thinking about how throughout my childhood i was just so unaware of LGBTQ+
like not because i was sheltered, my parents weren’t homophobic, my mom introduced me to queer people on several occasions, I was hearing about gay people in the media and in the news, etc.
the problem was that i was just really dense
like i remember watching a video about a trans girl and I was like “woah… transgender people… that’s so cool wtf they’re out there? transing their gender and being not what they were assigned at birth??? WOAHHH” and then it just completely left my memory. like i straight up forgot.
and then one day i was hanging out with friends and someone brought up that they heard that there was a Pregnant Man who Gave Birth and like i just thought “oh a man with a womb that’s cool people can be born all sorts of ways, huh?”
i think they even spelled out the concept of being trans and i still was like “wow i wonder what it’s like to be born in a body that does match your gender. crazy”
(spoilers i would soon find out)
like it took me until 2016 to learn what a lesbian was. and i had already been met a lesbian couple. i only learned because of undertale and because of Dire Circumstances That I Will Mot Include for Tone Purposes

hey i get that you probably have your reasons for using 'afab' instead of 'woman' or something similar in your retail/sex shop/mattress store anecdote, but i wanted to point out people cannot tell assigned sex at birth by looking. many trans women also experience sexual harassment like what you describe even when people clock them. so im not sure 'afab' even covers what you were talking about fully.
I’m nonbinary but I appear female, and I’m only ever read as female. The point of using it there is just that what he saw was a tiny female even though that’s not what was there.
I’m not making a statement on how people read genders, but I’m not going to interrupt a funny story with a million disclaimers as to my intentions, I just trust that my readers are smart enough to know he was being sexist because of his interpretation of me.

I know it's a reference to Bilbo, who the class was based off of, but I love that burlgars in LotRO have the Riddle skill. Love the implication that in the middle of a fight you're just like, "Hey, by the way, you're in a dark room in front of a door. On either side of the door are two guards. One always tells the truth and the other always lies. What question --"

Augh that last oneshot was wonderfully painful. I think if I was in that world, and learned I had a hels, I would be SO horribly angry at the universe. Like, how dare it say this other person's life is worth less than mine? How dare it create a whole person, say that they're only a part of me, when they're distinct and independent? How dare it put someone's blood on my hands to change me for the better? I think I'd become a knight just to crusade against the universe.

Heyo! Didn't mean to leave you in suspense, and absolutely no harm done <3 I am really busy throughout the day, and most of the time the one or two asks I manage to answer for these one-shots is all I have time for before sleep.
I'm glad you like the worldbuilding [and also the one-shots so far!]
I feel like "the universe" is almost becoming its own, somewhat meta character at this point, like a stand in for the hand of the author almost, but more mindless. It's anything unfair about one world and favorable about the next, and I like how it's starting to work as a kind of... Forced perspective. As a reader [or a writer] we're always aware that for most stories, an antagonist is only ever a change in perspective. If we had the whole story, the line between "good" and "bad" would be a lot harder to distinguish. Since a protagonist is well established though, "good" and "bad" sort themselves neatly, and you have the benefit of rooting for your perspective to win.
But "the universe" vs hels has turned into the idea of that forced perspective being biased. The "good guys" really are only good by benefit of perspective, and when you're locked on the other side of that wall, pigeon-holed into the karmic retribution of being the antagonist, the uphill battles you fight when the "good guys" win are uniquely unfair. It's added a new layer to the story I didn't anticipate, a god-like narrative character that everybody gets to squint at skeptically and go, "Hey, wait, that's not fair." Maybe you don't want any character to come to harm -- maybe you very much do. But regardless, you would expect "the universe" to at least have the decency to be fair about it and not pick favorites. Something as inherent to character-ing as simply existing in the story shouldn't be biased... But it is.
Anyway all that to say, I endorse you becoming a knight of The Order of Balanced Scales, and wish you luck on your crusade!

Since he's dragonborn and speaks Draconic, Ronan often swaps between the two when writing in his journal. Mostly it's in Common, but if it's something very private or spicy, he'll swap to draconic in case any rogues with sticky fingers or nosy tieflings try and snag it from him. Very frustrating for said parties for a variety of reasons since inbetween very dry 'we did this today' text, his little stick figure diagrams of action, and sketches of wildlife and his companions, are long sections in a language no one in the camp can read but you know say something interesting.
On top of that, I think it'd be cute if early on, after Astarion starts with all the faux endearments, Ronan lets slip one of his own in Draconic. It's mostly a joke and partially an accident at first and he was sheepish about it for a bit because it seemed presumptuous given the circumstance. When he realized no one, especially Astarion, knows what's he's saying, he starts using it more and more, much to a vampire's frustration.
Astarion asks him what that word means and if it's an insult or demeaning in some manner. Ronan's being tight lipped about because that would ruin the fun as it clearly bothers Astarion in some insignificant, harmless way. Even after the whole confession thing and now they're in some kind of relationship and said endearment is basically all he's referring to Astarion as, he still won't tell him what it means.
At this point, Astarion assumes its just a nickname or something considering how long Ronan's been calling him.... whatever he's calling him. Though any time they find themselves in a library, he is not so subtly looking for anything that may help him translate...

Guys experience the world so differently because what do you mean 'Don't be afraid, there are so many people here.' Buddy, we are travelling in the dark and this group of seven men we came across in this otherwise desolated area is exactly what's scaring me. Did you think I was afraid of the ghosts? What is this reassurance?
