Okay, I need context for that creepy Isabela au please. It's really cool looking, but what the heck is going on????

So like?? I actually don't have much for it. I don't do a lot of Isabela-centric stuff lol (Besides Mama Isa).

I wanna say I was partly influenced by Resident Evil and The Last of Us?? More Resident Evil though.

Basically these spores (likes some kind of mushroom) started growing in the walls of Casita; no one knew before it was too late; Bruno knew, but he was too late to get out of the walls. He took too long to build up the courage and the only reason Isabela found him was because he fell out of the painting after passing out right before climbing out.. Family started getting more and more sick, and Julieta's food was sort of resisted by whatever was in the spores (they may or may not be magical idk).

Anyway, because of her gift (and the magic) Isabela was immune. Physically immune anyway, not mentally. The spores did affected her mind in some way, hence why she's a little. You know, crazy. But that, paired with the fact she basically saw her family die (not to mention what it did to them physically), she kinda lost her right mind. She found out about the spores, and got rid of them. But her family didn't recover; and by this point she had convinced herself that they were "asleep".

She ended up reading a bunch of books, that Agustín had given her, on plants, and found parasitic and symbiotic plants. She basically used these plants to "bring her family" back. They did come back, but the scars and injuries didn't go away. So, she covers it up with pretty flowers and plants and whatnot.

Not sure how the family would act. Not completely human but also not completely dead. This au also has Pedro, who she also "brought back". He was the first test subject for the plants and uh. It worked I guess. I wanna say this is just before Camilo and Mirabel's 14th birthday, and Antonio's 5th in terms of timeline. So...no Isa-Mira redemption.

She's very morally gray in this au.

Julieta's wedding is not seen, but what we do see is her and Agustín falling in love. We also see a couple of potential suitors, though people who have watched the movie know who she ultimately ends up with. It's sweet to see what she sees in Gus!

Pepa's wedding comes fairly early in the books story, and during it, readers can understand where Bruno was coming from him with his "looks like rain".

Even though it's a Bruno-centric book, it does build on all three of the triplets. Hopefully this will make more people sympathetic to Pepa and Alma and reconsider the narrative a bit.

Encanto Fic RECS (Part I)

I've been wanting to do one of these fanfic lists for a while now, but never really got to finishing any. Today, however, will be the time I finally make and post my silly little thoughts on some of my favorite fics in the Encanto fandom.

My personal taste is big ol' mixed bag of different tropes, AUs, and (platonic) relationships. However, I'd say I'm usually geared towards your typical gen, hurt/comfort or angst with a happy ending (most of the time).

(OFFICIAL WARINING: Because this is mostly a recommendation list, there are a few fics that may contain upsetting or triggering subject matter. Those fics have been labeled with a little *** next to the title, followed by a warning of what themes they may contain.)

This is merely a Part I, only covering multi-chapter fics I've read so far. Part 2 will be out shortly, containing one/two-shot fics and the ones I'm currently reading or plan to.

With that said, let's get right into it!

To fall apart, to reunite [T]

Set in an AU where Mirabel doesn't survive Casita's collapse, Julieta struggles the most in the midst of her youngest’s death, hoping against hope to getting her back. Fortunately, she might just have a chance.

This fic is absolutely heart-wrenching, but in the best way possible. I was never as much of a Julieta fan as so many other people were, but I'm pleasantly surprised how much more I grew invested in her since reading this fic. Reading (mostly) from her perspective really helps enhance her character - especially once the rest of the family and even the townspeople get some time to shine. (Just saying, the characterization of Mariano’s grandmother(?) quickly became one of my favorite details of any background character.

One Step Closer [T]

One Step Beyond [T]

Part of a Bruno-and-Mirabel-centric series, these two fics explore the (platonic!) relationship these two develop with one another and their family in the time set during All Of You (Closer), and even post-canon (Beyond).

I REALLY love the (second) father-daughter sense Mirabel has with Bruno (it will make a lot of sense later in Closer), which leads to some very well-written wholesome and bittersweet moments parsed throughout.

A Place For Crows (to rest their feet) [G]

PEDRO LIVES HALLELUJAH!!

As the note above suggests, Pedro did indeed survive the marauder attack and lived for the past 50 years in a town far, far away from the Encanto. Fortunately, after he discovers the new crack in the mountain, he rediscovers his family and how they've grown without him. This fic also explores how much the family's all grown since All Of You, but where they still struggle in a post-canon world.

I really love this one, even as someone who's… not thaaat much into the ‘[insert dead character] Lives AU’. There are both some wholesome and awkward moments where Pedro re-connects with Alma, his children, and the rest of his family. (Let's just say there's one really funny scene early on involving Mirabel, Bruno, and a classic bloodline misunderstanding.)

Because of how long Pedro's been away from his family, there's obviously a heck of a lot he's unaware of (which the family doesn't seem all too keen on sharing with him hmmmm….?) This leads to quite a bit of delicious angst and hurt/comfort, especially towards the end, but I'm happy to say it all resolves quite nicely by the end.

Mariposa [T] *

An Encantober series from 2022, writing (again, mostly) from Alma's POV, with each chapter topic centering around one of the main prompts. Starting from her childhood years as a triplet herself, to meeting Pedro, having the triplets, leading the Encanto, to becoming an Abuela.

All of this really culminates into a vast character exploration showing just how much Alma had grown from a mere Caterpillar to a powerful, headstrong Butterfly.

(**As a bit of forewarning, there are a few moments early on that might be difficult to read. **These include moments where Alma's mother verbally and physically abuses her children, as well as quite a few violent moments once the marauders attack the village, and Pedro and Alma are forced to leave.)

Encanto (Tía Pepa POV) [G]

Like Mariposa, this one's told from the POV of another character - being Pepa and her side of the family (and a few others, like Isabela, sprinkled in here and there.)

Because this one's told over the course of the movie, there are a lot of new scenes that feature the warm-colored family and what they were doing when the focus was elsewhere on Mirabel or somewhere else. There are several tooth-achingly sweet scenes that really show how much these characters love and care for one another, as well as several tense, angsty scenes that won't fail in tugging on your heartstrings.

Tremors [T]

A post-canon fic where Mirabel receives a gift after Casita's revival. The downside, however, is that this gift causes literal cracks to form. Bruno acts as a much-needed supporter and anchor for Mirabel, who must learn how to keep her new gift under control.

Each character's emotional struggles are shown incredibly well - particularly that of Mirabel and Bruno. It's heartbreaking to see how much anguish this gift causes Mirabel, especially considering how much she's encouraged her family to see their individual values that are separate from tying back to their gifts. On Bruno's end, it's sweet seeing how much he cares about Mirabel, recognizing her struggles with having a potentially dangerous gift, and consistently providing support or an extra hand to grab on to when it becomes too much. This sentiment is also applied to the family themselves, who also reach out to help in whatever ways they can.

Old Habits Die Hard [M] ***

**TW for SA/Underage !! **

Set just after Casita’s reconstruction begins, Mirabel is sexually assaulted by a rogue townsperson. With Bruno acting as her main supporter and confidant, this fic explores the trauma of the event itself and how past, unresolved familial trauma bleeds into it.

This fic is honestly one of my favorites. I'd say it's somewhere in my top-five favorites out of all the stories I've read thus far. This story is just so raw and heartbreaking - which always hits harder when it's happening to characters you love. Not to mention, the author's handling of the subject matter is done with as much respect and care as I would hope a story with content matter like this should require. I especially love how each character (except for the villain mf) - particularly in the family - is written and how they react to the devastating events playing out around them. Despite this fic mostly centering around Bruno and Mirabel, the rest of the family have time to shine (some more than others), and man, just reading how much they care and want to help Mirabel is - just -gah! I love it, man.

I definitely recommend checking this one out if you're up to it.

we see how brave you've been [G]

Set in alternating pre-canon and canon, this fic is kind of a character study told through the different perspectives of the triplets. The scenes from the triplets' perspectives are of sweet moments involving Mirabel, Antonio, and their friendship (or short moments of just them with Mirabel or Antonio.) These scenes include moments set pre-canon, in-between, and during canon scenes.

One of my favorite gen pairings in the Encanto fandom is the one shared between Mirabel and Antonio. They share an incredibly sweet, wholesome, and powerful bond, despite the... admittedly little time they actually share together in the movie. But this fic definitely fills in the unseen gaps in their friendship, particularly in the moments preceding Antonio's ceremony. Seeing the triplets' reactions to the loving bond the two youngest grandchildren share is just so sweet and proves that, despite everything that led to the cracks, this family never stopped caring about one another.

Cold and Numb [T] ***

**TW for Self-Harm and Suicide (Major Character Death) **

This one's just sad. Like - very, very sad. Set sometime after Antonio's gift ceremony (and presumably before the cracks appear), Mirabel struggles a lot with her self-worth, believing she isn't wanted in the slightest. Unfortunately, this isn't helped at all with how terribly Alma treats her in this fic and, despite good intentions, how her parents, sisters, and cousins are unable to understand not having a gift. This leads to a devastating moment in the first chapter, with the second chapter showing just how much this action hurt the family.

(With that said, there is a hopeful moment in the second chapter.)

When The Bell Tolls One [NOT RATED]

We got another Alma POV!!

Written a bit like 'A Christmas Carol,' this is an ‘Encanto watches Encanto AU,’ where Alma is shown and reacts to the events of the movie after the scene where she begs Pedro to “open [her] eyes.”

What can I say? I'm a sucker for POV character explorations like these, especially for mixed characters like Alma. Out of any Alma-centric fics, this one's definitely one of my favorites. In between, there are some funny moments reading Alma's reactions to certain scenes. However, there are also several moments where Alma is given a bird’s-eye view into the harm she'd unintentionally caused for her family.

Sound of Silence [T]

Also set in an AU where Mirabel dies in Casita's collapse, with the fallout told from the perspectives of varying characters (Agustín, Pepa, Luisa, Camilo, Antonio, and Julieta.)

Definitely a bit of a sad one, especially during flashbacks of each character's core memories with Mirabel. But I really liked Julieta’s part, especially with the note it ends on.

Shining [G]

Since the grandkids (not including Antonio) were young, Bruno and his sisters spent their summers at a lake in the Encanto. After Antonio's birth and Bruno’s return, the family makes a date to spend a day at that same lake for the first time in forever.

SWEET SUMMER FAMILY SHENANIGANS! The entire family is written so well, and there are many scenes that show how much stronger their shared bond has become. This is such a wonderful fic to read at a lake or beach on a hot summer day.

That's that for the recommended multi-chapter fics I've read so far. It goes without saying that all of these authors are so incredibly talented and absolutely deserve all the credit for their incredible stories.

Writing

Current fic: La Traes - This is the sequel to my first fic, Bruno from Before, but you could probably read it on its own. La Traes is the spanish name for the childhood game of tag, but it literally means "You carry it." This fic follows the (fluffy) relationship between Bruno, Mirabel, and Antonio, and is an experiment where I work through how trauma can rob us of childhood, and how we might possibly heal and get a little bit of it back.

Bruno from Before - My first fic! It takes place about 7 months after the movie. An exploration of Mirabel and Bruno's relationship post movie. Mirabel begins to learn more about Bruno from before the walls and is determined to help him find his way back.

Alma, After - I love Alma's character. This is a little dabble I wrote about her grief, and it ended up being a bit of a epilogue to Bruno from Before. Chronologically, it hits somewhere in the middle of La Traes.

Quiet - A collection of Encanto one-shots. They started out having the theme of "quiet," but it's really just a place for me to put my little snippets of writing :)

A Little Wasted Time - A one-shot where Mirabel and Camilo talk it out. It's a bit of a deleted scene from Bruno from Before.

How Are You Feeling, Hermano? - A one-shot I wrote after seeing this AMAZING art by @junosaccount. Bruno is sick and Julieta is there to do what she does best.

The Time You Give Me - Bruno - A super fun collab I did with the lovely @breannasfluff 💚 The pairing is a fun look into the mind of an introvert (Bruno) and an extrovert (Mirabel) who care about each other. This is the introvert side. Make sure to read Breanna's, too!

I LOVED YOUR NEW FIC OMG! Ah it made me think of the good old days of the Encanto fics, its a little bitter sweet cause now I miss all of the other authors that were writing for the fandom, Dabby, ArcticVulpix, Sinclaironfire, Allofasudden, includeficinthesequel, bellatrix_wannabe_89, and inkandstone D: I wish them all the best but man I wish they'd either come back or write for the fandom more :/

Aww thanks! It's very possible I'll write another one pretty soon, it would be Julieta and her girls-centric, and a little angsty, because angst is the best, hehe

I feel ya Anon, I also miss my fellow writers, but that's the thing with hyperfixations and fresh fandoms - they burst suddenly, have a hot phase, then start dimming... and come alive a little more every time some new content in the fandom's being released. So... if there's any short, or a book, or a tv series, or a sequel released, probably a lot of them will return.

For all it's worth, I've just quitted my massive writer's block... I believe it's the same for many authors, it's so easy to burn out when you're not careful. I wish them all the best and I hope we'll all come back here to enjoy Encanto again ;)

León had never had the pleasure of travelling in a carriage. Part of him wished he was walking alongside or riding horseback soaking in the sun. It would also mean he wouldn’t have to suck up to the Domina or endure her Roman-centric nonsense. At least he could the strange slave, who seemed to care about his well-being. León should have been paranoid. But she had a sweet face and was in the same boat.

He nodded along with the Domina’s stories about her brothers, finding her callousness disquieting. ‘You do not love your brothers?’ León’s brows furrowed, unable to comprehend her words. The memories of Julieta made him completely forget his position as a slave. ‘If my twin died, I would be ruined.’ He couldn’t see the foolishness of admitting such a weakness. Nor that it was inappropriate to say to his Domina.

Helvia Floriana eagerly climbed into the carriage, followed by her servant, then the blonde motioned for León. " Hurry now-we reach the colosseum at a decent time and you may have the opportunity to witness your future." To some, the carriage may have been a bit cramped-nothing that would transport a large number of people- so of course the Domina sat on one side, leaving her property to sit across from her.

When the horses started moving, Helvia started to run her mouth again, " When I was younger, my father, General Helvius Livius, took me with him the most often to the Colosseum. My brothers always wanted to see the lions whenever they could, and I always wished that the lions would escape and eat them. Unfortunately I've only lost one of my dear brothers, and it was from some illness-it was so terribly boring, watching him die. " She shook her head.

Julieta never could've doubted her beauty...the first thing on her mind was how to get up early and start her morning schedule,making a nutritious breakfast for a growing family,then she would occupy herself with things such as cooking...

Which wouldn't be something surprising or less-expected. A gift of healing along with her favorite activity...PERFECT! as one would say,little to no time to really notice the features on her face.

She was now standing in front of her mirror staring into her very eyes,her soul...brown eyes that hid sweetness,a warmth not to be compared,sad,almost teary..

Her reflection was not a thing she would often take into consideration,she wasn't avoiding it,no she wasn't, she was just too busy to even observe herself closely...Her hands found their way towards her wrinkles,the soft skin beneath felt foreign now,first her forehead.

Three thick lines extending from one side to another,she grinned recalling the memories(any kind of them)that caused them,then next to her eyes... innocent eyes travel across the image of her neck then visible collarbones. Julieta spotted a few moles,dark spots and redness that came with age...her grin now faded worrying over how years pass and how long it counted before she noticed her skin. The cook scanned her body,plump breasts falling to their respective sides (depicting her role as a mother of three healthy and happy girls),her hips also signed under the form of stretch marks but at the same time defining her curvy body. The nurse could swear saw her life flashing before her eyes.

Agustín,entered unexpectedly the room,scaring the older woman who was busy remincing their wonderful past "¿Amor? You might catch a cold!" As worried as he was he stepped behind her,wrapping her up I his embrace. It wasn't long before she melt into it, "Mi Vida" she sighed almost quietly,bringing her palm to rest on his right cheek , Julieta frowned and a kind smile formed again across her face "You look beautiful,Corazon" he returned the grimace placing a light kiss on her cheek,tightening his hug "I couldn't ask anything more from you Amor,you're just as perfect as the day I met you" he made sure to claim...a tear fell down her cheeks "No cariño,don't cry my love" the accident prone man turned his wife around to face her and brush her teardrops off her apples with his thumbs. A pair of teary eyes looked over his grin...

"Te quiero corazon por Siempre,por una Vida" she stared now deeply into his hazel eyes,her caring hands stroking his soft flesh of cheeks,their foreheads now resting on top of the other. Grateful for a love that burnt ever so brightly creating a 'home' they couldn't find anywhere else besides their own hearts,they were one after all...

he just hates it it’s like an irrational hatred of his that he just utterly despises the thought of for literally no reason

this can go like,,,either way. they either don’t approach him because they’re intimidated by where he comes from or they make fun of him there’s no in between

winter is his least favourite season bc it reminds him of when he first saw snow after bruno left and pepa wouldn’t get out of bed for days

he’s really, really creative

also super independent for a 15 yo. u could leave that kid in a cabin alone for a week and he’d survive just by happily amusing himself as time went by

antonio is like. his ride or die. u mess with his homeboy and it’s legit game over for u. camilo would hands down kill for that kid he goes on x-games mode fr

i know they barely interacted in the movie but i like to think him and mirabel are properly best friends. like, in a they fight like siblings but tell each other everything kinda way

his default stress-reaction is just crying. he actually cries really easily and tries to cover it up but never really does

does his fucking best to make his mami smile when she’s upset—he’ll go all the lengths and do whatever it takes to get those tears dry

has the WORST handwriting you could ever see it legit has to be translated by like a fuckinf linguist because it’s that hard to read

swears like a sailor. he’s actually the worst out of all the grandkids and has gotten beat up so many times by alma bc of his mouth

and it’s usually because she doesn’t have the time for his antics and he knows exactly which buttons to push to piss her off

you know that animation concept of him waving his ruana around like a magician while he shifts? yeah i feel like he does that a LOT

he’s all about the dramatic flair

i know it’s literally canon that he eats a Lot bc he needs it but i sort of hc him to be a really fussy eater as well ?? like he’ll eat so much but rotates between the exact same 4 meals and refuses to try anything else

hogs the bathroom Every Single Morning and enrages pretty much every single madrigal grandkid

he steps out of his bedroom and makes eye contact with mirabel opposite him and they both freeze before fucking sprinting to the bathroom

he’s fast! he loves soccer, loves running around, he’s FULL of energy

he likes to play with antonio a lot, and most weekends you’ll see the two of them around the village having the time of their lives

he’s really good at card games! knows every trick in the book, wins every round, always ends up with his pockets full because he starts betting once the adults have a few glasses of wine in them

he’s got really nimble fingers but he’s still such a clumsy fuck

he can be Horrendously insecure

he can also be very, very moody

sleeps on his tummy

he’s a big hugger and not afraid to show it at All

loves to cook with julieta. he really cherishes their little bake-offs together because it’s such a nice hobby for him

sometimes he has to pull stage curtains over the mirrors in his room when all the reflections get too much for him

he’s had a stuffed chameleon since he was like 4 and still sleeps with it every night

blushes with his ears. they go BRUTALLY red

someone called him annoying once and he still thinks about it sometimes

he’s really bad at math. like, counts on his fingers and cries over algebra homework bad

he can play the piano & accordion really well

loves building forts. will force anyone and everyone to make a blanket fort out of the kitchen furniture. would legit get casita to make a fort with him

he has a collection of little things belonging to everyone he’s ever shifted into hidden in his drawers

bottles up his emotions to the point that he lets every big thing slide until it builds up and something small just makes him explode

he can be really sensitive and goes really quiet if someone’s either intentionally/accidentally hurt his feelings

he’s a little spoon. except for antonio

one of his favourite things to do to wind down is to lie on the couch with his head in pepas lap whilst she untangles every single curl on his head
