Ian Kevin Curtis (15 July 1956 – 18 May 1980) was a singer-songwriter and musician. He was the lead singer and songwriter of the band Joy Division. Joy Divison formed after meeting at Sex Pistols show. The band also went through several name changes for themselves. They first appeared on the TV music show, So It Goes during the band’s performances. He did play guitar on a few tracks in the studio. Curtis became known for his bass-baritone voice and his deep and dark songwriting. He was also known for being quiet and having an awkward presence and his almost “ herky-jerky” dancing style, often from the epileptic seizures he began experiencing in the later part of 1978, which didn’t speak to anyone. The band released Pleasures albums in 1979 and Closer the following year.  Unfortunately, Curtis suffered from depression and was dealing with his seizures, possibly dealing with other matters in his personal life. So, Curtis took his life before the band’s North American tour. Joy Division only released two Unknown The rest of the members of Joy Division went on to form the new wave band New Order. Their sound was much more different than Joy Division, with less dark songwriting and a different sound. I say this about many artists, but Ian Curtis is one of the most important and influential artists in post-punk and “indie rock” He influenced a number with his songwriting and Joy Division’s sound. His movements are commonly used by some lead singers and by fans on the dance floor. I often wonder how Curtis would affect music if he were still alive. If you want a quick look into his complex life and short music career, his life is depicted in the films 24 Hour Party People and Closer. His life was plagued with many problems, but he left a long-lasting impression on many artists and fans.

What got me into goth was this friend of mine who had noticed I liked Joy Divison and had been listening to a little bit of Molchat Doma. I had been talking about how I wished I could find more music like it and she literally went. “U know there’s like an entire subculture around it right?”
Look, I knew goths existed, but I didn’t know what their music was like. So she made me this playlist and honestly if anyone else wants to get into the subculture I’m linking this playlist and it’s sequel because these playlists were the ones that made me fall in love w/ goth/post punk:
