This is by all means not a complete list of banger JP fics! It's my personal favorites—those fics that lodged themselves in my brain for one reason or another and never left.

Hopefully this list satisfies at least some of the sudden influx of interest for JP fics (and given how well rec'ing a fic turned out last time...) But, nah for real, not to make rec'ing fics fake deep or anything, but I think the fandom would be a better place if people were more unapologetically enthusiastic about fics and less afraid to interact with authors. But before I start, I want to acknowledge the prevalence of potentially stereotypical depictions of Jazz in regards to his speech (❞), criminal/violent/sexual characterization (▾), or backstory/origins (⟲) in the JP/TF fandom. I've attempted to flag fics with the corresponding symbols above, because I'd like to recognize those problems while still rec'ing for a variety of other fantastic qualities. That said, I'm not infallible so please use your own discretion.

I've also tagged fics with "hiatus" if it's been a while between updates, but the author hasn't made a comment—these fics are especially important to interact with, b/c you never know if the author stopped posting b/c they weren't getting any reviews!

Flawless characterization, flawless dynamics, flawless plot, one-of-a-kind writing style... it's got it all. There are 2 fics in the JP series, but the author has a bunch of other Gen fics set in the same AU and another on ao3. Bonus: some of the Gen fics are Jazz & Prowl-centric and can be read as romantic!

Bonus: it's got fanart + there are 5 extra fics, including a Jazz-centric prequel, in the same AU.

1. As We Come Together, prequel 2: Surface of the Sun

*Long, convoluted explanation coming up given that this series is obviously a whole different beast compared to likely any other fanfic series you or I have ever encountered in our lives... b/c the author is just superhuman or smth idk...

The series is officially listed as 4 parts (WYaIC, WTWHL, AWCT, MWNLG). Where You and I Collide is the JP-centric prequel to the other 3 Gen fics (that have substantial background JP). WTWHL is technically part 1 of the series, but it's sorta more character-focused ficlets than a continuous story... which is why I didn't specifically list it as a rec even if that makes things more confusing... (ᵕ¬ᴗ¬) Also the author didn't list Surface of the Sun as part of the series, but it's a direct prequel (like WYaIC) starring the Lambo twins and it's... oh it's so good... absolutely shatters my heart that it's been d/c'd.

I've not listed an exact world count, b/c if you want to read every bit of the AU with all its prequels and offshoots (which I would highly recommend and have done)... I'm not gonna do the math for you, sorry. The main 4-part story is ~1.7m+ which I realize is frankly insane and extraordinarily intimidating, but it is so sooo sooooo worth it. The author has created their own fully fleshed out TF world with its own lore and characters and the time and effort they've put into is mind-boggling .

Anywho, despite ultimately being d/c'd, the series is still tremendously readable and nothing about JP is left feeling unbearably unfinished. I also happened to track down the lovely author and beg for a summary of the ending, b/c I'm a bit of a freak and they very kindly provided it so if not knowing how a fic ends bothers you/prevents you from reading, you have the option of getting closure even if you can't have it written out.

Thing is, none of that was Jazz. He doesn’t remember those days, before he was himself, except in his dreams. And his dreams are terrifying.

*This fic makes me feel some type of way... it gives me shivers. It's so eerie and the premise is so unique. It's also beautifully bittersweet, which is a hard concept to pull off.

*Jazz and Prowl are sorta painfully adorable in this fic and the JP is so sweet it makes my teeth hurt. Plus it's got a really fun premise with lots of shenanigans.

*Another super unique premise! I love a good historical mystery and the imagery is specularly evocative! And I'm a sucker for the trope... which I can't reveal, because of spoilers.

G1/Jux compliant. Requiem sequel. Prowl doubted that his desired image of Respected Superior Officer came across very well with a half-scrapped mech clinging to his hand, but he loomed as best as he was able and glared.

*Requiem is Jazz-centric and I'd say more of a prequel to Descant than Descant is a sequel to Requiem... if that makes any sense. Regardless of how you view it or what order you read it, it's fucking brutal. (-‿-“) Bonus: author also wrote another really great fic called Transformers: Juxtaposition which is Lambo twin-centric and OC-centric, but perhaps one of the only OC fics that I've ever enjoyed.

They're all sorta a guilty pleasure of mine, because it's fun to enjoy Prowl being a bit of a BAMF and Jazz being a bit of a damsel on occasion even if objectively I understand why it's not everyone's cup of tea. ("￣▽￣";)ゞ But the author definitely deserves credit for creative and entertaining premises and a really nice writing style!

*Prowl & Bluestreak centric, but Jazz has a solid amount of screentime. The subplot is pre-relationship, co-parenting JazzProwl and it's cute as hell. It's not 'officially' discontinued, but it hasn't been updated since 2010... so... At least it doesn't end in a cliffhanger. (╥﹏╥|||)

But Trepan and Senator Shockwave both know well what’s coming. One aims to use a defiant miner’s fall to crush the aspirations of the masses. The other wants to use that miner’s triumph to ignite them. Neither much cares about Megatron himself, or his ultimate survival. Therein lies their fatal error.

*Not clear from the summary, but the premise is essentially "what if Megatron got the matrix instead of OP" and how their pre-war lives would have to pan out for them to ultimately switch roles. Just a really fascinating, supremely well-done "what-if" fic, but also probably the weirdest one to put on this particular list, b/c JP turns into megatron/JP at the very, very end... but... I just kinda ignore that development since it happens in like almost literally in the last chapter and you can def read it as friendship up until that point... (¬⤙¬ ᵕ)

I imagine him leaving for collage out town as soon as he's able to. Making the big step to cut off his Father & Step Mother from his life. Like to think with his new found freedom he'd be more open to try new things he was never allowed to do. A big help in his new world experience/happiness/love would be his collage gf who I name Yomo (Yoru-mo). I don't have a set Adult/Next Gen design for him yet but he would for sure move back to Herkleton after his first kid is born.

Then here some more old scribbled from last summer. JP & Omar are still a work in progress on how I want them to look as dads & I did redesign Sonya to be smaller since since she's supposed to be 3 (Also gave her a new set of clothes so she can be her own person instead of a copy of one parent 💛)

For Maney I hc as a cancer survivor & is in the process of regrowing her hair. This hc isn't made with the intention of random angst but more so in the thought of these kind of life changing experiences just happen to some families. 🌻

SO funny and the plot is actually so engaging. someone pls talk to me ab this its one of my favs rn 😭

- l'amour est bleu by laylayli ... 40k words and 5/5 chapters. perhaps my FAVORITE kaisagi ff and one of my fav bllk fics oat. its about isagi starting to babysit for kaisers younger sister and them falling in love during it. isagi just cares so much for kaisers younger sister and kaiser slowly starts loving him so much for it and isagi cant help but fall for kaiser its just. so endearing and i love it <3.

- world class hypocrite by aashimar ... 80.5k words and 9/10 chapters (EPILOGUE PLEASE PLEASE UPLOAD). read tags! explicit sex scenes throughout but its staged post-canon. this fic made me SICK. rinsagi au where isagi was outed as gay by rin before the wc and his life was basically ruined afterwards. the LONGING and RESENTMENT in this is the absolute peak of society. both rin and isagis characters are written so amazingly like theyre so flawed and theyre very messy people but theyre like really actually in love with each other. they say a lot of fucked up shit to each other but i still swear by this fic! the plot was SO SO intriguing and the way its written is really realistic. the chemistry is absolutely INSANE in this fic. my personal fav bllk fic and one of my fav fics ever! belongs in the hof tbh

i got bored or smth so here's the games i think nene owns for her console collection (based on the list in this post). her favourite genres are PVP (fighting/FPS), but we know she also likes Open World and RPGs, so we'll be going off that and a few other details I'll expand on later.

chronological order

1. SEGA MEGA DRIVE 2 (Japan release)

This console was hardest to ID but eventually I settled for it being a fucked up MD. Sure whatever. The controller is most like an MD2, which was mostly sold on its own, but if it had pack-in games those were: Puyo Puyo, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, or Virtua Racing. In CGO Nene doesn't seem to be familiar with Puyo so we can rule that one out.

This console had loads of iconic fighting games, like Streets of Rage 1-3, Mortal Kombat 1&2 (uncensored), and Street Fighter II Dash and Super Street Fighter II (yes there's multiple street fighter 2s). There were also a few Phantasy Star entires, an RPG series I know nothing about lol. And Altered Beast, the beat-em-up that was the original pack-in game for America.

If Nene is based she owns Ristar and Sonic the Hedgehog/2/3&K but idk what her thoughts on platformers are. She might like Vectorman though there's a gun in that one.

2. SEGA SATURN (Japanese Model One)

Since this is a first release I'm gonna assume that it belonged to one of her parents first since these were sold for like a year before model two was thrown into circulation. I'm gonna assume that about the MD2 as well. And most of the stuff here that predates 8th gen considering Nene was canonically born in 2005. Anyway.

If the Saturn model one had a pack-in game it was Virtua Fighter Remix. Literally the only pack-in. Nene owns Virtua Fighter Remix. Even if it wasn't the pack-in she owns it dude trust me. There were a couple other Virtua Fighter games released for that console, with Virtua Fighter 2 actually being the best selling game on the hardware. AM2 also released Fighting Vipers and the VF/FV crossover game Fighters Megamix. Did you know Megamix has the palmtree from the AM2 logo as a playable character? Now you do.

The Saturn also had port of Doom, as well as the original Biohazard, Worms, and Tomb Raider games. Also apparently the original Marvel vs Capcom was on this console, under the name Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter. JP exclusive too. Rayman, Bug!, and Gex were here too but idk how Nene feels about those though. Nenechan play Rayman.

Nene doesn't own an N64 so she does not own Smash 64. What the fuck Nenechan. This also means she doesn't own Ocarina or Majora's Mask, or any Zelda released in the 90s for that matter (I know Majora was 2000 don't even).

3. XBOX

For some reason Nene (or her parents) chose Xbox over PS2 or Dreamcast for 6th gen smh. However this does make sense when you consider the existence of Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2. Which were never released in Japan apparently but we'll ignore that. There's also Dead or Alive 3. Maybe Nene bought the Xbox second hand.

Nenechan buy a Dreamcast. And a PS2. And a GCN. Actually just get a Wii NENECHAN WHY DON'T YOU OWN A WII. Nene continues to not own any Smash or Zelda games.

Anyway this does mean she can own Jet Set Radio Future but also idk if she cares. Nenechan play Jet Set Radio for me because I can't. It was a launch title in Japan and later a pack-in game (region unknown) though so maybe she owns it anyway.

4. PLAYSTATION PORTABLE

You could watch movies on this one just saying. I mean DVD players on consoles became commonplace during this era but you could like. Buy discs specifically for this console to watch movies on.

I don't really know much about the PSP so I'm kinda reading this off a list of console exclusive games. The original LittleBigPlanet was here apparently. Also some spinoffs to popular franchises, like Guilty Gear Judgement and Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops. Also more Phantasy Star.

5. XBOX 360 (Pro)

Halo 3. Still wasn't released in Japan. Still a region locked console. Idc at this point. Microsoft please release Halo 1-3 in Japan. Make Nenechan happy. Halo 4 was released in Japan for Xbox 360 though so she owns that. Maybe Dead or Alive 4 and the 360 Gears of War games too. This is also the only console Call of Duty 2 was released on. Nenechan definitely owns COD2.

6. PLAYSTATION 3 (Super Slim)

Anyway game libraries are getting huge for consoles around this time so don't expect me to go as crazy. Also they start overlapping. Heavily. I don't really know why Nenechan owns two 7th gens and two 8th gens (i mean technically three 7th gens because that's the PSP too) but I guess I own four 7th gens and five 8th gens so. whatever. At least I pick the ones with varied game libraries unlike the person who doesn't own a Nintendo Wii.

We got the console version of LittleBigPlanet, LittleBigPlanet 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, and multiple Ratchet & Clanks as exclusives here. Can we just assume that Nenechan owns Call of Duty games. 3, World at War, Modern Warfare 1/2/3, Black Ops 1/2/3, Ghosts, and Advanced Warfare were all this gen. 3 was also on Xbox and the latter three were also 8th gen.

Nenechan still doesn't own a smash or zelda game.

7. XBOX ONE

Halo Infinite.

8. PLAYSTATION 4 (Pro)

Again the games catalogue thing is becoming an issue so like. I dunno. We know Nene plays PUBG that's explicitly referenced in CGO but she probably plays the PC version. There's also PUBG's rival but if she plays it she probably would choose the PC version again. All the other COD games are on these two consoles so like. Probably owns those too. More Metal Gears, Street Fighters, Streets of Rage 4, etc.

I wonder if Nene would like something like Uncharted or Tomb Raider.

9. NINTENDO SWITCH (Lite, Blue & Turquoise)

NENECHAN FINALLY OWNS SMASH AND ZELDA. I GET TO HAVE FUN AGAIN. Yeah obviously Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are green and beautiful open world games. And Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fits Nene as a PVP fighting game.

I also get to have some more fun here because Nene owns a few amiibos. In the left image is an Animal Crossing villager, and what might be Legally Distinct Kid Icarus? In the right I'm not sure. The pink one looks like another AC villager maybe. Genuinely no idea what the gold thing is. Legally Distinct Ristar. Wait Sega made Ristar. Not sure if she owns these games or if these are just for smash purposes. I mean Not-Kid-Icarus definitely is there hasn't been a New KI game in 12 years. AC also doesn't really seem to be Nene's style based on some stuff she says in-game when talking with Shiho so it's probably also for smash.

That's Splatoon 2. Or the splatoon mangas.

10. Other stuff idk

I don't know what this is it's hideous and I don't wanna think about it.

She has a PC but Steam is a thing so like. Idk she can run anything on that. It can run Doom.

In Rui's 2022 bday card story 2 they play a kart racer that's like. weird as fuck it ain't MK. Name is close enough though it's called Cookie Kart. It's implied Nene owned it and the timeline lines up for it to be Mario Kart Wii BUT NENE DOESN'T OWN A WII. Nene PLEASE buy a Wii.

She doesn't own any 9th gen because the game predates them and the first three years of its run are set in the "PS5s are unobtainable" era anyway.

I'm deep deep deep into my MIU404 rewatch and I'm giddy with excitement over how well Last Mile has been doing after 3 days (970 million yen!!!!!!!!). My twitter is just nothing but Hoshino Gen and MIU404 and Last Mile tweets now. I feel so much better and just happier aaaaah. Maybe I'll get back into my ANN listening too.

Also reeling from the discovery that not only is Hideo Kojima getting into MIU404 and promoting it to his followers in JP and EN, he and Gen have known each other for much longer than I thought and are absolutely adorkable together. His bday post recently had them in the most dorky pose I felt my day get better and my soul be renergized.

I figured something out about how Pokémon games released when I was a kid and I've never understood why so many people don't seem to know about it, so I'm posting it here. Please send this to anyone being annoying about remakes.

Remakes are released in the gen exactly double the gen it first came out in. The only exception is if it's Kanto.

GSC, gen 2, was remade as HGSS in gen 4.

RSE, gen 3, was remade as ORAS in gen 6.

DPPT, gen 4, was remade as BDSP in gen 8.

Odd numbered gens release another version of their own game and/or a Kanto remake.

gen 1 had Yellow, 3 had FRLG, 5 had B2W2, and 7 had both USUM and LGPE.

We don't know for sure if gen 9 will end with Z-A and add another part to this rule or if they'll also release some kind of Scarlet and Violet 2 or another Kanto. (Dear Arceus, please, no Kanto 4. We've had enough. Give us just one more Johto. Please.)

I also want to note that a new entry or DLC in the main series typically releases roughly 1-2 years after the previous one. The fact that Z-A is coming out this year (2025) instead of 2024 means that Game Freak is taking their first 2-year gap between games since the release of B2W2. (If you check the timeline, it looks like it started with Platinum, but I'm specifically using JP releases since the translators were on their own schedule until XY when the games started releasing at the same time internationally.)

This is really good, because the quality decline since they started releasing annually has been noticeable (at least to me. I may just be nostalgic for the DS. The Alola and Hisui games are the only fully 3d ones I really like.) and giving the devs more time to work on the game means the game will be better overall and we'll likely get a much more playable game on release compared to the mess I've heard was Scarlet and Violet on day one. There are SO many games that were completely ruined due to rushed production, and it's a huge shame!

My 614 Jordayla Analysis/Commentary pt.3

Now let’s go back to the housing situation. After Layla has a brief chat with Preach, she realizes that what she and Jordan need is a home, not a house. I am happy to be wrong but so far, the writing is pointing to Jordayla taking over the Baker home. If you recall in 401 when she tells her father that “it is not about the house, it is about the home”. The next time we see Layla after that scene with her father, she is moving into the Baker house. The Baker house has been Layla's residence since S4 until she married Jordan. This house is also where she grew up with Jordan and Olivia since middle school. We even have a laylivia childhood flashback in that house. So home for Layla is the Baker house.

For Jordan, obviously, this is his childhood home but also in 517, he tells Spencer that the Baker house still feels like home even though Coop is now in his room. While there was an undertone of Layla who he considers his home living in the house, I still believe that Jordan always knows that the Baker house is where he will always call home. So I am expecting Jordayla to take over the Baker home and I will be very surprised if NK and Oby go a different route in 615 with this housing arrangement.

Jordayla pregnancy theories!  I feel this episode dropped major pregnancy hints through the writing. Between Jordan cooking for Layla, him patting her tummy and Layla wearing pink in this episode, I feel it is very clear that Jordayla will be getting a parenting arc. In the worst case scenario, the audience would likely find out about Layla being pregnant in the early episodes of S7. This is the worst case scenario. I am also sure of Jordayla having a daughter, I am not so sure of a son yet.

Now this brings me to the wild theory I am about to share with you.

I don’t know if it is me but have you noticed the writing sort of building up Amina and Layla? Starting from 611. I am beginning to think Amina might be the new gen character or at least one of the new gen characters. When we heard of the new gen stuff, I think a lot of us assumed it would be a coach Baker and Spencer type situation. I don’t know why we didn’t consider the fact that the new gen character will likely be a female character from Crenshaw being mentored by a new gen Baker who is female. It is definitely Billy and Spencer all over again but it is also different because we are looking at female characters. If this is the route NK is going, I am here for it because it will keep things fresh and allow the writers to be more creative. So I can see Amina likely being the new ‘Spencer’ that gets mentored by a Baker only that the Baker is Layla. 

From a storytelling perspective, this makes a lot of sense. Amina has quite a bit in common with Layla. Just like Layla she lost her mother at a very young age. Remember Amina’s mother is Mo (the main antagonist in season 3) and her uncle is Tyrone. Both her uncle and mother are/were gang members and her father Preach used to be a gang member. Preach, her father fired the shot that killed Mo, her mother. I don’t think Amina is fully aware of this yet. Amina had a pretty fleshed out arc in seasons 4 and 5 that showed her curiosity to know the truth about what happened to her mother. From season 4, you can see she sort of had an idea of what was going on. She was also involved in a custody battle between Preach and her grandparents. So just like Layla, she had a pretty tough background as a kid. So you can see there is already so much material with Amina’s character that the writers can pull from to bring in high stakes drama. 

There are also some hints in the writing that she is already in a ‘teen phase’ with Preach. Preach grounded her in this episode. I can see her having tensions with her dad which is similar to teen Layla in seasons 1 and 2 and a bit of season 3 and  the tensions she had with JP Keating. This tension can become something else if Amina eventually understands/finds out more about the circumstances surrounding her mother’s death and the role her father played in it. If the writers play their cards right, the Amina arc is already brewing to be a really messy drama on AA. For more complexity, the writing can have Amina struggle with grief, depression or for a change, become a wild rebellious teen that Preach struggles to handle and we have our hands full. 

With other characters, Amina fits in very well too. She knows Patience very well and since she did/does some drama in high school(611), I can see Patience step in here as Patience is a musician and also has broadway experience. Coop blends in so well here too. Coop was front and center in the custody battle, Coop knew her mother very well and other than Preach, Coop is likely the only other character that has a full picture on the lives of her uncle and mother. Again, another source of drama. 

Going back to Layla, the storyline has been strongly hinting on her being the mother of a little girl. Having Layla mentor Amina makes loads of sense as Layla can begin to process motherhood or prep for motherhood through the lens of supporting Amina. I can see her relationship with Amina force her to really think about what type of mother she wants to be for her daughter. This will land better if it happens while Layla is pregnant or if she has a newborn daughter. Both Amina and Layla being young women that lost mothers at a very young age, in quite tragic circumstances (murder and suicide)  takes the Layla/Amina dynamic to a deeper level. I can see the writing continue to flesh out Monica/Layla a little bit more too, especially as Monica Keating was a huge part of Layla’s arc this season.

So Amina being the new gen character that the show decides to focus on will not come as a shock to me. Again this is what I have seen from the writing. I don’t know NK’s plan and which actors she plans to bring back  but this is likely where I can see the writing on All American heading. If all the stuff I have written makes no sense, please throw it out. This is my writer brain, fan theory brain here and I just wanted to yap all about it. This episode also sort of dropped clues on the vibe S7 will likely have. I am thinking the vibe shifts into a more lighter, feel-good, wholesome vibe with maybe a strong family vibe lean. There was just something very light about this episode because even the writing for Spelivia (who normally have their writing lean into more serious, angsty stuff) were written to be pretty light and comedic. The next episode seems pretty emotional too. I am thinking this will likely be the vibe next season and I expect the audience to change a little bit because of this shift.

So that is all the yappings for this episode. There are still some loose ends to tie up with Jordayla so I will surely be back next week with more yappings. I personally loved this episode and I am looking forward to seeing how NK closes season 6 for us.

“The left afterburner technique” and SR-71 special problems: here’s what made Blackbird air refueling challenging

It’s impossible to overemphasise the essential role played by the KC-135Q tanker crews, without whom successful prosecution of the SR-71 Blackbird mission would have been impossible. As told by Paul F Crickmore in his book Lockheed Blackbird: Beyond the Secret Missions (Revised Edition), it became apparent to Strategic Air Command (SAC) that the tanker force dedicated to supporting SR-71 operations would need to be expanded beyond the original 21 Q-model aircraft and in 1967 the decision was made to modify an additional 35 aircraft. Some 20 KC-135As from the 70th AREFS, 43rd BW at Little Rock AFB, Arkansas, and 15 from the 306th AREFS, 306th BW at McCoy AFB, Florida were therefore converted.

Linda has a personal relationship with the SR-71 because her father Butch Sheffield flew the Blackbird from test flight in 1965 until 1973. Butch’s Granddaughter’s Lisa Burroughs and Susan Miller are graphic designers. They designed most of the merchandise that is for sale on Threadless. A percentage of the profits go to Flight Test Museum at Edwards Air Force Base. This nonprofit charity is personal to the Sheffield family because they are raising money to house SR-71, #955. This was the first Blackbird that Butch Sheffield flew on Oct. 4, 1965.

As told by Col. Richard H. Graham, a former Blackbird pilot, in his book SR-71 The Complete Illustrated History of THE BLACKBIRD The World’s Highest, Fastest Plane, KC-135Q crews and their aircraft were unique from the rest of the Air Force in several ways. Their aircrews in fact were the only one certified in Blackbird’s specific radio-silent rendezvous procedures, and their boom operators were the only ones qualified to refuel the SR-71.

The Q-model tankers had special plumbing between their fuel tanks, allowing them to transfer JP-4 and JP-7 fuel between various tanks. Their engine could burn transfer JP-4 or JP-7 fuel. If the SR-71 landed somewhere JP-7 fuel was not available, the Q-model tankers flew in with the fuel and, through the use of transfer hoses on the ground, were able to refuel the SR-71. One of the best advantages of flying the Q-model tankers is that their crews did not have to be on twenty-four-hour alert status like the rest of the SAC’s tankers’ crew members.

No story on the SR-71 would be complete without an understanding and appreciation of just how valuable the KC-135Q model tankers and their crews were to the successful and safe completion of every mission.

The SR-71, needed to be refueled approximately every hour. Refueling was tricky, but SR-71 pilots were always up to the challenge.

The Unknown Story of the SR-71 Blackbird that was saved by a Tanker after a Double-Engine Flameout over Northern Laos

Usually, refueling was the first thing that they did after takeoff. Under some circumstances, while flying from Kadena Air Force Base in Okinawa, they would take off with enough fuel for the entire mission.

Graham recalls;

“No refueling necessary it was called a Yo-Yo. But this was a maintenance nightmare. A few of our missions required the SR-71 to accelerate to Mach 3+ right after takeoff with a 65,000-pound fuel load. The Yo-Yo procedure had the crew chief completely refuel the plane to full tanks of 80,000 pounds of fuel. Then, with the nitrogen pressurization system working, they de-fueled 15,000 pounds of JP-7, ending up with a 65,000-pound fuel load and a plane that was capable of going immediately to Mach 3+.”

SR-71 Blackbird air refueling special problems

As explained by Aloysius G. Casey and Patrick A. Casey in their book Velocity Speed with Direction The Professional Career of Gen Jerome F. O’Malley, refueling presented special problems: visibility was poor due to the triangular forward window, and the helmet associated with the pressure suit caused undesired reflections. The receptacle (which received the fuel) was aft of the cockpit; therefore, the SR-71 had to fly underneath the tanker. Normally, one would take on about 70,000 pounds or 11,000 gallons of JP7 fuel.

Typically, refueling took place at about 25,000 feet. As the weight increased and the air speed had to be held down to accommodate the slower tanker, the aircraft became thrust-limited; that is, drag increased as it approached the stall speed for this unique aircraft (there was no additional thrust available without afterburner). At that point, the pilot had to move one throttle slightly into the afterburner range to hold position.

The left afterburner technique

Using one afterburner required the pilot to counter the asymmetry with rudder or just tolerate some sideways flight. Interestingly, the pilots developed the left afterburner technique so the aircraft would yaw slightly to the right. This way, only the left quarter panel had defogged air, and one could get that benefit if needed. Refueling was an intense effort for the pilot and was required two to four times for each mission.
