Qur'an Journal: Surah Abasa (Verses 1-10)
Surah Overview:
- Name: Surah Abasa (He Frowned)
- Number: 80
- Verses: 42
- Place of Revelation: Mecca
•Ayah 1-10 Reflection
سورة عبس
1. عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّى
1. “He frowned and turned away”
This verse recounts an incident where the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) frowned and turned away from a blind man, Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum.
Tafsir Insight: Ibn Kathir explains that the Prophet was engaged in a conversation with wealthy leaders of Quraysh and inadvertently neglected the blind man's sincere request for guidance. This highlights the Prophet's human nature and his occasional distractions, reminding us that we should be aware of our surroundings and the needs of others.
2. “Because the blind man came to him”
Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum approached the Prophet, seeking knowledge.
Tafsir Insight: This emphasizes the humility of the blind man, who, despite his condition, actively sought out the Prophet for guidance. It serves as a lesson on the importance of pursuing knowledge, regardless of one’s circumstances.
3. “And what can make you know that perhaps he might be purified?”
Allah challenges the Prophet’s perception of the situation, reminding him of the potential of the blind man.
Tafsir Insight: Ibn Kathir notes that this verse illustrates that Allah's knowledge is beyond human understanding. The blind man might be more deserving of guidance than the wealthy leaders, reinforcing that spiritual purity is what matters most.
4. “Or be reminded and the reminder would benefit him”
This highlights the transformative power of reminders and teachings.
Tafsir Insight: Ibn Kathir emphasizes that reminders have the potential to awaken the hearts of those who are receptive. The blind man’s eagerness to learn indicates that he could greatly benefit from the Prophet’s teachings.
5. “But as for he who thinks himself self-sufficient”
This refers to those who are arrogant and rely on their wealth and status.
Tafsir Insight: Ibn Kathir explains that this is a critique of the Quraysh leaders who were dismissive of the message of Islam due to their pride. It serves as a warning against arrogance and the belief that wealth can replace spiritual guidance.
6. “To him you gave attention”
The Prophet directed his focus towards the wealthy instead of the blind man.
Tafsir Insight: This verse highlights the mistake of prioritizing the influential over the sincere seekers of truth. It serves as a reminder to value those who genuinely seek guidance.
7. “But what is upon you if he will not be purified?”
Allah questions the significance of the Prophet’s attention to those who may not accept guidance.
Tafsir Insight: Ibn Kathir suggests that this is a reminder that the responsibility lies with individuals to seek purification and guidance. The Prophet's role is to convey the message, but the acceptance lies with the individual.
8. “And as for he who came to you striving”
This refers to the sincere effort made by Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum.
Tafsir Insight: Ibn Kathir notes that striving for knowledge is a noble pursuit. The blind man represents those who, despite their challenges, actively seek to learn and grow spiritually.
9. “While he fears [Allah]”
This illustrates the humility and sincerity of the blind man.
Tafsir Insight: The acknowledgment of one’s fear of Allah is essential in seeking knowledge. Ibn Kathir highlights that a sincere heart is key to receiving guidance.
10. “From him you are distracted”
The Prophet's attention was drawn away from the blind man.
Tafsir Insight: Ibn Kathir points out that this serves as a reminder for all believers to remain focused on those who truly seek guidance, regardless of their social status.

ideas for casual low-stress art projects if you want to work on something creative during the new year
dream journal: you can either write down every single dream you have so you can look back on everything, or just write down the best ones and add little drawings or collages to embellish them
weather blanket/scarf: create a legend for which colour matches each temperature/weather and then knit one row every day so by the end of the year you have a little reminder of what the weather looked like this year
junk journal/scrapbook: collect misc things like labels/ads/stickers/receipts and make little collages with them in a book
everyone add on ideas

friend wanted to see my tumblr, and when i told him i can’t show it to him bc it’s basically my personal diary he went “oh so I can’t see it but a bunch of strangers on tumblr can??” he literally does not get me. no one will get me like the people in my phone get me
#It’s just so different#even though it’s public it still feels secret and safe. i feel comfy sharing a lot more on here than I do in my actual day to day life lol#in my head I’m also just speaking to myself 90% of the time which helps#if a friend off tumblr saw my thoughts I’d feel so weird ab it#esp bc they might get the vagueposting about certain situations and tell mutual friends#no thank u. this is for me. I’m not about to start censoring my thoughts bc someone I know knows my tumblr#u guys literally saw me have LIVE BREAKDOWNS#meanwhile I’ll have the worst fucking day in history and tell no one about it. I’m already cripplingly private but way more so in real life#this is basically a low stress journaling outlet for me. it’s so important for me to maintain the separation#like this is actually my diary & has been so handy for letting out emotions / articulating thoughts / staying on track !!#& I’ve met so many kind people on here who actually get me. which is so hard to find irl bc I’m surrounded by pre-med gunners/overachievers#who are by standard not very good w emotion & can be competitive/judgmental. or at least it’s hard for me to be vulnerable in front of them#and I’m part of that crowd so I reserve my emotions only to a handful of very close friends#it’s nice to hop on here and express negative emotions!! or positive emotions!! just whatever I want and it’s low stress and people get me#I don’t have to worry about judgment or competitiveness etc etc#like everyone on here is so kind & nice & understanding. & just a breath of fresh air from the types I run w. it’s just nice to have this#so idk that’s why I think I’ll always be strict about keeping the worlds separate. it just works#p

In honour of webcomic day, here's one of my favourite longer comics I've made, called "the worst ice cream in town". As always, you can find many more comics on my patreon, which is linked in my pinned post.

Since it is world book day, I thought I would share once again one of my most heavily annotated, scrapbooked, lived in books- Good Omens.
I usually scrapbook inside my books, but this one is the only one that has things in almost every single page. These are just the pages with double spreads.
To the book that saved me and to Terry Pratchett and @neil-gaiman , thank you 🥂.
I did add some image descriptions. So you get some clues about all the things I put in each spread.
(Because someone asked in the tags: “how can you read it? Reread it??”
Well simple answer: this edition, like many others, happen to have black pages with just the days of the week printed on them, which I left visible, and plenty of empty spaces where I glue/draw everything else, so nothing is covered at all. Plus having so much stuff inside has actually made it easier to open. )

Stop Proving Yourself
Dearest,
Say it to yourself: There is no need to argue your validity. Let’s say it again: You don’t have to prove anything God has called you to. Okay, great! Now that you have a better understanding of where this journal is going, let’s begin.
You do not have to constantly prove your knowledge, understanding, or self to those around you.
You know what you are called to be in the kingdom. The Lord has validated this through prayer, scripture, the gestures of those you influence, and a sense of peace, encouragement, and enjoyment you receive anytime you spend time with Him to study and journal, especially while preparing devotions or teachings.
You have to remember that everyone will not agree with your calling. They will not see you as capable. Everyone is not going to agree or accept you.
Nonetheless, you were not called to please those people. Those people’s opinions will not change your calling, and they will definitely not get you into heaven.
But Your ACTIONS will.
Your obedience.
Your intentional relationship.
Your love for the Lord.
Your ability to Let GO and Let GOD have free rein will get you into heaven.
It’s honestly meaningless to argue about it all when scripture clearly tells you God preordained your future. He knew exactly what and how He would use you once you accepted the call on your life. You can see that in:
“Everything has already been decided. It was known long ago what each person would be. So there’s no use arguing with God. about your destiny.”Ecclesiastes‬ ‭6‬:‭10‬ ‭NLT‬‬
“For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” ‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭29‬:‭11‬ ‭NLT‬‬
Think about it, why argue with older people or “religious conservatives” regarding the matter when it doesn’t make the validity of calling any less? The Lord has predestined your work for His kingdom when you said yes.
Honestly, constantly having to prove yourself and frequently telling others what you do only makes you appear fake, don't you think? At least, that's what the author alluded to in Ecclesiastes: “The more words you speak, the less they mean. So what good are they?”‭‭(Ecclesiastes‬ ‭6‬:‭11‬ ‭NLT‬‬).
So stop explaining how you study or much you study? Stop proving your authenticity. Instead, grow in peace. Continue to seek the Lord. Grow in your calling each day, but do it in silence. You don't need the validation of people, only of the Lord. Only allow them to see the fruit you bear; in due time, they won't argue your value or validity in which God called you.
Yours Truly,
Gavriela
