4 months after moving, I am still sorting out my books! This has led me to restarting my collections. I have always been a Judge Dredd fan. I was heartbroken when my bloody father left behind my 5 years worth of immaculate 2000AD magazines, every single issue. I'm starting to sit and read more and have found I'm loving Judge Dredd just as much as I did back in the late 70s. I currently have quite a few books and graphic novels on order, starting to rebuild my collection. I'm wading through Judge Dredd Complete Case Files 01 special hardbacked edition. I bought it when I was undergoing my initial breast cancer treatment, sat in the waiting room for my forever late Oncologist. I have editions 2 & 6. Editions 3,4&5 on order. Plus Dredd Early Years Omnibus editions Year One, Two and Three on the way. Also coming are the Daily Dredds book one and two (hardbacks. I do prefer hardback editions!) The Daily Star ran a daily and weekend Dredd strip for about 5 years or more. They finally got them all together into 2 books. Also a couple of graphic novels. So waiting for Postie & Delivery Men. Judge Dredd: The Complete Case Files 03 by John Wagner My rating: 4 of 5 stars I've been looking forward to this one as it has the first appearance of Judge Death in it (also Judge Andersen's first appearance). It was a decent enough episode appearing to be suited as a Halloween issue probably. Other stories were better, though. This volume contains no major story lines but is full of one issue or 2-3 issue stories. Most are of a dramatic nature with only a couple of cheesy ones. A very good read of late 70's Judge Dredd. What I really enjoyed though was one of the opening stories which introduced the Blocks as having the celebrity names. Up to this point, they had just been numbered and I had wondered when (and how) they started using the names. This first story introduces Blocks Charlton Heston, Benjamin Spock and Harriet Beecher Stowe. The block names come up a couple of times throughout the volume but haven't been integrated into the universe yet. There is also a return (kinda) of Satanus! Good read. SSALEFISH GSO FIRST LOOK #74 FOR 8.29.18

(DVD Box Art by Bill Sienkiewicz.) I've been on a Venture Bros. deep dive. The only thing I can trace it back to is thinking about heading up to New York Comic Con in October, where five years ago I saw the best panel I've ever attended, Let's All Smoking, hosted by show creator Jackson Publick and his main man Doc Hammer. Whatever it was, I've been rewatching the whole series from the beginning (if you don't like that episode, you don't like one of my all-time Top 5 moments of TV), reading all of the behind the scenes junk on every episode in the Go Team Venture art book from Dark Horse, and completing my 8" Biff Bang Pow figure collection.

The two things that have struck me the most are 1) how many comic people were involved (Power of Shazam's Mike Manley, The Tick's Ben Edlund, Black Canary's Annie Wu, the legendary Bill Sienkiewicz), yet no comics were ever created for it even though Jackson Publick originally planned to do the series as a comic and 2) I wish we had done more of an Astrobase Go aesthetic with the store's decor and our personalities.

Also, I'll be at Geeksboro Battle Pub's Totally Free Craft Fair on Saturday, August 25th from 11 AM - 3:30 PM testing out our wares for Greensboro Comicon, so come by if you'd like first crack at a deal on comics or toys and grab a plate of the best tater tots in town!

You can guess this is a UK comic by virtue of it featuring football. Or ‘soccer’ if you’re from the colonies... Not an unknown sport in UK comics, I am not sure that it would have made it to the 22nd/23rd century, or that a very US dominant Starfleet would have provided its officers with the equipment to play it with space gorillas.

But then, that’s the fun of these strips. Like the Gold Key comics, it’s Star Trek but not quite as you know it. They couldn’t even get Kirk’s name right for the first few episodes!

The one unfortunate aspect to these reprints (in the Eaglemoss Star Trek The Graphic Novel Collection series- I can’t vouch for the IDW reprints) is that the hardback format is not really compatible with the UK comic style, which sees the story spread across two pages (I assume the centre spread, since they are in colour, and that tended to be limited to the front and middle of comics, at best) rather than two separate pages. There is thus no gutter, and many of the central panels are lost in the binding. The dialogue is hardly key to understanding events, but it is unfortunate that you can have multiple speech bubbles per spread rendered incomprehensible by the binding. This also has an impact on the art, leaving panels severely truncated, lost in the spine.

This isn’t a problem unique to this collection- many 2000AD reprints have had to struggle with this, where the opening two page spread of a Judge Dredd episode can be lost in the binding used for, say, The Complete Case Files. However, by that point in publishing (almost a decade after the Star Trek strips started), the pages weren’t so dense, so the loss of information is typically less, although still frustrating. They also have the advantage that this impacts only part of an episode- typically the first two pages of a 5 or 6 page episode- whereas here the episodes are only two pages long, so the effect is much more noticeable.

In a collection such as this, where the volumes are uniform so as to give the appearance of a collection, I am not sure how this sort of problem could be addressed. It’s probably not cost effective, nor aesthetically consistent, to have the occasional volume with a binding that allows the pages to lie flat (which would perhaps be an option if printing these as stand-alone reprints), but without this there is an unfortunate loss to the quality of the reprints in terms of experiencing the stories as printed.
