The historic JUICE (JUpiter ICy moons Explorer) mission to the planet Jupiter is scheduled by the European Space Agency to blast into orbit today (April 13), and one of its critical components comes out of Israeli space research.
Upon reaching Jupiter’s orbit by 2031, JUICE will embark on a four-year mission to investigate three of Jupiter’s moons – Callisto, Europa and Ganymede – as well as the composition of Jupiter’s atmosphere.
The Israel Space Agency and the Innovation, Science and Technology Ministry funded the development of JUICE’s ultra-stable oscillator (USO) clock system enabling the spacecraft to perform a series of experiments and to communicate with Earth.
Customized at the Weizmann Institute of Science under Prof. Yohai Kaspi and Dr. Eli Galanti, and built by Israeli company AccuBeat — one of five atomic clock manufacturers in the world — it is said to be the most accurate space oscillator in the world.
Kaspi and Galanti and their teams at Weizmann began planning the spacecraft’s trajectory in 2013 to enable gravitational measurements of Jupiter and its moons, to learn more about the planet’s atmosphere and how it is affected by gravity and the magnetic field there.

Congratulations to ESA on the successful launch of the Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (Juice) mission!
It is interesting to note that one of the greatest engineering challenges in developing this spacecraft was the power supply. Sunlight intensity at Jupiter is very low, and to produce a few hundred watts, a solar collector area of 85 square meters was needed ― as a French astronaut remarked, bigger than his Paris apartment! Because the spacecraft was to be launched from Earth, rather than (for instance) assembled in weightlessness at the Space Station, the gigantic arrays had to be packed down into a volume capable of fitting into the fairing of the Ariane 5 rocket, and secured against the violent accelerations and vibrations of launch. Once again we see how a spacecraft with an eight-year planned mission is designed around the first eight minutes of its operating life.
Of course, much of this trouble could have been avoided if ESA had access to radioisotope thermoelectric generators. Degradation of PV cells in the powerful Jovian radiation field, and danger to the spacecraft systems from cold in the shadow of the planet, would then become insignificant. Unfortunately, pretty much the last of the world supply of plutonium-238 went to Mars on the Perseverance rover. So far, neither US work to restart production, nor British work on americium-241 RTGs, has reached the point of operational capability ― and the design of the “Juice” spacecraft had to be frozen years ago.

Welcome to another exciting episode of Astronomy Daily with your host, Anna. In today's episode, we've got a stellar lineup of fascinating space news straight from the cosmos. From a historic lunar flyby by the European Space Agency's JUICE mission to unexpected discoveries about Mars, courtesy of NASA's InSight lander. We've got it all. We'll also dive into the groundbreaking Polaris Dawn mission, which promises to feature the first-ever commercial spacewalk. And if that weren't enough, we'll wrap things up with a fun twist: zero gravity snacks from Doritos that are making their way into space. Buckle up, because this journey through the universe is going to be out of this world. - **ESA's JUICE Mission: A Historic Lunar Flyby**: The European Space Agency's Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE) is performing an unprecedented double gravity assist maneuver by swinging by both the Moon and Earth. This historic event aims to slingshot JUICE toward its ultimate destination, Jupiter and its intriguing moons Ganymede, Callisto, and Europa. The Moon's gravity served as a break, enabling JUICE to slow down in its trajectory relative to the Sun, effectively saving the spacecraft about six months of travel time. Photographs from the lunar encounter were taken using JUICE's onboard monitoring cameras, capturing remarkable images shared in real-time with the public via a live webcast.  - **Unexpected Discoveries on Mars**: NASA's Mars InSight lander, though no longer active, continues to provide invaluable data. A new study revealed that Mars gets bombarded by space rocks far more frequently than previously estimated. This insight comes from a combination of seismic data and orbital imagery, suggesting a pressing need to update our current models of Martian geological activity and surface evolution. Notably, two of the newly discovered craters are the largest ever detected on Mars, each roughly the size of a football field. This finding has far-reaching implications for our understanding of planetary surfaces across the solar system. - **Polaris Dawn Mission: The First Commercial Spacewalk**: The Polaris Dawn mission team, led by billionaire entrepreneur Jared Isaacman, is ready to embark on a groundbreaking journey. This mission raises the stakes in commercial space exploration by aiming to perform the first-ever commercial spacewalk. The crew, including retired US Air Force pilot Scott "Kidd" Poteet and SpaceX engineers Anna Menon and Sarah Gillis, will attempt to break Earth orbit altitude records and conduct approximately 40 experiments. Additionally, the mission aims to pioneer high-speed internet access in space using Starlink connectivity. - **Zero Gravity Snacks: Doritos in Space**: Doritos is launching a new limited edition flavor called Cool Ranch Zero Gravity, designed specifically for space travel. These specially formulated chips feature an oil-based coating to prevent crumbs from floating in microgravity environments. The Polaris Dawn mission will see its crew become the first people to eat Doritos in space. Doritos has partnered with the Polaris Dawn crew to raise awareness and funds for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, contributing a $500,000 donation and offering fans the chance to win mission-themed memorabilia. ✏️ am i late for this bc black lemonade and prune juice
Black Lemonade : Why don't cookies have a specific noise that means "there are bees here, let's leave immediately." Why are elephants more advanced than us. Prune Juice: We do have a specific noise for it. It sounds like this: Prune Juice: "There are bees here, let's leave immediately."

Insektober day 8: Film Style (Horror)!
I always knew I wanted to draw something horror-themed for today, but I didn't know what it would be... I chose to parody Carrie in the end cuz the blood spill scene is horrifying but in a more sorta psychological way... and it is very easily translated into Insektors as I draw it!
As you may be able to deduce from the Koal Juice spilled everywhere... I don't want to veer into gore territory with my insektors art! I think with Insektors there's a lot more ways I can convey fear while also keeping it pg --or at least, the kind of pg you might see on an 80's/90's era film like Labyrinth or Antz. Antz is actually a huge inspiration for my insektors work if you can believe that! That movie is SO fucked up btw. good grief.
ramblings abt Carrie under the cut, since I'm thinking about it! warning for dysphoria i guess???
I know Carrie is kinda infamous for its theme of menstruation & that being tied to the horror of the story, though I actually find that idea compelling as a trans man--I think the idea of menstrual horror is interesting and frightening in concept, but I think it usually falls flat cuz its mostly like, cisgender men writing about it, and they don't really 'get it'. And then on the other hand I think its simply not well explored cuz your average woman just doesn't find that sort of thing scary at all lol-- how could they when it's just a mundane and normal thing that happens every month? And that is valid.
It is scary to me personally because its uncontrollable and its essentially your body betraying you once every month, or worse, just completely randomly ! It's the lack of control over your body and your life that gets me I think. less like "lol isnt it scary women have periods" and more "isnt it scary that your body does this thing that hurts you and destroys you and you have no way of stopping it". Maybe we should have more transmasc authors writing horror? or maybe I've been looking in the wrong places and there are a shit ton I have never heard of!! Maybe both!
sorry abt going on a long rant on a post abt funny bugs! also, did you know drawing dripping fluids is very difficult for me? it is! I like the second panel more than the first because the koal juice arrangement (??????) feels more realistic to me. Anyways im taggigng this with spcopophobia cuz I drew Aelia's eyes kinda scary in that second panel. I will take any opportunity to draw a character with scary eyes LOL.
