In the age of social distancing and the limiting of groups to 50 people or less here is a list of FEMA approved films with 10 or fewer actors in the cast.
Locke. D: Steven Knight (2014). One man (Tom Hardy in his best performance to date) alone in a car, drives to a hospital after blowing up his life. The car is a BMW with lots of communication bells and whistles so he can talk with all of the people he’s betraying, but he is and remains alone.
Before Sunrise. Richard Linklater (1995). Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy) meet on a train to Vienna and spend the whole night walking the city streets, talking. It’s like a dream of falling in love.
Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? D: Mike Nichols (1966). Dream, meet nightmare. Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton as a couple whose disgust with each other and their marriage is the only thing they’re passionate about.Â
Ex Machina. D: Alex Garland (2015). A sci-fi version of a film noir triangle – A rich man (Oscar Isaac still his best performance), his patsy (Domhnall Gleeson) and a robot fatale (Alicia Vikander, who won the Oscar that year but unfortunately not for this).
Gravity. D: Alfonso Cuaron (2013). A two person epic. Two astronauts (Sandra Bullock, George Clooney) have to find their way home from Earth’s orbit when a debris field destroys their ship. Thrilling, claustrophobic and ultimately moving.
