut up some fruit!"
Casey smiles, "Morning, Mikey. Splinter." It never got old seeing his friends first thing in the morning.
Splinter simply grunts and raises his tea mug in greeting. It surprised Casey that Splinter was a morning person, and when he asked, Splinter had admitted that after raising four boys, mornings were the least rowdy, allowing for some peace and quiet. However, once Casey started high school, Mikey began to wake up early as well to prepare breakfast. Honestly, it was a sweet gesture.
Casey grabs a plate to dish up some cantaloupe and strawberries, taking a set next to Mikey. While pancakes are a favorite in the Hamato lair, the novelty of fresh fruit is Casey's favorite. He savors every bite, trying to forget about dreading to go to school.
As usual though, it does not last long. Too soon he is swinging his backpack across his shoulders, checking to make sure he has is mask and extra knife hidden. Too soon he is sitting on a public bus. Too soon he is walking the overcrowded hallways, and too soon is he sitting at his self-proclaimed desk in the back.
“Hey, Casey,” waves the brunet who sits in front of him. What is her name again? Jesse?
Tentatively, Casey waves back with a small, “Hi.” Every day, without fail, she always waves at him. Actually, Casey realizes, she waves at everyone that comes in the classroom. He is secretly jealous of her outward nature. If only it is that easy.
Aside from April, making human friends has proven to be a challenge. It’s not like he has any shared experiences to connect with people. What is he supposed to say? Yeah, I survived the futuristic apocalypse, if you count being thrown back in time as surviving, and live with mutated turtles and an old rat who is the movie star Lou Jitsu, but enough about me, what about you? Casey does not see that conversation going well. It’s easier to avoid it all together. Besides, he has Leo, Raph, Mikey, Donnie, April, Cass, and Splinter. What more does he need?
Apparently, a normal human life, according to April.
The screech of the bell rings, taking Casey out of his musings. It does not help his headache. Oh yeah, his headache. Pretty sure Professor Donatello would classify it as a migraine with how long it has lasted. Casey does not know when it started, just that he woke up it.
It’s probably nothing, he thought. I’m just dehydrated.
“Alright, class!” drawls his teacher, an old lady with streaks of silver hair and comically thick glasses. If anyone could suck out the joy of learning, it was his teacher. “Listen for roll call.”
Man, does high school suck.

"I've never seen such anger in a girl" and it's literally just a nine-year-old being quiet after an upsetting event, Arya really experiencing the universal girlhood experience of having your emotions policed for not responding in the "right" way

I wonder what the kids and teachers in luz's school think of her now. Shes stopped "terrorizing" other kids, mainly because she seems to have stopped engaging with most of her classmates period. She no longer brings live animals or taxidermy to school. She even participates in english class occasionally, even if she doesnt "get" the point of the book. Her rants only clock as suicidal if you know about her time in the boiling isles which the people at her school do not.
I wonder if luz's teachers and schoolmates think that luz mellowed out over the summer. If the principal/counselor that suggested she go to the camp patted himself on the back because shes "improved."
#the owl house#toh#shut up pandora#luz noceda#something something people see a neurodivergent kid having depression and breathe a sigh of relief bc now theyre finally 'normal'#people speculate maybe luz would have been fine going to the summer camp and while i agree she would have made friends#she would not have been fine! she would have just learned to suppress her identity like camila did#but going to the boiling isles was her only option bc she either gets suppressed quickly at the summer camp#or she keeps acting out at school and eventually society wears her down and shames her into conforming like it did to her mom#something about how even if the camp helps luz act like a 'normal person' she still would have been miserable bc she couldnt be herself#it temporarily benefits her by giving her friends and benefits ppl around her by making her act 'normal'#but the kids there are still weird at heart! they have a community to be weird around now but society at large will still look down on them#unless they put on a front all the time to fit in#and the boiling isles isnt perfect either its society still looks down on luz for being different#but it accepts her neurodivergence and her new friends are all neurodivergent like her so she still has a community to be herself around#and while it looks down on her for having no natural magic it isnt something shes been shamed about growing up like her neurodivergence was#anyway the camp wasnt as catastrophic as luz thought it would be and vee benefitted from it#but it still represented a slow rot. the kind that eats away at neurodivergent kids as they grow up#slowly shaming them to hide away parts of themselves deemed unfit for society#and when you hide behind a front and are exhausted and miserable from it#everyone applauds you for your 'recovery.' youve improved yourself. they never liked the old you#good job on destroying yourself and shoving the pieces into a facsimile of what the people around you think you ought to be

At this point, gender nonconformity is about what the person says their experience is.
If a woman with a beard or a man with lipstick and a mustache says they're gender nonconforming, then they are! If a woman with short hair or a man with long hair says they aren't, they aren't! And that's not even getting into the awesome nonbinary, abinary, genderqueer, intersex, and general genderfuckery that may both be and not be conforming.
So much of what is even considered gender conforming or gender nonconforming is based on a world of exclusion. When we start defining one's conformity with whether they fit into white cishetero perisex standards or not, we play into the idea that there's only a very narrow window of what is considered worthy of time and thought.
#gender nonconformity#gnc#queer#like. for instance a native man who keeps long hair might be considered GNC by white standards but for him it's absolutely not nonconformit#there's an aspect of white supremacy that silences everything else while saying that other culture's silence is indicative of whiteness...#...being 'correct' or 'moral' or 'neutral'#and as somebody who's trans and last i checked white i have my own thoughts from my own experiences#like how i don't consider myself to really be a GNC man. i'm just. man+#i'm a weird concoction of weird soup that tastes like a man but if it were Wrong#and i just don't see that as not conforming to manhood like it is seperate. i see it as irrevocably linked TO manhood#it is others who have excluded and exiled me from manhood because of *their* understanding of me and how i 'fit in' in cissexism#while i will never ever say i know what it's like to not be white i will say these conversations that PoC have started have been INVALUABLE#i am forever grateful to have been extended the patience and faith to listen in on the experiences of people...#...who are racialized in terms of gender and how they do/don't 'fit in' with often white supremacist views on gender/dynamics#may have made a post like this years back but. eh. arrest me officer i will not back down#i've been more and more 'gnc' as i go into my transition and i don't see it as nonconformity but as an outlet for my masculinity#which is why i'm not insecure about my crafts and creations. because it is coming from a male whether or not it's considered 'manly'#i have little to *no place* in cissexist society so why should i put any stakes into if they ~accept~ me#made this post while jamming out to skyrim's tavern OST (paused my game to write this)#why the HELL does the skyrim tavern music have to go SO HARD. i NEED to slam down BARRELS of mead while listening to this istg#i don't even LIKE honey so i haven't tried mead but. for skyrim i would.

I personally think that, Mitsuri was always meant to be somewhat conventionally/stereotypically attractive, except that she still isn't conventional enough by the settings standards.
I'm just basing this from my own personal experience, but from where I'm from, reputation matters, and that includes your outer appearance. It's definitely a lot looser now, but there are still times where some people have specific expectations for women. Sometimes it's not enough to be girly and feminine, you have to be a specific kind of feminine. Sometimes It's also not enough to be conventionally pretty. It definitely helps, but if people notice something odd about you, they will gossip about it.
Having natural black hair is also still a thing. Some people were very judgemental when I dyed my hair pink/red. I was also forbidden in certain gatherings bc some of them have a random policy against hair color, so much that I had no choice but to wear a black wig. Some universities also forbid dying hair in bright colors. A lot of the reasons for this is that it just looks bad to them, and it looks "cheap". It ruins their pristine, uniform image.
I think that’s why Mitsuri’s design is built around her hair. I guess some asian cultures still see brightly dyed hair as some sign of rebellion and non conformity. While my experience isn't as bad, I can only imagine that it must be a lot worst for Mitsuri. Maybe she's only slightly weird by today's standards, but she's a woman living in Taisho Era, so I believe the expectations for her might have been stricter.
That's why I think that in a way, Mitsuri being stereotypically attractive works. I think It shows that the expectations for women are just that specific and narrow, that even though she's already very feminine and checks off a lot of the list, it's still not enough. People think that, her appetite, strength and her hair already stand out too much. By their standards, She's already too weird.
I'm sure everyone is familiar with the phrase "The nail that sticks out gets hammered down."
It also makes sense why she would join the corps. Aside from her wonderful family, she must have felt so stifled by her environment. She must have felt that no matter how hard she tries, she will be forced to hide every little thing that makes her unique. But in the corps, they are fellow misfits not as bound by norms and conventions, so she joins them, because they can appreciate her just as she is.

there is no true to the book movie adaptation of Frankenstein out there because then society would be confronted with the fact that it creates its own monsters by pushing non-normative people who are capable of love and kindness, to horrifying deeds. because at its core, Frankenstein's horror consists not of what the creature is capable of doing, but what pushes him to do it. and let's face it, society would often much rather be scared of 'the other' than of the cruelty in oneself.
also, Adam would have to be trans and autistic, but that's just my personal opinion

It's times like this I like to return to the Oddworld games.
Not just because I'm a silly fan with so much nostalgia for them, but because the narratives of the oppressed rising up and taking back their power is so deeply healing. It gives me a little spark of hope that things will get better, as tough as it is.

All the clans are clearly mentally ill, that’s the trade off to being hereditary aristocracy clinging to antiquated power, you get the brain demons. The cursed techniques come with curses. But whereas the Kamo keep their embarrassments locked down tight (curse wombs secured, possessed old patriarchs symbolically folded back into the family tree, illegitimate children assimilated) and the Zen’in have the sort of of simmering rot-in-the-walls, sprawling gothic horror disease that only rears its head once every few generations, I think the Gojo have been having public breakdowns since the Meiji era. It would go a long way to explaining why everyone reacts the way they do to Satoru, and why his family is so invisible in the narrative. Oh, a Gojo having manic episodes, saying unsettling things, making vague grandiose threats, and exhibiting eccentric behavior? A likely thing for him to do.

Imagine being 9 years old and asking your dad about the things you're interested in doing when you grow up and he's like "No ❤️! But you can get married, have babies, and then maybe your sons can do those things ☺️🫶 "
#arya stark#one of those /wtf Ned/ moments#then people act like she invented misogyny cause she was like /uuuhhhhh no thanks that's not me/#/Arya is masculine/ and she's literally just a child who has interests outside of her patriarchy-assigned role#the way people read this and then demonize Arya for not silently conforming like people expect her to...#that's the ingrained misogyny from being socialized in a patriarchal society speaking babes 😭#cannot stress enough how Arya is just an average little girl and what makes her behavior stand out is their society's strict gender norms#her life + learning almost entirely revolves around the fact that she is being raised to be a wife and people resent her for wanting more :#she is NINE in AGoT and her parents are discussing her refinement because /In a few years she will be of an age to marry/#the way misogyny is explored in Arya's story is actually so brilliant and well-written (+ underappreciated) though#we feel the full weight of how restrictive their society is through her POV and get the experiences of lower-class women too#which is why it's so significant that George wrote her based on feminists who realized they wanted more than becoming wives/housewives#she's one of his key characters who will /change the world/ but people think he's sticking her on a boat bc she isn't feminine enough 😭#thank god he's writing the books and not any of these reductive hacks who thinks misogyny is subversive 🙏🏾#sidenote: would've loved to see this from her POV to get her feelings when he said this cause I'm sure it doesn't match Ned's perception#considering he views her main issues as being stubborn/difficult while we know about the self-esteem issues she has
