Hello Bird! I've been following your content pretty much since I entered the Loki/Marvel fandom like 2 years ago. (you're literally the only author I trust when it comes to regular Loki content, I'm forever thankful for what you do).

I'm in the process of publishing a few things myself and I was wondering if you could give baby ao3 authors like me a tip or two on how to keep consistency when arranging a plot for a story.

In line with works like Another Girl Another Planet or Scratch My Back, Jotunn Loki makes a comeback with a tinge of enemies to lovers. However in this case, Jotunn genetics force Loki's body to switch into his Jotunn form sporadically and without warning whenever he's feeling extra hot 👀. Mood swings, Heat irritability, and a lot of bickering (We're about to hit heatwave season here in Spain and it's a most fitting scenario for these upcoming months hehe)

Wow, that is a neat idea! I don't think I've seen that particular take on Jotunn biology. I think you should definitely run with it and see where it goes. I'd be curious to read it when it's done.

As far as advice goes, mostly what I'm doing when I write fics is trying to align myself as close to "sounding" like the person I'm writing as possible. That comes from having watched Loki in the films and my short stint with his show and trying to emulate his beliefs, mannerisms, and speech patterns. It takes time and practice, but that's really how I do it. If I am struggling to get him to sound right, I take a break and bring up a clip where he's talking and then it usually gets me back on track. I do that with Bucky too.

During the story itself, I take it scene by scene and think "okay, here's a scenario, now how would he react to it?" and then I go from there. Naturally, it's fanfiction and so I can play around with what he'd do since we don't really have a full understanding of how he reacts to his romantic companions (I do not accept Sylki at all and I think it was written horribly, so I don't use it as an example) and we as readers are able to suspend our disbelief enough to enjoy some romance and smut. If you feel him doing something inauthentic, it just means that you're trying too hard to move the scenario or the plot forward, and that's fine. You just recalibrate and figure out which part of what you're writing might be slightly off and then adjust.

Shapeshifting Trolls of the Horizon

Trolls as a "species" Exist on the same level as vampires and sorcerers, as a version one may become throughout their life under certain conditions. In other words, some trolls were once elves, dwarves, longlegs*, hobs** or some other species.

How one becomes a troll is a mysterious process. When asked most trolls respond with something vague or inconsistent. Some say that there is an inauguration ritual performed by an older troll, others tell of a self-discovery journey, as if they were always a troll, just born in a wrong family, yet other trolls were born as troll children to troll parents. Many scholars conclude that all of these stories are true to a degree, some trolls are born to trolls others to non-trolls and have to figure out their identity often with help of other, more experienced, trolls.

Trolls have a natural preposition to change. Slowly, sometimes over decades, a troll can change their appearance, voice and mannerisms. Some trolls develop that talent to change faster, transform in moments notice, such magical tradition is called troll-lore. It is believed that masters if troll-lore are so fluid in their appearance that magic preventative spells and amulets can paralyze them, as if turning to stone. Trolls' transformations are fueled by inner vigor of a troll (akin to that of a witch or a sorcerer) and hence is restricted by amount of it's stored power.

Similarly to witchcraft's spells, immediate transformations are achieved by gestures, in this case mimicking the desired form. Trolls' passive transformations are often enhanced with alchemy and operations.

With all the similarities of troll biology to emotion-directed workings of sorcerers (as opposed to witches' rationality), trolls are often frowned upon in a similar way. Some say that troll children are just twisted by trolls they've seen in life, as if kidnapped from their blood-parents.

Trolls rarely live in big cities and when they do they often masquerade as some other species like ogres or young jotunn. Instead, trolls tend to live either in the wild, surviving by the virtue of their adaptive nature or in more accepting, usually smaller, regions like free elven hidden refuges.

It took some time before Jötunn Thor was at last accepted by his six Aesir brothers. He took Thor’s hand and placed it on the large swell of his stomach. His skin turned blue beneath Thor’s palm and he shivered, then pulled back to sigh a frosty white mist into the air.

“Good,” said Thor with grin, displaying his sharp white canines. “Because very soon there is going to be even more Jötunn inside you.” 

Loki hummed his approval and Thor began to purr, the sound like a lion’s growl deep in his chest. They rolled over with a giggle and began to explore each other’s bodies, Thor’s touches revealing the beautiful form hidden beneath Loki’s common illusion. 

It was exquisite. Loki was so soft and full, his flesh warm and his body tender and sweet-smelling, a fertile bud that would soon flower and bear the fruit planted by its six sires. Thor spent a long time just sniffing and touching and tasting, accepting what Loki offered him—kisses, caresses, the creamy richness of his milk—grateful to finally have the love he had craved all his life.

An Analysis of Troll Biology

Hi, I’m insane and have developed an interest in speculative biology. Homestuck is also one of my oldest special interests, so of course I have to combine the two and figure out what, exactly, is happening with trolls biologically.

Of course, I am a human, and extraterrestrial life has not been discovered yet. As such, I will be basing this analysis on Earth’s biology, because that’s all I have. I am aware that evolution would go differently on a radically different planet, and, as such, I will be having a far laxer view of strict categories.

I will be referencing Alternia specifically, although this should all apply to Beforus, too.

The rest will be under the cut, because this post will be long.

Class

Trolls are odd. They generally seem more bug-like, but have mammallian features, some breathe underwater, and some can’t. What’s going on?

Well, it turns out the last oddity actually explains it -- trolls are amphibians. Amphibians have lungs and gills. Landwellers are like most amphibians, having gills as larvae and then losing them in adulthood. Seadwellers are the less common type, that keep gills into adulthood. The fins of seadwellers may be a secondary trait that evolved, and the more mammalian features (such as breasts) may be a coincidental form of sexual dimorphism.

Evolution

Like Earth, I believe life began on Alternia in the water, for basically the same reasons it did here -- easier access to energy sources, easier for elements to bond and therefore create things like DNA/RNA, etc. Adding onto this, the heat of the Alternian sun likely made the depths of the ocean more accessible for life to flourish, as the radiation and heat would more quickly break down things like DNA/RNA.

I believe trolls evolved from a creature that was sort of a Metoposaurus-Cynodont mix, due to having very mammalian (specifically, primate-like) features, but functioning more like amphibians. I also believe that trolls and lusii have a common ancestor, due to the existence of the mother grub sort of functioning like a queen bee. Upon the split between lusii and trolls, despite the many differences they shared, they still developed a highly codependent relationship, with lusii functioning as parents for trolls. The biological connection between lusii and trolls are further supported by this connection existing on Beforus, despite the fact that Beforus did not undergo the rigorous rage-amplification that Alternia did.

For the sake of brevity, I’ll give a name to the genus trolls are apart of -- Jotunn. I believe that early Jotunn species were scattered across the world, however I believe the direct ancestor of trolls, or Jotunn antecessor, were equally aquatic and terrestrial. Jotunn species likely had rhino-like skin, as modern trolls’ skin pigment does not seem to be effected by blood (see: Karkat), and the harsher environment of Alternia would likely necessitate this type of evolution.

Jotunn antecessor likely had gills, but no fins. Their blood color was likely in-between purple (the caste that is the closest to water), and violet (the most common waterborne caste). Like modern trolls, Jotunn antecessor likely had pitch black hair, candy corn-like horns, yellow-orange sclera. Oddly enough, I believe Jotunn antecessor was actually diurnal! Yellow-orange sclera is often indicative of animals hunting during the day, for example, owls. As more trolls spread on land, this may have been kept as a communicative feature, similarly to how humans have white sclera to make body language more distinct. Jotunn antecessor likely had a more marine diet as a result, with the water functioning as a way to hide from the Alternian sun. Jotunn antecessor also probably had some electricity-based powers, as a lot of the caste abilities can be connected to electricity.

Modern trolls likely evolved due to Jotunn antecessors exploring more parts of Alternia. As they did so, they encountered more Jotunn species, and likely interbred with them, creating many aspects of modern trolls. For example, the ancestors of seadwellers likely stayed underwater, and begun mating with Jotunn species that had things like fins. Though seadwellers kept their ability to breathe on land, they gained certain optimizations for living underwater, so most seadweller cultures lived underwater, but did regularly come out to trade.

Landweller ancestors went out of the water, and interbred with land-exclusive Jotunn species. This lead to them no longer having functioning gills -- indeed, landwellers now likely lose their gills as wigglers, like tadpoles and certain species of salamanders. They did, however, develop certain traits that optimized living on land.

Modern trolls are likely nocturnal due to landwellers. Landwellers are more common than seadwellers, and as landwellers became nocturnal, seadwellers had to follow suit, or no longer be able to trade with landwellers. This also gained them a hunting advantage, as most prehistoric Alternian sea creatures were diurnal due to the ocean protecting them from the sun.

Rainbowdrinkers likely evolved due to jadebloods needing to see eachother in the caverns, so glowing was useful.

Blood color differences were likely the result of Jotunn interbreeding + mutations. It’s implied that Karkat’s non-mutant blood color is lime, so it’s possible that candy red blood evolved into limebloods.

Blood Differences

Blood differences imply a different basis of blood color. Bluer/cooler blood tones may be based on copper and use hemocyanian, warmer/redder blood tones may be based on iron and use hemoglobin, yellower blood tones likely have higher concentrations of vanabin, greener blood tones have higher concentrations of biliverdin, and violet-er blood tones have higher concentrations of hemerythrin.

This would also explain the lack of a pure green caste, because higher concentrations of biliverdin can damage DNA, cells, and neurons.

Mind control powers may be caused by influencing the brain’s activity by emitting electromagnetic radiation that then alters their brain to signal their body to do a certain act, like a more advanced form of bio-robots. Levitation may be electromagnetic.

@raimagnolia I'd never thought about the freezing anyone who wasn't also a Jotun. Though that said Loki in the Norse myths goes with Sygin who bore them 2 children, she was Asgardian, and then there's also the stallion that Loki was intimate with as a mare that Loki got pregnant with Slepnir, Odin's eight legged horse.

So I'm not sure if the only part Jotun mixed with whatever their true mother was. Whether a lot of magic is involved to protect lovers etc. Plus if that's a Loki specific trait as technically wouldn't they freeze Thor or anyone else when they touched?

A brief overview of all of identities and aliases held by Martin Blackwood, starship Aurora’s Ambassador and general diplomatic body, for whenever he’s alive next: 

Váli - Hailing from the city of Rindr on the planet Jotunn, this is suspected to be his original name. Not much is known of his childhood and not much is known of his biology, but what is known is that, due to a possible translational error, he appears to be part of both Loki’s insurgency and Odin’s Asgardian Court. It is unclear who’s allegiance he truly had in mind. Last seen entering the cell that formerly held the Mechanisms before all cameras were mysteriously destroyed inside.

(Across decades and centuries and alternate timelines later, a strange message begins to repeat on a radio in Artefact Storage. Sasha writes it down to the best of her ability, thinking that it sounds oddly like old Norse. Even later, when she retrieves it for a statement, Tim promises to take a stab at piecing together what it means- and asks, “Hey, is it me, or does this guy sound a bit like... Martin?” 

The radio continues to speak. Message repeat. This is Váli- run. Get away from Yggdrasil as soon as possible. Take everything you can to the nearest ship and don’t look back. I don’t know when the Inspector will come out with their report, but no matter what they say- even if it’s to repeat what I’m saying- you need to get out. Don’t ask questions: just run. I don’t know how much time we have. Message repeat. This is Váli  )

Melion - Martin is just getting the hang of the abilities his Mechanism grants him when his boyfriend’s girlfriend sticks his consciousness into a gun. Can’t have SHIT on this tube sun space station. 

(Jonny and Natsya conspire to try and shove Martin Back into the gun for five years after Galfridean is flown into the sun. Only Drumbot Brian and the Aurora are his allies as he tries his best to not get shoved into a gun again. It finally ends when the Aurora and Natsya fight, but as Martin and Jonny sit through the loud ecstatic moaning of the- ahem- make up, both of them, in their disturbed truce, wonder if the end of Martin-gun was worth.... this.)

(Martin refuses to tell them what happened to get him into the gun. From here on out, at least one Mechanism is placed on Martin-tailing duty so that they can get some damn songs out of him.)

Martin, a Servant - There’s an entire song about his husband that you’re welcome to listen to (preferably on loop because it’s a Bop) courtesy of the dulcet tones of Gunpowder Tim! Widely held to be the first time Martin fell in love with a mortal he stayed in love with throughout their lives- and throughout Martin’s life, once Hereward bit the space dust, as it were.

Loki talks a bit about the Jötuns in The Little Frost Troll but I'm curious to know more. Will Loki have heats? Are gems and dripping gold a part of the Jötuns' cultural wear?

Oh boy, Frost Troll asks are my favorite asks, and this one actually inspired a piece of character art that unfortunately I haven’t finished yet, but I hope to be posting it soon!

I’m rubbing my hands together and smiling like a villain because I assure you, Anon, nobody is more excited about getting into the detailed aspects of troll romance and mating than I am. (I’ve spent months building an entire world around this and I can’t wait to share it with everyone. I hope it will be as fascinating and enjoyable to you all as it is to me!)

Loki isn’t going to enter a heat in the classic sense (or a rut, being that trolls are intersex), with lots of panting and moaning and a primal, irresistible need to mate, but he is going to enter a subtle phase of sexual receptiveness that even he isn’t fully aware of (at first), and it’s gonna be coming up very soon in the story, like within the next two chapters or so… unless I go off on a rabbit trail and spend some time casually wandering around on a certain subject, which has been known to happen.

As far as cultural wear goes, the frost trolls—and most trolls in general—have relatively rustic, simple attire with only a little jewelry, if any. Think leather and carved wood and pieces of hammered metal. Royalty would of course be an exception, and I have it in my mind that all trolls possess an appreciation for gold and gemstones. Hunigmál, or “honeymetal”, is their word for gold, since honey is prized above any stone or jewel. Bracelets, armbands and anklets are popular pieces, as well as rings worn on the horns and fingers. Bee motifs are a common design in gold jewelry.

Trolls also like to decorate their navels, either painting them using plant dyes—most commoners choose this method—or wearing little jewels in them, such as royalty does. And before you ask: yes, you’re right, I totally yoinked the idea of bellybutton gems from the treasure troll dolls that were popular in the 90s. I thought the image of Loki wearing a jewel in his navel was outrageously cute. XD

But I headcanon that trolls wear navel jewels for more than just looks; to them, it’s a way of honoring their mothers, and a way for expectant troll-mothers to lovingly adorn their bellies and unborn little ones. Much respect is given to mothers in troll society, but because of his hard-nosed, unsympathetic father, Loki was never allowed the opportunity to honor or even mourn his mother after he died giving birth. But now that he’s out from under Fárbauti’s cruel thumb, he’s probably going to get his chance. :)
