There are ancient “sequels” that straight up ignore wukong’s buddhahood and giving him oc kids? Did this author favor taoism too?
I am not too sure about that but I like to think that these are more like the first examples of media that are inspired by Wu Cheng’en's Sun Wukong. Just because there are media out there that has Wukong have children don't mean they are trying to deny Wukong's Buddhist ties or connection that he is the Victorious Flying Buddha, but rather... overlook the idea for the sake of their own narrative purposes. The Supplement can actually fit in “canon” as (spoilers) it is all a dream and Wukongs kids are just a figment of his and the demon's imagination that he accidentally knocked Iron Fan up when he jumped in her stomach. Also, the further that it was a dream was that Red Boy didn’t exist in the dream and Iron Fan only was with Wukong. The author usually explains the tomfoolery by saying “It’s a dream don’t think about it too hard.” Also in Journey to the West After, Sun Luzhen is a stone monkey as well and thus Wukong never went against his vows, simply adopting the stone monkey as his new disciple.
As for Journey to the South, it is more a story about the deity Huaguang dadi as Wukong only makes a guest cameo in the first chapter and the last chapter, the children only being mentioned in the last and even then only Yuebei Xing was the only one with lines and actions. Poor Jidu and Luohou don't even get anything outside of a name-drop. But otherwise, there is also no mention of a wife either. It is left in that territory of... ambiguity where they never really address Wukong having a wife let alone how Wukong got these kids, just that they were his. There is a chance they are adopted but considering he does separate them from his other subjects as he calls his monkey subjects grandchildren, there is a higher chance they are his bio kids. Wukong is addressed by his Great Sage title more often than not but they all acknowledge that he went on the journey is a Buddist disciple under Tang Sanzang as well. So while I do admit it is contradictory I also believe it is one of those cases of "What if"s that is more asking the audience to please give that detail a "suspension of disbelief" treatment rather than trying to make a statement.
I'm not saying that while it would make more sense to keep Wukong as his Buddha title as that is canon in the story, there are a lot of modern media where Wukong does have offspring of some kind for the sake of "what if" cases. Sometimes authors or directors take a lot of leeway with source material for the sake of their own creative ideas and while in most cases I do think that is more for the sake of their narrative purpose than just any religious animosity. I understand that it can be upsetting but Journey to the South does more side-step the idea of Wukong being in a relationship, rather more forced on the idea that Wukong is a father-figure which personally is more of a cute idea that trying to force a romance that is never explored either.

as a native chinese, i feel like some of yall are taking the gods in lego monkie kid a bit too seriously. i understand why it feels iffy to ship / make silly content of deities that people worship irl (eg. nezha, sun wukong) but it’s a phenomenon on chinese social media too. c-netizens ship the fictionalized versions of these gods, which the gods of lego monkie kid are. they aren’t the actual gods people worship; they’re slightly tweaked versions of the book characters, just like any other chinese adaptation or retelling of jttw (and such stories like fsyy) also, no, nezha isn’t a child, in lmk or jttw or sometimes irl. just because he’s often depicted in child form doesn’t make him an immortal child. eros / cupid is often depicted as a winged baby, and he has a wife and kids. it’s basically the same thing here. nothing in lmk suggests that nezha is a child (his voice, his appearance, his personality etc. all imply he is an adult), and while he’s described as youthful in jttw, he’s already 1700+ years old by then and gods can shapeshift. people only think he’s an immortal baby because that’s a popular depiction of him, since one of his prominent myths is set during his childhood. but as long as you’re talking about the god nezha (fictionalized or the religious figure) and not the human child nezha, then that’s an adult [edit: the last sentence couldve been worded better. i would summarize it as “immortal youth nezha is a valid depiction and is popularized by mythology, but adult god nezha exists too and they are NOT mutually exclusive”]
#i’m not even here for shipping discourse ie. “you can’t ship nezha w anyone cuz he’s a child!”#i dont ship him with anyone that’s never been my focus#i just dislike misinformation#if you understand that cupid and eros are adult gods despite often being depicted as babies then why don’t you understand this#and in case i need to clarify i hate pr*sh*pping i dont support it#the fact is that any lmk nezha ship simply isn’t a pr*sh*p because he’s a full grown man#never once in the show does he act or sound like a child so why is this such a widespread belief??#i’d get it if the show was about him as a child going on his killing spree#but lmk is clearly set millennia after that#also abt the “dont ship deities” thing i understand seeing non-cn fans treat chinese gods like fairytale characters is frustrating#but to me since lmk characters aren’t very accurate to their real life religious counterparts they are not the same ppl#like i see swk fanart and think “swk the lmk character” and not “swk the daoist god” yknow#but that’s only my opinion i wont say i’m totally right i won’t argue if you’re daoist or buddhist and find it offensive#lego monkie kid#lmk#jttw#journey to the west#lmk nezha#lmk swk#lmk sun wukong#age discourse#immortal child depictions of nezha do exist that doesn’t mean the god is always a child#and in FICTION. yknow SHOWS and STORIES. not worship. if the story says he’s an adult then that’s what he is#so like. statue of baby nezha = baby#statue of adult nezha = adult. it does not mean every single depiction of nezha is a child#don’t generalize things and do not infantalize him

Have Sophie's timeline on my whole AU! Some headcanons that I made: - After the journey, Sophie gets a title from Buddha when she announces that she will stay with Wukong. Her title doesn't have a direct translation but it's 敬愛 (Jìng ài) which means 'to adore' / 'respect and love' - She becomes one of Wukong's 'advisors' tho she doesn't participate in most of the meetings Wukong always wants to know her opinions on certain situations. She always advises a gentler and more diplomatic approach - Sophie keeps her hair mostly in a half-updo as a symbol of being unmarried especially when there are visitors or she is going outside of Mount Huaguo. It's a cultural thing that she respects to take part in her new life. - After Wukongs propose Sophie starts to grow her hair so she can properly make an updo as a status of married woman when the day comes. - When Sophie gets married she will officially become immortal and a Queen of Mount Huaguo (Flower Fruit Mountain) - Wukong gives her a Peach of Immortality as a wedding gift

Journey to the West Chapter 60
Princess Iron-Fan welcoming home the Demon Bull King like:
Tumblr media
Welcome back to this week's chapter of Journey to the West with @journeythroughjourneytothewest. This week we finally get to meet the infamous Bull Demon King we've been hearing so much about. So let's get into it shall we?
We start this chapter off with the Mountain Deity from last chapter giving us some backstory information. When Monkey asks if the Bull Demon King is the one who set the mountain on fire, the Mountain God is hesitant to correct him, but correct him he does. It turns out that Sun Wukong is actually the one who set the mountain ablaze. Despite the fact that I already have 'arson' listed on his rap sheet, Monkey takes offense to this accusation. However, back during his troubled youth when Monkey was finally captured by heaven and placed in Laozi's brazier, when Monkey made his grand escape he knocked a few of the fiery bricks to earth and well... the rest is history. The fire has been roaring ever since. And the Mountain God who used to be the worker who tended to the brazier, was blamed for the incident and banished to look after this mountain.
All that's well and good, but Monkey still doesn't know what any of this has to do with the Demon Bull king, so the Mountain God explains further. Turns out that the Demon Bull King is the husband of Princess Iron Fan, however the two are currently separated, since the Bull Demon King decided to move in with his mistress. A rich fox demoness, who used the fortune her deceased father left her, to use as a dowry to convince the Bull Demon King to leave his wife and come protect her instead. And despite the fact that the Bull Demon King hasn't seen his wife since, it's up to Sun Wukong to convince him to lend him his wife's fan. And if he succeeds he'll do three good deeds in one- he'll clear the way for them to continue their journey west, spare the locals from having to deal with global warming 700 years to early, and obtain a pardon for the Mountain God so he can return to his place in heaven.
Now armed with the full story, Monkey takes his leave of them and heads for the Bull Demon King's new hideout, leaving Sandy and Pigsy to guard Tripitaka, he also tells the Mountain good to stick around to keep them company for now. Personally though, I just think Wukong has limited expectations for Sandy and Pigsy being able to watch after Tripitaka, they're overdue for a demon trying to eat him after all. So Monkey arrives at the mountain but decides to ask for directions to the exact cave, so he stops the first beautiful young woman he see's to chat with.
The girl of course is terrified to be addressed by this terrifying monk- but Monkey presses on, and tells her he has been sent by Princess Iron Fan to fetch the Bull Demon King and asks if she knows where he can find his cave. This turns out to be a bit of a miscalculation since this beautiful woman just so happens to be the fox Demoness who took a position as the Bull Demon Kings new concubine. And she is not to happy to find out that the wife has been asking about him, and flies into a rage. She insults Princess Iron Fan, calling her shameless for wanting more, when the Bull Demon King already sends her riches every month.
Turns out however that Sun Wukong doesn't think very highly of mistresses, and he also flies into a rage, yelling that she should be the one ashamed of herself for using her riches to steal someone else's husband. This scares the girl into running home so she can get said stolen husband to do what she bought him to do- protect her. This has the added benefit of luring Sun Wukong right to their doorstep, so at least he got his directions in the end after all.
So the girl rushes inside the cave and finds the Bull Demon King, and tells him all about the scary monk, who chased her all the way here that was sent by Princess Iron Fan. The Demon Bull King comforts her, but is still a bit confused by the situation, since he didn't even know his wife even knew any other men, let alone had any in her employ. Regardless he decides to head outside to take a look for himself on who it might be. Only to be politely greeted by Sun Wukong with a bow. The Bull Demon King, returns the polite greeting, but isn't exactly happy to see him, because of the whole Red Son situation.
Monkey once again tries to explain that the Red Son situation isn't as bad as it sounds, and also not his fault. However, even if the Demon Bull King is willing to forgive him for that incident, there is still the fact that he's been chasing his concubine about to deal with. Monkey says that he only got angry with her because she yelled at him first, and asks that he let it go. The Bull Demon King agrees to let it slide, and tells Monkey to leave, however Monkey refuses since there is still one more thing he needs from the Bull Demon King. Monkey tells the Demon King that he needs to borrow the palm-leaf fan so he can extinguish the fire on the mountain and continue his journey west. So it would be just swell if he could convince his wife to lend it to them, and he'll even be sure to bring it right back to them.
The Bull Demon King however has heard enough, and has no intention of lending Sun Wukong the fan, after he has insulted his entire family like this. So the two begin to fight, which Monkey is perfectly fine with, he's always game to spar with a buddy, despite the fact that said buddy is definitely trying to kill him in earnest. So the two fight for a while, with no clear winner, until suddenly the Demon Bull King receives a dinner invite from a messenger. Upon receiving this message, the Bull Demon King tells Wukong they are going to have to take a rain check on this fight, and leaves to attend the banquet. With Monkey of course secretly following from behind.
Monkey follows the Demon Bull King all the way to a a lovely clear water lagoon, and Monkey figures that the demon must have gone in. So Monkey follows suit by turning into a crab, and sinking to the bottom, where he see's the Demon Bull Kings ride- a golden eyed beast tied outside, and a party in full swing, where the Demon Bull King is seated as a guest of honor. Unfortunate before Monkey can continue his streak of party crashing a dragon spots him and calls him out as an interloper.
Monkey plays innocent, and begs for them to spare him, saying he's just a simple crab, who has never been here before and is unfamiliar with proper etiquette. The old dragon is willing to let the incident slide, but Monkey is still kicked out of the party. However Monkey is fine with that, since the Demon Bull King doesn't seem like he's going to be leaving the party any time soon, and even when he does, he probably still won't agree to lend him the fan. So instead Monkey does what he probably should have just tried from the very beginning and turns into the Bull Demon King, to deceive Princess Iron fan. He also steals the Bull Demon King's ride while he's at it, probably to make the farce more believable so that she doesn't try and give him a quiz about when her birthday is like her son did.
So Sun Wukong arrives back at Princess Iron Fan's doorstep disguised as the Bull Demon King, and has two maids announce his presence to Princess Iron Fan. She is very enthused to see him after all this time, and they settle down to talk and have tea together. After a while, Wukong is able to steer the conversation over to her fan, and she tells him the story that he already knows, about how he came by to hassle her for her fan, but that she managed to trick him with a fake. Monkey asks where she's hidden the real one, and she simply says it's in her possession before changing the subject and pouring him some wine. Monkey doesn't drink much, but encourages Princess Iron Fan to drink some, and as she gets more and more drunk, she starts... coming onto Monkey more and more. Which has got to be an awkward situation, but one that he is able to handle with slightly more grace then his master at least.
Eventually Monkey is able to bring the conversation back around to the fan and asks where she has hidden it. Princess Iron Fan responds by spitting out a tiny fan, no bigger then an almond leaf. When Monkey asks how a fan this small can extinguish the flames, Princess Iron Fan shows him the method to return the fan to its normal large size. Now that he has the fan and information he needs, Monkey takes the fan and puts it into his mouth before revealing his true form to Princess Iron Fan, who is of course pissed about the situation, but Monkey doesn't care to hang around to see her full tantrum.
Once Monkey is a safe distance away, he decides to test the fan, and uses the method the Princess told him about to revert it to it's true size. It works, however, Monkey never found out how to make it shrink again, so he just lugs it over his shoulder to carry it the rest of the way.
Meanwhile the Demon Bull King has finally left the party, only to find that he has been car/beast jacked. He calls everyone together to ask who has stolen his beast, but everyone denies having anything to do with it, but the old Dragon mentions that there was a strange crab earlier. The Demon Bull King connects the dots and figures that Sun Wukong must have followed him here and taken on a form of a crab before stealing his ride. Now knowing the situation, he takes off, hoping to chase Wukong down before he can get the fan. When he arrives at his wife's house, he see's his beast outside, and his wife crying up a storm inside. He asks her where Wukong went, but she just yells at him for letting Wukong steal his beast so that he could deceive her. The Monk and the Monkey
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
''What are you?'' The monk asks the animal- no, the creature before him. It stands on its hind legs without any trouble nor struggle. It does not hunch, it does not move. He watches it warily, and his eyes struggle to maintain eye contact, and not to stare at the way he has been carried away from. Where the carcass of the enormous tiger that stands fallen, in a pool of blood and the heavy smell of the metallic blood that he no longer can see or smell.
But to get distracted in the human’s case, would be a mistake if not the being was quite happy yet best not to risk it.
One second, it stares and the next, it stands before him with a bright grin and a tilted head. He startles, dropping his staff as it opens its dangerous jaw to answer his question.
''I am many things,'' It starts speaking, and the Monk thinks it can see the silhouette of a monster behind, watching, in smokes and another thing, another thing that smiles, amused while the human starts to sweat, his palms getting colder and colder.
‘’A wicked demon,’’ It states, grinning with a mouth far too wide, and a grin far too sharp, while the monk gulps with tense shoulders.
‘’A celestial being,’’ It states, as it smiles with gratitude, and a smile full of joy, and the monk relaxes, without being aware, for its genuine smile resembles that of a child a bit too much, tricking him into a false sense of security.
A false sense of security it is,
For a shark may be content, but it still has a mouth full of sharp teeth and a hunger for blood when you cut open your heart and lay it bare.
‘’But moreover, I am human.’’ It says, shrugging and standing back while the monk stares. He continues to stare as it stares up at him, with its tail lazily swaying behind it. He is well aware that he should probably try to find a way to leave, instead of interacting with it, but he blurts out without thinking before his mind can catch up with him.
‘’H-human? Y-you don’t look human!’’ He exclaims, and rightfully so as well, for the being standing before him is a tad bit too hairy, with hands instead of feet and of course, not to mention, the tail it has!
‘’...’’ It stares at him in silence, and it looks up and down while he nervously shuffles.
‘’Your close minded view, as much as it amazes me, is also disappointing.’’ It finally states after an awkward amount of silence and the monk can only drape his bamboo hat over his face, halfway to avoid eye contact since it unnerves him and says nothing to refute its claims more so because he is too meek to argue with a creature who can topple over a demon four times its size.
‘’Tell me what is a god, and what is a demon?’’ It asks, and the monk has no answer which seems to frustrate the creature before him as it invades his personal space once again, forcing him to stare right into its bloody eyes with the moon in them.
The monk stutters as it sighs, snapping its fingers and the human sees magic come to life before his eyes.
‘’A god represents the ‘kind’ side of humanity, while a demon represents the ‘foul’,’’ It says with a crescent smile but a condescending tone, and the monk steps back as his eyes jump back and forth between the mirrored version of the creature.
‘’Here’s a riddle for you,’’ It doesn't look at him as it becomes one, but he thinks it might see inside him anyway.
‘’If I am both, then what am I?’’
The silence scratches on, as tiny crickets pass, and the forest quiets down as if to listen to his answer.
It's a lot of pressure, he thinks when he sees it watching him like a hawk, like the rest of the world that holds its breath.
The human thinks as he lowers his head and thinks. He eventually comes to an answer as opens his mouth as the being before him stares at him nonchalantly, yet with a slightly wagging tail, clearly full of expectations about his answer.
‘’A monkey?’’
The monk, obviously, plays it safe for he feels like this is a trap.
The monkey’s nose scrunches up, and his eyes squint.
‘’Hmph,’’ It- He almost sneers at the human. His eyebrow twitch, irritated, and his tail thumps the ground once, twice and stops still. The monk, for a second, thinks he almost might see a pout.
‘’Typical mortals.’’
He says with distaste and the Monk, Tang Sanzang, can only stare at the tiny murder monkey and think:
What are the chances that if I beg, he’ll leave me alone?’
But the monk can only weep for it will be a long fourteen years.
