Megastar Monday: The Coathangers
Good Morning Chickens,
I am super excited for today, which says a lot since I feel like shit. I have had a cold for just over two weeks and can’t seem to shake it. But enough of that, the reason for my excitement today is the group that we are highlighting.
To give a bit of history, when @loveaxiomatic and I started PCR (almost five years ago) we had some recurring themes that we kept in rotation, one of them being Fuck You Friday. We always try and challenge ourselves to find new songs that fit the themes, you know to keep things fresh. I came across a live performance titled “Shut The Fuck Up” by an all girl punk group called The Coathangers. I don’t know about them, but for me it was love at first listen.
In the time honored tradition of all great punk bands, the Coathangers made a very blatant political statement with their band name. Staunch pro-choicers the girls adopted the moniker associated with self-inflicted abortion for its irreverent vulgarity.
Hailing from Atlanta, Georgia, the Coathangers started playing together in 2006 as a way hang out more and maybe play a few shows for their friends at local parties. Who knew that thirteen years, five full length albums, dozens of singles and EP’s later they would still be together.I think a lot of it has to do with their apparent lack of egos. Crook Kid and Rusty seem to be interchangeable when it comes to lead vocals, both bringing their own unique vocal sounds and styles.
The original line up included Julia Kugel-Montoya (guitar, vocals, squeeker), Meredith Franco (bass, vocals), Stephanie Luke (drums, vocals) and Candice Jones (keyboards, vocals). Each member took a stage name (reminiscent of the Ramones) Crook Kid Coathanger (Julia), Minnie Coathanger (Meredith), Rusty Coathanger (Stephanie) and Bebe Coathanger (Candice). Bebe left the band (amicably) in 2013 to pursue college and is still friends with the other three members.
The Coathangers were the last band I saw in California before I moved to the UK and I just found out that they are playing a club in Brighton later in the month. Guess where I’m going to be? I am totally grateful that Ax was okay with me selecting one of my favorite bands to share with you. I know she is not a fan of their name, so I appreciate it even more knowing that.
I know they aren’t quite megastars, but I can always dream. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do. I know they may not be for everyone, but for me they are one of those, my brain exploded when I first heard them, kind of bands. Enjoy.
Don’t touch my shit kisses,
Love Axiomatic and the Punk Mummy

The Coathangers – Underground Arts – Philadelphia, PA – April 20, 2019
Underground Arts was packed with an excited crowd ready to hear Atlanta-based punk rock band The Coathangers. The band was preceded by two opening groups who got the crowd going. Sixteen Jackies opened the house and had everyone dancing with their unique twist on alternative rock. Next was Big Bite, Seattle-based band, whose adopted punk rock approach gave the perfect introduction to The Coathangers.
After Big Bite’s set, The Coathangers started to set up their stage themselves. The crowd all gathered around the stage, trying to get up front to see the three-women-band featuring singer/guitarist Julia Kugel-Montoya (Crook Kid Coathanger), bassist Meredith Franco (Minnie Coathanger) and singer/drummer Stephanie Luke (Rusty Coathanger).
The band opened with “Lithium,” one of their slower songs. The crowd was swaying and cheering, eager to see what they would play next. For a moment there was quiet, then a fast-paced guitar riff signaled at the more upbeat song “Watch Your Back.” The whole venue started to dance, and the audience went wild.
This set the precedent for the rest of the night. The crowd kept dancing and singing along to every song. Their hit “F the NRA” got the audience screaming the lyrics back at the artists. Their entire set was energetic and passionate.
It was clear how versatile and talented each member of the band is by the fact that they each took turns playing different instruments – drums, guitar and base. The band even got the audience to chant for their band manager to hop on stage for them to thank him. The whole venue was cheering “John, John, John, John!”
After they finished their set with their song “Squeeki,” which lead singer Julia Kugel-Montoya held an actual toy to the microphone to create a “squeaking” effect, the three-women-band hopped off stage. The crowd was quick to voice their displeasure, chanting for an encore. The Coathangers delivered and ran back on stage to oblige.
The Coathangers performance was a music experience like no other. The band had a personal connection with their audience, bridging the gap between artist and audience. The Coathangers started their 2019 tour in California and have traveled all around the U.S. since mid-February. Philadelphia was the last stop before traveling to Europe to end their tour.
If you haven’t seen The Coathangers play yet, you should put it on your list.

The Coathangers Headline Music Hall of Williamsburg on Thursday Night
The Coathangers—Julia Kugel-Montoya (guitar and vocals), Meredith Franco (bass and vocals) and Stephanie Luke (drums and vocals)—have been doing their own take on fun-loving, hook-heavy garage-punk music for more than a decade. And while they’ve become known for irreverent, energetic live performances, the Atlanta trio still makes sure to spend plenty of time in the recording studio. Their sixth full-length, The Devil You Know (stream it here), came out on Suicide Squeeze Records last month. “It is angry but never ugly, melodic without ever being syrupy, addressing gun violence, street harassment and more, all without ever becoming overbearing or preachy,” reports Paste. “Maybe there will be a day when we don’t need songs telling the NRA to ‘suck my dick.’ But until then The Devil You Know masterfully walks the line between politically charged while remaining, perhaps tragically, timeless. But it’s also an immensely listenable album, a fully realized emerging of the band’s true power in crafting edgy, electric songs.” Don’t miss the Coathangers (above, their video for “Bimbo”) live. See them on Thursday night at Music Hall of Williamsburg. And if you’re mart, youll arrive early enough to catch Seattle grunge-punk quartet Big Bite and local surf-rock four-piece High Waisted.
