Solo Leveling Season 2 - Arise From The Shadows- Episode 10 Review - Let The Raid Mission Commence!
To be honest, if you’re going to introduce this many characters, at least put a text box on who is who because it’s hard to keep up! I get that they do announce the characters and the cast list on social media, but what about the people who don’t have an account? How will they know who is who? On top of that, the localized Japanese version of the anime gives the Japanese hunter different names, so it’s a hassle for me to look up their actual names on the Solo Leveling wiki.
The training session with the Korean and Japanese hunters was nice to see, but it’s mainly to show off some of their abilities. But like, I can sort of figure out that most of them are probably going to die and that the story wants to make it seem like the Korean S-rank Hunters are weak, but they’re probably the ones surviving the whole ordeal. The main highlight is the Jinwoo vs Goto sparring match. While the condition is that they both go all out, Goto actually does leave a cut on Jinwoo’s face, showing off his power. However, it does seem like Jinwoo was holding back, but correct me if I’m wrong. I wonder what sort of fighting they’ll show from the Japanese hunters later on.
I honestly liked that the 4th Jeju Raid Mission is gathering up all the hunters that Jinwoo previously worked with like Lee Joohee and Song Chiyul from Season 1, Go Myung-hwan and Park Heejin from the Red Gate arc, and the Strike Team from the A-Rank Dungeon arc. As an anime-only, I can tell that it’s a serious feat when everyone gathers for a big fight. It’s perfect for the climax of the second season!
However, Jinwoo doesn’t participate in the raid mission as he wants to focus on his family. People might criticize Jinwoo and the writer for this, but Jinwoo is not some American superhero with the “great power comes great responsibility” thing. His first and top priority has always been his family. Also, with his actions ever since obtaining the system, he had been questioning his humanity, so needing to be with his family is also his need of affirmation about it.
Also, the ants make me feel like the author was aspired by Hunter x Hunter’s Chimera Ant arc. I mean, there’s an Ant Queen and she gives birth to a humanoid Ant King who is probably the biggest threat to the Hunters. I just hope the creators of Solo Leveling aren’t being flagged for plagiarism because of this…
Okay, I looked at the voice cast for all the Japanese hunters shown in this episode and it’s a pretty crazy cast. I mentioned Goto and Hanekawa in a previous review, so I’ll skip them. The four that participating in the sparring match: Kenzo, Kanae, Minoru and Atsushi are voiced by Tomoaki Maeno (Hak from Yona of the Dawn), Yui Ishikawa (Mikasa Ackerman from Attack on Titan), Jun Kasama (Aran Ojiro from Haikyuu) and Yoshitsugu Matsuoka (Inosuke from Demon Slayer) respectively. The ice mage with the gas mask, Kei, is voiced by Tetsuya Kakihara (Natsu Dragneel from Fairy Tail) and the hooded man, Ippei, is voiced by Kent Ito (Goro from Oshi no Ko). Tatsumi, the glasses guy with Kenzo, is voiced by Chiharu Sawashiro who is known as Miyuki Sawashiro’s younger brother. Akari, the girl with the buns, is voiced by Nene Hieda, whom I am not too familiar with. Reiji, the man with the brown hair and the vice leader of the Japanese hunters is voiced by Yuya Uchida (Naoshi Usui from My Happy Marriage). The Ant Queen also got a well-known voice actress as Noriko Hidaka (Akane Tendo from Ranma 1/2). A lot of these characters have such big-named voice actors and the fact that they were casted for such minor roles means that Solo Leveling is obviously a big deal in terms of popularity. Like, would the production staff go out of their way to cast like seven big names if this anime wasn’t so popular?
Fun fact: this episode aired on March 8, which is Sung Jinwoo’s birthday! Also a crazy way to end an episode on the MC’s birthday by having the episode end on that bloody cliffhanger. I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen! Let me know your thoughts about this episode!

To be completely honest, I'm not sold on the romance in Tell Me That You Love Me. The show itself is addictively melancholy and quiet, and the characters were likable, so I made it to the last episode. (For context: I'm having a hard time finishing Kdramas lately, so this is saying something). I'm not hard of hearing myself, so take my praise with a grain of salt, but I also can't say enough good things about the way deafness and sign language are portrayed and, dare I say, honored in this show. There are so many better analyses about the representation in the show tag if you're interested.
(Warning: spoilers for Tell Me That You Love Me (2023) below.)
However.
When Jinwoo broke up with Moeun, I found myself saying, "good!" And when I sensed they would get back together in the end, I wished that they wouldn't.
Moeun deserves someone who will outwardly show their love for her.
The show beautifully navigates the softness and quiet tension of the characters. Where I would usually say the writers lacked somewhere, I actually don't think they did. I think they made the characters so human that we're able to see the relationships in the show for what they are.
It's likely necessary that Moeun approaches Jinwoo first and puts in the effort needed to show that she *does* want their relationship and wants to work on it. On the flip side, Jinwoo's energy felt like "Sure, we can be in a relationship if you want." I understand that they are a soft couple. But as a soft, slow, introverted drama enjoyer, I didn't have a moment where he did something and I (for lack of a better phrase) felt my heart flutter. Where are the flowers? Where's the painting of her? Where's the "let me introduce you formally to my kids (students)?"
They both deserve to be with someone who puts in effort for them.

Solo Leveling AU Ideas
Just random ideas that I haven't really expanded too much on yet
Shadow Monarch!Park Kyung-Hye AU: Park Kyung-Hye awakens as an E-Rank hunter instead of Sung Jinwoo and is the one who ends up in the double dungeon. (It's mostly just her being a mother to everyone around her. Would probably end up adopting a lot of hunters along the way-)
Choibaek Beauty and the Beast AU: Baek Yoonho as the Beast, Choi Jongin as Belle, Cha Haein as Belle's family member, Hwang Dongsoo as Gaston (Jongin being scared? No, Jongin just straight up calls Yoonho ugly to his face-)
Pirate!Thomas Andre x Mermaid!Lennart Niermann AU: Lennart as a mermaid seems cute. Disney princess vibes. That's about it actually.
Chulwoo Princess and the Frog AU: Jinchul as the prince and Jinwoo as the frog (seems in character for them as far as I know-) Can you tell I used to be a Disney fan?
College Roommates AU (platonic pairs):
- Baek Yoonho and Min Byung-gyu (listen, I just want them to be happy, together, and alive-) - Lee Juhee and Cha Haein (they'd have such a cute relationship) - Thomas Andre and Christopher Reed (I'd like more interactions between them) - Sung Jinwoo and Yoo Jinho (You know that meme where one roommate wakes up at 5:30, and the other goes to bed at 5:30? That's them) - Park Heejin and Jung Yerim (also seems cute)
I may have gotten carried away with some of them-
If anyone wants me to expand on any of these/wants to expand on any ideas themselves, feel free to let me know (I like the side characters a lot. Might think of more later)

Boys Be Brave [EP.5] // Translation notes
I'm back with my - I guess?? - already weekly analysis of something Gaga subs might've missed in this show. Because apparently, the silly show got deeper and I'm staying here until the very end :D
First of all, I was curious and checked whether there is anything about Kiseob's illness, and there is! There are two diagnoses:
상세불명의 심실중격결손 상세불명의 심방중격결손 Unspecified Ventricular Septal Defect, Unspecified Atrial Septal Defect
I am not a doctor definitely, but quick googling told me it's a heart defect (also called as 'a hole in the heart') which can have symptoms of heart malfunctioning. Which would! Explain even more! Why Kiseob has wrist watch that always measures his pulse and why on several occasions he was wondering why his heart was beating so fast next to Jinwoo (well, one for obvious reasons and another one is this).
And it's something you have since birth so he's been dealing with medication his entire life. Which would also explain further - after the scene with his sister - why the urge to be a people pleaser is so serious and so ingrained in him.
Another interesting language detail I noticed in this scene. Kiseob says "That's why I just agree to anything" but it doesn't translate well to english, because the verb 좋아/좋아해 can mean "I like" (eating medicine) and "I like (the idea)/I agree". So first he started lying that yes, he likes taking medicine, and that transferred to him saying that yes, he likes this, he agrees with this (whatever that is, anything he is proposed with)
"I cannot like anyone, right?" "Why not? You're a bastard with a lot of money"
This phrase references all the previous phrases that other people used to describe Kiseob, but Balgeum doesn't sense the real problem of his friend because the phrasing is general, it can also mean 'I have no chance of loving someone', and that's why Balegum thinks it's just Kiseob having low self-esteem or something. And also to him having money = being able to love, letting himself confess and date the one he loves, so of course, that's his answer. Kiseob has a lot of money, why wouldn't he confess to Jinwoo if he likes him?
But Kiseob can't because he doesn't even know his own feelings, and everyone around tells him he doesn't have the ability to love someone.
"Giving me (toilet paper) as if I moved to a new house"
Now, I cannot be the only one thinking years ago why the hell Koreans give each other huge packages of toilet paper when they visit someone xD But this is also a cultural thing!
When your friends move to a new house, you are supposed to come with gifts and usually with very practical ones, like toilet paper (very common gift). Rich friends can give you coffee machines or humidifiers or something like that. In my country, when you visit friends (not moving houses but still), you usually bring some desserts or food to have with tea. So for some countries, toilet paper is a norm :D
Balgeum has been living in his small apartment for a long time but it's the first time Inho visits his house so he's giving it a gesture of respect (but still an awkward one).
[Interrupting my broadcast to scream about cuteness and awkwardness of Balgeum x Inho AAAAAHHHHH Now back to the schedule]
...No, we will definitely focus on scribbling over Jung Kiseob's name for 100th time, absolutely distracted from any historical knowledge going in the background ^^
Oh! By the way! I remember being surprised that, apparently, some people on social media were uncomfortable with Kiseob seemingly 'feminizing' himself to be likeable by Jinwoo. Let me tell you that no, Kiseob doesn't do that at all!
There is nothing truly that indicated that he wants to be a ideal girl for Jinwoo (who has non-gendered perfect type list as I mentioned in my previous translation notes post!). He doesn't even use typical school-girl aegyo on Jinwoo (aka acting cute), maybe a tiny bit but it's not typical and it's not usually in his language at all. He talks gently and softly a lot! But he doesn't add typical cuteness in the way he talks (like there's no pouting, mumbling words and ending sentences with -ung).
I talked about dress = one-piece = jumper suit being the same in Korean but Kiseob literally only follows what Jinwoo wrote about a person he likes (not girl). As I described it, "he's using loopholes in Jinwoo's specific list in a true himbo way" :D He doesn't really do anything girly and doesn't pretend to be a girl as I can sense.
And I don't think I need to clarify another time, but falling in love during first snow/first sight is one of Jinwoo's list. Which Kiseob already fulfilled but he doesn't know that, and he just saw Jinwoo being with Hyejin witnessing first snow, which was the last straw for him to admit his failure and give up pursuing Jinwoo.
By the way, Koreans really think the first snowfall is a romantic event, like there are saying you'll fall in love with/be happy dating with someone you'll be with during first snow^^ It comes up in many Kdramas.
