You stood outside Jungkook’s house, your arms crossed as the cold evening breeze nipped at your skin. You had been waiting for him, eager to finally spend some time together after his long work hours.
But instead of his usual solo arrival, your eyes locked onto something that made your stomach twist, Jungkook’s car pulling up, and stepping out of the passenger seat was a woman.
Daun.
The new intern at his company. The one you had heard about in passing, the one he had casually mentioned before.
You watched as she smiled, thanking him before walking toward her house just a few doors down. Jungkook remained in the driver’s seat for a second, running a hand through his hair before finally stepping out. His eyes widened slightly when he noticed you standing there.
"Hey, baby," he greeted, his tone light, but there was something in his gaze, like he knew exactly what you had just seen. You tried to swallow the lump in your throat. "You gave her a ride?"
Jungkook sighed, shutting his car door. "Yeah. She lives nearby, and I was heading this way anyway."
"Right," you nodded, biting the inside of your cheek. "And how many times have you done that?"
He hesitated for a second too long. "A few times," he admitted. "But it's not a big deal, baby. She’s just an intern, and I was just being nice."
Your stomach churned at his choice of words. "Not a big deal?" You let out a short, humorless laugh. "Jungkook, I’ve been waiting outside your house for an hour, and I found out you were out giving another woman a ride home? You never even mentioned this to me."
He stepped closer, his voice softer now. "I didn’t think it was something worth mentioning. You trust me, don’t you?"
You met his gaze, searching for something, anything to ease the ache in your chest. You did trust him. But that didn’t mean it didn’t hurt. That didn’t mean the sight of them together, so casual, so comfortable, didn’t leave a bitter taste in your mouth.
"Did she ever ask you for these rides, or did you offer?" you asked. Jungkook’s jaw tensed. "She asked once when it was raining, and after that I just figured it was convenient since we were heading in the same direction."
Convenient. You hated that word.
"Would you be okay if I got rides from some guy at work regularly and never told you?" You tilted your head, watching his expression shift.
Jungkook exhaled sharply. "That’s not the same."
"It is the same," you cut in. "And you know it." Silence stretched between you both, heavy and suffocating.
"Are you jealous?" he finally asked, his voice gentle. Your lips pressed into a thin line. "I don’t know," you admitted. "Maybe I just don’t like feeling like I’m the last to know things about my own boyfriend."
Jungkook reached for your hands, rubbing his thumbs over your knuckles. You exhaled, trying to sort through the emotions tangled in your chest. Jungkook’s grip on your hands tightened slightly, his brows furrowing. "I’m sorry. I really didn’t mean to hurt you. I’ll stop if it makes you uncomfortable."
You let out a slow breath, pulling your hands away. "Don’t stop just because you think I have a problem with it, Jungkook. Stop when you realize why it’s a problem."
His lips parted slightly, like he wanted to say something, but you didn’t give him the chance.
"And no," you continued, your voice calm but firm, "I don’t get jealous." You took a step back, the weight in your chest slowly lifting as realization settled in. "I just lost interest."
Jungkook’s expression dropped. "What?" You shook your head, turning on your heel. "I’ll see you around."
You didn’t wait for his response. You didn’t care to hear whatever excuse he’d come up with next.
Because the truth was, the moment he hesitated, the moment he justified it instead of understanding, something inside you just… faded.
And you weren’t going to beg for clarity when he should have known better.
Jungkook stood there, frozen, watching as you walked away. His heart pounded against his ribs, his mind scrambling to process what had just happened.
"Wait " He took a step forward, but you didn’t stop. You didn’t turn around. You didn’t hesitate.
For four years, you had loved him. You had trusted him. And yet, in that moment, as you walked away, it felt like you weren’t leaving in anger. You were leaving in indifference. And that scared him more than anything.
Jungkook exhaled sharply, running a hand through his hair. He wanted to chase after you, to explain, to make you understand that it had never meant anything. That Daun was just…nothing. But would that even matter now? Would you even believe him? Or worse… had he already lost you?
He clenched his jaw, fists tightening at his sides as he watched your figure disappear down the street.
For the first time in years, Jungkook felt a kind of fear he wasn’t sure he could fix. Jungkook stood in the same spot long after you disappeared, his breath uneven, his heart hammering in his chest. He pulled out his phone, fingers hovering over your contact. He wanted to call. To text. To say something that would pull you back. But what would he even say? That he didn’t mean to keep things from you? That it was just a ride, just convenience? Would that even change anything?
The words echoed in his head like a haunting reminder of what he had just let slip through his fingers. A sudden rush of panic surged through him. He couldn’t let it end like this. So he ran.
His feet pounded against the pavement as he chased after you, his lungs burning, his mind screaming at him to do something, anything, before it was too late.
When he finally spotted you, you were about to get into your car. "Wait!" he called out, his voice breathless. You stilled but didn’t turn around. Jungkook swallowed hard. "Don’t just walk away like this."
You sighed, gripping the car door. His chest tightened. " Let me fix it."
You turned then, finally looking at him. And what he saw in your eyes made his stomach drop, emptiness. Not anger. Not sadness. Just… nothing.
"You don’t get it, Jungkook," you said quietly. "It’s not about Daun. It’s about you. About the fact that I had to stand there and watch you hesitate. Watch you defend something that you should’ve already known was wrong."
He shook his head. "I wasn’t thinking"
"Exactly," you cut in. "You weren’t. And I’m tired of waiting for you to start."
Jungkook felt something crack inside him. "Please," he murmured, taking a step closer. "Don’t do this. Don’t leave."
You exhaled, a slow, tired breath. Jungkook’s breath was uneven as he stood in front of you, desperation clear in his eyes. "Please, don’t just walk away like this."
You sighed, rubbing your temple. Your body was exhausted not just from standing outside his house for so long, but from the weight of this entire situation.
"I’m tired, Jungkook," you said, your voice calm but firm. "I waited outside for you for over an hour. I just want to go home and rest."
He opened his mouth, but you held up a hand before he could speak.
"We can talk later. When you finally get it."
Jungkook’s jaw tensed, frustration flashing in his eyes. "Get what?"
You exhaled sharply. "Exactly."
You didn’t wait for his response. You turned, got into your car, and shut the door.
Jungkook stood there, watching as you drove away, the sinking realization setting in.
You weren’t running away. You weren’t giving him an ultimatum. You were just… done waiting for him to understand something he should’ve known all along.
Jungkook sat at his desk, unable to focus. His fingers hovered over his phone, rereading the last message he had sent you late last night, one you never replied to.
His office felt colder today, quieter, even with the usual background noise of employees moving around. But all he could think about was you.
The door suddenly knocked, and before he could answer, it opened.
Daun.
"Good morning, sir," she greeted with a small smile. "I brought the reports you asked for."
Jungkook barely glanced up, his mind elsewhere. "Leave them on the desk."
She hesitated for a second before placing the files down. "Um… I just wanted to say thank you again for the rides. It really helped me out."
Jungkook’s jaw clenched. The rides. The same ones that led to the situation he was in now.
"Yeah," he muttered, rubbing his temple. "Don’t worry about it."
She shifted slightly. "I hope your girlfriend wasn’t too upset about yesterday…"
Jungkook’s eyes snapped up to her, sharp and unreadable. "That’s none of your concern."
Daun’s smile faltered. "Oh right. Sorry, I didn’t mean to overstep."
Jungkook exhaled, running a hand through his hair. "It’s fine. Just, just go." She nodded quickly and left, the door clicking shut behind her.
Jungkook leaned back in his chair, staring at the ceiling. He hated the way things felt right now, the way he didn’t even know if he’d see you today, if you’d even want to talk.
His phone buzzed suddenly, and his heart jumped. But when he looked at the screen, it wasn’t your name. It was a meeting reminder. Jungkook exhaled sharply, shoving his phone into his pocket.
You said you’d talk when he finally got it. And the truth was he did now. But was it too late?
Jungkook sat in his car, gripping the steering wheel, his mind heavy with thoughts of you. The whole day had been suffocating, meetings he couldn’t focus on, calls he ignored, and the weight of your absence pressing on his chest. He checked his phone for the hundredth time. Still nothing from you.
A knock on his window pulled him from his thoughts. He turned his head and saw Daun standing outside, smiling.
He rolled down the window, his expression unreadable. "What?"
Daun blinked at his cold tone but quickly recovered. "Oh, I was just wondering if I could get a ride home again."
Jungkook exhaled slowly, gripping the wheel tighter. This, this was the moment. The moment he could make the right choice. He didn’t hesitate this time.
"No."
Daun’s smile faltered. "Oh… are you heading somewhere else?"
"No," Jungkook said flatly. "I just don’t want to." Her face fell slightly, and she shifted awkwardly. "Did… something happen?"
Jungkook let out a humorless laugh, shaking his head. "Yeah, Daun. Something did happen. And I should’ve realized it sooner."
Daun swallowed, sensing the shift. "I didn’t mean to cause any trouble between you and your girlfriend"
"You didn’t," Jungkook cut in, his voice firm. "I did." For the first time, he saw it clearly. You weren’t upset about the rides. You were upset that he never even considered how it would look. How it would feel. He had been blind, careless. And now, he might have lost you for it.
Jungkook sighed, rolling the window up without another word. Then, without sparing Daun another glance, he drove off. There was only one place he needed to be right now. With you.
Jungkook drove with one hand on the wheel, the other gripping his phone, debating whether to call you. But he knew words over the phone wouldn’t be enough. He needed to see you.
When he reached your apartment, he hesitated for only a second before stepping out of his car. His heart pounded as he rang your doorbell.
Seconds felt like hours. Then, finally, the door opened. You stood there, looking exhausted, your arms crossed as you leaned against the frame. Your expression was unreadable. "What do you want, Jungkook?"
He took a deep breath. "To talk. Properly this time."
You sighed, rubbing your temple. "I told you, I’d talk when you finally get it."
Jungkook nodded. "And I do now." His voice was quieter this time, more certain. "You were right."
You raised a brow, waiting. He exhaled sharply. "It was never about the rides. It was about me not realizing how it looked. How it felt. How I should’ve never made you feel like you had to stand outside waiting for me, watching me drop off another woman."
Your fingers tightened slightly against your arms, but you didn’t say anything.
Jungkook stepped closer. "I should’ve understood the second I saw your face last night. And I hate that it took you walking away for me to get it." His voice dropped. "But I do now. And I’m sorry."
You studied him for a long moment. "So what now?"
"I stopped giving her rides," Jungkook said instantly. "Not because you told me to. But because I finally understood why I should have stopped in the first place."
Your gaze softened just a little, but you didn’t let him off that easily. "And what if I never said anything? Would you have realized it?"
Jungkook’s jaw tightened, guilt flashing in his eyes. "Maybe not right away," he admitted. "But that’s the problem, isn’t it? That I was too blind to see it on my own." He swallowed hard. "But I see it now, and I swear, I’ll never make you feel that way again."
Silence filled the space between you. Then, finally, you let out a slow breath. "You really get it now?" Jungkook nodded. "Yeah. And I don’t want to lose you over my own stupidity."
You stared at him for a moment longer before finally stepping aside. "Come inside."
Jungkook didn’t hesitate. He stepped in, knowing this wasn’t an instant fix but it was a start. And this time, he wouldn’t take it for granted.
Things weren’t instantly perfect, but there was progress. Jungkook had been more mindful, more present. He made sure to communicate, to show you not just with words but through his actions that he truly understood.
But there was still a lingering tension, a gap that hadn’t fully closed.
That evening, you sat on the couch scrolling through your phone when the doorbell rang. You sighed, standing up to answer it. When you opened the door, Jungkook stood there, holding a small bag in one hand and a guilty smile on his face.
"I know you’ve been tired lately," he said, rubbing the back of his neck. "So, I brought dinner. Your favorite."
Your brows raised slightly. "You brought food?" He nodded. "And I swear I didn’t just order from anywhere I went all the way to that one place across town because I know you like it best from there."
You studied him for a second before stepping aside. "Come in."
Jungkook entered, placing the bag on the table. He glanced at you, hesitant. "How have you been?"
You sat down, opening the takeout containers. "Fine." It was a simple answer, but he could tell there was more beneath it. Jungkook sat across from you, watching as you took a bite. When you didn’t say anything else, he finally spoke.
"I know things still don’t feel the same," he admitted. "And I don’t expect one apology to fix everything. But I just want to know is there still a chance for us?"
You put your chopsticks down, looking at him seriously. "It’s not about whether there’s a chance, Jungkook. It’s about whether you’ll keep understanding even when I don’t have to explain things to you."
He nodded immediately. "I will." You sighed, leaning back slightly. "Then we’ll see." Jungkook didn’t push for more. He simply nodded, accepting that trust wasn’t rebuilt overnight.
But as he sat there, watching you eat, sharing quiet conversation, he felt something he hadn’t in days hope.
And he was willing to do whatever it took to make things right.
Jungkook had been consistent. He didn’t just say he understood he showed it. He made sure to be more present, to check in with you without making it feel forced. He was more aware of the little things, more careful with his actions, and most importantly, he didn’t let you feel like you had to spell things out for him.
You were at your apartment when your phone buzzed. Jungkook.
Jungkook: Can you come outside?
You frowned slightly but grabbed your jacket and stepped out. When you reached the parking lot, you found Jungkook leaning against his car, his hands tucked into his pockets.
"You’re acting mysterious," you said, eyeing him. "What’s going on?"
Jungkook pushed off the car, opening the passenger door. "Get in. I want to show you something."
You hesitated for a second before sighing and slipping into the car. He didn’t say much as he drove, but his hand reached for yours, squeezing it gently. It was the first time in days that he had done something so natural, without hesitation.
After about fifteen minutes, he pulled into a small, quiet spot overlooking the city skyline. The view was breathtaking, the soft glow of the city lights stretching far into the distance. You turned to him. "Why did you bring me here?"
Jungkook exhaled, his fingers drumming on the steering wheel. "Because I’ve been thinking a lot about us. About how close I was to losing you." He turned to look at you, eyes serious. "And I don’t want to be that guy who just assumes things are fine now. I don’t want you to just settle for us being okay. I want you to feel secure. To know that I see you, Y/N."
Your chest tightened. "Jungkook "
"I love you," he said, his voice unwavering. "And I never want to make you feel like you have to question that again." The weight of his words hung in the air. You looked at him, really looked at him, and saw the sincerity in his eyes.
For the first time in weeks, you let out a small, genuine smile. "I love you too," you admitted softly.
Jungkook exhaled a breath. Slowly, he reached for your hand again, lacing his fingers through yours. This time, you didn’t pull away. And in that quiet moment, with only the city lights as witnesses, you both knew this was the beginning of something stronger.

(ch. 5) NORMALITY | jjk high school AU
Tumblr media
Preview: her cheeks red, his flags redder.
"Yeah, no, I really need to catch one of your dance comps one day," Jungkook said casually, leaning against the wall with that relaxed grin Maria had come to know all too well.
She rolled her eyes, crossing her arms. "You didn't even come to my first high school performance..."
Jungkook shifted, rubbing the back of his neck. "I know, I know. It's just—"
"If you couldn't make it to that, which was practically on your doorstep, why should I believe you'd travel an hour or two for a comp?" Maria raised an eyebrow, cutting him off.
Jungkook's gaze softened, almost serious for once. "Look, you know I would've watched if I could, right? I had something to take care of—"
"Someone to take care of," Maria quipped, unable to hide the tiny smirk creeping up her face. She'd seen him around school with some girl after that unpleasant encounter with Angela, and Jungkook's expression told her she'd hit a nerve.
The two of them stood at the entrance of the classroom, their words mingling with the low hum of other students passing by. The usual morning sounds. But this conversation felt different.
Weirdly enough, instead of looking annoyed, Jungkook chuckled, a low, quiet laugh that made her stomach do a weird flip.
"What's so funny?" she demanded, narrowing her eyes, suddenly self-conscious.
"Oh, nothing," he replied with a smirk, his eyes glinting mischievously.
"Bruh, I don't get it. You're pissing me off," Maria huffed, turning away, ready to leave him in the hallway and go inside. She took a step forward, but before she could make it through the doorway, Jungkook reached out, stopping her.
With unexpected gentleness, he pressed her against the door with his right hand then cupping her cheek with the left, his thumb brushing lightly against her skin. She froze, her heart pounding.
"Don't worry, princess. You'll get your turn." He chuckled as he released her, opening the door and darting into the classroom ahead of her to greet his mates, leaving her in the hall, speechless.
Princess? My turn? Her mind raced, replaying his words, her cheek tingling where he'd touched it. What is he on about? Is this the kind of guy Jungkook really is? If it was, she was in trouble... deep trouble.
And with that, her cheeks turned red... so did the flags waving around him.
———
Was she too forward? Too needy? She wondered if she should've brushed it off, acted cool, pretended not to care whether he'd shown up for her performance or not. But that wasn't her style—she was direct, a total "yapper" as her friends liked to say. She'd always been the type to speak her mind, no filters. Yet today, for the first time in a while, she felt uncharacteristically... quiet.
Maria couldn't stop replaying the scene from this morning, every moment echoing in her mind. What was up with Jungkook? He'd always been playful, sure, but this... was different. He'd actually been a little, well... flirty. Or whatever the right word was. Now, in the middle of maths class, she found herself alone at her desk, without her usual seat mate, staring blankly at her textbook, her thoughts chanting his name in an endless loop.
Jungkook...
Jungkook...
Jungkook...
"Maria, I'll ask again—what's the answer?" Mrs. Widya's voice cut through her thoughts, pulling her back to reality.
Maria blinked, glancing up at the board, completely lost. "I'm sorry, I don't know, Mrs. Widya."
Mrs. Widya raised an eyebrow, unimpressed. "No, you're a smart girl; you would've known the answer if you paid attention—"
"My grandma's sick," Maria blurted out. It was true, technically—her grandma had caught a cold from one of the cooks at her restaurant, so did all the other customers probably. But that wasn't the reason she'd blanked out.
Mrs. Widya's expression softened slightly but remained firm. "Alright, well, you can worry about that later. This is important information you should be focusing on."
"Give her a break. Where's the empathy?" came a voice from the back. Everyone turned to see Jungkook, arms folded, his body slouched as if he'd been in the middle of joking with his friends a second before.
Mrs. Widya narrowed her eyes at him. "You want empathy? You can show it yourself—say goodbye to your mates and and you can sit next to her for the rest of the class."
Oh, God, Maria thought, cringing. Why did he have to open his mouth?
Jungkook didn't seem to mind in the slightest. With a small grin, he scooped up his books and practically bounded over to the empty seat that was supposed to be Christopher's next to her, his giddiness annoyingly obvious.
He leaned over, his voice a whisper. "Is your grandma really sick?"
"Yeah," Maria replied, short and simple, keeping her eyes glued to her notebook.
"But that's not why you blanked out, is it?" he asked, his tone soft but knowing.
Maria resisted the urge to roll her eyes. Of course, he'd catch on. "Can we just not talk about it now? I need to focus—I'm struggling as it is."
"Mkay." To her relief, he settled into his seat without pestering her further, which was a nice change from his usual persistence, especially after the piano incident.
With Jungkook now quiet beside her, Maria felt a strange sense of relief, even if the distraction had made things awkward. She managed to turn her focus back to the lesson, glad, at least for now, that the morning's drama was momentarily out of sight.
———
I should actually pay attention more in class, huh? Maria thought, feeling a small sense of accomplishment as she finished the last question of the maths booklet. She still had 25 minutes left before the lunch bell, though it would've been more if Jungkook hadn't kept pushing her to finish faster just because he'd already completed his.
"Faster, faster! Omg, Maria, you're so slow," he muttered, leaning over her shoulder with exaggerated impatience.
"For fuck's sake, Kook. Bugger off," she hissed, rolling her eyes.
"But I want more free time! Don't you want it too?" he pleaded, half-joking, half-serious.
"Of course I do, but I get even slower under stress, so for the love of god, shut up."
Finally done, she checked the clock: 12:50. Cool. She double-checked her answers by cross-checking them with Jungkook's, catching a few small errors he'd made along the way. With a satisfied nod, she handed in her booklet to Mrs. Widya, who scanned through it briefly and gave her a nod of approval, marking it a perfect 100. Jungkook, however, had scored a 92, which she knew was due to a few careless mistakes, like forgetting to write down the units.
Maria twirled her pen, staring blankly at the sheet of paper in front of her. What can I do to pass the time? With Mrs. Widya’s over-the-top classroom rules—no phones, not even novels—there wasn’t much. She still couldn’t understand the logic behind banning books. What kind of teacher thinks to ban books? Maria shook her head, muttering under her breath as she began scribbling on a blank piece of paper.
“What you writin’?” Jungkook’s voice came from beside her, breaking her focus.
“Nun ya bizz,” she replied without looking up.
“Man, I’m bored. Just tell me. You’re not writing your diary, are you?” he teased, leaning closer.
“Why the fuck would I write a diary out in the open, especially next to you?”
“Fair. So, what are you doing then? Let me join!”
Maria rolled her eyes but couldn’t help smirking. “Fine, I’m writing character ideas and plot prompts. Lately, I’ve been into reading novels, and since we’ve got nothing else to do, I figured, why not start a story?”
“Oh, nice. I’ve never read a novel in my life. Haha.”
“Yeah, I can tell,” Maria quipped.
They both laughed as Maria continued jotting down ideas, letting Jungkook read over her shoulder. She described the male lead first: a 25-year-old fit barista who owns his own coffee shop. He’s the very definition of a gentleman—chivalrous and kind, but secretly unsatisfied with his life. She named him John.
The female lead, on the other hand, was a 24-year-old cybersecurity intern juggling two part-time jobs and an IT degree. She’s too busy for a love life but dreams of finding a man who’s masculine and not toxic about it, someone secure enough to show his softer side.
“Hmmm, how should I make them meet?” Maria mused, tapping her pen against the desk.
“Oooh, I know! I’ve got an idea!” Jungkook said, his eyes lighting up.
“Jungkook, no. This is my story.”
“Come on, it’ll be good! So John—”
Before he could finish, the lunch bell rang, cutting him off. Maria casually packed up her stuff, ready to meet Casie for lunch. But before she could leave, Jungkook grabbed her arm.
“Can we finish this together sometime?” he asked, his voice unusually earnest.
Maria chuckled, her heart skipping a beat if she was being honest. “Haha, Jungkook, I wasn’t serious about writing a story. I was just bored. You can steal my ideas, though.”
“The best part would be doing it with y—I mean like, with someone, ‘cause like- you know, the more, the merrier,” he stammered, his cheeks slightly flushed.
Maria raised a brow. “Oh, well, maybe you can get your girlfriend to help you, then?”
“She’s not my g—”
“Maria! Come on, I’m starving!” Brenda called out from the doorway, rushing in and grabbing Maria’s arm to drag her out.
“Oh! Um—hi, Jungkook!” Brenda added hurriedly.
“Hey, Brenda—”
“Bye, Jungkook!” Brenda said, cutting him off as she practically dragged Maria out of the room.
“Text me on Insta after school!” Maria called over her shoulder, flashing Jungkook a quick smile.
Jungkook stood frozen by Maria’s desk, staring after her. His mind raced. What just happened? Writing? Since when was he interested in writing? He shook his head, trying to clear his thoughts.
With a sigh, he returned to his seat, mumbling under his breath, “Maria, what are you doing to me?”
This time, his cheeks turned red.

PAST TENSE, PRESENT LOVE 𐚁̸
Tumblr media
when his childhood best friend tries to remind you she means more than you.
genre : angst, romance
pairing : jungkook x reader
— requested by a reader
Tumblr media
Jungkook's phone buzzed on the nightstand just as he was getting ready for bed. You were curled up beside him, half-asleep, your head resting on his chest. He reached over with one hand, glancing at the screen. An unknown number.
Frowning, he answered. "Hello?"
A familiar laugh echoed through the speaker, light and nostalgic. "Kookie… still using the same deep, sleepy voice when you pick up late at night, huh?"
Jungkook froze. He hadn’t heard that voice in years. His brows furrowed. "Lora?"
You stirred slightly at the change in his tone, but he rubbed your back absentmindedly to soothe you.
"Surprised?" lora teased. "It’s been so long."
"Yeah… it has." He sat up slightly, careful not to wake you completely. "How did you get my number?"
"Jin," she admitted. "Ran into him a while ago, and he mentioned you were still in the city."
Jungkook sighed, running a hand through his hair. "What’s up?"
"Well…" She drew out the word, as if nervous. "I’m actually moving there. Thought I’d reach out since, you know, you’re the only person I really know in the city. Maybe we could catch up?"
Jungkook hesitated. There was nothing wrong with meeting an old friend, but something about this felt… off. Still, he wasn’t the type to shut people out.
"Yeah, sure," he said carefully. "Let me know when you get here."
"Great!" she chirped. "I can’t wait to see you again, Kookie. Just like old times."
Jungkook forced a chuckle. "Yeah… see you soon, Lora."
As he hung up, Jungkook placed his phone back on the nightstand, but his fingers lingered on the device. He stared at it for a moment, lost in thought.
You shifted beside him, your voice laced with sleep. "Who was that?"
He glanced down at you, debating for a second. He could lie, say it was no one important. But that wasn’t who he was, and that wasn’t the kind of relationship he wanted with you.
So, he exhaled and brushed his fingers through your hair. "Lora. My childhood best friend."
Your brows knitted together, eyes barely open. "Lora?"
"Yeah… she’s moving here. She said she wants to catch up."
You didn’t say anything for a moment, just studying his face. Then, slowly, you sat up, blinking the sleep away. "Are you excited to see her?"
Jungkook frowned. He hadn’t even considered that. Lora had been a huge part of his past, but that was the thing—she was the past. And right now, all he could think about was how this conversation had already made you look a little uneasy.
He cupped your cheek, rubbing his thumb over your skin. "I don’t know," he admitted honestly. "I mean, it’s been years. People change."
You nodded slowly but didn’t say anything. He could see the thoughts running through your head, the way you bit the inside of your cheek like you were trying to keep something in.
"Talk to me," he whispered.
You hesitated before finally asking, "Was she… ever more than a friend?"
Jungkook blinked, surprised. "No. Never."
"But she wanted to be?"
He sighed. "Maybe at some point. But it never happened. I never saw her that way." He tilted your chin up, making sure you met his eyes. "And even if I did back then, it wouldn’t matter. Because I have you now."
Your lips pressed together, but you nodded. "Okay."
Still, Jungkook could feel it. That small thread of doubt creeping into your heart. And he hated it.
So, he pulled you closer, pressing his lips to your forehead. "You’re the only one who matters to me, okay? No one else."
You sighed against his chest, wrapping your arms around him. "Okay," you murmured again, but this time, your voice was softer, more certain.
But deep down, Jungkook knew Lora. And he had a sinking feeling that she wasn’t coming back just to ‘catch up.’ And soon, he’d be proven right.
-
Jungkook never mentioned her. Not once in the years you had been together.
But there she was, standing too close, laughing too hard, touching him like she still belonged.
You swallowed down the bitter taste in your throat as you watched them from across the room. Lora, had arrived in town unexpectedly, and Jungkook, being the kind-hearted man he was, welcomed her with open arms. But she wasn’t just here for nostalgia. She was here to remind you that she had known him first.
"You remember, don't you, Kookie?" Lora's voice dripped with familiarity, her eyes flickering toward you as if daring you to react. "That summer when we stayed up all night talking about our dreams? You swore you’d marry me if we were still single by thirty."
Jungkook chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck, oblivious to the way your heart clenched. "Yeah, I remember. We were kids."
Lora tilted her head, eyes twinkling with something unreadable. "Still... we had something special, didn't we?"
You turned away, unable to listen anymore. You knew Jungkook loved you. You knew he chose you. But hearing her reminisce about a past you weren’t part of, about a version of him you never knew felt like a knife twisting in your chest.
That night, you were quiet. Jungkook noticed.
"Baby, what's wrong?" he asked, reaching for you, but you stepped back.
"You never told me about her before yesterday," you murmured, voice barely above a whisper.
Jungkook sighed, his hands falling to his sides. "She was just my best friend. That’s all."
"Then why does it feel like she wants to be more?"
His brows furrowed. "She’s just reminiscing,"
"She’s making me feel like I don’t belong in your life the way she did." Your voice cracked, and that was when his expression changed. Realization dawned in his eyes, followed by guilt.
Jungkook stepped closer, cupping your face. "Hey… don’t do that. You belong here. With me. There’s no one else."
"But she knows a part of you I never will."
He exhaled sharply, resting his forehead against yours. "And you know the me that she never will. The man I became, the man I love being, because of you."
Tears welled up in your eyes. "Then tell her to stop."
Jungkook pulled you into his arms, holding you so tightly it felt like he was trying to fuse you together. "I will," he whispered into your hair. "I’ll make sure she knows there’s no room for anyone else in my heart but you."
And the next time Lora tried to bring up the past, Jungkook simply laced his fingers with yours, pressed a lingering kiss to your temple, and smiled at you like you were his entire world. Because you were.
Lora noticed the shift immediately. The way Jungkook’s attention never wavered from you, the way his fingers tightened around yours as if anchoring you to him. She tried again, laughing softly as she nudged his arm.
"Come on, Kookie. You can’t tell me you don’t miss the old days, just a little?"
Jungkook didn’t even hesitate. "No, I don’t." His voice was firm, his gaze unwavering as he looked at you instead of her.
Lora blinked, taken aback. "Wow… you’ve really changed."
He smiled, but it didn’t reach his eyes. "Yeah. Because I found the person I want to build my future with." He turned fully to you then, brushing his thumb over your knuckles. "And nothing from my past can compare to what I have now."
Your chest ached, but this time, it wasn’t from sadness. It was from the overwhelming warmth of his words, the certainty in his touch.
Lora’s lips parted as if she wanted to argue, but then she sighed, shoulders slumping. "I get it," she said softly. "I was hoping… I don’t know, that maybe we could go back to how things were. But I see now that we can’t."
Jungkook nodded, kindness in his expression but no regret. "I’ll always be grateful for our friendship, Lora. But my heart is already taken."
Lora forced a small smile, then excused herself. And just like that, the lingering shadows of Jungkook’s past faded into the background.
When it was just the two of you, he cupped your face, tilting your chin up so you had no choice but to meet his gaze. "Are you okay?" he murmured.
Tears welled up in your eyes, but this time, they were from relief. "I just… I was scared," you admitted. "That she was a part of you I could never touch."
Jungkook pressed his forehead to yours, his breath warm against your lips. "You touch parts of me no one ever has," he whispered. "My heart, my soul, everything that matters."
He pulled you close, kissed you, slow and deep, the ache inside you finally disappeared. Because the past didn’t matter. Not when the man in front of you had already chosen his future.
And his future is you.

It's in our DNA
3. I kinda need your help
Tumblr media
Jungkook woke to find himself in his bed, pillow drool soaked, hung over and embarrassed.
He called for YN and got no answer. He messaged her but no reply.
"Fuck this."
Deciding she wasn't there, and swimming in a pool of self pity he turned over and fell back to sleep.
**
It took walking to the cafe door and getting confused by the plethora of coffees on offer for Jimin to wave her over to him.
"What took you so long?" he pouted playfully.
"Yeah we've been waiting half an hour for you to come update us on last night," Taehyung whispered excitedly.
"Last night?" she blew on the coffee, licking her foam moustache. "What you mean?"
"We mean Jungkook the drunk on Weverse."
"Oh. That."
She shrugged her shoulders.
"He'd actually fallen asleep so I had to ninja my way over to the lounge, watch his stream on my phone and turn his phone off without thousands of people noticing," she took a sip nonchalant.
"Oh god," Jimin sighed, "we are so sorry. He's just so emo these days."
"Any reason why?"
Taehyung stopped Jimin from going further.
"Wait, I've seen you before..Jimin look at her face, doesn't she look familiar?"
YN scoffed.
"Are you trying to say I look common? My parents are decent looking," she looked at them, scoffing, "it's not like I've been with the ugly stick, just because I'm not an idol y'all are harsh."
Jimin laughed out loud, "Not exactly short on confidence are we?"
YN sat up straight, "Not in every situation, but I'm working on it."
Jimin analysed her face, squashing it in his hand and turning it side to side.
"I'm not the greatest with names," he paused to look at her profile again, "but I'm great at not forgetting a face. Where are you from?"
"I was born here, but studied in the States."
"Born where? Seoul? Have we worked with you before?"
YN laughed. "I wish, if I had made just one music video for you guys, I'd be able to pick my work. But alas no."
**
Jungkook was surprised to slowly realise first hand how, well, nice YN was.
Without saying anything, she hung about when he did a Weverse live, although he had cried during the last one when Namjoon had logged on, commented and asked him to sing a song.
Now, again, several gulps of whiskey later, he had pulled his beanie hat off, gripped the karaoke microphone tightly and sang his little heart out. When he was starting to ramble, she came out of her room, sleepily shuffling her feet over to the rug where he sat and gestured it was time to end his fan meet.
Ten minutes later, still saying good bye to each comment, she'd just about had enough.
Jungkook watched her grow irritated and advance towards him. Quickly spouting off the last, final quickly goodbye Jungkook looked on, as she snapped his phone shut and threw it at him before trudging towards her room.
"Thanks," he called out, although he'd hesitated until she was nearly at her bedroom door.
"Go to sleep," she shouted back, but he carried on.
"I didn't realise it was so late."
"Drink less. You're always drinking," she looked at him, but he couldn't work out what the look was. "It just makes you look sad to them all."
"You watched?" he nudged the conversation along, although all she wanted to do was go back to bed.
"Jimin said you do lives, and lately have been all emo."
So she wasn't interested in watching me, he thought. It's only because of the others.
"Try being happy, talk about happy stuff. You're too depressing to watch," she admitted before shutting the door.
He didn't like to admit it, but having YN as a roommate wasn't that bad. The fact she was innocent enough to tell him what she thought without thinking much of it, he appreciated.
This went on for a few months, and they fell into a quiet way to live. YN did her best to stay out of his way, as promised but lately her schedule has changed and he was then suddenly seeing her around the apartment during the day too.
They fell into a comfortable routine around the house. YN usually left for work before Jungkook got up in the morning so they didn’t see each other before work, but she started coming home earlier for dinner in the evenings.
Suddenly they were awkward and having to find things to talk about with each other, and finding out more about eachother as the days went on.
It was amazing how she knew how to cook, and she even made enough for him if he walked in the door on the days she was at home.
Slowly conversation became less forced, he looked forward to the time he spent with YN at night after gym over dinner; liked talking to her and having someone at home to be with at the end of the day when he walked in.
What cemented their new found friendship was coming in late, finding the light left on for him and a plate warming in the oven for him.
Tumblr media
He'd begun leaving the gym earlier on the days she was home to join her for dinner, and tonight he joined her to watch TV after they ate.
After a few episodes, he would go into his room, leaving to try and call Jennie leaving her alone on the sofa. YN hated those evenings, because he never got hold of Jennie and would come out to rummage for a drink and a long night of making sure he doesn't make a fool of himself online would begin.
But they were beginning to get along, Jungkook never did anything rude or wrong and he'd even gone as far as saying that he would never tell her to leave. She was free to leave when she was ready, and that look such a weight off her shoulders that she began to quietly enjoy being able to relax at home more.
**
After falling comfortably into their newfound roomielife together, YN got up earlier than usual and entered the kitchen to find Jungkook standing there behind the center island, topless, drinking a protein shake.
He was still wearing his running shorts and sweaty t-shirt had been flung over his shoulder as he stood there having returned from his morning workout, all sweaty.
Still, he smiled at the unexpected sight of her.
“Morning, YN. What you doing up so early? I thought you would have slept in after being away."
YN didn't make eye contact, as he stood there chest out, tattoos glistening from his sweat.
"I um, slept well. When you work outdoors most of the year, you build up stamina and endurance."
She took an orange from the refrigerator and started to peel it, holding the garbage can open with one foot as she tossed the peels.
"Why don't you take a seat, and I'll treat you to the best scrambled eggs of your life," he reached for a frying pan and then the eggs.
When she was finished, she headed for the cloak cupboard to grab a light jacket.
"Wait," he jogged over to her. "You got a little something on your face," he pointed out.
YN's hand rushed to her face but he beat her to it. Suddenly feeling his fingers against the side of her lips had her suddenly scared to breathe.
"There was some orange from the white bit," he gave her a big smile before heading back to the kitchen.
"I'm just on my way out, thank you though," she smiled politely unable to make his gaze.
"Jimin invited me out for coffee and breakfast."
Jungkook's smile turned to a frown. “YN, I really like you but I don't want you to get your hopes up."
Now she was puzzled.
"Hopes up about what?" she slipped her shoes on and grabbed her bag.
"Jimin is a bit of a flirt, he'll try it on. I don't want things to get awkward."
He knew he shouldn't have said such a lie, but it was the first time she'd blown him off and he wasn't sure how to take it.
I can't believe she's leaving me and fluffy eggs for some fancy coffee with Jimin.
She really had no idea the magnitude of the effect her answer would have on him.
"Jimin isn't like that. We've gone out for coffee before and it's not like that, I assure you. I'm not trying to date your friends Jungkook. He bought coffee last time, so I wanted to repay the favour."
No longer wishing to hear what he was insinuating, she gave up on him and closed the door fast, unable to get that image of him out of her head.
Just because they ate a few meals together, shared the apartment and laughed at the same shows that didn't mean shit.
Besides, she wasn’t looking for anything. And he was way out of her league.
But damn, she wished she could get the image of him out of her mind everytime he turned up all sweaty and gorgeous. She only wished she would stop fantasizing about the man every time she saw him—and, for that matter, when he wasn’t around.
YN tried to ignore her physical reaction to him and figured it would go away eventually, but for now, the attraction was powerful and it wasn’t easy to put aside.
"I'm just a roomie, maybe a friend. Don't be stupid YN. It's just, a little crush."
When she found Jungkook in his gym clothes in the kitchen, hair damp and sweaty from his workout and those curls of hair edging their way to his lower neck, it was a lot more than she could handle.
How dare he try and look so boyishly handsome!
His T-shirt looked soft and comfortable as if it had been washed hundreds of times, and had well-worn, threadbare, see-through spots that gave more than a hint of the muscles underneath it when he wore it. Ashamed she wished to be that t-shirt as he flung it over his broad shoulders.
On other days, she's seen it on him, slightly damp from his workout so it clung to his abs, showing off the cut of each muscle on his stomach.
She felt like an idiot the instant the image popped into her head, and how for the love of God she still had a hard time looking at him as she spoke.
"He must think I'm so lame," she mumbled as she headed for the lift.
YN wasn’t an idiot. She knew Jungkook dated pretty things and had dated Jenni, on off for ages now. Although she was confident about her looks and knew she was attractive, she wasn’t that attractive. She saw herself as girl-next-door kind of cute—appealing in a sweet way. She didn't have time to show off her outdoors beach running skills or her killer tanned abs when she was a self professed workaholic.
Yep, he has a type. The hot, sexy, idol type; leggy-blonde-model sort of way, so Jungkook wouldn't be interested in her. She was sassy, gave lip and thought too much.
Besides, she reminded herself again, she didn’t want a relationship. The whole point of this living arrangement was for her to be able to work closer to the studios and write a script to offer to dinner of the stars she worked with. Get someone to want to act her script, get a budget, a director to make her vision come to life.
"Those that don't remember why they are here, working stupid hours will be doomed to repeat it," she scolded herself, as she punched the floor in and waited for the doors to close.
The last thing she wanted to do was let him see that she was over thinking their connection.
For a second I thought he was jealous. God I've such a vivid imagination. YN you are delusional.
**
Jungkook stared at the eggs, and returned them to the fridge. It wasn't the first time he'd realised she was nothing like the women he knew and dated in the past. Hell, Jennie would have taken what he offered and started running up tabs for clothes, jewellery and trips overseas…. Instead, here YN was getting up early to go buy Jimin coffee.
He didn't have much time to think about it any more, since Jennie had decided to finally pick up his call.
"Jennie!" he cleared his throat and gave his ex-girlfriend his attention.
He heard a muffle, the sound of people in the background before she spoke.
"Jungkook, why do you keep blowing up my phone?"
She huffed but he ignored that and carried on.
"Thanks for finally calling back, I know you're on your tour now," he perked up at the fact that she picked up in the first place.
"We broke up remember, so why do you keep saying you miss me? We're in Amsterdam right now and heading back to Paris tomorrow. I'm busy."
Things never worked out between them but he was a fool for her, and he hadn't fucked anyone since they broke up.
"When you back?"
"Another month."
"Wanna get dinner together? We could go to the place we always go to."
"You mean that Italian restaurant?"
"You always said you loved going there," he wasn't sure why she was sounding like this until she sighed.
"I only went there because I wanted to pretend to like what you liked. We were dating and I thought you would just go there the once but that's the only place you'd ever take me!"
"I thought you liked it when I did that? You didn't tell me you didn't like it when we went there."
He felt his energy begin to drain, as he recounted how tired this conversation was making him.
"Yeah well I didn't like it, so now you know. And I'm not free for dinner. You're so boring Jungkook. Call me when you get a new personality."
She cut the call before he could give a sassy reply, leaving him to swear loudly to himself.
**
YN smiled as she walked back to the apartment. The sun was shining, the birds were chirping and there was hardly any traffic. She walked past a famous bakery, the sweet aroma pulled her in, and soon she was blowing an incredible amount on baked goods.
"YN!" came a shriek, that belonged to Luna.
"What you doing here?"
"Late for heading back to work after lunch. But I have great news!"
"What's that then?" YN stuffed a croissant into her mouth, the delicious buttery pastry melting on her tongue.
"Do you remember that cute guy I told you about?"
YN looked at her blankly trying to recall the conversation.
Luna sighed. "I literally messaged you this morning."
YN briefly recalled Jungkook, shirtless in the kitchen.
"Oh, you did? My bad."
"Well, anyway. There is a cute guy that works in my department and he saw you the other day at the office."
YN shook her head. "Luna no way am I dating someone from work. Just because we work on different networks doesn't mean it would always stay like that. What if it doesn't work out? Then it'll just gonna awkward."
"He's a history buff, knows a lot about the country and would love to take you on a tour of the city. Said he saw you and wanted to know if you're single."
YN shook her head immediately walking off.
"I don't have time," she lied.
"One date. You never know!" she pleaded with huge eyes until YN gave in.
"I dunno Luna.."
"Least have a look at his picture before you say no."
**
YN stood and left her room, planning to make another iced coffee when she heard the front door shut. She went to the hallway just in time to see Jungkook getting into his jacket. He looked up and caught her watching him. Because, of course he did. She felt the heat rush to her cheeks but she didn’t duck out of sight. She raised a hand and waved goodbye.
He winked at her, "I'm just out to the studio. I'll see you soon?"
YN tried not to melt.
"Sure, I'll see you soon."
YN stacked a few matching lacy sets of lingerie on her bed before deciding on a colour.
"It's not like anyone's gonna get to see them, but a little ego boost never hurt a woman," she smiled before deciding on an outfit.
YN opened the large closet, grabbing the heavy clothing she’d taken from the back of her closet to make room. Taking out a few of his jumpers, she began sorting them for a pile to be stored away.
She shoved the rest of Jungkook's things under the bed. He would probably scream to see her treating his cashmere sweaters like that, but that’s what he got for not putting his fall clothing away when the weather turned warmer. The man had a ridiculous amount of clothing.
Buffed and moisturised, she stepped out the shower, took a big gulp of her wine and into her confidence boosting outfit not realising Jungkook had already returned home.
An hour after, nipping into the kitchen for more wine to help her nerves and implant more Dutch courage, after final make up check she spied his keys in the bowl besides her.
"Jungkook?" she called loudly, finishing her wine and wiping her mouth carefully to not smudge her lipstick. "I'll catch you later."
No answer.
Then came a groan, which sounded odd.
Unsure if he had stepped on a plug or something else, she neared his door and knocked as another groan travelled through the door.
She knocked again, "Are you okay?"
Suddenly Jungkook called out clearly.
"Fuck, shit! Thank God you heard me YN! I need your help!" he pleaded as she came through the door.
YN had thought he needed help, and had never expected to see Jungkook like this; perhaps he lost his phone charger or an earring stud she thought, but hadn't banked on finding him naked in bed, his cock erect and a painful look on his face.
Jungkook never expected another human let alone YN to see him like this.
A painful erection that wouldn't go down, a half bottle of wine drunk straight out the fridge and him lying there unable to move.
"YN!" he grimaced against the bedsheet. "You're a girl."
YN averted her eyes and looked interestingly at the ceiling.
"That's very perceptive of you!" she edged forward till her knee hit the edge of his bed and grasping the bedsheet threw it at him. "At least cover up!"
Eyes closed she hiccuped.
"Ow ow ow!" he called out hissing in pain as the bedsheet hit his tent pole.
"Maybe we should call for help!" she turned the other way to ring Jimin.
"No! Don't call him please! Don't call anyone!" he whimpered in pain, making small noises.
"Then what the hell am I supposed to do when you call out for help and I find you, alone with your erection for company?!"
Her eyes opened, and forcing herself to not lower them she stared him in the eyes refusing to look anywhere else.
His eyes focussed in on YN, standing there hands on hips.
"Where you going?"
"I need to go out in a few minutes," she looked directly at his eyes.
"YN, please. Cancel. I need your help."
"I can't cancel this. I'll be in so much trouble if I cancel this one too."
"YN, please," he begged. "I need your help." He gulped, and winced as he tried to sit up. "I can't get it down. It's been nearly an hour. I thought a quick power wank and get on with my day, but it won't come down!"
"Who the fuck has a power wank?? I don't know how to help. Maybe you can just, massage it?"
Jungkook shook his head, "No please, everytime I try to go near it I feel like I've been shot. Can you rub it?"
"How the hell is that supposed to help?" she hiccuped again.
"How much did you drink?" he asked her between shaky breaths.
"A few, for the courage."
"I'm begging you YN. Please will you have sex with me. Just get on it and make it cum and then I swear I will never do it again."
YN knew she had heard him wrong. When he repeated it again, she had to blink as the warmth of the wine spread to her stomach and made her cheeks begin to warm up.
Jungkook watched her eyes blink one too many times, a slow rose tint to her cheeks.
"YN, please. I'm begging you to help."
YN simply blinked.
"Oh god, I've broken you and my dick. Jesus, YN I need your help," he hiccuped.
