I think the story of Outlaws of Thunder Junction is kinda like that movie Jupiter Ascending. On first watch, you're like "wtf even is this nonsense" and then you go back to it like five times and every time it's like "everything here is bullshit and I actually kinda love it."
#jupiter ascending is one of my favorite movies#the thing that frustrates me most about otj is that there is not more of it#and rowan#a definitive lack of rowan kenrith and that should be fixed#why would eriette not take rowan with her tho??#rowan spends most of her time trying to kill oko and everyone loves it#even oko#kellan whispering softly “i have a wicked stepmother now”#outlaws of thunder junction#mtg

this post is going around again, but without this addition, but it kinda makes me want to come back and talk about the space bureaucracy scene
like so many people are just "wtf is this doing here" about it, but as soon as you read it through the lens of "this is a story about capitalism taken to its utmost extreme" you realize that that scene is fucking brilliant
because of course that's where this line ends for everyone else in the system who isn't the upper class or the prey class: trapped in a boring web of paperwork and red tape that looks like trying to do something like, oh, change your legal gender in modern america because you are nothing but a cog in the machine and cogs in the machine have to jump through 873000 hoops to prove their identity
the end result of hyper-capitalism is a glitterati class farming people to get more time for themselves, while everyone else has to live in the most underfunded dmv you've ever seen, because they don't even matter enough to be targets
it's a nightmare, and it's not even an interesting one
okay but some of the ideas in jupiter ascending are literally so galaxy-brained? like, the concept that capitalism taken to its utmost extreme would result in a "superior" (read: ultra-wealthy) class exploiting whole planets of people for their own gain? the way that the three siblings play off each other, when you're ultimately left like "shit man at least balem fucking told her he wanted her dead even though he had some seriously fucked-up emotions regarding his dead mother like holy shit can you say oedipus complex my god". but the sister is like, "the ultimate resource, the only one that matters, is more time" and that's a profound concept and also again so horrifically accurate and dystopian because she's literally stealing time from not just people but whole planets' worth of people, and has been for thousands of years, they've grown them for this purpose and of course that would be elon musk's fucking wet dream, to be able to buy himself more time, and while i don't think he or anyone else would just like. immediately jump to "kill whole planets for it" i also think that if he felt like that was the only way, he would be like "it's the Greater Good. i have Unlocked Immortality For The Human Race" and be totally blind to the fact that it was only for the rich ones, on the backs of everyone else. and yet she's still nice? just because you're a genocidal self-serving ultra-capitalist immortal monster doesn't mean you have to be a jerk about it. which is so. how the human condition works?
and yet this movie also has "bees can sense royalty" and whatever the fuck was going on with channing tatum's character and a wooden (yet somehow refreshingly horny*) love story and an exhaustingly-long chase scene that could have been thirty seconds and the Great Disappearing Sean Bean Daughter and
like it's somehow simultaneously "terrible idea, flawless execution" and "flawless idea, terrible execution"
(*in contrast to the "everyone is beautiful, no one is horny" trope, channing tatum looks like a snack and by god is mila kunis ready to eat him)
#jupiter ascending#not to say the scene is boring - it's actually one of my favorites!#it's a welcome moment of humor at a good time for it#and it's a fantastic moment that shows how... little they are within the context of the universe set up here#they're having a whole grand adventure with royalty and life and death stakes... while everyone else is stamping papers#you may have the genetic makeup of a queen but until you can prove you have value you can just get in line#and gee i wonder why the wachowski sisters would have feelings on proving your identity to a cold unfeeling government machine#that seems actively designed to make this hard for you#i wonder why. huh. strange. they surely know nothing of that feeling.#this movie has some legitimately brilliant and fascinating and incredible aspects of it#that truly deserve more recognition than they get

movies that absolutely suck but I really like them and actively participate in their fandom and I think you should too
Jupiter Ascending
the plot of this film is half-baked trash but I never cared for plot and I don't think you should either. they give eddie redmayne a sparkly cape and a golden chariot that may or may not have an actual person melded into it. a win in my book. reincarnation and a space dynasty made up of fussy siblings with mommy issues. 3/10 as an actual movie but 9/10 for me liking it.
2. The Twilight Saga
my ass is not going to reuse the ''twilight sucks haha'' thing. it is getting old. These movies are also half-baked in plot but hilarious when watched ironically and the side-characters are interesting and loveable, no matter how dull the main characters can be at times. the extremely long pauses between dialogue are not the only problem with these movies, but I definitely enjoy making memes and talking about the other members of the cullen family. 2.5/10 as actual movies (the plots get worse as they go along) but 10/10 for me making memes and loving the cullens besides edward.
3. Like Minds
ok hear me out I LOVE this movie. the people in its fandom are some of the only people who have ever been actually nice to me in my life. this is my second favorite movie. but is it good? heck nah. The plot isn't half-baked it's overbaked. they thought too much about it and then none of it made sense and then they were like ''this is the worst movie ever'' and gay trans teenagers (me and 4 other people) were like ''do you promise? 🥺'' this movie is the best because it's gay gay homosexual gay and you can already tell how much I love stupid eddie redmayne movies. 5/10 on the actually good movie scale but 100000/10 in my heart.
4. all three of the star wars sequel movies
I used to really be into star wars, ok. I still like it now. I always grew up watching the prequels which were also bad but I love those ones and they were kinda better than these. So when I saw these in theaters at first I was like ''this is garbage. is this what we're feeding the star wars fandom now?'' but then I rewatched them with an open mind but more importantly an open heart and my opinion has changed. they may have ruined luke skywalker but damn. the new characters are lovable and Kylo Ren deserves the world. need I say more. the ''I need a hero'' version of Kylo running into the Exegol temple in the 3rd movie is legendary. 4.5/10 on the actually good movie scale. 9/10 in my heart.

Anime Recs Pt 3
Hello hello! I’ve been sick on and off this month and had a blast revisiting my fave anime for this rec series. Following the queer friendly list and the sports anime list, I finally bring a selection of BL (boys love) titles. Most are Japanese 🇯🇵 except for Mignon 🇰🇷 and Tian Guan Ci Fu 🇨🇳 I’m not gonna lie, there’s a fair amount of adult themes and hardcore angst here, but you’ll also find sweet romance and a couple coming-of-age stories. One of my favorites from this list - Ai No Kusabi - is an old classic (I recommend the 1992 OVA series over the 2012 remake) and the quality is not the best, but all other shows are pretty recent and can be found online or on Crunchyroll. I initially planned for this to be my third and final rec list, but I got a few additional recs in the action/fantasy genre for a potential new list, if anyone’s interested? Stay tuned!
1. Ai no Kusabi (dystopian, tragedy)
Summary: This futuristic tale is set in a world ruled by a super computer Jupiter, where its cyborg creations, the Elites, rule over the human populace. Iason Mink, a high-class "Blondy" elite from the capital runs into Riki, a "Mongrel" from the slums, and makes him his "Pet". As Riki learns of the dangers Iason faces by keeping him, he finds himself developing feelings for his master.
2. Banana Fish (mafia, tragedy)
Summary: Set primarily in New York City in the 1980s, the series follows street gang leader Ash Lynx as he uncovers a criminal conspiracy involving "banana fish", a mysterious drug that brainwashes its users. In the course of his investigation he encounters Eiji Okumura, a Japanese photographer's assistant with whom he forms a close bond.
3. Doukyuusei (movie - school, romance)
Summary: Rihito Sajo, an honor student with a perfect score on the entrance exam and Hikaru Kusakabe, in a band and popular among girls, would have never crossed paths. Until one day they started talking at the practice for their school’s upcoming chorus festival.
4. Given (school, music)
Summary: High schooler Ritsuka Uenoyama is the guitarist for a band composed of himself, bassist Haruki Nakayama, and drummer Akihiko Kaji. He becomes a reluctant guitar teacher to Mafuyu Satō, a shy classmate, after repairing the broken strings on Mafuyu's Gibson ES-330. See also: Given movie.
5. Mignon (short series - vampire romance + the hottest smut you’ll see today!!!!🥵)
Summary: Centered on BL Vampire themes, the story portrays Mignon, an underground fighter in love with his doctor, who is coincidentally a vampire. The doctor's revelation triggers complications as their relationship unfolds.
6. Saezuru Tori Wa Habatakanai | Twittering Birds Never Fly (movie - mafia, drama)
Summary: The sexually masochistic yakuza boss, Yashiro, isn't the type to warm up to others easily. But when Chikara Doumeki, his newly hired bodyguard, catches his interest, he reconsiders his "hands-off" policy with subordinates. See also the side story: Don’t Stay Gold.
7. Sasaki and Miyano (school, romance)
Summary: Shy and easily flustered Miyano harbors an embarrassing secret - he is a "fudanshi", a boy who likes boys' love manga. Intrigued, the clueless delinquent Sasaki requests to borrow one, marking a shift in their strange dynamic.
8. Tiān Guān Cì Fú | Heaven’s Official Blessing (romance)
Summary: Crown Prince Xie Lian ascends to the heavens for the third time as the laughing stock among all three realms. On his first task, he meets a mysterious ghost who rules the ghosts and terrifies the heavens, yet, unbeknownst to Xie Lian, this ghost king has been paying attention to him for a very, very long time.
9. Umibe No Étranger (movie - romance)
Summary: On an island off the coast of Okinawa, two young men meet on a beach. Shun Hashimoto is gay and aspires to be a novelist. He is interested in Mio Chibana, a somber high school student, and starts to flirt with him. Day by day, the two of them grow closer, but then, suddenly, Mio decides to leave the island.
10. Yuri!!! On ICE (sports, romance)
Summary: Japanese figure skater Yuri Katsuki faces a crushing defeat during the Grand Prix finals and heads home, unsure of whether or not he wishes to continue his skating career. After a video of Yuri mimicking Russian figure skater Victor Nikiforov's routine goes viral, Victor decided to become Yuri's coach, much to the dismay of his coach, his fans, and his fellow Russian skater Yuri Plisetsky.

Hiiiiii, can I participate in the future spouse game? 🦋🎀🥺
My Ascendant is Sagittarius, my Juno is in Virgo and after doing some googling on Vedic astrology bc I did not know what it was, I've come to find out that the sun was the lowest degree in Gemini and chat gpt told me that my DK is the Sun. Sorry if I messed that up 👉👈
These are the houses on my DK chart:
Sun: 09:37 in Gemini
Moon: 23:11 in Sagittarius
Mars: 21:52 in Sagittarius
Mercury: 23:11 in Gemini
Jupiter: 15:18 in Cancer
Venus: 21:04 in Gemini
Saturn: 14:10 in Taurus
Rahu: 11:33 in Taurus
Ketu: 11:33 in Scorpio
One of my favorite movies is Scream and my fav song is Cola by Lana Del Rey! As for fav astrological places, I'm really into Taurus/Capricorn/Scorpio sun and Scorpio venus!!
If possible, I'd like to pick a moodboard which focuses on my future spouse!
I'm so sorry if I messed something up. Feel free to message me if I did so and sorry if I broke any rules!!
Very lively, fun relationship between the two of you. You guys will always goof off and will act like cute shy kids around each other. You future spouse is smart and has masculine appearance. You’re couple dynamic gives me the vibe that you two will often have dates in nature or during sunsets. He may crack jokes here and there and you’ll just be laughing and cheesing at him. If he sees a scary bug he’ll most likely chase you with the bug and you’ll just scream and run lol SOOO CUTEEEE!!!!!
I hope you enjoyed I had fun making your board, thanks for your patience and THANK YOU for being very kindhearted and patient and lastly understanding.
Feedback is required ❤️❤️

I haven't seen the Terrifier movies & don't intend to (the gore is too much for me) but I've read the plot summaries for all 3 and I'm fascinated by how they seem like something you'd make as a teen & I mean that as a good thing. Like how ppl say Jupiter Ascending is a teen girl's fantasy romance fanfic as a movie & that's what makes it so fun.
Like the first Terrifier film is this wacky gory killer clown slasher & the sequels give it this expanded story of a girl destined to be the clown's warrior princess adversary. I read that the director had the idea of Art fighting an angel warrior girl very early on, way before the first film even. And it all just feels very sincere....like "yeah I wanna make this black comedy splatterfest but there's also angel warriors and demons cause those are fucking cool". Like the director is just giving his full creative vision in this very sincere way, like he's making the stuff he wants to see. Something like that
(apologies if this is too rambly my edible is kicking in but I hope it makes sense)
RIGHT!!!!!!!! i was literally about to make a post about how the terrifier movies are 100% just cool and edgy shit for the same of being cool and edgy. and it totally works
the first movie is def more on the edgy side. it's prob my least favorite out of the bunch, but it's still a fun watch for the most part. except for the bathroom shit scene. GAGS
the 2nd one is extremely cool like yeah sienna is fated to fight art. and also her dad created her an angelsona and she gets to dress up as that angelsona and she has a sick as fuck magic sword and she's The Chosen one. and it's sick as fuck bro. in the 3rd one she wears a CROWN OF THORNS for an extended period of time. SICK AS FUCK!!! HELL YES SHE'S THE CHOSEN ONE!!!
and on top of that you get some really fucking awesome practical effects. the kills are SOOOO fun and the actor for art is so expressive and talented he really sells all this.
@ everyone who complains about these movies literally just shut up and enjoy the nightcore.....sorry you dont wanna play in this space where a girl gets to be an awesome angel warrior and fight an evil clown

*SENSITIVE TOPIC*: Jupiter Ascending.
Literally any follower of this blog could do better on the script than what was presented. I ache with the wasted potential of this movie, even without the implied incest, the whole concept of the movie was WONDERFUL. To be honest, I think they were a little brave there with Jupiter's attempted marriage to her son-not-son, an incest not quite out of the cowardly Hollywood standard, but even more so than some productions, I hope you understand what I mean.
Just, it would hardly be more explicit than the crumbs of what they gave us, so it's not the lack of explicit incest that's most disappointing (we're used to it), but rather that final rubbish and lack of a Jupiter backbone. The lack of immersion in Seraphi's life, literally lack of DEPTH.
They had so many alternatives, so many opportunities, so many paths... and they chose the most boring and predictable one of all. How amazing would it be if Jupiter found Seraphi's diary or even recovered memories at some point!
According to google it was written by two women, two sisters. I wish someone had introduced AO3 to them at some point in their lives 😔
All my disappointment cannot be put into words, it is very very sad.
My favorite shipp in this movie is Jupiter/Balem btw, it might be controversial for some but I liked Eddie's performance.
Jupiter Ascending is such a tease!
I'll agree that we got more incest than we had any right to expect, although it fell far short of what it could have been.
I'm totally with you about Seraphi. I wanted to learn so much more about her. Instead they chose to just give us a few crumbs. I would have been happy is the movie had primarily been about the Abrasax family. Imagine. I wanted so much more Balem/Seraphi and sibling interaction.

Two words. Queen. Lionheart.
Although let me tell you, Darcy and Elizabeth came reeeally close to snatching this crown!

I feel like I’ve made this post before but I will make it again: I fucking LOVE scifi fashion, especially OLD scifi fashion.
I definitely love old B-movie and pulp-style “future fashion” the MOST, obviously, because I am just Delighted by visions of the future that are “contemporary fashion with garbage glued onto it,” but even higher budget movies can be so incredible when they allow themselves to have fun.
The challenge in trying to emulate the feel of “old scifi” as a design direction is that there are so many flavors of scifi, and each one landed on what is now considered Iconic because that’s what they had the budget for.
Some of the most iconic outfits of the broad genre are literally space crew uniforms, with utilitarian designs suitable for mass production and for visual clarity. These are usually inspired somewhat by irl military uniform design, and utilize color blocking and clean lines. This shares DNA with a lot of the design direction for anime and animated series in the genre, which benefit from simpler outfits and designated character colors. These all aim for being evocative- quite literally, Iconic- and succeed so well that they become can shorthand for the genre as a whole.
Similar in aesthetics is pulp pinup scifi, which falls between Iconic Designs and “10 minutes into the future bullshit fashion.” A lot of the time it’ll just be space bikinis, (or more accurately, space crop tops+sexy cutouts) but sometimes, like with Barbarella, you’ll get multiple outfits that are basically go go dancer outfits/fetish wear with chain mail/armor thrown on top, which is a very classic pulp look.
Then you’ve got my favorite, which is “10 minutes into the future bullshit fashion,” a prime example of which is in Back to the Future 2, where wearing your clothes inside out is trendy because you can see the designer labels (which, frankly, is brilliant commentary on Brand Fashion of the day, and also justifies the BS of “why are most of them wearing normal clothes”), and the rest of the future fashion is just “junk glued onto normal clothes, weird layering of statement pieces, stuff made from novelty fabrics, and sometimes someone will look like a space marine cyborg for no reason.” It’s a ton of garbage thrown together, and it rules because it reminds me of irl street fashion the most.
Space fantasy/space opera, on the other hand, tends to lean into extravagance, taking cues and employing silhouettes and concepts from haute couture and runway fashion. (Think Star Wars Prequels, Jupiter Ascending, and frankly, a lot of of the Miss Universe National outfits)
(Sidebar: This, in my opinion, is what most clearly differentiates the visual development of the original Star Wars trilogy from the prequels, beyond just the use of CGI; A New Hope HEAVILY took inspiration from westerns (black hats and white hats, Han Solo’s vest, etc), whereas the prequels and Padme’s regalia was all EXTREMELY space opera.)
The most boring versions of future fashion to me (which is, unfortunately, where Hollywood has seemingly landed on as “this is is what the future looks like,”) is “Bladerunner-Style Punkless Cyberpunk” (neon orientalism and trench coats) and “Apple Store Chic” (all white/black, smooth, minimalist, sometimes with Tron Lines if they’re feeling spicy)
I’m not saying it can’t be done WELL (Tron Legacy had a lot of fun sharp silhouettes and color coding to add interest to the Apple Store aesthetics), I’m just saying that it’s less fun than a guy wearing a 10 gallon hat with a headlamp glued to the front.
Anyway, TL;DR, please make the future weird again. I think the TikTok girlies gluing plastic fish to their outfits are the first step to a new and hopeful future.

Top 5 fictional universes (movies/tv/stage/books)
I tried to think of universes that substantially deviate from a realistic one—like stuff that requires worldbuilding, so this isn't just a list of Media I Really Like.
The Hunger Games (series). My favorite worldbuilding ever, I reread them over and over and never get bored.
Everything Everywhere All At Once (technically infinite universes I guess)
Angels in America
Orphan Black (S1E1 best setup for any piece of media ever)
Jupiter Ascending
Sleepover Saturday
#last one is kind of a joke kind of not#this is a great question but incredibly hard to answer#especially because i don't consume a lot of fantasy/sci-fi#i've tried so many books that supposed to be the same flavor as thg and been disappointed by them all =/#anyone else read murdertrending that shit was CRAZY#ask#anonymous

#he’s a rollerblading werewolf alien and it’s played with 100% seriousness #for though I am obsessed with Jupiter Ascending being one of the more creative examples of sci-fi I’ve seen in a while #with a super rich universe hinted at in its backstories #and the tech! the spaceships are so cool! #Sean Bean is there and his character doesn’t die! #anyway to watch Jupiter ascending (2015) it’s fun (tags courtesy of @wittywallflower)

#honestly? I would have been so much better as a tv series #or even miniseries #it's a good story and concept #great even #but trying to cram it into one movie didn't do it justice @bruise-pristine-serene I'm pulling out your tags because you're RIGHT but also since we're decidedly never getting that in canon form, I want to again plug a longfic that explores the worldbuilding in absolutely phenomenal style, while Jupiter attempts to find a way to use her power to Take Down the System, and also Caine is still there being hot and having emotions he doesn't understand: Rise by VR_Trakowski [mature, Jupiter/Caine, 200k+ words, ensemble, rockin' awesome OCs. warnings for minor gore and OC death.] If the choice is fly or fall, you spread your wings. a++++ one of my favorite fics of all time (still WIP) (comment courtesy of @arrows-for-pens)
.
we must give consideration to the alienated laborer allegory in the form of the man-as-dog thesis central to caine wise's character in jupiter ascending. wise is the metamyth for the way we are molded before birth (spliced) and the ways we accept that molding because we see no way out, while at the same time gnawing at the cage that holds us and the hand that holds our leash because we know this is unnatural, until one day, pushed past our own humanity by the constraints upon us, we snap and are punished. the cycle repeats itself without consistency or logic, and causes the man-as-dog to forever vacillate between fawning, servile lapdog and feral, barely-controlled attack dog, a constant oscillation with no time to just rest and not have to act, contemplate, or just serve-- much less contemplate whether one is a service dog or a pack leader, and how to best protect one's pack, while deciding: man? dog? sometimes? neither? both?
in this essay i will discuss how channing tatum's weird bleach job and muscled arms and abs are meant to evoke both golden lab and pitbull, while his space rollerskates signify his powerful hindquarters, which are a substitute for ...

I would like to nominate Her Majesty's Guide To The Universe by fadeverb. Excellent worldbuilding, excellent OCs. I go back to reread it regularly (possibly more than I've rewatched the movie)

What's your thoughts on New Weird fiction? And do you have any advice on how to write in that genre?
(If the second answer is against your ask policy, it's alright if you only answer the first one. Thank you.)
"New Weird"?
Didn't know that term, so I had to look it up. Turns out, that's the genre of one of my favorite book series, The Southern Reach Trilogy!
It's like nightmare fiction. Trippy, angsty, which-way-is-up fiction. I could not put the first book, Annihilation, down. When I did, my brain was messed up, I felt abnormal and unsafe, convinced my reality was actually crawling with strangely hostile energy. It was awesome. However, I would have to prepare for the melancholic anxiety it put me through if I chose to read it all again.
I know it's "new" but tons of old weird stuff is coming to mind now. First, stuff from the '60s my mother would describe as "nightmarish" or "you had to be high to enjoy it." Then the grim nightmare of Metamorphosis by Kaftka, the opium-addled adventures of Alice in Wonderland. Can I throw "Miss Peregrine's Home..." into the new weird pile? It is perhaps more fantasy than new weird, but it's also more horror/freak-show than magical. Plus, I loved the first book and my tastes are apparently quite weird.
There are so many movies I'd label new weird too, like Jupiter Ascending. So much stuff I can classify now!
Advice for Writing New Weird
It's described as a genre that flips science fiction and fantasy tropes on their heads, sometimes satirically. From that, I say be a reader of spec fic first. Know your tropes so you can twist them into terrifying and absurd shapes. Be willing to commit to the most ridiculous, strange ideas that come to mind. Then take them seriously (or ridiculously).
Be comfortable with discomfort. New weird is often dark and disconcerting. Establish an air of eeriness that will have no rational solution. Unlike horror and thriller where we know we will see the monster at the end or that the trauma will be resolved, new weird stays weird and rarely supplies a come-down. If anxiety is something you struggle with, have ways to come down yourself after each writing session.
New weird stories do not need to explain why they are weird. They use logic sparingly to suspend disbelief in places where reality must be hyperreal to contrast the dreaminess that will follow. Places that hold the story and theme together may need a semblance of stability and relatability to the reader, but mostly the point is that there is no logic, at least not a familiar one. Logic in new weird is entirely up to the author, like their own private language. The reader has to accept that there may never be a satisfying resolution, and be satisfied with open endings and unexplained phenomena.
Emotional catharsis is in high demand. At least, that's what I enjoy about new weird. Experiencing intense, galaxy-brain-meme levels of emotion seems to be a thing for new weird characters. Describing those emotions and what causes them may be difficult for some writers, or great inner exploration for others. When logic, reality, and other factors normally used to tether readers to a story/character are missing, emotion becomes the most relatable tool a writer can employ.
There are worse things than death. Characters in new weird typically go through bizarre transformations, horrifying circumstances, and mind-altering states. The question is often asked, "Is it worse to fall asleep in death, or to live forever as a lonely, deformed monster with warped memories of being human?" and the answer is always "Deformed monster of loneliness! With tentacle wings! And a drinking problem! And distant memories of a happier life where they were a human mother! And those aren't even their memories!" (Now I'm thinking of Lily from Fallout: New Vegas and it's making me sad).
TL;DR --- Be prepared for anxiety and chaos and strong emotions. Stick to a storyline, please, but overall go where the weird takes you.

+ Please review my pinned Ask Policy before sending in your ask. Thank you.
+ I'm moving to another state and the process is taking up all my time and money 😥. If you'd be so kind as to Buy Me a Coffee on ko-fi, I'd really, genuinely appreciate it. Trying my best to stay on top of this blog, but might need to take a break for a while...

not asking how many you've watched recently, BUT can I ask which channing tatum movie is your favourite? for me it's a tie between the lost city and jupiter ascending lol. no worries if you're not wanting to answer asks though! 👍
omfg a truly impossible question but one i am happy to discuss... yeah if it's favorite movie that channing tatum is in i think it's jupiter ascending but i rarely go for that one when im in the mood for a channing tatum film because his role in that one is like. sort of minor compared to some of the other options... so favorite channing tatum film i think has to honestly be magic mike xxl.
not to really get into it but obv the first magic mike is about channing tatum trying to start his own business and ultimately doing that plus finding the wifegirl of his dreams and in order to accomplish this the film sets up this like. dichotomy between channing tatum's debauched life of stripping and sex and drugs and the dream job/dream wife/dream life trifecta that he dreams of. so i LOVE that the sequel immediately bursts that bubble and is like. well actually channing tatum does not like his dream job due to it's hard to run a small business and his employees want health insurance he can't afford to give him and also his girlfriend dumped him because happily ever after is not a concept that coheres in real life. maybe after the credits roll there is still suffering and hardship and the only thing you can do about it is go on a road trip with your boys to remind yourself that it's about the journey rather than the destination. i have a special place in my heart for anything that deals with the hollowness of so many of our most cherished cultural goals and ideals... and that is only a small part of what this movie is doing, either intentionally or unintentionally. obviously the phrase 'female gaze' is nothing but like. watching magic mike xxl makes you want to say it! we also HAVE to discuss the frankly insane chemistry between channing tatum and jada pinkett-smith in this film but i at the same time i CANNOT discuss it because its something everyone has to witness for themselves. ANYWAY. the lost city is too recent to really be a true contender in my rankings but i did absolutely enjoy it!!
#posts that make me type magic mike xxl into google scholar. help#asks#fredfinch#hot channing tatum summer
