Encanto Fic RECS (Part I)
(*REPOST due to some unnoticed file errors during first posting)
I've been wanting to do one of these fanfic lists for a while now, but never really got to finishing any. Today, however, will be the time I finally make and post my silly little thoughts on some of my favorite fics in the Encanto fandom.
My personal taste is big ol' mixed bag of different tropes, AUs, and (platonic) relationships. However, I'd say I'm usually geared towards your typical gen, hurt/comfort or angst with a happy ending (most of the time).
(OFFICIAL WARINING: Because this is mostly a recommendation list, there are a few fics that may contain upsetting or triggering subject matter. Those fics have been labeled with a little *** next to the title, followed by a warning of what themes they may contain.)
This is merely a Part I, only covering multi-chapter fics I've read so far. Part 2 will be out shortly, containing one/two-shot fics and the ones I'm currently reading or plan to.
With that said, let's get right into it!
To fall apart, to reunite [T]
- Ongoing | by ADabOfBlessings ( @adabofblessings ) & Wikluk ( @wikluk )
Set in an AU where Mirabel doesn't survive Casita's collapse, Julieta struggles the most in the midst of her youngest’s death, hoping against hope to getting her back. Fortunately, she might just have a chance.
This fic is absolutely heart-wrenching, but in the best way possible. I was never as much of a Julieta fan as so many other people were, but I'm pleasantly surprised how much more I grew invested in her since reading this fic. Reading (mostly) from her perspective really helps enhance her character - especially once the rest of the family and even the townspeople get some time to shine. (Just saying, the characterization of Mariano’s grandmother(?) quickly became one of my favorite details of any background character.
One Step Closer [T]
One Step Beyond [T]
Complete | by Breanna (on AO3)
Part of a Bruno-and-Mirabel-centric series, these two fics explore the (platonic!) relationship these two develop with one another and their family in the time set during All Of You (Closer), and even post-canon (Beyond).
I REALLY love the (second) father-daughter sense Mirabel has with Bruno (it will make a lot of sense later in Closer), which leads to some very well-written wholesome and bittersweet moments parsed throughout.
A Place For Crows (to rest their feet) [G]
Complete | by Acewithapaintbrush ( @acewithapaintbrush )
PEDRO LIVES HALLELUJAH!!
As the note above suggests, Pedro did indeed survive the marauder attack and lived for the past 50 years in a town far, far away from the Encanto. Fortunately, after he discovers the new crack in the mountain, he rediscovers his family and how they've grown without him. This fic also explores how much the family's all grown since All Of You, but where they still struggle in a post-canon world.
I really love this one, even as someone who's… not thaaat much into the ‘[insert dead character] Lives AU’. There are both some wholesome and awkward moments where Pedro re-connects with Alma, his children, and the rest of his family. (Let's just say there's one really funny scene early on involving Mirabel, Bruno, and a classic bloodline misunderstanding.)
Because of how long Pedro's been away from his family, there's obviously a heck of a lot he's unaware of (which the family doesn't seem all too keen on sharing with him hmmmm….?) This leads to quite a bit of delicious angst and hurt/comfort, especially towards the end, but I'm happy to say it all resolves quite nicely by the end.
Mariposa [T] *
- Complete | by cloudyencanto ( @cloudy-encanto )
*(mild cw: brief child abuse and violent moments)*
An Encantober series from 2022, writing (again, mostly) from Alma's POV, with each chapter topic centering around one of the main prompts. Starting from her childhood years as a triplet herself, to meeting Pedro, having the triplets, leading the Encanto, to becoming an Abuela.
All of this really culminates into a vast character exploration showing just how much Alma had grown from a mere Caterpillar to a powerful, headstrong Butterfly.
(**As a bit of forewarning, there are a few moments early on that might be difficult to read. **These include moments where Alma's mother verbally and physically abuses her children, as well as quite a few violent moments once the marauders attack the village, and Pedro and Alma are forced to leave.)
Encanto (Tía Pepa POV) [G]
- Ongoing | by cloudy_encanto
Like Mariposa, this one's told from the POV of another character - being Pepa and her side of the family (and a few others, like Isabela, sprinkled in here and there.)
Because this one's told over the course of the movie, there are a lot of new scenes that feature the warm-colored family and what they were doing when the focus was elsewhere on Mirabel or somewhere else. There are several tooth-achingly sweet scenes that really show how much these characters love and care for one another, as well as several tense, angsty scenes that won't fail in tugging on your heartstrings.
Tremors [T]
- Ongoing | by Missilestorm ( @missilestorms )
A post-canon fic where Mirabel receives a gift after Casita's revival. The downside, however, is that this gift causes literal cracks to form. Bruno acts as a much-needed supporter and anchor for Mirabel, who must learn how to keep her new gift under control.
Each character's emotional struggles are shown incredibly well - particularly that of Mirabel and Bruno. It's heartbreaking to see how much anguish this gift causes Mirabel, especially considering how much she's encouraged her family to see their individual values that are separate from tying back to their gifts. On Bruno's end, it's sweet seeing how much he cares about Mirabel, recognizing her struggles with having a potentially dangerous gift, and consistently providing support or an extra hand to grab on to when it becomes too much. This sentiment is also applied to the family themselves, who also reach out to help in whatever ways they can.
Old Habits Die Hard [M] ***
- Complete | by Missilestorm
**TW for SA/Underage !! **
Set just after Casita’s reconstruction begins, Mirabel is sexually assaulted by a rogue townsperson. With Bruno acting as her main supporter and confidant, this fic explores the trauma of the event itself and how past, unresolved familial trauma bleeds into it.
This fic is honestly one of my favorites. I'd say it's somewhere in my top-five favorites out of all the stories I've read thus far. This story is just so raw and heartbreaking - which always hits harder when it's happening to characters you love. Not to mention, the author's handling of the subject matter is done with as much respect and care as I would hope a story with content matter like this should require. I especially love how each character (except for the villain mf) - particularly in the family - is written and how they react to the devastating events playing out around them. Despite this fic mostly centering around Bruno and Mirabel, the rest of the family have time to shine (some more than others), and man, just reading how much they care and want to help Mirabel is - just -gah! I love it, man.
I definitely recommend checking this one out if you're up to it.
we see how brave you've been [G]
- Complete | by hearth_goddess | (Mirabel & Antonio-centric)
Set in alternating pre-canon and canon, this fic is kind of a character study told through the different perspectives of the triplets. The scenes from the triplets' perspectives are of sweet moments involving Mirabel, Antonio, and their friendship (or short moments of just them with Mirabel or Antonio.) These scenes include moments set pre-canon, in-between, and during canon scenes.
One of my favorite gen pairings in the Encanto fandom is the one shared between Mirabel and Antonio. They share an incredibly sweet, wholesome, and powerful bond, despite the... admittedly little time they actually share together in the movie. But this fic definitely fills in the unseen gaps in their friendship, particularly in the moments preceding Antonio's ceremony. Seeing the triplets' reactions to the loving bond the two youngest grandchildren share is just so sweet and proves that, despite everything that led to the cracks, this family never stopped caring about one another.
Cold and Numb [T] ***
- Complete | by Amisaurus
**TW for Self-Harm and Suicide (Major Character Death) **
This one's just sad. Like - very, very sad. Set sometime after Antonio's gift ceremony (and presumably before the cracks appear), Mirabel struggles a lot with her self-worth, believing she isn't wanted in the slightest. Unfortunately, this isn't helped at all with how terribly Alma treats her in this fic and, despite good intentions, how her parents, sisters, and cousins are unable to understand not having a gift. This leads to a devastating moment in the first chapter, with the second chapter showing just how much this action hurt the family.
(With that said, there is a hopeful moment in the second chapter.)
When The Bell Tolls One [NOT RATED]
- Complete | by BudBrock (Alma-centric)
We got another Alma POV!!
Written a bit like 'A Christmas Carol,' this is an ‘Encanto watches Encanto AU,’ where Alma is shown and reacts to the events of the movie after the scene where she begs Pedro to “open [her] eyes.”
What can I say? I'm a sucker for POV character explorations like these, especially for mixed characters like Alma. Out of any Alma-centric fics, this one's definitely one of my favorites. In between, there are some funny moments reading Alma's reactions to certain scenes. However, there are also several moments where Alma is given a bird’s-eye view into the harm she'd unintentionally caused for her family.
Sound of Silence [T]
- Complete | by JilyFirecracker
Also set in an AU where Mirabel dies in Casita's collapse, with the fallout told from the perspectives of varying characters (Agustín, Pepa, Luisa, Camilo, Antonio, and Julieta.)
Definitely a bit of a sad one, especially during flashbacks of each character's core memories with Mirabel. But I really liked Julieta’s part, especially with the note it ends on.
Shining [G]
- Complete | by Sokkas_First_Fangirl ( @sokkas-first-fangirl )
Since the grandkids (not including Antonio) were young, Bruno and his sisters spent their summers at a lake in the Encanto. After Antonio's birth and Bruno’s return, the family makes a date to spend a day at that same lake for the first time in forever.
SWEET SUMMER FAMILY SHENANIGANS! The entire family is written so well, and there are many scenes that show how much stronger their shared bond has become. This is such a wonderful fic to read at a lake or beach on a hot summer day.
That's that for the recommended multi-chapter fics I've read so far. It goes without saying that all of these authors are so incredibly talented and absolutely deserve all the credit for their incredible stories.
Part II will be out shortly...

👑⚔️💙Warrior Princess Luisa💙⚔️👑
🐦Giving her a full body armour is tempting but I opt to give her only a few armour pieces since she's already super strong. I made sure that her design really fits her title as the warrior Princess.

I've got a very mixed relationship with TV Tropes. They banned me twice for no real reason, but I can't stop admiring their archive of tropes. This is what a work page for my "Encanto" fanfic, "Cracks in the future", would look like. (Some of these tropes also fit the canon characters in the movie.) This fanfic is set in an alternate universe, where Bruno has a wife (Míriam) and two kids (Teresa and Víctor).
A - L
Adaption Personality Change: Downplayed. There's a bit less emphasis in this fic on the weirder things, that Bruno will do in the movie. This is partly because most of it is told from Teresa's point of view, and she's a Daddy's Girl who won't find him strange. But it helps as well that he's happier in this fic than in most of the movie, and it makes his anxieties less pronounced and easier to control. That said, it is made clear that Bruno still manages to weird other people out. Abuelo Gonzalez (his father-in-law) actually wonders if he's "right in the head", and Pablo is forced to admit that he can see why people would find him "odd". But still, while Bruno is likely to cover his face with a hood if he's out in public, except if Míriam is there to pull it down, he will never wear a bucket over his head here. And he still has rats as pets long before it would be seen as normal, but his two alter egos Hernando and Jorge are never mentioned at all in this fic. And even him being superstitious is only mentioned exactly once.
Adaptional Angst Downgrade: Bruno is generally much happier in this fic than in most of the movie. It is true that he still deals with the pressure from his mother, and with a bunch of judgemental villagers. But it's noted that him meeting Míriam has improved his life a great deal. He never hid from his family for years either in this fic, since he could talk to his wife about his visions and had two kids to raise. Bruno and Míriam decided to simply not reveal what he saw in Mirabel's future. That made his mother furious with him, but he didn't have to become a hermit…
The Alcoholic: Tía Malena's husband Enrique is described as a violent drunk, and nobody in Malena's family likes him.
All Work vs All Play: This is what Míriam and Malena were in their younger days. Míriam preferred to stay at home and help their parents in their shop, but Malena would be out dating different guys instead.
Almighty Mum: When a bully's father is about to start attacking Bruno's door, Bruno can't do much except take his crying wife into his tower, and tell his kids to go to their rooms and hide there. And as soon as the man attacks the door, what saves the situation is that the door gives the attacker an electric shock, and that Abuela Madrigal arrives and tells him and his wife off. They try to make it look as if everything is Bruno's and Teresa's fault, but that doesn’t work at all. Abuela Madrigal only tells them to leave. And naturally, they must obey her. * As a matter of fact, people respect Abuela Madrigal so much that Teresa can use it. She learns that if Pablo's father keeps on slandering her and her father, her bringing up her abuela is the only way to make him stop.
Ascended Extra: Bruno has never hidden from his family for a decade in this fic, where he becomes the beloved father of protagonist Teresa. So he naturally has lots of screen time here, that he didn't have in the movie.
Awful Wedded Life: Tía Malena is clearly unhappy with her marriage to Enrique, who's described as a violent drunk who nobody in Malena's family likes. Also, Pablo reveals to Teresa that he wonders if his parents even still like each other. Both of these cases are in contrast to the three happy Madrigal marriages.
Bespectacled Cutie: Mirabel happens to be the only family member except for her father, who needs to wear glasses. She's also the only Madrigal kid to have no gift and struggles with that.
Beta Couple: Julieta and Pepa are already dating Agustín and Félix respectively, when Bruno and Míriam get together in the first chapter. It is later revealed in the second chapter, that Julieta and Pepa are planning triple dates. And later on in the story, the three couples have been married for 22 years and are still friends. * Dolores and Mariano become this to Teresa and Pablo by the end of the story. It is a case though, where the Betas get together later than the Official Couple, since everyone had just expected Mariano to propose to Isabela, while Dolores had hidden her feelings for him.
Big Sister Instinct: Teresa manages to save Víctor from a group of mean bullies, and it's revealed that Pepa used to do the same thing for Bruno.
Birth-Death Juxtaposition: Abuelo Pedro was killed during an attack right after his kids were born.
Bookworm: Bruno is hardly fond of being out among people in public, but he will still take his family on regular visits to the local library. It is noted that he was an avid reader as a young man. So now, it is important to him to encourage his kids to read. And it worked especially well with Víctor, who loves to go to the library. However, Teresa will borrow a book or two as well.
A Boy, A Girl, And A Baby Family: Dolores is 21 years old, Camilo is 15 years old and Antonio is the baby of the family at five years old.
Boyfriend-Blocking Dad: Bruno becomes a downplayed example when Teresa meets Pablo. Bruno is clearly uncomfortable with it, but he still is more nervous than aggressive. And he doesn’t have anything bad to say about Pablo, he is even able to apologize for acting weird, and acknowledge that Pablo is the first person who isn't a family member, who will respect him. As soon as Teresa asks her parents if she can bring Pablo to her room though (she promises that they'll only talk, but they would be alone together in her bedroom), Bruno has to warn him that he can't do anything "improper" to her.
Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: Downplayed with Bruno and Míriam as he is as gentle to her as she is to him. They were also both lonely before they met each other. However, Bruno was extremely unhappy until then. And he still has his anxieties and a bad reputation. Míriam managed to see that he wasn't dangerous though, even if she was the only girl in the Encanto to be willing to date him. Nowadays, it is her job to help him deal with whatever his problems are… * Pepa and Félix are a gender-inverted example. She is very hot-tempered and overly emotional, and it became his job to calm her down (and it's a very important job, since Pepa's mood controls the weather in the Encanto).
The Bully: A gang of them attack Víctor in an alley before Teresa can stop them. One of the bullies who insults their father gets what he deserves though… * It is revealed that Bruno also was attacked by bullies when he was younger, and that Pepa had to strike them in their heads with lightning.
Bumbling Dad: Mirabel's father, Agustín, is clumsy and always attracts bees, but he does love his wife and his daughters dearly and will do anything for them.
Canon Foreigner: Míriam, Malena, their parents, Teresa, Víctor, Leonor, Pablo, Pablo's family and Enrique are all characters, who don't appear in the movie.
Clashing Cousins: Teresa and Isabela are never able to get along. But then, Teresa suddenly has an epiphany that Isa almost accepted a loveless marriage. And it makes her feel sympathy for her at last…
Daddy's Girl: Teresa is very devoted to Bruno and won't let anybody insult him (and that is what most of the villagers do). She is very adamant about assuring that he's right about all of his visions. Her theory is that she got the same gift as him for this reason: Since she loves her father so much, she can't imagine having a different gift…
Demoted To Extra: This happened to several of the characters from the movie. Mirabel is Teresa's best friend and still an important character, but she's not the protagonist and will not appear in every chapter. And as much as Julieta, Pepa, Agustín, Félix, Camilo and Antonio are still there, they only get a few lines each. When it comes to more minor characters from the movie, like the kids who pestered Mirabel, Señora Pezmuerto and Señor Flores, they are still around as well, but they're not named and don't get any lines. Osvaldo Orozco Ortiz is an aversion though, as he is in the spotlight in one scene.
Disappeared Dad: Abuelo Pedro was forced to sacrifice his life to save all the other villagers, when they were attacked when his three kids had just been born. Not only did this traumatize his wife Alma (a k a Abuela Madrigal), but it's clear that Bruno (who was the only boy) also struggled a lot as he didn’t have a father. * Nobody has ever found out what happened to Teresa's cousin Leonor's father. He seems to have just disappeared one day. So he must have either been killed, or he found some way to leave the Encanto and abandon his pregnant fiancée.
Energetic and Soft-Spoken Duo: Mirabel and Dolores end up with this dynamic, when they're in the same scene together. Mirabel is very bubbly and talkative, Dolores is calmer and much quieter.
Fiery Redhead: Tía Pepa is red-headed and really hot-tempered. Her mood is what controls the weather in the Encanto.
Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Míriam had become the responsible sister, who preferred to stay at home and help her parents in their shop. Malena would be out dating different guys instead. Even as they've reached their middle age, Míriam is Happily Married and described by Teresa as a perfect wife and mother, while Malena is stuck with a violent drunk and is very jealous of her sister.
Freudian Trio: The three middle-aged women in the Casita form a trio like this. Pepa is really hot-tempered (the Id), Julieta is the calm and responsible sister (the Superego), while Míriam does her best to be the perfect wife and mother, but she can still start crying and lose her temper (the Ego). * This is true for their husbands as well. Félix is jolly and extroverted (the Id), Agustín is calm and more composed (the Superego), while Bruno is introverted, but will often show emotions like sadness and anxiety and shame (the Ego). * And naturally, this is true with the triplets too, with Pepa as a hot-tempered Id, Julieta as the calm Superego and Bruno as the introverted but nervous Ego.
Generation Xerox: Míriam got really scared the first time she saw Bruno's eyes glow green, and it made him plead with her to not leave him. Years later, this is repeated but gender-inverted with Teresa and Pablo. He is very startled when he sees her eyes glow green, and it makes her plead with him to not leave her. * Pablo's mother says that Teresa reminds her of her mother though. But later, Pablo reveals to Teresa that her eyes will look sad even when she's smiling. And that's a trait, that she's apparently inherited from her father. * Víctor is very much like Bruno, which has become notable to lots of people. Both of them are described as having a melancholy and nervous personality. Their pictures that hang next to Abuela Madrigal's door are nearly identical. Both of them are also into writing stories and theater and have rats as pets. * But a lot of this might go back one more generation. As soon as Pablo sees a painting of Abuelo Pedro, he says he thinks that Bruno looks a lot like him. Bruno and Víctor are also implied to have inherited their writing skills from him.
Generational Trauma: Abuela Madrigal watched her husband get killed during an attack. And it made her think that her kids and grandkids have to work hard, and produce new generations of Madrigals, so the magic and their protection from new attacks will stay strong. But it makes her do things like allowing the villagers to slander Bruno, pushing Mirabel to the side until she feels unloved, pressuring Isabela to think that she must enter a marriage that she doesn’t want, and Luisa to think that she has to work hard until she almost burns herself out. Teresa is mostly left alone until she meets Pablo. But then, Abuela Madrigal makes it clear that she wants great-grandkids. It is only after the Casita crumbles and the magic is lost, that a healing process can begin…
The Glorious War of Sisterly Rivalry: Míriam and Malena have a responsible vs irresponsible divide, and not a smart vs pretty divide (even if Míriam is the wiser out of the two, and Malena is described as having been the more popular sister). But still, Malena seems to see her whole life as just a competition with Míriam. Malena is very bitter and jealous since Míriam has a better life than her. * Mirabel and Isabela are unable to get along, and Mirabel and Teresa love to mock Isabela for being so haughty. But they can reconcile after Isabela reveals her secret: she was only going to marry Mariano to please Abuela Madrigal.
Glowing Eyes: This is what happens when Bruno or Teresa looks into the future. Their eyes will glow green.
Good Parents: Teresa and Víctor feel that Bruno and Míriam definitely are this. Teresa adores her father and admires her mother, just as much as Víctor adores his mother and admires his father.
Green Thumb: Isabela's power is that she can grow plants out of nowhere.
Happily Married: Teresa is glad that she grew up around three happy marriages (Bruno/Míriam, Pepa/Félix and Julieta/Agustín), but she can also describe her abuelos as being devoted to each other…
Hidden Depth: Even if Teresa didn't quite agree with Mirabel that Mariano was a "dumb hunk", she is very surprised when she learns that he's a poet.
Honorary Uncle: This story has an inversion. Normally, Teresa and Víctor would have called Tía Malena's husband "Tío Enrique". But nobody in Malena's family likes him because he's a violent drunk, so nobody has taught Teresa or Víctor to think of him as their tío. He is therefore referred to as just "Enrique".
Housewife: Zig-zagged with Míriam. She devotes a big chunk of her life to just taking care of her husband and her kids, and that is clearly what she wanted. However, she likes to run her family's shop too after she gets a chance to do so. Still, she is ready to stop working there after the magic returns.
I Am Not Pretty: Teresa is very surprised when Pablo actually calls her pretty. What she thought was that Isabela was the pretty one.
I See Dead People: Víctor's power is that he can both see and hear the spirits of the dead.
I Want Grandkids: Actually, Abuela Madrigal is pushing for great-grandkids now. This is very justified though since she believes that if the Encanto will survive, there must be new generations of Madrigals to keep the magic strong.
In-Series Nickname: "Mira" for Mirabel, "Isa" for Isabela and "Juli" for Julieta. Antonio and Pablo are called "Toñito" and "Pablito" by their respective mothers. * As a way more negative example, Bruno is known as "Bad Luck Bruno" among the villagers. It is even used by his brother-in-law Enrique, but he's not portrayed in a positive light anyway.
Jacob and Esau: Pablo is clearly his mother's favorite, and Pablo is convinced that his brother Manuel is their father's favorite.
The Jinx: Most of the villagers consider Bruno as one of these. They think that not only can he see the future, but he will make all kinds of bad things that he sees happen. Teresa is later accused of causing an elderly woman's death as well…
Like Mother, Unlike Daughter: Mirabel and Dolores swapped their mother's roles. Mirabel is bubblier than Julieta, while Dolores is quieter than Pepa.
The Lost Lenore: Abuelo Pedro was forced to sacrifice his life during a war. That is when the miracle was born, but it has truly traumatized his wife, Alma, who saw it happen in front of her eyes. As the years went by and she became best known as "Abuela Madrigal", she started to put a lot of pressure on her kids and grandkids. She thought that this was the only way to keep the magic strong, and it would give them protection from new attacks…

Note: This sat unfinished for months because my phone hates it when I try to write fan fiction during breaks in my college classes. I published it because it would not let me save it as a draft, and I wanted to throw myself off a bridge because it happened again. I appreciate you guys so much; thank you for your patience. Apologies for the double-publishing notifications in the same post. AGAIN. I also apologize for the long ass wait.

It was the night Mirabel was to receive her gift; you were sitting even though everyone was standing; everyone had insisted that you be in a chair even though it was Mirabel's big night. Everyone wanted to ensure you were comfortable enough to enjoy the evening with your niece and husband. Being pregnant had its advantages, but you still felt a little bad as your tiny niece walked by, a nervous expression on her face as she headed towards the magic door that awaited her at the top of the stairs. Your husband was just nervous; he had been very observant of Mirabel over the past few days, wanting to ensure his niece was okay and that the family would still love her no matter her gift.
Bruno gently placed his hand on your shoulder as Mirabel ascended the stairs, and you put your hand over his in return, trying to relax his nerves; however, when Mirabel placed her hand on that door, it was something no one would ever forget. The door faded away, and everyone was in shock; Mirabel had not received a gift; you still loved her, but this was going to be traumatic for the entire family, knowing how Abuela would treat her if anything negative were to happen to the house or family would happen. After the failed ceremony, abuela asked Bruno to make a prediction out of concern. In Bruno's cave, you watched as your husband made a prediction. When he showed it to you, you understood why Mirabel had no gift, but Abuela didn't. It turned into an argument between Bruno and his mother, and after that, he disappeared.
══ ❀•°❀°•❀ ══ ❀•°❀°•❀ ══ ❀•°❀°•❀ ══ ❀•°❀°•❀ ══
A month later, you gave birth to twins and girls. Luciana and Natalia looked identical to one parent each; Luci looked much like you, and Natalia looked much like her father. Your husband's disappearance hit you a lot harder that day, and you will never forget the feeling of being alone during something he should have been there for. Your family was kind enough to care for your babies when you couldn't, the exhaustion hitting your body along with heavy pangs of grief. The immense loneliness you felt looking at your daughters and knowing that they would never see their father, he wouldn't be there to receive their gifts, he wouldn't be there to witness their first steps, none of the milestones that he should be there for.
Having no gift made you feel useless to the family and that they were caring for you out of pity; while Julieta's food may have healed the physical damages of childbirth, the mental anguish of not having a husband and being gift-less in a family of magical gifts made you feel lonely. At least Augustin and Felix could share that sentiment, as will Mirabel when she is older. However, the loneliness would not fade for many years, and you would focus solely on your children as they grew, no matter how much it pained you that your husband was not there with you.
══ ❀•°❀°•❀ ══ ❀•°❀°•❀ ══ ❀•°❀°•❀ ══ ❀•°❀°•❀ ══
As time passed, Pepa had another son, and tonight was his gifting ceremony; Antonio is 5 years younger than your girls; everyone was excited to see a new gift arrive during the ceremony later in the evening while everyone was taking the time to prepare Casita for all the guests that would be joining us for the party. Luciana's gift was simple and really only helped during the winter and at night; she had the gift of fire; while Natalia could put people to sleep, she would often spend her evenings helping insomniacs and parents. You weren't excited about a new gift; it was just another reminder of your husband's disappearance since no one talked about him, and if they did, it was negative. You stayed in your room that evening, watching everyone enjoy themselves. After Bruno's disappearance, you were only in a few family photos by choice; it felt awkward.
You watched Mirabel guide Antonio to the door before stepping off, knowing how she felt about the gifting ceremonies since hers didn't pan out as planned. You also watched her leave the celebrations with a solemn look on her face. You understood why she was upset; she didn't feel like she belonged. You watched a piece of the shingling fall from Casita, and as Mirabel picked it up, she sliced her hand. You frowned; the house falling apart wasn't normal, but even if that worried you, there was the feeling that you knew Mirabel would figure out how to fix it, and even if she couldn't, she'd still do her best to help her family because she loves them just as much as you do.
══ ❀•°❀°•❀ ══ ❀•°❀°•❀ ══ ❀•°❀°•❀ ══ ❀•°❀°•❀ ══
Days after the ceremony, you're rushing your daughters out of a collapsing casita, protecting them with your body as you ran with them after Mirabel and Abuela had a huge fight. You hugged your girls tightly as Casita collapsed; as the dust settled, you slowly let go, stood up, and ran in, worried about your niece. You weren't the only one, but as you dug through, everyone began to worry. "MIRABEL!!!" The shouts of the family echoed in the surrounding jungle; you sat to take a break and noticed Abuela was nowhere to be seen. At that point, you figured Abuela knew exactly where Mirabel had wandered off to, and you suddenly felt relief knowing that your niece would be okay.
You picked up your head at the sound of a horse galloping and smiled brightly with the rest of your family as Mirabel and Abuela returned, seeming to have mended their relationship. You weren't expecting to see your husband sitting behind them nervously. As they got off, he first apologized to his sisters. When you heard Dolores say that he never actually left, you began to tear up and cover your mouth as he approached you, the expression on his face showing deep regret, looking for forgiveness.
"Y/n, Amor, I don't think there is anything that I could say; not even a sorry could replace the time you spent alone because I decided to hide from the family; I didn't get to hug my daughters when they took their first steps nor did I get to congratulate their gifts with everyone, and I should have been their next to you the entire time. Even if I never stopped loving you, you still had to go through everything alone, and no amount of words could fix that. Nothing I say will change the fact that my daughters never got to know their father; I can only begin to dream for your forgiveness, and I understand if you are still mad at me." Tears welled in your eyes as Bruno spoke. You had missed him so much and were glad he was back; you were happy that your daughters could finally meet their father. You hugged him tightly and began crying from happiness and relief.
Your daughters soon noticed that you were crying and came over to comfort you, only to be confused that you were hugging a man who looked like Abuela and Tia Julieta. You smiled softly at your daughters and introduced them to their father. "Natalia, Luci, this is Bruno Madrigal; he's your father." In an instant, their eyes lit up like light bulbs, and they tackled his legs, asking an obnoxious amount of questions, making you smile as you sneaked up behind them to pick them up and give them a big up, with Bruno joining in.
After the brief reunion, everyone began to work; there was no point in catching up if there was no house to catch up in. Everyone chipped in to rebuild Casita, and in time, the house was rebuilt; Dolores finally got to talk to Mariano, Isabella, and Mirabel got along, and the romance between you and Bruno was quickly rekindled. As Mirabel placed the doorknob, the house lit up, and the magic returned Casitato Casita, greeting everyone warmly as everyone happily celebrated. Everyone squeezed in for a family photo, and you smiled at Bruno so brightly that it was like you were never separated. "I love you, Bruno Madrigal." You kissed him softly, and he kissed back with care and love." And I love you, Y/n Madrigal."
End

Twins? You're lying, where has he been all my life then?
Summary: For ten entire years Camilo Madrigal was virtually the only guy in the family, he just simply doesn't know it could've been someone else in his shoes until Casita falls; enter Carlos Madrigal, the forgotten, giftless heir to Pepas side of the family.
Warnings: Minute gore, check tags for further warnings.
Authors Note: I figured out what the absolute mad lads of the Encanto fandom did with the concept arts for characters and decided to write a fic about it, and @sobredunia you're being subjected to Camilo propoganda, reblogs are appreciated.
Carlos Madrigal has been living in Casitas walls since before he could walk, Bruno popping in when he turned five was a neat surprise for him. He has his half of the Casitas walls, Bruno has his portion, at least, that was the idea until the both of them realized it'd be wiser to share the kitchen place. He's sure his simple personality makes Bruno want to strangle him, but at the same time, it brings him a little bit of joy to watch his face light up in agitation as he teases relentlessly.
It was a quaint ten years, passed by faster than he could keep track of, but eventually, Bruno refused to let Carlos enter his parts of Casitas walls; he agreed to bring him food after he had moved to a different spot. And he did move, completely out of spite though, taking his worn and restitched red ruana with him, he never talked to Bruno much after that, he was nine when that happened. So, doing a brief count, he's spent most of his life alone, afraid and stuck in the darkness of Casitas walls without knowing anyway out.
He doesn't even know if he really is a Madrigal, or if he's just some eldritch spawn living in the walls birthed of dust and magic residue alike, he just knows that he is Carlos, and he lives 'with' Bruno. He knows he has no gift and that all Madrigals do, but Bruno refuses to tell him much more about the rest of his family in general, nothing that goes much further into detail. And it's driving Carlos up the walls because he's trapped between the outside world and the family Madrigal and he doesn't know where he belongs.
That all changed when Casitas walls came crumbling down around him and he was caught in the blast, the families discord finally taking its toll. He was distantly awake for most of that, distantly aware no one heard him scream for help, nor the sickening crunch of bones, vaguely knowing no one would hear him whine in agony with the magic gone. That didn't stop him from sobbing as he tried to stay awake, as he tried to call out for anybody in hopes that he could garner attention before the blood oozing from his shoulder caused him to faint.
Carlos didn't seen manage though, with one final plead of 'help,' he passed out, slumped between chunks of Casitas walls. He didn't know that Camilo was the first to start traversing the further edges of the damage, the first to find Carlos and be smothered in shock. The freeze response was short lived when he saw the blood, rushing over to start heaving up slabs of his home to try and unearth the unrecognizable boy. Although, Camilo wasn't sure that he liked what he saw when he picked up the boy who grimaced in his sleep, it was like looking in a mirror.
Camilo simply cradled the boy in his arms as he walked back through the rummage, finding everyone mourning in their own way, some falling for Mirabel. He tried to stay out of view, he really did, placing down the still breathing and oozing body against a chunk of land before calling for Pepa and Julieta; they both came running. He simply stood and stared when they arrived, Pepa gasping in shock and Julieta in horror at the injury, she was quick to pull out a vial, Pepa held out a hand to stop her which confused Camilo deeply.
"Pepa, let me help him," Julieta said sternly, Pepa begrudgingly lowered her hand to let Julieta through.
"Mamà, do you know that guy?" Camilo asked, gesturing vaguely to a still passed out Carlos who was being force-fed a vial of juice in his sleep, no response as his wound mended itself.
"I'll explain when he wakes up," Pepa said quietly, stroking her braid out of reflex even though her powers had been disabled with the fall of Casita.
Soon enough Julieta was standing with a hand on her sisters shoulder, watching and hoping that Carlos would come through, Camilo stuck in shock. Who was this guy? A replacement? Shared hallucination? Culmination of the families turmoil? He didn't know and it was driving him mad, this kid could hold all the secrets even Dolores is unaware and he's laying limp on the ground in a pool of his own blood. He starts to come too soon enough and Camilo practically bounds over to help him up, only to get shrugged off with a sharp 'Get off!' he reluctantly pilled away afterwards.
"Carlos…" Pepa murmured softly, Camilo almost didn't catch it, but perked up before throwing an accusation.
"You do know him! Explain!" Camilo practically demanded of his mother, now with nothing to immediately fear.
"Easy now, don't blow a gasket faker," Carlos said, tone only semi-sarcastic, he got a glare from Camilo, he smirked in response.
"Carlos, this is Camilo, Camilo, this is Carlos," Pepa said, getting introductions done with swiftly, she took a shaming breath, "he is your twin brother."
"Twin? You're lying, if he's my twin then wheres he been all my life?" Camilo demanded, his confusion inly rising and it showed very clearly, Carlos experiencing something familiar but doing a much better job of hiding it.
"Living in the walls," Carlos said matter-of-factly, Pepa nodded when her first son turned with a questioning glance.
"How could you do that?! I went alone for ten whole years as the only guy in family Madrigal because you put Carlos in the walls?" Camilo asked, his rage only simmering after the initial spill over, Pepa struggled for words.
"In the last fifteen years a lot has changed, when you were born this village had a superstitious belief that if you had twins the second one was an unholy spirit, not wanting to truly get rid of Carlos, Pepa simply trusted that he would last, she spent her time in the walls with him until he was four, always sliding food through the cracks for him but never mentioning him," Julieta explained, Pepa nodded along confirming every word said, "it was pure chance that Camilo was born mere minutes sooner than Carlos."
"What you're saying is that I could've been in the walls, that I got lucky and Carlos took the hit for me without even knowing he had a brother?" Camilo asked, two nods from his mamà and his tìa, before he could continue Carlos spoke up.
"So, does this mean I'm not some eldritch horror terror spawned in from all the families residual magic and arguments alike?" Carlos asked, he got a no from Pepa.
"More importantly, is he going to get to live with us now that the superstitions are gone? Now that I know he exists?" Camilo asked as Carlos got up too his feet, a mere inch taller than Camilo.
"We'll have to talk it over with the rest of the adults, Camilo," Julieta said before leading Pepa away, leaving just Camilo and Carlos to their own devices.
They simply stood and stared at each for a few solid minutes of silence, unable to speak, both admittedly uncomfortable being alone, knowing the roles could've been swapped. Camilo was visibly uncomfortable, fidgeting a little bit and the such while Carlos held it purely inside, refusing to give any show of emotional existence. But that didn't stop Camilo from speaking up first despite how tense it was the rubble of Casitas once stable walls.
"So, did you ever get your gift?" Camilo asked, Carlos raised a brow.
"No, I couldn't've, I was living in the walls, everyone knows you only get a gift with a door, idiot," Carlos said, dropping back down on the ground, gripping the hem of his ruana, Camilo sat opposite to him, orange and red parallels.
"Right, what did you even eat in there, Carlos?" Camilo asked, giving a crooked smile, trying so desperately to keep a loose string of conversation in the air so it wouldn't fall back into that awkward silence again.
"Arepa crumbs, and whatever my housemate surrendered, Pepa stopped sneaking me food after I turned five, which is around when Bruno came to live in the walls with me," Carlos explained as though it was common knowledge that Bruno was living in the walls despite the fact Bruno not being dead was still unknown, Camilos eyes widened.
"Bruno lives in the walls?!" Camilo practically exclaimed, getting shot with a glare that had him covering his mouth for being loud.
"Lived in the walls, yes, but given Casitas state, I don't think he'll be living in the walls anymore, idiot," Carlos stated, his unrelenting glare easing just a little bit, this was the first person he's met outside of Casitas literal walls, he needs to stay chill if he wants to be accepted, does he want to be accepted if everyone is like this? He's not sure.
"On another note, I have a name Carlos," Camilo said, Carlos gave a false face of shock.
"Really? I had no clue, what is it, mouse," Carlos said in a weak attempt to insult Camilo, unaware that 'mouse' doesn't have negative connotations he grew up thinking it did due to rat influence.
"It's Camilo, goat," Camilo muttered, already feeling a little bit discouraged, over half of his life he's wanted a brother and now that he has one, other than Antonio, he's really wishing he didn't; he hoped his insult came across clear, instead he was greeted with a pause.
"Whats a goat?" Carlos asked quietly, living in a wall and refusing to interact with your one housemate stifled his knowledge, and his speech ability as well, it sounded a bit disjointed, Camilo had to refrain from laughing at the response.
"You don't know what a goat is?" Camilo asked, fragments of snickers slipped into his voice here and there, he saw the red rise on his twins face.
"Shut up! I've been living in the walls for my entire life!" Carlos exclaimed, leaping from his spot to try and tackle Camilo who effortlessly rolled out of the way, a growl erupted from Carlos chest.
"Use my name and I'll tell you," Camilo said, leaning over Carlos face with a smirk, he got pushed away.
"Fine, Camilo, whats a goat?" Carlos said, spitting Camilos name with venom, Camilo grinned, progress, maybe a friendship or a brotherhood of any form could be forged with this previously unknown Madrigal.
"A goat is like a donkey, except it eats garbage and screams at you sometimes, they're fun," Camilo said, Carlos gave a look of agitation at the previous comparison, "and a mouse is like a rat but a lot cuter and cuddlier, its a compliment."
"And that's what living in a wall does to you, fuck," Carlos said, another thing years of living a wall does to you, prevents you from building a filter because you've only ever heard muffled conversations through walls full of cracks.
"Preach, never lived in a wall, but trust me, living with six girls will change you on a metaphysical level," Camilo said, Carlos raised a brow, Camilo gestured vaguely to the eye shadow, if he could he would gesture to how he speaks and acts in general.
"Glad I didn't have to endure that," Carlos said with a chortle, his grin undeniable.
"Glad I didn't have to live off arepa crumbs, man, you're going to love living in the Casita, my, our Tía Julieta makes the best food," Camilo said, pausing to correct himself halfway through, remembering that this was his twin, his missing half in a sense, the balance he never had in a house of six girls.
"I'll take your word for it, do you think Bruno died in the collapse?" Carlos asked as he sat up a bit, propping himself on his elbows, Camilo shrugged.
"If he could live in the walls for ten years, he'll be fine, probably," Camilo said, he laid down on the ground, hands behind his head, eyes closed, "I don't mind just talking for a little bit."
"That would be... Fine, hope you're up to teaching me about life outside the walls though," Carlos said, Camilo grinned, propping himself up on his shoulders.
"Okay, we have a lot to talk about bro," Camilo started with, letting himself ramble to his twin, Carlos nodded along intently, absorbing the information with ease.
Maybe he could do fine if everyone outside the walls was like Camilo.

You can call me Lotty , both she/her and they/them pronouns are fine with me and my hobbies include mostly drawing silly stuff related to my favorite fictional characters and my original characters/self inserts ( they kinda fall in the middle of these two categories , some are more similar to me than others but they’re all a way to insert myself in my favorite stories :]👍) ;
I’m a huge fan of anything animated , especially independent projects on YouTube like Monkey Wrench , Lackadaisy , Murder Drones , Atlas and the Stars , TADC eccetera :)
There’s also a variety of games I like , such as Hollow Knight , Night in the Woods , Ori and the Blind Forest and many more !

⋆ ★ ART REQUESTS
- Current status : CLOSED , with an exception for my closer moots { I tend to get anxious about receiving too many requests and becoming too overwhelmed to draw them all : this has happened before in other occasions and it was a pretty stressful time for me , so that’s the only reason why I’m putting this limit 👍}
{ also I’m more likely to draw self shipping/oc x canon related ships related requests , it’s kinda my thing at this point ^^” }
{ oh - and I would prefer not receiving anything heavily nsfw ( though mildly suggestive elements are okay-ish , depends on what the request is about ) : I’m not able to draw that kind of thing anyway because of my less-than-great anatomy , so that’s a no-no :T }
╰┈➤ ART TRADES
-Current status : OPEN-ish { not always able to accept due to irl matters keeping me busy , it really depends on the time }

⋆ ★ RULES ( very important )
I’m not a fan of pro-shipping and all things related to it since it makes me pretty uncomfortable , so if you’re into that I’d rather have you block me and not interact with my profile , or the other way around . Also needless to say , but if you’re homophobic or racist in any way you definitely aren’t welcome here .
I get incredibly anxious when receiving private messages without warning , so please just ask me beforehand weather or not I’m down to chat either in my inbox or my blogs , or just say something other than just “hi” in the message ! Overall , private messages as a whole just make me nervous , I prefer not using them unless it’s absolutely necessary ( plus I almost never check them , so I’m not the best at keeping the conversation interesting … I’m the most awkward human on the planet when it comes to that stuff .-. )
I can find myself too busy to hang here at times , so if it takes me a while to respond it’s definitely not because I have something against you in any way : this isn’t an excuse , but I do also suffer from adhd , so it’s possible for me to forget about some stuff while struggling to focus on everything else … yeah ;C;
Some of my posts may include occasional swearing sometimes : I keep it to a minimum , but I thought it would be good to bring this up in case anyone is uncomfortable with it .
If by chance I ever happen to draw something mildly suggestive ( I’m never going to do anything fully NSFW tho !! ) , I’ll always be sure to put a warning at the start of the blog 👍
( also this profile’s theme might change from time to time based on which character I’m currently obsessing over ://] ❤️ )

I know I've only been here since like February, but I still find it hard to understand the Viv hate (not liking her is one thing, I'm talking about the actual haters).
Obviously she's not perfect, but no human is, and most complaints I see about her all boil down to either "mistakes she's made in the past and learned from/apologized for" or "Viv writing about something in fiction is the same thing as her doing it in reality" and they wanna make that everyone's problem for some reason instead of learning the difference between fiction and reality like a normal person.
As someone who's had/has to suffer through showrunners like Chris Sonnenburg (Tangled The Series) and Thomas Astruc (Miraculous) who are actual misogynistic pieces of shit assholes who happily throw their own team and fans (including hardcore fans who don't even hate on their shows) under the bus as long as it makes them "look good" (never works, but they still keep doing it), Viv has been a literal walk in the park in comparison.
I mean, as an example, Viv loves not only supporting the artists on her own team, but also artists working on completely other projects not related to her at all, that showrunners like CS and TA would've seen as "competition" (anyone remember the temper tantrum TA threw just because of how much praise Encanto was getting? Or heck, when the movie of his own franchise was getting praise, but because he didn't work on it himself, obviously that meant it couldn't be good... anyway, you get my point).
(Also, don't get me started on the time CS was literally bullying young fans of his show for "enjoying it wrong" to the point he got kicked out of the fan Discord server.)
Viv is here to spread the beauty of art and animation, including her own. CS and TA are/were only here to be "the best", happily stepping on anyone who'd come in their way. So, excuse me for prefering a showrunner like Viv.

M - W
Mama Bear: Míriam and Pepa had a big brawl one time, when Camilo hit Víctor in the stomach with a football. Míriam began to yell at Camilo for "hurting" Víctor, and Pepa arrived to defend her son and almost caused a storm.
Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: Downplayed as Teresa isn't masculine otherwise, but if someone bullies her brother or insults her father, she will become mad and want to fight, while Víctor is more likely to do nothing except start to cry. * It's implied that Bruno and Pepa were like this as well when they were younger. Pepa is hardly that masculine otherwise either, but she's got a terrible temper. And it's revealed that years ago, she used to hit Bruno's bullies with lightning. And as for him, he seems to have simply had to wait for his sister to save him.
The Medic: Julieta's power is that she can heal people with her cooking.
Momma's Boy: Bruno was very controlled by his mother when he was younger, and he still has to look into people's futures because she says so. He was only able to ever stand up to her after he got married, but he still chooses his battles. * Víctor prefers to let his mother Míriam treat his wounds when he's attacked, despite the fact that his aunt Julieta has a healing power. And he will let Míriam pamper him because he can't say no to her. But he's a rare case of this trope, who is lucky enough to have a father and to have a good relationship with him. * And also, both Pablo and Mariano are shown to be very close to their mothers. And Teresa and Dolores agree that it's a good quality.
Muggle Born of Mages: While it's true that her father has no magic in his family, Mirabel is the first kid in two generations of her mother's family to have no "gift".
Multigenerational Household: Teresa and Víctor and their parents share a house with the following relatives: a grandmother, two aunts, their husbands, and even six cousins. When they lose the Casita, they have to go live with their maternal grandparents instead. But it makes them qualify for this trope again.
My Beloved Smother: As a single mother with war trauma, Abuela Madrigal has been a controlling force in the lives of her three children. She's pleased to know that they all became Happily Married. But now, it is time to push the grandkids into marriage! She becomes a lot better after the Casita crumbles though. * Míriam is dangerously close to being this too as she's very protective of Víctor. This is kind of justified by how often he has fainted though. And luckily, Bruno is good at guiding him without pampering him. Míriam is notably less smothering towards Teresa, except that she shows a bit of concern when she meets Pablo. But that is because Míriam's sister is stuck in a bad marriage, and she's afraid of seeing Teresa end up in a similar situation…
Obnoxious In-Laws: Downplayed with Abuelo Gonzalez, Bruno's father-in-law. He told Abuela Gonzalez once that he wondered if Bruno is "right in the head", and he doesn’t get how he can have rats as pets as he sees them as vermin. Bruno decides to simply do what he can to never ever anger his father-in-law. And usually, that is good enough to keep Abuelo Gonzalez satisfied. However, Teresa is fully aware that her father and her abuelo have a strained relationship. * There's a bit of tension between Míriam and Abuela Madrigal too, since Míriam once insisted that Víctor was too young to work. He was only five years old then, but the thought that a magic gift wouldn't be used really scared Abuela Madrigal. This ended with a big brawl. And even though they mostly just let each other be after that, Míriam just knew that she could only defy Abuela Madrigal once.
Official Couple: Bruno and Míriam are the main couple in the first two chapters. But later in the story, Teresa and Pablo are this instead.
Only Friend: Teresa and Mirabel are close despite an age difference of six years. And when Teresa meets Pablo, Mirabel is very afraid that she will be all alone. * Later, Pablo refers to Mariano as his only friend. And still, they had only started to talk to each other after Pablo started dating Teresa.
Personal Rainclowd: Pepa will often get one if she gets upset about something. But if she's really upset, it is even possible for her to cause a hurricance or make it snow.
Power Incontinence: It is very easy for the Madrigals to lose control of their gifts. Teresa and Bruno can see people's futures by accident if they get angry, Pepa is known to cause a storm if she's upset, Isabela even hurts Mariano with a plant.
The Quiet One: Dolores is clearly the least talkative one out of the Madrigals. Teresa found it hard to even talk to her until they both found a boyfriend, so they could talk about that and have double dates. * Leonor is very quiet too and just works in the shop without causing any trouble. But she and Teresa have one important conversation about their father figures, which is more than enough to clue Teresa in on that Leonor hides a lot of pain.
Raised By Grandparents: This happened to Teresa's cousin Leonor, who had to live with Abuelo and Abuela Gonzalez. Her mother had to leave her with them, because she married a violent drunk and wanted to keep her daughter from him.
Red Oni, Blue Oni: Pepa is very emotional and capricious (red), Julieta is calm and responsible (blue). * Míriam is clearly more introverted and responsible (blue) than her flighty sister Malena (red). * Agustín is calm and composed (blue), Félix is jolly and extroverted (red). * Mirabel is bubbly and talkative (red), Dolores is calmer and quiet (blue). * Camilo is extroverted and loves to entertain people (red), while Víctor is introverted and prefers to stay at home and read (blue). * Camilo is furthermore an extroverted red to either of his siblings, as Dolores and Antonio are introverted blues.
Seers: Bruno and Teresa can look into the future. But it becomes a burden when people accuse them of causing their bad luck…
Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: Pablo seems to have been more fragile than his brother Manuel, who managed to become a strong carpenter like their father.
Settle For Sibling: Even though Isabela and Dolores are cousins and not sisters, they end up in a variant of this trope. Everybody seems to just expect Mariano to propose to Isabela, but she's not interested and is only agreeing to it to please Abuela Madrigal. Dolores happens to be in love with Mariano though, but she won't say anything about it until Teresa has a vision about them. But in the end, Isabela is free to not agree to a loveless marriage. And it leaves Dolores free to date Mariano…
Sibling Yin-Yang: Pepa is hot-tempered and emotional, Julieta is calmer and more responsible. Bruno is pretty much a middle ground between his sisters, being introverted but still very likely to show emotions like anxiety and shame. * Míriam is very responsible and more introverted, Malena is very flighty and more extroverted. * Isabela is seen as the family beauty and a "perfect princess", Luisa is very tall and strong and muscular, and Mirabel is neither too girly-girly nor too tomboyish, but she's looking for her purpose in the family, where she's the only kid who has has no magic gift. * Dolores is very calm and quiet, Camilo is very mischievous and an entertainer, and Antonio has animal friends, but he will be introverted around people. * Pablo has never been as strong or as good at carpentry as his brother Manuel, but he turns out to be less judgemental than most of his family as well.
Sickeningly Sweethearts: Míriam is fond of hugging and kissing Bruno in public, even if people are annoyed by it. Bruno and Míriam can also be lovey-dovey in front of their kids, and that is after twenty-two years of marriage.
Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Míriam quickly knew that despite his terrible reputation among the villagers, Bruno was notably nicer than her sister's suitors. And she also saw that Agustín and Félix were good for Julieta and Pepa. * And in the following generation, Pablo is truly good for Teresa. He is the only villager to feel bad about not doing anything, when a group of bullies had attacked Víctor, or to show some skepticism about all the terrible rumors about Bruno, and even to accept that rats can be pets. Likewise, Dolores fell in love with Mariano because of his Nice Guy qualities.
So Proud of You: Bruno is very good at telling Víctor that he's so proud of him. But as Teresa has been seen as stronger and her parents focus more on Víctor, she has never been told that. When she's able to replicate one of her father's visions though, Bruno finally does tell her that he is proud of her.
Speaks Fluent Animal: Antonio's power is that he communicates with animals.
Super Hearing: Dolores's power is that she can hear everything in the Encanto.
Supreme Chef: Julieta's power is that she can heal people with her cooking.
Tomboy and Girly-Girl: Tall and muscular Luisa is strong enough to lift up the village church. Isabela is known as the family beauty and a "perfect princess". But it changes after Isabela has a make-over…
Town Girls: Isabela is seen as a great beauty and a "perfect princess" (femme). Luisa is tall and strong and muscular (butch). Mirabel is between them being neither that girly-girly nor that tomboyish (neither).
Understanding Boyfriend: If a guy wants to date one of the magic Madrigal girls, he has to be this. Teresa is even astonished by how Pablo is almost too good to be true, but she can find comfort in that he and Mariano are there for each other.
Unusual Pets for Unusual People: Bruno and Víctor keep rats as pets, which is seen as very strange and adds to their bad reputation. Teresa grosses a group of girls out by picking up a rat. And even Abuelo Gonzalez calls rats "vermin", when Víctor has three of them in a cage when they must stay with their abuelos. That leads to a bit of conflict as Bruno of course will support his son about this…
Violently Protective Wife: Downplayed as Míriam doesn’t actually use violence, but all the villagers know that she will chase them away from Bruno. Justified as looking into the future for too long gives him migraines, and it could even make him faint...
Weather Manipulation: Pepa's mood is what decides the weather in the Encanto. So you will have good weather if she's happy and bad weather if she's unhappy.
World's Strongest Woman: Luisa's power is her super strength.

Me, Myself and I (she's not real, it's not true)
Summary: Your gift is a curse, is it even yours? Or is it simply being passed from person to person, you don't even know what you like anymore; just a curly haired teen? A giddy child? A confused girl who can't get out? In essence, they're all you, everyone is.
Warnings: Identity Crisis, check tags for further warnings.
Authors Note: Watched Encanto again, forgot how much angst potential was packed into this boy, convinced to actually write it by @sobredunia who has the magic touch when it comes to making me write shit, and the direction I was going with the gender bit was less on the transgender end of the spectrum, but more of the, what you could've been end of the spectrum, reblogs are always appreciated.
You look in a mirror, you don't know what you see.
You don't know who you see, every morning it's different, 'me myself and I' the therapist said; the therapist is wrong.
You're not her, you're not it- you're not Mira, you're not Camilo, you are Camilo, but Camilo is not needed, like Mira.
You aren't needed, Abuela is needed, Pepa is needed, Julieta is needed, even Bruno is needed; but you aren't, who you can become is what's really needed. You'll be given a list of everyone elses chores, and you'll do them under the guise it really is Mira playing with the neighbor kids, it really is Julieta washing the dishes even though it never is.
It's you, it's you, it always has been you. Has it really?
Felix gives you chores, you, she, it, 'me, myself and I,' one of whatever exists within will do it, but all of it is you, and none of her is you; you've lost yourself. If yourself even exists underneath the never ending life of lies you uphold for The Family Madrigal, for The Encanto and for the love and respect of those you hold so dearly despite knowing they only need you for what you can be- not for what you are.
And each morning you know it to be truer and truer as you look in the mirrors, none of them reflect you anymore, they only reflect what you're supposed to be, meant to mimic. The local seamstress, a mother in need, anyone and everyone but you, and then there are faces you don't recognize from the town, and faces that aren't human.
You see yourself, eyes emerald, hair curly, frame thin, everything so close to the same except for the fact you aren't wearing what you always do; you're wearing a dress that you've memorized. The top piece is white, the sleeves are short, the waist has a sash with chameleon sigils, the skirt is sunflower yellow, and you look so good in that dress, but she isn't you (Is she, was she supposed to be?). In another mirror you see a distorted child, crouching down to be at eye level, pressing hands together, knowing it is you, it was you, knowing it could still be you; grinning and failing the family so blissfully. You tell the child everything will be fine, nothing will go wrong and too never stop smiling despite knowing that child has a future that will change it forever for the worse- and the child can only stare at you, knowing its fate despite being so young.
This room, this cell, and this prison is all yours, everyone of the Family Madrigal resides in it, its everyones all at once, yet Casita doesn't treat them like prisoners. You know its not on purpose, you know your gift reflects in your room, you're far too aware of the fact that no matter how many mirrors you smash you're only making more. Shards of broken glass swept up as glass reforms, pulls together, lets you to see into your soul and to see nothing left but a hollow vessel that's bursting at the seams with how much of nothing fills it. It's just you, whatever components of what you really are left over, that's what there is, the girl, the child and you, she's not real, it isn't the truth.
You, Camilo Madrigal, the shapeshifter who makes everyone smile, have an empty purpose because they don't want you, and you know it chips at your self esteem every time you think that, but its true, its true, its true. Nobody needs Camilo, they need everyone but you, you're everyone but Camilo at this point, you fill roles when they can't be there to do it themselves.
'Me, myself and I,' you'll never know them, not if they never existed in a way you could understand.
You're just a chameleon, but a chameleon knows itself.
---
Waking up, you find yourself not even bothering to glance in the mirrors, none of them show what you think is you, nor will they ever because you don't exist. Why should you exist if no one wants you around, you're just a fun-house mirror that shows everyone what they want to see, and no one wants to see you anymore.
Breakfast is slow, you stay quiet, giving your two cents here and there like you always do, dread sinking in even further because breakfast is almost over and you haven't asked you of anything. You refrain from grabbing seconds, you'll get in trouble if you do that, you simply stay seated and wait for Abuela to give you a chore as she lists off tasks for everyone, skipping over you. Luisas dealing with the donkeys, Isabella has to help a farmer, Mirabel is babysitting a group of kids, and you're left without anything to do.
"Abuela?" You pipe up, tone firm, tone sharp, tone unwavering, you've become used to picking and choosing your favorite parts of everyones voices.
"Yes Camilo?" Abuela asked, turning to you.
"What about my job?" You ask, fork migrating to Dolores plate, she doesn't seem to notice as you nab some of her food.
"You don't have one today, theirs nothing the town needs from you right now," Abuela answered with, cracks in your vessel spread as she confirmed your fears, you refrained from tearing up.
"Okay, what should I do than?" You ask, unable to help the pleading tone in your voice, guidance direction, you don't know much of what you're supposed to do when theirs nothing your gift can do for you, for everyone else.
"You should help Bruno for the day," Dolores said, perfectly repressing her expressions, the Madrigal in question perked up at the mention of his name.
"Lovely idea, Dolores," Abuela said, smiling softly as she stood, everyone else following suite and filtering out of Casita, Bruno swift in his attempt to leave, you followed like an orphan duckling, still unaware of who Bruno needed for the job.
And so you followed Bruno, patiently waiting for instruction as you scaled stair after stair, he was simply mumbling to himself. The top of the stairs was to say the least, the most welcoming sight of the week, you took a seat. It was weird, doing anything and being yourself, whatever part of yourself you liked to reflect, and you weren't sure if you liked it.
"So, Tío Bruno, who do you need on the job?" You asked, stretching out your arms a little bit.
"Ah, you followed me up here, of course you did, I don't need help, but you can help if you want to," Bruno said, you quirked a brow.
"Okay, but, who do you want on the job?" You asked again, changing your words ever so slightly, this man, one generation before you, surely understood the question.
"I want you too help me drain my Vision Cave of sand so I have somewhere to give visions," Bruno said again, adding more information, you still didn't understand it entirely.
"Right, so... Luisa?" You asked, shifting your form to your older cousin Luisa, Bruno groaned.
"No, guess again," Bruno said, you shifted to Mira, he shook his head, Isabella, he shook his head, Dolores or Tonito, two shakes of the head, you give up.
"Just tell me who you want help from so I can help," you practically begged, unable to just trust that anyone out there could want your help, not someone elses.
"Come back once you figure it out, and bring a broom, there is a lot of sand up here," Bruno said, pivoting on one foot before heading further into the cave, his rats following close in line, leaving you alone, "talk to Julieta, she might be able to help."
You tried to stutter out a response, but nothing wanted to come out no matter whose voice you picked. So stubbornly, you turned to leave, pivoting on foot like Bruno, huffing a bit as you started on your trek back down all those fucking stairs.
---
You're panting when you make it to the kitchen, finding your Tía Julieta prepping a meal, she takes note of your existence by calling you over. You follow, gripping the edge of the counter for support, legs numb and shaking, a bruise here and there from when you tripped, a small cut on your face. Julieta hands you an arepa, fresh off the heat, you take it gratefully, trying to eat slowly despite how tempted you are to just wolf it down; be polite, don't be crass, you wipe your hands down on a stray towel.
"Aren't you working with Bruno, sobrino?" Julieta asked, turning to face the food on the counter, back to prep work, but you know she's at least half listening.
"He sent me off when I couldn't guess who he needed for the job, I have to bring him a broom soon," you explained, nibbling away at the morsel in your hands, delicious as always, "he said you might be able to help me figure it out."
"I don't know how much help I can be, but I'll try sobrino," Julieta said, flipping a few of the arepas on the stove before turning to you.
"He just kept saying that he wanted my help, not someone elses, which is not only estúpido, but confusing, no one wants my help, they just want copies," you explained, hoping that Julieta could even attempt to get it, to make sense of what Bruno was saying, she didn't respond right away.
"Well, Camilo, have you considered he could actually want your help?" Julieta asked gently, you gave a tilted look before responding.
"No ones wanted my help since I was five, all everyone has ever wanted in this town is everyone elses help when they can't be around, no one wants my help Tía Julieta," you explained, her expression sunk a bit, you spoke again before she could try and comfort you, "I know everyone in this town better than myself, I could be your perfect pal, be everyone in this town, but it'll never be me."
"Camilo, that's not true," Julieta said, you raised a brow at her, as though waiting for her justification for such a bold statement, "it feels that way, but we do want you around, we promise."
"This isn't even me, I look in a mirror and I don't know who I see, it's not me I know that much, I see what I'm supposed to be, what everyone needs, and no one needs me," you unraveled, trying to make it clear, trying to make your Tía understand, she wouldn't get it though, no ones gift was a curse in the same way yours was, "I don't even know why I'm telling you this, you aren't even mamá."
"That's because you're supposed to be everyone, you are everyone, you're one of the strings that keep this village held together, more so than some of the other Madrigals; you're a mirror," Julieta explained, trying to comfort your case of mistaken identity, your case of just not knowing anymore, "thank you for telling me."
"That's the problem, I'm the mirror, the truest mirror in town, and because of that, no mirror can reflect myself back at me, mirrors just show me everyone else I'm meant to reflect- I'm no chameleon, just a piece of broken glass," you said, pace hastening, heartrate picking up, digging deeper into your twisted psyche of never knowing what they'll need but knowing it won't be you, Camilo Madrigal.
"Stay here, watch the arepas," Julieta instructed, you nodded before she left, snagging a second arepa, regretting not having eaten enough this morning.
Her footsteps receded further and further until you couldn't hear her anymore, leaving you to yourself to stare at your own broken reflection of a curly haired girl in a dress looking back at you from the flattop. You smiled a little bit, you liked her, the child started to look back at you next, you had to refrain from holding out a hand to it like you always did, not wanting to get that many burns. Soon enough their reflections faded out, what you could've been and what you were, leaving only you behind; footsteps, rapid footsteps, you looked up to find Pepa clearly distressed, carrying a small hailstorm with her.
One moment your getting ready to say high the next you're no longer on the ground and the air is being squeezed from your lungs by Pepa, and you wish you were confused as to why. She doesn't let go, even why you try to nudge away, hail stinging as it hits, like ice against your neck, and she's crying a little bit. You know exactly why, Julieta told her everything, hail turns to a drizzle and she doesn't notice.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry we let you feel like that," Pepa sobbed out, continuing on in a similar fashion as she let you down, using her forearm to wipe her tears.
"No, mamá, it's perfectly fine, deep breathes," you said, trying to reassure her and ease her frayed nerves in one go, somehow managing one of the two.
"It's not fine, Abuela caused this, she let everyone use you, I'm so sorry Camilo," Pepa said, sniffling a little bit as the rain cloud started to fade just barely.
"Mamá, I promise you, everything is okay," you said, she gave a questioning look, you nodded a little bit.
"I'll make sure the rest of the familia knows," Pepa said, already determined to make sure her boy could smile earnestly once again, you shook your head.
"Please don't, it's fine if they don't need my help," you said, she went to speak again, you spoke first, "I don't want them to worry."
"Alright, I won't tell anyone except for Bruno," Pepa said, pulling you in for one more hug before turning to leave you alone with your reflection again.
And when you looked at it, looked at the hollow reflection, you saw a part of yourself you always did, the two looked a little bit better though; a bit more alive. You didn't know why they looked healthier, you weren't sure if you ever would be able to perceive your 'me, myself and I' the way everyone else does, but it doesn't matter. They don't looks so forlorn, and the childs distortion has begun to fade and its just a little bit of your own miracle.
You smile and wave as though they're separate people.
And you see the you that everyone else does smiling and waving back at you, colors stuck in sepia and grayscale, distortion strong- but it's you.
