El 1 de diciembre de hace unos años nació Joshua, primogénito de Alexander Fletcher y Charlotte O’Connell, una pareja de estudiantes de leyes en la Universidad de Illinois.

Cinco años después, los padres de Joshua decidieron terminar su relación, haciendo que la infancia del pequeño se dividiera entre la casa de su madre, quien había regresado a vivir con sus padres en Galena, y el departamento de su padre en Chicago.

Su vida se convirtió en una rutina, siempre cumpliendo con los horarios que sus padres habían acordado respecto a la custodia del pequeño. Entre semana sus abuelos lo cuidaban mientras su madre trabajaba, y algunos viernes solía llevarlo de paseo al lago, el cual se convirtió en su lugar favorito. Los fines de semana los pasaba con su padre, quien había conseguido un puesto en una importante firma de abogados, por lo que constantemente se permitía consentir a su hijo con animales y carros de juguete.

Crecer al lado de su abuelo tuvo como consecuencia que Joshua compartiera su amor por la pintura. Desde temprana edad el pequeño mostró interés por las obras de la colección del mayor y todas aquellas que veía en los museos que visitaban juntos. Sorprendentemente, en lo único en lo que concordaban sus padres era en no ser admiradores de la idea de que el menor escogiera la carrera de artes en un futuro. Aquello no era lo suficientemente bueno para alguien de la familias Fletcher ni O’connel, y entonces nadie le impulsó a alcanzar su mayor potencial.

A sus quince años decidió aceptar que todo lo malo que pasaba era culpa suya.

Ser hijo de padres separados no es para nada signo de popularidad en Galena. La gente habla mal de ti y de tu familia, porque es un pueblo pequeño y no hay quien no sepa tu historia. O por lo menos la mayoría de ella.

La adolescencia de Josh consistió en almuerzos en la azotea de la escuela simplemente acompañado por una caja de nutter butters y el libro que tenía que leer para clase de Literatura. Al no tener amigos los únicos lugares que visitaba eran la iglesia, el lago y la biblioteca. Las visitas a la casa de sus abuelos se detuvieron cuando tenía ocho años y solo los veía los domingos durante la misa a la que acompañaba a su madre.

Las visitas al lago eran solitarias, por ello iba a la iglesia. Era como una reunión familiar, a pesar que no parecía ser del agrado de todos los miembros.

Otra cosa que se detuvo fueron los viajes a Chicago. Gradualmente comenzó a perder contacto con su padre, excusas como compromisos de trabajo y no comprar los boletos de autobús a tiempo se hicieron cada vez más comunes hasta que el único contacto entre ellos fueron llamadas telefónicas.

Un par de años después conoció a Christopher, un chico de cabello castaño y ojos cálidos con quien mantuvo una relación. Pasar tiempo con él se sentía como lo único bueno que Joshua había hecho en toda su vida, y durante el tiempo que estuvieron juntos siempre se preguntó si se merecía a alguien como él.

Quizá no. Fue la respuesta que aparentemente el destino le dio, pues después de la repentina muerte de su madre cuando tenía dieciocho, Josh se mudó a Chicago y desde entonces no sabe nada del chico.

Tiempo después, apuntó de cumplir veinte, Joshua O’Connell volvió a Galena.

Ya no era el niño que comía nutter butters y secretamente amaba la clase de arte. Era el chico bibliotecario que se escabulle para fumar en el estacionamiento.

► FOR THE GRAVE.

› Concebido para “salvar” la relación.

Todos piensan que el nacimiento de Joshua fue un accidente de jóvenes enamorados que simplemente fallaron con los métodos anticonceptivos. La verdad es que la relación de Alexander y Charlotte no estaba bien, el chico quería darle fin pues lo que sentía por ella en el secundario no era lo mismo años después. Claro que esto no le pareció para nada a su novia y entonces pensó que nada sería mejor que iniciar una familia.

Por eso nunca contrajeron matrimonio y después de cinco años de vivir entre gritos y discusiones, terminaron oficialmente.

› La madre del año.

El que Charlotte planeara embarazarse para atrapar a su novio de la secundaria fue solo un ejemplo de lo obsesiva que podía llegar a ser. Era una persona que le gustaba tener el control de todo, su hijo y la vida de este, por supuesto, no eran la excepción.

En realidad los abuelos de Joshua si apoyaban su gusto por las artes, pero debido a que esto no era del agrado de ella, Charlotte impidió a sus propios padres el relacionarse con su hijo lo mejor que pudo. Y las visitas de Alexander se detuvieron a partir de que la mujer seguía obsesionada con estar a su lado.

Joshua podría haber ignorado los comentarios acerca de cuan disfuncional era su familia, pero su madre no se abstenía de hacer comentarios respecto a la separación: “Él no quería una familia, pero llegaste tu.” “Quizá seguiríamos juntos de no ser por ti.” Y ya que el embarazo fue la razón por la que no terminó la carrera de leyes: “Podría tener un trabajo mejor pero decidí tenerte.” Claramente esto solo provoco que el castaño creciera con una baja autoestima y culpándose por todo lo ocurrido.

› El colapso.

A pesar de que la gente del pueblo murmurara de su progenitora, Josh nunca creyó que ella estuviese mal. Por lo menos no hasta que descubrió la relación de su hijo con Christopher y decidió oponerse a ella.

Fue un accidente, alguien los había visto juntos y como siempre la historia trascendió, llegando hasta los oídos de Charlotte. Tuvieron una fuerte discusión al respecto, los gritos de ambos llenaron el interior de la pequeña casa, e inclusive su madre tiró algunos objetos por los aires. Era la primera vez que Josh expresaba su desacuerdo en voz alta, pero no la primera que su madre actuaba de esa manera.

Joshua se dirigió a la casa de sus abuelos para pasar la noche, su madre le había dicho que no quería personas como él en su vida. El tono en su voz era como miles de puñaladas para el chico, y con un nudo en la garganta le respondió que él tampoco la quería en la suya.

Sin embargo, a la mañana siguiente regresó, y fue entonces cuando todo cambió.

Su madre vestía el uniforme de mesera para su trabajo, con sus ojos cerrados reposaba en el fondo de la bañera. El agua la cubría por completo y solo entonces el chico se percato de la cantidad excesiva de frascos de medicina que había en el lavabo. La mayoría de ellos abiertos, las diferentes clases de pastillas esparcidas en la cerámica, los azulejos y el agua.

A menudo Josh piensa en ellas, disolviéndose. En el agua, remplazando el aire en sus pulmones. Y en que todo lo malo es culpa suya.

Esa misma tarde se enteró de la depresión de su madre… y de todo lo demás por lo que tenía tantas medicinas. Esa misma semana su padre fue a buscarlo después del funeral y con una pequeña maleta viajo a Chicago.

En Galena sus abuelos se encargaron de que la muerte de su hija no fuera un escándalo. Era imposible encubrir el suicidio, pero en el diario local solo se habló de la depresión que sufría Charlotte O’Connell, omitiendo la discusión con su hijo. La partida de este fue excusada con el hecho de que su padre tenía la custodia y su deseo porque el menor estudiase en una academia en Chicago. Esto no era del todo mentira, pero sin embargo, después de un par de meses Alexander se percató que las calificaciones del joven eran pésimas y que su autoestima estaba por los suelos, así que decidió llevar a Joshua con un psicólogo quien diagnostico sufría un fuerte nivel de depresión, agravado debido a la culpa que sentía por la muerte de su madre y además tenía pensamientos suicidas desde su temprana adolescencia.

Su amor por la pintura cambio a ser amor por la literatura debido a todos los libros que se le permitieron leer durante sus dos años en el hospital psiquiátrico en el que su padre lo internó. Cuando finalmente le dieron de alta, regresó a pasar una temporada con sus abuelos, que terminó volviéndose una situación permanente.

Mothership encompasses and encourages many different visual vocabularies and yet, despite 3rd-party Mothership products looking wildly different from each other, they mostly have an often unmistakable SOMETHING that still encodes them as Mothership to my eye. Hull Breach (2023) is a hardcover anthology of scenarios, locations, tools, hacks and rules tweaks by gang of notable 3rd-party Mothership zine makers, and it’s a great example of this sort of…consistent variance.

The book sure looks like Mothership, but the contents, both thematically and visually, are remarkably varied (despite a certain cohesive framing provided by the layout, though even then, I count three separate hands at work). There are rules for playing as human-hunting aliens. There’s a retail chain with a series of back rooms that never end. There is a teleporter in need of testing, heh. I think my favorite is the funnel scenario, “Residue Processing,” which casts players as unwilling participants in a series of dangerous scientific experiments in a corpo lab. Everything is so well done and so different from each other that reading through the book is really like unearthing one delightfully horrible trinket after another; I got pulled along by the promise of ever-new ways to terrify and murder my players.

Lots of great art throughout (LF OSR, Sajan Rai, Joshua Clark and Daniel Vega). I’m particularly keen on Nikolai Fletcher, who contributed the front cover and some interiors. He’s got a very precise style that makes for believable sci fi environments, but then either through composition or color, manages to get this intense brooding feel. I love how dangerous the cover looks without breaking the stillness of the scene (the hole itself is slightly debossed, too, which is a nice, subtle design touch).

I’ll always love the myriad of Mothership products, but Hull Breach sets a high bar for the rest of the 3rd party. I’m keen to see other creators work to meet it.

Thoughts: 

The Eyes and the Impossible was, by far, the standout of the month. Told from the point of view of Johannes, a free dog living in an urban park (a thinly veiled Golden Gate Park in San Fransisco), who keeps the other animals in the park updated on the ongoings in the park. Featuring birds, and woodland creatures, and bison, and goats, and humans who change everything.

Dave Eggers wrote one of my all-time favorite books, A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, and I have avoided reading any of his subsequent works for fear that they would be disappointing. I took a chance on this one since it's middle grade and quite a departure from his other works, and I'm so glad I did.

meet the fletchers ! a colorful family of eight six . growing up lower class , the large family has always had a hard time keeping up with bills amongst other responsibilities . when dean fletcher attempts insurance fraud , he fails to keep the rest of his family out of it . due to a horrible ' freak accident ' , the house burns down including his wife and daughter inside . dean is quickly arrested after failing to hide the evidence of tampering . the family learns to deal with grief , anger , and the harsh realities . some refuse to deal with it and some grow into new people .

daniel fletcher , 29 , he / him , bisexual , resembles josh hutcherson .

daniel , dan , was 23 years old when the incident took place . as the eldest of their immediate family he was given the choice to become legal guardian along with his sister ginny . he accepted as he didn't want them separated . dan quickly fell into addiction and has been continuously laid off from job after job . at age 26 , after a hookup , dan got a girl pregnant and was left to raise their daughter alone . he now works a soul sucking office job 9 to 5 . dan can be described as moody , distant , quiet , tired , giving , gentle , attentive , funny , sweet .

imogen , ginny , was 21 when she became legal guardian to her siblings . due to scholarship , ginny was able to continue her higher education . she is a nurse that works shifts and shifts to be able to provide for her siblings . while dan has attempted to move on , she has continued to give herself more and more to her family without taking a breath for herself . she is overworked and incredibly ambitious with a fear of commitment . ginny can be described as selfless , kind , generous , strict , resentful , caring , overbearing , worried , sad .

bryce was freshly 18 when the incident happened . away from home at a party , he came home in the middle of the night to screams and cries . he stopped zeke from running back inside to save his twin sister . they now hate eachother . bryce went to college for baseball and got a degree in physical education . he now works at at a highschool as the gym teacher as well as coaches the baseball team . bryce can be described as cocky , protective , loud , a ' fuck boy ' , flirty , angry , regretful .

zeke was 16 when the incident happened . zeke lost his twin sister in the fire and went off the hills in order to cope . dropping out of highschool , he got his GED later but still doesn't use it . he works as a male stripper at the local club and tends to get himself in horrible situations . he dabbled in drug dealing even to his older brother . zeke can be described as impulsive , angry , fun , flirty , sexual , sly , cunning , enthusiastic , depressed , funny , loyal .
